Profile: The world of nature was imprinted onto my consciousness from a young age and has been part of me for as long as I can remember. I spent my childhood in Traverse City, a town in Northern Michigan surrounded by forest, lakes, and orchards, situated on a bay on Lake Michigan. My family’s house was situated next to public forest land and I spent much of my time outdoors, exploring the woods, talking to trees, picking watercress and wild raspberries down our trail with my mom, and swimming in Lake Michigan or the many smaller lakes.

The scents of my childhood are the scent of cherry orchards, the smell of ferns, cedars, and pines in the woods, of freshwater lakes and my dad cleaning fish, the aromas of apricots and plums at farm market stands, and the smoky scent of creosote in our wood burning stove. I was always noticing and cataloguing the smells of places in my memory (something I still do).

After my mom remarried, my family moved down state to a beach town on Lake Michigan where I spent my adolescence. During that time, I discovered my mom’s old herbal medicine books and became interested in holistic health and natural beauty and I dove into making herbal infusions and beauty concoctions. Essential oils weren’t widely available and natural perfume wasn’t on the radar yet. Perfume didn’t figure into my life at the time because many synthetic fragrances gave me headaches so I largely avoided them, except for the amber perfume oil sold in health food stores and head shops.

I moved to Nashville, TN in 1997 and began working in health and wellness retail, becoming a store buyer for Wild Oats Market and Whole Foods, which furthered my immersion into the world of holistic health. After a decade in retail, I spent a few years as a neurofeedback technician balancing people’s brainwaves, and studied Medical Qigong, the energy work branch of Chinese Medicine (Chinese Medicine has always been one of my favorite subjects). Although I liked working in holistic health and wellness, I had a desire to reconnect with my creativity. I was surrounded by musician friends (and a musician/filmmaker husband) and I wanted to use my right brain for a change and do something creative, too.

Essence and Alchemy Mandy Aftel First Edition

About ten years ago, I did an online search for natural perfume just to see what was available I and ordered samples from various companies. When I tried the samples from Aftelier Perfumes, I was blown away by their beauty. I revisited the site to explore more of Mandy Aftel’s creations and discovered that she had a perfume making tutorial kit. Something inside me whispered “You could do that!” It was like my sensitive nose had finally found its purpose. I bought the kit along with her book Essence and Alchemy and began my journey as a natural perfumer. I worked in stops and starts for years, along the way helping a chocolate sommelier friend create a chocolate olfactory training kit (Projet Chocolat Les Arômes du Chocolat) before finally launching Curioso Perfumes. I chose the name Curioso because I wanted something that would represent an aspect of who I am, and my sense of curiosity was the first thing that came to mind. Curioso is an Italian word that can either be an adjective meaning curious, inquisitive, or peculiar, or a noun meaning an inquisitive person.

On being an American Perfumer:  America is diverse, both in landscape and culture, and this is reflected in American perfumery. There’s such a wide variety of styles and expression and it feels very inclusive. I’ve been so pleased to see natural perfumers being embraced by the indie fragrance world because natural materials are such a magical medium to me.

Curioso Perfumes BOREAL review

Curioso Perfumes Boreal perfume

I often connect with a material and then figure out a pairing to build a perfume around. Curioso Perfumes Boreal, which I created for myself as my personal signature perfume, was built around orris and balsam fir absolute, two of my favorite materials.  I create what I like and I don’t feel pressured to follow anyone else’s dictates.

Favorite American Artist: I’m cheating because they’re two people, but they come as a unit: Charles and Ray Eames. The Eameses produced so much iconic mid century design and their creativity spanned the gamut, from furniture to architecture to film, and Ray was also a talented sculptor and painter. To me, they embody the spirit of curiosity, a sense of fun, and the boundary pushing nature of the creative process, and I find them so inspiring.

  • Northern Michigan is a treasure trove of beautiful scents. Just smelling the fresh scent of pine needles and the earthy forest floor can transport me right back to the family camping vacations of my childhood.

  • I know that area of Michigan so well. There are areas that are so wild and untamed. I’m sure the scent memories must be fantastic. Erin’s path seems so interesting considering where she came from. I love the balsam fir as a note. What a wonderful Discovery set. Thanks for a great article and an exciting draw. I’m in the USA.

  • I liked Erin’s description of the scents of her childhood; cherry orchids, woods, freshwater lakes. Scent is a powerful memory motivator and the smell of popcorn and saltwater takes me back to my childhood at the beach with my grandmom.

  • I loved her natural curiosity and her realization of knowing what she wanted to do in this life. Creation with purpose is some of the greatest creation there is. I am drawn to Nuovo Cacao, as I am a gourmand lover. (CaFleurebon Profiles in American Perfumery has been liked. Commenting from FL, USA.)

  • I enjoyed that we got to see inside her experience and mind as a perfumer. That part about being curious really stood out too. Curiosity is necessary for creativity ! I was drawn to Boreal the most !

  • I found Erin’s life and path to perfumery quite fascinating and I am intrigued by these natural perfumes. I love the brand’s name and I am especially drawn to Nuovo Cacao. I live in the USA.

  • I enjoyed how Erin discovered her sense for perfumes and how natural all came to her. Very excited to try the samples of her offerings. I’m in the USA.

  • I have noticed (and appreciate) that nature, and early exposure to the natural world, seems to be a common thread for these natural perfumers. Nature gets in your soul, and I love that these perfumers are inspired to express that, through scent.

As with all of these wonderful profiles, I enjoy reading about indie perfumers’ early childhood smell associations. Erin’s woodsy Michigan aromas are evocative and familiar for me. I also liked hearing about her process of finding a material to highlight and working around that. Thank you for this draw! I’m in the US.

  • Thanks for introducing another fabulous perfumer. I enjoyed reading about her journey. The discovery set is a perfect way to start exploring Curioso Perfumes. I liked CaFleureBon Profiles in American Perfumery! USA

  • Erin, it sounds like we had a similar childhood! I grew up in rural Indiana and spent much of my time exploring the woodlands and the creek that ran through my parents’ back yard. I’m sure I talked to a few trees, but I preferred bird watching and trying to mimic their calls to get them to respond to me. 🙂
The idea of a chocolate training kit is very intriguing to me. I find the art of chocolate and perfume making to be very similar. Some is manufactured quickly and inexpensively for mass audiences and a cheap thrill — but when you find a chocolate that has been painstakingly sourced from only the finest ingredients and made in small batches, that’s truly something special!
As you can tell, I love chocolate, so I’d have to say I’m most interested in trying Nuovo Cacao.
I am from the US and have liked CaFleurebon Profiles in American Perfumery on FB. Thanks Curioso Perfumes for the opportunity to explore your line!

  • The landscape of MI in which she grew up sounds very green. Woodsy, herbaceous, dry, great notes which you dont see as often in designer frags nowadays. Curious about what Boreal smells like, given that it says balsam and orris. Sounds powdery and dark.
Im in the US. Thanks for the draw

  • I love how she took a creative spin on her knowledge and her memories and her sensitive nose to find herself where she is today, this soul-fulfilling combination of her past brought into the present this way. Erin inspires me often!

  • Great article Erin, my daughter’s name! I love Eames design and furniture. Amazing people and changed the world of design. I would love to try a sample set of your fragrances. Thank your for the chance. USA. I liked your article on Facebook.

  • Path + Mandy Aftel = aha moment. Perfect! As I read the memories she carries, I thought, “Oh please don’t incorporate the fish”. I am drawn to Boreal.

  • Erin seems like she was born to be a perfumer. I like how independent and curious she is. To make what you like and not what you think everyone else would like is the mark of an artist to me. I’m most drawn to South Seas. I hope for great success for her. Thank you for sharing her story and also the giveaway. In the USA. I also went to CaFleurebon Profiles in American Perfumery and liked this report.

  • I enjoyed reading about Erin’s childhood and her memories of Northern Michigan. I have heard about the wonders of this part of the USA, especially of the Great Lakes. I love these profiles of American perfumers because we get to read about the diverse landscapes of the USA.
    I live in the USA.

  • I love Erins story, study of Eastern Medicine like Qigong and a path to perfumery. In finding yourself is what makes life awesome. I really appreciate perfumers who create natural fragrances. Thanks for the draw. I live in USA.

  • My mom is from the Upper Peninsula, and her family had a lake cabin we would visit often. The scent of those woods haunts me. One of the two visceral place-related scent memories of my childhood. So this beginning to Erin’s fragrance journey is what calls to me. Boreal is the scent I would most like to try.
