Laboratorio Olfattivo Limone Review (Jean-Claude Ellena) 2021+ Viaggio in Italia Draw

  Laboratorio Olfattivo Limone review

Laboratorio Olfattivo Limone via Laboratorio Olfattivo apped  by Michelyn

Sweet the memory is to me
Of a land beyond the sea,
Where the waves and mountains meet;
Where amid her mulberry-trees
Sits Amalfi in the heat,
Bathing ever her white feet
In the tideless, summer seas.
~ Amalfi by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, 1875

Here I sit in the midst of a Massachusetts heat wave – when fellow native poet and professor (Portland, Maine was actually considered a ‘district of Massachusetts’ at that time) Henry Wadsworth Longfellow comes traipsing across my memory palace. It’s 1875; at this writing, he is 68 years of age and recalling his youthful trips along the Amalfi Coast with immense tenderness. Pray tell: how could he not? Between the brilliant Mediterranean blue of sea and sky, unrelenting sunshine and extraordinary abundance of lemon cultivation, one envisions it clearly and can even smell it. All of this streams forth, triggered by a single spray of Laboratorio Olfattivo Limone Maître Parfumeur Jean-Claude Ellena, created as part of his Italian trilogy for Laboratorio Olfattivo and the newest in the Master’s Collection.

Maître Ellena possesses an uncanny ability to capture terrain and evoke a specific locus. His Les Parfums de Grasse Collection created for Perris Monte Carlo illustrated that in no uncertain terms. Recently he has turned his gifted nose and hand towards Italy: Laboratorio Olfattivo Limone, Bergamotto and Mandarino. I’ve had the joy of experiencing two out of three (Mandarino, you’re next), and assure you that these are truly a delicious summer adjuvant. They will prove a magic wand in winter, as they transport you somewhere warmer and more welcoming, hospitable.

Confession time: lemon and I are embroiled in an ongoing love affair. I don’t wish to be crude, but there is precious little that I won’t eat – providing you put lemon on it. I feel similarly about lemon in perfumery, knowing full well that due to its low molecular weight, natural lemon notes are highly volatile and quick to disappear. Along comes Laboratorio Olfattivo Limone. Its radiant citrus fruit appears tonic and somewhat floral at first; eventually it evolves into a Muscular Lemon. Limone’s first flush resembles a first love: it illuminates everything it touches – expansive, generous, unaffectedly lovely. There is a jolt of ginger in it which seems perfectly natural (yes, I’m particularly partial to a lemon-ginger pairing in most anything as well) and companionable. The orange leaf note which is present possesses a bitter greenness, a touch of sweetness and even a marine facet.

What surprises me is what follows white musks – those which we’ve come to associate with a baby-soft character, a pillowy-ness. Somewhere along the line, I smell a potent cedarwoody/slightly scratchy musky wood note which anchors the fragrance. At this point Limone assumes a more linear character; I feel that it also assumes a more yang-like attitude – which is where my impression of a ‘muscular lemon’ arose. There is nothing fluffy about Laboratorio Olfattivo Limone’s drydown – and it gives rise to the distinct image of a swarthy-skinned, dashing dark-maned male replete with hairy chest. You might not envisage this way, and if so – there it is. Any comparably forceful person with a strong personality will suffice.

My point is that Laboratorio Olfattivo Limone is no giggling, lemony vanillic musk; it’s a cologne to be reckoned with, a fragrance rooted in gravitas. I think that this aspect makes it far more intriguing and sophisticated. Maître Ellena refers to this quality as aristocratic, and I’d be hard-pressed to disagree (were it not that I am a bit contrarian and tend to bristle at concepts such as aristocracy, privilege, and the notion of being deserving). Let us say that  Limone is endowed with a degree of nobility of spirit – and one cannot be born into that nobility which is open to all. It’s a revivifying elixir – elegant and suitable for everyone. Notes: Italian lemon, ginger orange leaf, white musk

  • It is great that Laboratorio Olfattivo is giving Ellena great freedom to explore different facets of the citrusy fruits. Given how the earlier citrusy compositions have been great, I feel confident that Laboratorio Olfattivo Limone is equally impressive. I am in US.

  • joshuabrian says:

Great review! The fragrance sounds perfect for our Midwestern summers. I have not tried others, but hopefully I get to try this one! From Indiana, USA

  • Toni Casamassina says:

As always, Ida, you bring everything to life with your expressive writing. I too have a longtime love affair with lemon, but have rarely found a lemon in perfume that works for me. I desperately hope this is the one, based on your description of it’s “gravitas.” Although I haven’t tried any LO fragrances to date, I am a big fan of Master Ellena’s work in general. I’m in the USA.

  • Ah, a good summer lemon! I do enjoy the opposite side of the coin (the fluffy light musky summer lemon such as Guerlain Shalimar Souffle), but this one sounds like a fun boisterous lemon to enjoy. Muscular lemon indeed! Thank you Ida for such a fun and evocative review. I have not tried anything from Laboratorio Olfattivo before. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • I’ve been searching for an Italian-style, fresh, lemony cologne which might be better than most other ones, and according to this review, this fragrance seems like it is of that nature. I enjoy citrus notes in perfumery, and I think that it is interesting that certain perfumers have found ways to increase the longevity and/or strength of citrus notes. I think that this cologne would be better than “4711” in every way. I enjoy a good use of lemon with ginger. I haven’t tried anything yet from this fragrance house but I’ve been planning to at least sample “Vanagloria” and now I truly want to try this one too. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • Julesinrose says:

What interests me is anything Ida likes! Lol (but it’s true). Besides that, I am a big fan of Jean Claude Elena’s fragrances. While not generally a fan of light or citrus frags, I always enjoy his light and masterful touch. This one sounds like the perfect antidote to this untimely heat and humidity! I’m in Maine, USA and have not tried any of this house’s scents. More to try, oh my!

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

I’ve been intrigued by this house since I’ve heard about Mandarino. I haven’t tried anything from the house, but lemon is always a refreshing choice in the summertime. Reading that Jean-Claude Ellena was involved really makes this even better. I enjoyed reading how the lemon, ginger, and orange leaf complement each other in this fragrance. I live in Maryland, USA.

  • chrisskins says:

Bring on this dusky, hairy stranger! I’m intrigued that it is not lemon for kids, teens or anyone that purposely giggles with the intention to charm. You won’t find it freshening the toilet, either. This sounds like The Lemon King and I’d love to smell it. I haven’t tried any from the house yet. I live in the USA.

  • Lemon! I love them too. I also truly appreciate lemon and ginger. Seems like a simple yet extremely well put together scent. In maryland.

  • Andrei Artimon says:

Oau this sounds like a total winner!!! Specially right now for the summer , and from one of my favorites perfumeurs . I am from new york , usa .

  • Lemons are always welcomed during the hot summer months. I liked the mention of a ginger note in Limone. Thanks for the draw. I haven’t tried anything from this brand, as of yet. Mich USA

  • I’ve been interested in this house since I heard about it which I believe may have been here in the Mandarino review. Vanagloria is another that got my attention and I’ve looked at their site and seen quite a few that sound wonderful. I like how Ida called this a muscular lemon and would love to try it along with a number from Laboratorio Olfattivo a house from which I’ve yet to try anything. Thanks for the generous draw, from CT USA.

  • Jean Claude Ellena PLUS muscular lemon. Yes please

I did buy mandarino and Tonkade
    Very under rated house
    I live in EU

  • Sherin Thomas says:

It is great that Laboratorio Olfattivo is giving Ellena great freedom to explore different facets of the citrusy fruits. Given how the earlier citrusy compositions have been great, I feel confident that Laboratorio Olfattivo Limone is equally impressive. I am from PA, USA

  • Jean Claude-Ellena was the first Maître Parfumeur i discovered in my niche journey, and yes, indeed is something aristocratic about his work! From EU with love!

  • Great Review Ida! it is a declaration of love to Lemon/Limone. It is not difficult to agree with you on that subject: in scents, in kitchen, … wherever lemon is a gem! Thank god Mr. Ellena ,when retired as in-house perfumer at Hermes, didn´t stop making amazing perfumes. I enjoy citrus notes in perfumery, but here is not just a top accord but a lemon soliloquy from solar radiant and flowery at first to a “Muscular” Lemon. Ida says more intriguing and sophisticated than many citrus scents! Definitely we have to try it in this very early hot days in Spain. I have and love Laboratorio Olfattivo Kashnoir, with another citrus, in this case, orange (blossom) by the one and only Cecile Zarokian. I live in Spain, EU.

  • Laurentiu says:

A nice, simple, elegant and timeless cologne always sounds like a good idea on the hot summer’s days. Thank you!

  • I don’t like citrus based fragrances, or to rephrase it better – I don’t like them, except for the ones that monsieur Ellena made. I love his knack for beautiful ethereal transparency, and making the citrus enveloping around the wearer and not sharp or astringent. I haven’t had a pleasure of sniffing any of the Laboratio Olfattivo fragrances, but I think this would be an amazing start in discovery of the house. I live in Croatia, EU.

  • NituNicolae says:

I love lemon and especially ginger fragrances. This scent feels like it is perfect for the beach. I find Patchouliful from Laboratorio Olfattivo to be very nice. I live in Romania

  • Christos GX says:

What it appeals to me is the fact that it is going to be a quality fragrance with amazing citruses, with a unique character.I want to smell the pillowy-ness character of the musk(that seems very appealing and interesting).I live in Greece and i have not tried any Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrances.

  • Everything signed by Jean-Claude Ellena has my attention. He has his way in creating these transparent, light, uplifting mood kind of fragrances. I like many of his creations and it is only normal to want to test this one as well.
I am reading you from EU. Thanks!

  • Unfortunately due to covid restrictions, I can not travel to Italy, but I have been there twice in the past and I was considering going there this summer as well, but it looks like my plans will be postponed. I am sure that through Laboratorio Olfattivo Limone I can have an olfactive journey to Italy and its’ beautiful beaches and the sky-like waters.
    Thank you very much!!

  • Jean-Claude Ellena is brilliant and I’m convinced that Limone is no exception when it comes to creating beautiful fragrances. I’m currently in Romania.

  • Jean-Claude Ellena is one of my favorite parfumeurs, and I love citrus fragrances. A lemon-ginger blend with a bitter greenness from orange leaves, which is aristocratic and not fluffy, suitable for the hairy chested man sounds divine for the upcoming hot summer days.
I haven’t tried anything from Laboratorio Olfattivo, and I hope that Limone will be my first. Thank you for this draw, greetings from Athens-Greece.

  • Anything Jean Claude Ellena is a must try! I love Ida’s phrase “muscular lemon.” That pretty much lets me know what to expect. I haven’t tried any Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrances. This is my first introduction to the brand. Thanks for the review and the giveaway. In the USA.

  • Any perfume which is a result of Jean Claude Ellena is, in my and many people’s opinion, a masterpiece.
This particular cologne also sounds like it won’t fail my expectations: sparkling, yet dignified lemon, a touch of ginger (a combination made in heaven!) and the bitterness of orange leaf. Aristocratic and muscular or not, Limone really triggered my interest.
It was also lovely to read that it also has two siblings, Mandarino and Bergamotto. I am happy to read about citrus getting some attention- I believe it is quite underrated lately, getting lost between more opulent, darker fragrances with a different purpose.
    Writing from EU.
    Thanks!

  • patrick_348 says:

Lemon-base fragrances have the potential to be boring and overly familiar, but Ida suggests that this one has character and subtlety. I like the idea of a “muscular” and “aristocratic” lemon. I have not tried any Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrances, so I don’t have a favorite. I am in the US, in North Carolina.

  • This fragrance sounds like a shot of sunshine! Just wonderful. I love how intriguing and sophisticated Ida describes the fragrance. Thank you for the opportunity! USA

  • Big fan of Ellena’s work for Hermes and PMC. Great to hear that he uses orange leaf in this one to give Limone a bitter greenness. But a marine facet? I’ve got to sample this! Interesting that Ida uses that “muscular” description owing to the scratchy and woody musks. I’ve found that Ellena often likes to use cardamom or cumin in his masculine citrus compositions, sometimes giving it a rough-and-tumble vineer, so this is in intriguing departure to create a similar effect. Never easy to get a citrus fragrance to last, so this could be one to look into for the summer. Only sampled Nerotic from the brand and it’s a smoky and spicy goodie. Usa.

  • My nose would follow Jean-Claude Ellena to the ends of the earth. I am trying to replicate the Amalfi Coast by growing my own lemon tree here in the PNW. Citrus, sunshine, marine and a drydown “swarthy-skinned, dashing dark-maned male replete with hairy chest.” irresistible and I cannot wait to sample. USA located.

  • VerbenaLuvvr says:

I am always on the hunt for the perfect lemon fragrance, something shockingly, unabashedly citrus–not that boring, watered-down lemonade for the masses we see everywhere. Lemon is my very favorite note and that Ms. Ida recommends Limone seals the deal for me, I must try it as well as Bergamotto and Vanagloria. US

  • Virginia Riley says:

Ooohhhhh, I adore lemon and ginger pairings, and just about all of Jean Claude Ellena’s creations. I have not had the pleasure of trying the fruits of this perfume house yet, so this would be a true gift! I live in another Mediterranean climate – Southern California in the USA.

  • Still looking for the perfect lemon perfume. This might definitely be a great contender, what a lovely description as if it takes shape right in front of you. it feels like I can smell the lemon already! Thanks for the great review and the opportunity. Living in the EU

  • kramerongo says:

I agree with Ida s review , I use lemon on everything I use. It will remind you about the land and seas so it will you take there with this fragrance. I am all in for that. I am in Sweden EU

  • jmmcmenamin says:

The review made me want to try a lemon scent! Never tried any of their fragrances, in Louisiana, USA.

  • GennyLeigh says:

I agree with Ida, lemon is a tricky note for me. LO Limone sounds interesting with the musk and ginger. I like the idea of a muscular lemon fragrance, particularly for hot, humid weather. I’ve not tried any LO fragrances yet. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • What a beautiful review, Ida !! I am intrigued- young lemon, baby-softly mask, cedarwood!! Sounds beautiful. And I love Ellena creations.
    USA

  • Ida’s reviews are always so evocative of brilliant imagery, this time of faraway Mediterranean land, calm seas, and the fragrance of lemons surrounding you. From her review, I like that Laboratorio Olfattivo Limone is not a tame, quick to disappear citrusy scent, but a potent, lasting one. I haven’t had the good fortune of trying Laboratorio Olfattivo perfumes, yet, but hopefully soon some day. Longsworth poem at the start of this review perfectly set the tone for the rest of the lovely review. Thanks for the generous draw and review. I’m in the USA.

  • NickKnack says:

Excellent depiction by Ida! What really interests me about her review is that this is more of a “take me seriously” scent that doesn’t stay in the same area that most fresh citruses are confined. I have not tried any of the fragrances from this house but would love to give my thoughts as I have had many of Jean-Claude Ellena’s perfumes and they are fantastic!
    NY USA

  • Bubeto_GG says:

Laboratorio Olfattivo i know because of Alkemi . Nice balsamic gourmand with smoky touches, and decent dose of red wine in the base.
Limone is appealing to me because of its bitter greenness , right amount of sweetness , and playful marine accord.
    Thanks a lot
    USA

  • wilsonwc76 says:

Oh, this sounds fantastic! Laboratorio Olfattivo Mandarino is one of my favorite scents, so I know I have to try Limone and Bergamotte. This scent sounds so deep and sophisticated for a citrus scent. I know I’m going to love it! I’m in New York City.

  • I like that Limone is described by the perfumer himself, Jean-Claude Ellena, as being aristocratic and having noble qualities to it. That surely makes me curious about it.
    I am in EU. Thanks!

  • ElenaChiss says:

Yeah, this does it for me… Its radiant citrus fruit appears tonic and somewhat floral at first; eventually it evolves into a Muscular Lemon.
I don’t know this house, but after reading this review, I would be more than happy to start exploring it with Limone
    Thank you!

  • Loved Ida’s review: beginning about Amalfi and perfume description!! Mascular lemon – sounds very interesting- I am shure I will love this perfume! And I love mask too.
I am nit familiar with Laborator io Olfattivo perfumes.
    US

  • The point of the review was appealing, “…that Laboratorio Olfattivo Limone is no giggling, lemony vanillic musk; it’s a cologne to be reckoned with.” – US

  • Just lovely. My favorite line of Ida’s review is “revivifying elixir – elegant and suitable for everyone”. This is what appeals to me most about the perfume – the elegance. I’ve only tried Mandarino and it is wonderful; however, I adore the lemon note. <3 United States

  • I am searching for a lemon with substance and this sounds intriguing for our hot NC summers. I have never tried Labratorio Olfattivo before.

  • wandering_nose says:

Ida’s review of Limone is very sophisticated in itself and I need to say that it has made me more interested in the fragrance. On the spectrum of lemon – centered fragrances, Limone seems to be far away from the sweet, creamsicle or meringue – like creations that have gained popularity over the past few years. Limone sounds like pure class enveloped in a veil of citrusy freshness of Mediterranean provenance. Noble and perfectly balanced yet universally adaptable to everyone, regardless of gender, age, location and season. I have not tried any of Laboratorio Olfattivo’s creations. Thank you from Ireland, EU

  • Nom de Guerre says:

The involvement of JCE is enough to pique my interest and I’ve been on quite a musk binge as of recent:) This would be my first step into LO fragrances. Greetings from Riga, Latvia.

  • Belladonna says:

What a generous draw – thank you! Always love Ida’s words! In this case I’m on alert to “Olfattivo Limone is no giggling, lemony vanillic musk; it’s a cologne to be reckoned with, a fragrance rooted in gravitas”. Of course, since it’s Ellena – that makes all the difference too! I don’t know where to find this in the US, so I’ve never tried this line – although it sounds amazing! Would love the opportunity!

  • Super hot summer is coming, and tart and zesty lemon fragrance, made by famous perfumer is recipe for success.
Thank to Laboratorio Olfattivo, KAON and Ida
    USA

  • Very interesting review!!!
Fresh, bud “masculine” lemon, perfume like “dashing dark-maned male replete with hairy chest” – sound what I like and searching for- fresh, but masculine perfume!!!
Unfortunately, I am not familiar with this house.
    US

  • KMBfragrance says:

Lemon and ginger! Count me in. A citrus musky fragrance that doesn’t fall into sweet lemon meringue territory, even better. I’m eyeing the handsome, swarthy man metaphor with some incredulity, but I’m intrigued nonetheless. I live in Missouri USA, and unfortunately haven’t tried any Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrances yet.

  • A seroius lemon sounds wonderful. I’wear it in winter when we allbneed some sun!
    I’m in EU

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Ok, now I want to know what a muscular lemon smells like! This sounds so perfect for summer. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Claumarchini says:

Thanks Ida for this wonderful review, I totally agree when you speak about “nobility of spirit”.. . This is exactly what you think about when you sniff a creation from Mr Ellena: a perfect and flawless scent, yet one that appeals to everyone despite its perfection! I would love to try this fragrance! Greetings from Italy

  • Elizabeth Brittain says:

I’m a big fan of Ellena and his artistry. And lemon is pretty irresistible in the summer, especially if it brings to mind the Amalfi coast. This sounds gorgeous. I’m in the US.

  • Ida’s review evokes memories of hot and humid summer days longing for real refreshment. There is nothing like freshly squeezed lemon juice in a homemade lemonade with pieces of ice. Since I am also a fan of citrusy notes in fragrances but haven’t tried any lemony based, Limone by Laboratorio Olfattivo seems very appealing.
    I live in the EU.
Thank you for introducing Laboratorio Olfattivo citrusy perfumes!

  • Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrances I don’t know, Limone transported me to … Olya’s review from a few days ago, when she spoke about barefooted walk through orange groves. Almafi lemon groves I’d like to walk through, that’s how Limone smells i believe.
USA, and Germany from time to time

  • I absolutely loved this review. Muscular Lemon sounds very interesting lol, a great summer scent to have. I haven’t tried anything from this house as of yet, this would be a great introduction. I live in Indiana USA

  • doveskylark says:

I quite like the idea of an aristocratic and noble lemon fragrance. I think everything just improves with a splash of something lemony. I certainly find that lemon rejuvenates me on the most sweltering of summer days. I like that a note of ginger is in this fragrance. I haven’t tried anything from Laboratorio Olfattivo.
    I live in the USA.

  • I also love lemon to sniff as well as to eat. I’m intrigued by the ginger and pillowy musks in this. I’m in the USA.

  • I love myself a hefty dose of citruses in my fragrances to refresh and cool me on the long, lazy and super hot summer days. Many thanks for the review and the giveaway!

  • Sandro Mateush says:

Omg, I really love Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrances! I’ve got Vanhera & Kashnoir. Also, my favourites atm is Vetyverso, Baliflora & Mandarino.
I like that moment where they combine lemon direction with ginger orange leaf, sounds so interesting to me. And I like the idea of a masculine lemon.
Can’t wait to check this one out.
    Thank you for giveaway!

  • This sounds to die for. I, too, am a lemon fan. Your review really stirred my imagination. As I read, I kept trying to “picture” what you were smelling— a real joy. I haven’t tried any Laboratorio Olfattivo scents, but I can say Maître Ellena’s Un Jardin Sur Le Nil is what got me into perfumes! (USA)

  • M. Ellena’s creations for Perris Monte Carlo were such a delight. I’d love to be able to sample these. Lemon and musk don’t make me think ‘gravitas’ but I trust Ms. Meister’s opinion and can’t wait to give this series a try. I’m in the US and this house is new to me.

  • Michael Prince says:

What appeals to me about Ida’s review of Laboratorio Olfattivo Limone is her detailed review about the fragrance itself. I learned about the perfumers vision of him as a child on the Amalfi Coast with all the lemon trees along the mediterranean coast a nice touch of spicy ginger, orange leaf, and a nice clean white musk. I haven’t tried any Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrances. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • Lemon notes (citruses in general, really) are bright, uplifting, and also notoriously ephemeral in perfumery. I think it would be really interesting to see how Ellena, known for his watercolour, light, abstract style, take on this idea of a “muscular” lemon! I don’t think I’ve smelled any Ellena fragrance that uses a noticeable dose of scratchy woody-ambers, and I’m really curious to try out how he handles these powerful materials!

I live in France, and would love to try Limone. Thank you for the giveaway!

  • petergigov says:

Cozy and welcoming lemon fragrance, with ginger and musky notes in the base, versatile fragrances like Limone i like wearing almost all year round. Learning about the perfumer behind it, Jean Claude Elena, makes me curious.
I have not smelled Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrances yet .
    Nice giveaway, USA

  • oh, how jc ellena it sounds 🙂 i would love to have this for summer! -harper (usa)

Ida’s take on Limone reminded me of making, and eating Lemon Tart, with non candied lemon slices on top , and having a nice rest of Amalfi coast.

I too have a love affair with lemon, that fleeting glimpse of citrus freshness that super charges everything that it touches and your review reminded me of that.

i would love to get my nose on this fragrance.

I haven’t had a chance to try anything from this house before.

Laboratorio Olfattivo is such an underated house. I do own bottles of Alambar and Daimiris , and i love both. Value for the money is great.
Now sure about the US prices , because i bought Alambar and Daimiris when i was in Europe , but over there both are € 98,00/100ml , the black line was around €115 .
I highly recommend to all fragrance lovers on Cafleurebon to get the sample set .
I visited Amalfi region twice, I like lemon, of course I like Jean-Claude Elena , Limone I’ll also enjoy.
