Art and award and Olfaction award-winning artisanal perfumer Amber Jobin of Aether Arts Perfume has been a true original from the start of her career. She is known for her inimitable voice and singular means of expression: put succinctly, Amber views the universe from a different perspective than many – perpetually inquisitive, deep-thinking and highly experimental. These endearing qualities, combined with a heightened sense of playfulness – cause me to look forward eagerly to whatever new concept she’s engaged. It stands to reason that the Burning Man Festival is an ongoing source of inspiration for her (and like-minded artists of all sorts). After a two-year hiatus necessitated by the pandemic, Burning Man returned this year with the theme Waking Dreams.

I can’t imagine a single artist who wouldn’t succumb willingly to such a motif. Amber responded by creating Aether Arts Perfume Lucid Synesthetic Dreaming – an explosively joyful scent which is equal parts fantasy, fruit, flower and color.

“Color sky, havana lake
Color sky, rose carmethene
Alizarin crimson
Wear your love like heaven

Lord, kiss me once more
Fill me with song
Allah, kiss me once more
That I may, that I may
Wear my love like heaven” ~ Donovan Leitch, Wear Your Love Like Heaven

Buddha Moon (Monk Sunrise) 1999 Peter Max wikiart

The electric hues of Amber’s olfactory palette read as Elements Under the Influence – the pop of oscillating oranges, sparkly berry tones, a tinge of acid green amongst them. To the nose, they are interpreted as riotous, juicy color which skews melodic in the vein of a Donovan Leitch (a Celtic bard who personified peace and love in the late 60s and 70s). The perfumer’s use of aromatic color in Aether Arts Perfume Lucid Synesthetic Dreaming is vivid as a Peter Max painting and just as exuberant.

Doldrums disappear in a spiral of tropical fruits which possess a sunny tartness: pineapple, kumquat, mango and guava cavort with a berry accord. The floral and green accords feel of a piece, closely interwoven with one another; there is a slight bitterness which feels like the pith of a citrus peel and is oddly attractive. Lucid Synesthetic Dreaming is filled with such twists, underscored with a jovial fruity musk which whimsically anchors the composition.

After a prolonged period of isolation, turning inwards and altering how we communicate, Aether Arts Lucid Synesthetic Dreaming encourages us to embrace a lighthearted buoyancy, to play and open ourselves to new adventures.

Notes: kumquat, orange sunshine accord, guava, mango, pineapple, berry accord, green, floral, fruity musk accord

  • The unique, fascinating and absolutely beautiful notes of Lucid Synesthetic Dreaming strike me. This scent must be something fabulous. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • Ida!! ❤️❤️❤️ What a wonderful review!! I Adore Aether Arts! Their scents are always an intellectual and sensual journey well worth taking! Lucid Synesthetic Dreaming sounds wonderful: sunshine & hope during these cold times! I could sure use some warmth right now! Bright electric colors, yes please! We always look forward to new Amber Jobin fragrances in this house! Thank you for the opportunity! ❤️ USA

  • I have no idea what to expect from this perfume, orange sunshine accord sounds bizarre and psychedelic. Lucid Synesthetic Dreaming, the shape and colours of scents as the perfumer experiences them. Perhaps a glimpse into the mind of a synesthetic composer, could be glorious, could be challenging. In perfumery, all experiences are welcome. Canada

  • Wow, the colours of the illustrations of the review just exploded in my very very grey morning of the first day of meteorological winter. And the perfume itself sounds just like another explosion of colours, notes, feelings.

I’m interested in trying this fragrance for multiple reasons, e.g. I’ve never tried anything yet from Amber Jobin, and because she’s an award winning artisan perfumer. Also, I’m interested in trying the tropical fruits and the floral and green accords. I live in the U.S.A.

  • Ida’s words “Aether Arts Perfume Lucid Synesthetic Dreaming – an explosively joyful scent which is equal parts fantasy, fruit, flower and color” make me want to check it out, especially as I have never tried this brand and also because of the many awards Amber has won. Common notes, but I am curious how they are blended to make an exquisite perfume. From USA.

  • Well, I am old enough to remember Donovan, and would love to smell a fragrance that reminds me of those carefree days!
I love the idea of a ‘spiral of tropical fruits which possess a sunny tartness’.
I enjoy fruity fragrances, but they can skew too sweet. I like my fruit with a bit of pucker!
Thank you for this delightful review and drawing.
    I live in the US.

Thanks for the fun review, Ida.

I loved the Peter Max Buddha Moon image. I looked him up and all his pictures have an interesting tropical, video game and fantastical quality.

Much like this fragrance with it’s wonderful mix of eclectice fruity, juicy, bitter, dry, green and herbal notes.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Great review Ida! I always loved Wear my love like heaven by Donovan and I always wished I was able to accomplish lucid dreaming. Alas, I never could. Aether Arts Lucid Synesthetic Dreaming seems like a vivid, psychedelic ride and super fun. Would love to try it. MD, USA.

  • Lucid Synesthetic Dreaming seems like something out of this world. It is amazing that once in a while, perfumers create something so provocative and artistic and not just something that wants to be on the market for sales.
I love the notes and the top notch materials they use here. I hope to win this review so I can taste this amazing fragrance.

  • I’ve always been interested in synesthesia and reading about people’s experiences, especially in the perfume realm. That and combined with the Burning man idea, I’m really curious in Lucid Synesthetic Dreaming. I live in the EU.

  • Oh my gosh this review was wonderful and this perfume sounds so striking and fun. I’d love to smell it. I live in Missouri, USA.

  • What I loved most about Ida’s review was how it transported me to a warm, tropical yet nostalgic place that I have never even been to. The notes of pineapple, guava and kumquat and the hues of orange and green just promise the sunniest, most electrifying olfactive experience. A much welcome voyage of the mind in these cold gray winter days…

    Thanks!

  • I’ve had a few of Amber Jobin’s perfumes on my to-try list for ages; I appreciate the unexpected notes and globetrotting themes in the Aether Arts catalog. The psychedelic palette, tart, tropical fruits, and acid green notes of Lucid Synesthetic Dreaming sound like a riot, and one that will come in handy on gray, cold, dreary winter days. That’s when I need some vivid “aromatic color”. What a fun concept for a perfume! Thanks for the thoughtful review, Ida.

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

  • I’ve often thought of the concept of Synesthesia but it is not something that I personally experience, but I find it fascinating imagining what it would be like for somebody who does have it. I think perfumes are probably the closest in their ability to trigger intense scent memories and awareness. This one sounds happy and fun, which is welcome as a reprieve as late fall and winter start to settle in. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

Fantastic review Ida! What strikes me about Aether Arts Perfume Lucid Synesthetic Dreaming based on Ida’s review is her description of it as “an explosively joyful scent which is equal parts fantasy, fruit, flower and color.” As someone who considers themself a big dreamer in terms of goals and who has always had very intense vivid dreams at night as well, the idea of lucid dreaming has always fascinated me. It seems very fitting to me that a scent about lucid dreaming would be full of fantasy but also joy and exuberance, not dark or looming at all. The pop of oranges, bright sparkly berry tones, and acid greeness Ida describes sounds intense and vivid but full of happiness and life – perfect for a lucid daydream after a long period of isolation. I live in the US.
