Manos Gerakinis Anthem review

The isles of Greece! the isles of Greece

Where burning Sappho loved and sung,

Where grew the arts of war and peace,

Where Delos rose, and Phoebus sprung!

Eternal summer gilds them yet,

But all, except their sun, is set”-George Gordon Lord Byron 1819

Lord Byron, one of the most iconic poets and one of the most famous philhellenes of all times, declared, “If I am a poet, … the air of Greece has made me one.”

The air of Greece is brought to us by the house’s founder, Manos Gerakinis, with his olfactive stories that fuel the imagination, feed the soul, and caress the senses. The first luxury niche Greek house floats effortlessly between the East and the West, between simplicity and opulent extravagance, using the most intricate craftsmanship to deliver a fresh contemporary result in their approach to the timeless art of perfumery.

Manos Gerakinis Anthem guides us back in time, on a new olfactory journey, to the Greek revolution of 1821: “Anthem’s inspiration comes from the Greek revolution in 1821. The fragrance with notes of labdanum, saffron, amber and oud recounts the story of Greece and its journey towards freedom and independence. Two hundred years later, the core values of the revolution still apply to the modern ‘revolutionary’ man. Anthem brings the past into the future and unites the East with the West in its own distinctive way.  When I was thinking of the revolution, I was also thinking of the modern man and asked myself: how free are we today? My mind wandered between social media, the internet, and the ideal lifestyle as it is displayed on media. That is how I made the connection with the past and the present as well as the “modern revolutionary” man. Chris Maurice is the ideal person as I find we can relate on a deeper level and he gets my thinking very naturally.. We are working on a new fragrance for a 2022 release and you can’t imagine the ease and natural flow of energy and understanding between us.”

When reading the last line from the brand presentation, I loved the ending: “The only real luxury is time, make yours memorable,” and Manos was kind enough to tell me more about it when I asked him to elaborate further on the idea: “I personally regard fragrances as the potions that can lighten one’s spirit. My intention is to uplift others and to awaken secret emotions: Anthem is a life force that brings the strength and courage to become a better person”

Anthem

Detail from the limited edition packaging of Manos Gerakinis Anthem, designed by Greek painter G. Stathopoulos

Just like the bird pictured above, the fragrance soars in the air from the first seconds, just like a  scented symbol of freedom. Vertical, bright, uplifting, it feels as yellow as drops of lemon sparkling in the sunlight, with saffron wings, the one spice more precious than gold, adding its tactile leathery and spicy facets to the airy liftoff. The vibrant sunny amber slowly rotates away from the sun, darkening the bright edges, giving contrast and depth to the image that forms in the following frames. This part of the fragrance brought back memories from my university years – of a mixture of silent solemnity and sheer sensorial delight that I still continuously chase for when traveling – but seldom find. The sudden goosebumps on my sun-bitten skin, coming out from the scorching summer heat outside to the cool dry air of an ancient library. The wallpaper of noise of the underground still ringing in my ears shattered against a wall of silence that almost felt material, with small muffled echoes of almost imperceptible sounds adding even more depth to its presence. Eyes gradually adapted to the dim lights colored by the stained glass while the feeling of being suspended out of time was both deliciously exhilarating and strangely comforting.

The memory of those seconds of calibrating my body, mind, and soul to a knot where I felt the presence of history resurfaced when diving further into the dry-down of Anthem. The deep ambers alternate between their initial freshness and newly added weight given by the bouquet of flowers that blooms in its heart- with rose and ylang tempered by the bite of cinnamon and spices. There’s an underlayer of honeyed roundness that satisfyingly interplays with the angular edges of the bright citric notes and the spiky facets of the spices, making the experience ever so satisfying in its sensorial contrasts.

Further sliding on the sinuous curves of associations mixed with memories, I see dusty pages of books turning into dry crimson petals of a rose, the smell of incense sticks wafting on stone corridors that led to my room in the attic of that old house, my silver bracelet covered arms drawing aside the heavy velvet curtains, and opening the windows, to let in the evening air together with the call of the muezzin.

In the drydown we enter the portal that opens the soul of the fragrance – a dense, sleek, and sensual experience that dances on your skin, relentlessly. All the usual suspects we love to love are here: a smooth leather mixed in with deep vanilla, earthy patchouli, and the most smooth vision of oud.

Manos’s task is not a simple one. Still, we are given a fully immersive experience that speaks to the mind, heart, and soul with equal strength, and Anthem does what the name promises: strikes a universal chord that resonates with the most intimate parts of one’s soul.

PS – I have worn this perfume while having on repeat one of my favorite albums of the last year: Brendan Perry’s Songs of Disenchantment – Music from the Greek Underground – and until you get the chance to sniff Anthem, please listen to the cover of the traditional Greek song “Bring me a cup of wine” for an extra “impossible-to put-into-words” layer.

  • What struck me most about the description of this perfume is the use of labdanum as a top note. As a lover of the material, I can only imagine it combined with saffron and amber. Together with the sunny aspects of lemon this perfume sounds like pure delight! Thank you! I am in the US.

  • joetelegram says:

I love how the ingredients, “labdanum, saffron, amber and oud” tell the story of Greek independence. The language used, such as “drops of lemon sparkling in the sunlight” is also extraordinarily powerful in the telling. Perfumery is truly the sweet fragrance of liberation.

Today I am going to connect my fragrance to vocation and literature. I will try to do similar as a daily habit. Thank you, Nikoleta, for the reminder of this exceedingly rare value in fragrance, and thank you to Manos Gerakinis and CaFleureBon for the opportunity and generosity.

  • The amazing details and very interesting information with the photos sparks my interest. I live in Poland, EU.

  • I love how scents bring forth such strong memories. Just today I asked my youngest what scent he would most associate with me and would he remember it into his adult life? It was very telling. In maryland.

  • The vibrant sunny amber slowly rotates away from the sun, darkening the bright edges, giving contrast and depth to the image that forms in the following frames…So full of memories…. Love from EU

  • AndradaIl says:

I just love Labdanum. That earthy, grassy feel that it gives to a fragrance. And combined with amber, i just know this will be a bomb for elegant wear. I hope i will win this. I live in the EU.

  • OMG, I love Greek History and how our culture comes from them. I grew up reading Homer, and many other tragic writers. This perfume is undeniably amazing for the notes, I loved reading specially this part of the review by Nicoleta: “a smooth leather mixed in with deep vanilla, earthy patchouli, and the most smooth vision of oud”. If that isn’t amazing, I don’t know what it is.
Would love to try this fragrance myself.

Anthem sounds heavenly and I love all the notes specially leather, vanilla and oud… I would love to try it!!!! Massachusetts, US.

  • On top of the amazing notes, I really love the ideas of freedom and independence portrayed in this fragrance. I never thought to connect the Greek revolution to modern revolutions. Really hope I get to try this through the giveaway drawings. I am in CA, USA.

  • I still get chills when reminiscing about my initial impressions when I visited Greece for the first time. It was the summer of 1999, I attended European student summer school in Chania on Crete island. I still vividly remember walking on the airstairs in the airport in Heraklion and being stuck with the special kind of warmth, the kind I had not felt ever before. The air was so hot, that the landscape was melting in my eyes, but it was at the same time so easy to breathe and this hot dry air fulfilled me with non-recognizable energy. I was mesmerized by the landscape, sea, scents, people, and everything. I immediately fell deeply in love with Greece.

Nicoleta’s depiction of Anthem is captivating, especially her description of the fragrance’s itinerary. Based on the review, Anthem seems such a complex resonating fragrance. I admire Manos Gerakinis’ undertaking and the concept of the fragrance.

Thanks for a great presentation and a generous draw.

  • The inspiration of this fragrance from the Greek revolution of 1821 is very interesting, the revolution always leads to a rebirth. This review is a true poem.

  • The only real luxury is time, make yours memorable,” and Manos was kind enough to tell me more about it when I asked him to elaborate further on the idea: “I personally regard fragrances as the potions that can lighten one’s spirit. My intention is to uplift others and to awaken secret emotions: Anthem is a life force that brings the strength and courage to become a better person” A beautiful and eloquent description by Manos Gerakinis. I am just loving all the notes I wonder how this beauty will work on my skin. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • Your story of early summer and college struck me- it is exam-time for many students right now, and I bet many are living that transition from hot sun into cold libraries. I would love to smell this. Thank you for the review, writing from the EU.

  • What sparked my interest was this line, “All the usual suspects we love to love are here: a smooth leather mixed in with deep vanilla, earthy patchouli, and the most smooth vision of oud”. US

  • How lovely. Speaking of Lord Byron losing his life in Greece, if you are interested in this, you should read Mary Shelley’s novel, “The Last Man” It is partially about this great loss … and partially about a civilization ending pandemic. I am in the US.

  • RiccardoC says:

I love how Nicoleta was able to describe this Manos Gerakinis fragrance, between history, images and olfactive notes. This lemon opening mixed with labdanum and amber seems extremely interesting.
    Would love to try it

Thank you for enlightening me to the Greek War for Independence. I was not familiar with the history but the quest for freedom and liberty are universal and eternal. The use of labdanum, saffron and spice on a sunny, ambery leather does sound like it would soar. Lovely review Nicoleta! MD, USA.

  • Thank you for the beautiful review, Nicoleta. The passage about stepping out of blazing sun into the cool, dim confines of an ancient library was evocative and captured the magic fragrances have when you really connect with them. I’d love to try this one and see if I can conjure up a setting of my own.

    I’m in the Midwest, USA.

  • sephrenia300 says:

Really lovely review Nicoletta! What sparks my interest based on Nicoleta’s review is learning that Anthem’s inspiration comes from the Greek revolution of 1821 and the spirit of freedom and independence. In a time of much turmoil, we desperately need revolution. A fragrance that connects the modern “revolutionary” to freedom and the core values of the revolution sounds like just what we need. I live in the US.

  • Bryant Worley says:

Nicole’s really ‘put her foot’ into this review, what with, not only helping us to understand the ‘waftiness’ (yes its a word, because I just made it up)/sillage of the fragrance, followed by how the notes flowed together to make up the bouquet.

I really look forward to getting my nose on this scent.

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • Southirina says:

Nicoleta, thank you for the opportunity to read this review. It was a huge pleasure!
I am extremely interested to smell a perfume who’s creator think that “The only real luxury is time, make yours memorable”.
    Hugs from Romania

  • wandering_nose says:

Thank you Nicoleta! What a wonderful, poetic review. A fragrance which is satisfying through the sensory contrasts and complexity is one that appeals to me the most. It allures me, draws me in and would not let go, as I become obsessed and wouldn’t want to be without it. Creating a fragrance that brings the strength and courage to become a better person is an amazing, admirable, noble idea. Using labdanum as a top note is not a common practice so I am additionally intrigued. I would love to make Anthem a song that sings itself on my skin. Thank you from Dublin, Ireland, EU

  • I like fragrances with an idea, it gives me a state of mind 🙂 Anthem is one of them with a big idea, the revolution. How beautiful the Oud is when mixed with Oakmoss and Patchouli, oh I adore this emotional combination. I hope to feel these atmospheres of Anthem as the first fragrance from Manos Gerakinis. Greetings from Sarajevo, BiH

  • This is very intriguing to me : It’s hard to pin-point the fragrance olfactive pillars, and to force it into one category would just do it terrible injustice. I live in Georgia USA. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • Michael Prince says:

What interested me about Nicoletta’s review of Manos Gerakinis Anthem is first the poems and quotes about freedom, liberty, and the idea behind creating this fragrance the Greek Revolution of 1821. It sounds like Manos Gerakinis has come up with a brilliant new creation that I look forward to trying. I am from the USA.

  • Starlit12 says:

Anthem sounds as complex, sinuous and multi faceted as Greek culture itself. Traveling the realms of spices, flowers and resins, it truly seems to be a profound scent for a profound person, full of poetry and philosophy in its core. The solemnity of this perfume, in Nicoleta’s words, is what triggered my interest the most.
    I live in the EU.

  • Nice review Nicoleta! You and other contribuitors of CaFleureBon has introduced us many fragrance’s houses from around the world and great new perfumers as Manos Gerakini who gives us with Anthem a full experience that, as you say, speaks to mind, heart, and soul with equal strength in a complex resonating fragrance. From the top vertical and bright notes with lemon and saffron that ambers dark later and give contrast and depth until the heart of the scent with vanilla, patchouli and oud ( “the usual suspects ” we love). As Manos says , and Mr. Maurice translate into a perfume, Anthem is a “connection with the past and the present as well as the “modern revolutionary” man. I live in Spain, EU

  • I loved Nicoleta’s review of Manos Gerakinis Anthem, and also Manos Gerakinis’s quotes on the Greek history and it’s connection with modern man’s and woman’s quest for freedom in a (fake) idealized world of social media and advertising. Nicoleta’s talking about her own such search in travels, but seldom finding it, points to the existentialist crisis of our times. If, as Manos intends in his creation of Manos Gerakinis Anthem, and as Nicoleta discovers in it, such a freedom can be found in this perfume, it’s certainly worth checking out. Thanks Nicoleta for a heart felt review and for thoughts of the perfumer Manos and a chance for participating in this draw. From USA.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I am very interested this try this fragrance. I can like all of the notes for this one. When Nicoleta mentions the deep ambers, the bouquet of flowers, the cinnamon and spices, the deep vanilla, the earthy patchouli, etc. I become truly interested in trying it. I live in the U.S.A.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thank you for the beautiful review Nicoleta.

It’s very neat how this fragrance was inspired by the Greek revolution and a bunch of notes that are often used as base notes are used in the top.

Reading through the sentiment – “I personally regard fragrances as the potions that can lighten one’s spirit. My intention is to uplift others and to awaken secret emotions: Anthem is a life force that brings the strength and courage to become a better person” made me think about how much I use fragrants as part of my awakening.

    Warm regards from WI, USA

  • Nicoleta, thank you for this review. Anthem sounds to be like a fragrance I would love to experience especially with the way you have described the fragrance as well as the combination of notes. I hope I get to try Anthem very soon.

  • Nicoleta, this is such an evocative review and beautifully written. I am so curious where you went to University. It must have been magical.
