April Aromatics Rosenlust (2011) Perfume Review – Time Lapse Photography + Straight from the Heart Draw

Imagine yourself in a field of roses at daybreak, where the morning dew gently glistens upon the petals of the fragrant flowers.  This was  the inspiration for Rosenlust by Natural Perfumer Tanja Bochnig, (the 2014 Art and Olfaction award winning perfumer from Germany). According to Ms. Bochnig, she created Rosenlust after a trip to Turkey where she gathered Rose Otto petals early one morning when the sun was still low on the horizon.  This is the time of day that is perfect for harvesting roses as it protects the women who pick the flowers as well the blooms from the intense heat.

On her trip, she fell in love with the Turkish people, their purity, sweetness and their amazing hospitality. All Ms. Bochnig’s perfumes connect to a chakra, and Rosenlust opens the heart chakra in the way the Turkish people opened her own heart. A fascinating aspect to this April Aromatics perfume is it "macerates" in Herkimer diamond for several months; this process creates an aura of "protective" energy which makes the scent more potent and expansive.

Rosenlust is well named as it is a rose lover's fantasy. In addition to Rose Otto, Ms. Bochnig added rose absolue from Bulgaria.  It has a distinct aroma and is quite different than the scent of rose otto; it's more honeyed and peeks through at the base. The third rose comes from India and the fourth from England.  Using four different roses from both Eastern and Western locales, brings a diversity of energies and cultures that stand on their own yet blend seamlessly. Ms. Bochnig adds  precious seeds from a tropical hibiscus plant, and two more roses of other genuses, rose geranium and rosewood, to the composition. Rosenlust is not loud nor is it a dirty rose, rather it is subtle and soft, with slightly woody and citrus accords sweetened by tonka beans.

The beauty of  a well crafted natural perfume is that its story is told over a period of time and that is difficult to achieve in a fragrance created with mostly synthetics.  Rosenlust is the scented equivalent of time lapse photography, where everything moves in slow motion. When I spritz on Rosenlust, it goes on slightly balmy, as if infused with mint from an English garden and there is a slightly fruity smell of  grapefruit freshly picked from a citrus grove. At first the roses are subdued, as if you are walking down a wooded path and see a field of roses in the distance, their delicate scent carries on a light breeze.   As the perfume develops, the rose becomes rounder and seems to fold over its petals layer by layer until hours later, Rosenlust takes on an ethereal glow and the scent of  sweet pollen at the center is revealed as the rose is now in full bloom.  Rosenlust warms my soul and Ms. Bochnig has created a rose perfume that is after my own heart.

Notes:  100% natural extracts of Rose Otto/Turkey, Rose/Bulgaria, Rosewater Rosewood/Brasilien, Pink Grapefruit/USA, Ambrette Seed, Tonkabean, Orris Root

Editor's Note:  CaFleureBon was the first US based perfume site to review the inaugral line of April Aromatics Perfumes on September 27, 2011; Rosenlust, Rose D'Orange, Liquid Dreams, Nectar of Love, Unter den Linden, Precious Dreams and Bohemian Woods.   Tanja was named CaFleureBon's Rising Star in 2011-Natural Perfumeryin our Best and Worst of 2011 perfumes . As our writing team has grown over the past three years, new editors and contributors discover Tanja Bochnig's perfumes and each have experienced an emotional connection.   I am happy that Steve chose Rosenlust as his first April Aromatics review, as it doesn't get the "love" it deserves from the fragrosphere. Tanja is a true Rennaisance woman; a natural perfumer, a model, a yoga practioner, a photographer and a loving mother.  April Aromatics is now available in the US at Luckyscent.-Michleyn Camen, Editor in Chief.

  • I have only recently heard of April Aromatics and was wondering about Calling All Angels and Rosenlust. The first is intriguing and the second because I love roses and Rosenlust sounds delightful. I live in the US.

  • Donna Spiegel says:

I love beautiful Rose scents and this sounds like it captures Rose perfectly. I live in the US. Would be thrilled to try. Thank you for the draw!

  • A fragrance with the word lust in it has got to be good. I have not had the pleasure of coming across any April Aromatics as of yet. US

  • Tanja’s entire line is very well composed, each one does certainly align the body, mind and spirit! Calling all angels is a favorite of mine followed by precious Woods. Rosenlust is beautiful and my small sample has been saved for those times that I need some extra heart expansion. I am in the US and Thanks to April Aromatics for the draw!

  • it was so hard to break of the imagining myself in that rose garden, but i shall… if i must.

i’ve never tried an April Aromatics, mostly because it’s only just become available here in the usa. a friend recently met Tanja, and assures me her ethereal beauty is inherent in her presence, her perfumes and perhaps the air around her! what’s not to like?!

i would be honored to try Rosenlust as my first, especially as a rose perfume is somewhat of a gauge of a perfume house for me.

I was delighted to read about the energetic vibrations of the Rose in many aspects as part of this review; I have several roses in my garden and feel they contribute an aura of joy as well as safety (physically–through the thorny shrubs and strong roots–and emotionally) to my home. I also make medicine with them for myself and my family, to help soothe our often overstimulated selves. So I would truly enjoy a natural perfume such as Rosenlust, that so lovingly celebrates the many facets of this beautiful plant.

    I am in the US.

  • I love roses, and I have heard so many things about April Aromatics perfumes! I would love to try Rosenlust, which sounds perfect for summer. I am in the US, thank you.

  • I am longing for the sample set now that Luckyscent carries the line but my bank account won’t allow right now. Rosenlust is the scent I think I will like best. I love roses and have been really enjoying naturals lately. I am in the US. Thanks

  • Rosenlust seems to be a many-faced rose perfume! I would really like to try it, because I am a sucker for roses (and violets, but that’s another story). So far, I love Caling All Angels from the ones I tried, I love its warmth and unexpectedness. I live in Bulgaria, EU. Thank you for the draw!

  • What a complex sound you have given this Rose perfume. Rosenlust – It sounds truly beautiful and soothing, delicate and refined. That’s what I like about it. Your review is well spoken and I would enjoy very much to sample this. I do love Rose and have never had the pleasure to sample any of April Aromatics perfumes. I live in the US. Thank you

  • I absolutely love the way you have described Rosenlust. I have never had the pleasure to try Tanja’s work but I believe it to be Art from what I have read. What do I like about this review? I adore the subtlety and color that works its way through the review, at the same time it’s very strong. Rose may seem easy to manipulate, standing so well as a single note but to create a worthy orchestra around it is no mean feat. Exciting! I an International. Thanks so much for the draw.

  • I have never had the pleasure of trying April Aromatics, but am very intrigued by natural perfumery. Your description makes it sound tender and yet blooming at the same time and the notes sound beautiful.
    I live in Australia.

  • I have long loved the rose both as a flower and a beguiling scent. I actually get sad when I smell a beautiful rose and find it has no scent at all. I have also longed to sample Tanja’s beautiful line of natural perfumes. I will one day, it’s on my “bucket list”. Thank you xo
I live in the City of Roses, Portland, OR USA

  • The roses in this fragrance sound so gorgeous. I am becoming bored of the “dirty” rose genre, so it is great to see a perfumer recognize the glorious rose.

“Calling All Angels” is one of my favorites from this house. I live in the U.S.

  • It may sound rhetorical, but I would love to try Rosenlust because I’ve never encountered a rose-based fragrance that was able to really fascinate me.. reading the review, I imagined a juicy, progressively deeper and creamier take on rose theme that could work wonders on the right skin chemistry and personality.
Let’s admit rose soliflores are not the easiest to wear, but I think in this case complexity is an advantage because really each species of the Queen of Flowers smells – more or less – different, each one providing a characteristic olfactory aspect going from dewy and ethereal to wild and almost carnal. I am also intrigued by the melange of different cultures delivered by this creation via roses.
I’ve never tried April Aromatics fragrances, it seems they’re not sold or easy to find where I live but I will consider buying samples because I keep on reading wonderful reviews about this House’s scents.
I am International (from EU, Italy), thanks for the chance.

  • I desperately want to try it because the description of its development is truly alluring! And, I also want to try everything rose, lol.

I live in South Africa and have not tried anything from April Aromatics, though I keep hearing of them 🙂

  • Marcopietro says:

I’ve never tried April’s fragrances but this description of Rosenlust is so fascinating that I wish to go on that fragrant dream.
    I live in Italy.

  • I’d like to win Rosenlust because I’ve heard good things about April Aromatics and I’ve yet to try any from the line. I’m also partial to rose and i think the rose + orris combination might be truly lovely.
    I’m in the EU, ty

Roses are one of my very favorite notes in perfumery and this sounds just right for warm days. April Aromatics is a lovely name for this line. I’m in the US; thanks for the review and draw!

  • Fazal Cheema says:

April Aromatics is emerging as one of the leading natural perfumery brands..its exciting there are roses from four countries in it including the most precious variety which is Bulgarian Rose…my favorite April Aromatics fragrance is Nectar of Love.. I am in the US…thanks for the lovely draw.

  • I haven’t tried any April Aromatics fragrances yet, but I’ve been reading such positive reviews about them. Lately, I’ve been craving rose notes and I would love to try this scent. I’m in the US. Thanks for the draw.

Love, love, love AprilAromatics! My favorite so far is Rose l’Oirange. I would love to give Rosenlust a try! Thanks.

I’ve not yet had the pleasure to try April Aromatics, but I would love to try Rosenlust, as it is a passion and a wonderful artistic challenge to construct beautiful natural perfumes. I live in the USA

  • Calling all Angels is a fave of mine. I’ve been meaning to try Precious Woods for a while. I am interested in Rosenlust because rose is one of my favorite notes in perfumery when it’s done right, and I am confident April Aromatics does just that because their ingenuity and the quality of their raw materials is outstanding.

I live in the USA. Thank you for the draw

  • Ifi Genial says:

I adore roses (especially the ones given with love from a man to his beloved one as an expression of love and admiration) so Rosenlust must be the most refined and elegant perfume version ever experienced and I would be more than delighted to win this sample.
As for April Aromatics perfumes to be honest, it is the very first time I am being informed about this house.
I live in the EU and I thank you for the opportunity to win a sample of Rosenlust.

  • I have not tried any April Aromatics but am interested in Unter Den Linden. Rosenlust sounds like a good one to try as I never want to miss a scent with grapefruit. 🙂 USA

  • Tanjas fragrances are amazing to say the least, my personal favorite is Liquid Dreams. I adore Rose fragrances which is probably the reason I would love it and its from Tanja. I also have a sort of fetish for her Jasmina…..I have a small decant and even though I am too scared to wear it out of the house, I tend to put it on for my own personal pure pleasure. USA here 🙂

  • I want to try Rosenlust because I love roses and when combined with the right ingredients is perfection. In addition, since this fragrance opens or is centered about the heart chakra makes it even more intriguing. There are few perfumes that accurately capture the true beauty of the rose; Rosenlust may be that one. I don’t have a favorite April Aromatics scent because they haven’t been readily available for me to sample here in the US. I cannot wait to try more of Tanja’s work! I’m in the US and thanks so much for this generous draw of Rosenlust pure paefume.

  • All April Aromatic fragrances sound so delightful. I really would want to try them all. Until now I only tried Liquid Dreams which is an awesome green and flowery citrus perfume. Perfect for a hot summer. Rosenlust sounds gorgeous.

Thank you Tanja and ÇaFleureBon for this wonderful draw. I’m in the EU, the Netherlands.

  • I have heard so many wonderful things about April aromatics and have wanted to try liquid Dreams
The four roses and the beautiful review will put dreams on the back burner and even if I don’t win I will buy Rosenlust blind

I haven’t a favorite April Aromatics *yet* but I suspect it’d be Rosenlust. I love roses and rose notes in perfume! I’m in the US. Thanks for the draw.

  • I absolutely adore rose perfume and only natural one. As one of the most precious oils, every drop of rose oil is carefully handled and crafted into such devine perfume. Rose has the finest and luxurious scent of all the florals, immensely love by women and men. My better half and I hold rose oil in the regards. Singapore.

  • Kim Morgan says:

I love roses of any kind. My grandmother had a decades-old rosebush in her yard, and when I was little, she would ask us to pick the prettiest flowers… then she would dry them, and use them in sachets. I love the dusty-sweet smell of those memories.

    US resident.

  • Anna in Edinburgh says:

What a fabulous name for a perfume and so apt, because roses both inspire and signify devotion.

I’m entering the draw to win Rosenlust because I am one of those rose lovers who diverts from the workaday path to sniff any and every rose that I encounter, and I am seeking to do the same for every rose perfume I encounter too. The scent of heaven, too joyous and complex to capture in words.

My home is in the UK so please include my entry in the “Anywhere Else in the World” category!

Many thanks, and I’m off now to smell the roses:-)

  • Laurentiu says:

I already know Nectar of Love, therefore I am sure that Rosenlust will be just like Nectar of Love: very rich, dazzling and with high quality ingredients!

I am from Europe. Thanks for the draw!

  • I am aware of this brand through the reviews here on Cafleurebon, but I’ve never tried any. I have wanted especially to try Nectar of Love and Unter den Linden. I love the part of the Turkish rose harvest. I’d love to be sitting amongst all those petals! I am in the US. Thanks for the draw.

    I’m in New Zealand.

  • I would love to win Rosenlust because the name is so sexy and intriguing! I don’t have a fav April Aromatics fragrance because I’m a student and spend my extra money on cheap eats (!) but I love fragrances and would really love to experience this one.

    Sincerely,
