Angelos Créations Olfactives Œillet review

There are those rare times when a  work of art – a painting, a poem, an opera, or in this case – a perfume, captures and bewitches you upon the very first encounter. This is exactly what happened when I was introduced to the ninth fragrance composed by Aggelos Balamis including his yet to be released Œillet. I met Aggelos, a young, humble and immensely talented Greek perfumer and founder of the brand Angelos Créations Olfactives two years ago at Esxcence 2019. I immediately knew he had great potential to shine as an artisan perfumer the knowledge, his passion for  fragrance  punctuated our conversation like sparks of olfactive light.

Each of Angelos Créations Olfactives Extrait de Parfums carry his unmistakable “Balamis” signature – full bodied florals, green chypres  rich spice-laden ambers and classic leathers, all are executed with skill and finesse. After having a chance to immerse myself in the collection via his sample set, it was the fiery carnation solliflore ablaze – L’Œillet that captured my nose and my heart. Aggelos explains L’Œillet’s provenance: “I always have been a great admirer of carnation note and accords in many masterpieces like Guerlain Derby and Caron Poivre; but also in fragrances that had this note hidden but so crucial for the whole structure of a floral composition. Carnation is one of the first things I asked to learn how to compose a basic structure of while taking my private classes in Paris. So, after being taught the basics I had a goal – to create my very own carnation soliflore. That’s how Angelos Créations Olfactives Œillet was born. The most important part was to find the right balance between tuberose absolute and pink peppercorn with the carnation, clove accord and musks.”

Angelos Créations Olfactives Œillet opens with the piquant, heated breath of a carnation blooming before suddenly bursting into layers upon layers of fiery petals spiked with spicy cloves and pink pepper. Œillet emanates old world opulence and glamour – lacquered red lips and fur stoles carelessly draped over the alabaster shoulders of elegant ladies during the belle époque and the early days of perfumery. Behind the sparkle of the opening, the soft creaminess of flowers beckon…heady pearlescent tuberose casts a bewitching spell, full-bodied, velveteen rose caressed by the powdery nuances of heliotrope; and pointillist dots of dew drops-adorned lily-of-the-valley, illuminating the heart. The florals enhance the molten red-gold warmth of the prima, the spicy carnation with daubs of watery, dewy freshness, and ensures that the structure retains its luminous weightlessness.

It is at the drydown that this perfume exhibits perfect pitch. The florals and spices seem to waltz together to an orchestra of musk, leather and vanilla which play in the background – a dark contrast to the shimmering brightness of the top. Vibrant, facetted, surprising, at once nocturnal and solar,  Œillet warms up on the skin, melding and becoming one with it. Like many yesteryear carnation classics, Angelos Créations Olfactives Œillet is opulent, rich and laden with a vast array of highest quality ingredients, orchestrated with perfect control and balance; I have yet to come across such complexity and majestic grandeur in a modern day artisanal carnation composition.

Top Notes:  Pink Pepper CO2, Lily of the Valley, Carnation; Heart Notes:  Tuberose Absolute, Rose, Heliotrope, Ylang-YlangClove Bud; Base Notes: Vanilla, Musk

Disclaimer:  I would like to kindly thank Aggelos Balamis of Angelos Créations Olfactives for the bottle of L’Œillett very generously provided for this review. My opinions are my own.

The description of, “a dark contrast to the shimmering brightness of the top” sounds intriguing to me. I don’t have a favorite of theirs. I’m in Louisiana, USA.

  • Aggelos Balamis is a new name to me. However, his carnation creation sounds heavenly and i love that it ends with a vanilla and a musk after the fiery carnation – like a large fire and then dying down with the softness of the musk. I’m in the UK and would love to try this one. cheers.

Œillet sounds very exciting. I don’t have own any carnation dominant fragrances, but I really appreciate this note and I would really love to try this perfume. I particularly like how well composed this fragrance sounds and I like that it has dark contrast in the bottom notes to contradict the brightness of the top. I never tried anything from Aggelos Balamis, but I’ve been reading about his creations on this website and he sounds like an amazing perfumer. I look forward to trying his work and discovering his next creations. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • The reference to Caron Poivre caught my attention quickly. I have yet to try an Angelos Créations Olfactives fragrance, but since I love rich and opulent perfumes, I can’t wait! I’ve heard a few rave reviews from friends. I’m in the US. Thanks!

  • I have never tried any Angelos Créations Olfactives. This is the first time I have heard of them and am glad I have. I have been looking for a great carnation soliflore or carnation-centric perfume for years. They are hard to find and often not well done which is a shame because it is such a beautiful note. I found one that I love but it’s been discontinued. Œillet sounds lovely especially since it harks back to old world glamour and a time when many of the best carnation fragrances were created. In the US.

Thanks for the draw! That note breakdown seems lovely! I definitely want a smell! From USA.

Ohhhh, I have been dying to try this line after all the wonderful reviews and mentions on the best of lists. This sounds completely like something I would love, vintage retro, sexy! Plus, I adore spicy carnation notes. I have missed out on his sample sets so I don’t have a favorite yet but, I can’t wait to try. Thank you for letting us know about this upcoming release. US

  • I have never tried anything from this line before, but like the perfumer, I’m passionate about carnation fragrances, especially spicy ones. I’d love to have a perfume like Caron Poivre. I’m in the USA.Nina

  • Neringa’s article immediately transported me to a glamorous, luxurious ball in the beginning of the last century.
I find carnation to be a very “individual” note – difficult to combine without eating up all the other notes, and yet, too important to be thrown in a corner and be overpowered by other notes.
So I am very curious about how carnation can coexist with tuberose, rose and lily of the valley, and later dry down into a spicy blend of florals, musk, vanilla and leather.
I have heard much praise about Aggelos as a talented new perfumer, but have never smelled any of his creations.
    Writing from EU.
    Thanks!

  • NituNicolae says:

Would be lovely to compare this fragrance to Carnal Flowers by Frederic Malle, both contaning carnation and turberose absolute. Haven’t tried yet any Angelos Créations Olfactives fragrances but i am excited for this giveaway. I’m in Romania, EU.

  • Thanks Neringa for the review and introducing a new scent by Aggelos Balamis ( First heard of him when the Cafleurebon list of best of 2020 was out). I love carnation (clavel, in spanish, is very popular flower here) but I don´t have any perfume with this note. So I am intrigued by Aggelos carnation solliflore and to know that this note was one of the first interests in his perfumery lessons. Œillet sounds great with this throwback to old world glamour: love the top notes carnation and pink pepper and the subsequent and illuminating tuberose and heliotrope. The comforting drydown with musk, leather and vanilla : the orchestra plays in our skin. Never smelled any Aggelos´ creations: it is time to do it. I live in Spain, EU

  • I wonder why carnation retains thi ‘vintage’ reputation? The flower itself smells divine. Are there any other contemporart carnation perfumes?
    I’m in EU

  • Lovely review! The old world opulence & glamour are so appealing. “Vibrant, facetted, at once nocturnal and solar” – what a delectable description. This perfume calls to mind the deep color & rich black fruit of a Montepulciano or Nero d’Avola, wines that exude the spicy petals of geranium as they breathe. I can see these Belle Époque Grandes Dames dancing through the dry down. I would love to sample this scent! Thank you for the opportunity! Thank you for the discovery of Angelos Balamis (Facebook saved)! I live in the USA

  • Oh, oh, combination of florals and spices, with vanilla, leather and musk in the musk sounds EXQUISITE! I have heard of Angelos Créations Olfactives, but never had the chance of smelling any of their creations! I live in Croatia, EU.

  • Rachel Part 2
I helped my mother plant geraniums today (on the mind). The wines breathe carnation. ❤️

Top Notes: Pink Pepper CO2, Lily of the Valley, Carnation; Heart Notes: Tuberose Absolute, Rose, Heliotrope, Ylang-Ylang, Clove Bud; Base Notes: Vanilla, Musk A house that I am not familiar but intrigued by the perfumer and notes especially clove, rose and musk. A beautiful description by Neringa highlights the mystique and aura of this house and the perfumer who exudes humbleness and a sheer breath of fresh air. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

A house that I has been on my radar but I hope to try Yassemi as soon as possible. I am fascinated by the notes especially Tuberose, rose, musk and vanilla. I agree an absolute gentleman who deserves everything he gets. Thanks a lot from the UK

I liked it when its goes on dry down with vanilla and musk. I never smelled Angelos fragrance but I am sure I will. I am in Sweden EU

  • What an interesting person. I am finding myself want8ng to know more about his perfume house. Thanks for a chance to win. In maryland.

  • macaroni023 says:

I am already dreaming how wonderful it would be to wrap myself in this majestic smell. Very beautiful pafume review! Thank you for the draw, I’m from EU

  • I enjoyed this review and love how the beginning experience of the perfume is fresh florals of carnation and rose but ends with the richness of musk, leather and vanilla.
I have never tried any fragrances from this perfume house before, nor had I even heard of the line. Thank you for such a wonderful article about this scent and introducing me to this line.
    I live in the USA.

  • I have been dreaming of a carnation scent lately. Œillet sounds perfect! I am definitely going to try it. I haven’t tried any other Aggelos Balamis scents. I am in the US.

  • I am looking forward to discover “a carnation blooming before suddenly bursting into layers upon layers”. I am also interested to see how tuberose is pictured in this elegant composition. Thank you, Neringa for this review and thank you also, Aggelos Balamis, for the generosity!

My favorite carnation so far is Oeillet Sauvage.

    I am living in Europe.

  • I love Œillet! The carnation in it is so incredibly rich!! I have many favorites in his current line but the two I love the most are Grâce d’Orient and Tabac Libre!! I haven’t bought a bottle of Œillet yet so I would be extremely happy if I won!

I am in Athens , Greece

  • I admire young and bold creators , their olfactory mark is worthy to be known and loved, also a strong character and spicy warm carnation parfume as this one may ignite our senses! From Romania with love!

  • The drydown and described complexity seems like they would be perfect – I haven’t tried any of his creations and would love to start with this one! I’m in NC USA.

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

What a wonderful tuberose! When I see a tuberose I am crushed and I want to smell it and know how it is! I love tuberose. I am from Eu Bucharest Romania Europe

  • Angelos Créations Olfactives Œillet seems to be a classic, old world, heady perfume that I’d like to try. Neringa’s review is very clear in describing the scent. Lovely notes, beautiful bottle – what’s not to like here. I haven’t had the pleasure of trying out Angelos Créations Olfactives perfumes, yet. Thanks for the draw and review. I am in the USA.

  • GennyLeigh says:

I love carnation and believe it’s an underutilized note in modern perfumery. The comparison with Caron Poivre has me intrigued. I’ve never tried anything from Angelos Creations Olfactives before. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • Bryant Worley says:

What strikes me is that which makes me anticipate getting my nose on this fragrance, and it’s this: “Angelos Créations Olfactives Œillet opens with the piquant, heated breath of a carnation blooming before suddenly bursting into layers upon layers of fiery petals spiked with spicy cloves and pink pepper.”

I’ve never tried an Olfactive, but according to the notes, my ‘favorite’ would be Tabac Libre.

I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • Mary ter Heege says:

I have the sample set and l’oeillet is my favorite. It’s spicy and has a beautiful drydown on my skin. I already had the oeillet sauvage by l’artisan but Angelos creation is the winner. I would love to have a bottle of this beauty☺️ I live in the Netherlands

  • lilacdays says:

I’m crazy about carnation scents, so this one really speaks to me.
It seems like a beautiful soliflore and I really enjoyed that Neringa compared it to Waltz-themed painting. So far I have never had the pleasure of trying out any of Balamis creations, but I can’t wait.
Many thanks for this drwa. I live in Paris

  • This review had this carnation lover at “carnation” and “spicy”. I’ve read great things about Aggelos’s creations, and hope to try them some day.

  • Sherin Thomas says:

In my opinion Œillet is appleaing. I don’t have own any carnation dominant fragrances, but I really appreciate this note and I would really love to try this perfume. I like how well composed this fragrance sounds and I like that it has dark contrast in the bottom notes to contradict the brightness of the top. I never tried anything from Aggelos Balamis. I look forward to trying his work and discovering his next creations. I’m from PA, US.

  • Sarah Lathrop says:

I love the scent of carnations/dianthus and would love to try this perfume. I think it sounds intriguing because the description leads me to believe that it’s at once spicy and creamy. I have not sampled anything from this line, so I don’t have a favorite. I live in the U. S. in Connecticut. Thank you for the chance to win such a lovely prize!

  • I’ve always loved carnations as a cut flower for their looks but not so much for their smell because it was always spicy sharp to me. However after reading this review I think it’s about high time I try it in a perfume, especially this one! I think the pink pepper is a great choice for the spiciness but the richness of all the other florals make me swoon. I’ve never tried anything from this house before so I don’t have a favorite. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Claumarchini says:

I am really intrigued by Œillet as I do not own fragrances in which carnation is the dominant note, and from the review this sounds like an amazing fragrance. I have read about Angelos on Cafleurebon and have been dying to try one of his fragrances so I would love to be the lucky winner! Greetings from Italy

  • wandering_nose says:

Œillet sounds so classy, opulent and captivating that I was instantly sold on it. It seems complex, multifaceted, like Neringa describes it – at once nocturnal and solar. The notes are daring and outspoken and I would love to try this beauty. Haven’t had the chance to try any of the Angelos Créations Olfactives fragrances but am adding the house to my to-try list. Thank you from Ireland, EU

  • I’ve certainly heard of perfumer Aggelos Balamis, but I haven’t gotten to try any of his fragrance releases yet. I want to try this fragrance. I found the part of the review to be interesting where Aggelos talks about how he was fond of the use of carnation in perfumery and wanted to make a carnation soliflore towards the beginning of his time as a perfumer. I personally like the use of carnation in perfumery, and this fragrance sounds like it is one of the best carnation-centric fragrances ever made. From what I’ve heard about Aggelos’ style, as a perfumer, I get the impression that I would like his work. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • Angelos creations Olfactive has been on my radar to try, and this carnation sounds like an excellent place to start. I have very few carnation dominate scents but this sounds so opulent and beautiful it would be a pleasure to try it. Thank you for the giveaway. Commenting from NY.

  • I’ve heard the perfumer call this a soliflore but it sounds like so much more than that. I have never tried this house before but I can’t wait for him to have a website–I’d love to buy a sample set. I’m in the US and it is wonderful to hear about a perfumer who seems to love and be inspired by vintage fragrances and isn’t afraid to embrace that style.

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

Sounds lovely. Carnation and clove is such a gorgeous combination to me. I haven’t been lucky enough yet to sample any others of this perfumer’s creations, but this carnation perfume sounds beautiful! I’m in California, USA.

  • DespinaVnt says:

Neringa gave us a bewitching review of a perfume that sounds so much more than a carnation soliflore. The surprises that the base of the fragrance holds capture my imagination, and so does the rich Carnation itself, a note I miss so much in contemporary compositions. I’d love to win Œillet, thank you !
I’m a fan of Aggelos’s creations, I already have singled out some great favorites among his collection, most notably Eau de Vertu.
    Best from France (EU)

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Love the imagery of the flowers waltzing to the musk, vanilla and leather. I don’t have any carnation centered fragrances in my collection. This sounds lovely and I really love the idea of the spicy note. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thank you for the beautiful review Neringa.

I’ve been intersted in the perfumer ever since Cafleurbon featured him a while back.

Carnation is a note that has been used in fragrances as popular as Habit Rouge and Old Spice and is a difficult one to master, especially in the presence of tuberose.

I would love to get my nose on this to experience the brilliance of this perfumer.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Michael Prince says:

What strikes me about Œillet is the beautiful contrast of fresh floral notes and spicy traversing though a musky, leathery, and vanilla experience. I haven’t tried anything from Angelos Créations Olfactives so I don’t have a favorite. I am from the USA.
