Heirloom Elixirs #7 DSH Perfumes Sharkskin review

The Rat Pack. 007. Film Noir private dicks. Ever since the 1950s, sharkskin suits have been the epitome of masculine chic. With the right pair of Ray-Bans, a cocked fedora and a dry martini waiting somewhere nearby, the favored suit of everyone from Dean Martin to Don Draper made men look classy while cool. Sharkskin, the newest addition to DSH Perfumes’ limited-edition Heirloom Elixir collection, channels the dapper feel of the classic sharkskin into an old-school fougere updated with a bit of fizz and flower. The resulting citrus-lavender-mock orange cologne, with leafy, mossy glints, fits the sultry weather as perfectly as a notched Savile Row jacket on Cary Grant.

Grace Kelly begins work January 19, 1956 with Frank Sinatra on “High Society”, the last movie she’ll make before her scheduled wedding shortly after Easter to Prince Rainier III of Monaco. (AP Photo)

DSH Perfumes Sharkskin has a perfectly pitched middle between the lavender-herbal feel of a vintage barbershop fougere and a modern, tangy floral. And that’s how Dawn Spencer Hurwitz intended it: “In my perfect fantasy, this is the scent that both Frank Sinatra AND Grace Kelly are wearing to be cool as a cucumber, the picture of elegance, and ever so fresh in the heat of the NYC summer, circa 1956.” The use of civet, oakmoss, and ambergris summon echoes of fragrances that were popular when sharkskin suits were at their height, and they give Sharkskin a subtle retro quality. But this is balanced by a fresh, generous helping of lime, aldehydes, lemon and petitgrain sharpens the composition, providing a vibrant, brash contrast to the sturdier notes.

Somewhere in the middle, I become aware of the gorgeously soft richness of mock orange – a woefully underused note – and soapy, creamy neroli, which float to the surface like scattered petals on still water. There’s a just a touch of rose lurking in the background that accentuates the gentle flowery sweetness as time goes on. But before you start thinking Sharkskin has become a  feminine floral, the tartness of citrus and herbaceous lavender are still right where they were, underpinning the more bloomy notes with enough fougere suaveness to make this fragrance stay squarely between traditional feminine and masculine scents.

There’s a bit of light, clean musk and sandalwood in the dry-down, which add a bit of texture, but the balance of fougere and floral remains deft throughout. If you’re looking for something other than the usual run of summery citrusy florals and barbershop colognes, DSH Perfumes Sharkskin is an easy-to-wear, debonair fragrance that whistles jauntily in the hottest, stickiest weather. It’s one cool drink of water, daddio.

Notes: Mock orange (accord), Tahitian lime, ambergris, Australian sandalwood, brown oakmoss, civet, green oakmoss, musk, Tunisian neroli, Turkish rose otto, leafy green (accord), aldehydes, bergamot, espirit de lavande, lavender flower, lemon, petitgrain.

OMG, what about this does NOT appeal?! Fromt eh vintage invocations to the herbacious lavender with tinges of the animalic, if it”s half as good as it sounds it will be a favorite. I’m dying to try it.

  • What I appreciate in DSH’s fragrances is the vintage quality conveyed in each creation, while maintaining a modern spin. This is certainly the case for her animalic scents, so I am pleased to see the use of civet here. This fragrance has a uniquely beautiful name and seems to perfectly blend retro and innovative features. Of the Heirloom Elixirs, I own White Rabbits. I live in the USA.

  • My dear neighbor, Ann, had a mock orange tree. The blooms were beautifully scented. I would love to try this fragrance, thanks for the opportunity! USA

  • I’m enticed by the promise of, “…the lavender-herbal feel of a vintage barbershop fougere and a modern, tangy floral”. Not yet tried any Heirloom Elixirs US

“DSH Perfumes Sharkskin has a perfectly pitched middle between the lavender-herbal feel of a vintage barbershop fougere and a modern, tangy floral.” This sounds utterly perfect. I wanna ride with the rat pack this summer!

I live in New York. Sounds like it’s on the money.

I don’t need to be entered into the draw, because I was actually just in Boulder the other week and picked up a bottle after trying it and falling hard! This review definitely captures the lovely dualities of it–fresh, but with substance, retro-nouveau, floral-herbal. Since I enjoy animalics, I wish those notes were even a bit more prominent, but as is they add a nice heft and depth to the scent and definitely help the floral herbal come together and last. Going to treasure my bottle and, as far as I’ve seen, it works nicely in heat and in cooler weather. I hope whoever wins this enjoys it as much as I do!

  • I’ve never smelled a unisex fougere before. the fragrance is alreay quite unique for sure. and it contains that coveted note of oakmoss …(commenting from FL, USA)

This sounds amazing. The review had me hooked at “Rat Pack”! I love fougeres and the idea of a modern take on it with these listed notes sounds wonderful.

  • Lauryn’s review makes me think this fragrance would the perfect signature scent: classy and modern. Sharkskin sounds fresh, rich and complex. Would love to try this fragance. I’m in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

  • Thank you for the review and the giveaway. This sounds rather intriguing and not because of the Frank Sinatra idea (I didn’t like Creed’s Bois De Portugal which he was said to wear) but because of the interplay of the notes. I’m in TX USA

What appeals to me is the retro sound of this. Particularly the eau de cologne type of notes paired with some animalic nuances. Sounds like it’s in the vein of Monsieur de Givenchy or something like that
I;m in the US. And I havent tried any from this house. Thanks for the draw

  • When the writer mentions that both Frank Sinatra and Grace Kelly could have worn Sharkskin Heirloom #7 easily, it got me thinking about the nature of real sharkskin from sharks, the textile, and human skin. All have a somewhat matte sheen and they seem smooth. But when you touch them, a texture is revealed. Also I love that this is not a citrus-focused fragrance and especially love the animalic accords. I’m wearing vintage Caron Narcisse Noir extrait and recently acquired a bottle of Crown Rose — Both fresh florals with natural animalics, and perfect for summer. None of your frikkin’ freshies for me!

Recently, I had the chance to sample several of Dawn Spencer Hurwitz’ rose-focused fragrances as well as the memorable (to me) Eau de Trianon. I look forward to smelling Sharkskin Heirloom #7 and hope I’m the one you pick! Thanks for a great review.

  • Elizabeth T. says:

She had me at Frank Sinatra and Grace Kelly. I love the name and the notes! I haven’t had a chance to try any of the heirloom fragrances. A great review!! And thank you for this generous draw. I’m in the USA.

  • I love babershop fougere’s! This sounds like a unique spin on such fragrances. I have not yet tried anything from DSH. Right now MDCI is king to me with Invasion Barbare, and has made me want to try more in this type of fragrance. Thank you for the draw. NY, US.

  • Well, I loved all those movies of the 60s as teenager, and the middle between classical fouler and some florals and citrus’s sounds exactly like something I would very much enjoy.
I have never tried any Heirloom Elixir, nor anything of Dawn Spencer Hurwitz

  • Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. Wins the game right there. There’s something classic and universal about this kind of citrus-lavender combination, but I’m sure this particular fragrance would give it a subtle twist. I have never tried any of the Heirloom Elixirs. I am from the EU.

  • I love the description of a vintage-inspired scent that both Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra would wear. I had to look up “mock orange”, and am now fascinated to try a fragrance with this note. I’m in the US.

  • Sharkskin…now that’s an awesome perfume name. Great review, “from Dean Martin to Don Draper”, wohooo…i’m all in! I would love to test such a nice juice, greetings from Romania.

  • Having something different to wear in summer appeals to me. As does the fact that Frank Sinatra and Grace Kelly both could wear it and be cool. I have not tried any of the Heirloom Elixirs but would love to try this one. From CT USA.

I have not smelled the heirloom collection, I am certainly not staying up to date lately. A modern tangy floral, this sounds interesting. A fresh scent to keep you cool as a cucumber in the NYC heat……brilliant timing of this article with the heatwave. I’d love to give this a whirl. USA (in the only part of the country not experiencing a heat wave).

One of the lines of this review really stands out for me,” The resulting citrus-lavender-mock orange cologne, with leafy, mossy glints, fits the sultry weather as perfectly as a notched Savile Row jacket on Cary Grant.” I can just image what this fragrance must me like, and its a wow. Thanks for a wonderful review. DSH fragrances are amazing. Thanks for a generous draw. I’m in the USA

I am a huge fan of late 50s and early 60s US television programs, especially the old variety shows. I can watch over and over again Frank Sinatra appearing on the Dina Shore show, singing a medley of their hits like “Tea for Two” and “All of Me.” I love that that Sharkskin pays homage to this period, to icons like Frank Sinatra and Grace Kelly. I just love reading about Dawn’s sources of inspiration. I haven’t tried any of the Heirloom Elixirs yet.

  • Wow what a great review and what a wonderful title for a perfume sharkskin.. looking forward to try this retro quality scent. Living in the EU

“wearing to be cool as a cucumber, the picture of elegance, and ever so fresh in the heat of the NYC summer” Omg, I want to be cool as a cucumber!! Who doesnt? I have never tried Heirloom Elixirs, but now im dying to. Sending love from Romania

  • Yowzers, look at that note list. I’m a sucker for a frag that can sneak civet into the note list. This review really helped me wrap my head around the note breakdown, a floral fougere. Delicious! I have not tried anything from this house before. Canada.

  • Wow, what a name and the inspiration. The description: “old-school fougere updated with a bit of fizz and flower” and the monumental notes breakdown suggesting something really unusual. I’m dying to try this one. It seems to be a BIG scent for the REAL Goodfellas. Thank you for a draw. I live in Poland.
