Whitney Swales of Wit & West Perfumes

Whitney Swales of Wit & West Perfumes

Profile: From as early as I can remember I have had a passion for scent and the world of perfume. Growing up, perfume and everything scented including body oils and perfumed body powders, soaps and candles were a staple in my life. My mom wore Chanel No. 5, Youth Dew and Private Collection by Estee Lauder and my dad wore Polo by Ralph Lauren and Lagerfeld by Karl Lagerfeld. One Christmas, my dad got my mom a limited edition of Private Collection pure parfum that came in a beautiful crystal bottle complete with a tassel and drawstring leather bag. My mom cherished this little bottle of perfume for years, wearing only 2-3 drops for special occasions. Even after the bottle was empty it sat on top of her bedroom dresser in a vintage glass jewelry box that I would admire from afar. Fast forward to my early teens – the point in which I really started taking an interest in fragrance. Being a child of the 1980s and 1990s, my initial fragrance loves were the mainstream youth fragrances of the time such as Exclamation, Tribe, CK One, Vanilla Fields and Sunflowers. For holidays and my birthday, I received more elevated fragrances including a perfume miniature set and the originals of both Clinique Aromatics Elixir and Happy. I loved how I felt when wearing perfume. Aromatics Elixir made me feel sophisticated and enigmatic, Happy made me feel refreshed and alive.

Whitney Swales – as a child in her dad’s boutique shop, Swale Hall in Colorado Springs

Even outside my home with my parents, the world we lived in was connected to all things scented. My dad owned a British imports boutique shop in Colorado Springs called Swale Hall (named for our last name Swales, as well as the namesake for the 16th century estate of Sir Solomon Swale, 1st Baronet, Yorkshire, England) that included everything from beautiful wool sweaters and scarves to British teas, candies and chocolates, as well as perfumes, soaps, lotions and scented body powders from Floris of London. I loved visiting my dad at the shop as there was always something new to explore. My memory of the shop recalls a vivid and fragrant world of delicious candies, tea and of course Floris of London’s, Lily of the Valley.

Rob & Whitney of Wit & West Perfumes

Rob & Whitney – An Evening at the House of Wit & West Perfumes

Beyond fragrance, my husband Rob and I have always been captivated by music and the visual and gastronomic arts and drawn toward travel and unique cultural experiences. Both my husband and I have worked in the corporate world for over two decades (Rob is an aerospace engineer and I am a marketer in the hospitality industry), but our passions outside the 9-5 have always been creative in nature – Rob is a percussionist and drummer, and I am a ballroom dancer. My love for sensorial experiences and artistic self-expression led me to ballroom dance about 11 years ago and since then, I have competed at the amateur level in what is known as American Style in the ballroom world (“9 dance”, i.e., 9 different dances in the American Style).

Peony Enfleurage by Whitney Swales of Wit & West Perfumes

As a lifelong appreciator of rare and unique fragrances, I never dreamed becoming a perfumer was within my reach, until a few years ago. I had started to get an itch to do something different with my career…something more fulfilling. I began studying perfumery on my own and then decided I wanted to take it to the next level and set out to learn from world-renowned natural perfumers such as Anya McCoy of Anya’s Garden Perfumes and the Natural Perfumery Institute, Mandy Aftel, owner of Aftelier Perfumes and Charna Ethier of Providence Perfume Co. After studying for a couple of years I told Rob I wanted to do something with perfumery – and to my delight, he said “Go for it!”

Wit & West Perfumes Bespoke Perfume Experience

Wit & West Perfumes Bespoke Perfume Experience

Wit and West Perfumes is a Colorado based artisan natural perfumery founded in 2021 by myself (Wit), and my husband Rob (West, short for Rob’s last name, Westendorf). Wit & West is a passion-based business, paying homage to traditional methods of artisan perfumery through both our Bespoke Experience (custom designed perfumes) and our process of handcrafting our perfumes and colognes in small batches using 100% all-natural ingredients including custom handmade tinctures and enfleurage extraits carefully selected, sourced and handmade from raw materials including those from our very own garden.

On American Perfumery: Being an American Perfumer and perfume brand is about accessibility and breaking down the barriers of entry into the world of perfumery. The interweaving of perfume, culture and history has evolved for thousands of years and is something to be celebrated. To me, perfume is more than a fad and more than simply smelling good. It is about creating a personal story and attaching us to history, culture and the natural world around us. The focus of Wit & West is on artisan natural perfumery as a genre or artistic choice, a style of perfumery that was largely abandoned and viewed as outdated until more recently. I owe the ability to carve out my own space as an artisan natural perfumer to other American indie, artisan and natural perfumers who have been helping shape the industry for the last 20-30 years.

Louis Van Amstel

Favorite American Artist: My favorite American artist is Louis Van Amstel, a Dutch-American ballroom dance champion, professional dancer, and choreographer who previously appeared on the U.S. reality television series Dancing with the Stars. As a ballroom dancer, I feel incredibly fortunate and thankful for the opportunity to learn from Louis, a coach and teacher who visits my ballroom dance studio several times per year as a guest coach. One of the things I appreciate and admire about Louis is his ability to leverage both the technical and artistic sides of ballroom dance. In both perfume and dance, I feel like you can never stop learning as there is always something new to be explored or expanded upon.

Anytime I feel like I am stuck or like I am hitting a creative wall in perfumery I think of what Louis would tell me about dancing, “…Define your goal and be deliberate in your actions so that you can achieve it. Once you define the goal, you must start with the foundational elements, the basics. From there, you can add in the artistic and personalized layers that give depth, interest, beauty…”

  • Whitney Swales seems to have been fascinated with fragrances and good smells from her childhood. Self Studied perfumery and also studied under other natural perfumers. I like the fact that Wit & West offer bespoke experience- custom designed perfumes. I really like the colorful packaging.
If I win the draw, I would love Rosa De Bolero.
    Maryland, US.

  • I loved to read about Whitney’s childhood adventures in her father’s shop! It’s amazing the kinds of worlds we build from youth that we still carry into adulthood, the whimsy and wonder we manage to translate into our wiser years. I would love a bottle of Brumaire Woods; I have a weakness for tobacco!
    USA

  • I love Whitney’s story so much. As a fellow American with aspirations of going into perfumery, it is very inspiring to see representation. I think her entry is quite unique and speaks mounds to her character. The concept of her brand is quite intriguing as well. Lastly, the way she fell in love with perfumery is quite relatable. If I were to win, I would love to try the samples first, but Honeysuckle Halcyon sounds lovely. Kind regards from IN, USA.

  • What guts it takes to change and start a new career. I love that idea. And to establish yourself as a perfumer in America. I think your dance drive is perfect for the perfume world. If I were to win I would probably grab FLEUR DU RIAD. In maryland.

I really enjoy this series. It’s a great spotlight on the up and comers “at home” that we might not otherwise hear about. I love that Whitney was working in the corporate world and then one day, she decided to take a chance at one of her beloved hobbies, and with her partner’s blessing. Not everyone gets that opportunity and support, and I’m glad it worked out for her. Gives me hope that maybe one day I can figure this out as well. I found it also interesting that she is a ballroom dancer and how she takes inspiration from her dance teacher when creating new perfumes. It is fascinating to me how different arts intersect.

I was not familiar with the brand so I perused their offerings, and I think I’d be getting Honeysuckle Halcyon. I appreciate that whoever the winner is will be getting a discovery set to try all of their scents before buying a bottle. I’m not sure what happened to La Valse but its scent profile is also intriguing. I live in Maryland, thank you for the draw.

  • The thing I found fascinating (as well as the most interesting) about Whitney’s path to perfumery were her beginnings as a child. We all know that fragrances are tied heavily into memories and I love hearing about people’s first scent memories. Hearing her speak about her mother and father’s fragrance loves and seeing how it shaped her own journey and maturation into perfumery was endearing. It makes me think of my own. My mother, wearing Vanilla Fields and various other Avon goods. My father, ALWAYS Brut. To this day I could pick either fragrance out of a crowded room full of perfumistas. Also, even though Whitney and her husband have attained success in their chosen career fields, I love that she’s decided to pursue her passion of being an American Perfumer. It would be an honor to sample her creations and if chosen I would undoubtedly purchase Brumaire Woods (I’m a sucker for a good fougere). Thanks, as always, for the opportunity and Cheers from Illinois!

  • Always interesting to read the perfumes remembered from youth and fragrances worn by parents. I don’t know which one I’d buy as I haven’t smelled any as of yet. US

  • I love hearing about new perfumers. Her childhood connection with scent leading to Wit & West is very exciting. I am excited to try their stuff. If I won. The scent that looks most interesting to me is Honeysuckle Halcyon. You so rarely find anyone even attempting honeysuckle. I am in the US and went ahead and liked the FAcebook post.

  • So cool seeing the creator’s ballroom dance photos. Quite a few of my full bottles of perfume are naturals; it’s what I gravitate towards as someone who easily gets headaches. I took the quiz on the Wit&West website and was suggested I try Jasmine Pet Noi, but would love to sample them all. USA

  • It was interesting to read how Whitney and her husband developed a business out of their passion for perfumery, starting with small steps, and learning from other great perfumers. Looking at their website, Miki Mochi perfume is one I would consider if I were to win this draw, thought there are so many more. From USA.

  • Habari sounds nice. I love tinctures and extraits too. Oh, my goodness. DSH is one of my favorites! Dawn is awesome!! I wonder if those who love music, dance and art have a knack for fragrances. Seems they go hand-in-hand. Sounds wonderful to do something that you love even if it means starting anew. Thanks Whitney and Rob. U.S.A.

  • I felt fascinated with Whitneys path on perfumery. The way that she has always been around the fragrance world with her parents being fragrance lovers themselves is just amazing. I also enjoyed so much reading that they do bespoke fragrances, that sounds like a very interesting idea.
If I win the draw, I would buy Brumaire Woods.
    USA here.

  • Both Whitney Swales and her husband Rob seem like very creative people! I like seeing the intersectionality between the passion for perfume and performing arts (dance and music). Her background studying natural fragrance with some fine American perfumers is quite interesting. All her scents sound interesting but I would most likely choose the Spanish inspired Rosa De Bolero.
I like Profiles in American Perfumery on FB. MD, USA.

  • I love that Whitney’s favorite artist is a ballroom dancer, it is a beautiful art form that most people wouldn’t even think of when you mention artists. I also love the name of her brand and how it combines her and her husband’s names in a creative Ana catchy way. I’m always looking to try new indie brands and would love to smell these. Thank you! US

  • Thanks for the great writeup. It’s so amazing to read about the paths of indie perfumers who have grown up with fragrances. I love that they are both accomplished in their careers, as well an in creative fields outside that.

I’m also very impressed with the name and branding that has been put out.

I would probably pick up Yuzu Pop from this house.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • As I learn more about perfumery, I’m amazed at the varied paths by which perfumers arrive at this art, and Whitney is another great example. I wonder if she’s more informed by scent memory from her childhood around the shop or her early exposure to a range of fine perfumes. Thanks for the interesting profile!

Should I win the draw, I’m really intrigued by the description of Jasmine Pet Noi.

  • Wonderful article! What I found fascinating about Whitney’s path to perfumery is that she has worked in the corporate world for over two decades, but always had a passion for creativity in many different forms and outlets, in fragrance and in music, visual arts, dance and cultural experiences. I love that Whitney took a lifelong passion and appreciation into a career change later in life. As someone who feels similarly in a lot of ways, I admire her courage and creativity. It takes a lot of bravery to make that leap into the unknown from the comfortable.

If I were to win, I would buy Rosa de Bolero. I live in the US.

  • I really enjoyed reading about Whitney’s childhood memories. I admire her for changing careers and following her dream. It’s so interesting that her dad a British imports boutique shop in Colorado Springs that carried Floris and London, and that growing up, she saw her mom’s love and appreciation for perfumes.

If I win, I would purchase Honeysuckle Halcyon. I live in California, USA.

I have liked CaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery.

  • What fascinated me about Whitney’s journey to the fragrance world is as a young child appreciating the scents her parents wore and remembering them. Rosa de Bolero is a scent I would like to try. Thanks for the giveaway. USA, CA.

  • I appreciate discovering a fragrance house which I might enjoy: artisan perfumeries can produce some of my favorite fragrances. I would love to try their samples and become familiar with their fragrance releases. On account of Whitney’s fondness of a lot of the things which her dad would sell, I’m thinking that she might have good taste in regards to certain things, and that she would want to express that good taste in her own products. I live in MD., U.S.A. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  • Please disregard my last comment because I didn’t include which fragrance I would purchase if I won the gift card.
