Esxence 2019: Perris Monte Carlo Jasmin de Pays Review + Jean-Claude Ellena’s Grasse Draw

Jean Claude-Ellena via CaFleureBon  (courtesy of Jean-Claude Ellena) composed Perris Monte Carlo Jasmin de Pays

“My devotion to jasmine lies with my childhood in Grasse.” ~ Maître Parfumeur Jean-Claude Ellena

What a coup it was when Creative Director Gian Luca Perris of Perris Monte Carlo was moved to create a collection celebrating the cradle of perfumery, Grasse! It was foremost in his mind that none other than native Grasseois Maître Parfumeur Jean-Claude Ellena would memorialize those blooms which he had harvested with his grandmother as a young boy –  rose de Mai and jasmin de Grasse. A bond so formative, intimate, pivotal – must be respected and acknowledged. I mustn’t be greedy, much as I venerate the rose; we at ÇaFleureBon are a team and do well to consider one another’s needs and desires. Having to choose, Perris Monte Carlo Jasmin de Pays ensnared me posthaste. I confess that jasmin de Grasse first clutched me by the throat in 1972 and hasn’t released me since.

As a young girl traveling alone thoroughly intoxicated by its natural beauty, the Provençal plenitude of floral, herbal, animalic aromas which assaulted my senses left a permanent impression: Molinard, Fragonard, Gallimard – I frequented each factory more than once, committing those odors to memory. I sojourned at a tiny pension (no Air BnB in those days!) called Le Paradis: from its flung-open windows I was privy to goats wandering the hillside – the scent of herbs crushed under their little cloven hooves, freshly hung laundry. I rambled throughout the countryside, the widespread fields of flowers like an inebriated somnabulant. Thirteen years later and a newlywed, I cautioned my husband that once we approached the city of Grasse he would notice a significant change in me: he laughingly dismissed it as hyperbole. When we did arrive he stared at me as if I were a stranger: “Your skin! Your demeanor. You ARE a different person!” It was just so – relaxed, blissful in my element, I felt as if I had come home to roost.

Perris Monte Carlo Jasmin de Pays

Jasmine Festival in Grasse via Telegraph UK

Perris Monte Carlo Jasmin de Pays is my Gold Standard forever jasmine; I doubt that I will ever need another. The master has seen to that, evoking jasmine’s fully-fleshed voluptuous nature while sacrificing none of its joy. It is a painting rendered by the loving hand of one who can navigate the terrain blindfolded (If you are not a jasmine devotee, my rantings may seem extreme; however, if you crave all the aspects, facets of a true jasmine soliflore and the sense of bien-être it proffers, you will fully appreciate my sentiment). Why is this so? Succinctly put, the finest materials in gifted hands yield veracity, and in this instance truth IS beauty. Jean-Claude Ellena’s jasmine is not petulant, frilly, frou-frou, gourmand; there is no need. What exists is an embarrassment of riches: the deft dash of clove to showcase jasmine’s spicy dimension, employment of tagetes (marigold) with its deliciously sweet, herbal fruitiness and dry, tenacious leathery undertone, a welcome elaboration upon a seemingly unstudied naturalness. This sort of sleight-of-hand is precisely the point – why fiddle with perfection?

Underscore the composition with a scrupulous choice of musk and photorealism assumes its own olfactory form. Do more brushstrokes improve a work of art? I’m somewhat at a loss for words; if Jasmin de Pays is an aquarelle, it is surely one which balances substantivity with delicacy, which is no mean feat. Maître Ellena has offered us his heart, his youth, his life’s experience unreservedly with the candor and artistry for which he is justly renowned. I, for one – am deeply grateful.

Notes: jasmine absolute, clove, tagetes, musk

  • Thank you so much Ida for the review! I’ve read about the name of this perfume in Esxence reports and I’ve been curious how JCE’s post-Hermès creations will be like. Your brilliant description makes this perfume sound amazing. I’d love to be able to discover this both substantive and delicate jasmine.
Thanks for the draw! I live in EU.

  • Jasmine is one of my favourite floral note in a fragrance right next to neroli and rose. Sounds really nice, thanks Ida for the review and thanks for the chance. I would love to try it, i am in the EU.

  • This sounds like the jasmine perfume of my dreams. Why can’t I find Perris MonteCarlo in more USA stores. I want the perfect jasmine and jasmin de Pays sound it. My lord Jean Claude Ellena

  • Thank you, Ida, for sharing your memories of Grasse and your impressions of M. Ellena’s new jasmine soliflore for Perris Monte Carlo. I appreciated Ida’s metaphor of a painting not being improved with extra brushstrokes to describe the elegant economy with which the perfume was created. I live in the US.

  • I loved how intimate Ida’s words were, and how deep hers and Maitre Ellena’s devotion and love to jasmine are. Indeed, I believe jasmine, as well as other “star” flowers such as rose, lilac, hyacinth, they don’t need many layers, tricks and touch-ups. They are glorious in their personal, unique nature. I personally don’t have jasmine in my soul, for I have never experienced it in a way rooted enough to develop a memory, a history or a perception. But I do have honeysuckle, which used to grow on the house walls of a dear friend of mine, and every summer, I would become inebriated with the smell of honeysuckle at dusk. Thank you for an intimate and touching review! I’m from EU.

  • Such a beautiful description! It makes me think of Grasse’s jasmine champs while the sun goes down. The review is a dream written into words as the perfume must be too. I live in the EU.

  • I love that Ida became a different person in Grasse so much so that her husband didn’t her, that is the power of Jasmine in the air! I would love to experience this tribute to Grasse in the form of this perfume! I am from USA!

  • “Perris Monte Carlo Jasmin de Pays is my Gold Standard forever jasmine; I doubt that I will ever need another. ” — oh yes! This is exactly what I have been looking for for such a long time! I’m a jasmine lover, however I think it is difficult to find the lively, lush, bold yet intricate and well executed one. I have great hopes for this perfume, would love to try it. Please add me to the list.
    I’m from Hungary (EU).

  • Jasmin de Pays has been on my mind since I first read Ida’s highlights of notables at Esxence, so very exciting! Jasmin was my first perfume love, and still holds a special place in my heart and on my perfume shelves. I grow different varieties of jasmine in my garden just to enjoy the fragrance. I am so very excited about Jasmin de Pays, thank you for the opportunity to win this gem! Live in the US.

  • fazalcheema says:

Ellena has created it and few people know Grasse as well as Ellena. Jasmin de Pays must be quite impressive. I am surprised Ellena was persuaded to create it because I thought he has mostly retired. I love well-developed Jasmine creations including Lutens Sarrasins and Al la Nuit. I am in US.

  • Jasmine, marigold, mixed with leather and clove? What’s not to like? I enjoyed the story behind the fragrance. Thanks for the draw, USA.

  • This evocative review has me dreaming of Jasmin, I have been searching for the perfect Jasmin fragrance and I believe Ida when she says she will need no other. Jasmin has a place in my heart, from the moment I was gifted a bracelet made of Jasmin buds it has been my soul flower.

  • As always Ida you are an outstanding wordsmith. I was so happy when you and Michelyn showed me this flamboyant beauty in Esxence two weeks ago and thankfully I have a sample of her. It was for me a highlight to smell real jasmine in all her magnificence with absolutely nothing hidden instead all her facets celebrated❤️ In this day and age of draconian restrictions smelling her gave me relief and hope knowing that the true art of Perfumery still exists. Yesterday I purchased myself a bottle of Perris Taif Absolute….another true beauty ❤️ I certainly look forward to smelling future offerings from this house from here on forth.

  • Damiana C says:

I truly enjoyed this review of this soliflore fragrance along with the beautiful pictures of the jasmine festivals in France. Jasmine is a classic and feminine flower that is always beautiful when featured as the star of a fragrance. I have heard much about this one and would love to try it. I live in the USA.

  • I love jasmine so this one is of great interest to me. The description of the natural aspects sound very nice. Thank you for the review.

  • helenlam says:

Oh this fragrance sounds so beautiful. I think Perris is an underappreciated house and this is a fragrance I’m looking forward to trying in person, especially that it is composed by Jean-Claude Ellena! I think I do have Jasmine in my soul… I’m eagerly awaiting the blooms under my windows to open in the very near future. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • Immediately I felt the warmth, fragrance and sunshine as I read Ida Meister’s reminiscence. I adore jasmine and try to have a plant blooming in my house most of the year – it’s heavenly during winter here in southeastern Connecticut. I’d love to try this Jasmin de Pays by Perris Monte Carlo.

  • Wonderful description Ida! Sounds like this might be the jasmine I have been looking for. Have heard about this brand, but I have never seen it in Australia, let alone a chance to try anything from this house. In my humble opinion, jasmine, osmanthus and boronia are the most difficult scents to capture in perfumery and I have not come across any perfumes that smell like these plants in my garden. Thank you for the draw.

  • Elizabeth T. says:

Yes! Jasmine is in my heart! It is often mixed with other white florals, and so it’s very hard to find a satisfying jasmine soliflore. How excited I was to read this… that now there is one and it had been composed by none other than Mssr. Ellena. This is wonderful news indeed, and Ida’s description is spot on. Thank you for this review and generous draw! I’m in the USA.

  • What a beautiful review! “Do more brushstrokes improve a work of art?” Ida’s prose makes this perfume come to life. I love jasmine and would love the opportunity to try this latest creation from Ellena. I am in the US.

  • roxhas1cat says:

I am most interested in this because Ida says it’s her Gold Standard forever jasmine. I loved how Ida feels that the Grasse region is where she is “home to roost”. That is how I feel when I am lucky enough to visit Santa Fe. I wondered if others felt that way about a particular place. I don’t believe I have jasmine in my soul…..yet. I am only a few years into my niche fragrance collecting, seems like I get hung up on a particular note, explore that, buy a few bottles, then try another note. I’d love to try this one!! I like their Nosy Be fragrance (obviously I’ve been through my patchouli phase). Thanks for the great read!! USA.

  • Crisstyyn says:

Jasmine…I could say one of the most wonderfull flowers in the world. I absolutely love Ida’s review and idea on what a wonderfull mise en scene for the Jasmine. That’s why i would absolutely love to try it ❤️ i am from UK

  • brindusa says:

I’ve often associated jasmine with a watercolor, but in Japanese style. This one has a kind of power. The description makes me think that the perfumer has managed to get the best out of the spirit of the place that is Grasse, because the perfume formula evolved inside him, with him. Grasse is not a piece of his soul, is the core, the hard core. I have to admit that, besides the successful review, the comment of another perfumer, an artist like Sultan Pasha, also contributes to my curiosity to try this fragrance. I am from the EU

  • Loredana O says:

The Ida’s description is beautiful, as usual!!! By this description of Grasse’s jasmine champs it makes me think to my childhood. The jasmine is one of my favourite flowers and, of course, one of my favourite notes.
    I live in EU.

  • NiceVULady says:

I do have a jasmine soul. Jasmine grows in my garden and spreads its perfume throughout the days and nights of spring. I love Ida’s review because it is so heartfelt. If something is her “gold stand forever,” by golly it must be good. Thank you for a genuinely beautiful review and a generous draw. I’m in the USA

  • Oh, I soo understand that Ida has been struck that way by the new Perris’ Jasmine!
    Really a masterpiece of equilibrium.
My Jasmine in your soul? Maybe A la nuit.
I live in Italy. Thanks for the draw!

  • What a wonderful review!! I have had the same experience regarding how a city can change a person’s aura upon arrival… for me it is Barcelona…Jasmine is such a gorgeous flower / scent with my gold standard being the sleek deadly Sarrasins… if Ida says Perris Monte Carlo ( with Mr Ellena) created a masterpiece- I will gladly believe her… Thank you for the draw… I live in EU

  • Dubaiscents says:

I love how Ida transports you back to her first trips to Grasse and how she actually transforms when she is surrounded by such beauty and scent. If she thinks this perfume captures all of that then I know it is a must try! Thank you for the opportunity! I am in the US.

  • This small star-shaped flower has a not only floral but “sensual and disturbing” scent. I love his perfume especially this season, as it has an extremely relaxing effect and knowing that the maximum of its perfume releases it in the night makes me adore it even more. I love all the fragrances of Perris and I am sure that this is also a masterpiece.
    Linda – Italy

  • bigscoundrel says:

Jasmin de Pays sounds like a wonderful blend of jasmine, marigold, and cloves. I hope I win this one. I need more jasmine in my soul. In the USA.

  • fleurdetilleul says:

Jasmine and marigold (first time seeing it as tagetes – sorry, English is not my mother language – learnt something new today, thanks Ida!) are among my favourite floral notes! This fragrance sounds like it has the potential to be a love of mine. I live in EU.

  • lilacdays says:

Beautiful, beautiful review! I loved reading the experience in Grasse and how this olfactory journey produced a change in behavior.
As a jasmine lover myself, it truly resonated with me.
I’ve recently started growing a jasmine plant and when it blooms the scent is absolutely intoxicating.

Many thanks for this generous draw. I live in France

  • recursivemask says:

I have jasmine in my soul. I love when I get a chance to smell it in the gardens around me, rare as that is, because it is such a beautiful flower. Your review makes this sound like an amazing flower, and I sincerely hope that I get a chance to receive this. I’m in the US.

  • Doni Light says:

You know, everytime someone mentions Jasmine, my mind goes straight to the Disney princess – and yes, she’s definitely in my soul. lol Aside from JCE composing some of my favourite perfumes of all-time, I’ve always said that the richness of any fragrance comes from the quality of materials. Very interested to experience what that jasmine-clove combination is like, since that’s a new one for me. Also loved Ida’s quip to her husband about Grasse – just another reason not to dismiss what your wife tells you. lol Methinks there may be an other-life connection there. Unconscious physiological changes are usually a dead giveaway. USA

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Oh this sounds divine! I love Jasmine so much. The dash of clove is what really intrigues me with this one. Beautiful review. I can tell this one is a real stunner. I am in the US.

  • Ida’s saying that she would change when she got to Grasse put a big smile on my face. I would love to try Jasmin de Pays, not only because it’s Ida’s *holy grail* jasmine but also because it is created by Jean-Claude Ellena. I love all the white flowers. In the US.

  • saadfragrance says:

No1 jean claude ellena is one of my favorite perfumers of all time.
No2 i adore jasmine when its done right and i trust Ellena especially the description makes it seem so interesting and amazing
Would love to win this and wear this , from the EU

  • I’m not sure which has me more ensorcelled: Ida’s spectacular writing or what is, I gather, a spectacular Ode to Jasmine. Either way, it’s a win! Thank you for this unexpected – therefore more appreciated! – pleasure from a Dane. Who Loves Jasmine.

  • I may go a bit against the tide here, but I think that it is not the place, Grasse, but rather the incredible olfactory properties of this plant that make it so magical. Countries like Indonesia, Pakistan and the Philippines name it their national flower and it contributed to the cultures of these peoples far before France adopted it.
With that being said, I can understand that JCE draws his briliant perfume interpretations from his personal experiences of growing up in the region of Grasse, and I have a deep respect for his style.
I love jasmine and I tried to collect perfumes that hold this note, I would be very happy to try this one as well. I live in the Netherlands.

  • Thank you, Ida for this review.
If for this perfume’s creation Mr. Ellena his heart, his youth his life experience as wrote Ida, so this perfume will be miracle.
    I like jasmine very much.

  • lightgray says:

oh, this is a gorgeous review – one that made me desperate to visit Grasse, and to reconsider jasmine. when i was growing up in china, there were street vendors selling jasmine clips or threaded into bracelets, and i still remember how lovely they were, how rich into the night. i’m in the us, and i’d love to try jean claude ellena’s take on this elusive flower.

  • strangedim says:

I love “the sense of bien-être” I felt in every word of the review. And yes, jasmine has a special place in my soul. Sending you my regards from Romania, EU.

  • I am intrigued by Ida’s description, especially this part when she said that this jasmine has spice dimensions with the help of clove, smeetnes from marigold and leathery side.
I like Ellena creations so much, and hope I will like this too
    USA

  • Oh… I love jasmine very much. And Jasmin de Pays sounds incredibly good. I have never had a chance to try anything from Perris Monte Carlo, yet. The review is also wonderfully. Thank you for the draw. I live in EU.

  • samppahoo says:

I loved the simplicity of both this perfume and the description in the review. I think less is often more in perfumery and I am sure this release supports that. I did not experience jasmine too much in perfumes, but I am looking forward for that to change, with Jasmin du Pays. Thanks for the draw! From Finland.

  • JozefJak says:

Yes, jasmine is incredible note, it has so many variations of smell from animalic to etheric. Jasmine is second after lily of the valley my white floral note. Great review and thanks for the draw! I live in Poland

  • Uncle1979 says:

Interesting review – combination of notes is a bit unusual – jasmine, marigold and also sweet, herbal and Leathery. Looks like it will be one of those ” what the … is this? ” reading the notes, and “what a great smell ” after the first spray.
Thank you Ida for your review
Yes I like jasmine, if it’s not some crazy indolic bomb.
    USA

  • gtabasso says:

I love this house but have not tried this one. The idea of a jasmine festival intrigues me. I have been to lavender festivals. But, jasmine? Oh swoon. yes, I have skank in my soul. In the USA.

  • What a beautiful description by Ida, I enjoyed reading about her experiences. Yes, I have jasmine in my soul. It’s one of my favorites.
    I live in USA.

  • Many thanks for this review! I loved how you described your experiences im Grasse – now i know i want to visit it really badly! And at least i got some parts of jasmin in my body, since i drink jasmin-green tea at least once a week since many years. But not sure if i ever smelled the flower in reality.

    Living in EU, Germany

  • I do enjoy the scent if jasmines and sounds like the jasmines in Grasse are to experience. Heard great things about Jean Claude Ellena. Would like to try this out. Thanks, US

  • Thank you Ida for your beautiful and evocative review. I particularly loved your description of how Mr Ellena has evoked ‘jasmine’s fully-fleshed voluptuous nature while sacrificing none of its joy’. Jasmine-centric perfumes I have encountered mostly present the fresher, transparent aspects of jasmine, and I would be very keen to experience a perfume that celebrates the more true, fully-fleshed, animalistic nature of this heady flower. I have jasmine in my soul, but at a remove, as someone who lives in a cool climate and who longs to be transported to an ‘other’, luminous, lush, and densely-scented place. I live in EU – Ireland.

  • IvanVelikov says:

Never been to Grasse , but this review was really nice , plus everybody knows Jean-Claude Ellena .

“Perris Monte Carlo Jasmin de Pays is my Gold Standard forever jasmine; I doubt that I will ever need another.”
    Wow
Jasmin de Pays sounds really good – floral , sweet , a bit herbal with some touches of leather . It’s obvious Ida loves this fragrance , and not just trying to push it to Cafleurebon readers .
Yes i do have jasmine in my soul – Jasmin de Nuit The Different Company is a staple in my collection .
    Thank you all

  • d3m0lici0n says:

Wow! Sounds incredible. This review makes it sound like it is the perfect Jasmine fragrance.
And to be composed by JC Elllena!
I thought he retired from perfume industry but happy to see he didn’t!
Thanks for this amazing draw. I live in the US

  • Jasmine De Pays sounds like it’s bespoke perfume made for my girlfriend. Not only she loves jasmine and marigold fragrances , she does have one with both called Jasmine Sambac & Marigold made by Jo Malone. I’m 100% sure she’ll love Jasmine De Pays just as much.
If I happen to be the winner I’ll give her the bottle.
Personally I do not have Perris Monte Carlo fragrances , but I know Cacao Azteque well. My future brother in law bathes in it haha. Smell like hot Mexican chocolate – it’s really good.
    Thanks for the giveaway

It is thrilling to discover a gold standard, forever fragrance. I loved reading Ida’s recollection of traveling in Grasse and how it made her new and whole. I think this review is a lovely tribute to the artistry of Maitre Ellena. I’m not sure if I have jasmine in my soul. I certainly love the flower in nature, but I’m only beginning to appreciate it as a fragrance.
    I live in the USA.

  • The basket of Jasmine must be incredible! Perris Monte Carlo Jasmin de Pays must be an aroma that I would love to try. I love Ida’s reviews and especially things like Her gold standard forever Jasmine. Thank you for the chance. USA

  • I like the review from Ida with words like the fragrance balances substantivity with delicacy. I do have love and yes jasmine in my soul. I live in USA, CA. One Love.

Jasmine and marigold ? I love when some houses throw some curveballs at us.
Not familiar with this one to be honest , but i’ve sampled most from the brand , and imo Bois d‘Oud is by far the best one i know, and a must have for me for the late autumn-winter season.

Ida’s review definitely caught my attention.
    I’m a jasmine lover, so…
The way she described the transitions and facets of the jasmine in this beauty is really inspiring.
The floral nuance that leaves place to a more spicy and leathery undertone sound just delightful.
Jasmine is part of my soul for sure haha.
I’m from US and would like to join this draw please.
    Thank you! 🙂

  • This perfume must be fantastic : delicate, natural, magnificent. Thank you for the review. I live in EU.

  • There are a few places on this planet that are truly magical and Grasse is among the most affecting. Thank you Ida for such a lovely elucidation of how the singualr alchemy of Grasse’s physicality can touch one’s soul. I’m a long time devotee of the enchanting works of Jean Claude Ellena and a more recent adorer of the exceptional scents fostered by Gian Carlo Perris. Like Salem, I don’t have jasmine in my soul. Yet as Jasmin Du Pays lies at the center of the intersection between my favorite écrivain des odeurs, most respected fragrance writer and the House I revere for excellence, it immediately rises to first place on my must experience list!

  • I am a fan of white florals, especially jasmine. Even the indolic varieties are lovely to my nose. I enjoyed the articel very much, especially Mr Ellena’s backstory as a child when he harvested jasmine and roses with his grandmother… such beautiful memories for him that have lasted a lifetime. I live in KY, USA.

  • Ooh, how I love jasmine fragrances! And I really like that the notes are simple, making jasmine the star note in it. But I really like that clove is part of the composition. A spicy jasmine fragrance is my favorite!
    I live in the US.

  • Awe, Jasmin! The scent to waft away unsmiling moods, heavy heartedness and the like. I am always looking for the one Jasmin fragrance that fills the void and does not leave you longing for another lover. I am in the US. Thanks, Ida for yet another personal review, and to Perris Monte Carlo for the draw.

  • I think: ❤️ JCE, ❤️ Grasse ❤️ Jasmine when sprinkled over its streets, ❤️ Rose du Mai and since having a chance to sniff both I can’t stop thinking about them. Such a generous giveaway! Sending hugs to Ida and Cafleurebon team, Elena

  • Master perfumer, lovely notes , enjoyable review = must sample for me.
Proud owner of Absolue d’Osmanthe Extrait. I can’t describe how much I love this fragrance. To be honest it was a gift-it’s really expensive. I know some other offerings by Perris Monte Carlo – Bois d’Oud , Cacao Azteque and Oud Imperial.
Thanks to all involved in this draw.
