Tama Blough and Buster

Our dear friend and colleague, former Managing Editor Tama Blough passed away earlier this morning of cancer. She died at home with her loving family and cat Buster at her side  without suffering.  We will miss her fragrant awakenings, her thoughtful and insightful perfume reviews,  and the San Francisco Sniffs she hosted. Tama helped build awareness for West Coast and Indie Perfumery by introducing and championing emerging olfactive artists to a wider audience. Her trip to Milan to report on Esxence last March, was the first time she had left the country and meeting the perfumers she had only written about filled her with joy. It was her warm heart, generosity, kindness and talent that I will remember most. Tama was a quiltmaker, a photographer, an artist and a hula dancer. She loved make-up, farmers markets and Benedict Cumberbatch.   Cancer did not win, it never does; it can kill the body but not the spirit. To all her close friends and family, on behalf of ÇaFleureBon we offer our deepest condolences.  Tama lives on forever in our pages and in our hearts.  If I learn of any details about where to send flowers or cards to the family, I will update this post.

Michelyn Camen, Editor in Chief

January 12, 2014 update:  If you want to join some of Tama’s friends in celebrating her life, drop by Tigerlily Perfumery at 973 Valencia Street in San Francisco’s Mission District.

  • Dear Tama ,
Walking at night in Paris, because it was so full of sadness inside.
Our first and only meetings were in Esxence Milano last year, Your heart met mine, our saouls recognized. You loved Paris and France, You dreamed to come, and now Paris miss you…
During the exhibition, You came every days to say to talk about the energies of stones, of perfumes, about dreams, sea, feelings and the lovely Life…
The little stones don’t save lives, but we learn something from us…
Walking at night in Paris, the sky is black, the atmosphere is gray, the moon smile and the stars shine.
The fragrance is that of people who love.
    Love.
    Olivier

  • While I never had the opportunity to meet Tama in person, I could feel her bright and shining spirit in her words and see in beaming out to the world in photos of her. I feel very fortunate to have had at least a small connection to her through the medium of perfume. That same spirit will live on in our collective memories of her and her words.

Sad news indeed. Tama was a star blazer giving the new scent artists a push into a wider world. She was a giving lady in so many ways. Yes, she will be missed and remembered. “Gone but not forgotten.” RIP

  • I knew Tama through two women’s art groups, first Bernal Women Artists Group (BWAG) and then Tangerine Arts. I had purchased two of her large acrylic paintings (“Inside” and “Untitled”), but now I need to find new homes for these wonderful artworks. I’m hoping someone on this site can help. I would love to give them to a friend or family member. Thank you.
