Not I, not any one else can travel that road for you,

You must travel it for yourself. It is not far, it is within reach,

Perhaps you have been on it since you were born and did not know,

Perhaps it is everywhere on water and on land.”-Song of Myself, Walt Whitman

Goldfield and Banks Australia is a niche perfume house that puts a spell on every explorer’s soul. Any good story begins with “once upon a time” and a hero who departs on a thrilling adventure to a land far – far away. The protagonist of our story, Dimitri Weber, having French and Belgian heritage, draws inspiration both from the rigor and tradition of French perfumery and the Belgian “débrouillardise spirit” (roughly translates as “resourcefulness mixed with independent-mindedness”). After studying the Arts, he devoted his life to olfaction, but rather than locking himself up in a laboratory or a marketing board room, he took a path less traveled. After countless collaborations (sales, marketing, training, and product development) with heavyweights of the luxury fragrance industry, his travels took him to a land “far far away” that happened to be the land “down under” and Goldfield and Banks was born – an innovative luxury fragrance brand that is an ode to Australia’s untamed beauty and its indigenous botanical richness. The “Goldfield” of the name comes from the golden fields of sandalwood of Australia and the Banks refers to Sir Joseph Banks: an English botanist and naturalist who was a part of Captain Cook’s party and revealed to the world the first major collection of Australian flora and fauna, describing many species new to science.

“In France, we have roses and jasmine from Grasse but in Australia, we have so much more. For me, it’s all about the ingredients and the art of perfume. I’m not the kind of person that is very much inspired by something (abstract). I’d rather be in the concrete; I’d rather be in something tangible.  My story is about ingredients and craftsmanship.” – Dimitri Weber (read more here)

The native Australian blue cypress conifer tree is surrounded by local folklore, as some version of a fountain of youth with therapeutic benefits ranging from skin moisturizer to anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, to lung treatment to other miscellaneous uses such as adhesive or bug repellent. It’s worth mentioning that it is the only blue-colored essential oil distilled from woods (by steam distillation of the tree’s wood and bark), all other blue-tinted oils being extracted from flowers.

Besides smelling damn good (a mix of woody freshness somewhere between citrus and cedar notes) the indigenous people of Australia placed pieces of blue cypress on hot rocks to create steam – for a healthy respiratory system and for the calming and meditative effect it gave off. (source)

Dragons on the 1265 Psalter world map

Dragons on the 1265 Psalter world map (wikipedia)

“Hic sunt dracones” (Here be dragons) was said to be written on old maps, on unexplored territories, as an echo of the medieval habit of drawing dragons and other mythological creatures on uncharted areas of maps. In our times where, with a single click of the mouse on google maps, you can (virtually) explore every inch and pixel of our planet, the visceral need for the unknown, and the call of adventure is still – more than ever- embedded in our core.

Goldfield & Banks Blue Cypress review

A note from the brand: “A haze of light incense that fuses with the scent of the morning dew evaporating from a deep blue-green forest.” From the first sniff of Goldfield and Banks Blue Cypress, it feels like the first breath of air you take, descending on a new, foreign land when you inhale deeply to take it all in and feel both the peaceful stillness of contemplation and the energizing promises of new adventures to come. The first impression is that of déjà-vu, déjà-felt, déjà-smelled, as the perfume has a classic aromatic Fougere backbone, but soon you’ll realize that it will not take the well-groomed barbershop path you would expect. Goldfield and Banks Blue Cypress keeps playing –  when you think you have it figured out, it loops and you find yourself somewhere completely different on the map than where you thought you were – the middle notes bring forward mineral undertones that recall the smell the sea has when it hits and foams against the rocks of the shore. You could be tricked again to guess the route it would take you on would be on the classic “aquatic” construction, but no, the blue cypress compass points to a new direction again – the forest: dewy, deep, green with camphoraceous undertones of eucalyptus, in a mixture so fresh that you can almost taste the blue.

Still, it never “pulls rabbits out of its hat sprayer”, as the perfume flows flawlessly, made out of a classic, perfectly tailored natural fabric. And now, more than ever, when 2020 rearranges our life and reality as we know it, a taste of good ol’ adventure, even in the form of an olfactive journey is a solid form of self-care and therapy.

Goldfield and Banks Blue Cypress was launched in 2016, and the nose is Francois Merle-Baudoin. All the perfumes in  the brands portfolio have a concentration of + 20% essences and are tested under extreme humid weather conditions.

Clove can be challenging for me, but I would like to try it regardless! I have not tried any others from this house yet. I am from Canada!

  • I haven’t tried Goldfield and Banks fragrances, yet. Come to think of it, haven’t tried any Australian perfumes. Nicoleta’s review of Blue Cypress conjured up the image of being in a calming retreat somewhere, with the smell of incense in morning misty air « A haze of light incense that fuses with the scent of the morning dew evaporating from a deep blue-green forest« . Thanks for the review and the draw. Writing from the USA.

  • I have not tried any of Goldfield and Banks perfumes but I would like to try Blue Cypress. I like the way Nicoleta described the scent of blue cypress, “(a mix of woody freshness somewhere between citrus and cedar notes). This seems like a perfume I would enjoy. I live in the US.

I haven’t sample any of the Goldfield and banks, as of yet, but I must say that Nicoleta tomsa has a way to make me feel again for the land of down under, think about Nicole Kidman, lol, untamed beauty and a Fougere backbone, and to top it off, Francois Merle Beaudoin, also created the Uber fabulous Sahra Oud,!

  • Most of goldfield and bank feel more like designer fragrance to me, since the projection plus the performance is quite average. I do love pacific rock moss because it mass appealing and it fit well with spring all the way to beginning of fall. Blue cypress have an element of that but before it develops it go into barbershop vibe base of the review and it slowly go in to aquatic vibe. Message from US.

  • i visited australia once, and it was wonderfully different from all other places i have visited. i love blue, forests, woody scents, fougeres, and all these notes so it just sounds lovely to me. i haven’t tried any other scent from this house, but they have many that sound yummy. A mineral forward fougere that evokes the sea sounds like a cooling fragrance for hot summer days. I appreciate the focus on indigenous Australian ingredients in the Goldfield and Banks line. I have enjoyed a sample I have of Bohemian Lime, and the element of the local citrus is really compelling, and novel. Same here, with the description of the Cyprus… I’d really love to smell this not unique to Australia. Writing from Pacific Northwest, US.

  • I love a classic fougere, especially one with twists, as the review points out — veering into sea notes and then forest notes. How very intriguing. Now I really want to try it. Based in the US.

  • I’ve been looking high and low for a scent that reminds me of waking up in the forest of mildew, and this review makes it sound very close to it. Would love a chance to partake in the giveaway, from Point Roberts WA.

  • I have actually never tried any Australian fragrances so would love to give Blue Cypress a sniff. The combination of an aromatic Fougere backbone with mineral undertone sounds intriguing. I have heard a lot about Goldfield and Banks’ perfumes but have yet to try this brand as there is no way of sampling here in Boston. I live in the USA.

  • What I enjoyed most about Nicoleta’s review was learning that the fragrance has unique layers too it by saying you think you know where it’s going but it loops around and you find yourself somewhere different. I love those kind of journey’s in fragrances.

I’ve tried southern bloom, desert rose wood and Pacific rock moss by them. They are all beautifully crafted.

  • Jake Dauod says:

I have never tried any fragrance from Goldfield and Banks, but I have always wanted to try one due to their passion for their country. What interests me the most in this fragrance is that Nicoleta said that it was like inhaling air from a foreign land. Whenever I travel I always like to stop for a moment and test my olfactive senses to see if anything peaks my interest. Given my habit, this fragrance really sounds interesting and I would love to try it. Kind regards from Illinois, USA.

  • Sunny Chaudhary says:

I love pacific rock moss the most and it was my introduction to the house.

It’s a unique scent and I love the idea of using local ingredients to make perfumes.

  • William Thomas Smallwood says:

I have not experienced Blue Cypress before in any perfume and I absolutely love it when perfumers rely on native flora. There has to be so much untapped potential in Australia!I have not heard of this house or tried anything from them, but they are certainly now on my radar. Oregon ,US.

  • The first thing that sparked my interest was the description of the scent of blue cypress being woody fresh between citrus and cedar. Also the healing and meditative properties it is believed to have. Then when Nicoleta mentioned the twists and turns Blue Cypress takes it grabbed my interest once again. I’ve not yet tried anything from Goldfield and Banks although there are a number I’ve heard great things about and I’d like to at least sample including this one. Thanks for the generous draw, from the U.S.

  • Laurentiu says:

I love woody fragrances and that seems to be a good part of this adventure in perfumery. The notes in Blue Cypress are ones that I love. Nicoleta’s words resonated with me, ” And now, more than ever, when 2020 rearranges our life and reality as we know it, a taste of good ol’ adventure, even in the form of an olfactive journey is a solid form of self-care and therapy.” Yes, indeed. Thank you to Nicoleta for a splendid review and many thanks to Goldfield and Banks for their most generous draw. I’m in the USA

Blue Cypress smells so soothing and calm and unfortunately, I don’t see it used in perfumery very often. I’ve never had the pleasure of visiting Australia and I own a couple of perfumes from an incredible niche Australian Perfume House TRNP. Thanks for this draw. I live in France.

I am not familiar with Goldfield and Banks perfumes but I like fougeres, and I like when perfumes are not linear, but transform and change direction; blue cypress seems to be one of these perfumes. Thank you for the draw. Europe.

  • The fact that it seems to be a Fougere, but it actually is not, and it takes a turn every time you think you nailed this fragrance makes me curious about it. I live in the EU and never tried any of Goldfield and Banks’ perfumes so far.

  • This perfume sound’s so intriguing!

  • The incense and fougere vibe in this sound really nice, and I’ve tried Pasific Rock Moss which I really enjoy.

  • You know how I love my greenies, and cypress is just one of those deep musty notes that totally adds a foggy quality to a perfume. Almost like the evening and above-ground correlate to vetiver. The morning dew imagery was spot on. But it’s the fougere qualities that spark my interest most – especially with the addition of clove. Definitely need to create a short for perfume deja-vu. Deja Fume? LOL USA

  • Blue cypress sounds so exotic to me here in the middle of the USA. Everything about this review makes this appealing to me. I have never tried any Goldfield and Banks’ perfumes.

    Thanks Nicoleta!

  • “Hic sunt dracones”! Because I didn’t have the chance to smell anything from this perfume house…so for me is uncharted territory, but I am willing to fight de dracones 🙂
    I live in EU

  • Nicoleta’s review is awesome, as always :).
But this time, I have to admit I clicked at Dmitri’s statement – he says he is not very much inspired by the abstract, his story being about the ingredients and about craftmanship – I so much agree with him, no otherworldly story [cough, concept] can make a fragrance outstanding, like talent, ingredients and yep, craftmanship do.
I’m living in Europe and have not yet had the chance to test a Goldfield and Banks’ perfume, unfortunately. So many perfumes, so little money :))

Nicoleta’s description of blue cypress and all of its uses and associations got my interest. I like any fragrance that gives a strong sense of place. Her description of the unpredictability of the scent was tantalizing. I would love to experience it. I am in the US, in North Carolina.

  • I’m really interested in this House. At the moment I’ve only smelled and was able to get Pacific Rock Moss. A Great scent. I’d love to try out their other offerings as well. Blue Cypress sounds like a nice Fougere. Thanks for the draw, Ca

Thank you for the review Nicolata. I think the most fascinating aspect of this review is the companies focus on highlighting natural ingredients from Australia. Also, it was interesting to read ” all perfumes tested under extreme humid weather conditions.’

I love the connection of this perfume to a journey into unexplored terriotry where at some point you leave the familiar on a leap of faith.

I have smelt the G&B Pacific Rock Moss.

Commenting from Orlando, Fl.

  • I have heard of Goldfield and Banks previously, but I never looked further into the brand. While I love fresh aquatics, I have been trying to explore more oriental, vanilla-based, and balsamic fragrances. This review really makes me want to try Goldfield and Banks fragrances now. I love the inspiration behind the brand, especially that it draws from nature’s beauty. I also found it refreshing that the review framed the discussion around the idea of exploration. Again, would love to try this! From USA.

  • Another great review from Nicoleta, i enjoyed it a lot, especially the way she describes this fragrance, painting with words some really nice pictures for everybody’s imagination. Already tried one of their best seller Pacific Rock Moss and even if it smells good, the performance was disappointing on my skin. Blue Chypress sounds way better after reading the review and the notes list, i would love to try it. Thanks for the chance, i’m in the EU.

  • Interesting to read about the fragrances being tested for extreme humid weather. I think this is a first for any house out there. I think they all perform really, really well in any kind of summer weather, whether it is in the northen emisphere or in the southern emisphere and you travel from one to another – and that makes these fragrances being very versatile and perfect all year round.

Like most my first touch with Goldfield & Banks fragrances was with the famous Pacific Rock Moss , their most famous fragrance. I don’t find it masculine, but leaning more feminine instead.
It’s fun and happy hot weather fragrance, Blue Cypress is the winter counterpart of it , like walking on a beach mid November.
Out of curiosity bought the discovery set for £30 while in Scotland, not sure how much it costs in US.I strongly recommend getting it directly from Goldfield and Banks website, and not from online boutiques. When you get it from GB website you get coupon code for £30 , for the future purchase of 100ml bottle. Pretty sure Goldfield and Banks run the same discovery set promo for the US market.
No doubt Dessert Rosewood is my favorite . It’s deep, rich, full and balsamic. Not only smells great, but it’s the most powerful Goldfield and Banks fragrance. It’s a loud one , no doubt about it.
Usually back and forth between USA and Scotland, and I hope really soon I’ll be able to return to my usual routine.
    Cheers from VA

The fragrance being described as not going down the path you’d expect it to go and doing the same when you think you have it figured out is what intrigues me the most in Nicoleta’s review. It seems as though this fragrance takes you through a very unexpected olfactive journey as you wear it for the first time and I would love to experience this! (UK)

  • I like how this fragrance has a fougere imprint yet smells like the sea. A nice blend of earth and marine that was beautifully described here. I am not familiar with this line but would love to try this scent. In the USA.

  • I loved learning that blue cypress is indigenous to Australia and all of the beneficial properties that it has attributed to it. I live in the US and have not yet had the opportunity to smell any fragrances from the house but would love to experience it one day. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • ScentitarFragrance says:

what interested me funny enough was the potential health benefits of that blue Cyprus. Cypress, like juniper, is a clean and calming smell that works for me ! campharous undertones of eucalyptus sounds fascinating to a niche fragrance lover like myself too ! I live in ms, USA and have only tried pacific rock moss

  • I know we’re in mid 2020 , but being a Master barber for a long period of time, I’m used to relate similar to Blue Cypress fragrances mostly to men. Each to his own I guess. I’ll gladly wear it all year round.
Pacific Rock Moss i received for my last birthday , and i’m loving it. Half of it is already empty.
Thanks to Nicoleta for her review , and also Goldfield and Banks for the giveaway.USA based

  • Nicoleta’s description caught my attention. Would love to try a woody fougere! Have never smelled any Goldfield and banks fragrances. From the USA.

  • I have enjoyed a sample I have of Bohemian Lime, and the element of the local citrus is really compelling, and novel. Same here, with the description of the Cyprus… I’d really love to smell this not unique to Australia. Writing from Iowa, US.

  • Hadley Farlow says:

Nicoleta had me at aquatic, This sounds so pleasant and chill! I would love to get my hands on this fragrance, it sound soo amazing! I live in USA, Iowa.

The “breath of fresh air” description sounds amazing right now with a broken air conditioner!
This is peaking my interest for sure – limes without the corona lol – I have never tried Goldfield and banks here in the US but I love My RM Williams boots so I trust the Aussies with just about anything

I love the idea of an incense and mineral fragrance. I like that Goldfield and Banks uses native plants in their fragrances. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! USA

  • Baxter Bartlett says:

Love Pacific Rock Moss & Bohemian Lime is one of my favorite releases of 2020. Haven’t tried Blue Cypress, but it sounds like another fantastic frag.

I love a classic fougere, especially one with twists, as the review points out — veering into sea notes and then forest notes. How very intriguing. Now I really want to try it. Based in the US.

  • Mark Reagan says:

I’ve been looking high and low for a scent that reminds me of waking up in the forest of mildew, and this review makes it sound very close to it. Would love a chance to partake in the giveaway, from USA.

  • Bayntun Beavers says:

I have actually never tried any Australian fragrances so would love to give Blue Cypress a sniff. The combination of an aromatic Fougere backbone with mineral undertone sounds intriguing. I have heard a lot about Goldfield and Banks’ perfumes but have yet to try this brand as there is no way of sampling here in Fort Dodge. I live in the USA.

  • David Cooper says:

What I enjoyed most about Nicoleta’s review was learning that the fragrance has unique layers too it by saying you think you know where it’s going but it loops around and you find yourself somewhere different. I love those kind of journey’s in fragrances.

I’ve tried southern bloom, desert rose wood and Pacific rock moss by them. They are all beautifully crafted.

Kind regards from USA.

I love pacific rock moss the most and it was my introduction to the house.

It’s a unique scent and I love the idea of using local ingredients to make perfumes.

Nicoleta’s review of Blue Cypress conjured up the image of being in a calming retreat somewhere, with the smell of incense in morning misty air.

I want to try this fragrance and I am in The USA

I have not experienced Blue Cypress before in any perfume and I absolutely love it when perfumers rely on native flora. There has to be so much untapped potential in Australia!I have not heard of this house or tried anything from them, but they are certainly now on my radar.

The first thing that sparked my interest was the description of the scent of blue cypress being woody fresh between citrus and cedar.

  • congressman says:

I’m a fougere lover and I adore this kind of combination like Nicoleta describes, like a deja -vu felling when we try this aromas. I never tested any Goldfield and Banks perfume but I like to….Kindly regards from USA.

  • kenton edwards says:

I love woody fragrances and that seems to be a good part of this adventure in perfumery. The notes in Blue Cypress are ones that I love. Nicoleta’s words resonated with me, ” And now, more than ever, when 2020 rearranges our life and reality as we know it, a taste of good ol’ adventure, even in the form of an olfactive journey is a solid form of self-care and therapy.” Yes, indeed. Thank you to Nicoleta for a splendid review and many thanks to Goldfield and Banks for their most generous draw. I’m in the USA

Haven’t tried any of the Goldfield and Banks, but I have been hearing a lot about them in recent days. This sounds like a great release. Love the fougere elements and overall i like the different notes and the description A haze of light incense that fuses with the scent of the morning dew evaporating from a deep blue-green forest. Living in the USA

Goldfield and Banks Blue Cypress was launched in 2016, and the nose is Francois Merle-Baudoin. All the perfumes in the brands portfolio have a concentration of + 20% essences and are tested under extreme humid weather conditions.

Notes: Blue Cypress Australia, Lavender Bulgaria, Patchouli Indonesia, Clove Indonesia, Star Anise India. I am intrigued by the notes and the attention to detail and the distillation process. A house that I am not familiar with but I am intrigued by nonetheless. Thanks a million from the USA

  • alvin jones says:

“Goldfield” of the name comes from the golden fields of sandalwood of Australia and the Banks refers to Sir Joseph Banks: an English botanist and naturalist who was a part of Captain Cook’s party and revealed to the world the first major collection of Australian flora and fauna, describing many species new to science. Intrigued by the concept behind this house and intrigued by the notes especially patchouli being my favourite note. I have not tried anything by this house. Thanks a lot from the USA

Lovely review of the fragrance,i was mesmerized by the portrayal of the fragrance through the words and i really enjoy cypress as a note,it would make me very happy to try it.Iam from Greece

  • “A haze of light incense that fuses with the scent of the morning dew evaporating from a deep blue-green forest.” – this was a very inspiring descriptive bit. The moment when you “inhale” a place, a time or a situation and the smell remains associated to it forever. The notes sound very evocative and powerful in a natural, authentic way. I would love to try this as my first Goldfield and Banks experience. I am in the EU.

  • d3m0lici0n says:

This one looks awesome, a fougere than morphs into an aquatic , green undertones of eucalyptus? Yes please! It looks like a excellent idea to get a different direction at the end when you think you have figured out the perfume.
I’d love to win this one!
    I live in the US

Nicoleta, great review of Goldfield and Banks Blue Cypress. What sparks my interest is that it’s a fougere like fragrance with a modern touch and twist to it adding aquatic and woody/earthy notes to make it sound very appealing. I have tried Pacific Rock Moss from Goldfield and Banks which I love. I am from the USA.

  • I love the idea of an wood-incense perfume. I have the same opinion that sometimes a scent can be self-care and therapy, so I would like to try this one. I didn’t get to try any Goldfiels and Banks perfume til now.

Blue Cypress i would not categorize as “classic aromatic Fougere backbone” fragrance, we all have different perception of course. What i get from it is predominantly cypress , patchouli and star anise, salty marine nuances are present too , but not too much. To me it’s a pleasant casual fragrance.
My favorite Goldfield and Banks is Southern Bloom. It is unique , but proper testing is a must. It’s chameleon type of fragrance-changes a lot depending of the weather , humidity …. Also if it’s rainy and hot at the same time i get strong red wine smell from it. Do not blind-buy it , but sample first.I personally love it , but some may not. Thanks

Not only tried, but i own Goldfield and Banks fragrance called Desert Rosewood, best of the bunch i smelled prior the C…
    Exciting giveaway, USA

  • Southern Bloom review on Cafleurebon was so nice, I was like “Ok it’s time to pull the trigger for the Goldfield and Banks sample set”. LuckyScent sells it for $42+$4 shipping. Not a bad deal, you get 7 samples, all 2ml.
Blue Cypress smelles like Dafnoudi beach in Kefalonia, Greece. Remote lagoon with pure crystal clean turquoise sea water, surrounded by cypress trees and white rocks. Magnificent place I’ll never forget.
I’m torn between Desert Rosewood and Southern Bloom for a favorite one

Great review by Nicoleta! I loved that the Blue Cypress tree was used by the indigenous as a respiratory treatment. I also thought while reading this that imagined being at a medi-spa in a remote area and this is what it would smell like. My favorite part was: ““A haze of light incense that fuses with the scent of the morning dew evaporating from a deep blue-green forest.” This sounds amazing and relaxing at the same time. Unfortunately, I haven’t tried anything from this brand. Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!

Thank you, everyone, for your nice words – this was a joy to wear and write about!

  • I bought goldfield and banks velvet splendor when I read about it on Cafleurbon. It is my favorite mimosa perfume and I wore it all spring. Now for summer I would love to try blue cypress and beat the heat and quarantine and go on an adventure.
