Canadian native Creative Director Jane Daly of Daly Beauty has been a part of the perfume and beauty scene for years. Jane has been a model, an expert consultant for Dove, an online contributor for Lucky magazine, and has worked in the industry on several levels; she’s a popular beauty blogger whom people turn to for advice. Jane and I first ‘met’ one another through the well-known online fragrance fora of Makeup Alley and Basenotes in 2007 – where she was known as 3xasif. When Jane offered to send me a sample of her green floral chypre EAU DE JANE, I was thrilled. With the pandemic, however, it took a while to get things rolling – but here we are at last.

The concept for Daly Beauty EAU DE JANE actually began percolating seven years ago. Jane has always gravitated towards  green perfumes (Vent Vert is her absolute favorite), and her intent was to create a universal scent memory: the green grass of childhood, the sunny benediction upon dandelions, clover; an ensuing sojourn into the woods, where cool streams flow over stones (her fragrance was initially to be all natural). After 5 ½ years of working with a perfumer, the module was spot on, smelling three-dimensional – but it didn’t feel grounded, until she recalled a perfume critic noting that the best perfume ‘has a natural heart and a synthetic spine’.

Over the period which followed, Jane suffered two devastating losses – that of her father and her brother. It was then that she decided that her fragrance needed a larger concept, a more metaphysical one. Conversations with her dying father were profound and philosophical, including recollections of happiest times spent in the Laurentian mountains en famille. To evoke this, synthetic means were required – the employment of Iso E Super® (IFF) provided a note which could, in turn – smell both cool and musky or warm and woody.  The ghost of a cool mineral hue redolent of running water over granite, maple and leafy green was also present.

Daly Beauty EAU DE JANE is a neo-classically structured modern green floral chypre possessed of a vintage sensibility; I think of it as a cosmic chypre.  It unfolds with a luscious sweet/tart citrus bouquet of top notes as olfactory introduction: lime and bergamot for that requisite tang; mandarin and tangerine are fulsomely juicy. The fragrance’s voluptuous heart heralds fearless floralcy as indolic blossoms blend with spicy and creamy ones. The verdant coup, however – is a judicious splash of galbanum, sage and violet leaf – each contributing its particular charm. Galbanum, with its beautiful resinous, slightly bitter edginess for piquancy and sophistication; violet leaf’s coolly limpid, vegetal/mineral earthiness; and sage, which proffers bittersweet, heady herbal/floral/musky tones caressed with subtle haylike nuance. These touches remind me of the perfect seasoning of a dish – they highlight, contrast, provide intrigue to something which is already lovely in it own right, without causing undue distraction. By the time we reach the perfume’s foundation pillars we are ready for the plenty which awaits: every possible component one might wish for in a chypric base. Richly-hued, it is well-balanced and just weighty enough to achieve its aim, never overbearingly dominant. Additional green echoes arise from vetiver and moss, a deft soupçon of amber compliments musk; patchouli, oud and sandalwood help comprise a sylvan aura. Iso E Super® is a velvet chameleon – cedar-y, suggestive of ambergris, with floral undertones – which enriches the base notes with subtlety and imbues tenacity.

EAU DE JANE is very much a contemporary fragrance, but it is not a ‘beast’: in keeping with its level of equipoise and finesse, it clings closer to the flesh with a moderate projection and good longevity. I smile as I sniff: there exist tendrils which honor Jane Daly’s first scent memory of her mother’s houndstooth-checked flacon of Miss Dior. And that’s a terrific resonance.

Notes: Mandarin, lime, bergamot, tangerine, galbanum, rose, jasmine, neroli, ylang-ylang, carnation, violet leaf, sage, vetiver moss, amber, musk, oud, patchouli, sandalwood, Iso E Super® (IFF)

N.B. – I’d like to call your attention to two wonderful physical details of EAU DE JANE’s presentation. Jane recounted that her inspiration was derived from the ending credits of films from the 40s! The green “curtain” on her label resembles a theater screen’s velvet curtain, and the font she chose parallels that used to proclaim “The End”.

  • Oh I love bergamot and ylang ylang. I also love the inspirations, designing it with a view to scent memories. ❤️

  • I am a chypre fan. The notes are great. I live in the United States. Thanks for the drawing

  • I, too, lost my father after a few years of rough health and after an even rougher decline and loss of my mother. What my father taught me in the last 2 years of his life were very profound lessons only someone whom has lived a long and varied life could teach. I understand the need for more than just beauty, but instead heart, to be part of any composition. Bravo to Jane! In maryland.

  • I love this scent and have been rationing my sample. I love how it wears close with a soapy skin, lying in the grass feeling, and then how it feels expansive (the wording of ‘cosmic notes’ in the description is spot on in the feeling). And always love Ida’s words.

  • Ida, thank you for this! I love bergamot and rarely see sage in scents. I had a lotion made for our wedding that incorporated sage and it was lovely. I’d love to receive this green chypre. (And my first scent memory was Mom’s Chanel No 5.). NC, USA

  • I love a well-done chypre. The modern elements of tangerine, lime and the Iso E super seem like they would add a cool green touch. The bottle with its 1940s references is gorgeous. So sorry to read about the loss of her father and brother. Tragedies often focus our energy and this fragrance seems like a wonderful way to remember them. I’m in MD, USA,

I LOVE scents with anything green in them. They evoke childhood memories in me as well!

  • kalexander1710 says:

The notes of violet and sage sound very intriguing as they are not notes I see popping up often. In St. Louis, MO

  • What appeals most to me about this fragrance is how it appears to span across time…past, present, and future. I love how Jane Daly simply describes this creation as, “A Cosmic Chypre”. USA

  • I am always on the look out for classical style chypres for my collection. The bottle is beautiful. From Canada

  • All the green-themed pictures got me; and the phrase “green floral chypre” got me; and the reference to classic Miss Dior…! And— AND!— the pretty bottle and clever design. I am sucked in! (USA)

  • Fraghead Summy says:

what i love the most if the use of iso e super along with citrusy top notes which further get enhanced. The whole green character of this scents interests me the most. I am from NYC, USA

  • I love any fragrance that combines sweet, floral, and herbal and does it well in a way that combines the classic and the modern; that is what makes me want to try Eau De Jane. I live in the US.

  • The concept of a “universal scent memory” is wonderful, as are the notes she picked for that memory. The loss of her father and brother were tragic. And through the tragedy, a deeper layer was added. Just marvelous. I also love that she called it Eau de Jane. I am in the US.

I am a huge fan of Jane! Have been DYING to try this scent since its release but alas I live in Europe. Next time I am visiting the USA I plan on ordering a bottle myself – it’s a blind buy I feel comfortable with. A heartfelt congratulations to whoever the winner is. <3

  • rachel wiener says:

This sounds beautiful. I appreciate the transparency in how naturals and synthetics were blended and that bottle and label are absolutely gorgeous! Thank you for the opportunity to try. In USA

  • Gorgeous. I must be honest, I know little of Jane or Daly Beauty. I was quite enamored with the lines “the green grass of childhood, the sunny benediction upon dandelions, clover; an ensuing sojourn into the woods, where cool streams flow over stones”. What a picturesque image! I love the idea of a nice green chypre. Thank you from Canada!

  • Thank you, Ida! What a lovely introduction to a project, memories, & friendship dearly held. ❤️ I trust your recommendations & would be delighted to experience Eau de Jane! Though perhaps not universal, many (including myself) have memories of laying lazily in the summer grass, picking dandelions, that special spot in the woods where cool waters on stone connect to something ancient, etc. I would love to experience a scent that captures this! Of course, with memory comes loss. With loss comes questioning & insight. And so the world continues. I’m grateful to Ms. Daly for sharing with us, her story & her artistic process. ❤️ Thank you for this opportunity! USA

  • Great review. I love chypres, and really any fragrance that blends the classic with the modern. (Rogue Perfumery is my favorite house, for example.) This sounds like an excellent fragrance that fits that pattern. I would love the green aspects of this chypre, I think. And the term “cosmic chypre” rouses my curiosity like none other!

    Cheers from NC, USA.

Very nice review Ida! What appeals to me about Daly Beauty EAU DE JANE is what a deeply personal scent it is to the creator, and how her relationship with her dying father influenced it’s creation. I am incredibly moved by how she feels the time spent with her dying father is one of the happiest times she remembers. The juxtaposition of sadness and happiness is so poignant and inspiring, and I would love to try a perfume inspired by it. I live in the US.

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

I love Vent Vert as well, can’t wait to sniff a fragrance created by someone else who loves it & is inspired by it. I’m in the USA.

  • Grass, sun, woods, water. This sounds like a pretty green fragrance. I like how the review compares this scent to the perfect dish, taking some great ingredients and making them into something even better. Tx, US.

  • My interest about this fragrance was piqued when I saw patchouli, oud and sandalwood. Those notes sound appealing to me. Greetings from Maryland.

  • A perfume with “a natural heart and a synthetic spine!” I love this almost as much as the promise of a green floral chypre fragrance that contains notes of violet leaf and sage. I’m intrigued. I hope to meet this beauty soon. The inspiration and thoughts of Jane Daly shared here are humbling. Thank you. USA

  • Bryant Worley says:

What appeals to me about Eau de Jane, firstly, is that the name doesn’t define the fragrance, as I see it as unisex, if anything. Secondly, the note selection, along with the beautiful composition and thoughtfulness put into the fragrance is fantastic.

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • MJ FragHead says:

Bergamot and patchouli my favs… Love the story & to learn how good things take time, they really do!! The bottle is awesome looking as well!! Ohio USA thanks for the opportunity & good luck everyone!!

  • I have seen this perfume talked about on Instagram, and I have read Jane’s beauty column and enjoyed her infrequent perfume reviews as she and I seemed to have similar tastes. For these reasons, and because I love “green” perfumes, I have been eager to try this one. Thanks for the illustrative review and the chance to sample.

Thanks for the great review Ida.

This is such an intriguing fragrance. The bottle presentation, label and font details that you mentioned in your review are quite neat.

I love how your review mentions that this fragrance is an ode to so many memories. I hope to to be able to sense those, whenever I get a chance to get a nose on this.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I love Ida’s reviews, and this is no exception. Daly Beauty EAU DE JANE seems to be a lovely perfume, a neo-classical, cosmic chypre, as Ida describes it. The list of notes: Mandarin, lime, bergamot, tangerine, galbanum, rose, jasmine, neroli, ylang-ylang, carnation, violet leaf, sage, vetiver moss, amber, musk, oud, patchouli, sandalwood, Iso E Super® (IFF) – it has all the ingredients to make a very heady, charming perfume. Musk, Oud, patchouli in the base sound lovely. The connection with green curtains of films in the forties on the bottle is interesting. Would love to try this perfume. Thanks for the review and draw. From USA.

  • Oooh a green chypre! I’ve been interested in these for a whole now but this also seems like it has some modern twists to it. If love to give this a try. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway.
