État Libre d’Orange La Fin Du Monde Review (Quentin Bisch) 2013 ~plus Interviews with Quentin Bisch and Étienne de Swardt + Laughing at the Face of the Apocalypse Draw

État Libre d'Orange La Fin Du Monde review

There is a deeply gratifying sense of relief in having just watched a film dealing with “the end of the world”. In times of global pandemic, I’m well aware that a healthy dose of uncomplicated, feel-good entertainment is sometimes just what the doctor ordered. Nonetheless, more than cinematic distractions oozing with right-in-your-face positivity, I currently find myself reaching for films that present a variety of pre/post-apocalyptic visions. Why, you ask? Because they enhance my realization that, no matter how dire things may be, they could be much, MUCH worse! It’s that comforting feeling that, as mankind, we’re not quite THERE yet – “there” being a straightforward hostile Alien invasion (“War Of The Worlds”, “Independence Day”, “Edge of Tomorrow”) or a sneakier one, attempting to rob humankind of its humanity (“Invaders from Mars”, “I Married a Monster from Outer Space”, “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”); a frantic race against time to avoid a collision with a star/comet or keep Earth in orbit (“When Worlds Collide”, “The Day the Earth Caught Fire”, “Armageddon”); an urban dystopia driven by suppressing human (and android) rights (“Blade Runner”, “Mad Max”, “A. I.”); a nightmarish world due to a nuclear/ecological disaster (“Day the World Ended”, “Planet of the Apes”, “The Day After Tomorrow”) or overpopulation/food shortage (“Soylent Green”, “Logan’s Run”, “Delicatessen”); a horrible plague that left humankind infertile (“The Handmaid’s Tale”, “Children of Men”); fellow humans turned into zombies  (“The Last Man on Earth”, “Night of the Living Dead”, ”28 Days Later”); or travelling back in time in a final attempt to save mankind (“La Jetée”, “Terminator 2”, “12 Monkeys”).

apocalyptical movies

“Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb” (1964, Stanley Kubrick/Hawk Films/Columbia Pictures© Screen captures by Despina Veneti, from her Sony Pictures© Blu-ray disc)

My personal preference is for films that deal with the threat of imminent doom (sometimes averted at a heavy cost, sometimes not at all), like “On The Beach” (1959), “Fail Safe” (1964) and especially “Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb” (1964). The latter is my favorite of them all, for its brilliant, utterly hilarious satire of the world’s nuclear “balance of terror”. Stanley Kubrick based the film on the events described in the 1958 suspenseful novel “Red Alert” by Peter George (published under the pseudonym Peter Bryant), a solemn, straightforward account of a nuclear war about to start. The director was initially planning to film it as a serious, dramatic thriller – until the absurdity of the ease with which such a catastrophe could be triggered gave him the ingenious idea to make a black comedy out of it, add the eponymous character of the ex-Nazi doctor, and have the world go in a blast, while Vera Lynn sings her WWII hit “We’ll Meet Again”… Humour can save our sanity, and such is the feeling I get from État Libre d’Orange La Fin Du Monde, a delightfully quirky fragrance of comical spirit, explosive optimism and beautiful ingredients. An ideal companion for my daily home cinema ritual: great-smelling and calorie-free.

État Libre d'Orange La Fin Du Monde 2013 review

État Libre d’Orange La Fin Du Monde & the 1958 first edition of Peter Bryant’s “Red Alert” (photo/digital effects by Despina Veneti©)

Fragrance Foundation Award Winning Perfumer Quentin Bisch agrees with my perception of the fragrance: “I’m glad you see the optimism and humour in it; it is indeed a very positive perfume that expresses the idea that every end is a beginning”. He first met the brand’s founder Étienne de Swardt, when he visited the État Libre d’Orange boutique as a fragrance lover dreaming of becoming a perfumer. Étienne gave Quentin the chance to display his talent in La Fin Du Monde, making it the young perfumer’s first solo fragrance assignment. Concerning the scent, Quentin told me: “The brief was Blaise Cendrars’ “La Fin Du Monde”, a surreal, dramatic, poetic novel where the Apocalypse happens. The writing is very cinematographic, focusing on the explosion of pretty much everything. The explosion of Earth brought to me images of a big seed that erupts… that, and cinema, gave me the idea of popcorn! The spectacularity of the end of the world in movies felt similar to the baroque profusion of colors and actions in the text. The idea was to illustrate this explosion of seeds, with the “bang” being the end, but also the start of something else. I saw the composition as an “exercise de style” around exploding popcorn, cumin, sesame and carrot seeds… and a cannon powder accord (like the seed of war going off) made of Mystikal® (strong metallic/incensey synthetic note) and Sclarene® (powdery, dry, burnt note reminiscent of hot wax). I wanted to smell the texture of all these powders in the air or on the ground as everything explodes.”

Similarly to The Afternoon Of A Faun, the idea for La Fin Du Monde came to État Libre d’Orange founder/creative director Étienne de Swardt during one of his many discussions with the late Jacques Damase (1930-2014), art publisher/collector extraordinaire, and a friend/mentor during the last years of his life. As Étienne put it, “Jacques started the chain reaction that led to the intellectual “ménage à trois” between him, Quentin, and myself as the middle link”. At the time he was entrusted with this ambitious project, Quentin Bisch was essentially starting out his career. When I asked Étienne if he felt he was taking a risk, he said: “Compared to the immense, everyday risks that staying alive involves, what’s so perilous about trusting a fragrance to a newcomer?” After all, he had found in the young perfumer an intelligent, cultured person that comprehended the story that had to be told, while being equipped with the skill to realise the scent in the appropriate tone: “I had every reason to expect great results from Quentin, we understood each other; he was the one who gave me that “bang!” I was looking for, the idea of the seed explosion. To my delight, he doesn’t have the “formulation only” mentality; and like with you, Despina, we can discuss together a variety of subjects. That’s the kind of person I enjoy talking to, about fragrance or anything else”.

La Fin Du Monde Etat libre D'orange review

État Libre d’Orange La Fin Du Monde (photo collage/digital effects by Despina Veneti©)

État Libre d’Orange La Fin Du Monde opens with a real “pop”, an aromatic blast of its central popcorn accord which, at this stage, is savory and warm, with a pinch of salt and a generous sprinkle of black pepper. A rather distant whiff of sweetness kicks in shortly: it feels like the cinemagoers sitting near you have ordered their popcorn caramelised – or could it be coming from the candy sold in the theatre foyer? The movie starts, and there’s plenty of action: a gunpowder accord attracts your attention with its metallic, smoky undertones, blending in with your popcorn – but you need not worry, it won’t overpower the aromatic experience of your snack. Now, what’s a film without romance? When the deceptively gentle Miss Iris enters the scene, make no mistake: she’s there to star, to captivate. The delicately airy freesia accents give her youthfulness, however she is no shy ingénue; her intrinsic rootiness, powederiness and buttery warmth are enhanced by the cornucopia of seeds (carrot, sesame, ambrette), the electrifying energy of cumin and the creaminess of sandalwood, emanating self-assured elegance and sophistication. She’ll find her match in spicy, appetizing Mr. Popcorn, who compliments her perfectly; together, they’ll eventually overcome the dark forces of Gunpowder, and work their blissful magic during the long drydown of their existence… (THE END)

Official Notes: Black Pepper, Popcorn, Roasted Sesame; Freesia, Iris, Cumin Seed; Ambrette Seed, Sandalwood, Gunpowder Accord.

Disclaimer: My thanks to Étienne de Swardt for my bottle of État Libre d’Orange La Fin Du Monde. The opinions are my own.

I appreciate the tongue-in-cheek approach of this fragrance. I never expected to see popcorn and gunpowder together in a fragrance (either of these on their own would be uncommon enough). I currently have only tried a couple fragrances from ELDO (You or Someone Like You & Remarkable People), both of which I really enjoy. My current favorite post-apocalyptic movies would be Wall-E and Lego Movie 2 (yes, we have young kids). Currently living in California, USA.

  • Etat continues to beguile. I enjoyed the direct information from Quentin in this review. My favorite ELDO is Spice Must Flow! With love from Canada.

  • I love the delicate balance between silly and serious nature of the review and interviews, it’s so refreshing to read and hear in these strange times.

My favourite post apocalyptic movie is either the road or Shaun of the dead.

And my favourite fragrance from the house is putain des palace.

    I’m from Ireland,EU.

Interesting review. Amazing scent with notes it offers
elegance and refinement certainly worthy of a star.

  • Delightful review by Despina of État Libre d’Orange La Fin Du Monde. I had never heard of a popcorn note or a gunpowder accord. Combining the movie going experience with the smell of popping popcorn, gunpowder actin, romantic Miss Iris – I got involved in the story and wondering “What is Next?”. No experience with État Libre d’Orange, yet. This fragrance seems intriguing enough to check out. Writing from the USA.

  • IcarusMidAir says:

I absolutely loved Despina’s melange of scent and cinema! Genius! And also, I have written down a handful of films to add to my ‘to watch list’.
I have not explored any of the Etat libre d’orange creations, but I have smelled a couple of Quentin’s concoctions and I deeply appreciate his style.
I have a penchant for the dystopian genre, so I liked many of the Black Mirror films (although not many of them deal with a literal impending doom). And I love Melancholia too!

    I’m based in Romania.

I like Despina’s description of the playful abandon with which this fragrance seems to have been created. Movies give us the chance to think the unthinkable in a safe and creative way and I like the way she sees this fragrance as metaphoric for both an explosion of the world and the fantasy versions of such an end that we see at the cinema, Popcorn, salt, pepper, caramel, iris, various seeds, and gunpowder make for a formula that could be awful, but I suspect it has been pulled off with skill. I still have not tried any ELDO fragrances. I keep meaning to. I wouldn’t call it a great movie, but I have a fondness for MARS ATTACKS. This piece was great fun to read. I live in the US, in North Carolina.

  • So interesting notes, it could smell very unique. I would very like to try La Fin Du Monde. I like the review as well. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • Iuno Feronia says:

Right now our lifes seem to face the Apocalypse: another lock down, a terrorist attack, if this is the end of the world I would like to smell of popcorn, iris and black pepper. Thanks for the draw and all the best from Vienna, Austria.

  • I loved this !Learned something new about howQuentin Bisch started with a bang
My favorite EDLO are Putain de palace and like this-Tilda Swinton . I can imagine wearing Fin du Monde while binge watching mad max and dr Strangelove two great movies
And I would not need popcorn

  • Oh I’ve tried this one, and let me tell you, if the end of the world smells this sweet and cozy, I’d be happy to see it! My favorite LLDO fragrance for now is divin’enfant, simply because it’s my girlfriend’s signature scent. And my favorite post apocalyptic movies are Mad Max Fury Road and Zombieland.
    I live in France.

  • Humour can save our sanity. I love this! Thank you for reminding me 🙂 I guess the ancient Greeks knew something when they invented tragocomedy philosophy.
The description of La Fin du Monde is waw, caramel, gunpowder, iris, freesia all together in a dynamic mix.
Some of my favourite distopian movies are Black Mirror series, Years and Years mini-series, The Leftovers series, Minority Report, The Lobster, Handmaid’s Tale.
    I haven’t tried any État Libre d’Orange.
    Hugs from Romania.

Oh how I love ELDO’s weird and humorous takes on fragrance. And sometimes I don’t know how something with such strange notes ends up smelling so good. There are too many winners for me to pick a favorite. Thanks for the draw, in the US.

  • I absolutely loved the conceptual framing of the review! The scene was set in a manner very true to État’s ethos. As a big fan of their more conceptual scents, I would love love love to experience this for myself. Writing from the USA.

  • I really enjoyed the way that the perfume notes were described, making it feel like scenes from a movie. I thought that that was a very creative way of reviewing the fragrance. I also really liked reading about the gunpowder accord, it reminds me of a bomb which is then connected the name of the fragrance. My favorite apocalyptic film was actually mentioned, it is Dr. Strangelove. It is just such a funny film. I live in Florida, USA.

  • Thanks for the review Despina. I have to admit, Quentin is one of my favorite perfumers. From Delina to Wanted By Night, he has created some exceptional fragrances for me and my partner.

It was interesting to read about his relationship with Étienne de Swardt and the late Jacques Damase. I would love to try his explosive take on La Fin Du Monde.

My favorite ELDO fragrances are Fat Electrician and Tom of Finland.

If I had to choose a favorite apocalyptic movie it would be Interstellar. The score, the acting, the story. Best movie this century!

    UK

  • I love the idea of mixing a certain genre of film and its contents with a fragrance. I have never heard of such a concept. I really liked the bit on the mixing of gunpowder, smoke, and popcorn. I think that was such a cool concept. I don’t have a favorite État Libre d’Orange fragrance yet but I am planning on trying them in the future. My favorite apocalyptic film is actually “On the Beach”. The emotions of the characters from that film always move me. I live in Florida, US.

My favorite fragrance from this house is Like This. It is just such a funny film. I live in Florida, USA.

  • I liked the reminder that “humor can save our sanity.” I’ve not seen one movie mentioned in this article, I just don’t really watch many movies. Maybe 2 movies a year and pre/post apocalpytic would not not be my choice. Love that Etienne took a chance on Quentin, he is very talented. My favorite of the line is in the pink bottle (the name escapes me now). USA.

  • my fav etat libre is fat electrician. The name and presentation of this one got me hooked.
    Im from Greece

  • I am very intrigued by the popcorn accord here and I would love to see how it works with the black pepper note and gunpowder accord. I really like Putain des Palaces from ELDO, and enjoyed a Quiet Place as a movie from this genre. In the USA.

  • I enjoy many fragrances from ELO, one of which is 500 Years. I enjoyed reading about the history of this fragrance and the description of the gunpowder note. Thanks for another fabulous draw! Mich USA

  • La Fin Du Monde I’ve smelled, and it’s hard to describe. Despina did very well. The opening is harsh, but the base is playful combination of iris, popcorn and gunpowder. I like it , but it’s one of those fragrances you should always try first, and NEVER blind-buy.
I now have 3 Etat Libre d’Orange frags- 100 ml’s of You Or Someone Like , Like This – extremely underrated fragrance that always makes me happy . Experimentum Crucis I received on 1st of January , late Christmas gift from my sister .
Unlike most Etat Libre d’Orange fragrances, performance of “Orange Extraordinaire” line is unreal. All 3 are really potent.
500 Years I’ll also get for the winter. To me it’s sweet jammy rose , with sweet chocolate in the base , making it way more gooey sweet, than floral. Of course that’s my experience.
My favorite post apocalyptic movie? Let me think … The Book of Eli
All profiles i already follow on Instagram
Virginia USA or London UK at least 97/100 times

  • I have the Afternoon of a Faun and it is great for those who like that mapple syrup accord. I have not smelled La Fun du Monde but have heard about its popcorn accord as this review confirms. My fav. from ELDO is Jamin et Cigarette. USA

  • Great review Despina! I don’t know whether to laugh or cry or laugh to keep from crying. Post apocalypse indeed! ELdO does like to push the envelope with its offerings. Popcorn and gunpowder are appropriate for end times. Thank goodness there’s some iris in there to remind me of happier times. Favorite ELdO is Fat Electrician. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • Daniel Fisher says:

Pull up a seat boys, we’re watching the end of the world. Popcorn and gunpowder really seem like a sort of apt pairing for the end of the world (in America, at least) Nothing is sacred for The Free State of Orange and that’s how we like it.
Love the interviews, very engaging lol
My favorite apocalypse flick you ask? Ummm Does End Game count? It’s only like half apocalypse. I like The Day After Tomorrow.
I like Rien Intense the best. Very avant-garde
    From Texas with Love
    Xoxo

  • La Fin Du Monde picked up my interest because of the gunpowder. I’m a gun lover, and I find the smell of burned gunpowder appealing, plus everyone loves popcorn
At the moment my number one Etat Libre d’Orange fragrance is Spice Must Flow, and I find the smell of it very similar to Chai Masala – Rose, Cinnamon, Ginger, Cardamom . If you know Chai Masala, you know Spice Must Flow. Fabulous smell, and unlike some other Etat Libre d’Orange fragrances it’s a powerful one, really powerful.
My other two favorite Etat Libre d’Orange fragrances are Remarkable People and You or Someone like You .
“12 Monkeys” is my pick for post apocalyptic movie.
Enjoyed the review , and thanks for the draw. USA

  • The popcorn accord that is savory and warm, with a pinch of salt and a generous sprinkle of black pepper, is definitely intriguing to me. Sounds so delicious!
My favourite ELDO perfume is Spice Must Flow!
    Florida, USA

  • So very unusual, this house never fails to create discussion.
I have bottles of CDG 2011 and Beaufort 1805 Tonnerre, both have unusual qualities which I highly appreciate.
État Libre d’Orange La Fin Du Monde certainly carries the unusual style to greater heights.
    Excellent review.
    Greetings from Canada.

  • What a smart and bold approach! I was very interested to know the history of the creation of this fragrance firsthand, I liked how young Perfumer Quentin Bish was not afraid to make the fragrance the way he perceived it after hearing the brief, this is a very interesting and unusual composition, which saw the light of day thanks to the courage of Étienne de Swardt and État Libre d’Orange, and the composition turned out to be with double meaning, which is great. Real art!
I have tried Bijou Romantique by this brand and I found it lovely and my favorite movie is A Quiet Place (2018)
    I am from UK, Wisbech

  • flosolentia says:

This is an excellent interview that gives a complete understanding of why the fragrance is called like that! And what is its main idea of it is. I think this is one of the important factors when creating a perfume. Besides, the composition is very bright and really set you in the right mood when watching some post-apocalyptic film. very bold and interesting composition. I haven’t tried anything from this brand but my favorite movie of such kind is 28 Days Later.
    I am from UK

  • Popcorn and gunpowder what a combination, how is that for going to the movies 🙂 Considering the fact that our movie theaters had to close doors due to COVID, this would be the perfect alternative. Would love to try during one of my movie nights. Great review by Despina and again what a daring composition by Etat! Living in the EU

I agree the power of cinema and perfumery is inextricably linked movies and fragrance take you on a journey and evoke emotions and memories. A beautiful description by Despina captured my attention and my heart. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • I enjoyed reading about the inspiration of the perfume ans how that lead to the thought of exploding seeds hence the popcorn and other seed notes as well as the gunpowder accord. I also liked Despina’s description of La Fin Du Monde. It was imaginative and though provoking having the scent described as a trip to the movies almost with the popcorn and sweets and the movie starting with action (the gunpowder accord) and romance (iris) etc. The scent sounds unique and interesting. I dont have a favorite ELdO fragrance but a number i want to try like I Am Trash, She Was An Anomaly, You or Someone Like You, etc. As far as film i did enjoy “Warm Bodies” and “28 Days Later” among others. Thanks for the generous draw, from CT USA.

  • Whenever I’ll want to watch a movie that illustrates the end of the world I will remember to come here and pick one. Of course I had seen many of them but I acknowledge they are some films that I might have missed out. Etat libre d’orange made my list. In the near future I plan to buy a more commercial scent since this one seems very niche for me, although definitely made me curious. I like that this brand has an equilibrium between innovation and mass market desires. I’m live in Romania, EU.

  • Interesting and unusual notes in this one, but this is already a signature for this house. The note of popcorn sounds delicious!
I love post-apocalyptic movies that are centered around the idea of zombies and one that I have watched many times is I am Legend.

    Thank you! Greetings from Europe!

  • Amanda32828 says:

Awesome review. I love everything this brand stand for, their creations, their form of expression, the peculiarity of the concoctions. This one like some of the ones that I have experience sound very interesting. The official notes, can’t even imagine how the mix together. Also the popcorn notes and gunpowder is like a revolution waiting to happen, like the hippie war that never started. État Libre d’Orange La Fin Du Monde, please be mine.
Also I’m not a movie connoisseur but since I have to pick an apocalyptic movie I’ll go with Pandemic (how’s that for humor) My favorite fragrance for this house is I’m Trash off course. Thank you for another great opportunity. Commenting from Orlando, Fl.

  • “And love yes looooove (for scent) Despina, Michelyn will never tear us apart ” would have sung Ian Curtis to celebrate your immense writing talent here Despina and our immense mutual passion to change the world through just a blast of seeds. As always I stay your humble “feal” miss Veneti 😉
    ❤️

  • I thoroughly enjoyed Despinas description of La Fin Du Monde’s drydown as a movie plot. Very well done!
My favourite ELDO scent is Attaquer Le Soleil – Marquis De Sade
    I hail from Canada.

  • marcopietro says:

Great and nice idea to describe the evolution of the fragrance as a cinematographic script with a succession of images on the screen and in the hall, translated into unusual and fascinating smells.
I love ELDO fragrances and I always appreciate their creative process. I own a few and the preference changes as the seasons and mood change, at the moment my favorite is Tom of Finland.
    I live in EU
    Thanks!

  • I love everything about this. The inspiration, the final product as described, the interview. Thanks, Despina for this great review. Etat Libre d’Orange is my favorite house right now and my favorite scent from them is a tie between “Like This” and “I am Trash”. As for a favorite apocalyptic film… that’s tough…. probably Lars Von Trier’s “Melancholia”. It is very different. And. I am in Kansas, US.

  • Love the insight into the humor of the fragrance and context of it’s creation. My fav ELDO is Vierges Et Toreros, a sweaty jasmine leather perfect for Mad Max. I live in the US

  • “When I asked Étienne if he felt he was taking a risk, he said: “Compared to the immense, everyday risks that staying alive involves, what’s so perilous about trusting a fragrance to a newcomer?”” I enjoyed how bold he was to say such a daunting fact about life and the fragrance. Unfortunately, I do not own any of État Libre d’Orange fragrances and I would live for this to be my first. my favorite post-apocalyptic film would 28 Days Later. I live out here in Salinas California aka, “The Salad Bowl” of the world

  • Waldo favorite says:

Perfumes are a serious matter, but it singularly refreshing to see the End of the world perfume treated with a humorous approach inspired by its highly gifted creator. Kudos for the interview, a true meeting of minds…

  • Thank you for your draw.
I read often about etat libre d’ orange, their special, sometimes provocative concept and their Dna 😉
I love the humor in this. The idea that beginn and end is always hand in hand.
Would love to take my nose on it ♡

La Fin Du Monde is my favorite État Libre d’Orange, I think it’s the best match between high concept and execution while still being eminently wearable. Despina did a great job breaking down the notes, through her writing I can smell La Fin Du Monde in my nose like I didn’t finish my sample several years ago.

Mad Max: Fury Road is an operatic feast of an end of the world film, a rare instance when you can truly see where the millions of dollars spent on it went into the art.

I’m in the USA, thanks for the drawing.

  • This seems so cool!never heard or tried a perfume with popocorn note. I liked in the review the movie references.Although I am not a fan of this genre of movies -I prefer the dystopian types-I do have 2 tv series :The 100 and Raised by wolves.Never tried from this house a perfume.I live in Italy

  • wandering_nose says:

Despina has described with both great distance and humor the references the composition evokes and the perfumer’s train of thought. The concept is utterly fascinating and I would love to have the opportunity to smell the final product of the founder’s apocalyptic idea and the perfumer’s talent. Love the notes of iris and popcorn, looking forward to smelling them both in one fragrance. And the gunpowder note is just fascinating with the Mystikal and Sclarene – I have learned something new! I have a few favorites from the brand, those include: Divin Enfant, Bijou Romantique, Putain des Palaces and Like This. My favorite post-apocalyptic movie would be “The Road”. I am based in Ireland. Thank you for the great giveaway

  • Pre/post-apocalyptic visions , lots of smoke, iris , gunpowder, sweetened popcorn … what an unusual idea to begin with.
La Fin Du Monde is the truth representation of niche perfumery.
Spice Must Flow is the one Erat Libre d’Orange that got me by surprise. I’m Dune Saga fanboy, and I’ve read all 23 novels.Right after I’ve read the review here on Cafleurebon, I just had to check it out. I was a pricey one, but it was worth it.
Spicy roses, with cinnamon and non gourmand sweetness , and with bombastic lasting power.
I’m not sure if it’s the concentration of the oils, some fixatives, or something else but Spice Must Flow, 500 Years and Experimentum Crucis are on a different level compared to the regular Etat Libre d’Orange fragrances. Yes pricey ones for sure, but I sincerely think for what you’re getting the price is actually reasonable.
Up until me checking out Spice Must Flow, 500 Years and Experimentum Crucis , my favorite Etat Libre d’Orange was my Bijou Romantic.
    Right now:
    1. Spice Must Flow
    2. 500 Years
    3. Experimentum Crucis
    4. Bijou Romantic.
Mad Max is my favorite apocalyptic franchise , I know the replicas of all four.

I live in Florida in the USA. What I love about this review is the opening of the popcorn note… I just think that is so cool and unique and something I’m sure everyone can associate with and loves it! Haha Also the canon fire note that is slightly metallic and powdery, u don’t have to have personally smelled that before in person to have a sense of what that would be like. Also how the iris comes in to play and adds a slight warmth and sweetness to it all to bind it all together! Just sounds like a really fun unique and exciting fragrance I would love to get my hands on! I love the interview with the perfumer talking about his inspiration and also love the list of all the movies! Was fun seeing which ones I have seen before. I current own Exit the King, which is a great fragrance and one of the best soap fragrances out there, so I know the qualm that this house brings! As far as my favorite apocalyptic war movie… can I say Avengers End Game? Does that count? Haha… it should count, even though it is modern and more super heroes! Haha. I also love Independence Day! Anyway, thanks for the review! And the opportunity! I’d love to win this one!

  • What a day to mention a scent with this name! I hope it doesn’t become one of those movies. Other than that, I’m thinking of Warm Bodies. It somehow fits the mood. Indeed the brand’s ethos is what we need these days. I only had a few glimpses from ELDO. I’ll make sure to try more next time I have the chance. I really appreciate the creation back story here as well. (US)

  • I think Despina’s choice for La fin du monde is very befitting for the time we are in. I catch myself watching these apocalyptic films more and more. I like the ones with a bit of humour the most like Independence Day, Attack the Block and the End of the World (one epic pub crawl). I have never tried this fragrance, but with the popcorn accord it sounds like the kind of fun I appreciate in films as well. My favourite ELDO is Hermann a mes Côtes also by Monsieur Bisch I believe. Marit UK

  • I totally agree with Despina, no matter how dire things may be, they could always be much worse, so it’s better to see things with optimism and humor to enjoy life much better.
I love that they added a spark of humor when creating La Fin Du Monde, linking apocalyptic movies full of explosions with the popcorn popping haha, wow. But the thing that I loved the most was reading Quentin saying that “every end is a new beginning”, very nice words and what a great idea to express it in a fragrance.
By the way, I’m a huge huge fan of ELdO, I own 3 of their fragrances (with very hard earned money), Rien, Rossy de Palma Eau de protection, and of course my signature scent, a Quentin Bisch creation, my beloved Hermann A Mes Cotes Me Paraissait Une Ombre, and I really would love to add La Fin Du Monde to my ELdO collection.
I have 2 favorite apocalyptic movies, This is the End, and Zombieland 2, both are so f. funny.
I live in Mexico but I have a relative in California, so please please please Pleaaaase count me in for the giveaway.
    Regards!

  • Apocalyptic visions, Armageddon , The Mayan calendar….
The story behind La Fin Du Monde is unconventional, just like the fragrance itself.
    I love popcorn since I was a kid , let’s see…
I’ve sampled “I am trash” because of Despina Veneti take on Cafleurebon last autumn, and bought it a week after. My favorite Etat Libre d’Orange
Again because of Lauryn Beer “She Was an Anomaly” review bought a sample, but I’ll wait for the spring to make up my mind. The weather is way too cold for it.
I’m also waiting for my Experimentum Crucis sample to arrive .
“Escape from New York” is my favorite post apocalyptic movie
    Thanks

A truly original review for what seems like a totally uncommon fragrance! Popcorn and gunpowder do sound very intriguing, and it would be amazing to start exploring ELDO fragrances with this one! In terms of apocalyptic movies, I quite like movies dealing with natural disasters (sci-fi, aliens, zombies and the lot are definitely not my cup of tea and bore me), they feel more plausible and so even scarier! I live in Milan, Italy

  • La Fin Du Monde reminds me of slightly burnt sesame popcorn
As a Pastry Chef I always compare fragrances to some kind of food, I can’t help it.
500 Years, my favorite Etat Libre d’Orange smells like chocolate rose and cardamom tarts, with rose water .
Fat Electrician is my second favorite Etat Libre d’Orange. No doubt it’s unique . Combination of vetiver and the cream is done very well.
Own both by the way .
10 Cloverfield Lane was a breath of fresh air, well made apocalyptic movie.
Appreciate the review , and the giveaway campaign.

  • What I enjoyed most about this review was the descriptiveness of the fragrance. As soon as she mentioned that this fragrance is resemblant of popcorn, I was hesitant. After further description my mind is a bit more open to the fragrance. I don’t have a favorite from the brand as I have yet to smell on of their offerings. My absolute favorite post-apocalyptic film is hands-down Wall-E. Kind regards from Illinois, USA.

  • What a lovely article once again and I believe it’s a great choice for a review. This perfume sounds very unique, I have been reading about it for a long time but I never got to smell it.
The combination of notes is absolutely visionary, it does ELdO proper justice. Salted popcorn, gunpowder and iris, and while it sounds like a paradox, I am sure it smells like a dream.
My favorite ELdO frags are Jasmin et Cigarettes, Like this and Putain des Palaces.
My favorite post-apocalyptic movie is The Road. On a less introspective, more action driven note, 2012 is a nice easy watch.
I live in the EU, thanks for an awesome draw!

In 2020 how you will promote your products is really important, and I do admit “La Fin du Monde” backstory is catchy. Gunpowder, popcorn and mild sweetness?!? I’m in.
Experimentum Crucis i had to smell, because of Despina AGAIN Lol glorifying it a few months back. After some hesitation I bought it. Suits me well, and it’s a beast . It’s stronger than most Montale fragrances, and my Remarkable People is so much weaker compared to it. The two in my possession.
    Beautiful giveaway, thanks a lot.

“Strangelove” is such a gem – too over the top for some, but the humor is lost on people that don’t appreciate the absurd; the scent, as with the other ELdO ones I have experienced, seems playful and a bit challenging in the best way would love to try this one out

  • I love that he gave a newcomer a shot and it sounds like an amazing scent. A gunpowder accord, I don’t think I’ve ever had a chance to smell that in a fragrance. Thanks for the chance. Lauren from SC, USA.

I have a soft spot of ELDO’s marketing. I’m a fan of a few of their fragrances, including Fat Electrician and Divine Enfant. I appreciate Despina’s history lesson on the house. My favorite post-apocalyptic film is Children of Men, which fits this fragrance pretty well based on the review. California, USA

  • Interesting review, I’ve already smelled it! My favorite is definitely Like This, love the pumpkin. For the film, I could pick Mad Max 😀 From Finland.

  • Enjoyed the review. I like ELDO concepts. They are interesting. Haven’t tried most of their fragrances. At the moment I enjoy Remarkable People. Thanks, Ca

  • My favorite post-apocalyptic film is A Boy and his Dog and my favorite État Libre d’Orange perfume is Fils de Dieu du riz et des agrumes. Liked this quote in Despina’s review: ” Quentin Bisch agrees with my perception of the fragrance: “I’m glad you see the optimism and humour in it; it is indeed a very positive perfume that expresses the idea that every end is a beginning”. I wanted to smell the texture of all these powders in the air or on the ground as everything explodes.” Thanks for the draw, I live in the USA.

  • If for Erica catastrophe, science fiction films are the ultimate test to scape and gratifie an urge for feeling safe for me I’ve been inmerse watching Film Noir from the ’40s and ’50s like: Scarlet Street,Women in the Window, Kiss me Deadly,Detour,Murder my sweet or Beat the devil, with H. Bogart and Gina Lollobrigida.

The idea of broadcasting the end of the world while sitting confortably in my armchair eating popcorn is absolutely fantastic.

Nobody can’t denied ELO’s perfume concept is always very original and surreal. I see and feel so often how perfume brands struggle to tell a story with their scents and sometimes the concept and the names giving are very dissapointing from a creative point of view, but ELO challenges you to cross the line and experince a more creative perfume concept without taking any physical risk but a mental challenge to your nose. The scent pyramide is also very interesting with pop corn and gunpower, roasted sesame, a glympse of originality in a market still obssesed with Aoud fragrances.
My fab apocalyptic film goes to Solaris by Andrei Tarkovsky and Planet of the Apes (1968). Ireland,EU.

  • Provocative campaigns , names , slogans or bottles do not move me much. All I care is the smell, and most importantly how it makes me feel.
I will sample “La Fin Du Monde” not because of prophecies, we’ve all heard about the End Times , but because of the:
    a) Notes – result intrigues me the most .
    b) The perfumer . I like Quentin Bisch , Delina is a beauty .
    c) Then comes the usual nice job done by Despina,
I do have one Etat Libre d’Orange fragrance in my collection. When i was young, my grandma was growing pumpkins, and i’m so used to pumpkin pies , cakes , soups , cheesecakes and so on.I was looking for fragrances with pumpkin accord and then blind-bought Tilda Swinton Like This , and i love it .
Unfortunately I have not yet tried the 3 from the premium Orange Extraordinaire . Samples of the 3 are harder to find
Thank you for the giveaway , I am Legend i have to say is my favorite apocalyptic movie
Back and forth between USA and Scotland. 1 week in US -> 1 week in Scotland, and so on. Basically both USA and EU/UK at the same time.

  • I really enjoyed thinking about all the movies in this list, and I have to agree that Dr Strangelove is the best. “ Gentlemen! you can’t fight in here! This is the War Room!” I have liked popcorn type notes in other perfumes so I’m curious to try this. My favorite in this line so far is You or Someone like You. I live in the USA.

  • Michael Prince says:

Despina, great interviews, intro, and review of État Libre d’Orange La Fin Du Monde. I loved the book and movie references referring to the end of the world by different methods and how during our COVID-19 times remaining optimistic because things can always get worse. I actually really enjoy Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove and like Despina enjoy the humorous nuclear balance of terror portrayed in the movie. This fragrance sounds very unique with the carmelized popcorn that transforms into a burnt, smoky, and metallic vibe that mixes with the Iris. This is super unique and would love the opportunity to try this. My favorite État Libre d’Orange fragrance is Exit the King. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • This one sounds interesting with all those different and unusual notes.
My favorite from this house is Putain des Palaces and my favorite movie is End of Days starting Arnold Schwarzenegger.

  • I love the way ELDO names their fragrances and La Fin du Monde is not an exception, considering the exceptional times we live in. It is interesting how, in times of restrictions, fragrance producers try to make our imagination alive and try to remind us, through our smell, the strongest sense we poses, all the activities that made us happy. I do have a favorite fragrance from ELDO, and actually that is one of my favorite fragrance all time, Putain des Palace, a sweet sexy elegant powder. An apocalyptic movie I love is I am legend, with Will Smith, due to it’s lessons of surviving alone and surrounded by danger. I live in Bucharest, Romania

  • As a movie and popcorn lover I can really appreciate the idea of this fragrance, and the notes, are very unusual, so I would love to try this.
My favorite apocalyptic movie is Mad Max Fury Road, and, favorite fragrance from the brand is Fat Electrician and I am from Denmark.

  • these are definitely some interesting notes – I wouldn’t know what to expect, judging from the notes alone.
the thing I liked the most was Etienne’s approach to trusting a beginner with a fragrance – “Compared to the immense, everyday risks that staying alive involves, what’s so perilous about trusting a fragrance to a newcomer?”
we should do ths more – keeping things in perspective and not inflate the importance of ordinary issues.

  • Shamrock1313 says:

Nice review – but ELDO has to be one of the worst niche houses around. So many bad releases.

  • Thanks for another great review, Despina! ELDO never fails to pique the interest of the fragrance community. I love your reference to post apocalyptic films, the scent of popcorn, gunpowder, iris is very interesting. I’m excited to try it. My favorite from this house is You or Someone Like You. Thanks for this draw. – CA, USA

It was beautiful to learn about the creative connection between Étienne de Swardt & Jacques Damase. Conversation between different disciplines can lead to some incredible works being produced. Afternoon of a Faun & Rein are my favourite two from État Libre d’Orange & as for post-apocalyptic film well Children of Men, Akira & La Jetée are all excellent.

This is a fascinating scent, with a combination of notes that I’ve not seen before.

I like how this entire review is like watching a movie trailer.

I have smelt and enjoy Fat Electrician from this house

Despina’s review made me chuckle. The presentation left me feeling like I had red/blue 3D glasses on in a theatre surrounded by rubble, lucky enough to be reclined back, tossing popcorn in my mouth while the world comes crashing down around me, gunsmoke settling on the audience. I’m an observer, but I’m also immersed in the situation – sounds like experiencing a great fragrance to me. I just purchased an ELDO Etat the (ALMOST) Complete Collection Discovery kit, so I have yet to decide on a favorite as I’m still working through the box. My favorite post-apocalyptic flick would have to be 13 Monkeys. I live in Colorado, USA. Thanks, and take care.

  • I’ve always wanyed to know what the end of the world smelled like, and thanks for this article I have a great idea! Thank you so much to everyone for a chance to win I will follow on instagram. USA

I appreciated that Despina tied the fragrance to the many, many apocalyptic films dealing with the end of the world. She did her homework. My favorite apocalyptic film is Armageddon.

My fave an État Libre d’Orange fragrance is I Am Trash.

  • doveskylark says:

A popcorn accord! How fantastic is that! I often put black pepper on popcorn, too. ELDO fragrances are so original. I like Rien from this house. Despina’s review got me thinking about pre/post apocalyptic films. Honestly, I am not the biggest fan. I prefer film noir: but the chosen actions of film noir characters often brings about a personal apocalypse.

    I live in the USA.

I’ve been reading this review and I jusy couldn’t believe it. This is probably the weirdest fragrance i’ve read about. What a notes! Popcorn? Gunpowder? To be honest I haven’t been so courious about a fragrance for a long time. I got to smell it and I think it will either total failure or pure genius. Congrats for Despina for such a good work with so challenging one. Poland, EU

  • Very Interesting fragragrance, I’m intrigued by État Libre d’Orange La Fin Du Monde. Like how Despina described:” opens with a real “pop”, an aromatic blast of its central popcorn accord which, at this stage, is savory and warm, with a pinch of salt and a generous sprinkle of black pepper. ” Will be exciting to try this perfume!

  • Despina’s knack for comparison to another sensorial medium (visual) and film is fabulous. I love Fin Du Monde— I’ve owned it in the past and its notes have always kept me sniffing. It definitely gives me BladeRunner vibes- sturdily post-consumer. This and Like This are easy Etat Libre faves. I live in Los Angeles/USA
