Dad’s gone inside to fetch my brothers from the train. It’s sometime in the mid-70s. I am sitting in my dad’s red TR6, double parked by the back entrance of Grand Central Station. Simon and Garfunkel are playing on the car stereo while insistent rain streaks the windows and colours the city grey and silver. It’s quiet despite the mid-morning hour. I watch the rain and listen, pretending to read my book. For these eternal moments, I feel wrapped in the arms of my childhood.

This memory often washes over me like a sun shadow when the rain falls in a certain way or haphazardly, the way recollections come and go. And now, as I spray on Marissa Zappas Perfume Smoked Jasmine Black Tea, it comes back to me. I hear a lyric from “The Dangling Conversation”:

And you read your Emily Dickinson
And I my Robert Frost
And we note our place with book markers
That measure what we’ve lost
-Paul Simon

In creating Smoked Jasmine Black Tea, part of the brand’s Garden Collection, perfumer Marissa Zappas was inspired “by the scent of black tea spilled over an old book … (it) harkens back to Emily Dickinson, her dried flowers and poetry.” For me, though, this is the fragrance those years, of falling city rain, wet jasmine flowers spilling from the Upper Westside bodegas, tendrils of steam from a cup of hot tea sitting on the low coffee table as I read about opera singers in one of my father’s music history books.

It was around this time that I discovered jasmine tea. I was fascinated by the idea of drinking flowers and loved the way the dried blossoms would unfurl in the cup, adding their creamy exoticism to the unremarkable Lipton tea we always had around. My first impression of Marissa Zappas Perfume Smoked Jasmine Black Tea reminds me of that: indolic jasmine girded by Ceylon tea: floral, sensual, tannic, smoky-edged. Bergamot and bitter orange appear right at the top, quieter than usual in a tea fragrance, but distinct. Soon after, the jasmine and bitter citrus are joined by the complementary aroma of dried sage, together adding a linger of the kitchen. The perfume’s beauty, both comforting and poignant, start to wrap around me gently like a muslin blanket.

As Smoked Jasmine Black Tea unfolds, I begin to smell different facets of the dominant notes. The jasmine has a duality I have not encountered before: the pearlescent, animal smell of the fresh flower dominates, but gradually there is also the delicate needlepoint aroma of the dried bud. This unusual juxtaposition is just lovely.

In the heart, black tea adds a neatly tannic counterbalance to all that indolic creaminess and acts as a partner with the bergamot and sage to keep equilibrium. Ceylon tea often has an astringent, orangey aroma, and this is what the tea note comes across as in Smoked Jasmine Black Tea. Incense is a canny choice to elicit an indefinable smokiness with falling into the heavier lapsang souchong or Russian tea territory. There’s an olfactory likeness in the bite of the citrus and tea notes that combined apes the sensation of tannins over the back of the tongue. I can almost taste Smoked Jasmine Black tea in these moments.

I am not sure what is in Smoked Jasmine Black Tea that telegraphs as rain to me, though I think it is orris.  It is present from the early stages growing more pervasive until the dry-down, when it fades in favour of when a damp cedar note. This is the scent of inside on rainy days; the grassy smell of swollen old paperbacks combined with wood, crayons and dried herbs. As I inhale Smoked Jasmine Black Tea over and over, I remember reading Emily Bronte in the old school library at recess; the dust-and-vanilla smell of the old green volumes of Dickens my mom gave me one birthday, drinking jasmine tea as I watched rain fall from the front window. Smoked Jasmine Black Tea smells, somehow, of all of this.

A perfumer can give us no greater gift than to strike a responsive chord that moves us, comforts or provokes us. Smoked Jasmine Black Tea may just give Masque Milano’s Lost Alice a run for my favourite tea scent of all time.

And how the room is softly faded
And I only kiss your shadow, I cannot feel your hand
You’re a stranger now unto me

Lost in the dangling conversation
And the superficial sighs
In the borders of our lives-
Paul Simon, The Dangling Conversation

Notes: Bergamot, orange bitter, clary sage, jasmine, black tea, orris, cedarwood, incense.

  • What a lovely review Lauryn. I love how Smoked Jasmine Black Tea brought back such poignant memories for you. I’m a fan of Jasmine tea and would love to experience this fragrance. Thanks for the opportunity. Mich USA

  • Lauryn says Smoked Jasmine BLack Tea may be her favorite tea scent, even better than Lost Alice, a quite high praise. Marissa envisioned black tea spilled over an old book when creating Smoked Jasmine Black Tea. While the notes don’t indicate that, I have a feeling there may be a little vanilla note or something similar in the composition because old paper does give that vanillic vibe. I am in US.

  • I loved Lauryn‘s scent memory. What a great picture she painted – it felt like I was there. Smoked Jasmine Black Tea is a dream come true. I adore tea fragrances and Jasmine conjures my own scent memories. I would love to have a bottle of this perfume! ~ Indiana

  • Incense, tea, and jasmine! Oh my. Sounds perfectly perfect to me. Some of my favorites blended into an sublime concoction. Yes, please. In maryland.

While I have not tied anything from this brand they have my attention. I love how the fragrance was inspired by literature and moments tired to books and reading. This really transported me to sitting in the sun reading outdoors or scent of a study. Beautiful!

  • What struck me about the fragrance is the inspiration behind it – specifically that it is inspired by the scent of tea spilled over an old book. As an avid tea drinker and collector of old book, I can almost picture exactly what this would smell like and it just sounds amazing!

I have never tried any of the brand’s fragrances but a bottle of this is definitely going on my wishlist.

  • As a child of the 70s, my memories feature a Simon and Garfunkel soundtrack, as well, along with the incense my father would burn, and later, the jasmine tea I discovered in junior high….Lauryn’s lovely review struck a lot of sentimental chords for me. I have not tried any of Marissa Zappos’ fragrances yet, but have a sample of Ching Shih on the way to me, so very excited to see this review and draw. I live in the US.

  • I was struck by the reviewer associating this perfume with a childhood memory reading a book. US

  • I often get nervous about jasmine but this sounds very intriguing. Tea notes are starting to become favorites of mine. I don’t know what it is; they have a raw feeling that manages to not envelope everything it surrounds, unlike my experiences with some other notes I would describe as earthy. Orris is another that I have been getting more interested in, but am still in the toe-dipping phase with. I am from USA.

  • What an incredible review! I have found myself reaching for fragrances with tea notes and jasmine a lot lately, and this sounds like a rich, interesting combination of the two. I also have a love for jasmine tea – it reminds me of college, huddling up over a hot, fragrant mug in a drafty old apartment with my roommate while we studied. It felt like such a sophisticated indulgence then, and honestly still does now. WI USA

  • Lauryn’s review of Marissa Zappas Perfume Smoked Jasmine Black Tea creates such a lovely atmosphere of sounds and smells of rain, smells of dusty old books, memories from the past, all coming together in a nostalgic dance of sorts – the experience of such nostalgia will be different for everyone, but the fact that a perfume such as Marissa Zappas Perfume Smoked Jasmine Black Tea can create this feeling is amazing. I haven’t tried this brand, yet, but Lauryn’s review makes me want to try it, especially Marissa Zappas Perfume Smoked Jasmine Black Tea. Thanks for the review and draw. I am in the USA.

  • I’ve tried samples of most of Marissa Zappas’ extraordinary scents, including Smoked Jasmine Black Tea (it, Violette Hay, Flaming Creature, and Ching Shih are my favorites, although SJBT is the one I would most like a bottle of). Lauryn’s description captures precisely what is moving about this scent, how damp, cozy, and mysterious it is. I’m in New York, USA.

  • I have been dreaming of trying this one ever since I heard about it! Jasmine tea is my favorite to drink and the jasmine flower is one of my favorite notes in perfumery. Lauryn’s review mentions that both facets of jasmine are present in this perfume, which makes it sound exceptionally dreamy. I love Flaming Creature and would be thrilled to try this creation too. I’m in the US (Minnesota).

  • GennyLeigh says:

Great review Lauryn! I also appreciate a good tea fragrance and Smoked Jasmine Black Tea seems very evocative of sipping a hot Lapsang Souchamg while reading a good book with a bouquet nearby. The clary sage, cedarwood and incense remind me of a stately library. This sounds like a lovely scent to wear on a slightly chilly rainy day. I’ve not tried any of Marissa’a fragrances before. MD, USA.

  • goldenswan says:

The imagery of smoke tea, an old book, on a rainy day with touches of incense are very comforting with this fragrance. I haven’t tried this brand’s other offerings.

  • Beautiful review of what sounds like a stunning fragrance. I appreciate how the fragrance evoked personal memories for the reviewer, distinct from and yet complimentary of the scent inspiration. For me, this composition had me at “Emily Dickinson” and “old books”. I’m in the US.

  • I love this perfume for some of the same reasons articulated in the review. Although I’ve never smelled anything like it, it somehow recalls moments in my past, or maybe fantasies of a past I wish I had. It also summons a specific, if invented, place for me: A library with a cold fireplace, leather chairs, and big open windows leading into a garden. It’s late spring, a bit cool for the season, and a little bit rainy. The light is tinted green.

  • Great review, there is nothing quite like the smell of books to bring back memories. I have not tried any fragrances from this house. NV, USA.

  • ajraccounts says:

What strikes me about Marissa Zappas’ Smoked Jasmine Black Tea based on Lauryn’s review is how it evokes such a specific memory of hers! I also love jasmine tea — I traveled to China many moons ago and it was the only tea variety of which I bought 2 different types while there. So I’m intrigued by a scent which evokes this tea in fragrance form. I haven’t had the chance to try any Ms. Zappas’ fragrances. I’m in CA, US.

  • This article was so dreamy! I loved the quote ” This is the scent of inside on rainy days; the grassy smell of swollen old paperbacks combined with wood, crayons and dried herbs.” As I read this article, it is currently raining here in northern PA and I am feeling nostalgic and I found the review to be very comforting. The notes are lovely, as I enjoy tea scents. This one especially sounds beautiful with cedarwood and incense in the base.
I had never heard of this fragrance line before so I’d be thrilled to add this perfume to my growing collection.
    I live in the USA.

  • Terrific review Lauren! Cool that this fragrance connected so strongly to your childhood memories. Now I’m humming “Kodachrome” and will need to listen to some Paul Simon later.

Anyway, I love a good tea fragrance, and a smoked jasmine tea sounds particularly lovely. The strong, calming floral scent is what makes jasmine tea so good. I noticed clary sage in the notes list here; clary sage makes an appearance in some of my favorite wet shaving scents, including a particularly realistic Earl Grey tea expression, so I’m interested it’s used here as well. The additional of incense is also clever—smoky, but restrained. I’d love to try this, and I think my wife would really enjoy it as well.

I haven’t tried any Marissa Zappas Pefume fragrances. I’m in the midwest, USA.

  • Thank you for the evocative review! I’ve always thought of jasmine as going with green tea, so I am very curious about the pairing with smoky black tea instead. This sounds like a perfect rainy day fragrance, the kind that could make me *feel* like I’m tucked away at home reading over a steaming cup of tea, even if I have to go out and about in the world. Would love to give it a try! WI USA

  • Smoked Jasmine Black tea by Marissa Zappas was inspired by the scent of black tea spilled over an old book. This fragrance unfolds into different facets of the dominant notes. This sounds like a very nostalgic fragrance for Lauryn, as she refers to many ways this fragrance reminds her of her childhood. According to Lauryn, this maybe the best tea scent of all time. I have not tried any of Marissa Zappas fragrances yet.
    Maryland, US.

  • Bryant Worley says:

What strikes me about this fragrance is summer up in Lauryn’s statement: “This unusual juxtaposition is just lovely.” And that’s what this fragrance is – a juxtaposition, contrasting notes that, somehow, fit together. I also like the mental picture that Lauryn conjured throughout her review, because they build a desire for the fragrance.

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA, and have never tried a Marissa Zappas fragrance.

  • Jasmine, incense and black tea, what a combination! I love the background and how Marizza inspired to make this amazing fragrance. I am a book lover myself and would love to try this art piece; i know I would adore it.

  • Lauryn!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Wow! I’ve been rereading your Amazing review!! ❤️❤️ I Love everything about it! Jasmine, tea, incense… sign me up! Interesting backdrop of Cedarwood, clary sage, & bitter orange to give that terpenic lift (I wonder if that is where you get rain? I sometimes get an ozonic geosmin from terpenes ‍♀️). I would love to be a lucky winner! I need to experience Marissa Zappas Perfume!! ❤️ USA

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’ve only heard of this company: I haven’t tried anything from them yet. This fragrance seems interesting to me because I like a lot of its notes, but also because I’m interested in seeing what the jasmine is like in combination with the tea, the incense, and the orange bitter. I’m also interested in seeing what the clary sage, cedar, and orris in this are like. I get the impression that I don’t have anything like this in my fragrance collection. I live in the U.S.A.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the fantastic review Lauryn!

I really liked this review because of how it highlights how different facets of notes evolve over time to reveal nuances of the fragrance. You have the orris which harkens to an image of rain, the juxtaposition between the indolic floral jasmine and the tannic tea which reveals citrus elements and the play between the tea and the incense to create a synergy of smokiness and another layer between the orris and the cedarwood to create the damp outdoors effect.

I would really love to smell this one. I have not tried this brands fragrance before

    Cheers from WI, USA

What beautiful prose in Lauryn’s review. I loved reading her recollection of New York City, the Simon and Garfunkel song, and discovering jasmine tea. Oh, how I love jasmine and Emily Dickinson. I love the idea of tea and old books.
I haven’t tried anything from Marissa Zappas.
    I live in the USA.

  • Tea spilled over an old book, interesting! I love jasmine tea too, though I’m used to the chinese style jasmine teas. But this sounds really different, almost like a smoked earl grey with jasmine. I am a big reader and love that old book smell so this sounds right up my alley.
I live in the USA. I’ve not tried anything from this house before. Thanks for the giveaway!
