Laboratorio Olfattivo Bergamotto

Great is the sun, and wide he goes
Through empty heaven without repose;
And in the blue and glowing days
More thick than rain he showers his rays. ~ Summer Sun by Robert Louis Stevenson

Pamplemousse Erotique, Salvador Dali 1969.

If we could only trace the person(s) responsible for the much-beloved hybrid citrus fruit which is purported to be a cross between the lemon and bitter orange – bergamot. Native to southern Italy – in particular, Calabria – this zesty aromatic fruit grows to be roughly the size of an orange and sports a color closer to lime than lemon. Laboratorio Olfattivo Bergamotto, created in 2021 (as well as Limone), is part of Maître Parfumeur Jean-Claude Ellena’s Viaggio in Italia trilogy (Mandarino has been reviewed earlier) composed for the niche brand: a Veritable Citrus Celebration. Bergamotto is one of the most photorealistic fruits made sensate, a lucid olfactory dream.

Jean Claude Ellena for Laboratorio Olfattivo

 Jean-Claude Ellena via  Laboratorio Olfattivo

“Yes, I have preferences and they vary according to my needs, my desires. I have passing loves, as well as solid, perennial loves, among which there is my love for bergamot. It was time for me to make that official” ». Jean-Claude Ellena

Perfumers are prudent not to profess favorites – but who among us does not harbor one, or more? Jean-Claude Ellena describes the above so precisely: what we need, what we desire drives our capricious selves to crave and prefer particular aromas at specific times. Bergamot is one such ingredient that is favored as a sparkling prelude in perfumery. Like other citruses, it is a challenge to maintain throughout a fragrance due to its low molecular weight. Bergamot smells like golden unfiltered sunshine, as it helps to form a bridge between top and heart notes. In Laboratorio Olfattivo Bergamotto, finest Calabrian bergamot is succeeded by the expressed oil of the bitter orange – also known as bigarade orange, Seville orange, marmalade orange or sour orange.

Nina Ricci Bigarde 1971

The essential oil from its rind imparts a familiar mood-elevating, delicately bitter tonicity to a fragrance which is immediately recognizable. This divine bitter orange reminds me of a long-discontinued Nina Ricci favorite entitled simply Bigarade: created by perfumer Francis Fabron in 971, with its fluted Lalique flacon – as well as Jean-Claude Ellena’s 2002 exquisite Bigarade Concentrée for Frederic Malle. Cardamom is an intuitive companion (it is gleefully included in the afore-mentioned fragrances as well), providing that sweet/savory spiciness which is so complimentary. Bergamotto’s soft musky base feels perfect; anything more would distract from its transparent étincelant elegance, ever-so-effortless and spontaneously joyful.

Best Italian Cocktails

Vecchio Amaro del Capo via wiki

Bottled Calabrian sunshine sings of being seated beneath a shady tree heavy with fruit and leaf – be it olive or citrus, while sipping an icy local specialty, Vecchio Amaro del Capo. I envision us anointing ourselves with liberal lashings of Laboratorio Olfattivo Bergamotto, while imbibing this aperitif distillation of 29 native herbs, roots, flowers and fruit which this region has produced for four successive generations by the Fratelli Caffo. The lively complex flavors of mint, anise, licorice, chamomile, rosemary, bay, both bitter and sweet orange, lemon, pepper, lavender and orange blossom swirl about our palates.

We are thoroughly engaged in the lovely Italian pastime of Dolce Far Niente (aka pleasant idleness) as a heavy sweet languor possesses our limbs and eyelids and we drink in the sun in undisturbed indolence; one’s private citrus celebration of summer at a snail’s pace. Hammocks are mandatory, along with light straw hats, sandals and crinkly pale-hued linen.

Notes: Calabrian Bergamot, Bitter Orange, Cardamom, White Musk

Flacon generously provided by Laboratorio Olfattivo – many, many thanks!  I adore it. My nose is my own…

Thank you Ida for taking us on that journey of colour and fragrance and putting me gently under an olive tree with that icy delight, Vecchio Amaro del Capo. Of course, I would be wearing this enticing Bergamotto. I also enjoyed your in depth analysis of the fruit itself and its wonderful properties. Sounds like its delicacy is well captured in this creation. Lovely! I’m out of range globally so congrats in advance to the lucky winner!

I like the description of being under a shady tree in Calabria while sipping a fruity drink. I live in Maryland USA. I haven’t tried anything from this house, but Bergamotto certainly sounds like a wonderful citrus fragrance for a hot sunny day.

  • Citrus fragrances are a staple for me during the warmer months. I enjoyed reading about Vecchio Amaro del Capo and will definitely hunt it down for a treat. Bergamotto sounds refreshing. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! Mich USA

  • I love Ida’s reviews! ❤️ Dolce Far Niente? Yes, please! This phrase alone makes me want to spray Bergamotto this very instant: “one’s private citrus celebration of summer at a snail’s pace.” Thank you, Ida, for the wonderful information about Calabrian bergamot, how it pairs with cardamom (I really love those kinds of details), and comparisons to other fragrances.
I was born into the MTV generation and also into the “White Musk” generation. My first perfume (though not my first perfume Love) was Armani’s White for Her, many friends wore Body Shop White Musk, etc. I’m curious about the white musk base in this fragrance (so many potentially amazing scents are let down with the wrong musky base, imho). Maitre Ellena does amazingly refreshing, elegant musky bases! This is hard to do! They often glisten with a kind of chalky Grand Cru Chablis finish, rather than a porcine over oaked Chardonnay drag. Limone, Mandarino, and Bergamotto are surely joyful, elegant fragrances perfect for August! I would love to try them all! A huge thank you to CaFleureBon, Laboratorio Olfattivo, & KAON for this opportunity! USA

  • Ida made me feel like I was in Italy… Summertime relaxing on hammocks. Sipping a delicious cold drink. The fragrance notes are beautiful. I.have not sample from this house. Thank you for this Chance. USA

  • The verse by Robert Louis Stevenson in the beginning set the tone for this lovely review of Laboratorio Olfattivo Bergamotto by Ida. Hot thick rays of Sun and we get the perfect respite sitting under a shady tree heavy with fruit and leaf, as Ida says. Enjoyed reading about the description of bergamot fruit, and of the perfume itself. Perfect for pleasant idleness. No experience with this brand, yet. Thanks for the review and draw. I am in the USA.

This article is my introduction to the Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrance line…and, what a lovely introduction. Thank you Ida for drawing me in on this fragrance via Jean-Claude Ellena and his creation, Bergamotto. I can imagine myself lying in a hammock, under a leafy fruity/citrusy tree enjoying a Vecchio Amaro del Capo. I look forward to further exploring the fragrances this house has to offer. I live in Pennsylvania USA.

  • It makes sense for the project to be given to a perfumer if the perfumer really loves the central note to be featured in the perfume and it is clear that Ellena has always loved Bergamot. Laboratorio Olfattivo Bergamotto seems both classic, as rosemary was in many citrus perfumes of the past, and modern at the same time. It is a challenge to create a good citrusy perfume now, given the ban on some many ingredients that were heavily featured in citrus perfumes. I think I might have Nina Ricci’s Bigarade though I fear it has lost lot of its magnificence since citrus perfumes dont age well.

  • I really loved the presentation of the fragrance. I live in Poland, EU. I haven’t tried anything yet but I would love to try something from this house soon.

  • I enjoyed learning about the fruits themselves: the bergamot and the bitter orange. I wonder, can you buy a bitter orange at the store? The drink mentioned Vecchio Amaro del Capo sounds amazing. Does it taste like Pernod? I’d love to find that aperitif and spray some Bergamotto at the same time- just like the story. Right now all I have is my beloved Earl Grey tea. Thank you for the draw, TX USA.

  • Dubaiscents says:

It’s a shame that the workhorse of the perfume world, Bergamot, is really the focus of the scent. I love that Laboratorio Olfattivo chose to rectify that here and enlisted the master himself, Jean-Claude Elena to compose it. I would love to smell this, I’m sure it’s gorgeous if Ida raves about it. This whole line always puts out amazing work. Thanks for the draw. US

I like the description of being under a shady tree in Calabria while sipping a fruity drink. Bergamotto it is a woderful citric parfum for hot days in summer.
    I haven’t tried anything
    from this house.

  • Laboratorio Olfattivo is getting more, and more attention in the fragrance community, still is one of the most underrated niche houses. I own two bottles , Alambar and Daimiris , and i love both. Value for the money is great.
Now sure about the US prices , both I bought when i was in Europe , but over there the prices are €98,00/100ml , the black line was around €115 .
I highly recommend to all fragrance lovers on Cafleurebon to get the sample set , it’s worth it.
I visited Calabria region , I like bergamot and cardamom, of course I like Jean-Claude Elena , I’ll also enjoy Bergamotto i’m sure.
All @cafleurebon @idameister @laboratorioolfattivo @kaondistribution @jeanclaude.ellena I already follow. I used to also follow @rdrago09 , but either profile is deleted, banned or just changed . At the moment such profile is non existent.
    Thank you
USA only , hopefully not for long

This review brought me back to my time in Tuscany, enjoying plenty of Dolce Far Niente. I imagine the actual fragrance would do the same. To my recollection I have not tried other Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrances, but am familiar with the brand. Located in Louisiana, USA.

  • I haven’t tried any from Laboratorio Olfattivo, but I do love orange, both as a note and eating it, and I also love to work of Mr. Ellena, so I am sure this one will be a hit for me.
Thank you! I am in Europe

  • I have tried Alambar from OL. It is an excellent amber. I am interested in Bergamotto due to the description of the complex aromatics acccompanied by the citrus.
    I live in Denmark, EU.

  • Jean -Claude Ellena is the first Master Parfumeur i learned to identify his aquarelistic, simple and exquisite aristocratic style and i love his work, this Laboratorio Olfattivo Bergamotto seems to have the right summer vibe! Thanks for review and the draw, from Romania with love!

  • What a beautiful review, Ida!!
Unfortunately I haven’t tested Nina Ricci Bigarade – if true never have heard about that perfume! I love bergamot, freshness and some herbal notes! And believe that this perfume is another masterpiece from MR Hellena.

  • Mary Stephens Mitchell says:

It’s time for bergamot, one of the most utilized ingredients in all of perfumery, to be brought to the forefront by the Master. And who better to tempt us with her descriptive powers than Ms. Meister? Thank you for this chance; I have not yet tried other Laboratoria Olfattivo fragrances. I live in Virginia, USA.

  • emorandeira says:

    Hello

I LOVE how ida explains how the freshness of the bergamot fades into the bittersweet vibe of the bigarade Orange and how It developes after. It is very good explained and I can almost feel the fragrance.
I had not yet the opportunity to try other perfumes by this brands but I probably get soon samples of vanhera and narcotic since are two fragrances which keep my attention. My name is Edgar (parfum_sindromico) and I live in Tenerife (Spain, EU).
THANK YOU FOR YOUR AMAZING REVIEWS!!

  • A great sounding fragrance for the rest of summer. I don’t recall trying anything from this line. US

  • Well its all about Italien summer and smells of it with lavender and sweet and bitter orange and add on that musk. I am love it. I never tried any Laboratorio fragrance s but sure love to. I am in Sweden EU

  • Since I am a lover of zesty citrusy scents, I have been intrigued by Laboratorio Olfattivo’s current citrusy releases. Thank you Ida for introducing this bottled sunshine to us. The review transported me to the countryside in the south of Italy on the hot August day. Enjoyed learning that the master perfumer’s solid favourite note is bergamot.
    I reside in the EU:

  • I am a sucker for citrus and for “dolce far niente” and cardamom! Though I’ve never tried a Laboratorio Olfattivo offering, thanks to Ida there is a new fragrance on my wishlist. I am in the U.S.

  • Beautiful article Ida! I am a total bergamot lover and love how you describe it as golden sunshine because that is a perfect description of how it makes me feel. Also love the Italian Dolce Far Niente, is there any better feeling than lying in a hammock in the sun with a drink and being idle as you said? I think not! This sounds like a gorgeous choice for summer days or days when I need to add my own sunshine! NY, USA

  • Great review! I enjoyed the description of how the perfumer addressed the question of how to extend the citrus notes throughout the life of the scent, including having bergamot’s low-molecular-weight shortened lifespan be gradually replaced by bitter orange. A very interesting idea that makes me realize just how much thought and artistry go into each fragrance, even for the simplest notes. I have yet to try any other Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrances. Cheers from NC, USA

  • Bergamot is such a zingy refreshing note, I can only imagine how delightful Laboratorio Olfattivo Bergamotto smells. I loved that you opened the review with the Summer Sun poem. It set the stage for this fragrance story beautifully! August is the month of all things citrus for me. From lemonade to limoncello I love it all! I have not tried any Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrances but I did read the review of Mandarino which seems like another beauty. Thanks for the giveaway. In the USA.

  • Claumarchini says:

Thank you very much Ida for this review! What can we say? The combination of bergamot and cardamom makes my eyes heart-shaped! I have not tried anything by Laboratorio Olfattivo yet, but I love M. Ellena’s work and his mastery and the quality of the raw materials make for sure an amazing scent! Oh, how love to be seated under that tree with Ida, sipping Amaro del Capo!! Greetings from Italy

  • wandering_nose says:

I love the way Ida describes Bergamotto as ever-so-effortless and spontaneously joyful, and provides some backing info, like the alternative names for bergamot. It soulds like the perfect lift-me-up fragrance for the trying times we have come to live in. I love bergamot – the scent itself, the flavor it lends to my favorite teas, and the extremely important role it has been playing in perfumery for so long and will be going forward. I have not had the chance to try any of Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrances as of yet, however I would love to smell them as they all sound mouthwateringly delicious. Based in Ireland, EU

  • This sounds like a citrus explosion! I like Lauryn’s imagery of bottled calabrian sunshine experience sitting under a fruit laden tree. The addition of soft spice cardamom and a musk base rounds out the composition nicely. I’ve not tried any Laboratorio Olfativvo scents. I’m in MD, USA.

  • joshuabrian says:

The notes sound lovely. As to lift our weary heads from mundanity. Forever touched by the perfume Gods. From USA. Not tried any offerings from the house.

  • Laboratorio Olfattivo i know because of Alkemi . Nice balsamic gourmand with smoky touches, and decent dose of red wine in the base. Summer offerings I don’t know.
Bergamotto is appealing to me because of its bitterness , right amount of sweetness, spiciness , and playful cardamom accord.
Hammocks are mandatory … haha , i agree
    Thank you

  • This one looks perfect as a perfume to be used while enjoying a lazy, relaxed holiday on the Italian beaches… ‘We are thoroughly engaged in the lovely Italian pastime of Dolce Far Niente (aka pleasant idleness) as a heavy sweet languor possesses our limbs and eyelids and we drink in the sun in undisturbed indolence; one’s private citrus celebration of summer at a snail’s pace. Hammocks are mandatory, along with light straw hats, sandals and crinkly pale-hued linen.’

Thanks for the review & draw. Europe.

  • Thank you for this wonderful review! I already imagine Laboratorio Olfattivo’s Bergamotto as a portal able to transport the wearer to Italian lands, where it is sunny and warm, where everything is relaxed, where there are no worries nor trouble, where you can be a free bird!

  • Thanks Ida for a great review, i love citrus fragrances especially during summer times. I liked to learn about Vecchio Amaro del Capo! Thanks for the chance to smell this great perfume! Living in the EU

  • Belladonna says:

What a beautiful review! Never have tried Vecchio Amaro del Capo, but it sounds luscious! Big Ellena fan, this must be wonderful! Thank you for the generous draw opportunity, in the US, I have not seen Laboratorio Olfattivo before these great reviews.

  • Bryant Worley says:

Ida made this fragrance sound fantastic. I really enjoyed hearing of how relaxing it is: ” In Laboratorio Olfattivo Bergamotto, finest Calabrian bergamot is succeeded by the expressed oil of the bitter orange – the essential oil from its rind imparts a familiar MOOD-ELEVATING, delicately bitter tonicity to a fragrance which is immediately recognizable.” Along with the rest of her breakdown, it is a must-have.

I have not ried any Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrances (as of yet), but am looking forward to getting my nose (to name a few) on this one, Vanagloria, Mandarino, and Vetyverso.

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • Ida’s evocative review immediately transported me to a beautiful “foresty” beach in southern Italy, basking in the glorious sun and listening to the Mediterranean waves hitting the shore. An amaro is a nice drink always and anyways, yet I would personally sip some limoncello while wearing Bergamotto. There is never too much citrus in life!

I have never tried anything from Laboratorio Olfattivo before and I am in the EU.
    Thanks!

  • IvanVelikov says:

I few months ago, when I read Ida review on Limone I thought about the saying When life gives you lemons, make lemonade

The phrase fits Limone perfectly , now the fragrance is in my possession , my second Laboratorio Olfattivo ,together with Tonkade.
Bergamotto is again made by the same master perfumer, with natural smelling bergamot and cardamom. Sounds just as good as Limone .
Ida thanks again for the fine work, I’ll be happy to win the new citrus fragrance.

Oh wow I really need to try Vecchio Amaro del Capo! It sounds delicious! I have not yet tried any fragrances in this series but this one sounds amazing. I love the combination of cardamom and citrus. I had always thought of cardamom as a winter spice but I am learning how wonderful it can be in the summer heat. Thank you for the draw. I am in the US.

  • This review sent me in Italy, under a lemon tree. Thank you for this amazing journey! I never tried a Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrance. Regards from EU (Romania)

  • I plan on trying many fragrances from this house, but I haven’t tried even one release from them yet. I’m very interested in trying this fragrance for different reasons, e.g. I’ve been familiarizing myself with bergamot more and more as time goes on; I do enjoy bergamot, and this fragrance seems like it is a good use of bergamot, and to the extent that it can remind someone of certain classic, high-quality fragrances which were known for the bergamot that was in them. I want to see what the musk, the cardamom, and the bitter orange in this are like, and in combination with the bergamot. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • Ida Meister take on Bergamotto reminded me of making, and later eating Orange Cardamom Cake, drinking bergamot juice , and enjoying time. Happy fragrance for warm sunny days
    I’m new to Laboratorio Olfattivo
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

  • What a fantastic review by Ida
I learned a lot about Bergamotto which is from Calabria and that this one is very citrusy. My favorite Laboratorio Olfattivo is Baliflora by Jean Claude Ellena which I first read about on Cafleurebon

  • sephrenia300 says:

Nice review! I am so intrigued by Bergamotto as it is the embodiment of a favorite note of one of my favorite perfumes, Jean-Claude Ellena. I very much enjoy Mr. Ellena’s aesthetic and his attention to detail. It is in large part due to him that Hermes is, in my opinion, head and shoulders above all other designer houses. I generally don’t enjoy fruity and fresh fragrances, but since he has also made two of my favorites in that genre, Un Jardin sur le Nil and Un Jardin en Méditerranée, I have no doubt that Bergamotto will appeal to me immensely.

I have not tried other Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrances, but now I am very eager to try more, especially Rosamunda. I live in the US.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thank you for this beautiful review Ida.

I’m just imagining myself hammocking in a bergamot tree, surrounded by so many of these citrus plants on a sunny day/ The warmth of the sun scents the air with citrus and there is a cool breeze wafting around.

Utter balm for the soul. Such is the work of Ellena.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Jean-Claude Ellena has his way when it comes to citrus fragrances, cologne type of perfumes, transparent pieces of fragrant beauty. I am curious about this one because I am familiar with some of his other scents in the same genre, and I totally love them!
    Thanks from Europe!

  • Thank you for this wonderful review, full of sunshine and interesting artworks (it is a firsr time i see that Dali drawing)! This summer I am in a mood for citrus drinks and scents, for “one’s private citrus celebration of summer at a snail’s pace.” I was surprised hearing that Laboratorio Olfattivo has released 3 scents dedicated to 3 different citrus fruits. How they hold them together!? – I was asking myself, knowing that hesperides are so volatile. But, of course, if they are made by master Ellena, i can be calm and don’t ask more questions.
Thank you for the opportunity, I would like to take part in this draw, I am from the EU.

  • I’ve been lately (July )in Sardinia for a trip, but in an instant I would pack my bags and go to Calabria too for a Vecchio Amaro del Capo!

I am grateful for this opportunity to try this “bottled Calabrian sunshine which sings of being seated beneath a shady tree heavy with fruit and leaf”. Such a realistic description, Ida!

Thank you for the chance, Laboratorio Olfattivo, KAON and CaFleureBon. I live in Europe and my favorite Laboratorio Olfattivo is, well, Mandarino.

  • doveskylark says:

As someone who enjoys bitter orange immensely (especially in marmalade), I am very much looking forward to trying Bergamotto from Laboratorio Olfattivo. I like that Ida described Dolce Far Niente in her review. I would love to wear this fragrance while blissfully idling in a hammock and drinking a bitter digestive drink….I am very happy to learn about Vecchio Amaro del Capo from this review. I haven’t tried anything from Laboratorio Olfattivo.
    I live in the USA.

  • I have not tried anything from this house, but the sent sounds refreshing and delightful. I love reading about these beautiful fragrances. I’m in Maryland

  • I’d love to try a refreshing and cold Vecchio Amaro del Capo! I love fragrances that are evocative of a region, place, and time. There are other Bergamot fragrances I really enjoy, but this one sounds so lovely! I have not tried anything from this house before. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • I quite like Bigarade Concentreeso I wonder how dit Jean Claude Ellena celebrate his beloved bergamote this time.
And summer is a great time for Dolce far niente.
    I’m in Eu

  • Laboratorio Olfattivo fragrances I don’t know, Bergamotto transported me to Calabria, but also to … Olya’s recent review , when she spoke about barefooted walk through orange groves. I wish I had the time for such vacation, and walk through orange and bergamot groves in Calabria, but I don’t. Bergamotto would be fair replacement . I’ll have to sample Laboratorio Olfattivo, and find some time for Dolce Far Niente
Thanks for the review, and the draw
USA, and Germany from time to time

  • I discovered Laboratorio Olfattivo just recently. The one that impressed me the most was Tonkade. I end up buying a bottle after i fishished my sample. Great dry fruits, vanilla and cardamom oriental.
Bergamotto is fresh summer offering, it’s created by Jean-Claude Elena, Ida likes to, i don’t need more convincing
Thank you Laboratorio Olfattivo, KAON and Ida

  • Bergamot and bigarade are two scents that I love. Bigarade Concentree is one of my fall favorites!
I have never been to Calabria. But Ida’s suggestion of swinging in a hammock with a cool scented breeze sounds marvelous!
