ÇaFleureBon 2017 Best Fragrances + Part 2 Draw

Now that you read what Ermano Picco and Michelyn thought were the Best (and Worst) Perfumes of 2017, next up are ÇaFleureBon Senior Editor’s Ida Meister and Robert Herrmann’s 2017 Best Fragrances:

Robert Herrmann and Ida Meister, Senior Editors' 2017 Best Fragrances

Some folks really adore compiling these lists; I KNOW everyone enjoys reading them, including me. You’ve probably guessed that this sort of thing is a personal nightmare because I appreciate all the efforts perfumers make. Some are given very specific briefs which they are obligated to fulfill; others are starting out and in the infancy of honing their craft/art. Still others are busily exploring olfactory terra incognita.  Here’s my caveat: I’m listing ten wonderful perfumes IN NO SPECIFIC ORDER OF PREFERENCE. I refuse to be accused of favoritism, toadyism, or any other form of ISM. That’s my promise to you, much-loved readers – and the equally dear perfumers.

Here are my 2017 Best Fragrances:

*Aftelier Velvet Tuberose (Mandy Aftel): for its voluptuous, heady floral veracity (and MITTI!!!) and sensuous texture upon flesh. A dear friend purchased this as a gift; I’ll treasure every anointment.

*Ineke Idyllwild (Ineke Ruhland): it brings us the wild outdoors in a gorgeous flacon. I’ve decanted mine like mad already for so many beloveds.

DSH Perfumes Foxy (*Dawn Spencer Hurwitz): call me any name you like; friendship has nowt to do with it. It’s a second skin which I purchased on a very limited income in oil, perfume, cream, and EDP. That alone reveals how sexy and marvelous it is.

Sonoma Scent Studio Bee’s Bliss (Laurie Erickson): so wistful, wearable, dreamy...a Perfume of Hope and belief in all good things.

Ida and John Biebel

January Scent Project Eiderantler*(John Biebel): nuzzle the forest, the fields of lavender and be comforted. A completely original rendering of the fougère which makes it everyone’s darling.

Fitzgerald and Guislain La Fôret de Fontainbleau (Ian Fitzgerald and Alexander Chesebro): If only some vintages were this fine! Smoky, floral, woody, divine – and then there’s the gorgeous presentation, longevity. Ahhhhhhhhhh.

*April Aromatics Pink Wood (Tanja Bochnig): sweet satori for a rose/wood perfume-lover like myself. You needn’t choose: it’s all there in every drop of exquisite contemplative perfume.

Maison Mona Di Orio Suède de Suède (Frederic Dalman):how could I possibly resist this Scandinavian call-of-the-wild, complete with furry reindeer pelts and cloudberry? Subtle, fabulous, ingenious. Let’s spend the winter in Sweden.

Tom Ford Noir Anthracite (Honorine Blanc): surprise, surprise! One sniff in Sephora, and I murmured (to myself, since no one else gives a damn.  Hot Diggity! Here’s a throwback, a variant of Jolie Madame marketed to guys! Next time, I’m buying myself a bottle. Give a good long sniff, THEN get back to me…

*Shalini Jardin Nocturne (Maurice Roucel): what??? You think you’ve figured out Maurice Roucel? Think again: this sultry floral oud is aptly named, deftly burnished and arrestingly Arabic in feel. I’m grateful for the few drops I was given – it’s the real deal.

Ida Meister, Senior Editor

2017 Best Fragrances

In 2016 alone there were in excess of 2300 new perfume releases, and 2017 which hasn’t ended yet has already exceeded that number. Phew. I don’t know about you, but I’m exhausted. Fortunately I tend to keep good notes, and there were so many wonderful releases this year it was very difficult to choose, but here they are, the 10 perfumes of 2017 that for whatever reason I loved and reach for the most. In alphabetical order…

Amouage Figment Man (Annick Menardo and Christopher Chong): Christopher Chong’s figment of his imagination regarding a dreamlike Bhutan, is a stunning olfactive story in a bottle that transported me over the cold blustery Himalayas into the legendary paradise of Shangri-La, replete with beautiful gardens, swaths of florals running riot all firmly planted in an earthy and fecund gardenscape. Scented storytelling at its finest.

Atelier Cologne Café Tuberosa (Jérôme Epinette): 2017 was clearly the “War Of The (tuber)Roses, and Café Tuberosa was one of the standouts for me. An unforgettable white floral and buttery tuberose made gourmand with a hefty dose of coffee, vanilla, cacao, and cardamon.

DSH Perfumes Il Marinaio Da Capri (Dawn Spencer Hurwitz): No surprise that Dawn Spencer Hurwitz is on my list. She is so prolific, with so many outstanding perfumes year after year, but Il Marinaio Da Capri (The sailor from Capri) spoke straight to my heart. A perfumed tribute to my parents favorite island, this is a perfume that captures all that is essential to Capri, from the seawater lapping against the dock, to the tumbling geraniums filling the flower boxes on a dry sun-parched stone wall.

Filigree Perfumes Unequal (James Elliot): It’s no secret that I love BWF’s (Big White Florals) and Seattle Indie perfumer James Elliot spared no expense in sourcing the finest ingredients for Unequal, his beautiful interpretation of sound-artist Holly Herndon’s music. Jonquils, lilies, and lilacs fill the air in this one-of-a-kind extraordinary 100% all natural and vegan perfume.

*Frederic Malle/ Alber Ebaz Superstitious (Dominique Ropion): Fill my house with roses, and I am a very happy camper indeed, and Malle’s release of Superstitious does exactly that. Armfuls of roses, exquisitely blended as only Dominique Ropion can provide, in this modern interpretation of a very classic 1950’s perfume. Tons of aldehydes, shots of jasmine and peach all resting comfortably on a boudoir pillow of labdanum, patchouli and sandalwood.

Robert H's Bottle of Twilly d'Hermes

Hermes Twilly (Christine Nagel): Another entry in the “Tuber-race” of 2017”, and one that fits me to a tee. I have a very soft spot for anything Hermes, and this cheerful and bright perfume in the squat bottle topped with a derby cap made me grin from ear to ear. With only 3 listed notes (tuberose, ginger, sandalwood) Twilly turns out to be floral, creamy, and zingy at the same time; an absolute joy to wear.

*Parfums M. Micallef Ananda Tchaï (Jean-Claude Astier & Geoffrey Nejman): A marvelous floral tea and spice infused perfume, and it was the ONLY full bottle I asked the Holiday gods & goddesses for. If I had to say any perfume for 2017 was (in Tom Fords words…) “Fu#@&%g Fabulous” this would be it. Its beauty is quite simply jaw-dropping.

2017 Best Fragrances

Solstice Scents Guardian  (Angela St. John): Solstice Scents followers are legion, and her perfumes are often sold out within an hour of going on sale. Guardian created in collaboration with Cafleurebon’s 2017 Talisman Project, is an ambered chypre photorealistic trip to the High Sonoran Desert of the Southwest, full of sage, piñon, and tumbleweed. This is a mystical and enchanted perfume, an olfactive genie-in-a-bottle that you will return to again and again.

Tauer Perfumes L’Eau (Andy Tauer): I always feel as if I’m living my best life when the sun is shining, and Andy Tauer’s latest interpretation on a classic Eau De Cologne, was my favorite warm weather scent this year by a long shot! Full of juicy lemon and orange, with lemon blossom floralcy, hints of Iris, and a skin scent vibe of ambergris, this is a cooling breeze at the end of a beautiful warm day.

Photo by Robert H  of MUGLER Aura

*Mugler Aura (Daphne Bugey, Amandine Clerc-Marie, Christophe Reynaud, Marie Salamagne): Although not available for sale in the USA until February 2018, I was fortunate enough to receive a bottle from a friend in the EUA where it was released this year. Mugler Aura is pure magic to my nose, the most accessible to date, with a great opening rhubarb note, and two heretofore rarely seen Firmenich ingredients; Tiger Liana© and Wolf Wood©, which provide intriguing asian medicinal and animalic woody notes. And that bottle… the green heart of Elphaba from “Wicked”, full of seemingly poisonous ingredients which will lull you into an enchanted fugue-state.

Zoologist Camel (Christian Carbonnel): Last but certainly not least, Camel by Zoologist Perfumes is this year’s Civet; a fragrance so great I just couldn’t wait to write about it back in October, (and pestered Creative Director Victor Wong to no end for a sample). And it is worth the wait. A dried-fruit laden spiced wonder with a soft furry purr, Camel is a contemporary homage to classics like Arpege and My Sin and you will wonder how you lived without it, it’s just that good.Robert Herrmann, Sr. Editor

  • Good to see the Amouage and Ineke and Mona di Orio scents, all indicating that the veterans can still do good work. I live in the US and would enjoy all of the perfumes in the draw, but especially Figment, Suede de Suede, Idyllwild, and Foxy.

  • Claudia Kroyer says:

Why oh why did I read this. Now I need the Micallef Ananda Chai in my life also and I was so happy to see that Twilly and Aura are both loved as I love them also. Ida I agree with you on Eiderantler and purchased a bottle the moment I smelled it. Its a hidden beauty. Thank you for those beautiful reviews. Micallef Chai come to mama

  • I haven’t smelled any of these in Part II either, yet I thoroughly enjoy reading this every year.

    – Amouage Figment Man
    – Suede de Suede – MdO
    – Zoologist Camel
    – Ineke Idyllwild
    USA

  • I’d especially like to thank Ida for her review on Noir Anthracite. I went to smell it and indeed I got that Germaine Cellier leathery vibe which I absolutely love. It’s on my wishlist!
Thanks again for the draw. I’d love to get my nose on Suede de Suede or Camel. I live in EU.

  • Really great list and nice to see Amouage getting some love. I am reading the first list and will enter that one too. I want to try Amouage Figment Man so badly, also Idllywild beause I really like Ineke. Suede de Suede from Mona di Orio sounds nice as well

  • Anything DSH is great in my opinion! However I sampled Cafe Tuberosa and the coffee was too much for me and did not like it at all.

I’m in the US, and any of the list would be great, but Camrl and Fihment Man would be on the top of the list. Thanks!

  • I have smelled more of today’s list. Bees Bliss is one I bought at first sniff. Tauer L’eau made it on my buy list for Christmas and I have a small bottle of Twilly. I am in the fence regarding cafe Tuberosa; it does something weird on my skin sometimes.

I would love to try Pink Wood, Foxy, Camel, the Shalini Jardin Nocturne and ineke Idyllwild. I am in the US.

  • Oh, how I love these year-end lists!
It seems my nose is very much in tune with Ida’s and Robert’s this year, since they have each named some of my favorites. But there are quite a few on their lists I haven’t yet tried, so I plan to take their lists as inspiration for further investigation!

I need to get my nose on April Aromatics Pink Wood, Ineke Idyllwild, DSH Marinaio da Capri, and oh my word, the Micallef Ananda Chai sounds like it was crafted just for me!

I remain in beautiful, snowy and icy cold Chicago, IL, USA.

  • This Camel from Zoologist got some hype in the last months. Almost every review goes for “really great” or “amazing” on this juice. Now i’m really curious about it so it would be great to win this draw 🙂 also after the camel hype, i heard a lot of good things about pink wood from april aromatics, so would be awesome to have the chance and try that one. In fact i have never tried anything from april aromatics. I live in the EU, thank you for this chance.

  • I am pretty sure Ida and Robert’s choices are very good as they know their business. I never had the opportunity to try any of the fragrances mentioned in the article. Although “Aura” and “Twilly” are present in the stores, I was not really interested in them to be fair.
    I would love to win:
    – Suède de Suède by Mona di Orio
    – Foxy by DSH Perfumes
    – Camel by Zoologist Perfumes
    – Eiderantler by January Scent Project
I live in the E.U. Thank you for this draw.

  • Elizabeth T. says:

What a great list! I’m completely on board with Tauer’s L’Eau and SSS Bee’s Bliss, both of which I really enjoy! I think that I’d feel the same way about January Scent Project Eiderantler if I’d smelled it… that one calls to me.

I’m in the USA, and if I could, I would choose Ananda Tchai, Eiderantler, Jardin Nocturne, Camel, Idyllwild, or Bee’s Bliss.

Thank you for another wonderful wonderful list!

  • Having just today tried a sample of Atelier Cologne Café Tuberosa, I have to admit I am not feeling the love. A tuberose paired with the freshly ground earthiness of coffee beans would likely appeal to me more than the coffee drink with tubey flowers floating in it that my nose smelled.

I felt Amouage Figment had a Scandinavian briskness to it that I liked.

I’m in the USA and I’m eyeballing:

Suède de Suède by Mona di Orio
    Camel by Zoologist Perfumes
    Ananda Tchai by Micallef
    Figment Man by Amouage
    Idyllwild by Ineke

  • Zoologist Camel I have heard so much about. I need to get my nose on it because it really does sound like something I would be into. Spice and fur? Heck yes!

Also the Tauer L’Eau just sounds dreamy. I have only ever sniffed Rose Flash from Mr Tauer and that is clearly not good enough.

Please enter me into all Worldwide draws
    april aromatics
    m.micallef
    mona di orio
    january scent project
    DSH perfumes
    solstics scents
    shalini
    zoologist

thank you! I am in Australia. Gosh I am really hoping to win! 🙂

  • Such a good list. I would like to win Suede de suede, but Ananda Tchai too. I have only tried the atelier cologne and hated it and disliked twilly d Hermes
    I dont’s think I am tuberose
I enjoyed reading Amouage figment man so that too
2000 plus perfumes this year is ridiculous
    I live in Canada
    Thanks again
Off to check out the other best fragrance post

  • I feel like Ida and I have similar tastes in perfume! I like a lot of the ones she mentioned 🙂 My favorites mentioned in your lists that I’ve tried were FM Superstitious, Camel and Atelier Cafe Tuberose! Least favorites – Twilly! I need to sample the rest – Bee’s Bliss, Tchai, Eiderantler, anything by DSH, and Pink Wood are on my “to-test” list.

For the Draw, I live in the US,
Please enter me for all of them 🙂 There’s not a single one I wouldn’t love the opportunity to try!

  • BostonScentGuy says:

These lists are making me realize how many new releases I’ve missed this year! I’ve been dying to try Camel (and any of the Zoologists, for that matter). I know I love Mandy Aftel and Tuberose, so that solid perfume looks absolutely divine! FM Superstitious was a favorite new release of mine. It reminds me of a more bombastic version of this amazing vintage Arpege extrait I have with monster sillage. Cafe Tuberose is kind of eh for me…and Twilly I did like, but find Nuit de Tubereuse more interesting and overlapping in concept. If I were to win…boy I would love any gift, but especially Amouage Figment Man, Zoologist Camel, Eiderantler, Shalini Nocturne, and Foxy by DSH. Thanks for the draw!

  • It is clear from Robert and Ida’s choices that this year was heavy on tuberoses. I agree with Superstitious and it seems most have found it lovely. Zoologist’s Camel being in the list is no surprise at all. It seems this was the year for natural perfumes, too as Ida has chosen many of them. My choices for this draw will be:

    Amouage Figment Man
Mona Di Orio Suede de Suede
    M. Micallef Anada Tchai

    I am in the US.

  • Barbara Carter says:

Robert and Ida, as usual you have struck gold. I love the lists, and am in agreement on several – Twilly, Figment Man, and Pink Wood. Many I have yet to try. I would add two to the list that have hit my top ten this year, and that is Naja, which is just so unusual and so fabulous, and is such an interesting narcotic beauty, and also Papillion’s Dryad. I have others, but those two are standouts for me.

  • From the best list of 2017 releases, I would like to try Mandy Aftel’s Velvet Tuberose. I have never tried anything from Mandy, but I love the concept and tuberose and what can go wrong then? Also, from Amouage I have not tested anything for a long time, so Figment Man would be really nice to test.

I am from EU and if I were to win I would go for Ananda Tchai and Suede de Suede.

    Thank you!

  • I love lists and what an offering from Ida and Robert! Although I haven’t sampled any of the above, I do own others from the perfumers mentioned.
    My picks for the draw

Pink Wood – Foxy – Camel – Ananda Tchai – Guardian – Shalini – Eiderantler – Suede de Suede
    Thanks
    Australia

  • Great list, I am really interested by January Scent Project, because it seem to be in the same style than Slumberhouse.

I am from Canada, I am more interested in
    Camel
    Edeirantler
    Pink Wood

  • To my shame, the only known fragrance to me from this list is Hermes’ Twilly. Some of them are hard to find whilst others like Mugler’s Aura I just skipped testing when saw them. I would love to test some Tauer fragrances because he created a mythical nimb around him and everything he touches turns to gold.

I live in EU and my picks are: Suede de Suede and Ananda Tchai..

Thanks and good luck to everyone!

  • Here is another wonderful overview of fragrances released in 2017! I love reading your selections. Unfortunately I have not tested all the fragrances mentioned, but I really appreciated Amouage Figment Man and I am very attracted to everything I read about January Scent Project.
    My choices into the draw:
    January Scent Project Eiderantler
Suède de Suède by Mona di Orio
    Camel by Zoologist Perfumes
    I live in EU
    Thanks!

  • Chocolate Marzipan says:

Fantastic list! I have sampled Cafe Tuberosa and Bee’s Bliss and they were both delightful. Would love to win Suede de Suede. Still dreaming of owning a bottle from Mona di Orio. Second choice would be Ananda Tchai.I reside in the USA. Thank you for this draw!

  • I love the choices and can’t wait to try Mugler Aura. Also any new Amouage is a must try for me, one of my favorite lines. Just a classic line and all the bottles are unmistakable!

Thanks I live in the US

    Amouage Figment Man
Maison Mona Di Orio Suède de Suède
    Ineke Idyllwild

  • Richard Potter says:

That time of year again, time to add to my already voluminous want list. I love that Ida has Foxy in all of it’s iterations. That is the one I want. Second choice, Suede de Suede. USA

  • I love the lists from Ida and Robert, understanding the similarities and the differences between them. At the end, is a matter of taste, and like music, some songs make you vibrate and other leaves you half-hearted.
I bought for myself as a Christmas present the Noir Anthracite…enjoying it now in the spanish winter.
I live in EU and my choices in the draw are :
Suède de Suède by Mona di Orio
    Camel by Zoologist Perfumes
    January Scent Project Eiderantler

    Gracias!

  • I like Eiderantler and L’Eau, as well. I have wanted to try Aura and Camel, Micallef and Mona di Orio. I’m in USA.

  • Lovely review referring to the fragrances of 2017, loved Ida’s and Robert’s choices like Mugler’s Aura and Velvet Tuberose, Noir Anthracite and Amouage Figment Man.
    My picks:
    April Aromatics Pink Wood
    M. Micallef Ananda Tchai
Maison Mona Di Orio Suède de Suède
    Zoologist Camel
    January Scent Project Eiderantler
DSH Perfumes Foxy or Il Marinaio Da Capri
    I live in EU.

  • I too am dreaming about Mandy’s tuberose and Dawn’s perfumes -all of them! I don’t see a lot of surprises – it is true that the really “good” perfumes always get the recognition they deserve!
    My choices are:
    April Aromatics Pink Wood
    M. Micallef Ananda Tchai
    SHALINI Jardin Nocturne
Maison Mona Di Orio Suède de Suède
    Ineke Idyllwild
    Zoologist Camel
    January Scent Project Eiderantler
DSH Perfumes Foxy or Il Marinaio Da Capri

  • Nadine Cunningham says:

I’ve heard quite a bit about Zoologist Camel, seems to be a really good one. Idyllwild from Ineke also seems to be a quite amazing fragrance.
    Connecticut USA

  • It’s great that so many independent perfumers are featured and such a wide variety
I would be interested in winning foxy by Dsh perfumes, Sonoma Scent bees bliss. Shalini Jardin nocturne, mona di orio suede and Amouage figment man

  • Very good list in my opinion. However, I did not try those. I very like to read about other persons favorite perfumes. 🙂
I would be very glad, If I would win any of these:
    – April Aromatics Pink Wood
    – M. Micallef 100 ml of Ananda Tchai
    – 75 ml of Maison Mona Di Orio Suède de Suède
    – 30 ml of January Scent Project Eiderantler
    – SHALINI Jardin Nocturne
    – 11ml travel spray of Zoologist Camel
    – DSH Perfumes Foxy or Il Marinaio Da Capri 10 ml roller pulse pen
    – 5 ml of Solstice Scent Guardian
I live in Europe. Thank you!

  • You are right. I do look forward to these lists. Not only to occasionally find out about a perfume I missed during the year, it’s interesting to see what reviewer agrees with my likes or dislikes. I would most love to win:
    April Aromatics Pink Wood
    M.Micallef Ananda Tchai
    January Scent Project Eiderantler
    Shalini Jardin Nocturne
    Ineke Idylwild
    Sonoma Bee’s Bliss

Thank you for the hard work and thanks to the generous perfumers! USA

  • So rich favorit list!!! I like some of them, but many from list I have not tested such a DSH, April Aromatics and etc.
From this lust my favorite is Figment Man Amouage, Ananda Chai.
I would very very hsppy to win
Suède de Suède by Mona di Orio
    Camel by Zoologist Perfumes
    Ananda Tchai by Micallef
    Figment Man by Amouage
    Idyllwild by Ineke
    USA

  • Roger Engelhardt says:

Wow!! Ida and Robert make me want to own all of these!!
The only one I own a full bottle of is Guardian, and yes, it is absolutely amazing!! I own 2 from DSH, Become the Shaman and The Voices of Trees, so again, her work is stellar! Have yet to try Camel, but I have a 60ml of Civet❤️❤️. Also own a few from Sonoma Scent Studio. Have not sampled Figment Man, but still have a few drops of Interlude man. Ineke’s Field Notes from Paris is another love!
So many to choose, here goes:
    Camel
    Bee’s Bliss
    Superstitious
    Figment Man
    Foxy
    Idlyewild
    Pink Wood
    Tom Ford Anthicite
    Or any of them!!
    I live in the USA

  • Great list! I am curious about DSH foxy (such a shame I cannot buy this in EUROPE) and camel by zooligist.
Looking forward to the next read.

    PS I live in Europe.

  • All of these sound and look lovely. I would love to try M. Micallef Ananda Tchai or Maison Mona Di Orio Suede de Suede.
Happy Holidays! I live in Europe

  • Part TWO… Again where to start… with the many many new scents that have captivated the noses of Ida and Robert… True… keeping only to the choices that had unique and stand alone notes of interest! Wise choices indeed! One fragrance that I was given a sample sprayer as a Christmas gift was… Atelier Cologne Café Tuberosa -such an enchanted and smoothly blended cafe/rose scent! Just LOVE!

I really don’t have an opinion toward choosing a least favorite scent without putting my own nose around what others have deemed as creative…

Yes, please count me in again! I do live in the US and my favorite choices from this list are: Amouage Figment Man – Maison Mona Di Orio Suède de Suède – January Scent Project Eiderantler – M. Micallef Ananda Tchai.

    THANK YOU!

  • I would love to win any of these but DSH Capri and Ineke Idylewild in particular. I was lucky enough to visit years ago and it’s everything you would’ve expect it to be then some. Also I am intrigued by the geranium salt air combo. I was also lucky enough to meet Ineke years ago and adore her perfumes. I live in Maryland USA. Thank you!!

  • so many of the favorites are scents that I really want to try and the more that I read about them, the more I want to try. Shalini Jardin Nocturne, Mugler Aura just to name a few. There are so many! I do enjoy the Hermes Twilly – I thought it was a nice change for the house. Tauer L’Eau is also quite interesting (aren’t all of his??). My picks if I’m lucky are:

    Shalini Nocturne
    April Aromatics Pink Wood
    Micallef Ananda Tchai
    Ineke Idyllwild
    Amouage Figment Man

thanks – I am US and registered

  • Another wooow list!
This year I loved a lot of green Tuberoses I smelled, from Perris to Naomi Goodsir, to Paloma y Raices…I think this is one of the successful 2017 themes.
    I’d like to receive
    Camel
    Shalini Nocturne
    Pink Wood
I live in Italy. Thanks for the draw!

  • I love lists! This was such a fun and informative read, thank you. I love gourmand fragrances so Cafe Tuberose will be on my try-list.
    My choices are:
    April Aromatics Pink Wood
    M. Micallef Ananda Tchai
Maison Mona Di Orio Suede de Suede

    I live in Europe

  • I haven’t tried most of these, but many of my favorite scent artists are included! I really want to try DSH’s Foxy–she’s so good with animalics. I did love her Il Marinaio and wore it quite a bit this summer.

    My choices would be:
    -Shalini Jardin Nocturne
    -April Aromatics Pink Wood
    -Zoologist Camel
    -SSS’s Bee’s Bliss

I live in the USA, thank you and Happy New Year! Thanks for all you do.

  • StellaDiverFlynn says:

Thank you for these great lists! I only tried a few from the two lists above, among which Tauer L’Eau is my favourite. Citrus is usually not my cup of tea, but here it’s elevated by the magical Tauerade and a fluffy white musk (no laundry) and I’ve been wearing for quite a few days! I had high hopes for Mona di Orio’s new releases and was intrigued by the interesting notes featured in Atelier Cologne Café Tuberose. But in the end, both turned out quite disappointing on my skin.

My picks for the contests would be:

    DSH Foxy
    Solstice Scents Guardian
    Shalini Jardin Nocturne
    April Aromatics Pink Wood
    Zoologist Camel

I live in France. Thank you for the opportunity!

  • What great lists these are! And, they are both different. My choices would be:
    Shalini Jardin Nocturne
    April Aromatics Pink Wood
    SSS’s Bee’s Bliss.
    I live in the US.

  • These lists are a thrill to read! Ida’s positive opinion of Noir Anthracite surprised me – I had written it off without really smelling it, not having liked many of TF’s masculine releases lately, so I’m excited to rediscover it next time I’m near Sephora. I’m not sure it’s a top choice of the year for me, but Cafe Tuberosa certainly is fun, with an addictive and realistic coffee opening. Otherwise I haven’t tried too many from this list, but I am excited to sample more in the future.

I live in Canada. Should I be chosen to win any of the perfumes I’d love any of the following:

Mona di Orio Suede de Suede
    January Scent Project Eiderantler
    Solstice Scents Guardian
    DSH Perfumes Foxy Roller
    Shalini Nocturne
    Travel spray of Zoologist Camel

  • Really good list and my taste is more in line with Ida. I am really a fan of ineke but Tom Ford Noir anthracite was a surprise. Now I am
    Curious
My choices are ineke Idyllwild, Sonoma scent bees bliss and Dsh foxy

  • I was happy to see Zoologist Camel, Tauer L’Eau and Mugler Aura on the list, because those were some of my favorites from this year also. I didn’t try Suede de Suede, but “reindeer pelts” certainly has me curious now. I’m in the US, and I would love to win Mona di Orio Suede de Suede, Shalini Jardin Nocturne, M. Micallef Ananda Tchai, or Sonoma Scent Bee’s Bliss. Thanks!

  • I have a soft spot for Tom Ford and Hermes and I’m glad to see them being listed. I’m gonna rush to the store to try the Tom ford!

I live in Malaysia and would like to win any of the worldwide draws:

    april aromatics
    m.micallef
    mona di orio
    january scent project
    DSH perfumes
    solstics scents
    shalini
    zoologist

    Thanks

  • So many awesome fragrance releases this year. It drives me nuts when you hear ” This year want a great year in fragrance” . Next person I hear say that, I’ll direct them to this article. I love the wife array of different fragrances that were chosen. And I really like that Robert said that he “appreciates all efforts Perfumers make”changes so many beautiful fragrances that I hadn’t tried and with that I really can’t pick a favorite. I love in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. USA
I’m sure I would love to win any from The list of:
    – Amouage Figment Man
    – Ineke Idyllwild
-Maison Mona Di Orio Suède de Suède
    -M. Micallef Ananda Tchai
    – ZOOLOGIST Camel
    – April Aromatics Pink Wood

  • A chance to win any of the perfumes is indeed a temptation too irrestible but even so without the competition it was with real pleasure that I’ve read the Favourites list from all the contributors. I’ve sampled some of mentioned but not enough……but I love anything from Andy Tauer, Mona di Oreo, DSH, January Scent Project and some of Amouage. May the bes5 one win and Bon Chance! To all…….I live in the U.K.

  • I haven’t tried most of these fine pics, but I see some of the houses I admire, so I am sure the lists are top noch.
I live in the EU and what I’d like to win:
    M. Micallef 100 ml of Ananda Tchai
Maison Mona Di Orio Suède de Suède
    SHALINI Jardin Nocturne
    April Aromatics Pink Wood

  • Again wonderful choices. I would be happy with every price. Thanks again for the draw. I live in EU.

  • Wow, Ida’s list gave me so many new scents to look into that I hadn’t even heard about, or maybe just didn’t remember. And I can’t wait to try Aura, which isn’t coming out in Canada until sometime in 2018, ugh. Out of the list, I would love the Suede de Suede, Foxy, or Camel. Thank you for another great round-up! I live in Canada.

  • Thank you for another wonderful draw! I would be thrilled with any of these:
    Pink Wood
    Ananda Tchai
    Suede de Suede
    Foxy
    Jardin Nocturne
    Idyllwild
    Bee’s Bliss

I live in the USA. I was happy to see how well-received Bee’s Bliss has been, given the awful California wildfires. I really want to know more about Unequal, as I love most florals but narcissus is at the top of my list!

  • The ones that I know about from their list are also on my list! I would be happy with any of them, but since I know I love Dawn and Victor’s scents, put me down for either of theirs. Thank you!

  • Like your choices and I favor Figment Man, Cafe Tuberosa and Superstitious the most from the ones I have tested this year. I would like to win M. Micallef 100 ml of Ananda Tchai, SHALINI Jardin Nocturne or April Aromatics Pink Wood. I’m in the EU.

  • Tom Schroeder says:

Very nice choices by both Ida and Robert. I like Eiderantler, and also John Biebel is a great guy and occasionally posts in the fragrance groups on Facebook. Anything by Dawn Spencer Hurwitz is expertly composed, so Foxy sounds great. Andy Tauer’s L’Eau is so refreshing, I loved it at first sniff. Superstitious and Mugler Aura both sound intriguing. Camel is a good release as well and I am currently exploring it more with a decant. Guardian sounds fascinating. Shalini – must try this if I can find it. Pink Wood and Ananda Tchai also pique my interest. Bee’s Bliss also sounds desirable. California, USA

  • It was interesting to know Robert Herrmann and Ida Meister 2017 favorite perfumes. All perfumes have so nce and interesting short descriptions!!!
I must to try Tom Ford Noir Anthracite after reading this article. Unfortunatly many perfumes from this list I have never tested.
I had so big hopes on Nuit de Bakélite Naomi Goodsir and Gabriell Chanel, but in result only disappointment, although I think there are nice perfumes, but I expected groundbreaking.
    my pics:
    April Aromatics Pink Wood
    M. Micallef Ananda Tchai
Maison Mona Di Orio Suède de Suède
    Zoologist Camel
    SHALINI Jardin Nocturne
    from Armenia
    Thanks !!!

  • Thank you to Ida and Robert for their 2017 Best Fragrances. Ida’s scent choices inspire me to spend more time outdoors. Idyllwild, Foxy, and Bee’s Bliss sound especially tempting. I was glad to see Robert’s list includes Twilly (love Hermes, though this scent is not my favorite) and Tauer L’eau (which I have not yet tried). These fragrances caught my attention more than once this year.

Pink Wood, Eiderantler, Il Marinaio Da Capri, Camel, Idyllwild, and Bee’s Bliss are my must-sniff scents from the generous draw. I am in the US. Thank you for all the fragrant fun here at CaFleureBon.

  • ChanteusedesIles says:

Wow, so many tempting choices! The only one I have tried is the Atelier Cologne Cafe Tuberosa, which I loved and snapped up in the Sephora sale! I love tuberose and white florals in general so it was a good year! The Mandy Aftel Velvet Tuberose sounds beautiful!

I live in Canada and would love to win:
    Naomi Goodsir Nuit De Tuberose
    Shalini Jardin Nocturne
    DSH Parfums Foxy
    M. micallef Ananda Tchai
Mona di Orio Suede de Suede
    Thanks!

  • The only perfumes on the list I’ve been able to sample were Tauer’s L’eau and Hermes Twilly and I loved both! I would be ecstatic to win Pink Wood, Suede de Suede, Ananda Tchai, Camel, Idyllwild, or DSH Foxy. I am in the U.S.

  • What a list again!
I really loved Idyllwild and Tauer’s L’eau and I’m not typically into the “fresher” scents but there was something nostalgic about them that I couldn’t pass up. January Scent Project and John Biebel is an absolute talent and I bought his trio set not too long ago, completely falling in love with Selperniku… buttery, salty, apricot milk galore! That being said there is still so much on the list I need to try such as the offerings from M. Micallef, April Aromatics and Zoologist’s Camel.

Amazing giveaway! Please enter me for the Worldwide prizes:
    April Aromatics – Pink Wood
    M. Micallef – Ananda Tchai
Mona Di Orio – Suede de Suede
    Zoologist – Camel

I’m from Sydney, Australia and thank you all so much!

  • james weaver says:

I haven’t gotten my nose on any of these fragrances yet. Thank you to Ida and Robert for their 2017 Best Fragrances and the intriguing read
I would enjoy winning the following
Maison Mona Di Orio Suède de Suède
30 ml of January Scent Project Eiderantler
5 ml of Solstice Scent Guardian
    Amouage Figment Man
    Ineke Idyllwild
    USA resident

  • Ida and Robert make everything sound wonderful. How I would love Amanda Tchai Laurie Erickson Bees bliss, Amouage figment man and the Idyllwild
    I am in the US

  • Thanks for the contest chance. I’m a huge fan of Amouage but sadly I have not tried Figment Man or Woman yet. I’m usually behind on smelling new releases but would love to add Figment to my collection of Amouage.

I’m in the US and would like to win Figment Man.

    Thanks!

  • I love these lists!! Much more enjoyable than the usual lists of all the people who passed during the year. Unfortunately I have only smelled 4 from this best list. I would love to win Suede de Suede, Ineke Idyllwild or Camel. Thanks for the chance! I live in the US.

  • Good to see such diversity in the choices of 2017 best fragrances. My favs are the Amouage Figment Man, Mona di Orio Suede de Suede, Mugler Aura and April Aromatics Pink Wood. I live in the US. Thanks!

  • OnWingsofSaffron says:

So many excellent US fragrances, it seems; none of them available in shops in Europe unfortunately!
Also, many fragrance blogs refer to them, So enticing—I‘d love to discover them.

  • I loved Ida’s Top Ten. I myself am a huge fan of Aftelier and DSH perfumes but have not triede neither of the mentioned. Most excitement brings for me the Jardin Nocturne by Shalini which I haven’t smelled yet but love it anyway. I have the first Shalini and it is such a unique and beautiful fragrance that I can trust blindly that Jardin Nocturne will be nothing less exciting!
I would like to enter the draw for:
    Jardin Nocturne and Pink Wood!

Thank you so much for the opportunity!

  • Beautiful list from Ida and Robert. I love natural perfumes so my choice is Pink wood. I also love that bottle of Ananda Thchi. Really interested in trying Camel too! USA

  • I haven’t tried any mentioned above. Would like to try M. Micallef Ananda Tchai or Suede de Suede by M. Micaleff.
Thank you! I live in Europe

  • Another heavy hitter list.. Ananda Tchai a beauty, Pinkwood on everyones list, Cafe Tuberosa is on my shelf. I had a sample of Maison Mona Di Orio Suède de Suède and would love a bottle.. A return trip to the land of my first love. I am in the US

  • These are great lists! I have added Ananda Tchai, Pink Wood and Suède de Suède to my list of what I would like to sniff.
Thank you for the generosity! USA

  • Another interesting list that’s prompting me to look up a whole lot of new perfumes I want to try. Thanks for the inspiration.
I’d like to win any of the following, please:
    April Aromatics: Pink Wood
    Solstice Scent: Guardian
    Shalini Jardin NOcturne.

THanks very much for the draw, and happy new year all.

  • Oh my, be still my heart. Great lists and so much to look forward to. It’s almost impossible to narrow it down, but if i’d have to choose, I would go for Mona Di Orio Suède de Suède, Zoologist Camel and Micallef Ananda Tchai. thank you for the draw! I live in Europe.

  • I love these lists! I always make a list of scents to sample/purchase and am rarely disappointed.
I agree with Ineke Idyllwild! Love it. Have had it four? months and am halfway through the bottle. YES is is that good!
Thank you for these draws and for all the hard work everyone puts into these lists and the day-to-day reviews. I would never know of most of these scents, and not have purchased at least 75% of the perfumes I have, without the reviews here. I cannot wait for Aura to be released in the US – that is one I will blind buy.
    I’m in the US.

My list in no particular order would be:
On second thought I removed Idyllwild – I love it and would love to have a backup bottle but it is better to share with someone else for them to experience.
    Remaining choices –
    April Aromatics Pink Wood
    M. Micallef 100 ml of Ananda Tchai
Maison Mona Di Orio Suède de Suède
    SHALINI Jardin Nocturne
    Sonoma Scent Bee’s Bliss
    Amouage Figment Man

  • I agree with all their choices, the ones I have smelled! Totally also love Cafe Tuberosa from atelier! I was impressed by Kisses Rain by Renier Perfumes, Narciso Rodriguez Santal Musc and the infamous pink bottle Jo Malone Green Almond and recurrent! I would die to try that Micallef Ananda Tchai!!!! That Bottle too OMG! thanks for this chance – I live in Maryland USA.

  • So many great descriptions. Thank-you for taking the time to compile this list and for the chance to win. My husband is very into smelling & collecting fragrances. Figment Man.

  • Love reading all the descriptions! The only ones I’ve had the opportunity to try are Idyllwild (which I loved) and Eiderantler, which was so interesting and beautiful. Thanks for all these wonderful end-of-year draws! I live in the US and would love to try any of the following:

    Pink Wood
    Figment Man
    Jardin Nocturne
although I’d ESPECIALLY LOVE to win Ineke Idyllwild or Ananda Tchai

  • So many goooddd! scents this year. I’ve had the opportunity to sample Mugler’s Aura….loved the scent but don’t find it wearable. Dying to try Camel as I love all Zoologist perfumes that I have tried. I place a lot of stead in the opinions of all your contributors and can’t wait to get out and get sniffing! I am in the US and would love to win Shalini Jardin Nocturne, M. Micallef Ananda Tchaikovsky, Zoologist Camel Amouge
Figment Man or Suede de Suede. Thank you for the chance. Happy New Year, all!

  • It’s great to see such a mix of naturals, indies, etc! Old loves like DSH, relatively new ones like Zoologist…It’s all good!
Except I am kind of not into most tuberose. But am glad other folks enjoy.

    Happy New Year!

    USA
Thank you guys so much for all the reviews and draws!
    Top choices:
    Camel
    Ananda Tchai
    Bee’s Bliss

    Pink Wood
    Suede de Suede
    Jardin Nocturne
    Figment Man

    Guardian
    Foxy

  • I haven’t smelled any of the fragrances you have on this list but each sound gorgeous.
I live in the US and my choices would be:

    April Aromatics Pink Woods
    Suede de Suede – MdO
    Zoologist Camel
    Ineke Idyllwild

  • I am liking this list as well. Great selections. Some I would really like to try are Ananda Tchai, Eiderantler, idyllwild, bees bliss, Jardin Nocturn
Thanks and happy new year. From California

  • Very nice to see Tom Ford’s Noir Anthracite on Ida’s list. It is on my DEFINITELY to-buy list for 2018. Of the others mentioned, I’m most interested in sampling:

    Bees Bliss
    Camel
    Figment Man

  • I am happy to see many Artisan perfumes among Ida’s and Robert’s best perfumes of 2017. Never mind, I have not tried most of these perfumes, but I believe Ida and Robert. They both are my favorite bloggers, and I enjoy their articles. It is amazing to see Pink Wood among Ida’s choices and Camel in Robert’s selection. I recognize five Zoologist perfumes, and they are all beautiful, so I presume the same beauty of Camel, too. I would also love to try Eiderantler, Velvet Tuberose and Foxy. I’d love to win Suède de Suède or Eiderantler or Foxy or Ananda Tchai or Jardin Nocturne or Camel or Guardian or Pink Wood. I’m in the EU, Croatia. Thank you.

  • Hi first thank you for amazing giveaway cafleurebon ! Some amazinging picks by everyone really solid choices, out of the bunch Noir anthracite is pretty fantastic it grew on me,my better half loved Ananda Tchai by m.micallef.

Out of these fantastic fragrances I’d love to win in order:
    ——————————————————————-
100 ml of Ananda Tchai M. Micallef
75 ml of Maison Mona Di Orio Suède de Suède
30 ml of January Scent Project Eiderantler
    30ml April Aromatics Pink Wood

11ml travel spray of Zoologist Camel
DSH Perfumes Il Marinaio Da Capri 10 ml roller
5 ml of Solstice Scent Guardian

Im in canada, again thanks for generous giveaway

  • Interesting list of fragrances. I keep hearing good things about Ineke Idyllwild and Zoologist Camel, I may have to buy samples before the new year comes. It's interesting what one reviewer may enjoy (in the case with Robert Herrmaan) another person may find unlikable (in the case with Michelyn…at least with the bottle) in regards to Hermes Twilly. Out of the fragrances, I am most interested in the following 1) Amouage's Figment Man 2) Sonoma Scent Bee's Bliss 3) Ineke Idyllwild 4)Zoologist Camel 5) Shamlimi Jardin Nocturne 6) Maison Mona di Orio Suede de Suede Thanks, and Happy New Year everybody!

  • I adore Ida’s writing so much I think I’d trust anything she recommended to me! (Which is good, because I have experienced none of the favorites on any of this year’s lists!) I WAS happy to see that the noses behind these fragrances are some of those whom I most admire. I live in the USA and, based upon reviews, I’d be honored to win, in this order:
    Micallef’s Ananda Tchai
    Amouage Figment Man
    April Aromatics Pink Wood
Mona di Orio Suede de Suede
    Shalini Jardin Nocturne
    Sonoma Scent Bee’s Bliss
    Ineke Idyllwild
    Zoologist Camel
    January Scent Eiderantler
    DSH Foxy

  • I’ve only gotten into perfume recently and I’m already hooked on both scents and scope of metaphors you all bring when describing scent! My favorite reviews –

    1) April Aromatics – Pink Wood
The imagery of women intensely clutching flowers (or in Persephone’scase, a pomegranate) perfectly illustrates the rapturous effect this scent must have had on Ida. Honeyed, spicy, resinous roses… this would make anyone swoon.

    2) M. Micallef – Ananda Tchai
Where I’m from (native Midwesterner), tea is something familiar and comforting; I’ve forgotten how it is also a sumptuous, ritualized substance. Real chai includes a swirling whirlwind of spices like cardamom and ginger, and the perfumer’s addition of cedar and musk makes this sound both spiritual and modern.

    3) Sonoma Scent Studio – Bee Bliss
The scent itself sounds just delightful, a nicely anchored sweet amber. I LOOOOOVE that you used a still photo from Picnic at Hanging Rock lol

I would love to win any of these in any order 🙂 I am in the US

About Cafe Tuberosa – I very much wanted to like this scent and the first whiff out of the bottle is great but it went sideways on my skin. So I enjoy Robert including it but I have seen some negative reviews and I wonder if it just doesn’t work with a lot of body chemistry?

  • Amy Maloney says:

I loved Ida’s reference to Velvet Tuberose saying she looks forward to every “anointment”! But what, I wonder, is Mitti? Also found the description of Suede de Suede interesting because of cloudberry – an “amber berry”. That could be very nice indeed. My husband asked what I thought of Tom Ford’s Noir Anthracite and I scoffed because I thought it was an overpriced flaker (without even giving it a chance.) I’d like to try it now! I wanted to love Cafe Tuberosa but the coffee note was a wee bit strong. What a great draw, thank you. I live in the US. I’d choose the Ananda Tchai (oh my!), Camel by Zooligist, or Jardins Noctune by Shalini.

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Again amazing picks by master writers of CafleureBon. I have full 100ml bottle of January Scent Project Eiderantler & would love to have a backup, hehehe.
    My choices if I win:
    1) January Scent Project Eiderantler
    2) SHALINI Jardin Nocturne
    3) April Aromatics Pink Wood
    4) Maison Mona Di Orio Suede de Suede
    5) DSH Perfumes Foxy
    6) Solstice Scent Guardian
    7) Zoologist Camel
    8) M. Micallef Ananda Tchai
    Thanks for the draw. Pakistan

  • My favorite scent of 2017 was Panda-2107 by Zoologist, but I just received a sample of Camel and it seems a sample will not be enough, so I would like to take this chance to win a travel spray!!! Now I am really interested to know other creations by Christian Carbonnel – the nose behind Camel and Panda, I love his approach to composition…

So my only choice from the list is:
    CAMEL ZOOLOGIST

Thank you, I live in the EU!
    HAPPY 2018!

  • doveskylark says:

Reading these lists on January 1st makes me feel so much excitement for exploring more fragrances in 2017. Of course, it can be daunting to explore, but there is just so much beauty…that takes away the overwhelmed feeling. I’m excited to try Foxy by DSH and Elderantler from January Scent Project. I love independent houses and hope to learn about more of them in 2018.
    If i were a winner, I’d choose:
    Elderantler
    Suede de Suede
    Pink Wood
    Ananda Chai
    Figment Man

    i live in the USA.

  • All great lists, thank you! I would love to try Ananda Tchai – the bottle is gorgeous and I love floral tea and spice combo or Suede de Suede because of the poetic description.

Happy New Year! i live in Europe

  • heartandsoul says:

Good variation of choices. I’ve tried a few of these but have sniffed offerings from most of the houses. Solstice Scents has impressed with every order I’ve placed. January Scent Project and Zoologist deliver when it comes to unique scents. Mr. Mugler and I do not get along, so my expectation of Aura is low. Maybe it will be a pleasant surprise.

US based and please enter me in the drawing. I am eyeing Bee’s Bliss, Eiderantler, and specifically Ananda Tchai. Jardin Nocturne intrigues me, too, because of the sandalwood. Guessing it’s knock-your-socks off quality? Thank you for a chance!

  • I only just became interested in perfumes this year, and have been smelling everything that I can get my hands on, trying to work out what works best for me. I love the reviews here, they’re so evocative (though you guys manage to make *everything* seem *irresistible*!)

I love all the natural perfumes that were included in the “favorites” list, and was especially happy to see Aftelier get a shout-out, though I haven’t tried Velvet Tuberose yet. I’ve done some sampling from them, and really enjoy their fragrances a lot (I’m wearing Wild Roses right now!)

And – I was happily surprised to see Idyllwild on the list, and on the giveaway list! That’s one that I’ve been hoping to try, but haven’t had a chance yet!

Twilly surprised me too. I scored a sample earlier this year and expected to love it (I like ginger!) but it didn’t quite work out on my skin. I need to give it another try, to be sure, but something didn’t quite work for me, which made me sad.

I’m in the US, and if I won, I’d love to try:
    – Idyllwild (I’ve been eyeing this one!)
    – Jardin Nocturne (ooh, sounds gorgeous)
    – Marinaio da Capri (sounds refreshing, and I’m a fan of DSH!)
    – Eiderantler
    – Camel
    – Pink Wood

    Thanks, and Happy New Year!
