Ely siriar, el sila

Ai! Aniron Undomiel

Tiro! el eria e mor

I ‘lir en el luitha ‘uren.

Ai! Aniron…”

Aníron – Enya/ (Aníron means “I desire” in the constructed Elvish language of Sindarin)

To be honest, 9 times out of 10, the first association that comes to my mind, when smelling a perfume, is connected to clans, races, and characters from games. Of course, the niche within the niche of people that would find any speck of joy in reading about this sort of thing is SO narrow, that I would just end up talking to myself . So, I have dubbed it ‘‘roleplaying” perfumery and sort of made it my trademark shtick, in “real life”, pestering my family, friends, and colleagues with an array of endless associations, stories, and jokes.

My first reaction to Santal Blond was “Ed i’ear ar’ elenea! (By the seas and stars! – in elvish) if this is not elf-in-a-bottle, I don’t know what is!” More of an Elder Scrolls high elf, mind you, than a World of Warcraft one (for that, Feminite du Bois from Serge Lutens will forever reign supreme). Let me compose myself before I switch my elven reference color wheel to a more palatable Tolkien lore, and tell you more about the brand first:

“Guided by the quest for a rigorously precise aesthetic, I want to offer a fragrance that is a reflection of who I am. Emotional and distinctive, my creations are imagined around raw materials and those who transform them.” sais the creator of the brand, Véronique Le Bihan

Each of the fragrances from Atelier Materi’s’s portfolio is focused on a single natural raw material, selected from the best terroir and with respect for fair trade. We have the six following fragrances, created by Marie Hugentobler: Cacao Porcelana, review here (an airy luxury gourmand focused on an intense cocoa experience ); Bois dámbrette, featured in the Make it Musk Box (a most nostalgic, gut-wrenchingly beautiful and nostalgic bucolic musk); Iris Ebène (a delicate hand, covered in a red suede glove, holding a powdery dry iris ); Poivre Pomelo (a feel-good, spicy fresh citrus that I will surely revisit when the weather gets warmer) and Narcisse Taiji (a new floral scent, launched this year that I didn’t have the chance to smell yet). They are all imponderable architectural constructions, minimalist but not simplistic with a commitment to “slow luxury” and a strong ethical backbone.  The one fragrance I will focus on today is created by Lucas Sieuzac, also responsible for well-loved perfumes such as Amouage Ciel for Woman, Jubilation 25, or Reflection.

“Elrond’s house was perfect, whether you liked food or sleep or story-telling or singing (or reading), or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all. Merely to be there was a cure for weariness. … Evil things did not come into the secret valley of Rivendell.”

Waking up in Rivendell, eyes half-cracked, the large windows wide open, spying on the slow movement of the curtains, that let in the crisp morning air, in cool wafts, filled with the promise of a cool blue sea. Slowly gaining control over your numb body, you stand up, stretching out your arms, and begin to unpeel the long white bandages from your battle-scarred body, releasing in the air the soothing smell of crushed herbs and bergamot oil, used to bring down your fever and heal your wounds. Near your bed, the worlds-famous cardamom cookies are waiting for you, near the warm glass of milk. Your taste buds water in anticipation as you sink your teeth into the soft cookie, filled with the minty lemony spicy treat, that will leave your breath smelling heavenly for hours.

Collage of libraries photos via Atlas Obscura and Atelier Materi by Nicoleta

After making yourself presentable, dressed up in your azure and gold silk robe, you descend the stairs to the library. Wandering for hours through the long corridors, pale labyrinth of shelves made out of carved softwoods, stretching like veins of an ancient forest, covering the walls as far as the eyes can see. You rummage through heaps of yellowed-out parchments, and countless leather-bound books until you finally find the one you look for.  Specks of golden dust float in the narrow ray of sunshine that comes down, from the star-shaped ceiling window above. You unfold the old scroll and see the golden symbols dance before your eyes, drawing the map to your next destination. Finally having your answer, you allow yourself a few more minutes of rare peace, there, on the library balcony, basking in the milky soft light of the dusk, rich and sweet wafts of jasmine coming out from the garden outside, mixing in with the blonde woods of the ancient library.

“There lie woods of Lothlórien! That is the fairest of all the dwellings of my people! (…)There are no trees like the trees of that land. For in the autumn their leaves fall not, but turn to gold. Not till the spring comes and the new green opens do they fall, and then the boughs are laden with yellow flowers, and the floor of the wood is golden and golden is the roof, and the pillars are of silver, for the bark of the trees is smooth and grey.”

It’s long past midnight in the forest of Lothlorien. Silver chalices that held the sweet Miruvor, lie abandoned, droplets of the nectar seeping into the ground. The smoke of the ceremonial fires slowly curls up, fading into the silence of the night. Time stands still in the hours before dawn, calibrating the compass of the immortal soul, always pointing towards the true north.

Santal Blond by Atelier Materi review

Atelier Materi Santal Blond photo by Nicoleta

Santal Blond is a scented Mithril armor that is fit for everyday wear, comfortable even if you wear it under your corporate suit, softly cheering you on while you swing away at your Excel dragons. Perfectly unisex, with a soft presence but excellent longevity, with depth but playing within the same realm from beginning to end, Santal Blond is, for me, a textbook definition of a roleplaying scent.

Notes:

Top: Waking up in Rivendell: bright, healing, reinvigorating (Bergamot, Cardamom)

Heart: A library near the sea: luminous, relaxing, contemplative, soothing, milky (Jasmine, Sandalwood)

Base: Lothlorien ancient rites: warm, bacchic, sweet, velvety, smoky (Hinoki Bourbon, Tonka Bean)

  • I loved these evocative ideas from Nicoleta, the references to Lord of the Rings and the world of gaming. I especially enjoyed her structuring of this fragrance on three phases: Rivendell, a library and Lothlorien. Definitely gives it extra spirituality and makes me wanna own it as my own real-life Mithril.
    I live in EU.

  • Nicoleta did a fantastic review here. I just pictured Rivendell and all Tolkien world with this review and fragrance. I love this kind of mystic fragrance and sandal is one of my favorite notes. I would love to try this, meanwhile I read LoTR again. I am in U.S.

  • Atelier Matieri Santal Blond seems like an interesting sandalwood fragrance that may remind one of Tolkien characters. It is unisex and a comfortable everyday wear and has been composed by Lucas Sieuzac who has created many wonderful fragrances for Amouage including Jubilation 25. Thanks for the draw. I am in US.

  • Nicoleta’s review immediately sparked my interest with its title referencing Rivendell. I was entranced by all the specific, lovely details she wove throughout the review of both the Santal Blond and the connections to Lord of the Rings’ elves.

Her closing sentence comparing Santal Blond to a “scented Mithril armor” for fighting “Excel dragons” speaks to me as someone who fights Excel creatures on the regular and I would dearly love to win a bottle of such fine armor.

Thank you for the wonderful review and giveaway. I am in the US (Maryland).

  • I love RPGs and anything concerning them so much and this review delivered everything a fanboy of such scents would need. It left me wanting to get a fragrance mythril armor of my own! I am from Poland.

  • Nicoleta knows how to captivate her audience :). Thank you for another wonderful olfactive journey that includes the wonderful notes provided in Santal Blond. The perfumer, Lucas Sieuzac, has created some beautiful fragrances, of which, this sounds right in line with what I need to add to my collection 😉 I live in the US.

  • I so appreciate Nicoleta’s brief introduction to Atelier Matieri and already enjoy Bois dámbrette, so this one is appealing. I am always interested in hinoki in fragrances. NC USA

I am struck by the cardamom and sandalwood as well as the references to unisex warriors. What an engaging review Nicoleta has composed!!! I would visit Rivendell!!

  • Lord of the Rings is one of my favourite movie series and I absolutely love that universe and everything connected with it. I watched the movies numerous times and still can’t get enough of them.
Now, having a fragrance linked to them, I must say, that it’s a nice addition and a very welcomed one!
Please count me in for the draw! Europe

  • My kind of review! When I saw elves and Tolkien quotes I immediately liked this fragrance more than before. I have tried only Cacao Porcelana and I love it. Santal Blond was the next one on my to try list. After this review I really want to try it even more. I really like the note breakdown and parallels drawn with morning, day and evening in Rivendell. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • I’m a lotr fan so I definitely appreciated this unexpected intersection between that series and perfume. More fun associations to look forward to in the future as well I hope? This sounds like a beautiful and comforting scent, as a sandalwood lover i’d be thrilled to try it. -U.S.

I like the idea of a perfectly unisex fragrance that is fit for everyday wear. I like woody fragrances, and this one sounds like a winner. I live in Maryland USA.

  • I loved the image of meandering through an old library. What a fun review! I had the pleasure of sampling Santal Blond over the last few weeks and enjoyed it immensely. In fact, I added it to my wishlist this evening only to discover it was today’s featured fragrance! It would be a joy to own a bottle. I live in Indiana.

  • I love the association to Rivendell and Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, one of my favorite reads. Already on my wishlist, I’m drawn to Santal Blond because of its hinoki note. Thanks another fabulous article. Mich USA

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I love the evocative fantasy world conjured in this review! As a fantasy fan, I often feel that smell is missing from world building…and I appreciate its presence here! The notes are also faves of mine (woods, tonka, flowers, light spice). Thanks for the generous draw! I’m in the US (Colorado).

  • Very intriguing review Nicoleta! What sparks my interest based on Nicoleta’s review of Santal Blond is her description of the heart of the fragrance as a walk through the majestic library of Rivendell, wandering through long corrirdors, leaving through ancient texts of yellowed parchment and leather bindings, draped in gold and silk, sunlight dappling through the leafy canopy of stunning forests, and wafts of jasmine coming in through the garden outside. It is such an evocative and beautiful review that incorporates so many of my favorite things and notes as a fan of Lord of the Rings, roleplay, and libraries alike. I also absolutely LOVE the final note she ended the review on – that it’s scented armor perfect for “swing[ing] away at your Excel dragons”! I live in the US.

  • Nicoleta’s review of Santal Blond is beautiful! Who wouldn’t want to smell like a scent that evokes fairies? Bergamot is one of my favorite notes, and I have been searching for a warmer scent for winter with cardamom, incense, sandalwood notes. This scent by Atelier Matieri sounds as if it may be a perfect fit! Nicoleta provides a beautiful description of waking in elven lands and traversing a lovely seaside library. I can’t imagine a livelier fragrance! From US.

  • Santal Blond sounds splendid to me. I’ve been interested in Atelier Matiere since I first learned of the brand. A friend owns Iris Ebene which sounds great and I was just speaking about how much I want to try Bois D’Ambrette today! Santal Blond is another that piqued my interest. I loved reading this review with the lovely description of the scent and the story telling tied to the elves and their lands in Lord of The Rings. It made the fragrance sound beautiful almost otherworldly and id very much love to try it. Thanks for the generous draw, from CT USA.

  • Firstly, thanks to Nicoleta for this fantastically entertaining review. I have been wanting to try fragrances from Atelier Matieri for months and Santal Blond speaks to me more than the rest.
What intrigues me about this fragrance is the notes (sandalwood is my favorite note in fragrances).
Also, Nicoleta’s reference to Elder Scrolls high elves really peaked my interest because this brought the fragrance profile to life for me. I could see the feeling Santal Blond evokes and it makes me want to try it even more.
I am a huge LOTR fan and the pictures of Galadriel and Thranduil really just solidified that I absolutely need this because when I wear a fragrance, that is exactly how I want to feel. Like an ethereal other-worldly creature.
    Hello from Texas, USA!

  • Heard so much about this new Fragrance house. Atelier Matieri Santal is something I would love to own. Nicoleta’s review was interesting she had me at Lord of the Rings. Santal is lovely note. Thank you for this Chance. USA

  • Balint Ruxandra says:

If you close your eyes and somebodyelse is reading you the Nicoleta’s review i bet that you will feel the air of Rivendell. As Nicoleta write: “Near your bed, the worlds-famous cardamom cookies are waiting for you, near the warm glass of milk. Your taste buds water in anticipation as you sink your teeth into the soft cookie, filled with the minty lemony spicy treat, that will leave your breath smelling heavenly for hours.” This definitely spark my interest and i can wait to smell the elixir of Rivendell. Best wishes from Cluj-Napoca, Romania!

  • I loved reading the review, but this note pyramid really interested me:

Top: Waking up in Rivendell: bright, healing, reinvigorating (Bergamot, Cardamom)

Heart: A library near the sea: luminous, relaxing, contemplative, soothing, milky (Jasmine, Sandalwood)

Base: Lothlorien ancient rites: warm, bacchic, sweet, velvety, smoky (Hinoki Bourbon, Tonka Bean)

I am absolutely in love with everything related to lord of the rings, as well as sandalwood fragrances, so this just did it for me! I never smelled anything from the house, sadly, but this would be a great entry point, I’m sure!

    I live in Croatia, EU

  • Balint Ruxandra says:

If you close your eyes and somebodyelse is reading the Nicoleta’s review, i bet that you can be in Rivendell. I love the notes as described , i can wait to smell a part of LOTR, i want to be a part of it. What convinced me, or spark my interest is about ‘the famous cardamom cookies…near the warm glass of milk” and also “the soft cookie, filled with the minty lemony spicy treat, that will leave your breath smelling heavenly for hours”. Best wishes from Cluj_Napoca, Romania!!!

  • I like that Nicoleta always draws a vivid imaginary picture of what she associates with the fragrance, as always this story was lovely to read. I recently tried Cacao Porcelana and I think is one of the best chocolate fragrances out there, so now I am very intrigued to try this mysterious santal fragrance, I imagine it to be smooth and luxurious.
Thanks for the draw, and sparking our imagination, I am from EU

  • Fantastic review! The description sounds beautiful and full of mystique, so I would love to own a bottle. I live in Germany, EU

  • Oh my God, it’s my kind of story ! This review transports me right in that mood, i can almost feel it, to the point i crave this one so much to the verge of blind-buy if i’m not so lucky to win Santal Blond. It also recalls me the magic Lello bookstore from Poro. From Romania with love!

  • I am one of those people who is not into role-play or elves or dragons or any of that. But, I loved the glimpse into that world provided by Nicoleta. I loved her obvious enthusiasm. And the description of the perfume sounded divine. I need some support while slaying my excel dragons! I am in the US.

  • I didn’t know that each of the fragrances from Atelier Matier’s portfolio is focused on a single natural raw material, selected from the best terroir and with respect for fair trade. A quite interesting fact.
Santal Blond sounds lovely and santal is a favorite of mine.
Thanks for the review and for the giveaway!

  • Nicoleta! ❤️ What a fun review! I adore learning about a house committed to “slow luxury” with a strong ethical backbone! Atelier Matieri will certainly take a high place on my list. I am looking forward to reading all the excellent CaFleureBon reviews of this house! Thank you for this opportunity! ❤️ USA

  • Dorothee Teboul says:

Beautiful and evocative description of Santal Blond. I have always loved the part in Lord of the rings where the elves spend time recuperating in Rivendale, and imagining Santal Blond as part of the healing experience makes me want to try it! I live in France.

  • Lord of the Rings trilogy being one of my favorite movies, I read with much interest Nicoleta’s review of Atelier Matier Santal Blond, and enjoyed the description of a day in Rivendell with the hierarchy of notes in Atelier Matier Santal Blond. This association with a very popular story makes the perfume and it’s notes memorable. I can’t wait to try the cardamom cookies if or when I get a chance. It’s good to know that Atelier Matier Santal Blond can be happily worn even while combating Excel dragons 🙂 No experience with this brand, yet. Thanks for your review and draw. From USA.

  • I like how Nicoleta is describing Santal Blond by Atelier Matieri as “minimalist but not simplistic with a commitment to “slow luxury” and a strong ethical backbone”. What can be a better as a good, creamy, luminous, relaxing, contemplative, soothing, milky elf-like sandalwood scent, I don’t know what. So this offer definitely spark my interest. Thank you!

  • A beautiful olfactive journey here in this review – I am especially intrigued since a am playing RPG games (not on the computer) myself. Well done 🙂

  • wandering_nose says:

I am so impressed by Nicoleta’s ‘niche within niche’ tendency to associate fragrances with scenarios from games. One of the most unique combined interests I have heard of :). Santal Blond sounds calm, wearer-friendly and modern to me so it was very interesting to read about how it would play out against the backdrop of an elvish Rivendell fairytale world. The concept of a unisex fragrance that suits for an overall comfortable wear makes it even more appealing. I am based in Dublin, Republic of Ireland, EU

  • I am far from the world of games, so it was very interesting for me to read Nicoleta’s description and her comparisons with the characters and the world of the game (although no, I am familiar with Skyrim and really love the atmosphere of this game). Again, a wonderful poetic description, Santal is a completely meditative aroma itself and Nicoleta managed to convey the mood of the fragrance very precisely

  • I’m interested in that this is deemed by the reviewer to be unisex and perfect for everyday wear. US

  • carlos_lager says:

Thank you for the great review! I can relate to the way Nicoleta associates perfumes with different sort of characters. I also often picture a specific person, when smelling a fragrance (allthough not Fantasy related).
I havent smelled any fragrance by Atelier Materi yet. But the not list for this one sounds really beautiful.
    Greetings from Austria (EU)

  • Um, a Tolkien summoning scent of elves?! Yes please. The perfect scent for the coming cold of the NH sea coast.

  • Nicoleta draws some interesting parallels with the world of Lord of the Rings (Rivendell, Lothlorien) and the unfolding of Santal Blond. The spiced woody fragrance does sound unisex but ethereal and comforting. The description of the fragrance as scented Mithril Armor gave me a chuckle. I’m in MD, USA.

  • Great review. This sounds right up my alley. I love scents that I can wear with a suit that mostly I can enjoy and not overpower the office. Thanks for the draw from the great USA

  • Nicoleta, as always, gave us a great review with a great text and nice and evocative pictures an collages. Even I was never a fan, I love the references of Tolkien´s Lord of the Rings . I agree when you say that Atelier Matieri does with their perfumes “architectural constructions, minimalist but not simplistic” and focus on a single natural raw material: here we have the “santalum album” that Lucas Sieuzac constract (like an architect) an armor for every ocasion. I live in Spain, EU.

  • Loved this review! I’m a huge lord of the rings fan so I appreciated the reference and nod to Rivendale and forest of Lothlorien. Super Intriguing as I have not had the chance to explore this house. The way notes are structured and displayed is very creative as well. Based in the US

Top: Waking up in Rivendell: bright, healing, reinvigorating (Bergamot, Cardamom)

Heart: A library near the sea: luminous, relaxing, contemplative, soothing, milky (Jasmine, Sandalwood)

Base: Lothlorien ancient rites: warm, bacchic, sweet, velvety, smoky (Hinoki Bourbon, Tonka Bean)

  • I am not much into role-playing and costuming, but waking up in Rivendell: (bright, healing, reinvigorating), then visiting a library near the sea (luminous, relaxing, contemplative, soothing, milky) and participating in Lothlorien ancient rites (warm, bacchic, sweet, velvety, smoky) sounds like a journee i wanna take part. Can i join?

There’s a little bit of Yin – elf, human or hobbit and Yang – ork or goblin in all of us, doesn’t matter who you are. Lord of The Rings is a book everyone should read.
Complex , green , slightly smoky , and classy , Santal Blond is quite versatile. I can wear it on multiple occasions , from working with clients at the tailor store, to casual walk in the park.
    Thank you all

  • I like the part of the review which reads as follows: “Each of the fragrances from Atelier Matier’s portfolio is focused on a single natural raw material, selected from the best terroir and with respect for fair trade”. I’m very interested in trying a fragrance from Atelier Matieri. I need to add more fragrances which have sandalwood to my collection. I live in MD., U.S.A. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  • “Of course, the niche within the niche of people that would find any speck of joy in reading about this sort of thing is SO narrow, that I would just end up talking to myself”

You can talk to me 🙂 I like tabletop games , D&D , Warhammer 40,000 , Warhammer Age of Sigmar is what I play
Since I own Atelier Materi sample set I’ll share my thoughts on the line , with the exclusion of Narcisse Taiji , when I bought the set the fragrance was not yet on the market.
I do enjoy all , but one . Well made , interesting mix of classic and contemporary kind of brand.
To me there’s a tie for the best Atelier Materi, Cacao Porcelana and Santal Blond are both fantastic. Poivre Pomelo would be my third favorite.
“rich and sweet wafts of jasmine”
    I barely detect any jasmine.
Miruvor is a potion , replenishing your strength and vitality, and it doesn’t contain alcohol as far as I can remember. On the other hand i can detect boozy facets in Santal Blond, probably coming from the Hinoki. To me the fragrance is also quite powdery.
    Thanks a lot

What sparks my interest based on Nikoleta’s review is her in depth and detailed review of Atelier Matieri Santal Blond and how she tied this into one of my favorite book and film series Lord of the Rings. I loved Cacao Porcelana and would love the chance to try Santal Blonde. I am from the USA.

  • Thanks for the interesting review, I was transported to the LotR landscapes 🙂 I would visit there if I could! I liked Cacao Porcelana from Atelier Materi and would gladly sample this one as well. I live in Finland.

  • What I like the most about this review is reference to Lord of the Rings. I never thought about the scent in terms of interpretation of places created in books and Lord of the Rings is my beloved book of all time so after reading the review I just want immediately to try the Santal Blond and go back to reading abour Rivendell and Lothlorien. I live in EU, Poland.

  • The idea of “imponderable architectural constructions, minimalist but not simplistic with a commitment to ‘slow luxury’ and a strong ethical backbone” is so very appealing to me in scent and life. Santal Blond sounds gorgeous. I’m in the US.

  • With so many new houses , market is overcrowded. I admire new brands like Atelier Materi , who follow their own path , and don’t want to step in someone else’s shoes.
Presentation made me say “Wow” . The cap looks like it’s made of concrete , maybe it is actually.
Cardamom cookies , warm glass of milk and book in my hands, I find the whole Santal Blond idea inviting , and cozy .

  • What strikes me about Santal Blond is of the way perfumer made not overly complex fragrance , whiteout making “something in the vain of” kind of scent.
A lot new sandalwood fragrances , including niche , nowadays are nothing more than a washed up versions of already existing once on the market, with just a little bit of twist.
The smoky, woody and milky parts is what draws me in
Santal Blond . The fragrance i think is made for people who know what they like , and take no “NO” for an answer.
    Exciting giveaway, USA

  • What a beautiful review from a big fan of the LOTR series.

““Kick off your shoes. Unburden yourself with song. Tell each other tales. Dance around the table. Leave the cleaning up for the morning. Then go outside and look at the stars.”

That quote is what this fragrance reminds me of and where this review took me.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I’m on the same page with Nicoleta , just a few days ago in Petite Fumee giveaway, I related the fragrance to The Hobbit , Misty Mountains of Middle Earth , and the dwarves. Now Nicoleta did almost the same connection between Lord of the Rings , Rivendell, elves and Santal Blond. That’s awesome
My introduction to Atelier Materi fragrances was at Jovoy in Paris , by far the best niche boutique in the world.
Santal Blond in my opinion is one of the 3 best, together with Cacao Porcelana, and Cuir D’Iris.
I do get the cardamom cookies comparison, the spices, the citruses , dusty sandalwood, and the jasmine. What I also get is red wine smell, I perceive it clearly.
Santal Blond is such a special fragrance, winning a bottle would make me really happy.
I made some muled wine today , with cardamom, anise, and orange slices , I’m about to sip a bit, and eat some cardamom cookies my mom made for me , I feel festive
