Marc-Antoine Barrois Ganymede Review (Quentin Bisch) + Timeless Masculinity Draw

"From Tros,  three noble sons were born, Ilus, Assaracus and the god-equal Ganymede, the fairest one of mortal men; for such was his beauty that he was carried off by the gods to dwell among immortals, thenceforth pouring into the cup of Zeus" (Homer’s Iliad, rhapsody Y, lines 233-235, translated from Ancient Greek by Despina Veneti)

In Greek mythology Ganymede was a young Trojan prince of extraordinary beauty who caught the eye of Zeus: transformed into an eagle, the impulsive “Father of gods and men” abducted the boy, bringing him to Mount Olympus. There Ganymede was given eternal youth and immortality, as well as the privilege to become cupbearer to the gods, pouring their nectar. One version has Zeus placing Ganymede in the sky, as the constellation of Aquarius (the "cup-carrier"). Throughout the centuries the mythological figure of Ganymede has been a source of inspiration for artists, writers, philosophers and poets, including Homer, Plato, Pindar, Euripides, Goethe, Apollonius of Rhodes, Virgil, Cicero, Leochares, Michelangelo, Tiziano, Rubens, Rembrandt, and Thorvaldsen.

Planet Jupiter and Marc-Antoine Barrois Ganymede (Digital collage: Despina Veneti)©

As a tribute to the ancient Greek myth, the biggest moon of planet Jupiter was named Ganymede; the ninth largest object of our solar system, Ganymede is a world of mineral rock and an internal frozen ocean, a thin oxygen atmosphere and a magnetic field. Continuing to inspire to this day, Ganymede is the name of the new scent by Marc-Antoine Barrois, of the eponymous Parisian Couture House for men. Just like his first fragrance, B683 (whose name refers to an imaginary planet inspired by asteroid B612 of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry‘s “Le Petit Prince”), Ganymede is also created by Givaudan perfumer Quentin Bisch.

The friendship between the couturier and the perfumer began five years ago, when Quentin was just moving onto the second year of his career at Givaudan. Hesitant at first to expand in the world of perfume, Marc-Antoine became increasingly drawn to the idea of dressing the skin in a way other than clothes. The success (mostly by word of mouth) of B683 surprised even its creators and, having thoroughly enjoyed their creative collaboration, the two men were eager to work together again for a fragrance that would be, as Marc-Antoine told me: “the younger brother of B683, sharing the same DNA but with a personality of its own; again expressing my fashion universe of timeless elegance with contemporary touches, but this time reflecting a more luminous, more fluid masculinity". The olfactory core of B683 – spices, leather and woods – is indeed present in Ganymede, but this aromatic journey takes a different direction.

A luminous opening of succulent Italian mandarin, spiced up with sunny saffron and electrifying cumin, immediately brings back to me memories of hot Mediterranean summers. The spiciness is given a substantially interesting edge by the use of immortelle (the “everlasting flower"), one of the most chameleon-like ingredients in perfumery; here it is truly a key element, one that elevates this composition from a highly enjoyable fragrance, to an artistic one. Immortelle, a real botanical treasure, is an evergreen shrub that has been thriving for centuries in rocky, sandy, sun-baked zones of Southern Europe, producing clusters of cheerful yellow flowers.

Immortelle growing wild in Greece  zagentata.bg

In Marc-Antoine Barrois Ganymede I smell mainly the dried flower, straw and curry-like nuances of the plant. The perfumer used the immortelle as a basis of what he calls a “mineral accord": completed by woods, moss and spices, this accord is meant to reflect the rocky and salty geological properties of Jupiter's satellite. At the same time I find that immortelle echoes the very myth of Ganymede, both because the young boy was made immortal, but also due to the importance of the plant in Ancient Greece: its cosmetic and therapeutic properties were cherished, and – considered a symbol of eternal love and good luck – immortelle flower wreaths were offered to the gods. The raw mineral character is contrasted with soft suede leather (a combination of violet and osmanthus); the latter's refinement and smoothness provides an excellent counterpoint to the juiciness and spiciness, giving the overall composition an air of contemporary sophistication. Ganymede’s performance is impressive, and its sillage not only powerful but also ever-shifting. A thoughtful creation of highest quality and diffusion that reconciles conceptualization with pure aesthetic pleasure, Marc-Antoine Barrois Ganymede uses timeless natural and cultural treasures as a starting point for his imaginary olfactory voyage – to Jupiter's moon, and beyond.

Notes: Italian Mandarin, Saffron; Violet, Chinese Osmanthus Absolute; Akigalawood, Immortelle Absolute.

Disclaimer: I'd like to thank Marc-Antoine Barrois for my bottle of Ganymede. The opinions are my own.

Ganymede seems like a fusion of eastern and western perfumery styles. The review shows Greek mythologies continues to inspire art to this day. Have heard a lot about first from the brand called B683. I am in US.

  • What a beautiful article, Despina. When I heard that there was to be a new fragrance named Ganymede my mind only went to the Greek myth, I didn't think about the name in astronomical context. It's interesting to imagine the immortelle being used as a mineral accord. I'm anxious to try this one, I have smelled and enjoyed B683. I live in the US.

  • This is a new brand for me. I'm excited to put my nose to this one and B683. I loved the little prince as a child. I love the paragraph about immortelle used. Anubis has immortelle and I love that fragrance. It's not a material used very often. I live in the US.

  • Dear me, this sounds quite unlike anything I have experienced thus far.. neither have I come across this house of perfumery, I’d love to get a reach of this.

    I live in Germany!

My favorite part of the review, all of it!! Although I am Aquarius, so I loved that part.

I am very well aware of Mr. Bisch and some of his creations, and he is proving himself a force in the industry.

I shall enter the draw, but not before thanking all for the opportunity.

    I am in the USA.

    Hi there

Great stellar review by desphina, the scent is interesting and very masculine I can imagine, also sparkling just the way I like it.

Great inspiration  transfer from ancient noble warrior like, perhaps it will be in the stars for me.

What a great review! I love the mix of mythological background, the connecting of the scent to that background, and, of course, evocative scent description. I love how Despina talks about how the scent captures the "dried flower, straw, and curry-like aspects of the plant." I love seeing immortelle in real life (coastal California is where I've seen it), and rubbing the little buds between my fingers, and I find that the syrupy take on immortelle common to Serge, Sables, and others shortchanges the dry freshness of the actual flower. This sounds wonderful! I've not smelled anything from this line, and certainly would love to start. Thanks for the draw: I'm in the US.

  • bigscoundrel says:

I loved the background information of the Greek myth, and it really gets me into the head of the creator. The note breakdown sounds great, and now I want to smell like a hot Mediterranean summer year round. I haven’t tried B683, yet. I’m in the USA.

  • Elizabeth T. says:

Ooh, osmanthus in a masculine perfume! This sounds amazing! I love the inspiration, coming from both mythology and from space… and how the name is linked to the first release, B683. This was an especially beautiful, informative article! I always learn something here. Thank you! I'm in the USA.

  • I loved the refresher on Greek mythology. I love myths and folktales. This sounds completely unisex. I have not tried this or the house. I'm in USA.

  • A long lasting fresh suede fragrance?! Say no more. My favorite thing about the review is hearing that Quentin Bisch is the perfumer. Everything he touches turns to gold. USA

  • The history of Ganymede was very interesting, but I particularly enjoyed Despina's description of the fragrance.  Orientals are definitely my thing, and I have to agree that the addition of immortelle to create a mineral accord is a unique touch.  Never knew you could get a suede from combining violet and osmanthus!  And although I haven't smelled B683, I am a fan of the concept.  Such a stunning bottle too.  USA

  • “The raw mineral character is contrasted with soft suede leather” this apeals me the most in this very imaginairy written review…love to read it.  I know the B683, I love this fragance, I have the 100 ml bottle. My husband wear this perfume and every time I smelled this perfume I think it’s so well balanced and sophisticated. I’m really curieus about the Ganymede…..

I live in the Netherlands EU

  • I love the immortelle flower and that flower with moss, spice and woods definitely sounds like a perfect combination.

    I am in EU. Thanks!

  • Thank you Despina for another wonderful review and the chance to try out for Ganymede. This review has me thinking of Gustav Holt's – Jupiter, the bringer of Jollity (one of my all time favorite music pieces). I'm pretty sure Ganymede would bring some of that joy 🙂 I'm in TX USA

  • That was an interesting glance into the idea of that mineral accord. I don't know B683 yet – so in a mainstream world this new one would be a flanker, right? Both sound interesting to me! – I'd love to win this to Germany, thanks for the draw!

  • As soon as Greek mythology was mentioned I was hooked, and loved the associations made in this review! Never tried B683 so far! Living in Germany, EU

  • Loredana O says:

This association between the perfume and  the Greek gods is very interesting and it makes you to want to try the frangrance and to feel like in heaven…

    Never tried B683 so far.

  • fleurdetilleul says:

I love mythology and such introductions given for a fragrance, like the one here, are a delight! I haven't tried this perfume. I live in EU.

  • I am extremely interested in how immortelle was used in the composition of this perfume. I know both this ingredient and the mineral accord can be quite vague, so I it would be really interesting to smell how they translated in a fragrance, and later on skin. I am unfortunately not familiar with B683. Thank you for the giveaway, I’m from EU.

  • Lovely review, Despina thank you. I loved your mentioning of "A luminous opening of succulent Italian mandarin, spiced up with sunny saffron and electrifying cumin, immediately brings back to me memories of hot Mediterranean summer" who doesn't have memories of hot Mediterranean summer nights anyway and the name of the perfume related to the Greek myth,

I am also very curious to experience how immortelle used in this perfume reacts to the overall result.

Unfortunately I have no knowledge of B683.

I live in EU.  Thank you for the opportunity to experience such a lovely perfume.

  • Thank you Despina for the review! I'm intrigued by the description "little brother of B683". I'd love to discover it. I still haven't got the chance to try B683 yet. Got to try it now!

Thanks for the giveaway! I live in France.

  • marcopietro says:

Nice review! The portrait of this fragrance is really attractive, it returns the image of a fragrance that mixes in perfect balance ancient echoes of archaic rituals and a refined contemporary elegance.
Never tried the previous one B683, but I will fill the gap soon. I really love the notes of mandarin and immortelle, like the fragrances that evoke Mediterranean atmospheres, so this one seems really made for me.
    I am in EU. Thanks!

  • The fascinating review of Despina Veneti enhances the allure and the mystery that surrounds the scents of Spring evoked by this new fragrance. I am intrigued by scents of wood, and they make me uncontrollably wild. I hope to have a chnace to see Ganymede in person, and get immersed in his smell.

  • ElenaChiss says:

I have not tried anything from him, but this one sounds magic with the combination of immortelle, mandarin and osmanthus. A solar perfume with stunning bottle. I am from Europe. Thanks!

  • Andreea Florica says:

What a review and what a beautiful bottle! Lovely combination of notes as well. I am sure that the perfume itself matches the bottle which contains it. Never tried anything from B683.

I am amongst the EU readers. Many thanks!

  • Thank you for the background, history and mythology info. Nice notes and I love immortelle. I have not smelled B683, this is the first I heard of it. US

  • Wonderfully enthusiastic review! I am just returned from a trip to Sicily, where I also spent some time hiking in natural reserves, and I would just love to remember my trip by smelling the mandarin and immortelle in this perfume. I also love osmanthus, which can be really dark, but here seems to be used to import a softer, creamier note. It all sounds so lovely. The review makes me regret that I have not smelled anything from this house or this perfumer before. I live in the EU.

  • I enjoyed reading about some of the Greek mythology. And this …

Marc-Antoine Barrois Ganymede uses timeless natural and cultural treasures as a starting point for his imaginary olfactory voyage – to Jupiter's moon, and beyond… The combination of the notes sound fantastic.

I have never smelled B683 and would love to. I live in USA.

  • I knew Marc Antoine Barrois for making high quality ties and bracelets , and mid last year Sebastian did a review for B 683.

Interesting backstory , notes i like , Quentin Bisch i'm a fan of – Ganymede should be a winner.I'm wearing Mystery Tobacco  right now – one of Quentin Bisch creations.

Just a small note here.  Immortelle (it has like 10 different names) has been popular for centuries , but not only in Southern Europe , but also all over Europe. Immortelle does not grow only on "sunbaked zones" .

  • I enjoyed reading about the idea behind this fragrance. I haven't tried B683, however, I am a fan of Quentin Bisch. Thanks for the opportunity to try Ganymede. USA

  • mandarin, cumin, saffron and immortelle? this sounds strange and wonderful – i've never quite figured out what immortelle smells like (though it appears in a lot of perfumes i like!) so i appreciated the description here – i live in the us and would love to smell this!

  • I heard about B683 but never had the chance to try it. Now with this new one calling it B683 younger brother and adding mandarin, saffron and cumin to the olfactory pallette makes it worth of trying it!

I live in the US and would like to win Ganymede

  • Vwry interesting review.

Perfume begans like Mediterranean summer, than imortel and other dry notes- sounds beautiful!

    Unfortunately, I've not tested B683.

  • Greek mythology inspired fragrance? Ok you got my attention . When I was a kid "Greek Myths & Legends" was my favorite book… and still is one of my top five.

Woody,  spicy with suede leather ? Interesting.

Good performance is always appreciated.  Tired of whimpy and at the same time expensive fragrances.

Appreciate the review,  and the giveaway campaign.

  • Very beautiful review, Despina!

i liked the featuring immortelle as "cameleon" ingredients. In this perfume its bring dry fruits and mineral aspect.

    This perfume sounds really interesting.

  • I was drawn into Despina's review by her use of mythology.  It was fascinating to read about Ganymede.  Another keepsake story for me.  🙂  I also am unfamiliar with B683 but I love discovering new things so I appreciate hearing about all the new, unique creations!  I love Chinese Osmanthus so, of course I must seek this out.  Love to win this one!  Thanks! In the USA

  • I have not smelld B683, but after this review, I'll need to see if I can find it! I enjoy the description of Ganymede, especially imortelle, which sent me down a rabbit hole investigating the plant itself. I'd seen it listed as an ingredient in many scents, but wasn't something I looked for specifically. I'll pay more attention now! I'm in the U.S. Thanks for the review and the draw!

  • saadfragrance says:

God this sounds so interesting , have never smelt this as its the first time ive heard about this brand but it sounds so so interesting, rocky, earthy the imortelle plant the way its nuanced in this scent. Would absolutely love to win this wow , would have it delivered to london Uk

Living in Southern California, I’ve always loved Greek mythology, depicying how human the gods were, subject to wants and whims and yet, possessing incredible potential. I think I’m inspired in that we can ascend to greater endeavors and purpose if we can awaken and recognize our own potential. I appreciate how Despina incorporates that which is accessible from the fragrance and associates it back to the mythology, like the use of immortelle, the “everlasting flower” mirrors the immortal Ganymede. Makes you wonder which came first. At least we can have a glimpse into what a god may smell like.

I have not smelled B683 yet, but I’ll be sure to now.

  • IvanVelikov says:

I have to say the history of Ganymede is really nice – this myth is pretty famous , or maybe I’m just a nerd Lol.

Hiring famous nose like Quentin Bisch is a bold move , but it will do Marc Antoine Barros good.

To be honest I have to idea what “mineral” fragrance is , but woody and spicy with suede leather combinations sounds pretty good.

Ganymede’s performance is impressive, and its sillage not only powerful but also ever-shifting.

Good performance is always a plus. Thanks miss Veneti

  • Citrucy and spicy start , and then start. Juicy , spicy , leathery concoction in the base – really good combination for the colder spring and autumn days. Potent fragrances i appreciate a lot.

I enjoyed reading about Ganymede, the perfume and also the Greek myth. I always learn so much from the reviews on this website. And, of course, I am inspired to search out new fragrances like this one and B683. I am searching for a masculine fragrance and the citrus, saffron, and, especially, the immortelle sound like a holy grail.

    I live in the USA.

  • The fact I enjoy about Despina's review is that she mixes mithology with astronomy. She makes me think that this perfume has modern notes but If I would wear it, it will make my memories come back.

Thanks to Despina for the story from which I learned a lot and thank you for this draw. EU

  • The notes listed for this sound familiar to something else I've tried before, but I can not recall which fragrance. Spicy woods, with suede leather are always a safe masculine bet, but floral notes added should make this an intriguing mix. I have never sampled anything from this house. Thank you for the chance at winning a bottle! – US.

  • Quentin Bisch created my beloved Delina Exclusif . I also own Angel Muse and A*Men Ultra Zest both I like a lot , so I expect Ganymede to be high quality scent . I feel like there is something like a trend for shapeshifting fragrances lately. From zesty mandarin to immortelle , to leather , woody and spicy base. Interesting composition + Good longevity and sillage = music to my ears. Bottle I like a lot. Thanks Despina for the fine job you did. USA most of the year, and Germany from time to time

  • This is a well written and informative review. A delight to read. I have not tried B683, but would love to sample both offerings from this house. Cheers from the USA!

  • Woody , mossy and spicy fragrance inspired from Greek myth , and also made by Quentin Bisch hmmm. I have to say my expectations are high. The leather is nice addition, and the top performance we all like.

    Bottle looks pretty good too.

Thank you for the opportunity , and to Despina for introducing this brand to us.

Thank you for such a wonderful history of the name! I love the idea of a scent with immortelle and violet leaves. I also appreciate how the brand is taking its time with new releases and not dumping a bunch of half hearted attempts on the market. I will definitely look for this one when next in NYC. I am in the US.

  • I bought a bottle of B683 after reading the review and as it lauryn? I remember thinking Quentin Bisch is a Star now he’s a moon of Jupiter .immortelle is what I i am interested in as well

  • This sounds so interesting especially the immortelle

Quentin Bisch I read about first here when he told his story about school

  • Many thanks for the draw. I love everything about Despina's review, she writes with gracious elegance and passion. However, there is a tremendous problem here. While I'm typing this comment I'm simultaneously googling this perfume as I need to try it out straight away. Oh dear.

What a lovely review Despina !
I always love a good story behind a perfume and the story of Ganymede is very interesting. Being inspired by mythology and astronomy, Ganymede seems like a perfume with great character. The use of immortelle to achieve the mineral accord, specific for an arid environment from Jupiter's moon is intriguing. The use of "  Ganymede's timeless natural and cultural treasures as a starting point for his imaginary olfactory voyage " sounds like the perfect summary.
I haven't smelled B683 yet, but I hope to very soon.
Thank you for a wonderful review and for the generous draw !

Thank you for a review written with passion Despina !
I'm passionate about astronomy and it's great to hear that the inspiration for Ganymede is Jupiter's moon.
This seems like a wonderful take on the mineral note, especially with the use of immortelle, which sometimes has a slightly spicy and bitter odor profile.
I love Quentin Bisch's work and I'm looking forward to smell Ganymede. I haven't tried B683, as well, but hope to do that.
    Thank you for this draw.
