Fragrances developed by independent perfumers are like a breath of fresh air. Their financial means are less, the distribution isn’t wide but the soul of these innovative creators resonate in their compositions. Isabelle Larignon, just launched her second fragrance after a year of hard work. And even if her mentor is Bertrand Duchaufour, and her talent is just  beginning to be recognized by her peers, nothing is simple when you have to manage your formulas, your choice of raw materials, your suppliers and the shortage of  packaging and bottles on your own.

I discovered Isabelle Larignon’s work via Instagram through mutual friends. Our first meeting, when she launched Le Flocon de Johann K was the beginning of a friendship.  Ever since, we chat about our common passions which are art, music, gastronomy and, of course, perfume. I had the chance to experience Isabelle Larignon Milky Dragon very early on, being part of the perfumer’s  circle of “human mouillettes”. Until  the weeks before the launch Isabelle Larignon hesitated to dilute her fragrance in 13% or 18% alcohol. The nuance was slight but noticeable with others encouraging her to choose the higher concentration for more projection. She finally decided to dilute in 16%… and at the last minute to 15% alcohol. A specific matter to any perfumer, but which weighed when  your name is on the bottle, and financing yourself 100%. Isabelle does everything “in-house” including the design of the label, the 10 ml bottle boxes (cut in a precious Indian paper) with stamping of the serial number and numbering of the first 100 copies. Everything is assembled by hand (and with glue) by the perfumer. Pure craftsmanship!

Isabelle Larignon Milky Dragon finds its source in a fanciful story, this time inspired by Milky Oolong tea and the perfumer’s  imagined “102-year-old dragon, who is a solitary alchemist,” who settled on Formosa Island (the name given to Taiwan by Portuguese sailors in the 16th century) a few steps from a wild tea garden. Every morning, a thick mist of white flowers scent woke him up and capsized his soul. One stormy day, he spread his wings over his precious garden to protect it, then used his hot breath to dry the petals weighed down by the rain: a sweet scent of jasmine and praline rose in the air, intoxicating. In his sleep, the dragon then dreamed of the white flowers transforming into a Serpent Woman, dancing and waving around his protector. This is how a perfume was born “green like a tea plant leaf, flowery like a carpet of violets, warm like the breath of a dragon in love”. The fragrance is well named as Oolong means “black dragon” in Chinese…

On my skin, sweetness is present from the very first seconds. The buttery facet of the Milky Oolong tea that inspired Isabelle Larignon is apparent from the start, round and delicious, energized by the zesty freshness of bergamot, the minty note of buchu and the spicy and powdery aspects of cardamom. This opening takes me back to a dinner where the perfumer offered me an Alishan tea from Taiwan considered the champagne of Oolong teas; I had perceived its originality, its complexity and its roundness while drinking it, at once milky, brioche and praline. Paying homage to this unique tea, Isabelle Larignon Milky Dragon is also flavored with clary sage, playing on herbaceous and amber notes. Second round of sweetness: this time, the lactones and the hazelnut envelop my skin in a regressive roundness, evoking a pot of hot milk boiling. I also perceive floral notes in the background: rose, jasmine and violet gaining momentum over the minutes, soft and almost fruity, floating on this warm milk rich of a thousand scents. Long-lasting but not too heavy, Isabelle Larignon Milky Dragon plays for long hours on the gourmet / aromatic / flowery / fruity contrast, matching the warmth of the skin. Cashmeran, cedar and fir balsam provide a woody base that does not dampen the ardor of the fragrance but on the contrary, gives it body to extend the pleasure until the end of the night.

Isabelle Larignon Milky Dragon diluted in Bison grass vodka

To mark Isabelle Larignon Milky Dragon’s launch, the perfumer has created a 10 ml limited edition version diluted in Bison grass vodka (bottle on the right, where the fragrance is cloudy) – ©Emmanuelle Varron.

A great gastronomy amateur since she managed a restaurant and was a copywriter in this industry for a long time, Isabelle Larignon wanted to adapt her perfume into a delicious cocktail made from bison grass vodka. Also called “flouve” in French, its smell and taste evoke hay, and pairs perfectly with buchu, a South African aromatic plant part of the fragrance. She had the great idea to produce a flanker of her perfume by replacing the classic alcohol with the 40° vodka. It’s of course forbidden to drink, but you then discover Isabelle Larignon Milky Dragon with more herbaceous and nutty notes, like a small olfactory cloud. This unusual version was available exclusively during the launch pop-up organized at Paris Quatre Vingt-Treize shop… and I did not fail to treat myself to one!

Notes: bergamot, buchu, cardamom, butter, rose ketones, cis-jasmone, ionones, lactones, hazelnut, ozonic note, clary sage absolute, cashmeran, Virginia cedarwood, fir balsam, oakmoss.

Disclaimer: A big “merci” to Isabelle Larignon for the 10 ml Milky Dragon bottle provided for this review. The opinions expressed are my own.

  • Yes, I love the neo gourmands exploring other foods and tastes than the usual sweet, chocolatey and vanilla, fruity and nutty. Milky oolong tea is a great inspiration for perfume with so many interesting notes to reflect on. And the presentation of the brand with the numbered and hand packed bottles is really beautiful. Vodka based perfume is priceless!

  • I loved the background story of the 102 year old alchemist dragon (who would have thought) behind Isabelle Larignon Milky Dragon. Nice description of the perfume by Emmanuelle – I am curious how the various notes play out in Isabelle Larignon Milky Dragon. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • Even though she may be an independent perfumer, her tutelage under Bertrand Duchaufour shows she knows exactly what she’s doing. I love the fact that all of her fragrances from the juice itself to the box is all done by her, by hand. You rarely find products like this nowadays. The notes seem like this fragrance will be delightful. Thank you, Isabelle Larignon, for providing a giveaway bottle to experience the fragrance you worked so hard on for the past year.

This sounds intriguing. I like a tea note in fragrances, but this sounds like the tea is surrounded by a bunch of other notes, some floral, some lactonic, some herbal and woody. Emmanuelle makes it sound like it is super well-blended and constructed, so I am eager to try it. I live in the US, in North Carolina.

  • It is so refreshing seeing something different from what one is accostumed to, and this fragrance is surely something that stands out from the ones that the big brands provide. The Oolong tea, the nut, the sweetness, the concept behind the fragrance, everything looks so brilliant. I would love to try it myself.

Intersting choice by replacing the classic alcohol with the 40° vodka in this parfume. It’s of course forbidden to drink…. but it is a wonderful parfumistic cocktail.

  • I love the name, as well as the story and inspiration behind this perfume. Sounds like a very multi faceted one, with of course the lactonic element persisting throughout, but also the oolong, sweetness and mild floral notes. Very exotic!

I so love oolong and fragrances that attempt to capture milky tea. I love the balance here of herbal, edible, woody, and sweet based on how it sounds. I also loved hearing about the Zubrowka “flanker”–that bison grass vodka is my favorite liquor to play around with. I imagine it’s a beautiful base for this! Thanks for the generous draw. • Isabelle Larignon Milky Dragon sounds very interesting. I love the story behind its inception and the fragrance sounds aptly named. I really enjoy milky oolong tea (or any other milk tea), so the creaminess and buttery facet of this fragrance are really appealing to me. I love Emmanuelle’s mentions of gourmet, flowery, fruity, and aromatic facets as they must make for a unique fragrance. The notes of butter, lactones, hazelnut, ozonic notes, and fir balsam are some of my very favorites. Also, after reading about the craftsmanship and originality of Isabelle Larignon’s fragrances, I will absolutely explore her line in greater depth. Thank you, Emmanuelle, for the great review, and thank you to Isabelle Larignon for the giveaway. I would love to own a bottle of Milky Dragon. I am located in the USA.

  • Looove the label (and the name.) I have a few tea scents I enjoy but nothing oolong yet. As a gourmand lover, brioche and prailine sound amazing intertwined with the herbal notes. So cool that it is all done by hand! I am from USA.

  • So mesmerising and mysterious, the trajectory of a mythic chimeric creature of Orient born out camelia sinensis and spreading its swirls of cosmic dust throughout the elements. The dragon’s skin is an olfactory palimpsest; its scales imbued with each and every particle it sailed through and their thousand narratives. I am an enchanted Serpent woman… from EU 😉

  • The rich notes and how unique this fragrance is appeals to me. I live in Poland, EU.

  • Trinity33 says:

The aesthetic and packaging of Isabelle Larignon’s Milky Dragon is just delightful. I love the story of how she came to create this perfume. Creative people can innovate in so many areas. The notes list is somewhat unusual and absolutely intriguing. The milk and tea facets with the spice and sweetness and cashmeran sound comforting. I would love to try this unique composition. MD, USA.

  • What an enchanting story both behind the scenes for the perfume as well as her background and history! I always love hearing about the inspirations and how the perfume is refined through the development process. The review caught my eye with the lactonic qualities and I LOVE a good nuanced oolong tea. The handcrafted everything is also a wonderful touch, I would be so appreciative to be given the chance to give this wonderful sounding perfume a try.

What appeals to me the most in Milky Dragon , is Isabelle Larignon hard work, dedication , and how she’s doing most of the work…by hand !
I believe Milky Dragon is modern, yet classy fragrance based on oolong tea , on top of hazelnut and rose , true state of art perfumery .
    Exciting giveaway, USA

  • I love the story of the dragon I’m the garden- so evocative! I think the idea of a milky tea perfume is what appeals to me most. Thank you for the review, writing from the EU.

  • Wow, what an origin story. Not much more to say about that, it is stunning and creative, and if the scent captures that, well, it will be masterful. In maryland.

  • Nice review Emmanuelle! I’m already fascinated by this scent, as I am a Oolong lover. I was in Taiwan, the year before Covid started and had the chance to visit the fields where the tea grows and I buy different kinds of oolongs teas. Love the smell and the taste. Not being a milk drinker, I find amazing the accord Isabelle Larignon created. It is so interesting the process of an independent perfumer works, in her case, she does all the jobs and the way she decided, after much hesitation a dilution of 15% alcohol. I can relate to the dragon waken up in the mist of a tea field (the mountains are misty by the way) with white flowers. Milky is so important here in the form of the sweetness of the dairy: buttery, briochy…so the scent is soft, fruity, bubbling milky rich of a thousand scents that play longs in our skin. So good and comforting! . I live in Spain, EU

Thank you Emmanuelle for this amazing, descriptive and informative review! There are so many aspects to the story of the perfumer, of the fragrance itself and of the craftsmanship involved! I could not appreciate Isabelle more for doing everything on her own, by the sheer work of her nose and hands. Such a treat. Love the story behind the fragrance, it adds a layer of mystery to the entire concept. Bison grass vodka is part of my heritage so the idea of incorporating it into the limited launch-only-available flanker is beyond mind blowing, hats off to Isabelle! I would so love to have the honor to try the beauty that Milky Dragon surely and undoubtedly is. Thank you from EU

  • I have recently smelled a sample of this beauty and I fell completely in love. Absolute adore Emmanuelle’s review of it. Its green yet creamy, there is a tea smokiness to it yet its not a scent I have smelled before. In loveeeeeee. Would love to win a bottle of Milky Dragon because I have not been so obsessed with a fragrance for quite some time. Brava Isabelle!

A gourmand flowery fragrance from a gastronomy amateur? Sign me in. The Milky Oolong tea which gave her inspiration is what makes me wonder so much about how this fragrance expresses, not only in this words. Thank you for the opportunity! I live in Romania, EU.

  • The story was wonderful! I adore oolong tea, it reminds me of home. The milky laconic note is interesting to me. Based in the UK.

  • Exceptional work ethic by Isabelle Larignon . Creating every part of Milky Dragon alone, from creation of the scent, to all that comes after, the bottles , labels, boxes , you name it, she got it. Of course having such famous perfumer as a mentor, all the efforts, and Emmanuelle Varron excitement, I’m expecting smooth and complex green tea fragrance, with hazelnuts and milky sweetness.
    Thanks for the draw

  • Thanks for this wonderful article Emmanuelle!

This isn’t the first time I hear about a perfumer with a background in gastronomy. The scent of a dish is very important and working with many different spices, herbs and other ingredients, must be an enormous benefit to a career in perfumery.

I have become a huge fan of Indie perfumery where I often smell the more innovative and creative ideas that the larger brands would find to risky to produce.
Milky Dragon sounds incredibly interesting and tasty. Milky fragrances work well for me and I would love to try it!

    Greetings from the UK!

I’m really interested about Emmanuelle’s review of Isabelle Larignon Milky Dragon is learning about the inspiration behind the fragrance Isabelle Larignon Milky Dragon which is Milky Oolong Tea a 102 dragon which is a solitary chemist. I’m also intrigued by the stunning note breakdown and review of the fragrance. I am from the USA.

I enjoyed reading about the craftsmanship of Isabelle Larignon. She seems to be a creative perfumer with an aesthetic and a storytelling ability that I admire. I love the notes in Milky Dragon. I am impressed that there are gourmand, aromatic, fruity, and flowery notes in the fragrance. But the best oolong teas have such notes.

I an fascinated by the story behind the fragrance as well as by the notes present in this composition. I feel it is a very calming meditative gourmand scent which makes you travel dow the milky river and smell all the herbs around. That includes Oolong tea growing on the shore and the branches dipping into the warm river letting it’s scent fill the air mixing with the river and filling the air. I am very intrigued by the Milky dragon as well as the nutty flanker, with both of them sounding delicious. Congratulations to Isabella. Sounds like it will be the one to have in a collection. Greetings from EU/Austria

I think that it’s interesting that Isabelle was a protege of Bertrand Duchaufour and that she does a lot of the work of what an entire fragrance house staff would do. Emmanuelle’s review made this fragrance seem very appealing to me. It seems like Isabelle is very skilled at working with the ingredients and I truly hope to try this fragrance. I live in the U.S.A.

  • I opened this review and was immediately reminded of a High Tea in Edinburgh that served an absolutely exquisite cup of milk oolong. It was so good that I sought out some to enjoy at home, though—of course—it wasn’t exactly the same.

Milky Dragon sounds like a lovely composition. I typically enjoy clary sage in fragrances, and the herbal side of this fragrance sound like a highlight. Also, I’m intrigued to read that it builds on the tea concept with facets beyond sweet gouremond notes; a floral side, bergamot and buchu, and a woody base. I’d love to try this one, knowing it will remind me of a particularly happy vacation and a delicious, aromatic cup.

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

As a small business owner myself, I own my bakery, i can not only relate to Isabelle Larignon , bright future is ahead of her, I’m sure
We both had HUGE superstar mentors in our paths to success , she had on of the best perfumers ever Bertrand Duchaufour, and I had one of the best Pastry Chefs , and Chocolatiers Pierre Hermè . I also know from Emmanuelle Varron Twitter , that at one point of time she was working with/for Pierre Hermé too

“a sweet scent of jasmine and praline rose in the air, intoxicating”

From culinary point of view , and because Emmanuelle was part of team Pierre Hermé, I think a clarification is necessary. The term “praline rose” is really famous in culinary, especially amongst Pastry Chefs, but has nothing to do with both pralines, or rose.
So called pink/red/rose pralines, Lyonnaise candied almonds, is actually type of pink sugar-coated almonds from Lyon France.
They are extremely popular not just in Lyon , but all over France, eaten on their own as a sweet snack ,or used in baking such as the Ubiquitous Tarte aux Pralines , ( pink praline tart) or Brioche aux Pralines (brioche with pralines), as well as different cakes, biscotti, mousses , crushed to smaller pieces, and then sprinkled over ice cream…. and so on. Pastry Chef can’t stay still haha
After reading Emmanuelle Varron take on Milky Dragon, i imagined being in Lyon, making Brioche aux Pralines and later eating them, with Oolong tea.
☆For the culinary record only , bunchu smell is quite complex , and very hard to describe, it’s not just minty. I don’t know how it smells in perfumery, but when you cook with bunchu it’s mix of ripe mango, mint , cassis and eucalyptus. It’s vital part of Korean cuisine .
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign

  • I am really impressed that the perfumer assembles everything by hand. It gives each fragrance bottle a certain preciousness and coolness factor. I also appreciate the different influences contained in this fragrance- cocktail, food, farming, etc.
    Maryland, US.

  • Who said Bison Grass Vodka cocktail with mint? How about Passio-Mint Szarlotka ?
I used to drink vodka in my younger “party all night long” days , and I remember the cocktail well.
I was also under the impression that “Bison grass vodka” is Zubrowka’s trademark name , I don’t think I’ve seen other brands selling their products with “Bison grass vodka” name on the label?
Isabelle Larignon build his own brand well i believe, not relying on heritage, but on her own creativity and vision , and Milky Dragon is a nice example of innovative perfumery , magical green tea creation I’d like to win
    Thank you for the opportunity

I like the creativity and the unique scent profile of Milky Dragon.
Combination of green, herbal and nutty elements with rose, tea and a pinch of sweetness i find overly appealing.
Of course I’d like to say worthy of commendation “I’m owner, perfumer ,I do packaging, bottling, basically everything from A to Z ” . Bertrand Duchaufour may help her in her training, but now she’s doing everything by herself!!!
I also hope Isabelle Larignon won’t sell her brand in the future to one of the billion dollars mega-corporations like a lot of other brands did lately , losing most of their original identity.
All profiles I already follow, @waltherp99bg
