DSH Perfumes La Rose Béatifique Review (Dawn Spencer Hurwitz) 2021+ June Roses No.1 Draw

La Rose Beautifique by DSH Perfumes review

DSH Perfumes La Rose Béatifique (and Damasq no.2) were inspired by roses from Dawn Spencer Hurwitz’s Gardephoto by Dawn

A single flow’r he sent me, since we met.
All tenderly his messenger he chose;
Deep-hearted, pure, with scented dew still wet—
One perfect rose.

I knew the language of the floweret;
“My fragile leaves,” it said, “his heart enclose.”
Love long has taken for his amulet
One perfect rose. ~ Dorothy Parker, One Perfect Rose

DSH Perfumes Damask and La Rose Beatifique reviews

Rose study by DSH Perfumes Instagram

Award-winning artisan perfumer Dawn Spencer Hurwitz  draws inspiration from her garden every year; she cherishes the several varieties of rose which bloom anew in June. We share that rose veneration, the intoxication of burying one’s face amidst velvety petals while being regaled by each perfume that suffuses the senses. There can never be enough roses to satisfy this lust. I have smelt many rose substitutes which are pretty – but to my mind, nothing makes my head swim like real rose concretes, absolutes, ottos, distillations. That’s why I’m thrilled that Dawn chose to utilize an all-natural palette for her June roses: each fragrance develops and evolves over the sweet unfolding of time. I may be out of step, but I’m happiest when my chosen fragrances become my travel companions; when we embark upon a journey, sit around a campfire (or in a meadow, a forest, a desert, a garden) and share the telling of tales. The first two perfumes, La Rose Béatifique (No.1) and Damasq (No.2) are an absolute (sic) joy: full of depth and nuance, they each reveal a different narrative. I literally flipped a coin in order to determine which one to review, and it landed on La Rose Béatifique.

DSH Perfumes La Rose Béatifique encompasses a wide spectrum of facets regarding this particular rose’s character: she is dewy, fruity, fleshy, buttery, plump with ionones and damascones – also known as rose ketones. She is limpid without being watery-thin, fresh but not sharp. I experience her as a full-blown Debutante Rose – womanly enough to possess curves and charm, yet beautiful in an untrammeled way, not yet having evolved into a mysterious, worldly being. La Rose Béatifique is warmhearted and frolicsome, youthful and unfettered.

Beautiful Pink rose

Pink Rose by Michelyn

Perfumer Dawn Spencer Hurwitz’s catalyst was her garden’s myriad pink roses: all unadulterated happiness and good cheer, smiling with their violet and berry tones, the barest hint of cinnamon spice and pink peppercorn. Ripe, fruity jamminess is summoned by marvelous French melanges of raspberry and strawberry, cognac absolute, and a plethora of exquisite roses and rose amplifiers – rose geranium, palmarosa, Bulgarian rose absolute and otto, Turkish rose, rosa damascena and centifolia. Grandiflorum jasmine cosies up to them in a most complimentary manner, while a natural violet flower accord underlines the presence of ionones in both rose and violet. Fresh notes are imparted by green tea absolute, neroli and violet leaf (as well as cognac); fleshiness is insinuated by butter CO2. Dawn’s mastery of materials assures that these elements are seamlessly incorporated into her own unique tapestry.

DSH Perfumes La Rose Béatifique rests atop a very subtle anchoring base of orris and ambrette, a natural musk accord, Australian sandalwood, and smatterings of labdanum, myrrh gum, frankincense CO2, green oakmoss and Siam benzoin. I refer to them as discreet because it wouldn’t take much for such materials to dominate the fragrance – and they never do; instead, these elements serve to add depth, tenacity and intimate liaison with the perfume as a whole entity. Dawn’s June Roses trilogy illustrates what an all-natural palette can achieve in the right hands – and I look forward to No.3. I would encourage you to sample these if you are rose mad as I am – or if you simply crave beauty. They won’t disappoint.

Notes: bergamot, pink peppercorn, butter CO2, green tea absolute, cognac, cinnamon bark, raspberry melange, strawberry melange, Tunisian neroli, Egyptian rose geranium, palmarosa, Bulgarian rose absolute, Bulgarian rose otto, Turkish rose otto, rosa damascena absolute, rosa centifolia absolute, grandiflorum jasmine, natural violet flower accord, violet leaf absolute, orris concrete, ambrette, Australian sandalwood, frankincense CO2, myrrh gum, green oakmoss, labdanum natural musk accord, Siam benzoin

Samples kindly provided by the perfumer – I love them.  My nose is my own…

6 lines in, and I KNEW who’s art I was reading!! Another heart-achingly beautiful #idaesque review!…. and I lost myself in it, completely; and in it’s spectacular, disarming charm – once again!….

  • Another beautiful review by Ida. Her comparison of the perfume and a debutante’s womanly innocence was so evocative. I live in the US. Thank you Cafleurebon, Ida, and DSH.

More beautiful writing about beautiful perfumes from Ida! I am such a fan girl, as I’m sure she realizes. And I’m a fan girl of rose and Dawn Spencer-Hurwitz. This fragrance is filled with notes I adore and adore together ~ I started to type some but the whole list is luscious! I am intrigued by the butter note! In Maine, USA (where the wild roses are in bloom)!

  • My mouth watered as I read Ida’s description. I speak from experience when I say creating a rose soliflore with this many materials requires an extremely deft hand. DSH continues to amaze and raise the bar.

  • What appeals to me is how Ida sums it up, “happiness and good cheer”. The notes of roses upon roses, cheerful jamminess, complimentary flowers and a dash of cinnamon-pepper sounds just like that!

Things are quite bleak here in Global South around the equator – the rain feels melancholic somehow. Just reading the review gives me the joy of sunny garden full of roses!

    I’m based in Thailand! 😀

  • I absolutely love rose in my fragrances and from what I’ve smelled of the house, I think this is a definite winner. Ida beautifully reviewed the fragrance, hopefully I’ll get to try it. I live in Croatia, EU.

I love reviews about rose fragrances. To me, a rose note feels completely different in each fragrance. I live in Romania

  • Seems to be delightfully watery and poetic, Thanks for the review and the draw, from EU!

  • I am Rose mad and love beauty I also love DSH perfumes and have not tried one yet I don’t love.
I would love to try this and an all naturals palette appeals. I am in U.K.

A review by Ida and a DSH fragrance, it’s a real power couple. Super lovely and evocative review, and so timely to release a rose series for June- they’re everywhere right now. This one sounds beautiful- I’m a big fan of fruity and berry notes in rose. I’m in the US.

  • jmmcmenamin says:

“I’m happiest when my chosen fragrances become my travel companions”… what a lovely sentiment! Located in Louisiana, USA.

  • I truly enjoy Ida’s reviews. I have not had the pleasure of owning one of Dawn’s fragrances, but they are on my list. I even follow her on IG. I have been seeing her roses for a little while now. In Maryland.

  • snowflake15 says:

I can smell the garden roses, wet with dew as the sun is rising from your description. I love Reises and this perfume sounds like I need it. Thank you! USA

  • I’ve never smelled a real rose absolute, concrete, or an otto. I would love to, especially since I have yet to smell a rose that I have fallen in love with. I know roses are very complex so I would like to understand the natural scent better. Hopefully this will help me to appreciate them more. I love Ida’s description of DSH La Rose Beatifique as a “unique tapestry.” Her use of descriptive adjectives always put me right with her smelling the fragrance alongside her. Thanks for the review. In the USA.

  • After having read from Ida’s review, I get the impression that if I familiarized myself with Dawn’s fragrance releases, then that would be an educational way of familiarizing myself with how, and when, to use certain ingredients. I haven’t tried any of Dawn’s releases yet and I’d like to try a lot of rose-centric fragrances that I would like, and I think that this fragrance would help me with both of those things. It also sounds like some of the ingredients in the base of this fragrance would make it resinous and long-lasting. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • roxhas1cat says:

If this is making Ida’s head swim I want to try. The notes sound divine. A perfect time to release a perfect rose scent!! Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • Thanks again Ida for another review and draw! I enjoyed the description of the notes in their subtlety – how they add depth without dominating. Such a good way of describing certain notes, and also makes me want to try this fragrance for sure. Happy to read, from Canada!

  • I really enjoy Ida’s reviews, and I share with her the love for roses. Any scent made by Dawn Spencer-Hurwitz is gorgeous and Ida knows how to translate thef eeling that DSH´s heart gets when she smell the June roses for the first time: not easy to bring that emotion to letters and to a perfume. An all-natural rose soliflore to share with us her garden’s myriad pink roses… A bouquet of exquisite roses and rose amplifiers with the amazing violet to bring out all the facets regarding the rose ’s character. I live in Spain, EU

  • I love Ida’s repurposing of the Dorothy Parker poem – most known for its sarcastic turn at the end – to frame this unusual and bohemian rose perfume.

I live in Toronto, Canada, where the roses are in full bloom this week!

  • Like Ida and Dawn, I too relish the fresh roses in June. Rose Beatifique sounds absolutely amazing. I am always on the search for the perfect rose, knowing Dawn’s talent, this is one I have to try. I live in the US.

  • Ida once again enthralled us with her wonderfully weaved description. This “dewy, fruity, fleshy, buttery” rose, which is not a child, not yet a woman and neither a pristine genderless angel nor a femme fatale, sounds like it has reached a perfect balance.
Once again Ms. Spencer Hurwitz elaborated a very complex pyramid, out of which the raspberry and strawberry, the cognac accord and the subtle grounding notes of labdanum, myrrh and frankincense sound delightful.
I am in Europe and would love to have the chance to try la Rose Beatifique.
    Thank you!

  • LightOfJoy says:

One can tell that Ida has as great of a love for rose as Dawn does, it shows in the writing. The descriptions of the characteristics of the flower and the perfume made me feel like I was experiencing them, particularly the part about planting one’s face in a bunch and huffing them deeply. It’s true, there’s just nothing that compares.

I’m excited to smell an all natural composition with the ingredients listed. I’ve never tried a DSH perfume before, but I’m very intrigued by D.S.H. herself and the passion that she exudes when she talks about her creations.

    I live in Texas, USA.

  • wandering_nose says:

Ida’s style is truly outstanding and it manages to charm me every single time. I love the abundance of impressive notes gracefully supporting but not overshadowing the rose aspect of the fragrance. DSH perfumes seem special, I would love to try them in depth. Thank you from Ireland, EU

  • GennyLeigh says:

As a main note, rose has so many facets. You can create a sultry, dark rose, a spicy, citrus rose or the fresh, cheerful rose. La Rose Beatifique sounds like a wonderful representative of the third category. An all natural composition sounds really interesting and the supporting notes are impressive. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • Great review. I don’t have much experience with all natural perfumery, but I am a rose fanatic in all its forms. Thanks for the draw. From Canada.

  • glowquest_ says:

Beautiful review Ida! And this sounds like a rose I would really enjoy, I never thought of myself as a rose lover but recently I’ve been finding more and more that I absolutely love. This sounds like it has all the depth and character without becoming overwhelming which I appreciate! Thanks for the chance, NY, US.

  • If this smells as much of real roses as all that, I’m in danger of falling in love with it. I felt real excitement reading this. (And there’s butter!) (USA)

  • Joanne Delaney says:

dewy, fruity, fleshy, buttery, plump- All the senses engaged. I live in the UK.

  • Great review by Ida as usual. What a long list of notes in DSH Perfumes La Rose Béatifique. Like the well-balanced nature of t his perfume, as Ida describes thusly: “I refer to them as discreet because it wouldn’t take much for such materials to dominate the fragrance – and they never do; instead, these elements serve to add depth, tenacity and intimate liaison with the perfume as a whole entity. Dawn’s June Roses trilogy illustrates what an all-natural palette can achieve in the right hands”. No experience with DSH yet, hope to some day. Writing from the USA.

Thank you for such a beautiful review Ida.

I love reading reviews about DSH perfumes, because they always showcase her inspiration of the natural beauty around her. This review does a fantastic job exposing the depth to which DSH seeks to replicate the natural beauty of a rose.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Roses, Roses, everywhere! I love them and after reading Ida’s great words, she loves them too. If Dawn is doing a June rose trilogy, please count me in. I enjoy Ida’s descriptions of” dewy, fruity, fleshy, buttery, plump” roses. USA
