Çafleurebon Fragrant Awakenings: Neela Vermeire Creations Trayee (Bertrand Duchaufour) 2011 +A Perfumista’s Tale Draw

neela Vermiere is damir's favorite niche perfume

Damir as a young boy (his fragrant awakening is Neela Vermeire Creations Trayee)

Many ages ago, flowers attracted me with their colors and odors, so my nose searched nearby meadows, my own, and neighbors’ gardens. Born in the year of Guerlain Chamade, most of my childhood I spent surrounded by many famous perfumes in their pre-IFRA formulations. Edmond Roudnitska’s Diorella was a contemporary fragrance less than ten years old at the end of the seventies. Just as nowadays, I have lived in Croatia, then part of the former state of Yugoslavia, a socialist country of somewhat opened type in the seventies and eighties. An average person had a passport and went to shops in Trieste, Italy, or Graz, Austria. Those were the places where we bought many products for basic life or clothes of modern design. Although some of those things were available here, they were cheaper abroad. Husbands usually returned from some business trip with perfume for their wives, and in those times, daughters secretly wore their mother’s new perfume. Thus, alongside Diorella, I remember Rochas Madame and Femme, L’air du Temps, Chanel no. 19, and Cristalle as perfumes present in my primary school.

Best Vintage Perfumes of the 70s and 80s

Damir’s Collection of Vintage Perfumes

However, most people wore fragrances produced by domestic companies, original or under license, which included Revlon, Lentheric, Yardley, Juvena, and some others. Our firms that made them were pharmaceutical companies, and Croatian oakmoss was a grand ingredient in some of them, and the world’s perfumers used it, too. Chypre by factory Pliva-Neva, one of the regular domestic fragrances, is one of the best chypre scents ever.  The most evocative for me is Yardley’s Chique, a memory of a lovely girl, and male fragrance Chaz, which I even spent a full bottle.  The collection of male sport colognes Walter Wolf was very popular, and I  drained a bottle of a woody Formula 2. At the epoch which didn’t care about the protection of animals, natural musk was a regular ingredient of perfumes. Originally French, later German, house Nerval had the entire line based on musk, and among a few male fragrances, I liked Musk Men Pur. Almost full, my second bottle is still in my collection because my fragrant matters have turned in a different direction. When we were at the end of primary school, boys went mad about Brut, which was not a new fragrance at all. Not Brut itself, but its omnipresence on every step made it for my no.1 nightmare of the fragrant world. During one of the trips abroad, I found a little perfumery that opened to me the whole new world. It was the first time I felt that I freely choose among hitherto unseen. Theretofore, I took the best from actually a little bit offered.

After a long time and after a kind of dazed overload, I came across  Yves St. Laurent Kouros, which was almost a new fragrance, less than three years old. The  House of Yves Saint Laurent was still in its Charles of the Ritz era. Well, that was a legendary moment. Inner and outer smiles stated: “They will be sick of this. ” I bought it. Later, after a lunch break, I came back to the same perfumery and continued to explore. Yes, it was the big moment when I felt the original, unruly passion for the first time, and bought another one, my first, big fragrant love that still lasts, Azzaro.  Time of secondary school (1984 -1988) was a period of exploring various fragrances. I evidenced the appearance of Armani Eau Pour Homme, Eau Sauvage Extreme, Fahrenheit, Cool Water, and many others. On the other hand, I’ve been tending towards scents that weren’t that popular at the time, so I took my first bottle of Guerlain Habit Rouge. Nearly twenty years later, the same perfume signified my wedding day. It’s hard to summarize the ’90s, but many lovely memories belong to Insense, Basala, The Dreamer, Voyageur, Jaipur Homme and Bvlgari Black. The two latter might be a reason to call Annick Menardo for my first fragrant hero. I still wear them both. The late ’90s was the first time I tried some of the “niche” perfumes. They were just not for me, so I have never turned back to those particular fragrances. I was still more impressed with the designer houses including  Dior and Yves St. Laurent… M7, Rive Gauche, Memoire D’homme, and Dior Homme in the first years of this century. Simultaneously, I became interested in exploring fragrances in depth and started to search the Internet, read books, and then  blogs.

No one would think it today, but I wasn’t fascinated by social media at first. Finally, I found that Facebook might be a  good source of all things fragrant, so I opened my profile in late 2012. It’s crucial because it symbolizes the beginning of my enthusiasm for American Artisans, natural perfumers, and small niche perfume houses.

Neela Vermeire

One of the names I saw frequently was Neela Vermeire Creations. I read some articles on Neela Vermeire and her collection, also stories around her perfumes revived subjects I explored and learned  about many years ago.

Primarily, the story of Trayee, which connects various themes from ancient Indian tradition and philosophy. Bertrand Duchaufour was not a new perfumer to me, and I remember that I was happy when I noticed Neela’s and his collaboration because I already liked at least four of his perfumes. Then one of Neela Vermeire’s generous giveaways happened, I was among the winners. Samples of Neela VermeireTrayee, Mohur, and Bombay Bling arrived in the beautiful, small bag, which I still treasure. Following Neela’s tales of India, her birthplace chronologically, I started with Neela Vermeire Creations Trayee. The initial experience of its beauty made me impatient, so I gave quick sniffs to Mohur and Bombay Bling, which I adore. At that point, I continued my fascination with Trayee, and it still lasts.

Neela Vermeire Creations Trayee and other perfumes

Damir’s collection of Neela Vermiere Perfumes

My seven years with Neela Vermeire Trayee reminds me of understanding the time and cosmic events as a spiral, which enables slight changes and progress in the universe.  Like Neela Vermeire CreationsTrayee, wearing it many times I’ve found tiny differences in the diffusion of the perfume’s ingredients. And this makes me happy, at the same time suggesting to me the origin and philosophical principles of Neela’s story. I could never say about Trayee that it is all about woody or spicy or green or floral or incense facets. Its almost a chameleon. I don’t remember that I have ever read more than a dozen articles on some other perfume which ingredients are described more diversely than Trayee’s notes. Cardamom, jasmine, and Mysore sandalwood are some of the materials that I love, they have always been among my favorite ingredients in perfumery, and are just magnificent and of the highest quality in Neela Vermeire Trayee.

Trayee is like the most profound, mysterious music, with a myriad of exotic and new, but a little bit different with each performance. Its materials,  like musical instruments, alternately giving each other a leading place, unafraid of being overshadowed by the beauty of the others.  The harmony of the whole composition is wondrous. The fact is for me that I can’t predict  the next Trayee performance, but I am, based on all previous wearings, confident that it will be time and again brilliant; for this the reason why I call it a modern masterpiece. Indeed, music based on Trayee exists, and it is the art of Marie-Anouch Sarkissian, and Parfum & Musique. Neela Vermeire is well known as a lover of music and art in general, which is reflected in the excellent and original Neela Vermeire Creations pages on Facebook, and Instagram.

2005 – Damir and his beautiful wife

Neela Vermeire Creations astonishing perfumes ultimately brought me something in a niche sphere that has captured my heart.  In the meantime, when the award winning Ashoka was introduced, it has become the precious perfume of my wife, so her  perfumes are  very much present in our house.  Were Neela Vermeire perfumes what I expected? They were much more because no one prepared me for such a flow of high-quality materials. Although I would read many praises about ingredients, it is different when you get the picture on your own. I remain faithful to these exquisite perfumes, being happy whenever Neela Vermeire announces a new creation. Besides, in the context of the present state of niche, Neela Vermeire Creations stands as a house that reminds us of what is niche supposed to be and what it was only a few years ago.

The question that remains unanswered is, would my  Fragrant Awakening be another Neela Vermiere Creations perfume if I, instead of Trayee, firstly had smelled Mohur? I think so. Her work with Bertrand Duchaufor is astounding.

Top notes: blue ginger from Madagascar, elemi oil, cinnamon bark, ganja effects, blackcurrant absolute, basil,  Heart notes: Sambac jasmine absolute, Egyptian jasmine absolute, cardamom absolute, clovesaffron, sandalwood, Base notes: Javanese vetiver, Haitian vetiver, incense, Mysore sandalwood oil, patchouli, myrrh, vanilla, cedar, amber notes, oudh palao from Laos, oakmoss

DISCLOSURE: Opinions are my own, and based on my personal fragrant way. No perfumes have been provided for this story. Photos show pieces from my personal collection, unless otherwise noted

  • I thoroughly enjoyed Damir’s journey through different eras of perfumery and especially of how integral perfume was in the life of the Croatia of his boyhood. Who knew the Croatian oakmoss was a prized ingredient in some of those older creations? This was only one of the many interesting tidbits that jumped out to me from Damir’s excellent article. Every person’s fragrant awakening is so deeply unique. Alas, I have not yet tried any of Neela Vermeire’s creations, but have always wanted to do so. It would be a pleasure to finally dip my toe in with Trayee. Thanks so much to Neela Vermeire for such generosity! I’m in Oregon, US.

  • Quite a history – and collection! I’ve never sampled anything from Neela but I’ve enjoyed a number of Mr. Duchaufour’s creations – the namesake fragrance from Aedes in particular.

Those top notes sound amazing. Looking forward to exploring this line.

  • Oh wow please let me be lucky this. I have sampled Trayee and absolutely love it. This to me is just one of the best. Thanks for the great review and the opportunity. Living in the EU

  • I always love to read stories about other perfume collectors and their fragrant journey. My favorite scent from my line is Rahele and I am excited about this draw. I live in the USA.

  • Shamrock1313 says:

The story of the journey is amazing! Haven’t tried any from the line, but definitely sounds very good.

  • I would absolutely love to experience the chameleon phases of Trayee! On my wishlist it goes! I like wearing Bombay Bling! Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! USA

  • It is wonderful and rare when a fragrance just pushes all of your buttons and never fails to work for you. I’ve never smelled Trayee but it is often mentioned as a love on boards and blogs. Great essay!

  • The fragrance awakening, like Damir’s description of Trayee, is profound. And what we share on this site is that we all had our awakenings. And the beauty is is that there are numerous ones, each time a note or accord captures our imagination. The only part I diverge is re: Brut. When I smell a “guy’s guy” wearing jeans, work boots, a tee shirt dusted with dirt and a barely perceptible trail of Brut deodorant, I definitely get “the feels”. I live and walk in scent in the USA.

  • Trayee has been on my Luckyscent wishlist for quite some time now. I have never sampled it before, but based on the notes, and the overwhelming positive reviews, and love for it, I feel like I need to own a bottle of this. Unfortunately, I have not tried anything from this house as of yet. Thanks for the draw. US.

  • carlos_lager says:

It was very interesting to read about Damirs fragrance journey. I didnt know any of the domestic croatian brands he listed. From the perfumes that were listed above, my favorite is probably Guerlains Habit Rouge. I have smelled Neela Vermeires Trayee before and it is very beautiful. Was an instant love for me. I would love to own a bottle, so thank you very much for the opportunity to win one. Greetings from Austria, EU

  • That is one impressive note lineup. The ‘minds eye’ of my nose is having a hard time figuring out what this would smell like. This review gave great insight into the history and helped expand my knowledge a bit! From Canada.

  • Great read. This fragrance sounds very unique and intriguing. Would love to win it! I have never tried anything in her collection. I’m in Canada and thanks for the draw

  • I love Damir’s story and how even with the restrictions he dealt with in his life growing up in a relatively closed off country of Yugoslavia he still managed to find such a wonderful selection of international and local scents. I’m so glad he and his wife both enjoy Neela’s creations, they are all so lovely. My favorite is probably Mohur or Ashoka but, Trayee is gorgeous as well. Thanks for the draw, I’m in the US.

  • I lived through the same experiences as Damir in my youth, coming from the Ex-You myself. I live in USA for the last 20 years but my love for perfumes was born there, in my childhood. Maybe it was the scarcity of the socialist market Damir is talking about that made a lot of us so enamored in these precious liquids. I remember the beautiful Khadine and Shanida, Chique and It (by Yardley), Apple Blossom (Helena Rubinstein), Renato Balestra…then there were these solid, waxy perfumes packed like lipsticks that our pharma companies made. I did few trips to Trieste (Capriccio was the name of a perfume popular with teenage girls), several more to Greece, since I lived in Macedonia, at the south end of the country. And those free-shops at the border were always so exiting. Thank you for the trip down the memory lane Damir and thank you Neela for your beautiful creations and for this offer.

  • Great article. I’ve only had the chance to smell Bombay Bling from Neela Vermeire house but i agree 101% with Damir “ They were much more because no one prepared me for such a flow of high-quality materials.” For Trayee i can see a huge, huge notes list, must be another great juice and i would love to try it. Thanks for the chance, i’m in the EU

  • Neela vermiere fragrances have been on my radar for a while but it is a house that I need to explore I loved the authors fascination with india and niche. I am intrigued by the notes. From UK

  • I loved Damir’s fascination with flowers and colours. I have got a soft spot for Neela vermiere and India. I have not tried anything from this house but hope to very soon. Cheers from UK

  • I enjoyed Damir’s history with NVC. I especially like how it fits into the spiral progress of his passion for perfumes. My favourite is still Mohur but I do love Trayee a lot. That sandalwood in the drydown gorgeous.

Thank you for the draw! I live in EU.

  • It is always very interesting to know the stories that are hidden behind the creations of a perfume, the passion and love of the perfumer, for me he is like a painter, the result of his work conveys emotions. I have nothing of Neela Vermeire, thank you very much for this fascinating story.

  • The Plum Girl says:

What a story! We coped, we managed to get our hands on perfume, we loved!
    Neela definitely deserves more attention.
    Congratulations Damir!
(Not entering the draw, simply enjoying the read)

  • Trayee! I would so much like this perfume especially because it contains the real sandalwood of mysore, India is a country that I also dream to visit.I love this quote from Damir: “Trayee is like the most profound, mysterious music, with a myriad of exotic and new, but a little bit different with each performance “. Thanks to Neela Veirmeire. I live in France (European Union).

  • What I loved most about the review was how even though people who love perfume come from all walks of life , that span the globe. We can all form a connection to a shared hobby , and to learn another’s journey makes you connect and reflect on your own.

    Incredibly thought provoking.

    From the Eu.

  • So many perfumes Damir mention such as Insense, Basala, The Dreamer, Voyageur, Jaipur Homme and Bvlgari Black are the ones I also love, with the exception maybe Voyageur which I think is the weakest link in Patou’s offerings. Damir’s story reminds us social media has been quite helpful to certain niche brands. I think most niche brands are putting out banale creations but when a niche fragrance brand does it well like Neela, it does get good attention. My fav. in Neela’s line is Mohur. I am in US

  • Enjoyed Damirs journey through scent from childhood forward. And lived reading his descriptions of Trayee. I adore Bombay Bling, though I haven’t pulled the trigger on a full bottle. Would love to try Trayee as I know it is adored.

  • what an interesting “biography”. as fascinating as trayee’s notes. i remember reading something about trayee, mohur & bombay bling long ago, but have not been fortunate to wear any of them yet

  • I fragrant awakening I can identify with including all the classic fragrances mentioned and the reluctance to embrace social media. Trayee is a personal fave and I couldn’t be happier should I be picked for the draw. US

  • I’ve read this article with great interest. I’ve just had an opportunity to test almost all N.Vermeire creations. And I purchased a bottle of Ashoka (it was a choice of Damir’s wife as well!) which I discover again every day. So I am quite familiar with what Damir’s wrote here: “wearing it many times I’ve found tiny differences in the diffusion of the perfume’s ingredients”.
As I have a sample of Trayee I could wear it a few times now. Yesterday, for instance ,I clearly detected agar wood.
This is the case with all her fragrances. I am really a fan of her work.
I would like to win Trayee of course. I am from Poland.

  • In an odd way, I actually enjoy the smell of ganja. Weird, I know. Neela Vermeire is always providing absolutely luxurious fragrances. I’m interested in giving this one a wear. USA

  • Damir’ s experience of a fragrance awakening really resonated with me. Scent is a powerful sense and I have experienced strong associations with memories (good and bad) when I smell a certain fragrance. I never smelled any Neela Vermeire Creations before but I would love to try Trayee. I’m in the US.

  • As an avid music lover and guitar player, Damir’s description of Trayee resonated with me as “the most profound, mysterious music” with “materials, like musical instruments, alternately giving each other a leading place” to achieve a “wondrous harmony”. One of my top favorites is Habit Rouge as well and, while still very green at this, I can totally relate to his fragrance journey. First time hearing about Neela Vermeire so I do not have a favorite. Best from Boston, USA.

  • Damir started so young! Amazing. And what a memory. I definitely could not name the scents from my youth… except Tabu. I’ve not tried Neela Vermeire Creations, but Damir makes it seem that I really must try Trayee. I am in the USA.

  • Trayee is an amazing scent. So much fun to read about a scent journey. We all have them but sometimes we are not aware how much scents effect us. Thank you f;or sharing. I love Mohur. USA

  • Wonderful review! I’ve had an encounter with Trayee few years ago, when my perfume journey had just begun and my memory of it is very faint, but I remember being something that I haven’t sniffed before, truly different. Would love to have it in my collection. I’m in EU.

  • This was a lovely read. I can imagine it was difficult to be a perfumista in that time in Yugoslavia. But designer scents are often quite good, and niche scents are often overpriced.
I have not tried anything from this line, but i heard a lot of good things about it, so i would love to win a bottle. I live in Germany.

  • Sunny Chaudhary says:

Damir’s review is awesome and plus the collection 😀

  • I really enjoyed Damir’s story about his becoming perfume-lover. I like L’air du Temps, Chanel no. 19, YSL Kouros, Fahrenheit, Dior Homme, Memoire D’homme too. Simple, but very beautiful description of Trayee. Unfortunately, I’ve never tested Trayee, but wish to have this “musical harmony”.

  • Rincoglionita says:

I am not a very thoughtful perfumista and I lack Damir’s ability to express how he feels about scents, but I very much enjoyed this tale of discovery. One of my all-time favorites is Pichola, and I have wanted to try other Neela Vermeire fragrances for years. Maybe I’ll get the chance now….

  • I really enjoyed reading about Damir’s fragrance journey. It was really interesting to read about his experience from locally made fragrances to designers and finally how he found Neela Vermeire Creations and just clicked with them. I have not tried any of her perfumes yet but would love to. In the U.S. Thanks for the draw.

  • Theresa Paulin says:

Neela Vermeire Creation have been on my sniff list for awhile. I have read so much about them and its exciting to see that Trayee inspired Damirs awakening. I know i need to bump these up on my sample list! From Damir’s description and the list of notes Trayee sounds sumptuous. There have been so many perfumes that awakend and shocked my senses ..a lot of Duchoufor creations are among them. I feel i am constantly finding surprises and look forward to an awakening on the level of Damirs. I live in the us.

  • What an interesting journey Damir has had. So many different fragrances and yet a tremendous loyalty to Trayee. I also like Trayee and Bombay Bling. I second his feeling about Betrand Duchaufour’s creations. Thanks for an interesting read and a generous draw. I’m in the USA

I enjoyed experiencing the frankness of this article and reading about Damir’s love for Designer fragrances in his youth reminded me so much of how I got into fragrances.

I’ve heard a lot about Neela Vermeire’s perfumes through this blog, but I haven’t had a chance to sniff any.

    Love from Madison, WI

  • Reading each of your comments, I am happy that you like my Fragrant Awakening. Some of you find similarities with your own fragrant stories, and others know about everyday life in my region or how it was a long time ago. I am touched by all your comments and interest you show for Neela Vermeire Creations’ perfumes.
Big thanks to Cafleurebon, and Editor-in-Chief Michelyn Camen for publishing this article. Thank you, Neela Vermiere, for such beautiful perfumes, and generous draw of Trayee. I appreciate it so much.

  • “Were Neela Vermeire perfumes what I expected? They were much more because no one prepared me for such a flow of high-quality materials. Although I would read many praises about ingredients, it is different when you get the picture on your own.” This is so true. That is why we love niche – you never know what you will get. I discovered 2 of Neela Vermeire creations just recently – Bombay Bling and Rahele, love both but Rahele is totaly my cup of tea. Would love to try Trayee and Mohur as well!
Thank you, Neela Vermeire and Cafleurebon, for such generosity, I am from Latvia, EU.

  • I always love to read stories about passionate people fragrant journey.
Trayee must be an amazing scent. I have not tried anything from this house.

  • What an amazing prose! Like Damir, I also like Azzaro. Interestingly I got to know it more closely after getting married as it is the signature scent of my father in law! When the author talks about his reawakening, it immediately reminded me of going back to oud, that is part of Subcontinent culture (where I’m originally from) over thousands of years – thanks in part to Nikhil Sharan and Sultan Pasha. It would great if I win Trayee as I have yet to sample anything from Neela Vermeire Creations. Thanks a lot for sharing your very enjoyable fragrance journey with us, Mr. Gašljević! (East Midlands, UK)

  • Michael Prince says:

I enjoyed reading and learning about Damir Gašljević and their fragrant awakenings. Versace The Dreamer, Dior Farenheit, and Davidoff Cool Water have always been some of my favorites from their collection. Neela Vermeire Creations Trayee is an interesting fragrance. I like how the perfumer uses all natural ingredients used in Indian ceremonies. I would love to try this fragrance. I am from the USA.

  • Fragrance awakening stories I really enjoy. I like Neela Vermeire is honoring her background with Trayee , and the fact the fragrance is not linear.
    Mystery fragrance I guess.
Never smelled anything from Neela Vermeire , but saw a few Sebastian reviews on YouTube , and also i know the brand is loved by most contributors on Cafleurebon , especially Michelyn .
    Thank you

Top quality ingredients fragrance, created by one of the best perfumers out there Bertrand Duchaufour . Spicy and balsamic fragrances and well suited for the autumn, especially if there’s a hefty dose of cardamom .

Thank you Damir for sharing your fragrance journey with us.

  • I found Trayee to be a wonderful perfume. It’s my favorite from Neela Vermeire’s creations. It’s fun to read Damir’s fragrant awakening. I think all perfumelovers will recognise themself. Most of us started out with mainstreams and later moved on to niche and indie. Wonderful to read these stories. Thanks for this story and the opportunity to win a bottle of Trayee. I live in EU.

  • I thought it was inspired.l and profound. I love to read about these all the time.
    I love Ashoka.

  • Neela Vermeire has captured my attention more than a few times, especially with Bombay Bling! Though I’ve never smelled any of her creations, I just know I would love Trayee — the incredible and vast note lineup and your description of the quality of the ingredients makes it almost irresistible. Also, I love the included image of the Trayee patinting – very beautiful and would be nice to have on the wall in my bedroom 🙂

  • Reading Damir fragrance story was captivating . I’ve heard the name dozens of times, but never had a chance to smell Neela Vermeire fragrances.
Spicy balsamic orientals are hard to resist.
    Just followed both @dgambas and @neelavermeirecreations .
Thank you for the draw. USA

  • Damir really has quite the journey in his life of perfume from his childhood until now. I really appreciate his story and was so happy his wife and him share love for perfume too. His collection of vintage was incredible
I am new to the niche world so I would be excited to win
    I live in the EU

  • It was so interesting to read about this fragrant journey, from Kouros till now. I find Trayee sounds fascinating, with its vibe comparable to the sounds of an orchestra opening gracefully to the listener. Unfortunately i never tried anything from this house. Thanks for the draw! From EU.

  • It was pleasure to read about Damir’s perfume-journey- I immediately remembered my first steps in perfumery. I have not yet tried any of Neela Vermeire’s creations, but have always wanted to do so, because I like Bertrand Duchaufour’s creations and read so many beautiful reviews. Ginger, jasmine, spices..sounds very interesting. And I liked very much Damir’s description that ingredients play as music. I would like to win this beauty.

  • “Born in the year of Guerlain Chamade,” – I love this! Now I’m going to go find out what perfumes came out the year I was born. I too am a big fan of designer houses as much as artisanal indies. I love Neela Vermeire, especially Pichola and Trayee, and would love it if her stuff was more easily available to sample in Canada, where I’m from! Thank you for the draw.

  • m.r.everything says:

Damir’s fragrant journey has been a pretty amazing one! I felt like I was with him in Croatia as he was guiding us through this beautiful journey. I love how he got to know Neela Vermeire through Trayee…. I have had my eye on Neela and her brand for quite some time. I just have not had the opportunity to do so…. yet! There are so many brands and certain fragrances on my list to try, but Neela Vermeire Creations is one that is definitely at the top of my list! One of my favorite perfumers, besides Sarah McCartney of course, is Bertrand Duchaufour! When doing research years ago, I found that Bertrand was the perfumer for Neela’s creations and I was just ecstatic! I am kicking myself for taking this long to dive into her brand, but that is going to change! I will be ordering a sample kit very soon! I am afraid I am going to have to get another job in order to afford all of the masterpieces I am going to want once I smell them! Thank you, Damir, for this amazing fragrant journey and thank you for opening my eyes (again) to this amazing brand! I look forward to the next fragrant journey! I I am now looking forward to getting samples and eventually a full bottle! (Of several…) Thank you Michelyn and team CaFleureBon for putting this together and thank you Neela Vermeire for your generosity and beautiful creations! This is an awesome and super generous opportunity! I live in Delaware, US! I hope you all have a great rest of the day and good luck to all!

  • Dear Damir, thank you for this fascinating account of your scent memories, I enjoyed it immensely, as well as learned many fascinating facts (Croatian oakmoss, real musks, etc).
I’m personally grateful and humbled that you have shared my pieces of writing, along with those of some of the best fragrance writers/reviewers out there, out of sheer love for perfume.
Your pure enthusiasm and kind heart should be recognized by us all, exactly like Michelyn has done by naming you “most valuable perfume person” 5 years ago.
Having your Fragrant Awakening hosted in ÇaFleureBon not only feels entirely well-deserved, but absolutely natural, as well!
As for your choice, the splendid Trayee is my personal favorite Neela Vermeire fragrance, too, along with Bombay Bling.
Thank you all for this wonderful piece, and to lovely Neela for her generosity!

  • Enjoyed this story. Many notes on this fragrance and good ones. Heard great things about Bertrand Duchaufour as well. Thank You for this draw, Ca

  • Damir story brought me back to the 90’s with me , and my fragrance awakening. Long story short I’m closing 300 bottles , mostly niche. Once you get into fragrance hobby, there’s no way out.
I was able to sample Mohur Extrait at Esxence 2018 , and i do like it a lot , the mango one called Bombay Bling is really good too. Esxence is surreal experience for every fragrance lover, but it is overwhelming, you just can’t smell everything , it’s not possible.
If Trayee is on pair with Mohur Extrait , and Bombay Bling I’m expecting fireworks.
    Thank you for your generosity.

  • I really enjoyed your story, Darmir, and you picked a good house to get excited about! Trayee is beautiful, and I also love the Indian back story, but I love everything from Neela Vermeire. I think my favorite is Ashoka or Bombay Bling.

It’s so interesting to hear the experiences of those who grew up in the former socialist republics of Eastern Europe. I loved reading about how Damir experienced so many different eras and genres of perfume as he went through life, and the idea of trying a ‘chameleon fragrance’ has always fascinated me, as I’ve never worn one that reveals a different facet of itself with every wearing as Trayee does for Damir. Trayee has been on my wishlist ever since I first heard about it! I have not tried anything from Neela Vermeire Créations yet. My favorite perfume that Damir mentioned is Bvlgari Black, and I am in the US 🙂

  • Trayee seems to have multiple personalities and performs in mysterious ways. That, to me, is the biggest draw. VA, USA.

  • Throwback again 🙂 Good old days, not knowing what niche fragrances are, and how much time and money our hobby consumes.
Natural smelling Oriental fragrance, heavy on the cardamom , resins and smoke is what I think of right now.
I have not tried Neela Vermeire fragrances.
    Thank you

  • I really enjoyed this review and Damir’s journey! I love reading about personal collections and paths to perfume. I absolutely love Neela’s creations and I would love to win Trayee. Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!

  • I really love the incense/spices in this fragrance. I haven’t tried anything from Neela Vermeire but really enjoyed the review of Fragrant Awakenings.
    I live in the US.

  • We all went through different phases of our fragrance journeys, such a fun to read article.
After all the positive attention, I decided to buy Neela Vermeire discovery set from Luckyscent. 5 Loves, and one Not for me I what I get from the set. The only one I would not wear is Pichola .
Speaking about Trayee, it is really milky fragrances that smells really similar to Ras Malai , traditional Indian dessert. Lactonic without a doubt, yet spicy and calming. As a long time Pastry Chef, I’m sure Neela Vermeire told Bertrand Duchaufour to create a fragrance that would smell like Ras Malai.
I’m not sure what’s my favorite Neela Vermeire Bombay Bling, Mohur Extrait or Trayee.
One important note to all considering getting Neela Vermeire discovery set , you will receive six samples Rahele, Pichola, Ashoka, Bombay Bling,Mohur and Trayee . Mohur and Extrait Niral samples are not not included in the discovery set, and you will have to pay extra if you want to smell the two. I know it was my fault not to look at the description of the discovery set.
Appreciate Damir sharing his story, and the giveaway campaign.

As a musician, the moment “mysterious music” was mentioned, I was sold! I need to try all Neela Vermeire fragrances now, and experience my own awakening.

If the draw is still open, I would love to enter. I’m in Canada.

  • I thoroughly enjoy how colourful and unpredictable his journey is..from Guerlain, very distinctive commercial releases from fashion houses and now Neela Vermeire. Its very colourful, meaningful and feels authentic. Somewhat it mirrors my own journey as well. My favourite is Trayee followed by Mohur. Based in Canada.

  • The story of the notes being like a spiraling cosmic scent is amazing! I have not tried any from the line, but definitely sounds very superb.

  • Damir’s fragrant journey was an inspirational one. Growing in a country which didn’t have such intensive tradition in perfumery and getting to know, appreciate and seek beauty in fragrances, from the classics till the “truest” niche. I would love to smell Trayee with its fascinating blend of notes. Never tried anything from Neela Vermeire before. Thanks for the draw! From the EU.
