4160Tuesdays Clouds and Clouds’ Illusions (Sarah McCartney) Review + Both Sides Now Draw

4160Tuesdays Clouds and Clouds illusion review

“It’s clouds’ illusions I recall; I really don’t know clouds at all…” ~ Joni Mitchell, Both Sides Now

Sarah McCartney of 4160 Tuesdays

Sarah McCartney of 4160Tuesdays in 1967

4160Tuesdays Clouds was an idea dreamed up by Christi Long. It crossed her mind that Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now would be a wonderful inspiration for a fragrance, looking at clouds from sides, the grey, then the sunshine. Between us, we dreamed up a plan: Christi sent me a list of notes: iris, narcissus, white chocolate, hay, sandalwood, papyrus, vanilla and others which I’ll keep secret. She’d named some of the most expensive materials that exist, but I also knew that would want it to be affordable to everyone in the group because she’s nice like that. So I had a suggestion. How about we do Both Sides Now? I am going to make two versions, one with the natural materials and one with the synthetic recreations made by the genius chemists from the industry. That way we can make the most magnificent, fabulously luxurious fragrance this side of Ancient Rome, plus the affordable one. 4160Tuesdays Clouds and Clouds’ Illusions.” ~ Sarah McCartney. So the tale unfolds, my friends. Did I bite the hook? Indeed I did, for a myriad of reasons: there are so many tendrils of personal history involved that I hope I can untangle them all.4160tuesdays Clouds parfum and Clouds' Illusion review

Mariet and me in Enschede 1972 (that’s Drum tobacco, not weed!)

There are many versions of how, when and why the song Both Sides Now came about – but irrefutably, the famous American folksinger Judy Collins recorded it first in 1967 on her well-loved Wildflowers album. Judy’s rendition may have immortalized it and certainly garnered acclaim for Joni’s writing, but Joni wasn’t fond of it (nor am I, despite acknowledging Judy’s substantial musicianship and gifts; her lack of emotion leaves me cold.) and she later recorded it herself. I imagine that I wasn’t all that dissimilar to other broodingly thoughtful pseudo-intellectual teenagers of my era; I adored well-written poetry and only asked that my singers never “phoned it in”. When I sang, I gave it my all (I still do) and authenticity mattered. I played acoustic and 12 string guitar and Both Sides Now was a song I became closely associated with as I hitchhiked (and goulashed) my way throughout Europe with my Limburgse girlfriend Marietje. Mariet even recorded my singing it in Enschede on a reel-to-reel in 1971; we wore the album out with playing. Joni was an idol, right up there with Leonard Cohen and I memorized everything she wrote/sang.

Other reasons for taking the cheese in Christi and Sarah’s mousetrap: in spite of its reference to white chocolate (I crave the mystery of the dark. If I want creamy I’ll ask for it.), their list of suggested notes had the Meister seal of approval. Hay figures prominently in early erotic memory, as does Mysore sandalwood; I’m a fan of iris and narcissus (with the latter, the barnyard-ier, the better), papyrus notes and a woody vanilla. I was reeled in like a wide-mouthed carp, hook-in-cheek. Therefore I did the unthinkable – I blind ordered 4160Tuesdays Clouds and not in the edp, either. I went straight for the motherlode of primarily natural parfum-strength. So much for willpower and budgetary constraints. C’était un fait accompli, nothing to be done but hope for the best. I wasn’t disappointed.

4160Tuesdays Clouds review

Ida’s bottle of 4160Tuesdays Clouds Parfum and sample of Clouds’ Illusions

First things first: BOTH 4160Tuesdays Clouds and Clouds’ Illusions are each gorgeous and very similar, just as Sarah intended. If anything the ‘less spendy one’, as Sarah refers to Clouds’ Illusion – possesses greater longevity, as the parfum lies closer to the flesh and imparts little sillage. I adore the citric fanfare introduction – all that lemon and bergamot convey a sun-illuminated sky which truly sings in the Cloud parfum version. It takes time before they fade into the background and a moodier firmament appears: its hue is more of a cadet blue, paler with greyed nuance. It doesn’t menace but it gives you pause for thought; despite the douceur of coumarinic tonka, hay, the more floral aspect of iris and narcissus –  lurks the insinuated depth of choice sandalwood charmed by oakmoss. Oakmoss (as evidenced in fougère bases) may wax discreetly sylvan and sweet; here it murmurs of penumbra, matters obscured lying in wait for the eventual unveiling. Everything about these fragrances is gentle, wearable and inviting; you can happily wear them anywhere with their fluffy-but-never-insignificant good humor and balance. Sarah and Christi have cooked up yet one more delight.

4160Tuesdays Clouds Parfum: orris butter, vanilla absolute, hay absolute, narcissus absolute, Indian sandalwood essential oil, tonka, oakmoss and more

Clouds’ Illusion Notes: bergamot, lemon, oakmoss and recreation of notes from Clouds includes synthetics

Perfume purchased privately and from my own collection. Brava, Sarah and Christi!  My nose is my own…

  • The description is delightful. The idea to have 2 versions of the same scent is genius. But, my favorite part of the review is the picture of Sarah in her old lab! I would love to try this as I’ve always been a cloud-watcher and work in the Atmospheric Science dept at a University. USA.

  • Interesting concept to release both the expensive natural version and a more affordable synthetic one. Even more impressive in that the latter supposedly smells very close. Sounds like a nice woodsy dusty scent.
I haven’t tried any from the house.
Im in the US. Thanks for the draw

  • Hendrix Wilson says:

I love the fact that she made an affordable version of the fragrance, it seems very rare that a perfumer thinks of that. Clouds’ Illusion EDP would be my choice.

  • The names alone evoke lots of exciting thoughts. I think of a transparent, yet thick and subtle altocumulus cloud of a very pleasing fragrance in the air when I observe the notes. My favorite from the brand is Dark Heart of Old Havana. (Commenting from FL, USA)

  • BostonScentGuy says:

I loved the way Joni Mitchell was evoked as inspiration! I also love the sound of these by Ida’s description–citric freshness supported by warm, earthy, well balanced green-woody-floral notes. I haven’t tried any scents from this line yet. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • Ahh, I remember that song well, singing along expressing my teenage angst and it literally brings tears to my eyes…thanks for the memories, Ida! What a creative start for the scent and an equally inspired idea to create two versions, each appreciated by different people for myriad different reasons. I appreciate the chance to try each of the iterations…thank you to all involved! I am in the US.

  • I actually had seen a YouTube video by Smurfygurly about this pair of perfumes and have been interested since. The concept of the two one using naturals the other synthetics just seems so cool to me and interesting and unique. The notes also sound wonderful. I liked how Ida related this back to another time traveling with her friend and singing the song. I haven’t been able to try any 4160 Tuesdays perfumes but would like to, one off hand I want to try is Maxed Out. I am in the U.S. Thank u to everyone involved for the draw and your generosity.

  • I’m a sucker for vanilla, and I also love the fact that Ida ordered a full size natural Parfum bottle. That is awesome. I really enjoy 4160 Tuesdays and a couple of my favorites are Goddess of Love and Perfume and Captured by Candlelight. Thanks for the giveaway, I’m in the USA.

  • What a great concept! I have often wondered how the same fragrance would smell, if in one version there were mostly naturals and in the other more synthetics. Besides that, the note list sounds just wonderful. I will definitely try to sample them. Thank you so much for the opportunity to win the set. I cant wait to smell them!

  • Clouds seems true to Sarah McCartney’s perfumery style. I esp. enjoy the orris note when its well done in a perfume. My fav. from 4160 Tuesdays is Maxed Out. US

  • smellslikehappiness says:

Absolute heaven. I adore the dreamy, self reflective concept behind Clouds, and the notes are so perfectly aligned with meaning behind the fragrance. Lemon, bergamot, orris, hay, sandalwood and vanilla – how does it get better than that? Sarah is brilliant so I can’t pick just one favorite, but Red Queen and Midnight in the Palace Garden are at the top of my list. Thank you for the draw, live in the US.

  • I love the personal history in Ida’s review! It’s hard to choose a single favorite from 4160 Tuesdays, so I’ll name two: White Queen, and Scenthusiasm. I live in the US. Thanks for doing this!

  • I love it that Ida just went for it and purchased it in the full strength. Way to go Ida!! The notes sound divine!! I would love to try this. I enjoyed seeing the photos of Sarah and Ida from younger days, I can so relate to those clothing styles!! I can completely related to Robert, I also own more 4160 Tuesdays than Guerlain. For winter my favorite 4160 Tuesday are “Over the Chocolate Shop” and “Dark Heart of Old Havana”. For the spring/summer I really enjoyed my bottle of Tyger Tyger which was a benefit for the Big Cat Sanctuary in Florida. USA.

  • What a wonderful idea! Two takes on the same scent and with such wonderful notes! I can’t wait to try this newest one from such a prolific perfumer as Sarah. I love when Ida shares pictures of her younger self and gives us little glimpses of her past. It really goes along with the entire story of the perfume. I enjoy so many of Sarah’s works especially the playful names! Thank you for the draw, I’m in the US.

  • I really enjoyed reading this! The both sides now idea is pretty cool idea. I sang along with Joni many times :).

  • I love Sarah’s perfume creations. I have a couple of bottles, but my favorite is The Dark Heart of Old Havana. I have been debating getting my nose on these two scents but haven’t taken the plunge as of yet. Fingers crossed. 🙂 USA

  • For me it is very interesting that 2 versions of this fragrance has been released; an affordable version of the fragrance is also a good idea, so many people can try it. I never smell any of the house’s fragrance.
    I am from EU.

  • Omg I wanna win soo much! When Ida reviews something I want it even more. Great description and I am the fan of orris myself and would be so so very much delighted to win Clouds. Sarah M. is my queen and I am always very excited when she launches a new perfume and her last collab with Christi on Eau My Soul is my fav from 4160 Tuesdays. Many thanks in advance. I am from Germany, EU

  • Love the idea and the review! Would love to try Cloud Illusion EDP. Haven’t tried anything of this linea before. Living in the EU

  • I very much appreciate the perfumers’ willingness and altruism by releasing a less pricey version of the same fragrance. I also liked the construction of this review, with parallelism between elements from Ida’s personal experience and Clouds. I have unfortunately not experienced any 4160Tuesdays perfumes yet, even though i have been reading lots about them lately. Thanks for the draw! I’m from the EU.

  • What an interesting concept. Clouds illusion and clouds, love Joni Mitchell and her songs. I was like Ida, memorized all of them. Would love to try. USA

  • What I love most about ida’s review was that she also shared Sarahs vision for the perfume as well as what she personally took from it.

So often we appreciate the end result but not the process or what/who made it.

My favourite perfume of Sarahs is maxxed out , with a tied 1st place to over the chocolate shop.

  • The Plum Girl says:

Loved every word of this review! I never ever make blind buys, so when Ida made it…aw! The idea of 2 frags is something only Sarah could come up with! I live in EU.

  • Monica Beaton says:

This song is so incredibly tied to my childhood and to my sister that it still brings a lump to my throat whenever I hear it. Thank you for a beautiful story and review Ida. I have loved almost all of Sarah’s fragrances, if not for me to wear, then for their artistry. I will have to try to find this one locally. I’m off to have a cry now – not eligible for draw – in Aus.

  • I love this idea of having both a natural and synthetic/mixed media version of the same perfume. The name is very appealing to me. Clouds Illusions is a beautiful song. I love that photo of Ida as a young woman. It sounds like Clouds and Clouds Illusions would be my favorite(s) of the 4160 Tuesdays lineup. Thank for the chance to win ! USA

  • The idea of having two versions is great. Unfortunately I have not yet tried any of her scents. I’d like to though! USA

  • I love how Ida always takes us into her past to put a place or experience to her fragrance review. I love orris butter and would be absolutely interested in sampling the 4160Tuesdays Clouds scent. I live in the US

  • Just like the last 4160 Tuesdays review, down to the rabbit hole we go … again 🙂
Powerful citrusy introduction, tonka, iris, sandalwood , and a pinch of white chocolate. Such a beautiful description , I’m intrigued.
Thank you Ida for your vivid review.
My favorites from 4160 Tuesdays are White Queen, and Black Velvet Cafe, $10 I paid for 2.5ml sample of White Queen and $8 for 2.5ml of Black Velvet Coffee from Perfumology , but I need both in 100ml for the colder weather. I’ll get one of the two, but I’m not sure which one yet.
Top giveaway, thank you Ida and 4160 Tuesdays.
    In USA

  • This is the Clouds review that I’ve been waiting to read, thank you Ms. Ida. I am not a powerhouse perfume person, “fluffy-but-never-insignificant” would suit me well. Intriguing also is the “sun-illuminated sky which truly sings” aspect of the synthetic version . Over the past two years, I’ve been following and testing fragrances from 4160s, currently I own Centrepiece and Rhubarb Custard. The balance of my collection is still tilted toward Guerlain but that continues to be subject to change! USA

  • Haven’t had the opportunity to try any fragrances from Sarah. Been hearing good.
This one is interesting and nice that a more affordable one released. Some nice photos as well. Thanks for the draw, Ca

  • Love the review and the personal touch. I didn’t know the inspiration came from a song and I love that Sarah collaborates so well with others and not just perfumers. I watched a video from Wafts from the Loft with Sarah and it made me like her and her creations even more. My favorite aspect of this perfume is that it is made two ways so everyone can enjoy it. Thanks for the giveaway and in the USA.

  • What an original idea to have two versions of the same fragrance, including one with more synthetic notes. I have read much about Sarah M’s creations but haven’t had the chance to try any yet. I would love to win this! Thank you for the opportunity. I live in the USA.

  • I listened to Joni Mitchell quite often. Her music was sweet and folksy. I would love to try this fragrance, thanks for the opportunity! USA

  • What a perfect idea – two versions. Comparison is always a fun and Noble endeavor. My Both Sides Now memory is from Mad Men! My favorite part of your review is that beautiful photo from 1972 – frameable art! I live in the USA.

  • What a charming story about two sister scents. I would love to sample both versions, just to smell the difference. Is there real oakmoss in the clouds perfume?
    I live in Germany

  • I love Joni! I also love Judy too but Joni’s version(s) of Both Sides Now is the best. I really like the idea of the companion scent. I would be interested to see how closely the less expensive version mirrors the more expensive one. I live in the US

  • What appealed to me was honestly, Christi Long. She is a friend of mine from high school-many moons ago. Although its been many years since I’ve seen Christi, I do know that she loves perfume and fragrances. I’m not sure if Christi is aware but we share that love. I’m am intrigued by Christi’s involvement in the birth of this fragrance and excited for her. But it doesn’t surprise me, I know Christi to be a go getter and a dream chaser and now a deam maker! I can’t wait to have a bottle myself ❤️

  • Great reading. Sadly i’ve never had the chance to try any 4160Tuesdays fragrance yet, but i’ve heard a lot of nice things about them. Thanks for this wonderful giveaway and chance, i’m in the EU.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I love so much the idea of being able to compare natural and synthetic of the same fragrance! What a brilliant idea.I love everything about this from the concept to the notes. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • “Everything about these fragrances is gentle, wearable and inviting” – loved this description.
My current favourites by Sarah are Be Careful What You Wish For, Paris 1948 and Rosa Ribes.

  • White chocolate with notes such as hay and narcissus? Sounds interesting. I know this house has a huge quantity of releases but i have never tried them. Thanks for the chance! from EU.

  • I have never had a chance to try anything from 4160Tuesdays , but I always wanted to. Maybe this time I will be lucky enough to win. Nice review! Thank you for the chance. I live in the EU.

  • Isn’t it exhilarating when you make a blind buy and it turns out amazing?!! I really do love the description of the edp. I love woody vanilla type scents.
    I live in the US.

  • I love the idea of having two different variations of a fragrance, it’s like playing two different instruments! Sarah is rather prolific so I can’t believe I haven’t tried anything from the line before so no favorite yet. I live in the USA. Thanks!

  • Thank you for the story and review. Very interesting concept. I would love to have both versions, just to compare them. I have not tried any 4160Tuesdays perfumes yet. I am from Romania.

  • These fragrances sound delectable. I love white chocolate and didn’t quite imagine the note in a fragrance and I’d love to try Clouds out:). I’m in TX USA

  • I have heard a lot of good things about this fragrance (actually, about two versions of it). This review confirms it.
When thinking about clouds orris butter seems to be a natural choice.
I don’t have to mention that I would love to win, right?
    I am from Poland.

  • Loved the references to Joni Mitchell. I don’t remember the Judy Collins rendition. Its a very interesting concept to make similar fragrances in different ways. Who would have thought? I don’t have a favorite 4160 Tuesdays a was said that there are just so many. Thanks for a great review and a generous draw. I’m in the USA.

  • What a generous draw! Some lucky someone will get to smell all renditions! I love Judy Collins, and that song, and I’m interested to see how it translates to perfume, I have heard such wonderfully good things about how creative 4160Tuesdays is, but have never had a chance to try them. I hope I get lucky this time around! Thank you for telling us all about these… I think I’m off to listen to some Judy Collins…
I’m in the USA. Thanks again!

  • Excellent review, written with such enthusiasm and passion. I never had the opportunity to try any perfume from Sarah. I live in EU

  • Orris and white chocolate sounds delicious! I olways prefere natural over synthetic but, as it was written in the article, synthetics usually stays longer on a skin.Would love to compare them.I don’t know anything from this brand. I am from EU (Poland)

  • Ida, you had me with this statement. “It doesn’t menace but it gives you pause for thought; despite the douceur of coumarinic tonka, hay, the more floral aspect of iris and narcissus – lurks the insinuated depth of choice sandalwood charmed by oakmoss. ” Sounds like another masterpiece that must be added to my collection, don’t you think?

  • I love the concept of these two as well as your description of how this idea came together! I saw her talk about this on Wafts from the Loft (YouTube), but didn’t get the backstory. I’ve never sampled any of her fragrances yet. Where have I been? I’m in the USA.

  • Beautiful personal story and very interesting information about the perfumer and the vision of the perfume and those different versions.

I don’t know any of this houses perfumes, sad but true.

  • I have all of Joni Mitchell’s vinyl albums. I always felt you were getting art from the music and from the album itself, since Joni painted most of the album covers. Clouds is my second favourite after Blue. I am so intrigued by the hay note. I love Ida’s words: “hay figures prominently in an early erotic memory.”
    I haven’t tried any of Sarah’s perfumes.
    I live in the USA.

  • It was so thoughtful of Sarah to create two versions. I had to laugh when I read how Ida blind bought the parfum strength. I’ve definitely been there, when you are so certain you will love a fragrance, you just have to have it. I have only tried The Sexiest Scent on the Planet. Ever. IMHO. from the line, but I am certain I would love Rhubarb & Custard and Eau My Soul. The great thing about 4160 Tuesdays is that there are so many fragrances, you’re bound to love one of them.

I would love to try these amazing creations. Thank you for the draw! I’m in Canada.

  • Thanks for this lovely review, Ida! I love that two versions of the same perfume were created. This gives the masses options to experience her fragrances. I’m interested and excited to smell Clouds and Clouds’ Illusions- I’m sure Sarah and Christi were successful in these creations. I love the back story of Joni Mitchell, so love her! I haven’t sampled any 4160Tuesdays yet so thanks for this draw.- CA, USA

  • I love the description of 4160Tuesdays and I’m glad another cheaper /more affordable version was created. I think I prefer Clouds’ Illusion because of the longevity.
    I live in USA.

  • Very nice idea to realease both versions of the fragrance. I have never tried 4160Tuesdays fragrance releases, but i would be more than excited to do it. Thanks for the draw! (EU)

  • I totally agree with your assessment of the two renditions of Both Sides Now. Joni Mitchell’s album was played non stop on my little record player, along with Carole King and Crosby Stills Nash. I can’t remember what I did yesterday but I could probably quote the words to all the songs on Joni’s album, and such beautiful words they were. The perfume sounds lovely and I am sadly not as familiar with Sarah’s perfumes as I’d like to be. Thanks for the review.

  • Reading Ida Meister wonderful review now I imagine myself being at some wedding, with a lot of green trees, and me eating white chocolate wedding cake 😉
Of course I do agree with Ida about dark chocolate being better than white chocolate. White chocolate is not a real chocolate. It should contain only cocoa butter, milk and sugar, but most nowadays do contain high doses of vegetable oils. Pastry Chef in the house .
White Queen I had a chance to smell it when I was at Perfumology last year buying something else. Beautiful hazelnut creamy and resinous gourmand .
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign
    East coast USA

  • I liked how Ida described how the Clouds’ Illusion version evolves and has depth even if it is the less spendy version. I haven’t tried any 4160Tuesdays fragrances so I don’t have a favorite yet. I live in the US.

  • To be honest i had to Google Joni Mitchell and Both Sides Now . The inspiration behind Clouds I know nothing about.
When I think about 4160 Tuesdays one particular fragrance comes to mind called ‘Over The Chocolate Shop” . One of the best gourmand fragrances , and maybe the best chocolate fragrance I’ve smelled. I get tobacco too . Super underrated fragrance.
I have a feeling Sarah McCartney nailed it with the different versions of Clouds. Such a nice idea.
A bottle of Clouds Illusions will be nice pair to my bottle of “Over The Chocolate Shop” haha
Thanks Ida and Cafleurebon for the chance

  • Some call it “fake” or plastic , but I’m really drawn to scents containing white chocolate note , even slightest traces of it. Coromandel Channel and Coco Blanc are two fragrances I adore.
Gentle, wearable and fluffy, but with good longevity. Just like the two I’ve mentioned I expect Clouds to be fantastic smelling close encounters kind of fragrance.
“Captured by Candlelight” is my hidden gem , no one knows about. One of those “I don’t want you to know what I’m wearing”.
It’s a gift I received for my birthday, I don’t know the price, or if it’s even available in US .
    Thank you for the generosity.
USA most of the year, and Germany from time to time

  • I really enjoyed Ida’s descriptions of both fragrances and enjoyed reading about what inspired this fragrance! Making the Clouds Illusion more affordable was genius and the fact they are so similar makes me even more excited. I am new to 4160 Tuesdays and everything that I have tried has been above reproach. If I were lucky enough to win, my choice would be the 9ml travel size of 4160Tuesdays Clouds EDP. Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the US!

  • I really like the idea behind Clouds – citrusy opening , green dry down mellowed with creamy vanillic undertone.Beyond interesting.
4160 Tuesdays fragrances in my collection are Eau My Soul and Maxed Out – collaboration with Maximilian Heusler , old-school YouTube fragrance reviewer. I do own the original Maxed Out , because I’ve heard the formula was changed , and the cumin was toned down significantly.
    All @cafleurebon @idameister @4160tuesdaysperfume @sarahmccartneythinks i already follow on Instagram.
    Thanks

  • Love the notes – should be a great non offensive all year round fragrance . Not familiar with Clouds for now , but i do expect high quality fragrance. From the 4160 brand i do own 30ml bottles of Eau My Soul and Silk, Lace & Chocolate , and 50ml of Red Queen .
“Sr. Editor Robert Herrmann once quipped I own more 4160Tuesdays than Guerlains –Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief ”
I do too , but Guerlain i’m not a fan of , at all .
Back and forth between USA and Scotland.1 week in US -> 1 week in Scotland and so on.Basically both US and EU/UK at the same time

  • This sounds absolutely divine. I’ve seen such constant rave reviews of Sarah’s work both here and at the Eau My Soul group on Facebook, and I’m quite ashamed to say I have yet to try any of her offerings! This is a lovely post, and I really appreciated all the photos from yester-year! Thanks for the most generous draw.
