Creed Angelique Encens meets Vintage Tabarôme: Dietrich Does Bogey and Churchill + Draw

Here in the Northeast… well, baby- it’s cold outside.

And we ain’t gonna get warmer anytime soon.

So we might as well warm ourselves up in aromatic fashion.

A classic antidote is my favorite Creed mélange.

It is profoundly satisfying and disturbing, and I’m happy to share it with you:

One part Private Collection Vintage Tabarôme to one part Private Collection Angelique Encens.

+

Sounds simple?

Hardly.

First, you have to find them and buy them.

Vintage Tabarôme has nothing to do with the ginger/ green tea Millesîme version available today.

Last heard, on the official Creed website- approximately one year ago-

Creed announced that they would no longer be able to produce it.

It was too difficult to source the ingredients – so when it was gone, it would be gone for good.

A pity, truly.

Henry Creed created it in 1875, and it was beloved by such icons as Winston Churchill and Humphrey Bogart.

It is a full-bodied, generous sort of Burgundian- blond tobacco blended with bergamot, pepper, fine sandalwood [remember that?], and ambergris in abundance.

Substantial, not a flighty fragrance.

An elegant John Falstaff.

Angelique Encens was released in 1933a very good year for perfume!

Think Lanvin’s Scandal, Weil’s Secret de Venus, Patou’s Divine Folie, Guerlain’s Sous le Vent and Vol de Nuit.

Bingo!

This, too, is no shrinking violet.

Attributed to Marlene Dietrich, Angelique Encens is a bewitching scent  utilizing angelica, tuberose, Indian jasmine,  Bulgarian rose, incense, ambergris and vanilla.

Sophisticated in the extreme, it will ‘pull’ different notes on each skin; as I tend to sweeten most scents, it eventually becomes very balsamic on me, with a mere tendril of smokiness.

There exists an exquisite balance between the luxurious florals and the bitter/herbal angelica.

Smoky/floral, sweet/bitter, salty, profound/profane…

Small wonder it was favored by the androgynously seductive gender-bending Dietrich.

It takes one’s breath away.

What happens when these two beauties meet on the skin?

Aromatic enchantment.

Enough to make the fragrance buyer at Neiman’s- a very sedate lady-

Lunge toward me, inhale deeply, and sigh:

Dear Lord…WHAT are you wearing?”

Sadly, neither scent is listed any longer on Parfums Raffy [where it was always available], or on the official Creed website.

Furthermore, they evolve – as fragrances today do not always do.

It’s a real adventure.

So, here’s what I’ll do:

I’ll happily make up three samples of this combination from my own stash [kept cool, dry, and dark in my frosty closet !] for three commenters…

Enjoy them with my blessing.

MWAH !

Draw will take place on Saturday January 22.

  • Well, yes, I'd love to try them! They've never been on my radar, as is the case for Creed in general, but I'm game to give the house a shot. :o)

  • I'm somewhat familiar with Angelique Encens, having tried it before, and loved it!!  It dries to a powdery scent on me, lovely! I haven't tried the Vintage Tabarome.  I think I would love to experiment with both scents and see what the combo smells like on me!! Sounds wonderful!! Would love this!!

  • Oh, this really sounds like an intriguing combination. Plus, anything that reminds one of M. Dietrich cannot possibly be anything but great. 🙂

  • I would love to try that combinations! Thank you, Ida!
Incense is one of my favorite notes and the mix sounds like a perfect winter scent. It would be a pleasure and an honour to try something so intoxicating and classic.

  • As soon as I saw this post on FB, I had to run over here.  You layer Tabarome & Angelique Encens, as well!  I've done this for years, never heard of another person who layered these 2.  This is so exciting to me!  (isn't it funny, the things that thrill us?)  Cheers!

  • OMG!  The idea is sending chills down my spine.  Please enter me in the draw!   I have tried them both in the past and loved them but never together.  This is even more magical because they are unavailable.  What a crime…

  • I think this could be the most brilliant layering idea ever! Please enter me into the drawing. I love AE but have never tried Tabarome.

  • Yep, cold here, too, with lots of snow, sleet, freezing rain, plain rain, and more cold and snow today.  Hurray for winter!  Please enter me in the draw.

  • I'm in love with fragrances mal odors and all.  As a former student of Fragrance studies I have always found it such a pity that fragrance companies don't donate (or what the heck, even sell!), samples of such wonderful vintage, classic and or unconventional fragrances to FIT for study.  I think that knowledge of the potent potions of the past can help inspire innovations of the future.  The combination of the two fragrances mezmerizingly discribed by you sounds abosolutely breathtaking.  Please enter me in the drawing!

  • you smell!! says:

I tried Angelique Encens before but never Vintage Tabarome, and of course I'd love to win and try this combo! Also is nice to see your pic, is always nice to know the actual person behind all these cool reviews, thanks!!!

Wow! it sounds amazing! I never tried these two before, and it looks that it getting harder to find them too. Please enter my name in the draw please. Many thanks!

  • Fascinating!  Each of these sounds wonderful on its own, but I am intrigued/impressed by your layering of the "Falstaffian" Vintage Tabarome with the "breathtaking" Angelique Ancens.  I'd be delighted if, on my skin, the combo would inspire the same "Dear Lord…WHAT are you wearing?" response.  Please do enter me into the draw.

  • I love your site!.  And would love to have your combo.   The names are intriguing as well.  Fun.

  • Quite the freewheeling writing style you've got there, Ida — a real pleasure to read! Please enter me in the draw.

  • Thank you for interesting articles, interviews, and inspiring draws!
I'd love to try your blend, even though I haven't tried either one of the ingredients!

  • Oh, that Tabarome is calling my name! I may have tried it years ago, but probably not, because when I was a silly girl I mostly stuck to "feminine: scents – now I know better! I would love to try these! 🙂

  • Lovely review as always. ahh the classics and the icons who loved them and wore them with abandon.
no more sniff sniff. It is scary to thuinj that precious ingredients are becoming scacer and scacer .
If it is not too much trouble, I would love to try this combo .

Thank you for your customary generosity !

It's such a pleasure to see the interest surrounding: these two !
Kathleen: lovely to meet a fellow admirer of the duo ; I'll warrant there are many others out there besides us !
Thank you all for reading and sharing your thoughts; I appreciate hearing all you have to say 😉
I love the interactive aspect of writing for you….

  • I had a decant of Angelique Encens years ago, but it was so powdery on me, I swapped it away. I think I should have given it more time since the notes make me swoon and "ought" to smell wonderful! And I've never experienced Vintage Tabarome, so I'd love an opportunity to try both!

    Thanks for having the giveaway

  • OK I am a lover of vintage Creed… Oh how I would love to get my hands on these two. How awesome of you to part with some…Ida not sure I would..:)

  • I finally have acquired both vintage Tabarome & Angelirque Encens and layered them tonight. Swooning, is a mild response.
