Histoires de Parfums 1876 Mata Hari Review (Sylvie Jourdet) + Dancer, Courtesan, Spy? Draw

Histories de Parfums 1876 review

Histoires de Parfums 1876 Mata Hari photo by Neringa with Mata Hari via History of yesterday

Histoires de Parfums 1876 Mata Hari which first debuted under the creative direction of Gerald Ghislain in 2001, weaves an intimate scent story based on the life of Margaretha Geertruida MacLeod, the Dutch exotic dancer and courtesan who was convicted of being a spy in World War I. Mata Hari  was executed (she refused to be blindfolded) in 1917 -in front of a firing squad. Many believe she was used as a scapegoat by the French and throughout the years film and books memorialize her beauty, charm, and seductive persona. Perfumer Sylvie Jourdet captures the mythic essence of a woman who may have been maligned by history.

Mata Hari what was the truth

Mata Hari, colored photograph, 1899 a femme fatale with courage

To that end, Histories de Parfums1876 Mata Hari is an embodiment of the scent of carnal sensuality and courage. Wearing it is like being swept into her engrossing story, with layers upon layers of intrigue and nuances slowly unfolding on your skin: from the sweet lychee overture and the juicy citric fruitiness, all the way down through the burning avalanche of spices, the capricious rose floral heart and the unrivalled sensuality of the drydown which blooms on the skin; dusty and powdery, arousing and plump. Pitched at exactly the right tonality between lustful and fresh, its’ skin-biting deliciousness is simultaneously heroic and erotic.  Multiple florals dance in sensual slow motion around the centrepiece of the composition – an intoxicating Moldavian rose – ever so gently, ever so hypnotizing: heated, breathy carnation, fragile violet and a touch of aloof, powdery iris; whispering delicate femininity – like a warm, beautiful flesh wrapped in folds of finest silks.

1876 Mata Hari by Histories de Parfums

Histoires de Parfums 1876 Mata Hari with roses and carnations by Neringa

The rose remains the pivotal note throughout the life of fragrance, so honeyed and voluptuous, it’s begging to be made one with the skin, a complete, blissful melding of flower and the body. The drydown is impossibly lavish; decadent with vanilla and sensual musks – a creamy veil underscored by the gentle, milky notes of sandalwood and a whispered lullaby of earthy vetiver. Unctuous like the fragrant lava slowly rolling over hot skin, Histoires de Parfums1876 Mata Hari paints it with bold strokes of rich browns, muted violets, fiery crimson and flicks of white, conjuring up the image of an unmade bed, the flickering glow of lit beeswax candles, and nude lovers locked in a blissful embrace. Histoires de Parfums 1876 Mata Hari is a plush, addictive composition one that wears close to the skin but is unmistakably sexy. An ultimate intoxication of the senses – a blazing kiss of the flower on fire; the sweet, vanilla tongue licking your skin ever so softly — a highly charged olfactive composition, which is as enigmatic as the woman who inspired it.

Notes: Orange, Bergamot, Litchi, Rose , Iris , Violet, Cumin, Cinnamon, Carnation, Sandalwood, Vetiver, Guaiac Wood, White Musk,  Vanilla

  • My wife loves 1876. It probably has little to do with Mata Hari herself, who nowadays seems more like a man’s dream of “the dangerous woman” than a real person.

  • Andrei Artimon says:

Oau this sounds amazing . Very under rated house , they have very good quality . Would love to add this to my collection . New york , usa .

  • Wow! That was such an interesting read, Neringa. It went by too fast. I blinked and it was over. Thanks for telling us the story of Mata Hari. I have heard the name but never knew who it was. Your description of 1876 Mata Hari sounds so decadent and rich. I haven’t tried any Histoires de Parfums yet so I would really love to try this. Thanks for the giveaway. I live in the USA.

  • This notes combination sounds so interesting, all these oriental notes with litchi? I wonder how would that work. I’ve tried a few Histoires de Parfums fragrances, very underrated house, and my absolute favorite is noir patchouli for now. I’d love to try this one. Greeting from France.

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

This rose highlighted so interesting, in a sweet, spicy way, a hot combination worthy of Mata Hari. I want to try this perfume.

  • Bryant Worley says:

Neringa’s review was excellent, really emphasizing how the notes represent Mata Hari, as well as how we might feel once wearing the fragrance.

Out of all that she said, this is what makes 1876 Mata Hari appealing: “Unctuous like the fragrant lava slowly rolling over hot skin, Histoires de Parfums1876 Mata Hari paints it with bold strokes of rich browns, muted violets, fiery crimson and flicks of white, conjuring up the image of an unmade bed, the flickering glow of lit beeswax candles, and nude lovers locked in a blissful embrace.” WHEW!! Still fanning myself.

I don’t have a favorite Histoires de Parfums fragrance, but in my next decant order, I will be ordering 1725 Casanova, Ambre 114, and 1740 Marquis de Sade.

I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • This house makes inteligent and sophisticated perfumes, the idea of a rose melting into your skin, onctuous fragrant lava rolling over is very sexy,Thanks for review and the draw, from Romania with love!

  • Laurentiu says:

The only one I have tried by this house was 1740 Marquis de Sade – which I enjoyed very much! I wonder how 1876 Mata Hari is because it has some really interesting notes. You cannot go wrong with rose, iris, violet, vetiver, sandalwood…
Thank you! I am in Europe.

I am fascinated by the notes especially Rose, Sandalwood and Cumin. A beautiful piece by Neringa I was not aware of the history of Mata hari but an intriguing tale of mystery and courage. My favourite from this house is Patchouli noir. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

I am afraid I was not familiar with Mata Hari. My favourite from this house Ambrarem. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • Andreea Florica says:

She had a life like a movie! I can only imagine all the experience and the thrill she went through, and at the end, to have such courage, to display a great amount of bravery in face of your death! Truly impressing!
If 1876 Mata Hari from Histoires de Parfums captures these exact things I wrote above, then it is a fragrance that I am genuinely interested in.
    Thank you!

  • I’ve had a sample of it for years, I like it very much. Something in it reminds me of Mitsouko. Or maybe the atmosphere it conveys … I love many HDP but my absolute favorite is 1969 🙂

  • Neringa’s review is very good and also an interesting read, both historically and regarding the notes in the scent. Neringa has the ability on showing us how the notes represent Mata Hari ( the embodiment of carnal sensuality and courage) and the way we feel with the scent in our skin (it is a close to the skin one but is unmistakably sexy). The Moldavian rose is the voluptuous star of the scent from top to base notes. I fall in love with Matahari in the form of Greta Garbo in the movies. I really enjoyed 1740 Marquis de Sade . • I know a bit about Mata Hari, but it’s great to know more! Thank you, Neringa, for this wonderful review. Two things in your piece that make me really want to wear this perfume are “the burning avalanche of spices” and “an intoxicating Moldovian rose”. I’d be very happy to receive this fragrance. Thanks for the chance. I live in New York.

  • I forgot to add that my favorite Histoires de Parfums fragrance so far is Ambre 14!

  • kramerongo says:

A Femme 007 at WW1 love that. It most have rose plus vetiver to lure men into her. I know about Mata Hari history and I dont have favorite yet of 1876 fragrance line. I am in Sweden EU

  • My favorite is 1804 which also has rose but 1976 Mata Hari seems much sweeter and I would love it. I never knew she was convicted of being a spy
    Really lovely photos and history
    Thank you USA

  • IvanVelikov says:

1876 is sensual powdery floral i have not smelled before. The drydown of sandalwood, vanilla and musks is even more appealing to me.
I know Histoires de Parfums because of 1725 Casanova , one of the most unusual fragrances I’ve ever smelled. It’s hard to describe , half classic old school aromatic fougere , half gourmand. It’s sweet, but lavender and anise balancing the vanilla, almond and cinnamon well.
Like I said 1725 is my my favorite Histoires de Parfums, 1899 Hemingway is also pretty good
I thought Mata Hari was a fictional movie/book character , and not a real person
Thank you Neringa , and Histories de Parfums
    USA, rarely Paris France

  • wandering_nose says:

What a sensual and alluring story from Neringa! Mata Hari has always been one of the mysterious and utterly fascinating women to me, I have been familiar with her story. No wonder she has been an inspiration for perfumers just like she was for writers and filmmakers. I have been increasingly drawn to spicy rose perfumes so this rendition of rose, melding together with the wearer’s body and surrounded by the aura of sensual woods sounds out of this world amazing! My favorite Histoires de Parfums fragrances so far have been Noir Patchouli, 1740 Marquis de Sade and 1899 Hemingway. Thank you from Ireland, EU

  • wilsonwc76 says:

Wow, this sounds so sexy and sensual! I don’t usually go for scents like this, but I love the Histoires de Parfums house and I’m always interested in what they’re up to. I think my favorite scent of theirs is Purple Haze! I didn’t know the history of Mata Hari, so that was interesting to read, thank you! I’m in NYC.

This sounds right up my alley! I have not tried this house yet. Many thanks for the review and for the giveaway!!

  • Claumarchini says:

Thanks so much Neringa for this interesting review, it went by too fast! The story and aura of mistery surrounding Mata Hari is always fascinating and captivating, and the notes of the perfume sound absolutely amazing to me! I am not familiar with the brand but I have been reading a lot about them and I would absolutely love to possess a full bottle! Greetings from Italy

  • I enjoyed reading Neringa’s review. It is very interesting to read about the history of Mata Hari and the notes in this fragrance. I have heard her name many times, but never looked into her history.

I have been drawn to spicy rose perfumes in the last couple of months and this rendition of a rose, “melding together with the wearer’s body and surrounded by the aura of sensual woods”, sounds amazing!

1740 Marquis de Sade and 1899 Hemingway have been my favourites from the brand, but I have not tried Mata Hari yet.

    Greetings from the UK!

  • Terrianne says:

I had to remove myself to a room where I could absorb this review in private.

My mouth watered. My heart is racing.
    Just gorgeous!
I was familiar with her, but not enough. Thank you for the elucidation.

I have not been so fortunate to whiff something from this house yet.

This one sounds divine. Take me! I’m weak.

    I’m from Boston.

  • Fascinating to learn the story of Mata Hari. The notes sound great and have these vintage vibes, which I adore. I love Tubereuse 3 Animale from HDP, yet I have not tried this one. Greetings from Denmark, EU.

  • Trinity33 says:

Mata Hari has been the face of a slightly dangerous female sensuality for a long time. Histories de Parfums 1876 has all the elements of a heady, carnal fragrance; lots of florals, cumin, woods and musk. I like the addition of carnation for a spicy hit. Favorite Histories de Parfum is 1969. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • I like rose , sandalwood, powdery fragrances and feeling sexy , i have a good feeling about 1876.
Mata Hari I knew nothing about, up until reading the article, thanks for the info.
Received Parfum de Revolte 1969 from my brother two years ago , beautiful peaches and chocolate combination, with patchouli and rum . My favorite Histoires de Parfums
    Thanks again for the draw
USA, and Germany from time to time

  • I don’t know much about Mata Hari, so Neringa’s review of Histoires de Parfums1876 Mata Hari was some introduction, though the review is more about the mysterious and intriguing qualities of the perfume, as is the persona of Mata Hari. From the description and listed notes, it does seem to be a heady, complex perfume. I have not tried this brand, yet. Thanks for the generous draw and review. I am in USA.

  • I had heard of Hata Mari and her untimely end, and I do think that this perfume nicely evokes her spirit and legend. The drydown sounds like the best part to me, but I have to admit the lychee in the top sounds so luscious! I have not tried anything from the house before. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • The article describes this perfume as being impossibly sensual and seductive, yet judging by the notes, it also sounds really classic, wearable and even cheerful. I have discovered a newfound liking for litchi and I love how it adds a burst of juiciness and sparkle to the fragrance it’s used in. Also, the rose is the queen of flowers so I’m happy to smell it anywhere. Lastly, the prominent vanilla drydown really does promise to make this concoction a truly voluptuous one, and that’s always a great experience to smell.
I was familiar with the identity of Mata Hari, but not with her history, and my favorite HdP is Ambre 114.
    I am in the EU.

  • ElenaChiss says:

This mix of rose, vanilla, iris, violet has always been a favourite of mine. Such a feminine and delicate combination! I am eager to try 1876 Mata Hari from Histoires de Parfums now.
Thank you for this interesting reading! I am based in the EU.

  • lilacdays says:

I’ve never tried out his scent from Histoire de parfums. In the past, I’ve worn 1969 from this house which was really wonderful.

I have to say that I pretty much anything honeyed and by reading the lovely description from Neringa it seems that this scent is right up my alley.
My favorite part of this piece is when Neringa compares the perfume notes to colorful paintbrushes.

Many thanks for the draw. I live in France.

  • It’s almost hard to imagine that there’s a real perfume, existing in the present, that smells as good as this sounds. Those notes! All together! I’d read some of the basics of the Mata Hari story before. Haven’t tried many Histoires fragrances, but I love 1969. (USA)

  • I simply love HdP fragrances. the more I try, the more I fall in love. Actually, today I’m wearing 1890, La Dame de Pique, which is a fantastic fragrance. I’m currently in Romania.

  • Neringa’s review of HIstoires de Parfums, Mata Hari was so interesting and educational. The fragrance sounds beautiful and sexy. I love the notes. My favorite fragrance from them is Noir Patchouli. Thank you. USA

  • I knew a little about Mata Hari’s story and this fragrance seems to be quite suitable for this mysterious woman. I love rose fragrance and this one seems to be very sensual and enveloping. So many beautiful notes! I do not have a favorite fragrance from the line, but I would love to explore it more. In the USA.

  • Renate Lindell Riul says:

wow looks amazing . Would love to test this one after falling in love with Mouline rouge . Im late to the Histoire parfume party but would love to explore more. the review about it , being boouth fruity with Litchi, woody and spic and top it up with Rose and violet . ohh yes it sounds divine – Who does not want to feel sensual and courages .
love to read the reviews made with so much pation and feelings .
godd luck to all. from Norway

  • Mata Hari is a fascinating person, not have a favorite Histoires de Parfums fragrance, but I have wanted to try this one since I first heard of it. I am in the US.

  • Fragrant lava rolling on the skin sounds really wonderful. Mata Hari is a great inspiration, her story is so misterious.
    I’m in Slovenia, EU

  • Honeyed roses in an unmade bed, what’s not to like? I love stories of complicated women. Yes, I’ve read some accounts of Mata Hari. My fav Histories de Parfum is Ambre 114. I live in Virginia, USA

  • I knew about her what probably everybody knows – sexy dancer, famous spy. But she probably was different from what we imagine. The notes sound zesty, intimate, voluptuous and strong, and Neringa’s review embodies the soul of the fragrance – a rose begging to be made one with the skin [how poetic].
I don’t have a favorite Histoires de Parfums fragrance, but one can pick a favourite only after getting acquainted with all of them, right? :))
    I live in Europe.

  • I did not know the history of Mata Hari but I am going to read in to it more. I don’t know that a perfume review has ever made me blush until now. The language used was so sensual (honeyed, voluptuous, lavish, decadent) and it sounds like 1876 is not to be missed. I haven’t found my favorite Histoires de Parfums fragrance yet. Most recently I tried 1804 and next I would love to try 1876 ;), Noir Patchouli, Ambre 114, Irreverent. Really, all of them. I live in the Midwestern United States.

  • Wow, what an evocative review! So intimate…I’d love to try this perfume…it sounds very earthy and sexy. I have heard of Mata Hari but did not know the details of her sad ending. Thank you for the chance. I am in the US.

  • Michael Prince says:

What appeals to me about Histoires de Parfums 1876 Mata Hari based on Neringa’s review is learning the story behind the creation of this fragrance. So sad to learn about the story of Mata Hari being an exotic dancer that was accused of espionage and executed. My favorites Histoires de Parfums fragrance is 114. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • Sherin Thomas says:

I love the mouth watering Vanilla note in this perfume. I dont own any from this house. Love to get my nose on to this. Thanks for the opportunity. From PA, USA

  • Wow, I didn’t know about Mata Hari and it’s always saddening to learn of another brave and intriguing woman who paid the ultimate price. This fragrance sounds like it pays proper homage to her memory and would be a great wear for any skin. My favorite from Histoires de Parfums so far is 1828 followed by 1725. I’m in USA

  • The popularity of the house Histoires de Parfums is well know, but to me it’s still an enigma. They have perfumes built on interesting characters, and from all of them, the character behind1876 Mata Hari has for me the most fascinating story. I would really like to smell this, as it looks like something I would enjoy greatly! Thank you for the draw! I am in the EU.

  • Valentina says:

i knew the story of Mata Hari, so controversial. I simply adore 1969!!! I live in EU, Romania

  • Lychee is a wonderful and unusual fruit. I’d love to experience the note in a fragrance. I do enjoy many from this brand. One of my favs is 1740 Marquis de Sade. Thanks for the opportunity! Mich USA

  • mirjamraabis says:

This story and description of the fragrance really speak to me. It feels like I have to try or rather have this… (haven´t so far). I know the story about Mata Hari, but its always interesting to see, if you can find out something new, or just read a well written story about a woman and a fragrance (like this one here). I don´t own anything yet from the Histoires de Parfums.
All the best from Estonia, EU.

  • Belladonna says:

Incredibly generous draw of this gorgeous memorable scent, although I don’t know the history of Mata Hari. I’ve had a chance to enjoy this and Neringa does it justice with “dusty and powdery, arousing and plump. Pitched at exactly the right tonality between lustful and fresh, its’ skin-biting deliciousness is simultaneously heroic and erotic”. My favorite Histoires scent is Moulin Rouge, which is also completely amazing. Thank you again, in the US.

  • I have no experience with Histories de Parfums, except for This is not a Blue Bottle 1.6 , fresh, almost tart summer fragrance.
1876 is sensual floral with woods in the base.
Mata Hary I was not aware of
Thanks to Neringa and Histories de Parfums
    USA

  • I think this one would be great for my special other. Litchi, musk, vanilla, iris, violet, rose… it sounds so delicious that you would want to drink it rather than spray it on yourself!
    Thanks! EU

  • hobgadling says:

The mention of the play between heroic and erotic, lustful and fresh is so vivid and intriguing- great descriptors. I did know about Mata Hari- one of the many Wikipedia holes I’ve fallen down. I love 7733 Unexpected Mona Lisa! Definitely not my usual profile, but something about the fresh and creamy way it radiates is so alluring to me. From Chicago, IL.

  • Uncle1979 says:

1876 i think is nice casual fragrance, with Mata Hari magnetism , and pinch of naughtiness in it.
My favorite Histoires de Parfums is 1969 Revolte , smells like a mix of Cardamom Peach Cobbler, and coffee with dark chocolate in it.
All I know about Mata Hari is known to all , she was a famous stripper , escort and a spy and at one point she was executed.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign
    USA

  • This sounds like an incredibly complex rose fragrance. I like how it is described as “layers and layers” and that is it both lush AND fresh.
I have never smelled any fragrances from this perfume house before. And yes, I did know the history of Mata Hari. I love that this fragrance is named after her!
    I live in the USA.

  • petergigov says:

I knew little to nothing about Mata Hari before reading Neringa contribution.
From 1828 expect complexity, rose and woods in the base , and some kind of surprise, Mata Hari was a spi after all .
Ambre 114 got my attention from Alexandre Helwani picks , (Autumn picks maybe , I can’t remember) classic amber with top performance. To me it’s almost impossible to find a better amber fragrance for $185 , I’m happy with my purchase.
    Exciting giveaway, USA

Thank you for the beautiful review Neringa.

It was really great reading about this fragrance based on a sensual, bold and wonderful lady from the past. I really loved the sensual play of the florals, the bold use spices and the touch of carnation as a hint of historical old school scents.

I have not smelt anything from this brand.

    Cheers from WI, USA

I love this house! I have tried Mata Hari and it is absolutely gorgeous, very seductive, spicy and extremely sensual smell. I would love to have it. Neringa’s review is right on point, very vivid description.

  • DespinaVnt says:

I have come to know much about the actual Mata Hari due to my involvement in an article discussing the real woman vs her film incarnations.
I liked how Neringa unfolds all the sensual layers of this fragrance which I’ve recently tried, and loved.
Another personal HdP favorite is 1899 Hemingway.
Thank you for the lovely prize, best from EU.

  • Bubeto_GG says:

Of course I know Mata Hari , I even watched Mata Hari The Naked Spy documentary on Amazon.
If 1876 is inspired by her , I think if will be multilayered fragrance, both woody , floral , sweet, powdery , slightly carnal too.
Edition Rare Fidelis is without a doubt my favorite Histoires de Parfums , oud, coffee and raspberry, and it’s made by Julien Rasquinet an awesome perfumer. As far as I know Edition Rare is Histories de Parfums upscale line .
I do suggest people, to buy Histoires de Parfums fragrances directly from their website, because of the fantastic promotion there . If you buy the mini 15ml , you can redeem its value, if you decide to buy the bigger bottle. That’s such a great deal.
Back and forth between USA and Scotland, 2 weeks in US -> 2 weeks is Scotland, and so on. Basically both USA and UK at the same time.

  • Histoires de Parfums 1876 Mata Hari sounds like a very ambitious fragrance concept, I’m interested in trying. I like the description of how the rose leads and the dry down is a lavish accompaniment. I knew the basics of the story, but not enough of the specifics. I don’t have a favorite Histoires de Parfums yet. I live in the USA.

  • WaltherP99 says:

For good, or bad my memory is strong, but I haven’t smelled 1876 in years, so I went to my Histoires de Parfums samples , and I sprayed it on skin. The opening, and the drydown are very different. When it settles down 1876 is powdery musky rose, woods , and I’m not sure why I smell a lot of blueberries.
My favorite Histoires de Parfums is Noir Patchouli.
All profiles I already follow, thanks
    USA only, hopefully not long

  • I agree that this has layers upon layers that unfold. I usually avoid rose fragrances but this one really works for me. I enjoy this house in general. Thank you for the review & the draw. I’m in the US.

  • I love anything Rose so this one had my name on it, I tested it years ago and loved it. I ended up buying 1969 instead though There is something vintage and chypreish about it that I simply adore. I reminds me of autumn Thank you for this lovely review !

    I’m in the EU.

  • Julesinrose says:

I certainly have heard of Mata Hari, but admittedly knew nothing of her. Hmmm! This is also a fragrance I’ve always meant to try and don’t know why I haven’t. It sounds like a winner to me. I love close-to-skin scents, especially ones that contains notes that are usually in powerhouse frags and this one certainly fits the bill based on this review. My favorite Histoires de Parfums frag is Marquis de Sade.

  • Julesinrose says:

I forgot to say I’m in Maine, USA (comment one above). Don’t want to miss out on this draw just because of a technicality!!!
