Best Winter Fragrances 2020

Winter 2020 is the winter of our discontent and disconnect. Many of us are back in lockdown and cannot leave our homes unless it’s for essentials. In our lives perfume is essential. We find comfort this Winter 2020 in our favorite fragrances. Some of us chose scents that seem suited for chilly weather while others of us chose perfumes that are symbols of better seasons ahead.

Rogue Perfumery Derviche (Manuel Cross): Imagine a great tented room on a chilly night at one of those 1930s Hollywood parties you’ve heard about: coloured glass lanterns glow with resinous perfumed oils as scarlet-lipped, satin-clad women draw on hookah pipes while the men murmur quiet invitations upstairs. Derviche, from Rogue Perfumery’ ever-talented Manuel Cross, is a glamourous, deliciously naughty tobacco scent. A brilliant sparkle of bergamot ignites the opening, and then fades as tobacco and incense curl around each other in a deliberate tango. Sexy hits of animalic labdanum and leather mingle with the guests, smoke swirls underneath the chandeliers, and, from behind the odd closed door, there’s a telling trail of civet and musk. Just the perfume to wear when Charles Boyer suggests a trip to the Casbah. Notes: Bergamot, labdanum, vanilla, antique jasmine, olibanum resin, sandalwood, musk, tobacco leaf, leather, saffron, civet.-Lauryn Beer, Editor

DSHPerfume Une Robe de Zibeline (Dawn Spencer-Hurwitz): This winter of confinement, isolation and often melancholy, I more than ever welcome touches of veritable glamour in my life. Apart from watching the impossibly elegant screen icons of the classic films I so much love, I need a fragrance to carry me to times when people would infallibly dress up for dinner, when perfumes primarily aimed to seduce; times when Perfume Houses proposed scents that would ideally be worn with precious furs. DSH Une Robe de Zibeline is a rétro-nouveau gem that can stand next to the most sumptuous “parfums fourrure” of the past, elevating any contemporary faux fur coat to sublimity. Scintillating aldehydes introduce a classically opulent bouquet: velvety ylang-ylang, piquant carnation, hypnotic jasmine and sensual rose, embellished with soft leather, sweet tobacco and buttery orris, crowned by a cornucopia of spices, resins and balms. All that, and a spectacular – cruelty-free – animalic base, whose roaring beauty summons up memories of vintage perfumery at its best. Notes: Aldehydes, Bergamot, Black Pepper, Lemon, Spices; Ylang-Ylang, Bulgarian Rose, Carnation, Jasmine Grandiflorum, Orris, Tobacco, Coumarin, Sable Fur Accord; Ambergris, Brown Oakmoss, Castoreum, Civet, Patchouli, Benzoin, Labdanum, Tolu Balsam, Leather  – Despina Veneti, Senior Editor.

And so, it ends.

Winter 2020 has developed and engorged like an alien concept, taking over smell and taste and touch and synapses, until the very fabric of time warped and the days started agglutinating. It’s thus hard, from whence I look, to know its winter and to feel like a fresh start is around the corner. I have nothing left to sprout; I am spent, and in need of deep wellness. Maison Sybarite 720 is like a warm stone to my aches, like silence to my loud turmoils, like unconditional patience to my undeserving rushness. Water-based and calming to the touch, it’s a comfort to the nose and a most welcome break from all the assaults on the senses, creamy and nurturing, of perfect temperature, and gentle like a loving hand on a sleeping forehead. Olivier Durbano Pink Quartz: Winter 2020 has never been so anticipated, for it means this annus horribilis is finally almost over. Horror is a feeling of repulsion for the senses, and nothing better than this covers what everybody experienced, or better couldn’t experience in 2020 limiting physical experiences and personal relations above all, making everybody struggle to stay alive but also to live our life. Coming from this gloom nothing feels more soothing and resilient than wearing Olivier Durbano Pink Quartz. The vibrancy of Damask rose and Durbano signature olibanum resonate so high in this Pierre Poème you can’t help but feeling love surrounding you, promising new possibilities and fresh starts ahead. Its spicy chypre harmony also reflects the shining stone with the crispness of ginger and citrus radiating its gentle light all around, spreading compassion towards ourselves and towards others, which is definitely what we all need as a gift for the upcoming year. Olivier Durbano Pink Quartz wears over time like a warm blanket lingering in jammy rose absolute and buttery, roasted benzoin, like a sheltering potion keeping away the storm and reconnecting with our tenderness and humanity. I am especially enjoying it in troubled nights. Notes: bergamot, pink grapefruit, Somalia oliban, saffron, ginger, palmarosa, Damascus rose, Indian rosewood, Indian rose absolute, ambergris, patchouli, myrrh, benzoin, white musksErmano Picco, Editor

Desert Rouge for American Perfumer*(Maria McElroy): The snow whirls like a dervish outside my door, hypnotic and dream-filled. Likewise, in perfumer Maria McElroy’s Manhattan at this very moment, a tiny tranquil space in which we have shared tea and treats, warmth and conversation in cheerier times. Maria spent lockdown days completing Desert Rouge for American Perfumer in this environment, inspired by memories associated with Morocco: her first journey there, accompanied by Paul Bowles’ The Sheltering Sky (“How fragile are we under the sheltering sky.”) – and the Greek pastries which festooned the family’s tablecloth –  honeyed, spiced, they later echoed the Moroccan pastries with which she became familiar (Maria and her beloved brother have spent a great deal of time together in Morocco over the years). Love is embodied by her Arabian rose accord, fulsome and decadent in its lushness; sandalwood serves to ground the restless soul, sweetened with the resinous addition of Siam wood (aka pemou) and its balsamic tones crowned with fruit. Maria likens the tender spicing she employs to “the amorous blood of life”: Moroccan-sourced vanilla, nutmeg, star anise, clove, cinnamon – while further volupté is provided by a subtle touch of honey and tobacco. Under the flaming Saharan sunset lie warming hues writ large.-Ida Meister, Senior Editor

“in the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer. and that makes me happy. for it says that no matter how hard the world pushes against me, within me, there’s something stronger – something better, pushing right back.” A.Camus

Amidst the 2020 winter gloom, with cold rains instead of snow, kindergarten zoom lesson overlapping google meets populated with grownup frowns, the ever too familiar walls closing in on us; and drawing near, the everpresent and evergrowing tight knot of fears and anger – this winter I needed a thick slice of light and the promise of an “invincible summer” to hold on to. I have reached for, time and time again, for the quiet calm and wise serenity of Tsarina from Ormonde Jayne – like a stern, firm, and reassuring embrace that I needed (almost every day).  Vierges et Toreros, Etat Libre d’Orange (Antoine Lie and Antoine Maisondieu): I have always been in love with tuberose. It’s my “signature note”, that I even wear as a tattoo. And I love it in all seasons. But when the temperatures drop, tuberose has no choice but to deal with my best armor against the cold: leather. I’m lucky enough to have some vintage items that I have owned for many years, and that I wear as often as possible in winter time. I just love the look… and the smell of it! Anyway, the match between leather and tuberose was always imposed by this meeting between perfume and clothing. Because yes, I have always sprayed tuberose on my leather jackets! And it’s a pure delight to put your nose into your collar, or onto your sleeves. Luckily, Etat Libre d’Orange has bottled this superb, passionate accord which switches endlessly between femininity and virility, aptly baptizing it “Vierges et Toreros” (Virgins and Toreros). It is arguably one of the brand’s most sensual creations. A true winter scent telling a story that takes place… in the Andalusian summer, in an arena crushed by the heat. You immediately smell the tuberose-leather accord, enhanced with spices. A rather very animal leather, almost dirty, battling against (or with?) the tuberose virginal whiteness. Even if it’s softened by ylang-ylang and adorned with a vetiver note that calms the beast, it is a rather provocative fragrance that warms the body and the mind. A perfect partner for winter 2020. Notes: Bergamot, pepper, cardamom, ylang-ylang, tuberose, leather, patchouli and vetiver Emmanuelle Varron, Contributor

Winter 2020 In San Francisco

Winter in San Francisco by Dalya

Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side: The thrill of a not-actually-that-cold California winter delights me every year. After a too-hot summer of fearsome wildfires and hushed speculation of when it might rain, autumn is a literal breath of fresh air. As winter approaches, the temperature drops into the 60s for quieter days of mists and early darkness. I find myself reaching for those boozy patchoulis, spicy musks, and resinous incenses that wilt in the summer heat but bloom in the relative cold. This winter, it’s the warm, seductive vanilla of Francesca Bianchi’s The Dark Side that has me swooning. It’s deeply musky from the first moment, but then a shimmery, spicy, honeyed vanilla starts to fizz at the edges. As resin notes waft up and around, Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side snaps into a warm, languorous, furry, musky spiciness that fills my nose and calms my soul during the stress of winter 2020. Notes: honey, spices, iris, violet, sandalwood, cedarwood, vetiver, amber, styrax, incense, patchouli, vanilla. Dalya Azaria, Contributor

Ineke Evening Edged in Gold: December 21, 2020 is the Winter Solstice and it will be one we will not forget. The two largest planets in our solar system, Jupiter and Saturn, will align auspiciously above Earth.  Sometimes called the “Star of Bethlehem”, it has not been seen in the evening sky for 800 years. What better fragrance to wear this winter 2020 than the intoxicating plush, lush floral by Ineke Ruhland, Evening Edged in Gold. This summer was the first time I smelt Angel’s trumpet flowers in nature while I was on an evening run, and Ineke’s night blooming beauty is so close as to be hyper-realistic. Angel’s trumpet has a heady sweet scent and the flower itself points up, as if greeting the stars. Midnight candy grows in the gardens in my neighborhood, little clusters of white flowers that are aptly named, exuding a honeyed aroma that is a mix of vanilla and macarons. Lest you think it is too sweet, notes of leather, wood and spices create a balance that reminds me of vintage Serge Lutens for Shiseido Feminitie du Bois. A hopeful, gilded perfume,  it is the scent of the trumpet of angels, to uplift us during these bleak times. Notes: Gold Osmanthus, Plum, Angel’s Trumpet, Saffron, Cinnamon Bark, Midnight Candy, Leather, Wood-Michelyn Camen, Editor in Chief

  • I think this a nice selection of fragrances. I am sure that this year marked us in ways we didn’t even imagine exactly one year ago – and the series of unfortunate events made me reach for more cozy perfumes, something that resembles a good ol’ hug.
I’d like to win Etat Libre d’Orange Vierges et Toreros as I am new to both tuberose and leather; Ormonde Jayne Tsarina because I had a chance to sniff it and it gave me major cosy, sweater weather and winter is my favourite season and Francesca Bianchi Under my skin because I love, love, love vanilla and I wear it all year around, even in the scorching beat of summer!
    I live in Romania.

  • pimpompompam says:

The whole list looks and, I bet, smells amazing. We got light, happy, mysterious and serious looking fragrances here. And honestly I would love to have a chance to put my nose on every single one of those fragrances not to mention own it. What I am interested in is: DSH Perfumes Une Robe de Zibeline – it looks so retro and bold it could be James Bond’s weapon.
Pink Quartz by Olivier Durbano – those quarts fragrances are so delicate but i cant resist them.
Ormonde Jayne Tsarina – it looks like a woman I want to become.
Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side thanks to Francesca – my favourite. Thats how I smell when im a witch 🙂 this one is serious one. this how city at night smells.
Ineke Edged in Gold – cuz im obsessed wit the moon. I bet this smells out of this world.

  • What great choices by all of you! I am most attracted to Ineke Evening edged in gold for its Angel trumpet and opulent. Also Etat Libre D’Orange for Tuberose. What can I say I love white flowers. And how can I pass up a great tobacco scent by Rogue Perfumery.or Tsarina
From upstate NY and digging out
PS thanks for letting us know about the star of Bethlehem.. maybe it’s the start of a better year after 2020

  • A few of my favorite winter fragrances are Simone Andreoli Sentosa, Exaltatum Ruby Wood, and SL Daim Blonde.
This is a great selection of winter fragrances and
I would love to win the following:

Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side because it’s a little gothic, yet sweet (I think of honey drizzled on Christmas cookies).

Olivier Durbano Pink Quarz because when I think of this type of stone I think of pretty ice crystals on a glacier.

DSH Une Robe de Zibelline because as a fur-inspired fragrance it makes me think of my grandmother and he fur coat she wore during the winter.

    I am in the USA.

  • I agree that 2020 has been a year of horror and a good way to deal with a year like 2020 is a soothing fragrance like Olivier Durbano Pink Quartz. My choices for this draw are:

    720 by Maison Sybarite
    Ormonde Jayne Tsarina
    Olivier Durbano Pink Quartz
    Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side

    USA

  • Michael Lynady says:

Evening edged in gold really grabbed my attention.
I like the idea of the woods, cinnamon bark and leather balancing the plum and florals.
    Pennsylvania USA

  • I love the way fragrances smell during these cool wintry days and nights. If lucky, I’d choose Vierges et Toreros (animalic unisexy leather), 720 (soothing lavender), Tsarina (uplifting mandarin), The Dark Side (the spice, honey and incense), Pink Quartz (pink grapefruit , rose with myrrh), Une Robe de Zibeline (castoreum, civet, yet cruelty free), Evening Edged in Gold (as a gardener, I love Angel’s Trumpet flowers’ intoxicating scent), Derviche (tobacco note). Thanks for a fabulous list of fragrances! Mich USA

  • We have not begun to process the trauma of this year, but I find it very interesting to read how each contributor chooses a particular style of scent to buoy him or herself. I would love to try Maison Sybarite 720, bc Dana has impeccable taste, or Desert Rouge by Maria bc the spices sound perfectly festive but in a comforting way.

  • Thank you for writing this. I’ve found myself reaching for a lot of luminous scents this winter, to help keep my spirits up; Parfum d’ Empire Le Cri, Amouage Dia, Ormonde Jayne Woman. Alternatively, sometimes I just need something downright warming & comforting. For me, that includes Chantecaille Kalimantan & Carner Barcelona El Born. Of the perfumes chosen by the contributors – and they all sound lovely – the ones that speak to me most are:

Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side – I just got a sample of this in the past week & it’s stunning. At first I was a little overwhelmed by the styrax, but then that gorgeous vanilla comes in, just as Dalya describes. What a sexy scent. I’m sure not focused on everyday troubles anymore!

Olivier Durbano Pink Quartz – I love every note listed & I love a good jammy rose. I pulled out an old sample of Hermetica’s Rosefire recently & was in bliss.

Ormonde Jayne Tsarina – Every perfume I’ve tried from this house pleases me. They smell beautiful & sophisticated and I just feel good wearing them. I would love a “stern, firm and reassuring embrace” from Ormonde Jayne!

Thank you again for the article & the draw. I’m in the US.

  • What a great list. This year demands a cozy, comforting fragrance. Let’s hope 2021 holds better thing.
    I would love to win any of the following;
DSH Une Robe de Zibeline for the nod to vintage perfumes and inclusion of carnation and leather,
ELdO Vierges et Torenos because spending the summer in Andalusia sounds wonderful and tuberose and leather will be there,
OJ Tsarina for its calm and serenity and iris and suede notes, Olivier Durbano Pink Quartz for its warm blanket and jammy rose absolute,
Maison Sybarite 720 for its creamy and nurturing nature and cardamom and lavender,
And Ineke Evening Edged in Gold because it’s a hopeful and gilded perfume to wear during the bleakest times and the osmanthus and angels trumpet.
    Commenting from MD, USA

  • I felt that it was interesting how different types of scents brought comfort to the different authors – it’s thought-provoking how such disparate compositions could bring positivity and cosiness, depending on their preferences and upbringing and culture.

I live in the UK, and would like to win: Francesca Bianchi’s The Dark Side, because honey is one of my favourite notes and makes me feel warm and cosy; Pink Quartz because who wouldn’t smile when smelling an uplifting rose fragrance; and Etat Libre d’Orange’s Vierges et Toreros because suede reminds me of my father, who loves handicrafts and leather-working and is unfortunately half the world away as I am not returning home for Christmas, and tuberose has caught my attention lately.

Thank you for hosting the giveaway!

  • Great list to read. Haven’t smelled a single one personally. Really interested in the Tsarina though. For the draw: Tsarina, Derviche, 720. US

  • “Warm stones to my aches”- I felt Dana there so my first choice is Maison sybarite 720 especially because I am curious about water based perfume. Next would evening edged in gold because I have smelled angel’s trumpet and it is no pun heavenly. As well as the reference to Féminité du Bois. And as a fan of dirty Tuberose the EDLO Vierges et torreros and the Francesca Bianchi the dark side.
    USA

  • During these unsettling times I think we are all inclined to reach for comforting warm cozy scents are what the doctor ordered. If I am lucky to win I would love Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side because of the Arabian feel to this perfume. 100 ml of Etat Libre D’Orange Vierges et Toreros because I am intrigued by leather, tuberose mix, Oliver Durbano Pibk quartz I love rose and myrrh a house that I am not familiar with but intrigued by nonetheless,Tsarina from Ormonde Jayne because of the notes of Coriander, jasmine Sambac, and sandalwood,DSH Perfumes Une Robe de Zibeline because of the spices, rose, Patchouli and animalic notes and because a house that I have got experience with. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • Wonderful selection! We all need healing, comfort, uplifting and hope – beautifully described in these scent selection and the wonderful people behind the articles. I would love to win:
    1. Maison Sybante 720 coz me too believe in the healing power of scents
    2. Ormonde Jayne Tsarina for the invincible summer that we all need to hold on to until this crisis ends
    3. Olivier Durbano Pink Quartz for the desperate need to feel uplifted by this spicy Chypre
    4. Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side because I simply love Dalya Azaria
    5. Ineke Evening Etched in Gold – is there anything more hopeful that trumpets of angels?
    Love from Puyallup, WA USA

  • Oh, so many of these sound so cozy for the winter! The ones that I’m most intrigued by are Pink Quartz by Olivier Durbano because I love a rose scent, and this one sounds very smokey and incense-y, which sounds lovely for a cold winter. I’m also intrigued by Etat Libre D’Orange Vierges et Toreros because it’s a house I love, and the combination of tuberose and leather sounds fascinating, and perfect for the winter. Ineke Edged in Gold also sounds interesting because it sounds like a floral verging on a dessert gourmand, which piques my interest. The Ormonde Jayne Tsarina also sounds lovely right now. It sounds perfectly citrusy and bright and cheerful, which I agree we could all use right now. I’m in NYC.

  • I am very intrigued by all of the Francesca Bianchi line perfumes. I have been reading numerous reviews, also watched a lot of them on youtube. To me this house seems to be like the new cool kid on the block. Independent perfumer, high quality ingredients and lots and lots of praise!
I would love to win The Dark Side. Thank you! I am in Europe.

  • I wear perfumes around the house, while working or doing the chores, and like Nicoleta, I found myself going for the more summery, citrusy, fruity, aquatic, solar scents. Perhaps is the desire of a new beginning when everything will come back to normal? Dreaming of a long, endless holiday with no worries?
Like Nicoleta, I would choose Tsarina from Ormond Jayne – the summer elixir in a bottle.
    EU. Thanks!

  • I love the diversity in scents , you couldn’t go wrong with any of them in this time of year yet to have so many that would work is why I love perfume. The variety of different DNA’s that could cater to any given mood and want is my favourite thing.

    I’d love to win

75 ml of Ineke Edged in Gold
    Ormonde Jayne Tsarina
DSH Perfumes Une Robe de Zibeline

    Florida, USA

  • I just got a sample of Olivier Durbano’s Black Tourmaline. I know, I am very late to the party, but I must say that I love it. I am sure I will enjoy other creations of his as well.
Pink Quartz sounds delicious with the notes of jammy rose, benzoin, safffron, oliban, myrrh and ambergris.
    Greetings from Romania, Europe.

  • Jed Or Alive says:

Definitely a great list! Derviche is one of my current favorites. I’d love to win either The Dark Side, as I’m completely enamored with everything I’ve tried from Ms. Bianchi, or Une Robe de Zibeline, as it has been specifically recommended to me by someone whose opinions I trust. Residing in California, USA

  • Love this list, it makes me look forward to the Christmas Days smelling my best. Even though Christmas this year will be other than all the other years we’ve known, we can hopefully find some solace in the power of perfume.
From this list I would love:
    – Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side
    – Etat Libre D’Orange Vierges et Toreros
Thanks so much, living in the EU

  • Very nice selection and good choices, we could all use a diversion from this bad year. I am most intrigued by these:

Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side, I have a sample of this and enjoy the dark honeyed iris.
Etat Libre D’Orange Vierges et Toreros because I’ve tried it before and was captivated by the cistus note
Ormonde Jayne Tsarina or Olivier Durbano for Pink Quartz by Olivier Durbano, I would give these to my wife.

Thank you! I am in Europe (Finland).

  • All your reviewers seem to have made heartfelt choices; I hope I can get as many of those same feelings as possible from fragrances or otherwise. For my first choice of these scents, I’m leaning towards Derviche– the old Hollywood vice party image gets to me. After that, Vierges Et Toreros (Emmanuelle describes it so sexily), Une Robe de Zibeline (I, too, crave real glamour, especially in these times), and Pink Quartz (sounds incredibly comforting).
    USA

  • During these unsettling and unprecedented times I have been craving my warm and cozy fragrances like Gourmand and Spicy fragrances. If I am lucky to win I would love to win Olivier Durbano Pink quartz because of the Rose, Myrrh and Olibanum notes are my favourite in perfumery, Francesca Bianchi Dark side because of the Patchouli note is just mesmerising, 100 ml of Etat Libre D’Orange Vierges et Toreros sounds like a magical concoction for winter especially the tuberose, leather and Patchouli sound sumptuous. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • The winter season has some wonderful fragrances. I love this perfume list.
I like The Dark Side and Pink Quartz.
I forget the misfortunes when I wear a perfume that I love.
I wish everyone a happy new year.
    THANKS FOR MAKING US DREAM
    Linda, UE

  • amandine_rouge says:

I enjoyed reading the short reviews of the editors’ and contributors’ favourite 2020 Winter fragrances. It seems that the common thread among them is a sense of hope and comfort that fragrance has offered
during these difficult times. I love how diverse the list is.

With the winter holidays another lockdown is upon us in Germany. It seems that each time we thought that we can finally get out, another wave of restrictions and bad news came sweeping. Every time we think it is all over, it has finally stopped, there seem to be infinite more depths underneath us. This year has been hard and heartbreaking and it has pushed me to explore the dark side of myself. I finally had the chance to discover the Francesca Bianchi perfumes in a quaint perfume shop in Berlin and the feeling I had when smelling The Dark Side still haunts me. I have kept the paper strip in the inside pocket of my jacket and I can still smell a faint trace of it now, weeks later. Talk about the depths of the dark side..

I would love to win Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side to continue exploring my dark side. When you cannot get out, why not get in deeper?

    Greeting from Berlin, Germany

  • What a great list. Oh 2020, what a year it has been. Seems like every day there’s more bad news and unexpected events. But we certainly can soothe ourselves with some nice comforting scent. My favorite scent.for this winter is going to be Grand Soir by MFK for that it reminds me of the sweet time gathering with family and friends.
Fragrances I’d love to win :
    Ormonde Jayne Tsarina
Etat Libre D’Orange Vierges et Toreros
    Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side
Thank you for the opportunity of the giveaway, good luck to everyone and hope everyone has a happy holiday and new year.
    I live in France.

  • I thik it is such an interesting selection! I would love to win Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side. I discovered her creations earlier this year and fell in love with 3 of them. The Dark Side is one of those 3, next to Sticky Fingers and Under my Skin. I live in Romania. Thank you for the chance, Happy Holidays!

  • Vanilla is one of my favorite notes in perfumery. The Dark Side seems to have a seductive note of vanilla, gracefully paired with deep musk and sweetened up with honey. Sounds just right up my alley!
I would love to win The Dark Side, but also Tsarina and Pink Quartz look like very nice choices as well.
    Thank you! Europe

  • Lovely choices, everyone! Unfortunately, I don’t know any from this wonderful selection, but after deeper sessions of reviews reading and looking at the overall note composition, I think my favourite would be Tsarina.
Thank you and I wish you happy and peaceful holidays!

  • I enjoyed everyone’s choices and wish I was eligible for Ineke evening edged in gold as trumpet flower smells so beautiful
Tsarina from Ormonde Jayne as well as Etat Libre D ‘Orange Vierges et tororos would be my choices and une robe zebeline

I had the pleasure of sampling 2 of the fragrances mentioned. It has been a rough year for all of us and I sincerely hope that 2021 will be the light at the end of this tunnel. When I think of Winter fragrances one I own comes to mind and that is FM L’eau d’hiver. I love all your choices and would be honored to win any one of the ones you mentioned. The generosity of all involved is amazing. I am in the US.

  • It’s been an odd year with the corona and then some good news too on my family my cousin had a baby. Healthy and getting big. I saw him through zoom though. My choices specifically (because of the fact I already own Evening edged in gold which is as beautiful as described) is Maison Sybarite 720 and also I like Tuberose and leather so EDLO Vierges et toreros. Olivier durbano pink quartz sounds wonderful tooI will look for the Bethlehem star tonight too
    What a generous drawing

  • Thank you for the generous giveaway. I find the categorization of fragrances according to the season very practical, and I am super curious how fragrances that have made to experts’ lists smell. 🙂
Especially, I am intrigued about the following fragrances:
    – Vierges et Toreros by Etat Libre d’Orange. Emmanuelle’s mention of spritzing tuberose on the leather jacket already switched on my memory /fantasy scent in my head. With spices enhanced mixture of »dirty« leather and »floral” tuberose seems a unique concoction. Sensual is also right up my alley.
    – Pink Quartz by Olivier Durbano. I love mentioning the reality of 2020 and drawing parallels to the fragrance, which is the complete opposite of the gloomy year. I really like the analogy of »warm blanket lingering in a yummy rose absolut…«. The list of notes consists of some of my favorites.
    – Tsarina from Ormonde Jayne. I like the short, but the descriptive review by Nicoleta. Fragrance »Tsarina« seems a much needed comforting scent to counterbalance the winter of 2020/2021.
    – Une Robe de Zibeline by DSHPerfume. I agree with the reviewer about welcoming (more?) glamour in our life. I am a lover of classic, timeless chic elevated by modern touches, and fragrance »Une Robe de Zibeline« according to the review seems to fall into this category perfectly.

    I live in Slovenia (EU).
Wishing you a happy holiday season! 🙂

  • This is a great list of fragrances. A few of them I’ve been interested in for some time, but there are also a few I’ve heard about for the first time reading this post. So I’m intrigued to research them more. In case I am picked for the giveaway I would be interested in:
    – Francesca Bianchi – Dark Side (This is a fragrance house I’m highly looking forward to trying out. Everyone is praising her fragrances and they say these fragrances are very very sensual. Dark Said is already on my list to try try from this house.)
    – Ineke – Evening Edged in Gold (Another house I am very intrigued and interested in. I’m very interested in this perfume because of cinnamon and plum. I love those notes.)
    – Maison Sybarite 720 (I have never heard about this hose so I’m very interested in trying out this perfume. Also…cardamom, lavender, cinnamon and tonka – yes please. Also I love this bottle!)
    – Ormonde Jayne – Tsarina (I keep reaching for summer fragrances at least once a week since the cold weather arrived. This one sounds very nice!)
    – Rogue Perfumery – Derviche (I love tobacco scents plus I still haven’t tried any of Rogue’s perfumes eve though I’ve been eyeing them for a while.)
    I’m from Illinois, US.

  • The editors’ picks are always interesting, as they come from educated and knowing individuals. It is a bit sad that almost all are mentioning in one way or another only the nasty side of 2020 – I mean, yeah, it sucked and it will pass it on to 2021, but I’m sure it also had positive aspects – we need more of those, especially now, when the weather is also gloomy.
I’d like to win any of these – Vierges et Toreros [tuberose? did I hear tuberose? :)], The Dark Side [Francesca’s fragrances are such a challenge, but a very appealing one] or Tsarina [since I’ve always been curious to test more from Ormonde Jayne].
    I live in Europe.

  • Most of us are feeling the same sentiments — Let’s get this year over with! The descriptions by all of the editors bring to light the absences from this year, what we’ve all been missing. And they have me craving each of these here at my home in the USA:
Desert Rouge by Maria McElroy for American Perfumer – Morocco is a romantic fantasy of mine. I love that Maria created this during lockdown thinking of that far away place. Rose, sandalwood, spices … a classic, warm, lovely combination.
Ineke Evening Edged in Gold – These are florals I’ve never heard of before. Michelyn’s description of them is lovely and I am dying to try it.
Indigo Perfumery Maison Sybarite – Comfort and calm are what I am craving, and cardamom is the ultimate comfort to me.
Rogue Perfumery Derviche – I would love to feel like I’m at a glamorous scandalous 1930s party. Tobacco and Incense are two of my favorite scents.
Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side – Ah, I love a dark vanilla patchouli scent in winter. Dalya describes this perfectly as warm and seductive.
Ormonde Jayne: Tsarina – That Nicoleta reached for this so often during this year lets me know that it is the “thick slice of light” that I need.
Pink Quartz by Olivier Durbano – Love and compassion, sheltering tenderness. Yes please. With delightful spiritually uplifting notes.
Etat Libre D’Orange Vierges et Toreros – Tuberose and Leather… so sexy.

  • What an interesting selection of Winter fragrances. Like the selections I pick each day, some reflect the darkness of Winter while others the brightness of the hope of Spring. I’d be most interested in Olivier Durbano Pink Quartz to experience the balance of the florals against the spicier notes and warm base; Desert Rouge for American Perfumer as I adore vanilla and am intrigued by the tobacco (big love) and honey in the fragrance; and Tsarina from Ormonde Jayne as I have never tried the brand before and the Summery notes seem like “what’s good for what ails you”. Thank you to everyone involved for this very generous giveaway! As always, I appreciated your descriptions of these fragrances.

  • Ermano’s review of Olivier Durbano’s “Pink Quartz” might be my favourite, just because it was so surprising, I nearly scrolled past, thinking pink quartz wasn’t something that would have ingredients for me, but then I read “olibanum resonate so high in this Pierre Poème you can’t help but feeling love surrounding you”~ hold on!! I’m always, ALWAYS, on the search for perfumes with a strong olibanum / frankincense note. I have an antique wooden treasure box of incenses, resins and many types of frankincense tears, when I open that box oh my, please someone show me how to bottle that magnificent fragrance! Ah, now appears the pink quartz, “…jammy rose absolute and buttery, roasted benzoin. I think I can already smell this. Even if I didn’t win, I would order a sample of this based on this review, thanks for highlighting it!

Despina’s review of DSH’s Une Robe de Zibeline was lovely also, I have a basket of samples I’m waiting to order, after I recoup from seasonal gift buying!! From Axis Mundi to Cathedral… I’ve tried many times to edit my basket but have only managed to narrow it down to 25 samples. Her creations are just to many too varied and too tempting! It does matter to me that ingredients be cruelty-free, so thank you for including that key information. One of my favourite flower scents is carnation, so I’m thrilled to see it listed (OH if only a bottle of Jar Golconda would find its way into my life…) crowned by a cornucopia of spices, resins and balms. Did you say RESINS? Carnation + RESINS?!? SWOON……

Ok last but certainly NOT least, Michelyn, thank you for reviewing Ineke Perfumes! I ADORE JAIPUR CHAI. Sorry, all caps, but dear readers, if you haven’t tried Jaipur Chai and you love a cinnamon note, oh my sweet child get yourself a sample of this beauty, it’s like she went to the land of Herodotus and followed the the ancient stories about the Phoenix birds building their nests with cinnamon bark and brought back the essence of this mythical tale, the old spice roads, traders, milky hot spiced drinks in the cafe shared over stories of life on the trade routes, and wild sights seen… this might be the yummiest most enchanting use of cinnamon in a perfume I have ever smelled. I see Ineke has added the gift of the phoenix to this perfume, Edged in Gold. I am picturing the Phoenix’s nest, the cinnamon bark basketry work now gilt and edged in glittering gold, perhaps an exchange Ineke made with the phoenix in order to procure more of this fine cinnamon for this creation.
    ~ Fragrant Love from Canada

  • Celebrating today the winter solstice we need light and warm and perfumes can easily fill that void.
Thank you for the list, is truly impressive!
I would like to own a DSH Une Robe de Zibeline, because it seems like a cozy sexy powerful scent that dress you up, no matter what you’re wearing. Like Beyonce “baby let me upgrade you..” and since this year I’ve been wearing only (very) casual clothes, Une Robe De Zibeline could do magic for me.
Pink Quartz by Olivier Durbano is love 🙂 I need love and roses and optimism and connection.
I would love to win The Dark Side
Francesca Bianchi. Now I wonder how does my dark side smell like? Does it smell like honey musk vanilla spices patchouli?
    Hugs from Romania

  • This is a great post! I would like to win Tsarina because it seems so intriguing – leather, spices, but also white flowers. I love leather and iris, so it should be a winner for me. I would also like to win Dark Side because I am so much into ambery perfumes right now and this one seems interesting for this category. Derviche by Rogue perfumery seems equally appealing from the point of vue of the notes (vanilla, tobacco, olibanum…). I don’t know any of these three, so they would be able to make my winter 2020/2021 a better, warmer, more pleasant season. I live in Romania, EU.

  • Great article! Personally, and just like for much of the world, 2020 has been a very tough year for me, but there were definitely positives too. I’ve lost loved ones, went through a period of unemployment, and had COVID. Losing my sense of smell and taste during COVID for a few weeks made me appreciate the joy of fragrances even more when I regained my senses. Just like you mentioned in your article, I also found found comfort in fragrances.

I would like to win the following fragrances:
    • DSH Perfumes Une Robe de Zibeline: I’m a massive incense fan, so this sounds like a must try for me!
    • Etat Libre D’Orange Vierges et Toreros: This sounds like some unlike I’ve ever smelled, completely out of the ordinary for me. I love exploring new scents, and would love to do so with this daring fragrance.
    • Ormonde Jayne Tsarina: In full transparency, this is probably out of my budget for the foreseeable future, but I would love to get my nose on a high quality powdery iris scent.
    • Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side: What is not to like about spicy, honeyed vanilla?! If I had to choose the most appealing fragrance from this list, it would be this one.
    • Rogue Perfumery Derviche: Currently my favorite tobacco fragrances are TFTV and Naxos. Out of all my fragrances, my partner appreciates tobacco scents on me the most. I’m keen to explore others, so this would naturally appeal to me.
    • Maison Sybarite 720: I’ve had a sample of Spicy Calabria, and it was absolutely gorgeous. I would really like to try another fragrance from this house.

    Regards from NY, USA.

  • I like the list. Actually never tried any of these fragrances, but familiar with all the brands. Ineke sounds interesting because I love plum and cinnamon and am intrigued by the midnight candy note. I would also like to win Rouge Perfumery Deviche. I adore tobacco and incense. I live in Chicago, IL, USA. Thanks for the reviews.

  • This is a beautiful list of winter fragrances and for us is , also, an amazing letter to Santa Claus filled of great juices!
I would love to win Etat Libre d’Orange “Vierges et Toreros” that atracts me with passion between femininity and virility: as spanish guy who grew up in a culture of Virgenes y Toreros, then moved away from them… is still an hypnotic image.
I also would like to sniff Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side becouse of the spicy, musky vainilla conforting the cold days of winter.
and Finally I´d like to win the Olivier Durbano Pink Quartz , the Damascus Rose, olibanum and benzoim accord would take me from today , the shortest day of the year, to the blooming next spring.
    I live in Spain, UE

  • Bryant Worley says:

This was an excellent Winter lineup! They were all described quite well,, and will all fit the weather that will come during that time. The ones I would like to win are:

    1) Rogue Perfumery Derviche – you had me at “glamourous, deliciously naughty tobacco scent”. And I look forward to the “tango” the tobacco and incense will do, as well as having quite the experience from the trail of civet and musk.

    2) And then there is Dana Sandu’s description of Maison Sybarite 720 as a “warm stone to my aches, like silence to my loud turmoils, like unconditional patience to my undeserving rushness.” And her stating that it was creamy and nurturing makes it sound like the warmest of blankets.

    3) Olivier Durbano Pink Quartz – “wears over time like a warm blanket lingering in jammy rose absolute and buttery, roasted benzoin, like a sheltering potion keeping away the storm and reconnecting with our tenderness and humanity. ” (Just reading the notes, and the phrase “reconnecting with our tenderness and humanity.” was enough for me)

    4) Tsarina from Ormonde Jayne – the idea of an “invincible summer” that would bring about a quiet calm and wise serenity is something to look forward to, and the notes listed fit that idea.

    5) Vierges et Toreros, Etat Libre d’Orange – I like contrasts in fragrances, and this seems to be one – “A rather very animal leather, almost dirty, battling against (or with?) the tuberose virginal whiteness.” And I couldn’t agree more that this would be a perfect partner for winter 2020.

    6) Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side – the notes in this are perfect. And this statement sold it: “It’s deeply musky from the first moment, but then a shimmery, spicy, honeyed vanilla starts to fizz at the edges. As resin notes waft up and around, Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side snaps into a warm, languorous, furry, musky spiciness that fills my nose and calms my soul during the stress of winter 2020.”

I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

Thanks for this generous draw and this wonderful list! I’m familiar with several and think that Une Robe de Zibeline and Tsarina are excellent choices–Zibeline for its plush, cozy, animalic feel, and Tsarina for its cool, chilly, powdery iris. I also love Dark Side! If I were to wine, I’d love Tsarina or Dark Side. I’m in the US.

  • hannahrgeyer says:

This is a fun list – I prefer darker, more wintry scents myself. I’d love to win the following (I am USA based).

    1) DSH Une Robe de Zibeline – During the pandemic, perfume has been the *one* thing I do every day to make myself feel more like myself, since soft pants have been a constant in my life since March! I’d love to glam up my one glam habit these days (maybe I’ll pull one of my vintage furs out of my closet to really dial it up to 11!).

    2) Maison Syberite – Cardamom, lavender, and birch tar? Sounds incredibly calm and peaceful – a perfect accoutrement for my aforementioned soft pants.

    3) Tsarina – A perfume with mandarin, bergamot and freesia doesn’t *shout* winter to me, but I bet that after two months of it, I’ll be YEARNING for some brighter scents. I’m definitely interested in this one as well!

    4) Vierges et Toreros. I find myself alternating between Caron’s Tubereuse and Piguet’s Bandit a lot, so why not just split the difference and get a scent with both tuberose and leather accords? I also own I am Trash from the same house and *love* it – have been interested in trying more from ELO.

  • Claumarchini says:

To be honest, when you review fragrances I just feel the need to try them all! 🙂 But, for this particular draw, based on the notes I prefer and on the fact that I live in Milan, Italy, here are my choices: I simply cannot resist to olibanum, orris, jasmine (sambac too) , ylang ylang and rose (especially Taif and Damascus), so I’d love to win Pink Quartz, Une robe de Zibeline, Vierges et Toreros and Tsarina!

  • Hi, I would like to win the Pink Quartz or the Robe de Zibeline. They both sound gorgeous – both perfect for a cold winter’s night. I live in Western PA, outside of Pittsburgh, and it is freezing here. I am also a big Dawn Spencer Hurwitz fan, she always does such a good job with her fragrances, they are unique and beautiful.

  • Your variety certainly opened my horizons.
Rogue Perfumery Derviche cought my attention immediately as I’m enchanted with anything and everything from the Ottoman era.
I’m in the US. Thank you.

  • Richard Potter says:

All of these are lovely choices. Should I be so fortunate, I wish for Rouge’s Derviche. Thank you for this generous draw. Happy Holidays to all.USA

  • This was such a diverse sampling of fragrances! I would love to try each of them. During this time in history I think we need comfortable scents to calm us down.
Pink Quartz by Olivier Durbano because of the warm pink blanket for winter.
Maison Sybarite 720 for it’s healing notes
Desert Rouge for it’s calming desert sunset notes.
Derviche for a taste of tobacco and more comfort
DSH Perfumes Une Robe de Zibeline because who doesn’t need a fur coat
    Thankyou and I’m from California

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I love these lists because they inevitably end up making my “to try” list bigger. But this was an easy one to choose which I’d like to win because I’m obsessed with Francesca Bianchi’s creations so I would choose The Dark Side. I also really need to get myself a sample of Derviche because it has so many notes I love in one bottle. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Hey there, great article! I always enjoy reading pieces on this site as here you can find descriptions of perfumes that no one else does, very thoughtful, exact yet artistic.
The fragrances that tempted me the most are: Ormonde Jayne Tsarina
I always enjoyed this specific kind of scent, put in a few words the scent of an aristocratic lady, i think the pouderiness plays here as a key ingredient in achieving this kind of sensation which i consider to be extremely sexy. From the notes it seems it commands a certain level, a certain elegance, a certain understanding of your own person, a certain confidence. I can almost see Carmen Dell’Orefice dressed in a gorgeous velvet burgundy gown, sitting on the edge of a piano with a mysterious look in her eyes, holding a cigarette in one hand and in the other a glass of martini, this scent would definitely tie it all together, i’d love to wear such a creation. When you hear its name, it can only make you wonder with your mind in older times, instinctually i immediately let my imagination fly to the Romanov dinasty, to all the opulence and mystery that surrounded them, i wonder if we can go as far as saying that this perfume is but a small reflection of someone from that time and place.

    Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side:
The name enticed me , and as i got a look at the notes my interest grew. Vanilla, spices, styrax, patchouli, for me this seems like a good, no brained , winter vanilla combo.

    Octavian-Bucharest Romania

  • This picks are absolutely Devine. Just lovely Fragrances altogether that are timeless. I love Bergamot, leather, sandlewood, vanilla, woodsy scents, saffron, Jasmine. With these choices I would be grateful for really any of them. If I had to pick one, DSH Une Robe de Zibeline. What a delightful surprise that would be!! I can just imagine the scent

  • Another great selection of Winter fragrances! Personally like Nicoleta I have also been enjoying Ormonde Jayne. They are cosy, warm and evocative and bring some distraction from the “new normal”. Love Ambre Royal, but Tsarina is as stately.
Also would love to try DSH Robe de Zibeline as like Despina I love some retro glamour and can see myself wrapped in a cruelty free sable fur accord this Winter ;).
Also as every beautiful is Francesca Bianchi and I’m happy that Dalya is including her here. Her fragrances have something sensual and warm like wrapping yourself up tight with your loved one on the couch. Beautiful stuff!
My personal Winter favourite this year is Captured by Candlelight from 4160 Tuesdays. For me this sums up British Christmas with a flaming Christmas pudding and mince pies. “Gezelligheid!” As we say in Dutch. Merry Christmas Çafleurebon!

  • vickalicious says:

This is a fantastic post! I love posts like this, and like the gift guides that were recently done–thank you for doing these. I really enjoy seeing “top picks” types of posts and lists, and I love the variety of fragrances discussed.

I’m interested in the following (located in USA):
-Derviche: I’ve been hearing nothing but fantastic reviews of Rogue Perfumery. I’ve not tried anything from Manuel Cross yet, but would love to.
-DSH Une Robe de Zibeline: I was first introduced to DSH from a Cafleurbon giveaway, and I LOVE Dawn’s creations that I’ve tried. The mix of the ylang, aldehydes, tobacco and vintage vibes sound wonderful.
-Desert Rogue: I love the description of this, and the Moroccan inspiration. The spices in the note breakdown have me very intrigued as well!
-Tsarina: I’ve not yet tried anything from Ormond Jayne, and would love to. The notes sound very nice!
    – Vierges et Toreros: I’m a big fan of the ELDO creations in general. The white and yellow flowers, paired with the leather and tobacco have me very interested in this one…along with the unique take that ELDO does!
    – The Dark Side: I’ve heard so much praise about this fragrance! I have only tried Under my Skin, and loved that one. Would love to explore more from Francesca Bianchi.
-Evening Edged in Gold: I’ve never seen a fragrance with a Midnight Candy note! I’ve heard that night phlox has a beautiful fragrance, and would love to experience it in a perfume.

  • Wow, what a list! They all amazing, very rich, complex, mysterious. Just what you need in winter!

Francesca Bianchi the Dark Side sounds most appealing to me, you can’t go wrong in cold weather with musk, spice and vanilla.

I’d love Rogue Derviche too, smoky and animalic is right up my alley!

Maison Sybarite 720 is something I need, something calming to divert away the negative energy of this world.

Olivier Durbano Pink Quartz would also be a lovely addition to my wardrobe, as I need a rose scent like this, it sounds incredibly unique.

Ormonde Jayne Tsarina – “invincible summer”! – what could be more divine. I need it!

  • I always love reading everyone’s best of Winter. Each person’s choice gives a further in-depth secretive awareness of themselves. Wishing you all a Wonderful Yule. My choice should I win would be Edged in Gold.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thank you for the beautifully curated list. I would be honored to win any of these because these are all perfumers I have a strong love for.

Derviche is such a beautiful take on a tobacco fragrance, almost like a tobacco chypre. I also love the packaging and his IFRA defiance.

DSH Perfumes is someone I follow on Instagram and I always watch her lives where she is creating scents. She is such a cool perfumer and I would love to smell one of her creations.

Maison Sybarite 20 sounds fantastic, the way dana descrived it – a warm stone to the face. It has some of my favourite ntes (cardamom, lavender and patchouli) and I would love to snif this one.

Pink Quartz is one that I actually haven’t heard off before. I do like Ermanos description of the jammy rose in it nad my, those supporting resins also sound nice.

I was fortunate to recieve a sample of Desert Rouge and absolutely love it. It puts wanderlust in myh eart.

Ormonde Jayne is a perfumer who I’ve only read about but I’ve never had the chance to smell her fragrance. Tsarina really sounds like a beautiful fragrance, particularly with the way the hedione and the florals.

Etat D’Libre’s Vierges et Toreros has me intrigued by the tuberose-leather accord. I love the idea of the duality between the animalics and the cleanness of the florals.

Frasesca Bianchi’s Dark Side is one that I’m interested to try because of the honey and vanilla combination. I don’t genereally veer towards sweeter scents but this one has my attentiaon.

Ineke is a perfumer who’s work I enjoy. Idyllwyld and Balmy Days and Sundays are some of mycherished samples and i just love the notes in Evening Edged in gold.

    Regards from WI, USA

  • What a great variety of scents in this list. It really got me in the mood to cuddle up in the couch with a blanket, a good book and a cozy perfume. I usually gravitate to cinnamon and vanilla around Christmas. Speaking og Christmas I’d love to win one of the following as a “Christmas present”.

DSH Une Robe de Zibeline – Indie with vintage sensibilities. The civet, ambergris and resins would really warm me in the cold, Scandinavian winter.
ELDO Vierges et Toreros – Two masterful perfumers working together for a boundary-pushing brand offering a leather with florals? Yes please.
Olivier Durbano Pink Quartz – Rose is by far one of my favorite notes. I’m not familiar with this brand yet. The perfume seems to be warm yet radiant.
Ormonde Jayne Tsarina – I’ve never been disappointed by Ormonde Jayne. All their fragrances have been interesting and worthwhile (of those I’ve tried) and their customer service is unmatched. Linda is a champ. I must try this one.
Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side – I haven’t had the fortune of trying her fragrances yet. I’ve only heard wonderful things though. The description of this fragrance resonated with me. 2020 has been tough and this seems like comfort in a bottle.

Thank you for making this list and arranging the giveaway. I’m crossing fingers for a Christmas miracle. I live in Denmark, EU.

  • Each one sounds unique
But I will hope to win the dark side, tsarina, desert rouge, dervishe evening edged in golden and Maison sybarite because I like their notes
    USA

  • I always love reading what personal favorites come up from the Çafleurebon staff! I would choose Ineke Edged in Gold or Maison Sybarite. Edged in Gold was my top choice because of the Angels trumpet. I remember so many nighttime summer walks passing houses with these planted. Its a very addictive smell, and I haven’t seen it in many perfumes. It’s one of those situations where a smell can instantly summon up a vivid memory of a time and place. And the other notes like cinnamon and osmanthus are favorites as well, so I can’t imagine not loving it.
Maison Sybarite was a choice because I often find my tastes aligning with Dana’s reccomendations. In this case, also finding comfort in the smell of Tonka, lavender, spices and grounding woods. If she says it’s like a comforting warm stone, I believe it! I am in the USA

  • Lovely choices, winter angels! A lot I haven’t smelled here as I’m still new on my perfume enthusiast journey but I DO love EldO Vierges et Toreros – I normally prefer it as a summer scent on my skin, but now I must know what it’s like sprayed on my leather jacket! (Although it’s already below 0 where I live so it will just be for my literally closeted enjoyment).

I’m in Canada, and am eligible for:

DSH Robe de Zibeline – this is one I’ve been eyeing on her website for ages! I love repurposed vintage fur and a cruelty free animalic perfume scratches all the same itches!

Pink Quartz by Olivier Durbano – sold at signature olibanum, as that’s an oil I love putting into my bath for a nice relaxing scented ritual.

Ineke Evening Edged in Gold – I first met Angel’s Trumpet flowers in Sydney Australia, and stopped dead for 20 minutes solid just marveling at them! It was a wonderful memory and a highlight of a strange, strange trip, and a perfume that would mirror that feeling right now would be a beautiful encapsulation of 2020. What a strange trip, but we find the beauty where we can.

    Happy holidays to you all!

  • It’s a very nice list of winter fragrances, love to see ELdO’s Vierges et Toreros listed which I like a lot because it’s uniqueness and it’s concept, it is incredibly true to its name and I really love the combination of labdanum + tuberose. ELdO is my favorite niche house, i will wear Rien a lot in this winter.
If I could, I would choose Vierges et Toreros and also Une Robe de Zibelin from DSH, the bottle is beautiful and it’s animalic ambery notes appeals me a lot and hope to be fortunate to wear it. Thank you very much for the opportunity. Happy holidays and my best regards from Mexico.

  • Thanks everybody for sharing your experiences, this year truly was terrifying in many ways and senses. But I feel that after yesterday’s Great Conjunction of Saturn (Wisdom) and Jupiter (Expansion) in Zero degrees of Aquarius a lot will change, we will see.

Wonderful selection from the editors and contributors, I wish I could participate for the US selection too, but as I live in the EU, my choices would be:
    – The Dark Side – Francesca Bianchi, because this one have been on my buy list for the whole year, I really like how it is deep but not heavy, resinous but cooling, thanks to styrax and, as I remember, nice honey and patch combo, really a masterpiece for darker seasons,
    – Pink Quartz by Olivier Durbano, because of course I already know what the vibrancy of Damask rose and Durbano signature olibanum can do to my moods, in spiritual and sensual ways…
    – DSH Perfumes Une Robe de Zibeline, sounds appealing to me, because you are describing it as “a rétro-nouveau gem” with “scintillating aldehydes, velvety ylang-ylang, piquant carnation, hypnotic jasmine and sensual rose, embellished with soft leather, sweet tobacco and buttery orris, crowned by a cornucopia of spices, resins and balms”, mmmmm, interesting.

  • Thank you for this wonderful article and the marvelous perfume prizes!
After reading it, I think I would enjoy very much The Dark Side and/or Tsarina.
    Blessed holidays to everyone!
    Europe

  • I have been introduced to Francesca Bianchi’s creation through an article I read here on this site. Since then, I have been curious about all of her perfumes. I do enjoy a perfumer who is independent and tries to come up with bold and different approaches, not being tied to the general idea that a perfume must be silent, without soul and inexpressive in order to appeal to the masses.

If I were to win, I would definitely love to win The Dark Side. Thank you for this chance! EU

  • I enjoyed all of these excellent pieces all personal yet almost universal as well. All of the perfumes sound wonderful as well. There are 2 id like to win and almost for opposite reasons. Ormonde Jayne Tsarina because “an invincible summer to hold on to” sounds exactly like something I need to lift my spirits. The other is Francesca Bianchi’s The Dark Side because something to warm me up in the cold winter and that “calms my soul in the stress of winter 2020” is also something very much needed. While id appreciate any these 2 are the ones ill put my hat in the ring for. Thanks you for the generous draw as always. And wishing everyone happy holidays and best of luck, from CT USA.

  • I think that the best winter fragrance described above is Tsarina from Ormonde Jayne, as I always imagined the elegance of a Tsarina with winter, fur coats, golden brocade dresses, precious diamonds and a tiara. This fragrance is the definition of a perfect aroma for a lady, a strong, determined, powerful lady, that it is not afraid of speaking her mind and that inspires others to follow her path. I currently live in Romania.

  • Lots of interesting perfumes as the favorite winter selection! I would love to try Pink Quartz as I do not know any from this house, but I have heard only great things about their fragrances.
Thank you for the chance! I am in the EU.

  • I thought the selection of perfumes was interesting and varied as always, but I couldn’t help notice a new element: the need and the appreciation of coziness and reassurance. It doesn’t come as a surprise, given this year, though …
    I would love to win:
    – Vierges et Toreros, because tuberose is one of my favorite notes and it being paired with leather sounds very interesting
    – Tsarina, that I have read excellent things about, confirmed by Nicoleta as being a haven of serenity
    – The Dark Side, which is a superstar of modern perfumery and apparently a delicious concoction that I have unfortunately not gotten to sample yet, or
    – Une Robe de Zibeline to give a touch of glamor to these otherwise quite gloomy and way too “casual” times.
I live in the EU and am very thankful for such a generous draw from these wonderful houses and Cafleurebon.
May we all have a much better new year!

  • What a great list…! I would really love to win Une Robe de Zibeline. I too find myself reaching for my most glamorous scents these days— they remind me of nights to dress up for, filled with beautiful music, good food, good company. Une Robe looks so transportive in that way… doubly so maybe because of the vintage style, which I’ve been trying to smell more of and understand more deeply. I’m in New Hampshire, USA

  • Wow, thank you editors and contributors for curating this wonderful list. These all sound amazing but if I had to pick, my choices would be: –

    1. Ineke Evening Edged in Gold – For the hyper-realistic smell of Angel’s Trumpet and because it also has Saffron notes which I love
    2. Ormonde Jayne Tsarina – For the imagery of a thick slice of light and the promise of an invincible summer that Nicoleta experienced from it
    3. Maison Sybarite 720 – Dana found it creamy and nurturing which is a welcome reprieve in these times we find ourselves in
    4. Olivier Durbano Pink Quartz – For wearing like a soothing, warm blanket which is most welcome especially this gloomy winter – and it also has saffron 🙂

Happy Holidays and may 2021 be way better than 2020 🙂 I’m in USA

  • This is a nice list, many of these perfumes I’ve never heard of, so I love to broaden my horizons.
However, I would love to win Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side. I am very into musks, so I think I would enjoy this perfume. Also, I want to try something from Francesca Bianchi because I hear many good things about her fragrances lately. As Dalya writes, it helps her get through the stress of winter, and I really need a stress antidote this year.
    I am from the EU.

  • Thanks Dalya for reminding me how much I miss a California winter at this point in time. I wasn’t much into fragrance when I lived there, I wonder if my preferences would be different had I stayed. I hope Michlyn got to see the Star of ‘Bethlehem, we were fully cloudy and pouring rain here. Oh Ida, how you made me drool thinking of the Greek cookies my Mom sometimes makes at Christmas time. I may have to have her e mail me the recipe this year. The photo made me longingly think of when I could be that close with someone outside my family without a mask. I’d most like to win Desert Rouge, but honestly I’d be happy with any of them as they all sound amazing!! Thanks for the chance. Happy winter to all. USA.

  • I always enjoy these compilations of great minds. This list is no exception.
While I would be happy with any of these, the Pink Quartz is a longing for me. I got to visit Olivier Durbano in his shop in Grasse about 2 years ago and he is such a beautiful sole, so welcoming and friendly. Seeing his colorful bottles lined up in his ancient shop with stone walls in the historic city of Grasse, they gleamed like little jewels. But it was the crystalline pink one that called out to me, and when I tried the scent it was just alluring to the nose as to the eye. We were traveling light on a month long trip so I didn’t acquire it at that moment, but I’ve always meant to remedy that.

The other perfumes sound beautiful too. Dawn can do no wrong and her “fur” series was excellent. Rogue is a line I’ve only sampled a couple, but I’ve loved it…beautiful retro referenced scents. Lauryn’s descriptions have created so many longings for me, and Derviche is no exception.
Maria McElroy creates some magic scents. Geisha Noir is a dark favorite, so I am always curious to see what she does with a scent challenge, such as this project for American Perfumer. And I have never tried Tsarina but always been curious about it as the notes sound right up my alley.
Thank you for a great read and a fabulous draw. And keep on doing these stories where you pool your editors choices.

  • Hashim Madani says:

Totally agree with Lauryn, Derviche is outstanding and feels like a timeless classic to me.
    Would love to win:
1 – Olivier Durbano Pink Quartz for its jammy rose and buttery benzoin blanket
2 – Ormonde Jayne Tsarina for the reassuring comfort it gave Nicoleta
3 – Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side because I have multiple ‘must buys’ from this house and the spicy, honeyed vanilla in The Dark Side would be a good place to start
4 – Ineke Edged in Gold for the seemingly delightful midnight candy accord
    VA, USA

  • So shame on me for not reading all the rules.. I would love Edged in Gold because I love the thought of the heady Angels Trumpet especially at this time of year. I also would love the Tsarina from OJ because at this moment I could use some serenity and calm as I am sure many of us could.

  • I enjoyed reading the editors’ clever and well justified selection of favorite winter fragrances. My picks, should I win, would be, in this order: The Dark Side by Francesca Bianchi, because a boozy, spicy and resinous fragrance is just what I reach for during cold days, Tsarina by Ormonde Jayne because of the very appealing notes (iris, suede and labdanum are some of my favorites), Pink Quartz by Olivier Durbano, because it sounds like a very generous and positive perfume that exudes good feelings on the wearer, and Vierges et Toreros by Etat Libre d’Orange, because I really appreciate this house and I so far enjoyed everything they have released (albeit not having smelled this specific one so far). I live in Finland, Europe and wish everyone a happy new year!

  • I would love to win Une Robe de Zibeline by DSH because I am turning into a huge fan and I love the sound of a vintage style glamour puss scent. I would also like to try Francesca Bianchi the dark side and I am so intrigued by this Perfumer and this sounds again old school glamour that appeals hugely. I am in U.K.

  • The discontent and the disconnect have been strong this year, but here’s hoping 2021 will be better. Thank you for this wonderful collection of reviews. I’ve wanted to try Francesca’s and Manuel’s creations ever since I’ve read about them here, but alas, neither of them ships to Russia. Still, Derviche and the Dark Side sound thrilling.
Another one I find particularly intriguing is Dawn’s Une Robe de Zibeline: I don’t wear fur, but I love the perfumes of yore that were made for fur coats: Weil and Patou. Besides, I love rich florals blended with resins.

    Happy holidays, everyone! Stay safe!
    Russia

  • Wow – what a selection. Thanks for the generous draw and the wonderful descriptions of these amazing perfumes. I would love to win:

    1. Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side because of the deep muskiness and the vetiver, patchouli, incense, amber, all the earthy notes that make you forget your worries.

    2. Etat Libre d’Orange – just because it seems very cheerful, kind of different from my choice above, but hey yin and yang… why not two opposite desires at the same time

    3. Ormonde Jayne Tsarina just because I have wanted to try this house for a long time given the fantastic reviews it has gotten on Cafleurebon

    4. Olivier Durbano Pink Quartz – spicy Chypre

    5. . Une Robe de Zibeline – because of Despina’s description “a spectacular – cruelty-free – animalic base, whose roaring beauty summons up memories of vintage perfumery at its best.”

Season’s Greetings and A Much Happier 2021 to Everyone. Writing from the USA.

  • I live in MD., U.S.A. I want to win all of these fragrances and I’m eligible to win any of them. I think that it’s interesting that these are Cafleurebon’s favorite 2020 Winter fragrances.
I hope to win DSH Perfumes Une Robe de Zibeline because I’ve certainly heard of this perfumer and I want to try the many fragrances she’s made. I think that it’s interesting that this one is “retro-nouveau”.
I hope to win 100 ml of Etat Libre D’Orange Vierges et Toreros because I want to enjoy the tuberose-leather accord, enhanced with spices.
I hope to win Pink Quartz by Olivier Durbano because this one seems like it might be my favorite out of these. I want to see what the spicy Chypre accord w/: Damask rose, ginger, benzoin, etc. are all like w/ each other.
I hope to win Ormonde Jayne Tsarina because I’ve certainly heard of this fragrance house and this one seems like a fragrance that I can enjoy.
I hope to win Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side because I’ve certainly heard of this fragrance house and this one seems like a fragrance that I can enjoy.
I hope to win 30 ml of Rogue Perfumery Derviche because I can enjoy tobacco and incense fragrances.
I hope to win 75 ml of Maison Sybarite 720 because this one seems like it would be relaxing, and the notes combination sounds good too. This seems like another possible favorite of mine, i.e. from this list.
I hope to win 75 ml of Ineke Evening Edged in Gold because I’ve certainly heard of this fragrance house and this one seems like a fragrance that I can enjoy. This seems like another possible favorite of mine, i.e. from this list.
I hope to win Desert Rouge by Maria McElroy for American Perfumer because it seems like it is high-quality and an enjoyable scent.

  • Fall and Winter fragrances are my favorite. They are the the key to all the cozy and warm feelings I associate with this time of year. Especially living in a warmer area (California), I need to use fragrance to capture a true winter feeling. There were so many interesting ones listed here! The ones that really captured my eye are Maison Sybarite 720, Desert Rouge for American Perfumer, and Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side. The notes in these are all ones I enjoy and/or have been curious about, but combined in ways I haven’t experienced before. Thank you for the opportunity to try some of these out! Hailing from the USA.

  • such lovely reviews, a wonderful draw of cozy and bright winter scents. I”m in the US, and i always appreciate the effort that goes into the reviews and good feeling on this site! thank you again for keeping me company during this year!
    • Tsarina – Ormonde Jayne – in Seattle, the idea of a slice of light just sounds wonderful to have in a bottle during the dull, gray and rainy winter days. As well as the lovely notes…
    • Maison Sybarite 720: you had me at cardamom, as well as the water-based, comforting and nurturing…
    • Vierges et Toreros – tuberose and leather? Bring it on! Emmanuelle’s words just created an image in my mind of nights out with perfume on and a fancy leather coat cuddled up with a warm scarf….and I love spice scents in the winter….
    • The Dark Side – vanilla, musk, honey…with some spices -again, sounds like a wonderful winter scent for me…
    • Pink Quartz – spicy chypre, new possibilities and a fresh start? Yes please! A warm blanket and some jammy rose sounds like just what I need for the dark days of winter.
    • Evening Edged in Gold – what a wonderful description, I would love to get to try this scent.
    • Derviche: Bergamot, tobacco and incense? In a tent? In the cold? Fabulous image, sounds like a lovely scent!
Une Robe de Zibeline – elegant, as I am not, but the classically opulent bouquet sounds just floral, just spicy, and just elegant enough for me

  • Merry Christmas and happy Holidays to the whole Cafleurebon family 🙂
I’m about to share my thoughts on the picks i know:
    1. Rogue Perfumery Derviche , picked by Lauryn Beer
Great tobacco, resins and incense fragrance. I also get honey , and in the base something boozy reminds me of beer .
    2. Olivier Durbano Pink Quartz , picked by Ermano Picco
I do like Olivier Durbano fragrances, and I’m happy to have the best one he has , Black Tourmaline Extrait. The opening and the base of Pink Quartz are exactly how Ermano described it rose, incense and resins. Unfortunately in the drydown something overly green and vegetal comes forward, and clashes with the rose, and the incense in a bad way.
    3. Tsarina by Ormonde Jayne , picked by Nicoleta Tomsa
The opening on my skin is heavy on the jasmine, note I’m really sensitive to. It’s indolic, but thankfully it settles down quickly to a sensual suede floriental.
I know all “The Four Corners of the Earth” fragrances, and to me Tsarina is the most feminine of the four. I like wearing such florientals, and I actually own over 20 bottles marketed for females, but I think most guys won’t be able to pull such fragrance. One more thing, there’s hefty dose of IsoE Super, or one of its derivatives, perfumer is Geza Schoen after all.
    4. Vierges et Toreros by Etat Libre d’Orange , picked by Emmanuelle Varron
Big time NO , I’m sorry. I do understand we are all different , and our tastes too , but to me Vierges et Toreros is both dirty, carnal, indolic and animalic all together.
    5. Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side , picked by Dalya Azaria
To me The Dark Side is the best Francesca Bianchi fragrance. Just like all , but one, Francesca Bianchi fragrances are fun , a bit lustful and sexually oriented. Everyone who knows the brand will tell you the exact same thing. Spicy honey-sweet amber, with smokiness lurking in the background is what i get from it. As usual for all Francesca Bianchi fragrances, performance is great.
I’d like to win one of:
    1. The Dark Side
    2. Derviche Rogue Perfumery
    3. Tsarina
Virginia USA or London UK 97/100 times , we’ll see what will happen with current UK nonsense .

  • This list was amazing!
    – Rogue Perfumery Derviche sounds interesting because of the jasmin and animalic mixture. The description makes me think of a warm throw. I would love to try this as I am a jasmin fan.
    – DSH Une Robe de Zibeline sounds very yesteryear, very calm and collected, and assertive. I’d like to try it to see if it matches my personality.
    – Ormonde Jayne Tsarina is described as such a bright sunray, it intrigues me. I would love to win and see if it will also brighten my days.
    – Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side also has a combination of florals and animalics that interest me quite a lot. I would love to win and smell it because of the muskiness.
I hope I can one of these on the giveaway.
    Location: USA.

  • Andreea Florica says:

What a wonderful selection! If I am amongst the lucky winners, I would choose as a perfumed prize Pink Quartz from Olivier Durbano because I am curious of the Durbano’s signature mix which is a duo of rose and olibanum.
I am in Europe. Thank you for the draw!

  • what a lovely winter-read. makes me want to be somewhere snowy. but i’m in socal — so no snow.

    – Maison Sybarite 720 — sounds like heaven: calm and soothing
    – Ormonde Jayne Tsarina — because it sounds so centering — and, well, it’s OJ 🙂
    – Pink Quartz by Olivier Durbano — another blanketing, comforting scent.

i suppose my nerves are shot — and something steady and calm and soothing is what i need.

    ~harper

  • Danu Seith-Fyr says:

a fabulous selection of what most have described as a comfort and strength in these times.
Vierge et toreros – for its provocative warmth, drawing us through the darker days.
Rose Quartz – always the distillation of a higher love in Oliviers creations crafted through his hands and heart.
The Dark Side – somehow in the dark and stillness of winter, Hope shines.
Tsarina- The unerring constancy of Nobility composed with the elegance of Ormonde Jayne.

Thank you and Merry Christmas and a healthful and peaceful New Year to all of you at Cafleurebon

  • Thanks for great suggestions. Thisbyears overall topic is cosiness and glamour at home. I d love to win DSH Une robe zibeline to bring that all enveloping scent.
Or the Ormonde Jayne Tsarina, to try this scent by one of my favourite brands.

Or Franchesca Bianchi The dark side for the boozy musk.
Or the ELDO Vierge et Torrreros for the unabashed sensuality.
Thanks for the beautiful round up!
    I’m in Eu, Slovenia

  • I’m sure people living in the south of the planet have different opinions, but for me who live in the north hemisphere and just found the world of fragrances again after a long period, I am exited to see how our olfactory senses differ in cooler weather. The selection is quite different from what I’d have imagined, but this is why we like this blog. Thank you for introducing them to us, and I hope every reader could find one that suites their needs.

I would like to win Maison Sybarite 720. I just need that healing power and will surely put it on my list to sample. (US)

  • You can’t go wrong with either of these fragrances! But I think, just by looking at the notes pyramid, that the one I would enjoy the most is The Dark Side by Francesca Bianchi. Patchouli, vanilla, incense, styrax, honey, spices, sandalwood do sound really, really nice!
    EU

  • Happy Holidays guys
My favorite 3 fragrances from Cafleurebon contributor picks are:
    *Derviche Rogue Perfumery
Resinous, delicious tobacco scent, that’s also a bit naughty? Say no more
    *The Dark Side Francesca Bianchi
Seductive vanilla, resins, boozy patch and spices is recipe for success for the gloomy weather outside
    *Tsarina Ormonde Jayne
I feel exactly like Nicoleta lately “ever-growing tight knot of fears and anger” is strangling me. Tsarina should be able to help.
USA , in some rare cases Paris France

  • I enjoyed reading about every one of these beautiful winter scents. While for so many of us 2020 has been the winter of our discontent, fragrance has played an important role in mentally removing us from the confines of our living rooms and taking us on journeys of memory, or to places we wished to travel, or to some other imagined time and place.
All of these sound lovely, but I am especially drawn to “The Dark Side” for its seductive honey and incense notes, and “Evening Edged in Gold” for its macaron-esque note that comes from the midnight candy flower.Thank you so much for this incredibly generous draw, from the US.

  • ScentitarFragrance says:

W-O-W. There are so many reviews, so many new frags, and so many giveaways happening at Ca Fleure Bon right now. It’s a joyous journey of discovery! Anyhow, Annus Horribilis is quite the understatement but brought me a bit of a laugh. I like that this list has a lot of scents based around bringing feelings of comfort, enveloping warmth and calming familiarity. It’s not just a list of the best frags, but a list of the best frags for the time, for the moment, which I really appreciate.
If I had the opportunity to win, I would pick the following:
*Etat Libre d’Orange Vierges et Toreros – I’ve really enjoyed ELDO’s La Fin du Monde and Fat Electrician. My favorite note is vetiver, and I’m always interested in both vetiver and frags that push the limits.
*Pink Quartz by Olivier Durbano – This year I was introduced to some AMAZING rose/oud frags. I had previously dismissed rose as generic and too-floral, and I’ve gained so much appreciation for it. I like finding intriguing combinations in rose. The citrus/resin/musk sounds like a winner to me.
*Ormonde Jayne Tsarina – anything that brings a warm embrace, a pull back to a better time – I’m all about it. I love the combination of bergamot and coriander, and the jasmine and iris sound like a wonderful mix of summer-ish vibes.
*Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side – If I had to pick only one, this would be it. My wife is from San Diego, and we take many trips out there every year. But not this year, obviously. I LOVE patchouli and vetiver on her skin. Dalya’s review took me to comfy nights with my wife in Old Town.
*Rogue Perfumery Derviche – sounds so incredibly lavish and classy. Can’t wait to try it, as these colder nights in the Rockies have me pulling for those boozy/tobacco/vanillic/leather frags. My go to boozy is Fahrenheit Le Parfum, but I’m always looking for something else that hits the same way.
All the frags I read about today sound amazing. Thanks again for all your work putting these together and running such an awesome blog. Cheers. Zachary in USA

Ah what a beautiful selection! I’ll be getting a bottle of Derviche in a a few days along with Flora & Fauna the day after for my birthday 🙂 Derviche is a wonderful choice. Well the whole line up you have selected is excellent, wish I lived in the US so I could be in with a chance for more. but of the ones I’d love DSH Perfumes Une Robe de Zibeline tops the list, I really wan to explore Dawns creations and this sounds amazing! Aldehydes with florals then that furry amber heart. You make it sound divine! I must slip it on to try.

Etat Libre D’Orange’s Vierges et Toreros is another on my list to try, its a harder one for me to find & those tend to be the ones from the house I love the most like their stunning Afternoon of the Faun, I love a good tuberose & with leather it sounds like its ready to rock & roll.

Ormonde Jayne’s Tsarina sounds like a hug & we all need hugs. This year has been a mess & I’ve been wearing cosy perfumes while stuck on zooms too, its odd the desire to present as smelling good even though its via a screen & theres a good chance most are work attire from the waist up, for a while I stop believing in legs. I’m still not sure what a belts function is for any more?

Finally Francesca Bianchi’s The Dark Side this I love, its stunning, Dalya’s review nails it. Such a dark and beautiful patchouli, theres a meditative edge that lurks beneath & some furry fuzzy fun. 2021 is the year I have to explore more female perfumers Francesca Bianchi & Dawn Spencer-Hurwitz are top of that list!

Thank you for all the work & reviews this year, its been one odd year but perfume has saved my sanity & reading the reviews & histories here has been amazing. Thank you all & Merry Christmas!
    I’m in Dublin, Ireland.

  • I am in the US. So far I have only smelled the Dark Side and Pink Quartz of the scents listed, I would love to win the Pink Quartz. This winter I am enjoying DSH Cathedral and Marzipan, as well as Dasein Winter and Papillon Bengal Rouge.

  • I think that the lineup that has been chosen for the winter season is great, personally the ones that I would like to win the most are: Ineke Evening Edged in Gold, Ormonde Jayne Tsarina, Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side, and Pink Quartz by Olivier Durbano. The descriptions of the vanilla and the Macarons really intrigue me in the Ineke. I think the vanilla and the labdanum of the Ormonde Jayne would also be a nice pairing. The Musky spiciness of the Dark Side is something that I find interesting. But lastly, the fragrance that intrigues me the most is the Pink Quartz and how delicate it is and how it transforms from the nice rose scent to a more ambery one. That is really exciting for me. I live in the United States.

  • fleurdetilleul says:

Ermano Picco’s, Dalya Azaria’s and Nicoleta Tomsa’s picks would be my picks too and those are the fragrances I would like to enter for (Pink Quartz by Olivier Durbano, Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side and Ormonde Jayne Tsarina). Other editor’s and contributor’s picks are my taste too, like Lauryn Beer’s and Dana Sandu’s for example (Rogue Perfumery Derviche and Maison Sybarite 720). Also, most perfumes if not all from DSH are really beautiful and interesting, but despite loving them, I think it’s time for someone else to try and enjoy those amazing creations since I already did, so I’m not entering for Despina Veneti’s pick (DSH Perfumes Une Robe de Zibeline). Thank you for the chance! I live in the EU.

  • I really liked the Winter fragrances list, so many wonderful fragrances in my opinion. I really liked Rogue Perfumery Derviche. Reading “Sexy hits of animalic labdanum and leather mingle with the guests, smoke swirls underneath the chandeliers, and, from behind the odd closed door, there’s a telling trail of civet and musk.” just made it sound so interesting to me. I also would like to win Ineke Evening Edged in Gold, Ormonde Jayne Tsarina, Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side, and Pink Quartz by Olivier Durbano. I really like the notes of vanilla in the Ineke. The vanilla and the labdanum of the Ormonde Jayne fragrance also interest me. What caught my attention in The Dark Side was the description of the musky spiciness. Olivier Durbano Pink Quartz was also very interesting. I liked the transformation of the rose scent into something different and how soft of a scent it is. I live in the United States.

  • What an incredible list, I am interested in so many.
Olivier Durbano Pink Quartz, the Damask rose being described as soothing and bring to mind a fresh start, sounds perfect.

The reassuring embrace of Tsarina from Ormonde Jayne, is the antidote to 2020. Sign me up.

This one, Vierges et Toreros, Etat Libre d’Orange sounds so intriguing. Im a fan of tuberose both the flower & in fragrance. This one sounds like it would push beyond my usual comfortable, pretty perfume.

Ineke Evening Edged in Gold. Having flowers Im not sure Ive encountered before, Angel’s trumpet & Midnight Candy. A scent to uplift us during bleak times sounds like something we all need.

DSHPerfume Une Robe de Zibeline Sounds like vintage luxury.

Maison Sybarite 720, a water based perfume. Ive heard of this but never tried one. dana sandu / a_nose_knows Says its calming with healing notes. Sounds like a wonderful deep breath of fresh air.

Happy holidays, and a wonderful new year to you all.

  • The Winter fragrances list had many wonderful fragrances in my opinion. One of the fragrances that I really liked Rogue Perfumery Derviche. Reading the Sexy labdanum and leather mixing musk was very enjoyable and would something that I would want. I also want to win Ineke Evening Edged in Gold, Ormonde Jayne Tsarina, Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side, and Pink Quartz by Olivier Durbano. I really like the notes of vanilla in the Ineke fragrance and the Ormonde Jayne fragrance. The Dark Side was also interesting to me because of the description of the musky spiciness. Olivier Durbano Pink Quartz was especially interesting to me since the rose and the benzoin would probably be great together. I live in the United States.

  • I love winter fragrances so much because of their richness and how they comfort me and lift my mood during the cold winter months. When you described Ineke Evening Edged in Gold, I immediately took notice because you mention it is very similar to Feminite du Bois. I love that scent and knew Evening Edged in Gold had to be my first choice. Part of the reason I love it so much is it also resembles the original Dior Dolce Vita, which was my signature scent when it was first launched. I didn’t even know Ineke made this scent so now I must go on the hunt for it!

My 2nd choice would be Olivier Durbano Pink Quartz because it’s a complex spicy/earthy rose fragrance. I adore anything with rose in it. And the more complex for winter the better.

Honestly, your entire list was so intriguing, I’d be thrilled to win any one of them.

Thank you for such a generous giveaway. Wishing you and your family a beautiful holiday season!

    I live in the USA.

  • Interesting choices So many different scents.
The ones pleasing to me are
    -Rogue Perfumery Derviche
I actually know Derviche, and to me it smells like I smoke a shisha , but not a cheap one, but instead a high end one in Istanbul. It’s definitely something fruity in Derviche, cherry maybe. I have to say those impressions are from a blotter, and I never tried it on skin.
    -Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side
After reading Dalya take on The Dark Side, I was reminded of me making and eating Cinnamon spiced Almond Cake , with honeyed pears , and natural vanilla beans
    -Ormonde Jayne Tsarina
Feels like I’m about to rediscover my softer side with Tsarina

The choices of Cafleurebon editors are amazing and all the fragrances sound captivating! I agree with the sentiment that perfumes are essential for people like us, and this year they have been more so than ever. Personally they have helped me stay sane and remain hopeful for better days ahead. My choices from the selection mentioned would be:

    1. Francesca “Bianchi The Dark Side” – I am a lover of deep, spicy vanillas, boozy and resinous notes and I could not possibly imagine
    2. Etat Libre d’Orange “Vierges et Toreros” – the allure of the tuberose – leather accord with added spiciness is irresistible
    3. Olivier Durbano “Pink Quartz” – nothing can be as precious this weird and tough year than a fragrance enveloping like a warm blanket that brings feelings of safety, love and compassion
    4. DSH “Une Robe de Zibeline” – I would love a vintage type of fragrance that brings me to the long gone times of gold, furs and daring ballrooms
    5. Ormonde Jayne “Tsarina” – this fragrance sounds to me like it could serve as an internal compass, helping to find the right direction and get back on track without getting lost too many times in the maze of unexpected complications this year has brought upon us. “Invincible summer” is what I crave.

Thank you for the fantastic reviews and the giveaway!

  • I love when the writers/editors of Cafleurebon list their seasonal favorites! I learn so much from these write-ups.
I am intrigued by Desert Rouge from Maria McElroy. Her Aroma M face and body oils are just out-of-this- world amazing. I love that Desert Rouge was inspired by Morocco. I love being swept away by fragrance and this one surely will do just that.
I also love the way dana described the smooth relief of Maison Sybarite 720. The notes certainly do sound healing. Who doesn’t need healing from 2020?
Finally, I am interested in Derviche. Lauryn has described the devastating sexiness of this creation from a house I have been so looking forward to trying.
    I live in the USA.

  • Let me list the ones I would like to win, with reasons. This is more or less in order of preference, if that will make any difference.

Vierges et Toreros — The combination of leather and tuberose sounds unbeatable to me, and I have never owned an ELd’O fragrance, but have read so much about them.

Tsarina — This is a Geza Schoen design, so it’s high on my list for that reason alone.

Derviche — I keep reading more and more about Rogue perfumes, and this sounds like a beauty. I don’t own a tobacco-dominant fragrance but would love to and this might just fill the bill.

The Dark Side — Dalya’s description makes this sound luxurious and sensuous. Honeyed vanilla surrounded by musk and spices would be an appealing concoction.

Une Robe de Ziberline — Dawn Spencer Hurwitz always comes up with incredible layerings of varied materials, and this sounds like no exception.

Desert Rouge — I greatly support the American Perfumer project and wish them well. The inspiration in Morocco provides some engaging mental imagery which makes me want to try this,

  • “In our lives perfume is essential”
Of course Lockdown or not, sampling, testing and buying perfumes is essential to me. Only try to explain the line to people outside of our beloved fragrance world
I’d love to win one of:
The Dark Side from Francesca Bianchi
Seductive honeyed , and spicy vanilla fragrances are always welcome in my world .
    Derviche Rogue Perfumery
Unique blend of tobacco, saffron, labdanum and leather. I’ve also heard a lot of good things about Rogue Perfumery.
    Tsarina Ormonde Jayne
Summer is too far away, so I’m not sure about “invincible Summer” , but I could sense spring break vibes coming from Tsarina.
Thanks Cafleurebon for the time, and effort during the whole year, keep up the great work
    Cheers from VA

  • My favorite winter fragrances are Kyse Delizia di Marshmallow and Vanille Debauche as well as Dyptyque Eau Duelle because I like something sweeter in the cool air.

This is a wonderful selection of winter fragrances. I most interested in:

Francesca Bianchi The Dark Side because it seems to fit with the sweeter fragrances I listed above.

Olivier Durbano Pink Quarz because it makes me think of the glittery decorations at Christmas.

DSH Une Robe de Zibelline because fur inspiration makes me think of being bundled up and warm in the winter.

    I live in the USA.

  • The only perfume I would like to win is The Dark Side by Francesca Bianchi. I love those dark, boozy, spicy and smokey beasts that keep me warm in winter. To wrap myself in its musky fur, calm my soul and hide from the world is my plan to spend this winter. Healthful New Year to all of you! I live in EU.
