Chatillon Lux Sunrise on LaSalle Review (Shawn Maher) 2021 + Reunion of Generations Draw

Spring, that time of eternal awakening, remakes our little planet world into garden. Catching the bloomy perfume of mock orange, realizing suddenly that the ground warms and gives way beneath our feet as we walk it, and feeling the sun filter through the new luxuriance of leaves and tree blossoms, can stir a sense of possibility. Earth tells us it is time to smile again. And that is precisely what Shawn Maher’s latest fragrance for Chatillon Lux, Sunrise on LaSalle, intends to do. Chatillon Lux Sunrise on LaSalle is an origami arrangement of pear, geranium and jasmine tea that sings of quiet optimism. It looks both backward to the homey comforts of things like pear jam and geraniums on the sill while also craning its neck to see toward the horizon, where there’s the open road of a new day upon whose route all possibilities exist.

Chatillon Lux founder and perfumer Shawn Maher explains Sunrise on LaSalle’s genesis: “As the world turns a corner and optimism abounds, it feels like the sun is rising on a new chapter. With that in mind, I have been thinking about bright, pleasant scents, but scents that do not smell like anything that we’re used to. Something new and unexpected. When I think of bright, pleasant scents, I think about the flora l market on LaSalle Ave. It’s one of the oldest in the country and supplies florists all over with flowers. In the morning, the dew coats the plants, while inside freshly cut flowers, wooden planters and other uplifting scents abound. That was the jumping off point for Sunrise on LaSalle.

The first spray is a beautifully realized pear note, its green, syrupy juice augmented with facets of rose and cream and a hit of spearmint. I love the dessert spice and tree blossom aroma of pear and often forget to eat the ones I buy because I get so distracted by their bouquet. But in perfumery, while I am always eager to try anything that features pear, I find that often it gets sugary and thin and even a bit plastic. Not so here. The rosy aspect of the fruit is quite pronounced to me early on, and plants the pear in a blooming garden where there is, it soon turns out, an abundance of geranium.

Maher used a geranium essential oil from South Africa fortified with aroma chemicals that lend fruity, rosy and minty notes harmonize the pear and geranium. He then perks everything up with a touch of mint that gives the first part of Chatillon Lux Sunrise on LaSalle its dewy, early morning freshness. And that mint also acts as a silken green thread that ties into the flowery, serene smell of jasmine green tea that surfaces in the middle. Green tea was an inspired choice to stir into the composition, as it adds just the right touch of tannic bitterness to balance the fruity, fleshy pear juice. The dried jasmine odor whispers, but its quiet floralcy tames the geranium’s peppery bite. The ongoing interplay between bitter green, juicy fruit, mint and vegetal tea patterns a fragrance that is fresh and bouncy while also soothing and verdant.

In the later stages of the perfume’s trajectory, Maher added a small amount of oakmoss absolute to underpin the tea and bring out the mulchier, richer qualities of the Virginia cedar essential oil that gives the fruity and flowery notes a burnished, deep foundation to rest on. At its zenith, Sunrise on LaSalle smells like the best moments of a childhood day in the country – pear juice from fruit straight off the tree, the garden smells of mulchy ground and wild mint tumbling over boxed geraniums in Mom’s garden – overlaid with the contemplative, calming waft of green tea through the open window where the adults are listening to Vaughn Williams and reading the morning paper. In its marriage of adult smells of green tea and cedar with the bucolic smells of back then,  Chatillon Lux Sunrise on LaSalle smells like the reunion of generations. And that could not be more perfect for this moment in time.

Notes: Pear, geranium, jasmine tea, and Virginia cedar.

Bought a sample set from Chatillon Lux and this one is certainly interesting. It has a good greenness to it, and the geranium sits front and center to me with everything else supporting it! Perfect scent for spring! Love all of Shaun’s work so far, and in the CL line my favorite is tied between Confluence and La Petite Prairie! My favorite scent he’s created though are probably tied for Confluence and Treachery

  • Sandro Mateush says:

I love pear! And I’m literally drinking right now green tea with jasmine. What more can I say 🙂

  • AleksCipri says:

Sunrise on LaSalle sounds like a perfect spring fragrance. I look through my balcony and see amazing green grass, flowers and birds and just imagine how perfectly the smell of this perfume would fit into this picture. I love Lauryn’s description and how she describes this fragrance as a combination of adult with the bucolic smells and a reunion of generations. I didn’t know about Chatillon Lux until know but I’m going to their website to learn more for sure! I’m from Illinois, US.

  • I think we all need the best moments of a childhood in the country. Sounds like a fun scent for the season with all of the pear and geranium notes. I have not sampled any of Shaun’s beautiful fragrances. I need to right now! California.

  • Pear is such a great scent for perfumes. One of my favorites. I haven’t heard of this brand but it sounds very interesting.

  • Courtenay Courier says:

These are some of my most favourite notes, and I cannot be more intrigued as he says it’s unlike what we know them to be. I don’t have a favourite Chatillon scent yet, but this is beautiful.

  • Dubaiscents says:

Pear plus geranium sounds very unique, I’d love to smell this. I think we all could use a nice uplifting scent! I love Sean’s work and recently got to smell Benton Park which will be coming out exclusively at The American Perfumer. Such a new take on Tuberose. I also loved Wienstrasse and Orris Forrest. Highly recommend that people explore this whole line. Thanks for the draw. US

  • I am curious to see how all these notes work together, from the green and minty pear, to the floral tea accord, all the way to the cedar oil. I love that a little oak moss was added. I haven’t had a chance to try any of these creations yet, but I have been curious about it. I am in the DFW area.

  • I have never tried Chantillon Lux as it is not locally available or anywhere within reasonable distance to try, but this sounds amazing. Who doesn’t love the sunrise! I love fragrances of this nostalgic style and the note breakdown of geranium and jasmine tea is very interesting!

Hi! I’ve never experienced a perfume from this house, but Sunrise on LaSalle sounds beautiful and perfect for Spring! I really enjoyed this perfume and love that the pear seems to be rich and not too sugary, thin or plastic-like in smell. I also love fragrances with oakmoss/cedar/woody notes in the base.

  • Jeff Paris says:

I used the shave soap and splash yesterday. The pear! The pear hit me like a memory. I was remembering my grandmother and helping her can pears and pear butter. Then the jasmine tea and geranium after the pear softens. One of my Aunts owned a flower shop, and her house was a floral wonder of its own. Two of my favorite women in my life evoked by one fragrance! My current favorite fragrance by Chatillon Lux is La Petite Prairie. The vetiver and rhubarb are very evocative of childhood memories of life on the alfalfa farm. And it’s one that gets compliments.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Wow this sounds amazing. I love the idea of the pear and the mint with jasmine green tea. Everything about this sounds amazing. I have had this house on my must sample list for some time but still haven’t tried any offerings. I would love to win this one. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Lauryn did a great job evoking the smells and ambience of childhood spring and summer days. Surprisingly the list of notes doesn’t have the smells and notes described. Treachery, Tempo Rubato, Crystal Moon are my favorites from Chatillon Lux and Maherolfactive, but most of Shawn’s creations have a depth one doesn’t see in other perfumes, so I like most of them, as they reveal themselves slowly and when you least expect them to. Sunrise on LaSalle seems so cheerful and I am sure is wonderful. Thanks for the review and draw. Writing from the USA.

  • After having read from this review, I truly want to try this fragrance, and all of the other fragrances made by perfumer Shawn Maher. I enjoy the use of geranium in perfumery very much and this fragrance seems like it contains a high-quality geranium aspect. I want to see how the geranium pairs with the pear, jasmine tea, and the Virginia cedar. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • I laughed when I read “I am always eager to try anything that features pear” because I am always eager to avoid pear for the same reasons mentioned–it goes plasticky. I’ve been meaning to buy a sample set from this house. I love geranium and this scent sounds so unique. Thanks! I’m in the US.

  • GennyLeigh says:

Pear in fragrance is always a tricky note for me but Shawn Maher seems to have handled it admirably with the addition of mint and geranium. I’m always happy to see geranium in perfume. I love it’s spicy floral quality. I would love to try Sunrise on LaSalle as I’ve not tried any Chatillon Lux fragrances before.

  • Julesinrose says:

I got super interested in this line just from reading this. I have never heard of this house and am going to order a sample set! In the USA

  • Jed Or Alive says:

I’m a huge fan of both tea and florals, so this sounds right up my alley. My current favorite from Chatillon Lux is Weinstrasse, which brings back memories of a trip to wine country that I took with friends a number of years back. Located in California.

  • What strikes you about Sunrise on LaSalle is just the scent description is just optimism. Pear ,jasmine, and cedar just is so inviting especially this time of the year. Definitely think this would be my favorite Chatillon Lux fragrance.

  • Sunrise on LaSalle does seem like an unique optimistic scent. And I love pear in a fragrance. I haven’t tried anything from Chatillon Lux, though I love reading about them. I am in the US.

  • wilsonwc76 says:

This sounds lovely! It has so many of my favorite notes put together! I love pear, and jasmine tea, and mint and oak moss. I can imagine them all coming together beautifully! I don’t know this house, but I would be very exciting to learn more! I’m in NYC.

  • The fragrance sounds perfect for spring into summer and I love that retro style label on the bottle. I do not have a fav Chatillon Lux fragrance. I live in Virginia, USA. Thanks!

  • doveskylark says:

I believe anything related to pears and geraniums brings happiness and just a pleasant state of mind. When I see potted geraniums, on a balcony for example, I feel joy. It also feels like someone–the planter of the geraniums– hasn’t given up yet, someone still is fighting for all that is good in life. Lauryn’s review captured the joy that must live in this bottle. I haven’t tried anything from Chatillon Lux.

    I live in the USA.

  • I love the idea of pleasant scents that are also “not like anything that we’re used to.” This also gave me a clear image of plants early in the morning…
I don’t believe I’ve tried any Chatillon Lux.

What interests me about Sunrise on LaSalle is how Lauryn beautifully describes this fragrance a juicy pear, vegetal mint, a beautiful floral combination of geranium and rose, and some earthy garden elements to round the fragrance out. My favorite Chatillon Lux fragrance is Sylva. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thank you for the beautiful review Lauryn.

I picked up a sample of this fragrance and this review is spot on. I really love the pear note in this fragrance, the minty and water touches and the transition into the beautiful green tea and jamine notes.

My memory of this fragrance is with the RiverMarket in Kansas City – where the florists gather over the weekend. I would browse around on my visits and then stop to get some green tea later.

I’m grateful that this review brought back memories of those trips.

My favourite Chatillon Lux fragrance is Confluence

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I’m intrigued by the pear and jasmine green tea notes. Both things I like, but haven’t experienced much in perfume. I embarrassed to say I still haven’t tried any Chatillon Lux. I live in the USA.

  • This definitely sounds like a lovely spring fragrance! Green and juicy pear and the geranium sound very refreshing. I also like a tea note and the oakmoss and cedar sound like a solid base for it. I haven’t tried anything from this house before, so no favorite yet. Thanks for the giveaway! I live in the USA.
