AZMAN Perfumes I am Darkness review

I AM DARKNESS

I am a creature of passion A messenger of liberty
I am the oldest friend And the latest flame

I am timeless
A tradition of renewal An eternal spring
I am forever and ever

I am a cathedral
A spaceship
I travel through orbits And minds

I am an angel
I am known to all I am allegiance
I am darkness – author is a dear friend of Husen Baba’s  Raef©

Think of darkness, not as the bringer of bad dreams and echoing footsteps, nor as the things that go bump in the night, nor the shadows that creep and reach across the walls and floors when you’re alone. This darkness is warm as swaddling, the sooty blackness of embers in the grate flickering out as they leave their warmth behind; the cobalt blue edge to the horizon as night falls; the velvety drift to much-needed sleep; the gentle voice that murmurs in the lightless recesses of the holy places where gods and men converse in silence, “I Am Darkness.”

Husen Khan of AZMAN perfumes

Husen Baba

Not since Andre Lebreton’s brilliant Grimoire has there been a green incense that caught me quite like I Am Darkness. Dubai-based AZMAN Perfumes has created a beautiful incense fragrance built, unconventionally, on a chypre structure. The result is a mysterious, smoky green scent with a warm, floral heart and woody base that still somehow seems airy and warm. While the name I Am Darkness may suggest somberness, Brand founder Husen Baba explains that it relates to the mysterious, spiritual aspect of incense rather than of something foreboding: “Incense is closely associated to templates of different religions of the East and West. So, it’s a symbol of feeling inner safety and happiness. The name … gives a hint to its intensity.”

Perfumer Nutt Wesshasartat

Thai perfumer Nutt Wesshasartat

Thai perfumer Nutt Wesshasartat, who had been on Baba’s radar for some time, was chosen for I Am Darkness because of his facility with white florals, including a key element of AZAMAN Perfumes I Am Darkness, frangipani flower, which is native to Thailand. Frangipani’s presence in the perfume, though subtle, is to act as a bridge between the bright fruit notes of the opening, the sandy incense heart, and the heavier, woody and resinous notes of the base by providing a trilling floralcy that keeps the fragrance aloft.

In its earliest moments, I Am Darkness recalls Grimoire’s fumy verdancy, but then jaunts off in a fruity-floral direction. The fragrance opens with a gorgeous bouquet of bergamot, pink grapefruit, pepper and jasmine, all twined together with incense. Looking at the notes, I expected a punch of tartness and the sometimes-awkward clang of citrus and frankincense I have found in other fragrances, and a pungent pepper bang. But here, Wesshasartat has tamed the acidity of the fruit and left its brightness and floralcy intact, which gives I Am Darkness sparkle without piquancy. The pepper bouncing around in the top settles down quickly and adds heat rather than punch, lighting a cozy fire underneath the incense and providing a warm entrée for the woody, resinous notes to come.

The chypre backbone to I Am Darkness is most evident in the way the citrus notes, led by bergamot, tease out the oakmoss and give the fragrance an overall sensation of dry greenness, a quality I have found in many old-school chypres, and which I love. Weaving in and out of the chypre architecture a light oud and frankincense ribbon, smelling creamy and woody, almost like grated sandalwood. As it settles on the skin for the next few hours, I Am Darkness is so many things that shouldn’t work together but do: the creaminess of the frangipani and jasmine washing over the light oud, tart fruit and smoky incense clinching like two teens who hated each other all throughout first term and are now snogging in the janitor’s closet, and chypre directing it all with the deftness of a maestro. It’s wonderful.

I am darkness by AZMAN

AZMAN Perfumes I am Darkness

Last year’s Two Minutes After The Kiss, a rose-oud fragrance, showed just how splendid this classic combination can be when made with real Cambodian oud and high-quality rose absolutes instead of relying on synthetics. I Am Darkness proves that AZMAN Perfumes can do the same justice to frankincense and oud, while giving it a twist that is at once inventive and cohesive. Folks, keep your eyes on this brand. It’s bloody good. (ed note: AZMAN Perfumes Manjoon was recently reviewed by Nicoleta Tomsa.)

Notes: Fir, bergamot, black pepper, grapefruit, Cambodian oud, cananga (ylang-ylang), jasmine, coffee, frangipani – white champaca, amyris, frankincense, labdanum, oakmoss.

Disclaimer: Sample of AZMAN Perfumes I Am Darkness kindly provided by AZMAN Perfumes. My opinions, as always, are my own.

  • I had the pleasure of testing this recently, and I do believe Lauryn managed to transpose the spirit of this scent aptly into words. A beautiful take on incense !
Thabms for the draw. Based in Romania

  • Loved the fragrance since I read the name. I think we all have darkness in ourselves. I tend to associate darkness to a warm, airy place. The notes surely make this fragrance mega appealing to me: “mysterious, smoky green scent with a warm, floral heart and woody base” I hope I can win this because this would suit perfect for my personality.

  • I am not familiar with Azman perfumes but am interested in this brand because of Lauryn’s recommendation. I am not familiar with frangipani note but love incense perfumes as to me they have a deep, earthy, soothing quality. Husen Baba’s quote refers to the spiritual nature of I am Darkness perfume -“Incense is closely associated to templates of different religions of the East and West. So, it’s a symbol of feeling inner safety and happiness. The name … gives a hint to its intensity.” I checked their website to see if any samples are available, but couldn’t find any – wish they did as it seems to be a great brand, and I am Darkness seems to be a perfume I will love, but would prefer to try a sample first as their perfumes are expensive. Cambodian oud, frankincense, coffee, jasmine, ylang ylang, labdanum – these are all notes I love and I am Darkness promises to be a heady, earthy, calming perfume which I would love to try. Thanks for the review Lauryn, and thanks as always for such a generous draw. I am in the USA.

  • Hello! What appeals to me about AZMAN Perfumes I Am Darkness based on Lauryn’s review specifically is how this is a Dubai based house which doesn’t rely on synthetics. I am a big fan of the style of Arabian fragrances and hearing this use many naturals is very interesting to me and I hope I am able to win a bottle. I live in Chandler Arizona!

  • Azman is being really generous as this is the second giveaway in a week. Thanks! I don’t think I’ve smelled a smoky green scent before, frangipani either. Very interesting. U.S.A.

  • As chypres and incense fragrances are my favorite and Grimoire is at the very top of my buy list, this review has certainly gotten my attention. I’m also curious about frangipani as I love tropical floras but haven’t familiarized myself with this one. I’m excited about this brand. In US

The fir and coffee notes have my mind wondering what this smells like, thanks for another review that takes me to another place and time, as always fantastically written.

  • “Two teens snogging in the janitor’s closet”…That’s all I need to hear! Count me in! I am in the US.

  • This sounds gorgeous, Lauryn. I would love to smell how those notes work together but have no doubt they do. I’m always happy to see natural materials, too. Azman has samples available on their site, so I will have to order one of each maybe. Thanks, as always. NC USA

Thank you for the review. This one sounds really interesting. Based on the review it sounds like a fragrance that has so many different facettes that somehow still work together. Im very interested in sampling it. I will keep an eye out for it.
Thank you also for the chance to win a bottler.

  • From the previous AZMAN review, a few days ago I remember Husen Khan lived in different parts of the world, and its multicultural background gave him a different perspective towards fragrances, and life. It’s shown in his idea of AZMAN , and “I am Darkness” .
Just like the owner, the fragrance is multicultural, it combines a chypre, incense, woody and fruity parts , with quality rose and natural oud in one sophisticated scent .
    Exciting giveaway, USA

  • Such an enrapturing review, Lauryn! I am always searching for a new and better incense fragrance and this sounds right up my alley. I love that this Dubai based brand is using perfumers from around the world. I can’t wait to try these scents! Thanks for the draw. US

  • Lauryn!!! ❤️❤️ I always enjoy your reviews so much! Thank you for calling attention to this interesting fragrance! I’m very interested in this “incense fragrance built on a chypre structure.” ❤️ The notes I crave at this time (the last few weeks of deep winter before spring begins to lift the cold) are white florals like “cananga (ylang-ylang), jasmine, coffee, frangipani – white champaca” (coffee can be so lovely in a fragrance). I’m even more interested in this house after your brilliant review! Can’t wait to experience I Am Darkness! Thank you for this wonderful opportunity and good luck to all! USA

  • What a lovely review! I love the description of the frangapani note in this perfume, that acts as a bridge, and the description of the fruit notes and incense heart. It sounds like such a complex and interesting perfume. I live in California, USA.

When I need to connect to the wonderful I seek out either perfume or the stars. ‘The cobalt blue edge to the horizon’ in the review immediately took me to a starry sky, something which I find both peaceful and awe-inspiring. Thank you for the draw. I live in the UK.

  • HIKMAT SHER AFRIDI says:

Thanks for the review!!!! Yes, indeed another great perfume house.
Last week I bought the three perfumes of Azman 1) I am Darkness 2) Two Minutes After The Kiss and 3) Majnoon. All the three sound great and love it, of which the most impressive is Majnoon to my nose.
    Love from Pakistan

  • I skipped this one at first but then decided to give it go. Sometimes I crave for dark scents, but more often than not they have something frightening in them… Based on this review I imagine the scent to be soothing and comforting, enveloping you in your dark cocoon where you mature and break out as a black velvety butterfy rather than cabbage white. I loved the notes and though the combination is rather unexpected but makes perfect sense to me. Would love to try this one!

  • Incredible review Lauryn! Loved reading it and another one from the house I definitely must try, alongside Majnoon! This sounds even better, and the combination of cambodian oud, amyris, frankincense, labdanum, oakmoss sound absolutely breathtaking – oh, an the bottle is ultrachic, I must say! This is a winner, without a doubt! I live in Croatia, EU

A beautiful description by Lauryn I am intrigued by the notes especially Frankincense and Oud. A house that I need to explore further. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

A wonderful piece by Lauryn really fascinated by the frangipani note. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • Yes, this brand is undoubtedly fascinating, distinguishable among others with taste (beautiful and stylish essential bottles) and uniqueness (outside the usual schemes).
It is not easy to find a sample of the three fragrances, but it is worth it.
    Thank you

  • Ooh, another Azman Perfumes review! I enjoyed Nicoleta’s review of Manjoon. This one- I’m Darkness – seems to gave interesting notes: fir, oud, coffee, resins and flowers on a chypre backbone sounds like a wonderful perfume.

  • This does it for me:

  • Thanks for the review and for introducing this house. I am really curious about this house now. Thank you for the draw and good luck to everyone! I am in the USA.

  • Thanks for this wonderful review Lauryn!

Nicoleta’s review of Majnoon, here on CaFleureBon, brought AZMAN to my attention. I absolutely love the minimalistic bottle and graphic design and am intriqued by the reviews of their high quality releases!

I was thrilled to read I Am Darkness has a Chypre backbone. As I am getting older I have been gradually leaning to the less sweet fragrances and to the more Green, Aromatic and Chypre styles.

Your comparison of the notes with two teens snogging in the janitor’s closet had me in stitches hahaha! I’m genuinely curious about the smell now!

    Greetings from the UK!

  • A green chypre and incense! After reading Lauryn’s descriptions of I am Darkness, I have decided I need to try every one of Azman’s fragrances. They all sound so different and composed by these amazing perfumers. Lauryn, I loved the poem too! Thank you for the chance to try this, USA

  • There are so many things to at intrigued me about Lauryn’s review of Azman Perfumes’ “I Am Darkness”. First and foremost; the bottle. Simple, sleek, sexy. I appreciate designs that aren’t too gaudy and showcase the precious juice within. From the sound of this one, how precious indeed. When Lauryn wrote “… the creaminess of the frangipani and jasmine washing over the light oud, tart fruit and smoky incense clinching like two teens who hated each other all throughout first term and are now snogging in the janitor’s closet, and chypre directing it all with the deftness of a maestro”, I thought, ‘wow…wonderful indeed’. Many of my favorite things wrapped up into one. Incense, chypre, greenness. This one sounds incredibly special and would be a welcome addition into anyone’s collections. Thanks, as always, for the opportunity and cheers from Illinois!

  • Incense is one of my favorite ingredients in general. The combination with – as Lauryn states – a chore backbone sounds refreshing and quite unusual to me. Which is intriguing. Therefor I would love to win the bottle 🙂

  • Just can’t wait to try “I am darkness”. As it has something similar to Grimoire that is mentioned several times in the text and Grimoire is in me to try list for a long time now. Also perfume created by thai perfumer sounds super intriguing. I live in Paris, France

  • This fragrance sounds unconventional and unique. It seems like an interesting combination of notes and characteristics. I would love to experience Azman perfumes offerings because this brand sounds so unique and forward thinking.
    Greetings from Maryland, US.

  • The overall note combination draws my interest. This sounds so different than the incense fragrances I own. I haven’t had my nose on any of the fragrances from this house. Perhaps that will change soon.

  • The note of incense always has my attention. I like that it has a dry greenness and frangipani. Thanks for introducing a new brand to me and the opportunity to sniff I Am Darkness. Love the name. Mich USA

  • Looks like Baba is fan of Thai perfumery since he has also collaborated with Prin. I am Darkness feels like fruity, smoky incense creation. Thailand has, indeed, rich incense culture so it makes sense to go for a perfumer from the country. I am in US.

  • ThatMulattoDude says:

Really enjoyed the poem and how Ms. Lauryn described this fragrance. The double dose of incense is what really draws me in as well as the coffee note. This style of fragrance is off the beaten path from what I usually wear. I’m really interested in this offering. Appreciate the generosity of the giveaway. Many blessings from Virginia, USA!

  • I love the idea of a incense chypre with some fresh and juicy notes! This sounds beautiful. I’m in USA.

  • Lauryn’s excitements about I am Darkness is very visible in her review. I must say that the notes and her description are very very intriguing. I’m always on the lookout for a new interesting and different incense fragrance and this one might be it. I have never ever herd of frangipani in combination with incense and oud! These notes are also not something I would expect in a chypre style fragrance so that adds an extra dimension to my interest. Wow I have to try this one, but also other Azman fragrances. This sounds amazing. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • When told to keep an eye on a house because it is bloody good, I figure I better look into them! Plus incense, what more could I want? In maryland.

  • I’ve always thought of frangipani as being a tropical fragrance. Its inclusion in a frankincense and oud based chypre is fascinating. A lot of Nutt’s choices are interesting; for, black pepper, grapefruit. I would love to sniff this one. It sounds like quite a ride. MD, USA.

  • Great review and I love the sound of green incense. I am a big fan of chypres so with the added incense this sounds like a real winner. I love also frangipani as well so hopeful to win this one. Thanks for the draw in VA, USA.

  • Another unforgettable AZMAN review i have to say , in just a few days.
I’m Darkness feels trailblazing, one you’d never forget type of fragrance. I like how sophisticated it is , but also cold , at least I think of non sweat incense fragrance of being cold.
The mixture of citruses, incense, and flowers is what makes I’m Darkness different
    Thanks for the draw

  • I really like how different and unique I Am Darkness sounds. Also how the name is interpreted more as a soothing calm darkness than a stark or foreboding darkness. The florals sound really nice mingling with the citrus and the darker notes. Also seeing coffee listed I’m curious as to how that shows up in the composition. The transition from the more citrus opening to the resinous base with incense throughout sounds very interesting. The recent review on Manjoon as well as this one really have me curious about the brand. Thanks for the generous draw, from CT USA.

  • This review effectively conveyed the inherent juxtaposition of the contrasting elements within this perfume. This description makes for a unique sounding experience that intrigues and appeals to me. I would love to be entered into the giveaway. IL, USA. Thank you!

  • I simply adore oud, even the more “animalic” aspects of it. This fragrance in particular seems like a perfect balance between beeing oudy and sweet, while maintaining some incensy oriental quality. Thank you for the opportunity! I live in Romania, EU.

  • What draws me to it is the mysterious green notes combined with the smoky feel and a floral heart. That combination just sounds like made in heaven. Living in EU, Romania.

  • The perfumes with the key ingredient of the incense fragrance have a direct effect that calms my mind, in the (always) wonderful description I AM DARKNESS is a sophisticated and original fragrance, I have perfumes with this ingredient, a symbol of well-being, but this brand has a mysterious power over me. I would very much like to be carried away by its magnetic trail

  • What draws me to it are the mysterious green notes, their smoky feel and the floral heart. For me this sounds like a combination made in heaven. I am living in EU, Romania.

  • I’m still looking for the perfect incense perfume… This caught my attention right away. And the way it is described!!!! Sounds amazing!!!! MA, US

  • Haven’t got into incense based fragrances. Azman parfums have my interest and I’d like to try their offerings. I am Darkness sounds mysterious and warm. Thanks

  • Danny Constantinescu says:

You had me at incense and florals built on a chypre structure, specifically frangipani, which I find it’s such a mysterious flower. Smoky green and white florals? Just brilliant. I live in London, UK.

  • I was sold at the point where Lauryn mentioned “Grimoire”. I also think that is an excellent, original take in incense and the comparison makes me want to try “I am Darkness”. I also really enjoy a good Chypre and therefore I like how Lauryn picks up on the green chypre backbone in this fragrance which may be surprising with oudh as an unlikely partner. All in all this sounds original, creative and mysterious. Will look out for this and the brand! Marit UK

  • Another review of an AZMAN perfume with a unique interpretation of the oud note. This time packaged in a green incense chypre package. And with Thai florals as well! It sounds enchanting. I’m happy to see another upcoming Thai perfumer. Their perfumery palate is beautiful especially with their use of exotic and narcotic florals. The frangipani combined with the oud has to be a great experience.
    I live in Denmark, EU.

  • What a fascinating description! I don’t want to enter the drawing, but I just wanted to say thanks to AZMAN for their generosity.

  • I’ve been on an incense kick lately, so I’m trying as many takes on the genre as I can. Lauryn pointed out this one’s intriguing interplay between tart fruity notes and smoky frankincense and oud, which sounds wonderful and complex. I also love a strategically used black pepper note—I hope that’s strong here. Thanks for the detailed review!

    I’m in the Midwest, USA.

  • Thanks for the opportunity for the chance at the drawing. What interests me is that this is a Arabic brand and so many other UAE based brands make long lasting powerhouses. Also, oud, coffee, incense and tropical sweet frangipani!? Not usually seen that often, but I was introduced to this delightful flower working at Molton Brown when they released their delicious Templetree line. Brings back some lovely memories. A nice collection of some of my favorite things! This sounds a yin yang composition with the play on the dark and light. Truly intriguing! USA

  • A sparkling smoky incense, both fruity-warm floral and creamy woody like a smooth velvety embrace,my finger crossed for AZMAN I Am Darkness! From Romania with love!

  • I feel I have to try this! Chypre! Incense! Although I admit my favourite part of the review was when you described the oud, fruit, and incense as teens in a closet XD writing from the EU.

  • The sentiment that completely sold it to me was the description of “a mysterious, smoky green scent with a warm, floral heart and woody base that still somehow seems airy and warm.” I mean, come on! This fragrance is right up my alley, and I am so interested to experience the chypre nature of this.
    USA based!

  • I Am Darkness — What an amazing name of a perfume! Who would not want to own a perfume with this name? I so love this name… And of course, I like the notes as well. And I very enjoyed to read the review. I would very like to win this fragrance. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • This sounds so unique! An incensey chypre, who would have thought? The fact it also features labdanum, frangipani and coffee also get me rather excited – three of my favorite notes at the same time! I kind of dig the name too. Essential, but powerful.
I’m in the EU, thanks for the draw!

  • What appeals to me most about this review is the description of the fragrance as darkness. Yes, yes, yes! I already know that I will fall in love with this fragrance if I get my nose on it. Even though it is getting warmer, there is always a time for the heavy, rich, warm fragrances. This one sounds gorgeous. Kind regards from IN, USA.

  • A true chypre! And “so many things that shouldn’t work together but do”— this sounds inspiring and inspired. AND a “green incense” fragrance… Sign me up.

  • Michael Prince says:

So many things appeal to me about AZMAN Perfumes I Am Darkness based on Lauryn’s review. First, I loved reading the poem in the beginning. I loved learning about Thai perfumer Nutt Wesshasartat and this beautifully created Chypre and Green Incense fragrance. This fragrance also incorporates white florals of Fangiapani, but the spicy, woody, and reisnous incense elements really appeal to me. I am from Ohio, USA.

  • Claumarchini says:

I am particularly fond of incense in perfumes and in general (I love my bakhoor and use if frequently to chase bad smells away in the house), therefore I am really super-intrigued by I am Darkness. I am not familiar with the house but from what I have read it seems a really innovative brand, that make you discover new facets that you had never thought of so it would be amazing to be the lucky winner! The use of frangipani and coffee together with frankincense and labdanum has really sparkled my interest and being also fond of green scents the definition of “green incense” is utterly evocative. By the way, frangipani is actually native of Central America!! Greetings from Italy

  • I laughed out loud when you described the cohesiveness of contradictory notes as “like two teens who hated each other all throughout first term and are now snogging in the janitor’s closet”. It is quite a collection of notes I would not normally imagine being blended together. I love that the oud and incense are not synthetic. This sounds like an incredible fragrance house.
    I live in the USA

  • First of all, I love the name I Am Darkness so mysterious and powerful. What’s interesting to me is that with this name, you would expect black glass bottle and super dark and heavy fragrance but according to Lauryn’s review there is also place for some green notes and floral heart and the scent still manage to be airy and cozy somehow. So that it’s something that appeals to me the most. I live in Poland, EU.

  • Lauryn’s review caused me to be interested in seeing how this fragrance house uses certain ingredients, e.g. frankincense and oud. I like this fragrance’s list of notes, and I’m interested to see what this company’s fragrance releases are like. I live in the U.S.A. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  • Lauryn Beer take on AZMAN I am Darkness, in my Pastry Chef mind reminded me of of a ever slightly burnt Matcha Green Tea Mousse .
I’ll look for samples, I have a good feeling about AZMAN fragrances
Appreciate the review , and the giveaway campaign

  • Thank you for the beautiful writeup Lauryn.

This sounds like such a magical fragrance – a beautiful weave of an old perfumery style, modern perfumery and the beautiful tradition of oud

I would love to get my nose on this house!

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I love the complexity of AZMAN I am Darkness, it’s woody, spicy, smoky and green. It shows how a classy incense fragrance should smell.
Thank you Lauryn Beer , and AZMAN

  • I could be wrong, but i have a good feeling Nutt Wesshasartat , and Husen Baba tried to emulate to e certain degree Boswellia Sacra Royal Hojari Green Frankincense, its scent profile is quite similar to “I am Darkness” .
Royal Hojari grade Frankincense is wildly considered the best in the world, and it’s classed as ‘Medical Grade’ which means it is high enough grading for ingestion .It comes from boswellia sacra trees in Oman , harvested only under fair and favorable conditions. It’s qualities are legendary
People in Dubai and the region , except for burning are using for chewing, just put a grain of frankincense in your mouth, and savor it; in a few minutes it will become a natural chewing gum, or dip a grain of frankincense in a glass of water and let it sit overnight , you can enjoy the drink the next day.
“I am Darkness” is unique fragrance i’d absolutely love to win
    All profiles I already follow
    Thanks a lot

  • Finally I’m able to enter , I was trying for a few hours now. I hope because of the technical difficulties, and the website being down, you’ll count my comment .
I am Darkness I’ll enjoy a lot, by the notes and the feelings coming from the fragrance, I believe it would be a fragrance in the same family as the discontinued, and favorite of mine Vert d’Encens by Tom Ford . The resins, the incense, the conifers, the woods I can’t go wrong with.
    Thank you for the opportunity

  • Wonderful review Lauryn! What appeals to me about AZMAN Perfumes I Am Darkness based on Lauryn’s review is the idea of a smokey incense scent built around an unusual green chypre structure. The juxtaposition of these two very different types of fragrances really intrigues me. I adore incense fragrances, and I love green chypres, but I’ve never smelled a fragrance that is both at the same time. I am also really interested because it’s created by a Thai perfumer. Not only do I love supporting Asian businesses and perfumers, but also two of my favorite perfumers of all time are Thai – Prin Lomros and Pissara Umavijani. I am sure I will be delighted by Nutt Wesshasartat’s creation as well! I can’t wait to get my nose on this one! I live in the US.
