Amouage Meander Review (Mackenzie Reilly) 2020 + Wandering in Lush Green Draw

Across a deep green valley, the fog rolls silently across the rushy forest floor, obscuring the sun and the path you travelled but ten minutes ago. Before are hills that undulate in an eternal rhythm of rain patter and leaf stir, the wild calls of birds and the rush of water somewhere nearby. Amouage Meander, part of the new Renaissance Collection, evokes the lush green plains surrounding the Omani city of Salalah during monsoon season, when the arid desert air is finally soothed, becoming thick with the wet smell of vegetation and rain spattered leaf, of clouds of mist hanging heavy and low, of muddy ground and the sun gleams weakly through its gauzy veil.

Meander is to wander, but this poetic word also describes the bends and twists of a river, and in Amouage’s fragrance, the smell of wetness is always close IFF perfumer Mackenzie Reilly’s composition. Reilly describes how she used both the resin and oil of the Boswellia tree (and also known as frankincense) in tandem with vetiver and balsamic, smoky cypriol to evoke the sense of brume: “I chose to paint a contradiction between lush green vegetal notes and warm dry desert dust: fog and smoke; real and unreal. Two different qualities of olibanum, an oil and a resinoid, lend the precious incense signature the fragrance carries throughout its development.”

The principal aromas of vegetation and incense move out swiftly but fluidly and then draw slowly back, like a cast fishing line. As the minutes pass, other notes peek through; pungent black, and fruity pink, pepper; orris, chilly and papery, and an intensely nutty note. They announce themselves and then each gradually recedes. As time goes on, I sense of pattern of movement in Meander which befits its name: incense, water and vegetation move in and out of each other as if finding their way along different paths before returning to each other.

amouage Meander review

Salalah, Oman, image via Daily Mail

Where its beginning brings an imagined aroma of brume, Meander’s middle summons realistic smell of fallen rain in the forest: thick leaves speckled with droplets, rooty, fresh-pulled carrot, damp tree bark, wet tree nuts. As these notes filter out through each other sandalwood emerges and begins to dominate the fragrance, lending its characteristic mellow creaminess and joining with the black pepper and vetiver to enhance the Meander’s woody center. As it amplifies, the sandalwood whirls around the incense and smoky-rooty notes in a slowed-down hora, billowing out then folding in. The interplay between incense, vegetation and sandalwood continues throughout the rest of Meander’s development until the sandalwood takes charge and the vetiver-cypriol accord and olibanum move back.

In its dry-down, Meander settles chiefly into sandalwood and vetiver. But still, water is everywhere.  Deep in the verdant overgrowth, a water spirit laughs as it flows over the rocks and roots that break its fall, and morning fog cloaks the grasses and flowers that push through new soil. Meander’s plants and woods linger in their smudgy grey-green weald, and the sun just begins to cut the haze.

Notes: Olibanum Oil, Carrot Heart, Pink Pepper CO², Black Pepper Oil, Orris, Rose Absolute, Cypriol, Jonquille Absolute, Olibanum Resinoid, Vetiver Oil, Sandalwood Oil.

  • Phew glad I can comment now. I really love Amouage especially Interlude Man. This sounds really different with water and incense.”rain in the forest and thick leaves with incense sounds fantastic.

  • Andrei Artimon says:

Very interesting combination of notes , 1 of my favourite houses , would love to be on the winning end of this one , new york , usa .

  • I like the idea of a fragrance that recalls a winding, meandering river. I am curious to see how the notes and accords come together to convey a sense of water. I really like Amouage Bracken Woman, which to me is like a clean, fluffy cloud of ferns. I am in the DFW area.

  • I certainly have heard of this fragrance and it was interesting to read what Lauryn thinks about it. Based on Lauryn’s review, I want to see what the incense with smoky-rooty notes combination is like. I haven’t had the luxury yet of trying any Amouage fragrances; I’ve heard that, at least, many of them have excellent performance and that is one of the main things that I look for in a fragrance. I live in MD., U.S.A.

I’ve recently tried a few Amouage frags that I absolutely love. I got a bottle of Dia Man and it is stunning. I blind bought a bottle of Jubilation 25 for my partner. She loves it. We bought both based in part on the vetiver note. Which is why I can’t wait to get our noses on Meander. I love a frag that tells a story over time as you wear. Meander sounds like a masterpiece, a carefully crafted watercolor. This line from Lauryn just spelled it out perfectly: “…incense, water and vegetation move in and out of each other as if finding their way along different paths before returning to each other.” I love the idea of a damp, rain-trodden journey. I’m really excited about this one!

  • A hobby I have picked up while in quarantine has been burning resin incense (instead of the stick form I’ve enjoyed for so many years) While doing so I’ve been astounded by how many varieties of frankincense there are, and how their scent can vary greatly. So I definitely believe when you say using both olibanum oil and resinoid created a precious incense signature. (especially with the addition of the other beloved incense ingredient-sandalwood) USA

  • Vegetation, incense, pepper sounds like a great combination, haven’t had a chance to try any Amouage yet but Jubilation XXV is on my to try list.
    California, USA

  • Lovely description of Meander. I especially liked the idea of rain spattered leaves, mist and muddy ground. Sounds just like a walk through the woods after a soaking rainfall. On my wishlist it goes! Mich USA

This sound right up my alley, love green, woody and earthy scents, would love to be entered to win this bottle, awesome review lauryn

  • Amouage Meander is the one I am hearing the most about among Amouage’s latest releases. The review says that Mackenzie strived for a contrast between green vegetal notes and warm dry desert dust; the latter representing the deserts of Oman. My fav. Amouage perfume is Epic for Men. USA.

  • From Lauryn’s review of Amouage Meander, I really liked how the frankincense is combined with the vetiver and cypriol, that seems like a very nice combination. I do not have a favourite Amouage perfume yet because I have never been able to try any of them. I really want to try Interlude Man and Interlude Man Black Iris. I have only heard good things about Amouage. I live in Florida.

  • I love the idea of a contrast between lush, wet vegetation and dry, smoky incense. Looking forward to sampling this one. And the presentation of the bottle is just beautiful – that shade of green! Thank you from Oregon, USA.

  • This sounds nice and grounding, The interplay between dry desert scents and verdant forest is interesting. Meandering among water, vegetation and incense is a great way to experience fragrance. The jonquille and rose absolutes are a lovely floral counterpoint. Favorite Amouage is Woman. Commenting from MD, USA.

  • I had a pleasure of smelling Meander already. I rarely smell the fragrance before reading a review here. I really enjoyed Lauryn’s review. Because I have smelled it, I could really understand all of her descriptions, feelings and thoughts that went into her review. I also could appreciate the notes so much better after reading her review. I feel like she explained what I was smelling better then I could do that myself. I do not have a favorite Amouage fragrance yet, but I know that I find Meander very interesting and different. I don’t think this is a fragrance for everybody, but I definitely like it. I love the carrot heart note and the woody base, with water enveloping you thought the development of this fragrance. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • The images you convey are vivid– wandering through a valley, and the moment the long-dry land gets its downpour. Makes me want to be there, or at least to smell it… I haven’t tried any Amouage scents yet but have read and heard a lot of high praise.

  • Great article as always! I love the house of Amouage. If I had to select my favorite fragrance from Amouage it has to be Interlude Black Iris Man (although the competition is tight).

Meander sounds great. Fragrances like this is what sets high quality niche houses apart from designers. It sounds so interesting and complex, and I cannot wait to try it.

  • Gabriel Garcia says:

Lauryn review is a visual trip to Oman, when the monsoons finally visits and soothes the earth,!
I kinda always liked that, since I’m from the desert, and I have experienced a lot of scents after a long awaited rain.
My favorite amouage is, overture man, and lyric man.
    Nevada USA

  • I love the sound of the earthy green notes combined with both the pink and black pepper. I haven’t tried an Amouage perfume before! Commenting from California.

  • Bryant Worley says:

Lauryn’s review was really detailed. This is what appealed to me: “As time goes on, I sense of pattern of movement in Meander which befits its name: incense, water and vegetation move in and out of each other as if finding their way along different paths before returning to each other.” and ”
As time goes on, I sense of pattern of movement in Meander which befits its name: incense, water and vegetation move in and out of each other as if finding their way along different paths before returning to each other.” The twists and turns, ebb and flow of the fragrance is very attractive.

As for my favorite Amouage, I can’t decide between Reflection 6or Lyric Man.

I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • Thank you Lauryn – I liked the imagery of a water spirit laughing as it flows over rocks and roots 🙂 It sounds like Meander takes one on a journey of discovery. My favorite Amouage fragrance so far is Epic Man. I’m in USA

  • Carlos De La Torre Jr says:

I was lucky enough to get a sample during Scentxplore and I fell in love with it. I love what the carrot brings and the earthy woodiness of it.

My fav Amouage fragrance is Overture man.

  • Incense + water + vegetation… ain’t that wonderful to smell!
My favorite Amouage is Portrayal Woman!
    Happy holidays from WA, USA

  • Meander sounds classy, and no doubt it’s shapeshifting fragrance like all Amouage fragrances I personally know. Such green and woody , roothy experience, with top quality sandalwood…now I’d like to try, and own it.
Jubilation XXV is a staple in my collection . Smells a bit like a mix between BlackBerry crumble traybake and BlackBerry Swirl Muffins with honey butter both with cinnamon. Can’t help it- Pastry Chef in me goes forward ‍. My favorite Amouage .
Appreciate Lauryn review , and the giveaway campaign.

  • My favorite Amouage thus far (because I’m planning to try a lot more – they’re gorgeous!) is Lyric Woman. Meander sounds transportive to a gentle & contemplative place. Amouage, take me away! Thanks so much for all of the draws – they put some fun in my day & it’s sorely needed right now! I’m in the US.

  • The name itself is lovely and leaves a good room for imagination to begin with. I like how this review expanded this into a full vivid imginery journey. (US)

  • I know Mackenzie Reilly , young perfumer with bright future. creative freedom
Unique fragrance with earthy iris , resins, and vetiver. Well hello Meander , why I’ve not smelled you before?
Amouage fragrances are different. In my opinion you should never get any , without sampling first. Some do smell completely different on different people, when sprayed on skin. For example both Sunshine Men , and Reflection Man are two completely different scents on me , and on my husband. Sunshine Men is a gourmand on me , but on my hubby is dry , herbal and sour. You literally can’t tell we’re wearing the same fragrance !
I guess i’ll have to find out myself what I’ll get from Meander . By the way favorite Amouage is Sunshine Men.
    Thanks for the draw

I’ve tried a sample of Meander, and it’s one of my favorite Amouage releases in years. “…a contradiction between lush green vegetal notes and warm dry desert dust: fog and smoke; real and unreal” describes the scent well.

My favorite Amouage scent is Opus III.

I live in Nashville, TN, USA.

  • this perfume sounds wonderful. I’m intrigued to smell what sounds like a more pared down amouage. My favorite Amouage is probably Gold Woman

  • Happy Holidays
About Meander , sophisticated fragrance, with iris and sandalwood in it , of course I’d love to try it. Almost forgot the incense , almost a trademark for the brand.
And it’s Amouage after all, I have experience with their fragrances. Both Journey and Fate Man are the prime examples why you should never judge the book by its cover. Both are spicy, both dry , both openings are kind of harsh. I was looking for spicy fragrance, and it was not an easy task. Both are well made , you can pick up the quality right away.Hesitation was killing me, but Journey and up in my possession. Except Meander i really want to try Overture.
    Exciting giveaway , USA

What an interesting combo of notes with the vegetation and incense, two notes I don’t think I’ve ever experienced together. I’ve only tried a few from Amouage and find this house to be so interesting with such unexpected note combinations. This sounds like a must try. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Favourite from Amouage is still Beach Hut followed by Overture, but this line has sure been getting some talk lately. Lauryn’s description of damp forest aromas take me back to camping this year during a major frontal storm – puddles all over the campsite, a leaky tent, mosquito hell and yet, a feeling of utter calmness and serenity surrounded by cool, ozonic freshness. Digging the sound of the sandalwood and vetiver in the base, along with the characteristic Amouage incense. I’ve always been a fan of woody scents. Very interested to experience how Mackenzie managed that juxtaposition between vegetal aromas and dry desert dust. A talented beauty that one. MI, USA.

  • I love how the vegetation, water and incense wander about then return to be together. This makes me want to go take a hike and breath in some fresh greenery. I love the shade of this bottle, reminds me of some antique dishes my grandmother owned. My favorite from this line is Sunshine Woman. Thanks Euro Perfumes and Lauryn. USA.

  • I love Lauryn’s imagery of dry and wet smells, some decomposed or desicated, others moist, alive and vegetal. This doesn’t sound like a pretty floral fragrance, but rather like a striking stimulus for mental imagery of the natural world, completely unisex. I have not tried any Amouage scents, but would very much like to. I live in the US, in NC.

  • Loved the way Lauryn described Amouage Meander perfume with the way the fragrance change (meanders) over time. The bottle is gorgeous, and the notes (Olibanum Oil, Carrot Heart, Pink Pepper CO², Black Pepper Oil, Orris, Rose Absolute, Cypriol, Jonquille Absolute, Olibanum Resinoid, Vetiver Oil, Sandalwood Oil) are all lovely. Would love to try this as I have never tried an Amouage fragrance. Thanks for the review and the draw. Writing from the USA.

  • Vetiver, balsamic, smoky, resins? Perfumer could be new , but Meander is a fragrance, straight out of Amouage annual book
I wear Amouage fragrances for a long time, but I much prefer men’s versions , despite being a woman. To me Reflection Men > Reflection Women , Lyric Man>Lyric Women and so on.
Own full bottles of Jubilation XXV – 100% unisex fragrance , Journey Woman -the only one on pair with men’s version, and a month back finished my 10ml decant of Lilac Love , and finally bought a bottle.
Thanks Cafleurebon for the time, and effort through the whole year, keep up the great work
    Cheers from VA

  • Lauryn’s review was spot on with the creaminess of the orris and sandalwood, this is a great fragrance that I have sampled. I’d love to win this tester bottle, my favorite Amouage is Reflection Man.

  • The lush verdancy as described is divine. I would love to try this. I do not have a favorite Amouage fragrance. And I live in the US.

  • I think this is my favorite of the four Renaissance collection scents because it is so unique and uses Omani frankincense in a completely new way – a more dewy moist mix instead of the more typical dustiness that seems to go with incense. It is a lovely meditative scent! My favorite Amouage is impossible to narrow down to just one but, I love Memoir Woman, Interlude Man, Gold Woman and Al Mas attar. Thanks to Eden Square and Cafleurebon for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thank you for that beautiful review Lauryn.

Oman is the land of my childhood and I have been to Salalah a few times. Salalah shows the dichotomy of the desert – during the harvest season, the land is lush, thick fogs hangs about, the weather is cool while the rest of the country is burning.

It also lies on the famous frankinscene trail and you can see the trees. Legend has it that the three wise men walked along this trail on their way to visit baby Jesus. Nobody knows the truth, but there was a gift of frankinsence and myrrh that was made.

I love the Amouage Opus series and Jubilation.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Meander sounds really interesting and unique. I like the sound of the incense and rooty notes like orris and carrot as well as sandalwood and am interested in how the composition comes across as water being close by. I havent tried many Amouage fragrances but I really enjoyed and would like to own at some point Reflection Man. Thanks for the generous draw, from CT USA.

  • There is nothing better than the smell of a damp forest in the fog. I love the smell of rain. My favorite Amouage is Dia women, but Bracken women is on my wish list. I’m in New York State.

  • From Lauryn’s review of Amouage Meander, I really liked how the name of Meander really reflects the marriage of the frankincense and vetiver and cypriol, giving off the impression of a lazy river. I do not have a favourite Amouage perfume at the moment but I really want to try this brand, especially Jubilation XXV man. I live in Florida, US.

  • pungent black, and fruity pink, pepper; orris, chilly and papery, and an intensely nutty note. This partial sentence alone is enough to make me want to try it! Iowa, usa!

  • Amouage Meander sounds interesting to me. I love how the element of water, sandalwood, and incense is throughout the scent. My favorite Amouage is Gold Man.
    Florida, USA

  • I’ve had the chance to sample it and it is spot on what Lauryn has described in her imaginative review.
    New York, USA.

  • This is an interesting fragrance. I’d like the chance to try it out and the other new release by Amouage. Don’t have a favorite Amouage yet but I like Lyric Man and surprisingly Interlude Man. Thanks, Ca

  • Merry Christmas everyone 🙂
I’ve sampled all new Amouage fragrances, and
Lauryn imo described Meander very well. The only thing I could add, is the rose. Not a dominant note, still I can get it through the whole life of the fragrance.
At the moment i do own 4 Amouage fragrances – Jubilation XXV for men – the best Amouage imo , Intelude Man also known as “The Blue Beast” , Lilac Love and Blossom Love .

Beautifully described. I appreciate the way the path of development is written. My favorite is Lyric woman. Such a special house Amouage. Virginia, USA

  • Merry Christmas Cafleurebon
The whole Renaissance Collection is getting a lot of positive attention on Cafleurebon, and on YouTube.
Incense and sandalwood, vetiver and different types of spices , on top of earthy iris. Meander is right up my alley fragrance. I also think it would lean masculine.
Every time I’m thinking about Amouage, I’m thinking about Interlude Man . Stunning fragrance.Happy to own it , one of the best , if not the best ever created in the incense category . Finished 3 bottles during the years , and on my 4th i already made a dent on it .
Nice giveaway, thanks a lot to both Lauryn , and Europerfumes.

  • What interests me most is how the development of the scent matches the name , and a scent with so many different twists and turns is always a joy to discover.

    Florida, USA

  • I always love frankincense in perfume but lately I’ve been attracted to the dryness of vetiver, so that addition to Meander has me interested. I would love to try this one. Thanks for the review! USA

  • This sounds intriguing! It has so many notes I’m not familiar with and I don’t know the Amouage house, but I love the idea of a scent that reminds me of talking a nice walk through nature, which is something I probably won’t get to do for awhile, here in NYC!

  • I really appreciate the creativity of Amouage scents. Meander sounds no different. Would love to know how the vegetation combines with Incense resinous notes. I enjoy green scents so can’t wait to get my nose on Meander. Thanks for the giveaway Based in the US

  • From Lauryn’s review of Amouage Meander, what really appealed to me was how the frankincense is combined with the other ingredients to evoke the feeling of being by a river. I do not yet have a favourite Amouage perfume because they are unavailable in stores near me to try. I live in Florida, in the US.

  • Incense + vegetation sounds very intriguing. I’ve never sniffed an Amouage fragrance before, so I can’t have a favorite. Thanks for the draw! I’m in Oklahoma, USA

  • Fresh pulled carrot and wet bark along with sandalwood & vetiver sounds both unique and lush. Reading this review had me picturing a really green and magical forest.

  • I live in Seattle, WA and based on Lauren’s review it sounds like a fresh, rainy day here. The combination of the watery notes and the incense and sandalwood sound lovely. I have never smelled anything from the house and would love to try it out! Thank you

  • I enjoy the word “meander.” I definitely get an image of a river from this word. I love the notes in the fragrance that call to mind water, vegetation, movement. The carrot and olibanum notes sound very much like the forest which surrounds the river. I love Epic Man from Amouage.
    I live in the USA.

  • This review brings me deep in to the rituals of incense, frankincense and sandalwood both being my most used incenses. It takes me deep into nature and imaginary world where everything exist. Making me want to connect further with the creation.

  • The idea of a relaxing scent based on a meandering river is quite appealing. I don’t think I have a favorite Amouage perfume yet. I live in the USA.

  • What appeals me the most of Amouage’s Meander is the incense, vegetation and the sandalwood notes that go back and forth during the life of the fragrance. I think that combination depicts the monsoon season of Salalah perfectly.
In the other hand, my favorite Amouage fragrance up to this day is Overture Man.

  • I always love Amouage but this one sounds different and interesting to me. Wet green forest smell with some notes that I love: orris, pink pepper, resin, vetiver and sandalwood. I am also interested in the Enclave too. Hopefully I can win this once so I can buy Enclave myself if I already have this. I never win a giveaway. Just keep my fingers crossed. I live in California, USA

  • Michael Prince says:

Amouage Meander sounds like a beautiful green and earthy fragrance that was described so beautifully in detail by Lauryn. My favorite Amouage Perfume is Interlude Man. I am from the USA.

  • Curious about the vegetal greenery and the carrot seed, those are new to my nose. Sounds interesting from what I’m accustomed to with fragrance.
