April Aromatics Wild Summer Crush review

Was it fate that my sample of April Aromatics Wild Summer Crush arrived at my door on the first day this season where temperatures dipped below the freezing point? I had just about resigned myself to the fact that the chilled air and grey skies could only be signs of the impending New England winter season, however, it took just one spritz of  April Aromatics Wild Summer Crush to lift my spirits and transport me to a land where sun and warmth are eternal.

Tanja Bochnig, award winning founder and perfumer, explains that while she typically wants to project a deeper story and message with her creations, with this one, she wanted to keep things a little lighter for a change.  April Aromatics Wild Summer Crush is just that, an ode to the memory of an encounter she had on a hot, sultry summer night in the fruit orchards of southern Italy.

We escaped the crowded party and found refuge amongst the citrus trees and rose bushes that grew in luxurious abundance.…how can I forget…my summer crush, take me back…I am longing for you…” – Tanja Bochnig

I hope we all have fond memories of a joyful summer crush that we can look back on and smile, no matter how long ago it was or where life has taken us. For me, it was the summer I graduated from high school before heading off to college that my boyfriend, Valentino (yes, that is his real name), and I travelled to his home country of Jamaica to visit his extended family in the lush green mountains of this tropical paradise.

Despite being over two decades ago, I still remember being able to indulge in fresh fruits purchased from roadside stands outside the farms where they were grown. The notes of grapefruit, mandarin, yuzu and fruit peels in April Aromatics Wild Summer Crush are as realistic as taking a bite out of the freshly plucked fruit itself. This is not a passing light citrus that leaves you longing for more, this is a dense, lush mix of citrus fruits including the juice, flesh and skins.  If, like me, you love citrus in perfume but not how fleeting the notes typically are, this is a scent you must try. This masterful blend defies the common misconception that natural perfumes are fleeting and unnuanced.  It is like magic that these citrus fruits remain for hours on your skin and, for me, are such a lovely reminder of my Caribbean escape.

My trip was not a postcard tropical getaway, it took me to parts of the country not typically seen by tourists. I remember being followed around by curious children who had never met anyone from outside their mountain village let alone a pale-skinned girl from the US with a funny accent.  We stayed with my boyfriend’s brother, sister-in-law and nephew, who graciously gave up their space to accommodate us. Despite the lack of indoor plumbing, the warmth and welcoming nature of the entire community made this a week of my life I will never forget. It was also my first realization that life, even in a tropical paradise, is not always as rosy as the travel brochures want you believe.

Which brings me to another part of April Aromatics Wild Summer Crush that caught my attention, the Uhuru Rose Otto from Africa. I had not run across this rose before so, I reached out to Tanja to shed some light on what the difference is from the more traditional rose oils and why she had chosen it:  “Actually, this rose is a very special rose, it comes from a place in Kenya and is a rare, one of a kind certified organic rosa damascena, which not only has the benefits of smelling divine, its existence is helping and supporting the local people who live in the area. Although it is only a small part of my creation and not the main player, it blends beautifully into the other ingredients and gives the perfume a “heart”.

My summer crush faded after we returned to the US and I went off to college while he finished his senior year of high school. Twenty-some years later, who would have thought that a perfume called Wild Summer Crush would dust off my cherished memories of that trip and how it impacted my life?

Notes: Pink Grapefruit, Red Mandarin (Italy), Green Tea Blend, Fruit Peels, Uhuru Rose Otto (Africa), Neroli (Morocco), Yuzu (Japan), Coconut, Silky Woods, Tobacco.

Disclaimer: I would like to thank Tanja Bochnig of April Aromatics for the sample of Wild Summer Crush My opinions are my own.

  • It was a very interesting story that Rachel told about her trip and how she associated with Wild Summer Crush. I´d really love to try this my self as I love citrus fragrances but the ones that have a different twist. I´m from the U.S.

  • I love The name” Wild Summer Crush” As Teenagers or young adults we think of past Summers when we had that one special crush on someone. This Fragrance sounds like it will take you back to those days. Summertime can mean beautiful trips, that will last forever in our memories. Thank you for this Chance. USA

I did not think I would like wearing citrus but Pomelo Paradis by Atelier Cologne changed my mind. I really like the fact that the rose is sourced in a way that benefits the area from which it was from. The 7 Virtues is similarly socially conscious and that’s why I recently bought one of their perfumes. I don’t think I had a summer crush, for some reason most of my crushes developed in autumn or winter! But the mix of citrus used here (of which yuzu especially interested me) sounds divine. Thanks for the draw. I live in the US.

A wild summer crush sounds ideal in the face of winter descending! I also had my first summer crush in high school living in Madagascar. I remember the optimism and euphoria. I’m keen to try more natural perfumes and have been wanting to explore April Aromatics for some time. So keen to win a 15ml bottle. I live in France

  • Nice story Rachel! Remind me when I first arrive to Brazil (Bahia) where finally lived for 14 years: the smell of the fruit in the air… there was no crush involved unfortunately! My memories of my first summer crush involves summer but in a beach, more briny and marine. The name of the scent” Wild Summer Crush” is perfect to tell the memory of an encounter of Ms. Bochnig. Crushes in summer are the best, a brief encounter are even better… the scent transporting you in time to that part of your life is amazing. Citrus scents are not just for summer, they work so good to lift our spirits in cold times. In this a dense a mix of citrus fruits including the juice, flesh and skins gives us the whole citrus experience: being in a orchard. The fragrance sound succulent, opulent, and seductive whit this special Rose from Uhuru land. I live in Spain, EU.

  • This fragrance sounds absolutely fantastic. I’m actually heading to Jamaica next week, my second trip to this amazing country in this lifetime, and I am already imagining the beauty and the scents of Jamaica, particularly the fruits. The amazing variety of fruits- juicy and luscious and so sparkling fresh. Fresher than anything you can get in the US, perhaps with the exception of peaches at their peak in various parts of the south.
I love citrus notes and for me, the “peels” mentioned in the notes of this perfume creation are the most intriguing.
As for my first summer crush: rose would be one of the most distinctive scent memories- being picked up for my very first date, by a crush of several months, he wore Joop but brought roses and I’ll never forget the combo of the Joop on his jean jacket and the first roses I ever received.
I can’t wait to experience this fragrance. The crush never faded…and will always stick with me as a beautiful scented memory. Which sounds a lot like the inspiration for this perfume.

  • I particularly enjoyed the colorful story of Italy and the inspiration behind this creation. After reading this review I can already feel how nicely this perfume would sit on the skin with a warm, light summer breeze. Thank you Rachel for the lovely review and Tanja Bochnig for generosity, I am from EU.

  • The real life story of a past summer crush was a nice touch to the review. The citrus description sparked my interest. I don’t know if I’m over my first summer crush. US

  • Lovely. The Uhuru Rose Otto from Africa really sparks my interest. I love that it helps support the people in the community. Even if it is just a small part of the composition. I really never had any summer crushes. We didn’t get to any exotic locales, just to visit my grandparents on a tiny crabbing village island in Maryland. No crush-worthy material there. lol. I am in the US.

  • The amazing photos and interesting details spark my interest. I live in Poland, EU. My first summer crush was fabulous.

  • Rachels review is great as always. A very good descripción which makes Who read It almost feel how the perfume smells like. I could try this perfume and It is just amazing. One great new creation from this amazing House!

My name is Edgar and I am writing from Spain!!

  • Wow, thank you Rachel for this wonderful introduction to the house. I’m particularly interested in the Uhuru rose note which would be a first and I’ve not yet found a rose I didn’t love 🙂 My first summer crush was an epic falling in love as a sprouting teenager – I still remember the day and the look that got me swooning – the flowers on the meadow were mimosas but roses reign supreme in my love memories. It sounds like Wild Summer Crush would take a spot in the heart 🙂 I’m in USA

  • Rachel’s memories from her trip and review of April Aromatics Wild Summer Crush reminds us of the power of scent to rekindle old memories. April Aromatics Wild Summer Crush seems more a summer or spring scent from the cheerful, citrus notes presented, but one could use cheer any time, summer, winter, fall, or spring. From USA.

  • I love the name of this fragrance. The notes line up perfectly. Wild Summer Child is everything I want to be during the dead of Winter. I enjoyed reading about the different type of rose Tanja used.

My first summer crush takes me to memories of bike rides around the neighborhood. It was the first time a boy ask me to kiss him. I was scared and told him no. LOL! Secretly, I wanted to though.

Thanks for the review and the giveaway. I’m in VA, USA

  • In the creation of Wild Summer Crush we once again see just how intertwined our sense of smell is to our strongest memories and the emotion associated with those memories. So much emotion is conveyed through smell and both Tanja and Rachel demonstrate this enduring power that our sense of smell has through this wonderful and quite personal review.

As a male, Wild Summer Crush sounds quite enjoyable as I favor citrus heavy fragrances in the summer but realistic citrus is always such a fleeting scent profile. Wild Summer Crush seems the exception to this thus I would really like to get my nose on this one.

    I’m in the USA.

  • Claumarchini says:

Wild Summer Crash seems what I call “happy scents” : fragrances that puts a smile on your face as soon as you wear them, that evoke light and sweet memories, love it! Who doesn’t remember those summer crushes, the sea, the sand, the sweet talk, the sadness of the first week’s back home longing to still be there… I love citruses but they disappear very soon on my skin so I am really intrigued by this one since Rachel says it is really persistent! Greetings from Italy!

  • This sounds like a sojourn to the tropics. The green tea, citrus variety, zest and coconut remind me of a sun-soaked beach at the equator. I’ve never heard of Uhuru rose otto either. Glad to know it’s supporting a worthy cause. When I had my first summer crush, I really felt like I was growing into a new phase of my life. I’m in MD, USA.

  • This is certainly true, I myself felt that Wild Summer Crush was created to cheer me up and take me to a land where the sun and warmth are eternal.

  • Wonderful description and beautiful conception! Citrus scents are currently my most used so I am attracted to this juicy pyramid! Also interested about that african rose: “Uhuru Rose Otto from Africa, which not only has the benefits of smelling divine, its existence is helping and supporting the local people who live in the area.”
Thank you for the introduction and generous draw, I live in the EU.

  • The combination of citrus and rose sound very beautiful and different. I’ve been hearing a lot about yuzu in fragrance and have yet too try one. I remember a summer crush I had- my best friend had two French foreign exchange students visit. I and I had a crush on the one named Roman. He was shaggy haired, green eyed and boy did that one hurt! I was crushed. In Tx.

  • Such a zesty, uplifting but also persistent citrus fragrance sounds really appealing in the deep winter we are about to drift towards. Reading about the many different kinds of citruses, with peel and juice and skin just made my mouth water.
I wouldn’t call this a summer crush in the specific meaning of the word, but it did happen during summer so I will still count it: it was surrounded by the smells of fresh, strong mountain air, fir and smoke.
    I am in the EU.

  • Rebecca A Brokaw says:

Rachels’ review of Wild summer Crush was a lovely reminiscence of a young romance and travel to an exotic land.
I do love citrus and rose scents.
“And, I would love to travel “to a land where sun and warmth are eternal”.
thanks so much. I live in the USA.

  • I truly want to try this fragrance. I can like citrus in fragrances very much. I became very interested in trying this fragrance when I read: “The notes of grapefruit, mandarin, yuzu and fruit peels in April Aromatics Wild Summer Crush are as realistic as taking a bite out of the freshly plucked fruit itself. This is not a passing light citrus that leaves you longing for more, this is a dense, lush mix of citrus fruits including the juice, flesh and skins. When I was in fourth and fifth grade, I was very fascinated with a girl who was my age. I believe that she was the first person who I liked that much. Now, I think she isn’t attractive or fascinating at all. Also, from what I’ve heard, she works at a psychiatric ward and gives too many people medicine which they don’t even need, medicine which isn’t good for many of the people who end up in a place like that. In other words, I’m glad that I waited for something better than that.
I live in MD., U.S.A. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  • Thank you for this beautiful story, it transported me to my childhood memories: I spent my summers at the countryside near the Baltic Sea and I spent all the time with friends and i want to say they all were my crushes, because they made me so happy and free, and the crush followed after – when the summer was over and i needed to return to colorless and boring city, it was heartbreaking.
What attract me the most about this scent is the combination of different citruses, especially yuzu and pink grapefruit, green tea accord, then also the rose. Sounds wonderful and revitalising.
I live in the EU, thank you for amazing draw!

Oh, thank you Rachel! This was such a refreshing read, I thoroughly enjoyed it! So amazing to see that a fragrance was the key to opening that magic memory box and reminiscing of the unbeatable moments of youth and happiness. I need to admit I almost (though with a heavy heart) gave up on citrus fragrances due to their famous lack of lasting power. Not too much into over-spraying so I felt as if one of my loves was taken away from me (I love fruit, I’d give many things in life for it). So this citrus fruit focused fragrance is a big, resounding “yes, please!” from me straight away! I need to try it. The notes totally steal my heart, especially as I also love tea. My first summer crush I will never forget for the circumstances we had met in and for the loving person they turned out to be. So grateful for those memories. I am based in the Republic of Ireland, EU

  • Cool seeing these photos from about the time I was born! I’ve been meaning to sample April Aromatics for a while now. A tropical citrus sounds so good. I am from New England.

  • Michael Prince says:

What sparked my interested on Wild Summer Child based on Erica’s review is her reliving her summer in Jamaica between high school and college with her then boyfriend and experiencing the real fresh fruits, nature, and things the typical tourists done see. This sounds like a beautiful fresh fragrance I would love to try. I don’t have any summer crush stories like that of my own. I am from the USA.

Thank you for the beautiful review Rachel and for giving us that fascinating insight into your child hood crush.

I found this name, the notes that inspired this fragrance and all the associations that it draws.

I loved reading up on the Uhuru Rose Otto. I went into a google deep dive.

My first summer crush was on a school trip in North India. I still remember the smells of the fields that we visited and all the food that we ate.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Lovely review Rachel! What sparks my interest about Wild Summer Child is your description of it as a dense, lush mix of citrus rather than most citrus fragrances that are light and fleeting. That is definitely unusual and worthy of note – particularly for an all natural fragrance. My first summer crush was on a school trip to England – he had a gorgeous posh accent and hair like a young Beatle! I live in the US.

  • It’s funny how a smell can take you back years, just like that… Amazing!! The notes are very appealing from around the world… Big fan of tea & tabacco fragrances!! Love the review & memories giving, excellent job Rachel!! USA oh yeah my first summer crush involved a skating rink LoL good old days!!

Thanks Cafleurebon for this special draw an good luck everyone!!
