Folie a Plusieurs For Electra (Mark Buxton) 2020 + The Perfumed Soundtrack of a Bitter Goodbye Draw

Folie a Plusieurs For Electra review

Still from Folie a Plusieurs For Electra promotional video

In a red haze somewhere between waking and somnolence, she dreams, eyes open, as a flame dances. Bathed in warm darkness, her lips part. A fragrance walks alongside her, seeping through the dark hair that falls across her face, wrapping her in serpentine tendrils of wild greenery and drifting rose petals. Her tongue tastes purple fruit, then bitterness. She is Electra. There is pain in her desire, in love that will abandon her at the moment of surrender.

Berlin-and Paris-based house Folie a Plusieurs, a self-described olfactive art gallery, integrates fragrance with creative forms including cinema, art, music and literature. For Electra is based on a project between the brand, perfumer Mark Buxton and electronic band Pierce With Arrow that creates a “sonic narrative” using scent and music to portray an oblique tale of love, rejection, loss and melancholy.

Founder and creative director Kaya Sorhaindo describes the relationship of scent and audio as “invisible mediums that are both activated and animated through the body. The body gives these invisible vibrations physicality, movement, matter and meaning. To be able to inhabit the emotional landscape of a musical composition by way of smell is already a beautiful thing, but for a person to consciously revisit and implement the feelings conveyed in the music in their daily lives by wearing a fragrance brings an extend life to the music.”

The brilliant Mark Buxton’s perfume emerges in parallel to the music, tracing the movements of Folie a Plusieurs For Electra’s broken tale. The soundtrack’s beginning is trancelike; a woman’s voice, echoing and distant, speaking over swirling, elusive electronic strings, like water eddying in a shallow pool at a shore’s end you cannot reach. In concert, the fragrance opens in a strange twilight garden where growing things are recognizable but muted; grapefruit, tamed of its tangy effervescence; basil, its anisic leafiness cooled; woodsy green clary sage fading in an out with the sway and dip of the music. As the music intensifies, so does the perfume. Its notes twirl about each other in skewed loveliness, merging and separating repeatedly.

As the music intensifies and a heartbeat of percussion begins to pound, animal notes of furry musk and sweat hurry forward. But then, a shift in the music. Her voice has stopped; a sense of urgency, bleats like distant sirens whizzing past, then a patter like running, running, running. Pepper, echoed by spicy geranium, punctuates the air. Cassis and herbs soar. Then everything quiets. The sun gazes through haze and the music becomes diffuse. A rose emerges and opens in slow but steady motion, a heart offering itself without pause. There is the sweet resin of amber, the oily green of vetiver. All is silken, rapturous. This is passion.

And then, the withdrawal. A metallic note materializes, bringing a sense of detachment. It becomes stronger as the music buzzes and threatens to shrill. This is loss. Moss, earth, the aromas of the places in the shroud of the forest where things go to hide and sleep, come forward. The music is fading, beating like a heart moving away. Incense rises in incantation. The perfume is downy now, nestled in musk. This is the darkness. But immortelle, the everlasting flower, lingers finally, its presence reminding that love has no end.

Putting the track back to start, listen again, breathe again, and for a short time, become Electra, that princess of tears and rage. The music and its fragrance convey you once more to this place of unsettling beauty, and you are lost to it.

Notes: Everlasting flower absolute, basil, cassis, clary sage, pink grapefruit, galbanum, geranium, incense, patchouli, black pepper, rose oil, amber, vetiver, soft animalic accord, moss, cashmere wood.

  • I live in the US, I found this appealing about Folie a Plusieurs For Electra based on Lauryn’s review; ” In concert, the fragrance opens in a strange twilight garden where growing things are recognizable but muted; grapefruit, tamed of its tangy effervescence; basil, its anisic leafiness cooled; woodsy green clary sage fading in an out with the sway and dip of the music. As the music intensifies, so does the perfume. Its notes twirl about each other in skewed loveliness, merging and separating repeatedly.”

  • Fantastic – I loved the artistry of this review. My favorite line – “A metallic note materializes, bringing a sense of detachment. It becomes stronger as the music buzzes and threatens to shrill”. Metallic notes DO have this effect! I am from Canada!

  • Buxton is an impressive perfumer and For Electra seems like a transparent creation with classic vibes that is a versatile year-round wear. USA

  • The transformation of intensity from pounding percussion to quietness is beautifully described. I loved it and it makes me very curious about this fragrance. I live in the EU.

  • Love Folie a Plusieurs! Can’t want to try this. The rapturous tango between sound and scent is captured beautifully in Lauryn’s review. I imagine Electra is like sleepwalking into an unknown garden of familiar fresh green notes, not realizing I’m stepping on thorns. This is cruelty. But the shock soon turned to warmth with amber, vetiver, and incense like I’m caressing the earth. This is tenderness. Like another song, love is a danger of a different kind. To take you away and leave you far behind. With Electra, I feel like I’d be left floating stargazing in a pond with immortelle which for me has a dry bittersweet note. This is longing. A hunger for more. (Brooklyn, NY)

  • Interesting concept. I know that Mister Buxton goes for the artistic, very, uber niche-like aproach in his creations. I have not tested anything from him, but this one would be a great starting point.

    EU. Thanks!

  • Very interesting parallel between music and fragrance in Lauryn’s review. It was very interesting following the journey from top notes do dry down. Also amazing bottle! I’m from Illinois, US.

  • I’m a fan of Mark Buxton’s fragrances! I like the way Lauryn describes how For Electra transitions from a twilight garden within a forest into darkness. On my wishlist it goes! Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! Mich USA

  • Music and fragrances, two of my loves, very interesting to meet both of them here, walking hand in hand. Basil, black pepper, amber ❤ And the bottle is gorgeous. I’m from Romania.

  • With Mark Buxton’s creativity and with interesting notes like Basil, Clary Sage, Pepper, a Metallic note and Moss, For Electra sounds fascinating.
The imagery of Lauryn’s article makes this creation all the more mysterious- I would love to try it.

  • This fragrance sounds like a multi-sensory experience. I always appreciate a visual and aural context in which to experience scent. The notes list is well balanced and I would love to snell everlasting flower absolute. This is the first I’ve heard of Folie a Plusieurs. Commenting from the US.

Notes: Everlasting flower absolute, basil, cassis, clary sage, pink grapefruit, galbanum, geranium, incense, patchouli, black pepper, rose oil, amber, vetiver, soft animalic accord, moss, cashmere wood. I am intrigued by the the notes especially patchouli, rose and incense. An intriguing and interesting concet by this house I am curious to say the least. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

I love everything about this review. Very expressive & alluring. Would be honored to sample this beauty. Good luck from Boston, Ma!

  • Folie a Plusieurs For Electra is described musically which is most interesting to me as I am involved in the world of music. It makes sense when I think about it. Thanks for a fascinating review and thanks to Kaya for making this draw possible. I’m in the uSA

  • I really liked the description of the aroma, its gradual disclosure in accordance with the flow of music. I watched many films and tried many Folie a Plusieurs fragrances and in each of them Mark Buxton was masterly able to convey the moment in an olfactory form. What refers to the description of For Electra by Lauryn, I more than clearly imagined the smell of this perfume, the combination of notes (which sound so appealing to me) and the description of the music. In my opinion, this is exactly what perfumery should be – an organic continuation of art (films, music). Because perfumery is an art! Thank you, Lauryn for the opportunity to participate in the competition.

  • I love how it is linked to music! As a music lover, I can almost visualize the perfume. Hope I get to try it out and experience its beauty.

  • What I find most interesting is the connection to music and just like fragrance has so many subjective elements, so does music so I’d love to try this and have the journey of my own in connecting it to a piece of music that I know and love.

I love how complex and offbeat Lauryn made this sound, as well as the connection to music. “Unsettling beauty” is a favorite descriptor. The mix of fruits, florals, green/herbals, and soft animal accord sounds perfect to me. Plus I appreciate the proceeds going to folks in the trans community. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • “The music and its fragrance convey you once more to this place of unsettling beauty, and you are lost to it.” – reading this in Lauryn’s review of For Electra made me realize how, not just music, but even words on a page can do the same. Lauryn’s review conveyed me to “this place of unsettling beauty” and I was lost to it. Will be interesting to try For Electra with the music, and evoke the emotions that go with both. Thanks for the review and the draw. Writing from the USA.

There are so many amazing layers of artistry added to this creation by entwining the fragrant notes with musical ones. Truly amazing concept, kudos to the authors. Lauryn’s review made me want to embark on a journey through this challenging but irresistible combination of notes. I am in the EU

  • Lauryn’s review makes this sound non-linear to the extreme: she vividly describes the progression of the fragrance. Although she imagines the fragrance as worn by a woman, the notes and description make it sound unisex. I associate Mark Buxton with complex fragrances, and this seems to fit expectations. I live in the US, in North Carolina.

  • Great review !
    Thank you for this experience!
Love the combination between music and fragrance. For Electra seems to be an intense and passionate perfume.
    I live in Europe.

  • Hello, please enter me in Your giveaway. I live in the USA (Florida). What I love about this fragrance is the pepper note mixed with the rose. I have always loved that combination, as I think the two compliment each other very well. All the other added notes this fragrance lists are a very welcome bonus (incense, patchouli, vetiver, moss, wood, etc), and I think from the description that makes this a very well rounded and sexy and sensual scent. I’d love the opportunity to win this! I know I will love it! Thanks so much for the opportunity!

  • Thank you for the draw.
I’m very interested all things around Mark Buxton and his innovative creations. It’s art and “Mainstream”.
Would love to win this new one.

    Lovely greetings

  • the fragrance seems interestingly unique although i dont enjoy the metalicness in a scent i would give this a try.

  • I loved reading Lauryn’s words about Electra! It is so interesting reading about the notes of music and the notes of the fragrance. So creative. I also think the fragrance notes seem so amazing too. So nice that a percentage of the proceeds being donated to Women in Colombia. California USA

  • The tie between music and fragrance is very appealing as I love both. The journey in the review going from top to bottom was amazing and I could read this over and over again. USA

  • Thank you Lauryn, this review is quite interesting and evoked graphic memories even without the assistance of the images 🙂 Folie a Plusieurs For Electra sounds like it covers most of the phases of being in love 🙂 I’m in USA

  • I love the paralels between scent and music overlaid over the classic narrative about Electra. Great! And a gorgeous bottle.
    I’m in EU, Slovenia

  • What appeals to me the most is the bottle design. It commands attention and is quite abstract but in an appealing way. I liked reading about the notes in the fragrance as well. Kind regards from Illinois, USA

  • I love perfumes and music so of course this review was cool. I love the notes of this perfume.Seems very high end niche.Love that!I live in Italy

  • This sounds like a very interesting eclectic project, and while I did not understand Electra’s role in this story (could she be linked to the historical – mythological figure or is just a name coincidence?), I was intrigued about her tormented persona. The perfume itself sounds beautiful, with a very ample and daring evolution and with plenty of tempting notes. I love myself some immortelle, galbanum, amber and definitely sweaty musk. I live in the EU, thanks for the article!

  • I loved how Lauryn’s review took me through a whole scented journey from the beginning to the end of the lifetime of the fragrance – it illustrates the ability for olfaction to tell a story! At the same time, the review was detailed and descriptive, without losing its poetic beauty. I live in the UK!

  • The bottle is like a modern art that I don’t quite inderstand, and it seems that this fragrance is similar, i don’t quite get it, but it extremely fascinating to discover a virgin land. Great review, so passionate! Poland, EU

  • Love this libretto of the opening, drama and drydown, love the look of the bottle and very interesting that there will be soundtrack aswell. I see many favorite notes: immortelle, geranium, patchouli, black pepper… overall perfumes with red vibes and dramatic character are my favorites, so I feel I will like this one a lot aswell.
Thanks for an amazing draw, I live in the EU!

  • I love the connection to music Lauryn made. This mix of fruits add floral sound great, but the dry down of moss and immortelle combined with a soft animal accord sounds like my perfect scent. Thanks for the draw!

I would like to thank you as well for supporting the trans community.

  • What a colorful description of this fragrance comparing it to music. The last line of the review really caught my attention – But immortelle, the everlasting flower, lingers finally, its presence reminding that love has no end.

I also really like that the percentage of the proceeds from sales will be donated to Colombia’s Indigenous Trans Embera women, who have been working collectively to establish a safe and sustainable new indigenous trans community.

  • So wonderful, colorful review! Bravo Lauryn!!
Reading this review, especially about base it seems to me that it is dark, gothic music – earth, moss, woods, Incense, musk.
I want to test this misterious beauty.

Beautiful appreciation of the relationship that music, scents and feelings have.
They immediately generate memories and sensations.
Very attractive and mysterious the description and what each component of the perfume transmits, and to the places where it transports you.
The color of the bottle also has a strong relationship to the story.
    I love ..

  • I enjoyed the “musical” description of this fragrance and I am intrigued by the combination of floral, spicy, and animalic notes. And what a beautiful bottle design. I am in the USA.

  • Such a beautiful parallel 9f perfume phases with music !!! Well done!

The combination of sound & smell is nearly better than images to take you places & put you in certain moods. I’d love to smell & wear sound to see what the experience is like, I’ve definitely felt sound after years of djing. Also anything that supports the Trans community is amazing. This is a beautiful review. It feels like the progression of the track & the scent are flowing as one.

Lauryn, this was an amazing review of Folie a Plusieurs For Electra. This fragrance has an amazing and purposeful backstory. Mark Buxton and electronic band Pierce With Arrow that creates a “sonic narrative” using scent and music to portray an oblique tale of love, rejection, loss and melancholy. I also love how Founder and creative director Kaya Sorhaindo describes the relationship of scent and audio as “invisible mediums that are both activated and animated through the body. • Thanks for the draw. I live in the EU. I Think I will love Folie a Plusieurs! Can’t want to try this

  • I think that the idea of mixing fragrance with cinema and music and the arts is such an interesting concept . Having For Electra be influenced by music is an idea I have never heard of and I hope to be able to try it for myself.
    I live in the US.

  • Fantastic review. I’m a little artist doing photography. For an artist it’s perfect. Interesting notes.
    EU. Thank you!

  • The musical interpretation of this fragrance definitely makes me curious to experience it for myself to see if my senses align. I live in the USA.

  • That’s an interesting concept to tie the fragrance to the musical single! Of course the perfume develops over hours, and I don’t know how long the track is, but to use both fragrance and music that way to portray “love and loss”, seems like a very inspired project. My favorite part would probably be the base note with immortelle lingering through to the end. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Excellent review by Lauryn and I hung onto every word! I always enjoy reading about the parallels of.music and fragrance. For Electra sounds captivating and like it will put you in a trance. My favorite part was the end “Putting the track back to start, listen again, breathe again, and for a short time, become Electra, that princess of tears and rage. The music and its fragrance convey you once more to this place of unsettling beauty, and you are lost to it.” Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!

  • I love the imagery in this one, the review reads like a dreamlike short-story, beautiful post.

I’d love to try this one.
    Kind regards from Germany

  • This was a very creative review of a very interesting fragrance. I enjoyed how the author created imagery of a dance between the fragrance and the music. The notes listed are some of my favorites and I am very interested to try the perfume to see how the green, herbal and aromatic notes interplay with the patchouli, pepper, amber, vetiver and musk. Oh, and the bottle is lovely. I live part of each year in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, USA.
