April Aromatics Lotus Rising Review

“The lotus flower blooms most beautifully from the deepest and thickest mud“ – Buddhist Proverb

Lotus – a flower with unparalleled resilience, a symbol of life, death, and rebirth often tied to spirituality inspired Tanja Bochnig during gloomy days in 2020 to create a fragrance that would offer hope and strength, and point us in the direction of illumination.

It is the law of nature that nothing is permanent, and Rota Fortunae- the wheel of fortune keeps turning on and on…and we can learn so much from the lotus flower. Its existence goes back to more than a hundred and a fifty million years back: lotus flowers are actually living fossils that survived the Ice Age, and their seeds can survive for thousands of years without water, under ice, or in the scorching sun. They are resistant to pollution, or a dirty environment, and usually grow in mud. Each day, they open their flowers petal by petal, each night they dive into muddy water, and each morning they bloom again, unsoiled – a symbol of purity, grace, and beauty which Tanja expressed through two vintage lotus absolutes, using (again) very high-quality ingredients, and staying true to her holistic approach to fragrances.

April Aromatics Lotus Rising opens with tenderly green nuances, but as with all-natural perfume, it is necessary to give it time, and your skin. At first, you witness the birth of a lotus flower rising brightly above a misty and calm surface, more like a reflection of a bud in the still water than the bud itself. And yet, within this tender bud is a promise of bloom: very soon the sunlit tones of frangipani bring warmth and just a light touch of sweetness to the composition, giving it an inner-light feeling of optimism and hope. A bud is born, and what a joy this is!

Slowly two lotuses begin to dance around each other, and all the other notes build up a stage, humming quietly in the background. It’s time to bloom, and lotus accords begin to prevail, gently embracing you in their floral tenderness and pulling you inward to the center of the mesmerizing flower, now fully opened, with fragile anthers made of jasmine, adding depth to the lotus centerpiece. As the fragrance further develops, the fascination of observing a lotus flower in full bloom gently quiets down and the feeling of calmness slowly takes over. Dusky and powdery elements rise like mist, covering gently the flowers. And the flower slowly, petal by petal closes down and sinks into a lake made of powdery iris and natural musks. The cycle has ended, only to be repeated again, with every new wearing: life, death, and rebirth, and beauty that comes within.

Notes: Vintage Pink Lotus, Vintage Lotus, Champaca, Frangipani, Iris, Botanical Musk Accord.

  • Not being familiar with lotus notes, hard to imagine from the review what April Aromatics Lotus Rising would actually smell like, except that with notes/accords such as Champaca, Frangipani, Iris, Botanical Musk Accord, it is likely to be a delightful perfume. Thanks for the draw and review. Writing from the USA.

  • I enjoyed Elena’s review of this fragrance, which seems to be ethereal and delicate. The dance metaphor really makes me think of classic ballet. I am drawn to lotus’ aquatic qualities and would love to see how works with frangipani, another floral note that can be elusive and hard to capture. I am in the USA.

I really enjoyed the comparison of the scent development with the life cycle of a lotus flower. I haven’t yet tried any offerings from April Aromatics the house has definitely been on my radar. Located in California, USA.

  • Bryant Worley says:

Elena laid this fragrance out perfectly, as we need something to brighten our days, during this gloomy darkness Covid-19 has caused. It was a perfect representation of life, death, rebirth – – rising from mud unscathed, then providing its fragrance to bring joy to those who are privileged to be in its presence., and doing it all over again, day by day. Being gently, tenderly provided with a calming greenness, sweetness, powderiness, muskiness – – ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…….

  • Oooohhhh, this was the most lovely review! I had no idea the lotus survived the ice age!!! How amazingly epic! I love the lotus so much I have a tattoo of one. I felt like I could smell every note with the beautiful description! I am in in Colorado USA and that you for the draw!!!

  • This sounds lovely. I’m sure I’ve never smelled non-synthetic lotus in a fragrance. I can imagine the depth and complexity the vintage extract brings to the composition. The rest of the notes, especially the iris and champaca, makes this seem like a very ethereal scent. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • I love that feeling of calmness that lotus imparts, as mentioned here. No surprise that it is the symbolic flower for yoga. I would love to smell these rare lotus essences that April Aromatis has used. Thank you for the review and draw. USA

  • A very poetic description of lotus flower in nature and in this fragrance. I actually don’t really think I know what lotus smells like. I have in mind a smell somewhat like a watery lily, but I don’t know why. It would be interesting to try this fragrance. I’m in MD.

A beautiful description by Elena I am intrigued and curious at the same time as to how lotus smells like and the botanical musk. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • I love the historical information that Elena included about the lotus flower, I had no idea about any of that. I always love learning, and I love how Elena dives into the background of whatever she reviews.

I really enjoy Tanja’s perfumes, and I have heard so many raves about Lotus Rising. I love perfumes with lotus as a note, but knowing this was made with vintage lotus absolute just makes it sound even more intriguing.

Thank you for the opportunity and good look to everyone! I am in the US.

  • This sounds amazing! I am always wanting to try the natural house April Aromatics. This sounds so beautiful and peaceful I love green scents and very much wish to sink into iris and soft musk. I am in U.K.

  • I’m in love of lotus flower….is so pure, so fresh, green & aquatic, it’s a natural scent, is like a breath of oxygen ….I love Elena’s poetry description of this perfume. Regards from EU/RO

  • I didn’t know lotus flower are that old. Wow. I love the smell of frangipani.

  • I tried this perfume and I can say it is like a fairy tale told on the skin.

Thank you Tanja for your Love made Perfumes!

  • What a stunning romantic and mystical review. The scented journey of those lotus buds, on their never ending rebirth, are just so delicately described.

  • I’m so looking forward to trying out this scent. From April Aromatics I love Nectar of love and Tempted Muse and Calling all angels has been under my radar as well.
In recent months I’ve been gravitating towards Lotus Flower Fragrances and Lotus Rising has been on my list as well. And if I was already eager to give Lotus Rising a try, after reading Elena’s piece now I’m overly excited. As always Elena’s descriptions are like poetry, such a pleasure to read.
Many thanks for this draw. I live in France.

  • I love the lotus flower, so delicate and elegant, like a veil of scented powder surrounding the body, on a sunny spring day. It is very interesting how one imagines Lotus smell and how one perceive the almost indistinguishable lotus scent. I currently live in Romania.

  • Claumarchini says:

I enjoyed very much Elena’s evocative and delicate review of what seems to be a truly great fragrance. I love lotus and its characteristics, I think that with this fragrance Tanja has really captured the mood of the majority of us, the need we have for strength and resilience in these hard hard times…. It would be such a pleasure to be able to try it thanks to the draw! I live in Milan, Italy

  • What a beautiful, poetic review by Elena!
The lotus flower is indeed worthy of being the symbol that it is, representing purity and evolution – it is not for nothing that the Lotus Sutra calls for us humans in search of harmony to plant our seed and just let it bloom.
I am glad that Ms. Tanja decided to wrap the purest lotus essences in other pure and natural, valuable extracts. The iris is, in my opinion, another pure and noble note, and the composition warmed by solar, more easy-going frangipani sounds like a dream.
It’s always nice to read how passionate and sensitive Elena is in her reviews – always gives a touch of intimacy.
I am in the EU. Thanks for the article and the draw!

  • I love the lotus as a symbol of profound from the ordinary (mud). Elena’s reviews are always so poetic to read. Usa.

  • Lately I did have some interests for lotus scents. In Chinese poetry, the plant is usually valued as a metaphor for integrity, for it grows out of mud but blooms ever so elegantly. It didn’t come to me that it could be a symbol of rebirth, until now, thanks to this beautiful introduction. (US)

  • Elena’s description of louts is exquisite. I love April Aromatics, this would be a great treat. Live in California. Thanks for the opportunity!

  • This sounds good, I don’t think I’ve smelled any fragrance with a lotus note before. Thank you for providing some historical context also. Regards from Finland.

  • I would love this fragrance very much because I have read some really good reviews on the brand April aromatics about pinkwood and calling all angels fragrances. I have never worn a lotus perfume it would be a total discovery. What I like is that Tanja bochnig wants to create perfumes to feel good in her body and in her mind. We have forgotten nowadays, but in the past perfumes had a therapeutic purpose. I live in France, UE.

  • Ellen’s review was very poetic and made me think that this scent is very apt as we come out of 2021 and open ourselves anew (hopefully.) Lotus blossom is a new scent to me but I am intrigued. I love in the U.S.

  • Lotus is Vietnamese national flower. I still remember when we were little, fresh lotus flowers were used to decorate the house. The smell was ethereal. This review is definitely intriguing and I would love to try Lotus Rising. Thank you for the great review and the draw. I am in the USA.

  • I enjoyed how this review took us on the journey of the lotus to describe how this perfume evolves on the skin. I live in the USA.

  • From Elena’s review, I really enjoyed how she goes through all of the most noticeable moments from this fragrance and it really helps describe what the fragrance would be like in real life. I live in the United States.

  • I enjoyed how Elena talked about the Lotus flower and it’s history. Lotus rising sounds like a winner. I would love to try. I have not tried any of the fragrances from April Aromatics. Thank you for the chance. California

  • Beautiful photos and great comparison of the flower to the development of the scent. Tanja Bochum seems the perfumer everyone talks about this days…
    I’m in Slovenia, EU

  • I love and own Ray of Light and Vetiver Coeur and admire more from April Aromatics. This tender Lotus flower sounds lovely and your and other’s joy with it sound promising. I’d love to win this to Germany, thanks for the draw!

  • patrick_348 says:

I liked the poetic quality of Elena’s review such as her description of two lotuses beginning to dance around one another. I’m so curious: does these mean that she can distinguish the two different lotus absolutes? That would be so cool. And her description of how the fragrance quiets down at the end is also compelling. I live in the US, in North Carolina.

  • I remember smelling lotus flower as a child and I would love to be transported back and experience some of that hopeful essence Elena writes about. Florida USA

  • Thank you, Elena, for describing how this fragrance develops and changes with time – I can appreciate knowing the fragrance journey, as it informs my choices on how best to wear a perfume. Lotus Rising sounds absolutely beautiful – “a symbol of purity, grace, and beauty”…this is exactly what I am searching for lately.
    Boston area

  • From Elena’s review, I really liked how heavily the lotus note in the fragrance was talked about. I really like the way that lotus flowers look and recently I was able to try it in perfumery with the new Jo Malone release. I live in Florida, US.

  • What an educational review! I have had no idea about the resilience of the lotus flower and its symbolic meaning. I love the inspirational part of the ever-continuous circle of life and death. Lotus is such a unique, beautiful flower and I wonder how it smells.
    I live in the EU.

  • bigscoundrel says:

I like the way the two lotuses dance together. Sounds wonderful for my wife. New Jersey USA.

  • Wow! I had no idea the lotus flower was a living fossil. This was a beautiful read. I have never smelled a lotus flower or its absolute, so all I have left is my imagination. From this description, it seems like the perfumer made a point to show that the lotus flower is not competing for attention with other scents, being the ancient and majestic scent itself, which makes me even more curious as to what this fragrance smells like.
I would like to enter the draw.

What an inspiring approach to creating a perfume! I am grateful people like Tanja Bochnig exist, to offer us all a fragrant spark of hope in these uncertain times. The idea of the cycle of life, dealth and rebirth that the structure of the composition has been based on is magical. I love the pictures Elena managed to evoke with her review – refreshing and calming at the same time. The notes of lotus flower along with iris and frangipani are among my very favorite florals. Thank you from Ireland

  • Such a beautiful and ethereal review. I really got the feeling of the lotus and its journey. This sounds so beautiful and calming a fragrance. Many thanks to Elena for a lovely review and many thanks to April Aromatics for making this draw possible. I’m in the USA

  • wallygator88 says:

Thank you for the excellent review Elena.

I have never semlt a lotus (it is our national flower), I’ve only always seen it from a distance.

I heard about this fragrance for the first time while reading the 2020 Best perfumes and I was instantly transported by the combination of lotus, champa, firangipani and musks to the tranquil memory of a large body of water in which we were travelling by boat. The sun was streaming and the water glistening and we came across this beautiful patch of lotus flowers, just floating and going with the flow, their waxy leaves rolling of marbles of water.

I haven’t smelt anything from this house before, unfortunately.

    Cheers form WI, USA

  • Juan_hernan says:

From Elena’s review, I really liked how much attention was given to the lotus note in the fragrance. Lotus flower is something that I have seen more and more in perfumery and so it is something that I would like to become more acquainted with. I live in the US.

  • I really enjoyed this review for the poetic imagery. It was like a meditation on the lotus. I’m not familiar with this house or the scent of lotus, but this is a beautiful review! I’m in the US.

  • doveskylark says:

Elena’s review made me think of a happy memory when I visited some lotus gardens on a hot August day in Kyoto. I remember feeling so much optimism and hope. I also remember a kind of musky smell. Oh, it was bliss, surely like Lotus Rising from April Aromatics.
    I live in the USA.

  • WeAreScentient says:

I love how Elena compares the development of the perfume to the blooming of the lotus. Always wanted to try these perfumes & this one sounds beautiful. I’m in Dublin Ireland.

  • I didn’t know lotuses were such resilient flowers; their delicate appearance and fragrance seems to suggest the opposite. I have only recently really smelled lotus in l’histoire oublieé de Dunhuang by Auphorie and really loved it. This sounds even more lotus prominent and the green lotus scent Elena describes sounds like a good counter balance to the more powdery pink lotus notes. Would love to try something from Tanja Bochnig! Marit in the UK
