Isabey Paris Prends-Moi Review (Luca Maffei) + “Magic trick” Draw

My “catnip” has always been makeup, and I swear I can sense the happy receptors in my brain lighting up like a Christmas tree each time I tear open the foil and swatch a new item on the back of my hand. Only a makeup addict can understand the ASMR tingle triggered by the *click* of a Chanel Rouge Allure lipstick, feeling the texture of a Caron puff on your cheeks, or the nostalgia for the special metallic heaviness of a Dior blue vintage compact, perfectly fitting in your hand. I must confess that after the last declutter of my vanity drawers (because, as opposed to fragrance, no matter how well you store it, makeup DOES expire) I am striving to be a makeup minimalist. But “I want to lead the Victorian life, surrounded by exquisite clutter.”- sighted I, quoting Freddie Mercury.

The workaround for periodically getting my “hit” whilst keeping the makeup addiction in check was embarking on the thrilling and never-ending quest of finding the perfect makeup scents. Compared to wearing makeup, where I seldom step out of my comfort zone of nude lips & winged eyeliner, when it comes to makeup – inspired – perfume, I am adventurous and I take delight in every side of the olfactive vanity rainbow:  from powdery to creamy and from girly, fruity and sweet to the dark, deep and vampy.

Opening a parenthesis, notable mentions in my hall of fame are (so far, and in no particular order): Meteorites and the promised-but-not-quite-delivered resemblance they bear to the iconic Guerlain powder; the almost cult-status Histoires de Parfums Moulin Rouge 1889 for its vintage –almost turned lipstick accord; the sexy and fresh raspberry note of modern fruity lippies sublimated in Juliette has a Gun Lipstick Fever; Frederic Malle  Lipstick Rose for the eyelash fluttering a what you see is what you get attitude; Lipstick On by Maison Martin Margiela for when you need a playful wink from a set of over-the-top fake lashes; and last but certainly NOT the last my beloved Terry de Gunzburg Ombre MercureRobert Herrmann brilliantly described as “If Guerlain’s L’Heure Bleue had a wild younger sister who’s never seen without wearing her Doc Marten knee-high boots”.

Enter Isabey Paris Prends-Moi (it means take Me in English), and I remember, before sampling it, reading the ”Red Satin Lipstick” note of the pyramid with my heart rate going up and my nostrils fluttering with Pavlovian anticipative joy.

First, let’s turn back our time machine to the early 1930s, when the house of Isabey rushed to bring out to the North American market their latest perfumed offering, held in a beautiful and minimalist bottle. An unfortunate misspell on the label of Prends Moi (translated as “take me”) did not help lower the eyebrows of the public in front of the scandalous name, and I am sure a lot of gasps of surprise were heard all over the American continent when reading the daring French label. I giggle and can’t help thinking about the infamous Nars Cosmetics makeup line and how shockvertising still works today.

Almost a century later, when recreating and re-imagining the perfume, Luca Maffei said: “I was inspired for this creation by the last moment before the ultimate act of love. The adrenaline, the warmth of the skin, a kiss on the neck, the chills. So I wanted to use bold and sensual raw materials, which represented a veiled eroticism.”

Scintillating, bright, youthful and carefree, Prends-Moi conjured, from the first spray, a “butterflies in the stomach” level of excitement in me.  The mixture of spicy pick pepper, the sunny and sweet bergamot, mixed in with the tartness of raspberry bring to my mind the “glossy-glossy” crazy days of the early 2000s: frosted makeup, shiny lips, and the trademark overdose of pink blush. Diving deeper into the perfume’s heart, things got more gown up (read as in adult) and sensual. If you have a moment, google the opening scene of Le Mépris by Jean-Luc Godard (1963) with Brigitte Bardot & Michel Piccoli. When you will hear the violins playing in the background and see Brigitte’s shadow slowly moving, well, that’s on the level of delicious lazy intimacy and sensuousness the perfume manages to capture.

Le Mépris, by Jean-Luc Godard (1963)  with Brigitte Bardot & Michel Piccoli

Same as with Godard’s cinematography, where we often see contrasting vibrant and bold hues paired together, to play off each other –  in the heart of the fragrance we have a red rose playing the innocent game, bouncing off a ridiculously sensual tuberose. The charged tension and interplay between the two main floral actors is beautifully highlighted by the rich textured backdrop, where we have the intimate warmth of cardamom interwoven with a lipsticky breath of iris and violet.  A whiff of powdery cocoa note brings to mind the scent of one of my favorite bronzers and the end-of-summer ritualistic gesture of emphasizing the deep bronze of my arms with an added layer of shimmer, sprinkling in just the right amount of pampering up for a summer evening excitement to the scented ritual. In the blue hour” of the perfume, bathed in the long ambery shadows of the night, the camera moves, with long, sinuous frames to a whispered and sensual sandalwood end.

“Take me” is a perfume that showcases Luca Maffei’s magician skill of taking a heavy note (in this case tuberose) and making it “float”, imponderable, showcasing its natural beauty using unexpected nuances and abstract associationsIf makeup is “catnip” for you too, buy (I almost said swatch) of Prends-Moi for its delicious rush of almost tactile delightful facets: a glossy fruity texture, a satiny creamy lipstick note that never feels waxy or stale, and a powdery cloud with coca undertones. If you could care less about makeup, but love sensual florals with a twist, do give it a try for its contemporary take on tuberose.

  • I love the smell of makeup also. Have tried Lipstick On.
The notes in this fragrance sounds so amazing.
Would absolutely love to own a bottle
    USA

I think the most interesting part to me about the fragrance is the cocoa and sandalwood undertones. But I do love florals as well. I’m not sure I have a favorite “makeup scent” but the too faced chocolate palate comes to mind when we talk about scented makeup. Located in St. Louis, MO

  • joshuabrian says:

Thanks for the draw! The notes actually sound amazing! This would go straight to the fiancé. In USA.

  • The presentation of the fragrance and stories behind it sparks my interest the most. I live in Poland, EU. I think Magic trick would be my favorite makeup scent.

  • Nicolette’s review made me really want to smell this fragrance. Make up can smell good especially lipstick. My favorite brand is Dior, Red of course. The notes pink pepper, rose very sexy. Another great fragrance from this house to look forward to. Thank you for this Chance. USA

  • I understand the love of opening a new product. I am currently that way with fragrance. It is very exciting and I want more (so I had to put myself on a no buy for a while). This excites me. So beautiful. Endearing yet sexy. Complicated and nuanced. In maryland.

  • I understand what Nicoleta meant with the ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) from opening one’s favorite perfume bottles, or other things. No experience with this brand, but in terms of favorite scents – well, there are a few depending on the time, space, mood, and so on – Sartorial, Drakkar Noir, Halston, Antaeus come to mind. Isabey Paris Prends-Moi seems to be very heady perfume from the listed notes, especially sandalwood, amber, Rose Absolut, Red Satin Lipstick, Tuberose Absolut, Cardamom, iris. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • It’s been awhile since I’ve smelled a “butterflies in the stomach” type of fragrance, but no doubt Luca could pull it off. I love his creations. Love that bottle. I am not too familiar with make up type notes in fragrance, but I have smelled Moulin Rouge, so I don’t have a favorite, but maybe Prends-Moi could be it. Love the lipstick popsicle, made me smile on this hot day. Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • The raspberry note along with how Nicoleta describes this fragrance as sensual florals with a twist has piqued my beautiful wife’s attention. Favorite lipstick note…I actually just had my nose on it earlier today while visiting my favorite fragrance store (Perfumology) with my daughter. Lipstick Fever by Juliette Has A Gun. Pennsylvania

  • Lesley Hendrickson says:

Wow— I feel like this is me in a fragrance! All of the notes are some of my favorite smells! Plus the mention of makeup and vintage compacts and perfume bottles sounds right up my alley!

  • I was inspired for this creation by the last moment before the ultimate act of love, the adrenaline, the warmth on the skin, a kiss on the neck, the chills. So I wanted to use a bold and sensual raw materials which represented a veiled eroticism!! Nicoleta should write poetry!! Ohio. Maybe some kind of cherry/rose!! Good luck everyone!!!

  • Nicoleta! What a captivating review! ❤️
Thank you for mentioning Juliette has a Gun Lipstick Fever. I recently spent time with this scent in a blind sample box from Olfactif – fun! The raspberry-violet-iris combination in that perfume was lovely, but after some time, I was left wanting more. Perhaps Isabey’s Prends-Moi is the answer? Prends-Moi shares the raspberry & violet-iris notes, yet I imagine they appear wildly different with rose, tuberose, cardamom, & cocoa as companions. Fleur Nocturne is such a beautiful perfume that I give Prends-Moi the benefit of the doubt & must try it! Thank you for this wonderful opportunity! USA
ps – I will be referring to my 3 year-old’s constant mess as “the Victorian life, surrounded by exquisite clutter” ❤️ thank you Freddie Mercury & Nicoleta!

  • I love the theme/ thread of makeup and scent. My favorite scents that remind me of makeup are Putain des Palaces and Boudoir. I live in the United States. Thank you for the drawing.

  • Dubaiscents says:

I also really enjoy a good makeup scent with Guerlain’s Insolense being my favorite lipstick scent and Riz Poudre by Pierre Guillaume as my favorite face powder scent. I’ve smelled Prends-Moi and also enjoyed the cosmetic vibe immensely. Plus the red bottle is gorgeous and perfectly suited to the fragrance. Thanks for the draw. US

  • Jmmcmenamin says:

Isabey is among my very favorite perfume houses. I truly love both Fleur Nocturne and Lys Noir. I’m also a fan of JHAG, Lipstick Fever for a “makeup scent”, which is another solid perfume house. I love a floral with a cocoa note, and knowing it’s Isabey, is most appealing to me.
    In Louisiana USA.

  • I’m loving the makeup scents. They remind me of the smell of my grandmother’s makeup drawer in the 1970’s. She always wore Revlon lipstick and Coty face powder. I own Lipstick On and it’s amazing. In CA, USA.

  • I have heard of Isabey Paris, but never knew that they were on the market for such a long time, before the 30s!
Prends-Moi has some interesting notes and I am sure I am going to love this perfume. Thank you! I am in Europe

  • Any different and contemporary take on tuberose is a ‘catnip’ for me and Luca Maffei’s work interests me, thank you for the Prends-Moi review and the draw, from Romania with love!

  • I am glad the lipstick trend is not over and Luca gives us another one in Isabey Paris Prends-Moi. Luca did an amazing job of iris in L’Attesa and I expect that this fragrance does for spicy rose what L’Attesa did for buttery iris. I am in US

  • Fraghead Summy says:

This review made me curious now, and i so want to smell this frag. Juliette has a gun lipstick fever has been one of my favorites in the past and the sense of eroticism which this fragrance seems to invoke interests me. My fav make up scent is prada candy gloss.

A beautiful piece by Nicoleta my favourite makeup scent is Dior homme parfum. I am intrigued by the notes especially rose absolute, cardamom, tuberose absolute, and sandalwood. I agree Luca Maffei is an absolute genius and magician. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

A house that I am not familiar with but I am intrigued by nonetheless. Thanks a lot from the UK

Because I love touberose and from Nicoleta’s eview it results that it is an old school perfume similar to Caron (I still have the Sacred perfume from Nicoleta), Guerlain.
I am from Eu Bucharest Romania Europe

  • I really like the bottle and the creator’s idea behind this fragrance: Almost a century later, when recreating and re-imagining the perfume, Luca Maffei said: “I was inspired for this creation by the last moment before the ultimate act of love. • Wow! The combination of these notes sounds very unique. I like the twist of raspberry. Like Nicoleta, I confess to being a makeup lover. I have more than enough yet it calls to me. Her comparisons to different makeup scents and Prends-Moi was creative and what drew me into this review. Lipstick On is the only lipstick type fragrance I’ve smelled and I enjoyed wearing it. My favorite makeup smell is definitely Guerlain’s Meteorites powder. In the USA.

  • NituNicolae says:

My favourite “makeup scent” would be Dior Fahrenheit. Nicoleta has done an amazing review, very interesting combination on notes, especially Cocoa Absolute. Thank for the giveaway. I live in Romania, EU.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I love this! I love the addition of cocoa and how you describe it as the scent of bronzer. I have a cocoa scented highlighter that I swear I only use for the scent. My favorite makeup scent memory is being young and stealing into my mom’s makeup stash and that scent that wafted up when I opened the drawer. Thank you for the draw. In the US.

  • I loved the Le Mépris reference to convey the level of intimacy captured by this scent, the red satin lipstick note also calls my eye.
I own one of Luca Maffei´s creations, Dangerous rose, a vampy spicy rose-oud scent, and I am on the fence of getting Leather attraction, also created by him for the same house. I am sure the re-imagination of Prends-Moi will not disappoint just for it being created by the same perfumer and by looking at the lipstick-tuberose-rose-cocoa note combination.
My favourite makeup scents are Putain des palaces by eldo and Poudrextase by Marlou; I quite enjoy an animalic touch in an otherwise floral- powdery fragance.

    I live in Spain, EU

  • I enjoy makeup/lipstick scents in fragrance. It reminds me of a more glamorous era when ladies retired to the powder room to touch up. From the notes, this sounds like a voluptuous fragrance. In particular, the tuberose, raspberry and cocoa read very feminine and elegant. I’m not familiar with any Isabel Paris scents but would live to try this one. I’m in MD, USA.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the great review Nicoleta.

I have always loved the talcy scent of my mothers makeup, especially her lipstick, which has a scent I can’t really put a finger on – it’s almost like an iris musk cocoa butter combination that I find supremely comforting. I could take in that scent forever. Your review brought back so many memories.

I think my favourite makeup scent would be Commodity Orris.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I’m in the US and I love that lipstick note. It brings back memories of watching my grandmother get ready for work when I was a little girl. That first blast of Lipstick On was glorious but the dry down didn’t appeal to me. I’ll have to add this one to my list. I can relate to Nicoleta’s satisfaction with the click of a high-end lipstick tube and the love of a nicely weighted compact!

  • Isabey Prends-Moi would be a perfect gift to my special other. Her favorite colour is red and I bet the liquid inside is wonderful, as the bottle is! Cocoa, rose, amber, sandalwood, iris – they do sound really nice!
    Thanks!
    Europe

  • Loved Nicoleta review.. Big fan of rose fragrances cardamom, iris, & sandalwood makeup an intriguing mix!! Rose anything florals i love, love, love. Ohio USA & thanks for review & chance to win, good luck everyone!!

  • Firstly, I enjoyed reading about Nicoleta’s catnip for makeup and vividly depicting joy acquiring or using makeup.
Secondly, I loved an illustrative passage about other fragrances that project “makeup scents”. Lipstic Rose by Frederic Malle is my favorite one, but I am eager to try some other ones.
The most enjoyment I got from reading about the history of the house Isabey Paris, I must admit I was unaware of its fragrance. Prends-Moi seems to be a must to try for all fraganistas that enjoy lipstick. 🙂 The flowery concoction with sandalwood and cocoa undertones seems to be also great for the coming autumn months.
Thanks for a wonderful story and an opportunity to participate in a draw.
    I reside in the EU.

  • Great review! I love Nicoleta’s description of how this fragrance and perfumer make a “heavy” note like tuberose “float.” I am desperate to know what this smells like! I can think of a few fragrances that I think do the same. I don’t really have a favorite make-up scent, but would like to have one! Maybe this will be it. Cheers from NC, USA.

  • I love makeup smelling perfumes especially the past year because I didn’t wear much under a mask. My favorite Isabey Paris is Lys Noir.
Juliette has a gun lipstick fever, LArtisan Parfumeur drole de Rose are my go tos
    USA

  • My favourite make up svent is Lipstick Rose. I’m not a make up afficionado on Nicoleta’s scale but i love a great make up scent. And Prends moi by Isabey sounds wonderful!

  • emorandeira says:

In the Nicoletas review I live how she Connect this fragrance with other fragrances with make Up vibe and how she compares the different behaviour of these perfumes. Everything is very Well described and the image It creates on my Ming is great.
Make Up scents are some of my favourites: Dior homme, Gentleman by Givenchy. Uomo by valentino, so Fetch by strangers parfumery, Lipstick rose by frederick Malle, Angels dust by Francesca Bianchi, Lipstick fever by Juliette has a gun… i cannot choose a favourite one because I really LOVE all!!
My name is Edgar (parfum_sindromico) and I am writing from Tenerife, Spain (EU)

  • I absolutely love the look of the bottle. Those notes in the drydown of cocoa, sandalwood and amber sound so beautiful. When it comes to “makeup” notes, I am very fond of the smell of old school Coty finishing powder.

    I live in the USA.

  • Tuberose is one of my favorite, if not my favorite notes in all time. I like it green, I like it carnal, I like it tropical or minty or slightly decayed, it’s a glorious flower that I would pick over any other.
But a makeup-y tuberose I have not yet smelled! This triggers my curiosity very much, because I have to admit I am not a crazy fan of makeup / lipstick-powdery scents, but as I said, I DO adore tuberose. So I wonder how those two would pair up!
Also, Nicoleta describing this fragrance as bringing joy with is “glassy glossy” presence in the beginning and then developing into an intimate and sensual scent sounds extremely promising!
    I am in the EU.
    Many thanks!

  • sephrenia300 says:

Very intriguing review Nicoleta! What sparked my interest the most based on the review is that Prends-Moi is a lipstick inspired scent that is adored by the makeup-loving side of the reviewer. I have been obsessed with makeup, particularly high end makeup, for almost as long as I have been in love with perfume, but have never really thought to combine them in any way. I love scented makeup products, but don’t actively seek them out. But after reading Nicoleta’s review, I am anxious to seek out makeup-scented fragrances!

My favorite “makeup scent” isn’t specifically described as “makeup”-y, but L’Heure Bleue reminds me very much of my beloved Guerlain meteorites powder. I agree with Nicoleta that the Guerlain Meteorites scent doesn’t really deliver on the divine luxury of the powder. L’Heure Bleue, while not smelling exactly the same as the powder, has that same heart of violets. But more importantly, L’Heure Bleue gives me the feel of that “magic hour” hazy reminiscence that is much like the perfectly luminous “filter” that a light dusting of Meteorites powder gives me – washing everything in that perfectly flattering light.

    I live in the US.

  • Claumarchini says:

I had read Nicoleta’s review of Fleur Nocturne (of which I own a sample, and it is a lovely scent indeed) and got really fascinated by the history of the brand. Already hearing that Prends moi’s nose is Luca Maffei would convince me to blind buy! I am always curious about makeup scents but always fear the waxy/plasticky feeling… But this seems like a wonderful fragrance, I am especially intrigued by the use of tuberose since it is so much used in perfumery that it is interesting to experience a contemporary take on it! Greetings from Italy

  • wandering_nose says:

I love lipsticky scents so I was lured into the idea of a super sensual pairing of the main character of tuberose and its love counterpart rose. Thank you Nicoleta, you were definitely the right person to write this review! I have had Lipstick Rose and Lipstick On as my lust objects for quite a while. Have been fighting with myself to resist getting one of them, but now, with Prends Moi it seems there is no way to resist any more. Luca Maffei’s magician skill of making a heavy note float sounds so unique that it adds to the attraction. My favorite make up scent has been Lipstick On so far, but I feel it could be beaten by Prends Moi. I am based in Ireland, EU

“from powdery to creamy and from girly, fruity and sweet to the dark, deep and vampy.”
GOERGEOUS BOTTLE…I know only Lipstick On from Margiela.
I WOULD LOVE, LOVE WIN THIS GORGEOUS Isabey Prends-Moi PERFUME! I live in London, UK.

I’m also a big fan of makeup notes in fragrance. I’m somewhere in the Drole de Rose- Lipstick Rose- Misia camp. Love those powdery swan down puff vibes. I’m in the US.
And ooo, cocoa undertones, very tempting.

  • I love Dior Homme Parfum. It smells like a leather make-up bag. Iris usually gives me lipsticky vibes and I’m curious on how tuberose would smell in a lipsticky fragrance. I’m fascinated by the description of a light and floating tuberose.
    I live in Denmark, EU.

  • The history of names is interesting to me and I enjoy make-up. The classic lipstick smell always reminds me of hanging out with my Mom when she was getting ready to go out. Well, that and Chanel No 5. 🙂 A lot of current lippies have yummy scents. I’d love to have a Prends-Moi bottle. Thanks!
