10 Best Perfumes of 2022 Rachel Watson and Hernando Courtright

Now that you have heard from Ermano and me, (our10 Best Perfumes of 2022 ) and (The Best Fragrances of 2022 here), Ida and Lauryn, Emmanuelle and Nicoleta, Karl and Michael we continue our  10 Ten Best Perfumes of 2022 overviews today with Sr. Contributors Hernando Courtright and Rachel Watson and while they both live in the tri-state area (New York, Connecticut, New Jersey), there isn’t a single overlap in their 10 Best Perfumes of 2022. Now it’s time to reveal their respective selections–Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief

What are the top 10 best perfumes of 2022

Sr. Contributor Rachel Watson’s 10 Best Perfumes of 2022

What was most surprising to me as I compiled my list of favorite fragrances from 2022 is the fact that so many of my selections were from brands I had not tried or purchased bottles from until this year. This can only be confirmation that despite the thousands of new releases, there are still so many worthwhile scents to be created and explored. I present my 10 Best Perfumes of 2022 (in alphabetical order)-Rachel Watson, Sr. Contributor:

Anatole Lebreton Brioche (Anatole Lebreton): I hesitated to include this one since it was released as a limited edition and promptly sold out around the world but, it is too good to pass over.  Honestly, bread is not what comes to my mind when wearing this, despite the name, there is not a very pronounced grain note. Brioche is more powdery with soft fruity notes that give it the feel of mimosa flowers.  Overall, Brioche is a perfect comfort scent just like how a fresh loaf of bread or pastry baking in your kitchen gives the entire house a certain coziness.  I hear from Mr. Lebreton that it may come back in 2023 – keep your eyes peeled!

Angelos Creations Olfactives Yloud-Yloud (Angelos Balamis) Just when you think there is nothing more that can be done with oud to make it interesting, Angelos Balamis comes out with his own take on this ubiquitous note to prove us wrong.  Yes, rose and oud is the traditional Arabic combination but, what happens when rose is replaced with some of the biggest, most indolic white florals?  You have Yloud-Yloud, of course!  Dense, chewy, barnyard oud balanced by creamy ylang-ylang, jasmine, orris and tonka – this is no shy wallflower however, it is also very well behaved for such lusciousness.  Yloud-Yloud is another Angelos masterpiece.

Areej Le Dore Civet de Nuit (Russian Adam and Sultan Pasha): I love when great perfumers collaborate on a scent, and could you get any better than with these two?  The kings of oud and animalic fragrances come together to create one of the best retro-vintage scents I have smelled.  The comparisons to Bal à Versailles parfum by Jean Desprez (1962) are spot on; Civet de Nuit is a sexy, animalic beast.  However, after that initial blast, the real mastery shines through with the exquisite use of jasmine, tobacco, Mysore sandalwood, olibanum and labdanum.  I cannot do any more justice to this scent than the mesmerizing review by Ida so, I urge you to click the link and then hurry to get a bottle before it is, as they say, history.

Azman Killer Vavoom (Miguel Matos) from AZMAN, an independent  house that immediately caught my attention, not just because it is based in the UAE but because the founder and creative director, Husen Baba, draws upon his life of world travel and mixed heritages to create “moments” in scent.  I can definitely relate to the multi-culturalism found in the UAE and the desire of this country to embrace history and culture while aiming to achieve greatness beyond what the world has seen anywhere else.  Baba has clearly experienced this himself and takes it to heart in his creations. I chose Killer Vavoom as my favorite of the initial releases as it combines classic musky-leathery notes with newer gourmands to create the best of both worlds.  I adore the buttery suede mixed with chocolate and stewed fruits – there is something so sexy about this one!

10 Best Perfumes of 2022

Der Duft Canvas (Freddie Albrighton): I love when a fragrance really surprises you.  Freddie Albrighton, who is a tattoo artist as well as perfumer, used ink and painted canvas as the inspiration for Der Duft’s latest release, Canvas. It is the perfect description for a scent that includes such a variety of notes ranging from rhubarb and licorice to honey, seaweed and geranium.  What would the artist create for this “painting”?  I see a very dark still life, a bowl of fruit illuminated by a single candlestick, the smell of the burning beeswax mingles with a more intense smoky fire somewhere out of frame.  Is that hookah tobacco I smell?  Perhaps the setting is an Arabian tent by the gulf.  Spicy rose and geranium are the perfect accompaniment to this caravan of scents.  What will Der Duft Canvas reveal to you?

Floratropia Le Feu (Delphine Thierry): All-natural scents have always been available but, it seems that 2022 is the year where they have truly bloomed.  Perhaps the common link is perfumer, Delphine Thierry, who signed the first releases from both Floratropia and from, Hima Jomo (see my next choice).  Clearly Ms. Thierry has become the go-to perfumer when you want to explore naturals at their best.  Le Feu, as I mentioned in my review, is a surprising overdose of white florals mixed smoked amber vanilla creating a spiced milky fragrance as comforting as a warm cup of chai.  If the cold winter months are getting you down, there is nothing better than a little fire.

Hima Jomo Summer in Paro (Delphine Thierry):  A brand that draws inspiration from and utilizes the natural resources of the vast and varying regions of Tibet, how unexpected and wonderful!  Here again, we see the masterful natural perfumer, Delphine Thierry, creating truly unique scents from a pallet of quality raw materials that are both indigenous to Tibet and also have Ayurvedic properties.  I truly enjoyed each of the four “Seasons” initially released by founder, Vittoria Jiaxin Liu & Randry Glorieux, (see my review of Autumn in Lhoka), but my favorite of the bunch was Summer in Paro.  It is not at all a typical summer scent.  The mix of honey, balsam fir and patchouli create a slightly animalic earthy scent that would be right at home on the rocky cliffs of the Himalayas. Hima Jomo Summer in Paro really does take you on olfactive journey to the top of the world.

In Fieri Ceremony (Enrico Buccella and Maria Teresa Venezia) is from house I was not familiar with until this year.  Thanks to my experience with last year’s release and 2022 Art & Olfaction Award Finalist, Park of the Monsters, I was very eager to hear about the newest release from the brand, Ceremony. The fact that Ceremony includes some of my favorite notes of violet, iris and honey made it even more certain that it would be worth the effort to test it before the year end. I was not disappointed.  Ceremony is a scent that deserves a patient wearing, what may seem at the start as a cosmetic, powdery scent you have smelled before becomes a dusty beeswax mixed with a beautiful floral bouquet.  Just as Park of the Monsters had a retro feel, so does Ceremony.  The animalic notes mixed with the floral creates an elegant vintage vibe.  I was also amazed by the longevity and sillage of such a “soft” scent.  This is no quick service but a true Ceremony of love.  I look forward to sharing more about this gorgeous scent in upcoming review.

Jorum Studio Pony Boy (Euan McCall) is another last minute entry, I had actually planned to include Healing Berry from the earlier released Scottish Odyssey Collection however, after trying this newest addition to the Jorum Studio line, I reconsidered.  While both fragrances are perfect examples of the Jorum style, highlighting unique ingredients from their homeland of Scotland, it is Pony Boy that further pushed the boundaries and produces a completely natural smelling vegetal scent. Said to be an olfactive representation of a kelpie: a shape-shifting folkloric figure rumored to inhabit lochs, Pony Boy is definitely magical. The mix of pink grapefruit, rhubarb and beetroot conjures an image of an enveloping veil of pink mist floating over the shadowy lochs. Jorum Studio Pony Boy, just as its namesake kelphie suggests, is a temptress luring you in for another sniff.

Strangers Parfumerie Sweet Farewell (Prin Lomros): I am sucker for a good rice note in perfumes and Sweet Farewell, based on a Thai dessert called “Kanom Jaak”, is a truly unique gourmand that changes up the more typical coconut / rice accord with the addition of tea-like Nipa Palm leaves. While not every creation from the prolific Prin Lomros is a love, I can always appreciate the artistry and I tend to enjoy the ones, like Sweet Farewell, where he ties the fragrance to his Thai roots. My mouth starts to water whenever I smell Sweet Farewell, and like any delicious dessert, it keeps you coming back for more.

Honorable Mentions ALL WIN AWARDS: Akro Ink, Arquiste Indigo Smoke, Calaj Panther Fangs, Dusita Montri, Guerlain Shalimar Millesime Tonka, Maher Olfactive Waking Dream, Masque Milano Sleight of Fern, Papillon Hera, Senyoko Hora de la Verdad, Zoologist Sacred Scarab

Best niche perfumes of 2022

Continuing 10 Best Perfumes of 2022 with Hernando Courtright, Sr. Contributor

ROYAL TOBACCO AMOUAGE OPUS VII (Cécile Zarokian): Just wow! Master perfumer Cécile Zarokian  composed a modern tobacco masterpiece. The latest release from the Library Collection presents a complex and intense high-quality tobacco that is just so realistic. The Frankincense and bergamot opening set the tone before the darkness of the smoky tobacco takes over with boldness balanced with the vanilla’s smoothness. This one is just an awesome-smelling fragrance that lasts all day on me. This is an archetypal winter fragrance.

BYREDO DE LOS SANTOS: Quite a year for BYREDO‘S Ben Gorman. The Spanish house, Puig acquired a majority stake in his brand in a deal reportedly worth $1 billion and he also released three exceptional fragrances. DE LOS SANTOS like all their scents tells a story. This one pay homage to Día de Los Muertos and All Saint’s Day and celebrates the ritual of remembrance. For me, it is all about sage and incense which gives this earthy, bright, and well-balanced scent a mysterious quality about it. A very transitional scent. Wear it well.

DS & DURGA BISTRO WATERS (David Seth Moltz) D.S. and Durga’s founders David and Kavi present Bistro Waters their ode to the hipster ’90s bistro scene in NY (you had to have been there). Their scents are idiosyncratic and this fragrance is no different. It’s perfect for those who look toward the way a scent can settle you down. So relax and let the citrus freshness envelope you and escort you into the kitchen with a recipe of ingredients that slyly reveal themselves throughout the wear like coriander seeds, bell pepper, basil, and nutmeg. All their scents are created exclusively in-house and crafted by hand in small batches which is the only way you can create a scent like this!

GUCCI FLORA GORGEOUS JASMINE: Such a joyfully cool and refreshing fragrance. This brings the summer into the room. I adore it. But for those that don’t love white florals please go to your corner. Gorgeous Italian mandarin and bergamot notes had me at the opening. The jasmine is rich but those opening notes keep it in check. The scent is creamy smooth and never heady or cloying. A relaxed elegance. The patchouli in the dry down is just a whisper in the summer breeze.

Best perfumes of 2022

Kelly +Jones MEZCAL AÑEJO (Steven Claisse and Kelly Jones) 2022: Kelly Jones’s Limited Edition is the fifth in her spectacular Mezcal collection and my favorite. And, it was hard to choose. It is a blend of Brocade Spices and Velveted Fruit. With notes of Velvet Jasmine, Leather, Smoked Amber, Guajillo, and Golden Peach this is a world-class cocktail that I wish I could sip on it on a cool Mexican-inspired night. A portion of every Eau de Parfum sale goes to Programa Vaca. This Mexico-based organization is helping to rebuild the country’s earthquake-affected rural areas with sustainable architecture and natural materials, for long-term, positive human impact. Bravo Kelly!

MAISON CRIVELLI PATCHOULI MAGNETIK (Quentin Bisch.): I admit I arrived late to this house which was not on my radar screen until earlier this year when I met founder Thibaud Crivelli. Of the fourteen in the line this one spoke to me because well, I love me patchouli. The scent is inspired by the experience of his motorcycle expedition through patchouli plantations during a tropical storm. I’ll take his word for it. What we have here is full-throttle patchouli, but what I enjoyed here were its earthy elegance and the gardenia. The dry down is where the payoff is.

MEMO PARIS MADURAI (Gaël Montero): Over the summer I was given a preview of this scent by a MEMO colleague. I waited for its release and I’m even more enthralled. Not one, not two, but three Jasmines are key to the composition. Jasmine Sambac, Indian Jasmine, and Egyptian Jasmine. But an alluring fruity peach note does some serious arm-twisting to get up front. Bubble gummy in the best possible way. Doesn’t quite reach the sexiness I desire but tantalizing non the less. Bloomingdale’s has released a 150-Year Commemorative Bottle with a much more vibrant design (same juice)

PARFUMS de MARLY HALTANE: Originally released as an exclusive to Harrods (hence the medium olive green color of the flacon) HALTANE arrived stateside in early Spring. One of its best qualities is that it is well-suited for year-round wear, and wears well day and night. For work or a date, it feels right. Safe but in the best way. It opens with a fresh blast of bergamot. Then the lavender takes over. Now I have a love/ hate relationship with lavender but here the love prevails. When the oud and wood come out to play it’s not intrusive. Overall it straddles being ultra-modern with old-school sensibilities. A nicely blended Fougere perfume. Projects well.

SANA JARDIN VENUS OF VERBENA (Carlos Benaim): Not clear why SANA JARDIN flies below the radar. First, master perfumer Carlos Benaim is the nose behind Sana Jardin’s fragrances. Two, Amy Christiansen, founder of Sana Jardin, contributes to the United Nations’ focus on sustainable development and empowerment for women. And three, the scents are incredible. Venus of Verbena Eau De Parfum is a fresh green citrus blend that showcases the brightness of verbena with a sparkling note of Litsea cubeba and Italian lemon oil. Just a hint of vetiver contributes to the elegant and refined woody accent of the dry down. Pristine, sheer, and invigorating, it’s so fresh, you almost want to sip it.

TOM FORD ROSE DE CHINE: Tom Ford’s world got better when Estée Lauder bought his brand for close to $3 billion this year. That being said, I don’t expect any drop-off in quality. ROSE DE CHINE is a third of a trilogy from the Private Rose Garden Collection, each inspired by the exquisite, rare blooms in Tom Ford’s own garden. This is my favorite of the three. A soft, elegant, and gorgeous rose. The Chinese peony opens up juicy and spicy at the top and evolves giving off a slightly smoky note but overall, it’s fresh and light. This is one sexy boudoir scent. Longevity could be a whisper longer but who’s complaining?

  • Sounds like an amazing bunch of fragrances. I have no doubt they are all great.
Makes me feel bad that I haven’t smelled most of them though.
Balsim fir and animalic scars me on the first option.
Der Duft’s sounds very interesting but licorice kinda scares me.
Haltane sounds right up my ally, even though I too have a love hate kinda deal with lavender. Would probably love that one the most.

  • I’m excited to see an ylang-ylang perfume (Yloud-Yloud) on the list. It’s my favorite note, so I’m hoping it makes a comeback.

Canvas Der Duft looks so fascinating with those tart fruits, licorice, and ink. Would love to win it. In the USA.

  • I loved this list, it was very helpful and I loved how intriguing it was to read this article. I agree with the mentioned fragrances — they sound absolutely beautiful. I would like to win a 50 ml bottle of Summer In Paro. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • The note of honey stood out to me in Rachel’s list. It’s a note that has grown on me over the years. She introduced me to some new fragrances including Foratropia Le Feu and Sweet Farewell (love a rice note).

In Hernando’s list Venus of Verbena stood out as the perfume I’d most like to try. Sana Jardin is a wonderful house; I have appreciated many of their offerings but have yet to purchase a bottle. Maybe one day!

Of the fragrances listed I would most like to win Summer In Paro. I live in Indiana.

  • Two great additional lists! I am curious about Der Duft Canvas, In Fieri Ceremony, and Hima Jomo Summer in Paro. It’s also fun to see the overlap with other people’s choices, including a Amouage and Brioche. I’d love to win Summer in Paro! Thank you for another great draw. I am in the U.S.

  • Thank you for your thoughts on more fantastic fragrances. Killer Vavoom is already on my wishlist, as is Rose De Chine. Madurai sounds unique, with its three different Jasmine notes. Also, Canvas is definitely intriguing with its rhubarb, licorice, honey, seaweed and geranium notes. If lucky, I’d choose Summer in Paro or Canvas. Mich USA

  • Rachel’s list was a great mix of new Fragrance houses. Indigio HimoJimo Summer in Paro sounds wonderful, Azmon Killer VaVoom great Fragrance. As for Hernando alot of great picks which were more familiar to me. PDM Haltane ,Gucci Flora, Maison Crivelli Patchouli.Thank you for this Chance – IndigioHimoJimo Summer In Paro sounds wonderful USA

  • Congratulations, Cafleurebon!
Two excellent Best Of lists filled with amazing fragrances.

Some I know well, some I would like to get to know!

    Thank you, Rachel and Hernando.

    Bring on 2023!

  • Thanks to Sr. Contributors, Rachel and Hernando, for compiling their lists. With so many great scents out this year, I know it was tough.

I have yet to try anything from Strangers Parfumerie and Rachel’s comments on Sweet Farewell, specifically the mention of the tea-like leaves mixed with coconut and rice, make me want to take the plunge and start exploring that house. Jorum Studio Pony Boy is one I have never heard of but Rachel’s description of its magical (and vegetal) tones has me googling it in another tab already. Rachel also reminded me of Akro Ink, a release form eariler in the year that intrigued me but I never got around to sampling – I must remedy that.

Hernando had some great picks as well. Sana Jardin Venus of Verbena sounds exhilarating and perfect for when this winter weather finally breaks. He also chose Kelly+Jones Mezcal Anejo, yet another on my “short list” that seems to be causing quite a buzz. Oh so many fragrances to try.

Should I be selected as a winner, I choose Parfums de Marly Haltane. I’m from NC, USA

  • Akro Ink, Arquiste Indigo Smoke smell amazing. I have the Dusita in My collection.
I am not familiar with the other honorable mentions (That’s why I frequent the site).
And I have actually smelled most of the other best of list.
I have Bistro Waters, although it doesn’t last long on me, also have the Mezcal Anejo and De los Santos.
In spite of being from Oklahoma USA

  • I really like Hernandos selections! I so want to experience Royal Tobacco more than just smelling it at Neiman. But I really still enjoyed it quite a bit. Haltane has always been something I have a nod to but never pulled the trigger to having in my stash. It’s definitely worthy of this list. Tom Ford Rose isn’t something I’ve gotten my nose on yet but it does look and sound interesting sense I am getting my nose on more rose fragrances recently and they’re pretty nice! From all these selections I’d most likely pick Royal Tobacco and Haltane behind it. Much love from PA USA

  • Once again an incredible list by the CaFleureBon crew of fragrances for me to check out. Personally surprised to see Gucci Flora on the list and I can see how someone might like the scent but personally not my cup of tea. I see quite a few fragrances that I’ve read about in past posts on the top lists and based on the past post and the detailed descriptions in this list, it makes me want to try them even more. One brand that I’ve heard a lot about but not of the specific perfume on the list is Parfums de Marly Haltane. Many people consider Parfums de Marly as one of the best Niche perfume houses and from the descriptions on the list, I would love to have a bottle of Parfums De Marly Haltane if I were to win. From TX, USA.

  • John Michael Jones says:

Thanks to everyone at Cafleurebon for another outstanding year of incredible content. I can’t begin to imagine how hard this must have been for Rachel & Hernando, compiling these lists. With so many great scents out this year, I know this must have been tough. These were amazing choices that I want to experience asap but I have my sights set on Royal Tobacco. Honorable mentions were a home run! If if were to choose from what’s in the giveaway, I’ll choose PDM Haltane. I live in Boston, Massachusetts. USA

  • Summer in Paro do sounds like the kind of fragrance one uses solely for self pleasure, when feeling like contemplating, meditating and mind traveling to the peaks of the Himalayans. Seems to be an escape door from the day to day stress and the dullness that we all experience. If Summer in Paro’s materials have Ayurvedic properties then it is no wonder.
Please count me in for Summer in Paro. Europe. Thank you!

  • Amouage Royal Tobacco really seems to be a love of many. Yeah, I would have loved to experience the 1990s NYC, too and even the 80s, too. I didn’t know D.S. Durga’s founders have been in NYC for so long. My choices are
    Parfums de Marly Haltane
    Hima Jimo Summer in Paro

    I am in US.

  • I love reading these articles!
I really enjoyed Rachel’s way of experiencing and describing fragrances in a very sensorial way and Hernando’s selection of jasmines and the more practical info that he added to the article.
I would love to win Canvas (a still nature painting in dim light has such mysterious charm about it!) or Summer in Paro. A summer scent with earthy and aromatic notes that belong on Himalaya sounds fantastic !
    from the EU.

  • This reel of review is amazing!!!Lots of perfume reviewed this years with a great ranking and Top 10! I particularly love Royal Tobacco from Amouage by the master perfumer Cecile Zarokian …lots of Licorice and Tobacco, just my cup of tea.
Then I also enjoyed on my husband Sacred Scarab from Sultan Pasha.
For this giveaway I would like to enter for Summer in Paro and Canvas!

    Claudia, Italy

  • Thank you for the work you are doing with these best-of 2022 lists! I can only imagine what a hard job is to pinpoint such a small number of perfumes, when there is plenty to choose from. Fortunately, 2022 was a year that saw the launch of many fragrances, and also numerous new houses launched, which is only a good thing, because there is everything for everyone’s taste.
From the amazing list of perfumed prizes, I am quite curious about Summer in Paro. I like the concept behind the whole series and I love summer season, so I think this one will be suited for my taste. Good luck to everyone who participated and many thanks to the editors of this blog for putting everything in place so we can enjoy such spectacular fragrances!

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

I love the rose from ROSE DE CHINE by Tom Ford a soft, elegant, and gorgeous rose.
I would like to win a 50 ml bottle of Summer In Paro. I am from EU

  • Now these are some interesting choices! I’m excited to see Vavoom made it to top 10 again, as well as Memo Paris finally being among the honorables as it is one of my favorite perfume houses.
Unfortunately, I have no experience with most others on the list, but thanks to the amazing descriptions, I know I’ll have to try Strangers Parfumerie Sweet Farewell, In Fieri Ceremony and Der Duft Canvas. I must say I’m sorry Anatole Lebreton Brioche is not available any more as it would be simply amazing to try it!
My first choice would be Canvas and second Summer In Paro.
    Hugs from Croatia, EU.

  • I was pleased to see the two creations from one of my favorite brands made by Delphine Thierry. She is truly a genius with natural perfumery. Although I prefer autumn from Hima Jomo, I do find other seasons really beautiful. As for floratropia (great discovery of this year), my favorite is Ambre, although Feu is truly magnificent too. Also, totally agree about Brioche! I bought it immediately after release, it’s sweet and cozy.

I live in France, EU and I would like to win Summer in Paro.

  • Ooh I completely agree about Sana Jardin!! I love so many of theirs. Jaipur Chant, Sandalwood Temple, Incense Water are all amazing!
And Hera by Papillon was also a gift, thanks to her daughter for allowing us to share the blend.
I must try Sacred Scarab. Zoologist is always a surprising journey in a bottle!
I love how you described Canvas and the notes are intriguing so if I win this giveaway that’s my choice!
Thank you for both of your great work and the give aways.
    In US

  • smell? Perhaps the setting is an Arabian tent by the gulf. Spicy rose and geranium are the perfect accompaniment to this caravan of scents. What will Der Duft Canvas reveal to you? I am fascinated by the perfumer and this house sounds like a magical concoction. Wonderful choice by Rachel. I am really fascinated by Patchouli Magnetik from Hernandos list. If I am lucky to win I would love to win Canvas from Der duft. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • Great choices by Rachel and Hernando respectively Summer in Paro and Amouage Royal Tobacco. If I am successful I would like to win Summer in paro by hima jimo. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • ianbradleyandrews says:

haltane sounds wonderful. I’d love to win that. I also reading about patchouli magnetik. Sounds great too. Royal tobacco too. This was a big year for perfume. I’d like to win Haltane tho. I live in Indiana.

  • This is definitely another top ten list that speaks to me, Azman’s and Crivelli’s being amongst my favorite from all the perfumes I’ve bought this year (based on your reviews).

Thanks for your generosity and your insights and for a year long living in scented dreams.

“Summer In Paro”, if I win, would be my choice- patchouli rocks again!

    I live in Portugal/EU

  • The thing I appreciate about Cafleurebon and its contributors is that I’ve never heard of many of the frags mentioned anywhere else. Rachel’s list is exactly that and I’d love to sample something new. I’m excited PDM Haltane made Hernando’s list. It is my new obsession and I’d love to win it. New Jersey, USA

  • What a list, for what I read, those are excellent choices.
From Rachel’s list, I have get my nose on any of them, but from Hernando’s list, I have smelled Royal Tobacco from Amouage, Flora by Gucci (one of my partner’s favorite), and Haltane by Parfums de Marly.

I wish I can win the giveaway of Haltane by Parfums de Marly. The versatility to wear all year around, plus the fougere style, which is one of my favorite, makes me want that fragrance. I don’t own any Parfums de Marly yet, hopefully the new year will bring one with this giveaway.

From Massachusetts, happy 2023 to all.

  • Thanks to Sr. Contributors, Rachel and Hernando, for compiling their lists. I understand how daunting of a task it must have been and I couldn’t have done it any better. Some of your choices I have heard of before, such as “ROYAL TOBACCO AMOUAGE OPUS VII” and “PARFUMS de MARLY HALTANE”. Also, “Areej Le Dore Civet de Nuit” have been mentioned in a majority of these lists, so I suppose I’ll have to check that out myself. I can not wait to see Olya and Steven’s top 10.

I would like to win Hima Jomo Summer in Poro. Rachel’s description caught my attention. I hope I can finally win something. Happy new year!

    Writing from Sweden, EU 🙂

  • I loved how both of you related so personally to the fragrances you selected and described, as truly individual, emotional and intellectual experiences. It was interesting to see Amouage Royal Tobacco in the tops of both of your lists, as well as some of the other Cafleurebon contributors. This, I totally agree with. It’s a remarkable perfume and it’s great to see the scent, and amazing perfumer, Cecile Zarokian, appreciated. It was great to read about perfumes that I’ve heard of before, but also to discover new scents.

I would absolutely love to win Hima Jomo Summer in Poro. I would absolutely love to try this one out, because it sounds like the type that I, myself, find truly exquisite.

I sincerely wish a Happy New Year to Cafleurebon, its staff and its readers!

    Writing from the EU.

  • Thank you, Rachel and Hernando, for taking on the task of picking favourites from this strong year for fragrance. I was thrilled to see some of the ones I myself have had the opportunity of trying through diehard sampling, such as: Tom Ford Rose de Chine, Parfums de Marly Haltane and ROYAL TOBACCO AMOUAGE OPUS XIV. Thanks to Cafleurebon, I have had the possibility of discovering and digging deep into indie and independent perfume houses throughout the year, and for that, I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Great choices for the giveaway. If I had to choose one, it would probably be Summer in Poro by Hima Jomo. A scent pulled straight from the rocky Himalayas intrigue me, to say the least.

  • Thank you for the work you are doing with these best-of 2022 lists! I can only imagine what a hard job is to pinpoint such a small number of perfumes, when there is plenty to choose from. To the joy of me, and I suppose you too, with 2022 there came many new perfumes and houses to release them. I sincerely hope that 2023 can continue where 2022 left off, while improving on other aspects (heh).

From the amazing list of perfumed prizes, I am quite curious about Summer in Paro. The idea of a pine-y honey scent sounds divine.

I wish everyone a Happy New Year!

    I reside in Sweden, EU.

  • I would love for 2023 to be year of new discoveries much like Rachel’s- and they came to be on her top ten! With so many brands appearing every day, these list help me know what to look for. I do enjoy licorice so Der Duft’s Canvas gets my vote. In TX, US.

  • Reading through the CaFleureBon editors top ten lists, I’m struck by the diversity. There are so many great choices and so many relatively new perfumers are represented. It’s great to see the industry grow and evolve. I would love to win either Summer in Paro or PdM Haltane. Md, USA.

  • Ooo this list in particular really speaks to me! I haven’t tried most of Rachel’s choices but based on her list of honorable mentions I really think I should: Indigo Smoke, Hera, and Sacred Scarab are all so gorgeous and unique! I’ve also been wanting to try Hima Jomo Summer in Paro ever since I read about it here. The inspiration from nature and the animalic earthiness of it really speak to me. If I’m lucky enough to win, my choice would be the bottle of Summer in Paro. I’m in MN, USA. Thanks for the opportunity and happy new year!

  • Rachel & Hernando!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Fantastic Choices!!! Civet de Nuit is SO Great! ❤️ I also love the Honorable Mentions! This year was longer and fuller than I remember! I would be so lucky to win any of these bottles! Thank you for all you do!!! ❤️ USA

  • Thanks to Hernando and Rachel for their compilations. You both picked some wonderful scents. Hernando’s description of Memo Paris Madurai, with its triple threat of jasmine, peaches, and bubble gum has me salivating. I also really enjoyed his thoughts on Parfums De Marly Haltane and the bit about having love/hate relationship with lavender. I feel similarly and would like to get my nose on that one for sure. Rachel’s list also had some very good choices as well. I really liked her description of Hima Jimo Summer in Paro, where she pointed out that it isn’t what one mya typically expect from a summer fragrance – no beachy or suntan lotion smells – rather, its summer on a wooded mountain top in Tibet. Now if I were to win, it would probably be between Summer in Paro and Haltane. Man, this is tough…..Ok, I think I’ll go with Haltane. Reading from NC, USA

  • These all sound so interesting and complex. Have yet to try any. 🙁 I would like to win Summer In Paro. From Ct USA. Thanks!

  • Angelos Balamis‘S Yloud Yloud sounds interesting because I love oud/rose combos. Replacing rose with white florals sounds great! Russian Adam with Sultan Pasha in Civet de nuit with an animalic sexy beast sounds also interesting. Freddie Albrighton Der Duft with the hookah tobacco settings.

I enjoyed reading about the 3 natural selection but did not try them. Amouage Royal Tobacco is a tobacco that pushes the envelope. PdM Haltane is a safe oud that bergamont and lavender introduce beautifully. Mezcal Anejo with the beautiful leather and smoked amber. MAISON CRIVELLI PATCHOULI MAGNETIK by Quentin Bisch because just radical patchouli has to be included in a full list.
In Fieri Ceremony With beeswax with floral bouquet.

This is an excellent list and I plan to come back to it as I get more into fragrances.

USA. I would love to try PdM Haltane and Der Duft Canvas. Thank you for your time and the giveaway

  • Rachel, It is fantastic that perfumes that are part of your list are from brands that you have never tried. This shows that, every year, new brands and new perfumers emerge. For me, your list, also has names that didn´t know and there is a “winner”: Delphine Thierry, the young and talented “Nez” behind Floratropia, Hima Jomo, Lubin and some amazing Masque Milano. Your choice of scents goes from animalic, gourmands, leatherys to white florals and your last choice (unknown to me) has made me salivate and I want to run out and buy it: I love Kanom Jaak (last month I was in Thailand and eat a lot) so Sweet Farewell from Prin Lomros catched my interest. From your honorable mentions I would I would highlight Ink by Akro, an amazing scent with a metallic quality. Hernando point out to mayor brand acquisitions. Byredo by Puig and, what a pity, Tom Ford by L´oreal. I hope new additions will made it to the list like this year De Los Santos and Rose de Chine. So good fresh scents are in your list such as Venus of Verbena or Bistro Waters and I guess you love jasmine : Madurai and Gorgeous Jasmine. I live in Spain and I would like to wine Summer in Paro or Canvas

  • What a great list of powerful fragrances! I’m honestly surprised to see such different creations on the same list, but I guess that’s to expect when you give the task to professionals. My list would be boring… Out of all of them, I’m really attracted to Yloud-Yloud because I’m nutrs about tge Ylang flower in perfumes.
And a big applause to all honorable mentions, especially Maison Crivelli and Tom Ford – they well deserved it!
I’m from EU and wouldn’t mind any of the perfumes available for my area. ❤️

  • Nice to see two completely different selections of the top 10. Rachel gravitated towards smaller newer and mainly artisanal houses, Hearnando’s choices are coming from more established, mainstream houses, among them some corporate juggernauts. It is a lovely presentation of how colorful and broad the fragrance world is.
I was happy to see Der Duft Canvas among Rachel’s picks since I had followed Freddie’s fragrance blog more than ten years ago when I ventured into fragrances. Another one that caught my eye is Jorum Studio Pony Boy which has already landed on my try list besides Healing Berry. Royal Tobacco has again received the title »masterpiece« and has landed right on the top of my sample list of 2023.
I would really love to have a Der Duft Canvas bottle if I win. I live in the EU.
Thanks to everyone at Cafleurebon for sharing their passion and creating incredible content.
    Happy New Year to all!

  • I found here so many interesting perfumes!
I love Haltane and can’t say that I am fan of Gucci Flora Jasmine!!
I am very intrigued by Areej Le Dore Civet de Nuit because I have heard so many interesting reviews about Bal à Versailles !
Would like to win Haltane !

  • Love that this was the year of experiments and mixing cool ingridients. All the parfumers mentioned are so talented. Id love to win Summer in Paro

  • I have to say it is always a pleasure reading a review and now a list from the only ones Rachel and Hernando.
Every list is special and these ones are not the exeption. I love that they added Angelos Creations Olfactives Yloud-Yloud, In Fieri Ceremony and MAISON CRIVELLI PATCHOULI MAGNETIK, for me they are amazing fragrances that I had the pleasure and honour to try this year. And amazing year for perfumery I have to say and sure this one coming will be great if not greater.
I would love to win Haltane by Parfums de Marly, but any perfume from the giveaway would be great too.
    USA here.

  • Happy New Year Cafleurebon , from your Happy Pastry Chef

I do have favorite brands, but most of the time my my purchases are based on the style of perfumery, rather than to follow 2-3 brands like a fanboy.

☆ Anatole Lebreton Brioche (Anatole Lebreton):
Such a turnaround of events, reading about a fragrance named Brioche from a Pastry Chef perspective was WoW , and a second later learning it is already discontinued limited edition 🙁
☆ Angelos Creations Olfactives Yloud-Yloud (Angelos Balamis)
    No barnyard ouds for me
☆ Areej le Dore Civet de Nuit (Russian Adam and Sultan Pasha)
No animalic beasts for me too
☆ Azman Killer Vavoom (Miguel Matos)
AZMAN Majnoon I think smells like Zwetschgendatschi , the famous German Plum Cake, with a big cup of 100% Arabica made espresso. I so need to get my hands on the whole range of fragrances.
Killer Vavoom actually kind of reminds me of the cake I made yesterday, Chocolate Ganache Cake, with Macerated Plums
☆ Der Duft Canvas (Freddie Albrighton):
Rhubarb , licorice and honey , I’d like to see such painting
☆ Floratropia Le Feu (Delphine Thierry):
    Warm cup of tea
☆ Hima Jomo Summer in Paro (Delphine Thierry):
    Himalayan honey and patchouli
☆ In Fieri Ceremony (Enrico Buccella and Maria Teresa Venezia)
    Floral and animalic
☆ Jorum Studio Pony Boy (Euan McCall)
    Scottish odyssey
☆ Strangers Parfumerie Sweet Farewell (Prin Lomros):
” … based on a Thai dessert called “Kanom Jaak”
Wow , such a surprise, Kanom Jaak is traditional for the region. It’s made of sticky rice flour, shredded coconut and palm sugar, and it’s covered by leaves of a local mangrove palm, and roasted on a charcoal fire . The mangrove palm leaves do have specific sweet, edible sap , giving the Kanom Jaak its specific taste.
☆ Amouage Royal Tobacco (Cecile Zarokian):
There’s no citrusy feel to me,even in the opening.
Royal Tobacco is a masterpiece, but it’s not as dark to me. The smell to me is like making Licorice Cake, with Macerated Plums and Walnuts, and later on sharing it with friends, while all smoking some top of the line Cuban cigarettes. It is grown-up decadent tobacco fragrance, but it’s not not mature.
    ☆ BYREDO DE LOS SANTOS:
    Earthy and balanced
☆ DS & DURGA BISTRO WATERS (David Seth Moltz)
I don’t know Bistro Waters , a friend of mine owns most of their fragrances, I’ve smelled them at his house, and I feel like DS & DURGA is not a brand for me
    ☆ GUCCI FLORA GORGEOUS JASMINE:
According to Hernando creamy smooth Summer breeze
☆ Kelly +Jones MEZCAL AÑEJO (Steven Claisse and Kelly Jones) 2022:
    Mexican boozy night
☆ MAISON CRIVELLI PATCHOULI MAGNETIK (Quentin Bisch.):
The fragrance made me think of wedding I attended back in 2019 in Hanauma Bay in Oahu Hawaii. I was not just a guest, but responsible for the menu, and the Chocolate and Peach Beach Themed Wedding Cake. I believe i did great.
At one point it started pouring, and the whole thing reminded me of Patchouli Magnetik
☆ MEMO PARIS MADURAI (Gaël Montero):
As a Pastry Chef I can’t help it, it also made me think of making one of trendiest desserts for the whole 22′ , Jasmine Panna Cotta , this time with candied peach slices.
    ☆ Parfums de Marly Haltane
To me Haltane is just ultra modern, and not old-school . Lavender is cozy , and not super aggressive , and it mixes with the praline, saffron and a bit of oud perfectly. To me it smells like Chocolate Praline and Saffron Crêpe Cake I do on private orders only. I imagined eating the cake, while on a picnic in the woods.
☆SANA JARDIN VENUS OF VERBENA (Carlos Benaim):
    Elegant fragrance
☆ TOM FORD ROSE DE CHINE:
“Tom Ford’s world got better when Estée Lauder bought his brand for close to $3 billion this year. That being said, I don’t expect any drop-off in quality.”

    BETTER ?!?!?!?
It became worst, such mergings do not lead to positive outcomes, especially for the customers with sensitive noses like mine.
The new rose fragrances from Tom Ford i have not smelled , but I will.

Dusita Montri, Guerlain Shalimar Millesime Tonka, Maher Olfactive Walking Dream, Zoologist Sacred Scarab are best honorable mentions
I’ll be happy to win Parfums de Marly Haltane
Appreciate Rachel and Hernando hard work, and the giveaway campaign
    USA

  • Shibuichi2000 says:

Reading about the 20 fragrances, I had the feeling that Rachel and Hernando opened some sort of Pandora’s box, only this time it was filled with really, really nic[h]e [fragrant] things.
And whoa, you can replace the rose in the rose + oud duo? 🙂
I’d like to win Canvas and I live in Europe.

  • Ooooh, I have not smelled any of these picks, interesting! I continue to appreciate the thought that goes into all these lists. As far as what I’d pick if I won, I’m a painter and I love a licorice note, so I’d pick Canvas by Der Duft. Thanks for another awesome giveaway!
    I’m in WV, USA

  • Very interesting list of best perfumes!
Always interesting to follow Anatole Lebreton creations !
I have tried TF Rose de Chine – very beautiful, but not cap of tea ! Haltane is beautiful, but not unique!
Would like to win Haltane !
    USA

  • I loveee end of the year best fragrance picks form everyone. So many amazing things to discover in one spot. I am most drawn to Rachal’s choices in this case, although Royal Tobacco is for sure one of my must tries in the future. I also like how De los Santos sounds because of sage and incense. Back to Rachel’s picks…I am very intrigued by Brioche and I really do hope he brings it back in 20223 so I can sample it. I love bread notes , but I also love powdery mimosa so I think I’ll probably really enjoy it. Hima Jomo is already on my sailing wishlist so I’m glad to se Summer in Paro on this list. I tried Killer Vavoom and I even own Sweet Farewell – both are amazing! I’m from Illinois US and I would love to win Summer in Paro!

  • It is interesting that in these two lists by Hernando and Rachel, there was not a single overlap. However, some of the perfumes, and definitely the brands have been reviewed on Cafleurebon. I am always looking for oud perfumes, and Hernando had high praise for Parfums de Marly Haltane. Rachel’s review also had two oud perfumes. Since there is only one oud perfume in the draws, I will go for Parfums de Marly Haltane, if I were to win this generous draw. I have unfortunately not tried any of the perfumes listed. Thanks for the draws and reviews. I am from the USA.

  • And again, Happy New Year to the whole Cafleurebon crew, from Michelyn, to all current, and present reviewers, and to every single subscriber . Let’s have a great 2023

As usual I’ll share my thoughts on the fragrances I know, or want to try

    Anatole Lebreton Brioche (Anatole Lebreton):
Up until I read about Brioche, I was not aware of the fragrance. I’d like to try it, but I’m not paying the resale prices I saw on Ebay.

Angelos Creations Olfactives Yloud-Yloud (Angelos Balamis)

All Angelos Creations Olfactives fragrances I’ve tried are a bit old school for me , like a throwback to the 70s and 80s.

Areej Le Dore Civet de Nuit (Russian Adam and Sultan Pasha):

I have love-hate relationship with Areej Le Dore, some I love , some I hate with passion . I like Russian Oud , and if I have a chance, I’ll try Civet de Nuit.

    Azman Killer Vavoom (Miguel Matos)

I really like “buttery suede mixed with chocolate and stewed fruits” description from Rachel. Both Killer Vavoom and Majnoon are great, both i believe are suited for more experienced noses.

    Der Duft Canvas (Freddie Albrighton):

A few years back Der Duft was Instagram reviewer / influencer . I was interacting with him frequently back then, until all of a sudden he decided to start his own brand. I’m happy for his success.

Hima Jomo Summer in Paro (Delphine Thierry):
    +
Jorum Studio Pony Boy (Euan McCall)

Interesting brand, with artistic fragrances. No matter how much I like all 4 Hima Jomo scents , because of the uber dry skin ,I can’t wear them.

Strangers Parfumerie Sweet Farewell (Prin Lomros):

I’m familiar with Prin Lomros work, and and I’ll try to sample Sweet Farewell.

If I have to rate Rachel best honorable mentions:
    1. Guerlain Shalimar Millesime Tonka
    2. Zoologist Sacred Scarab
    3. Maher Olfactive Walking Dream

Library Collection Opus XIV Royal Tobacco
    (Cécile Zarokian)

Absolutely gorgeous fragrance, but also a changeling, smells different on different people. On me it’s thick dark scent, with more peru balsam than tobacco, incense, licorice and hefty dose of plum. The plum in Royal Tobacco reminds me of the plum in Plum Japonais by Tom Ford, my all time favorite fragrance

    De Los Santos by Byredo
When I saw Byredo name in Hernando picks, I was expecting to see Vanille Antique, such a great fragrance, but he picked De Los Santos instead. Earthy and bright indeed

DS and Durga Bistro Waters (David Seth Moltz)

The epitome of a hipster brand , no wonder there’s a ode to the hipster bistro scene in New York.

Kelly +Jones MEZCAL AÑEJO (Steven Claisse and Kelly Jones) 2022:

    Fragrance i’d like to try

    Maison Crivelli Patchouli Magnetik

My opinion of Patchouli Magnetik is slightly different from what Hernando is getting. Like Quentin Bisch said in the interview, there’s something metallic, and almost petrichor-ish , and other than gardenia , I get tropical flowers lurking in the background, either tiare or frangipani.
I like powerful fragrances , and Patchouli Magnetik is loud !!!

    Memo Paris Madurai (Gaël Montero)
I’ve sampled Madurai by mistake, and thankfully I’m not getting any indolic jasmine. I was expecting pungent indolic jasmine, but instead clean jasmine, some tuberose, a lot of jammy sweet peach , honey tobacco ,bergamot and suede leather. Madurai is way sweeter on me , than I expected, no wonder Hernando gets some bubble gum elements.

    Parfums de Marly Haltane
I do get the blast of lavender, and zesty bergamot in the opening, but also sage.
No doubt complex , well composed dressed up occasions fragrance, but to me Haltane is more of a classically structured woody aromatic, with slightly sweet undertones.
The magic to me happens in the heart and base , when Haltane transforms into a gorgeous safran leather, cedar, resins and vetiver combination, with slightly sweet chocolaty patchouli lurking in the background.
Strictly cold weather fragrance in my opinion.

    Tom Ford Rose de Chine

“Tom Ford’s world got better when Estée Lauder bought his brand for close to $3 billion this year. That being said, I don’t expect any drop-off in quality.”

I strongly disagree with this, my opinion is diametrically opposing…if not more.
I am a HUGE Tom Ford fanboy, clothes, shoes, bags, accessories, fragrances, you name it , with collection of close to 400 bottles, Plum Japonais is my all time favorite fragrance.
I’ve smelled all , and own almost all of the fragrance that came up under Tom Ford umbrella, and his previous experience with YSL… Estée Lauder is one of the greediest ,if not the greediest multi-billion corporation in the fragrance world.
From a perspective of a guy , who have spent huge amounts of money on everything Tom Ford, I can clearly the quality is getting worse, and worse ever since Estée Lauder get involved. There’s a reason all vintage Tom Ford fragrances to cost x 2/3 on Ebay, compared to current prices. On top of all Estée Lauder is constantly hiking up the prices. The rumor is the re-released limited edition 250ml decanters of Amber Absolute will cost around $2000 , and no , I’m not joking.
I do apologize for being too punctual, but I have soft spot for everything Tom Ford.
I’d like to win Parfums de Marly Haltane
    Thanks a lot
    USA

  • Both Rachel and Hernando’s choices show the breadth of their knowledge. With 1000s of new releases, like Rachel mentioned, it is important to stay intrigued and open-minded about different houses and note combinations that you may not have explored before. Canvas sounds wonderful. Based in the UK.

  • Thanks for the recommendations Rachel and Hernando!

I absolutely love Rachel’s favourite fragrances of 2022. Many of her choices I’ve purchased or are high on my wishlist. Killer Vavoom and Sumer in Paro are the ones I most eager to try so I’m incredible excited to particiate in this draw!

I’m similar with Fernando where I’ve neglected Maison Crivelli for too long. I’ve browsed their catalogues more times than I can remember, but always ended up buying something else. I will have to give Patchouli Magnetik a try because I love the scent of nature after rainfall. I always brings me great memories to easier and calmer times in my life and I can never have enough of these comfort scents!

    Greetings from the UK!

  • Hernando’s note about Gucci Flora Gorgeous Jasmine’s joyful cool gives me an extra reason to drop into the shops next weekend, but of the new-to-me scents on this list, Summer in Paro makes it to the top of my wishlist based on Rachel’s notes about it seeming like it would be ‘right at home’ on the rocky cliffs of the Himalayas. I love a scent with a sense of place! And for me, the animalic tilt that honey brings can be sooo compelling in a perfume. I have also been on an absolute tear when it comes to balsam fir and anything coniferous, I cannot get enough. With no vacation plans on the horizon, but a strong craving for the mountains, the vibe of this fragrance sounds perfect to me right now.

I can’t help but cross my fingers… dreaming of wining Hima Jomo’s Summer in Paro! I’m in the US, thanks for the draw.

  • This list has introduced me to few pefumes I was not aware of like Angelos Creations Olfactives, Anatole Lebreton, Kelly+Jones and Sana Jardin.I appreciate the different types of perfumes that have been highlighted on these lists – fragrances you can wear be worn during different times of the year. I have seen multiple perfumes on different top ten list like Royal tobacco (amouage) and killer vavoom (azman).
If I win, I would like canvas (Der Duft).
    Maryland, US.

  • Both Rachel and Hernando’s lists highlighted a range of perfumes that haven’t been included on the ones already published. That being said, Azman Killer Vavoom, Royal TRobacco Amouage Opus VII, and Kelly +Jones MEZCAL AÑEJO keep popping up, so they must be exceptional. Rachels thoughts about Der Duft Canvas caught my attention; I’m so curious how rhubarb, licorice, honey, seaweed, burning beeswax and geranium combine. Summer in Paro also jumped out and I’d like to try all four Seasons perfumes. Jorum Studio’s Scottish Odyssey Collection has been on my to-try list for a bit, and the pink grapefruit, rhubarb and beetroot combination in Pony Boy sounds compelling. Finally, I feel like I’ missing a good citrus in my collection, and Sana Jardin Venus of Verbena could fit the bill. Terrific lists and I need to look up a bunch of the entries in Rachel’s Honorable Mentions section. Thanks for the coverage!

I’m in the midwest, USA. I’d love to win the DER DUFT Canvas. Thanks!

  • I am in the US and would love to win Hima Jimo Summer in Paro. Combination of honey and pine sounds like a winner and I am always in a lookout for honey notes

  • Happy New Year Çafleureboun! Again great picks!!!! There are some houses I’m not familiar with but others I know and love them!!!! Love to through the site and learn more fragrances and pick the ones that catch my attention…
In this list I just loved how killer Vavoom and Haltane were described!!!! I’m from Massachusetts, US and I would love to win Haltane!!!!

  • I only tried Crivelli Patchouli and I loathed it, it’s a very weird oily sweet scent. But some other fragrances do sound interesting.
Summer in Paro is the one that sounds like it will be right up my alley!
    I’m in the EU.

  • I need to visit Esxence one day , I just have to

Some of the fragrance Rachel Watson chose I’m sure are very well made , but are not something I would wear myself.
Angelos Creations Olfactives Yloud-Yloud (Angelos Balamis)
Areej Le Dore Civet de Nuit (Russian Adam and Sultan Pasha):
In Fieri Ceremony (Enrico Buccella and Maria Teresa Venezia)
ALL 3 are too animalic for my taste

Hima Jomo Summer in Paro (Delphine Thierry):
    Summer in Scotland

    Anatole Lebreton Brioche (Anatole Lebreton):
    Delicious compliment getter

    Azman Killer Vavoom (Miguel Matos)
decadent chocolate and plum perfume for grown-ups

    Der Duft Canvas (Freddie Albrighton):
Is that hookah tobacco I smell?

    Floratropia Le Feu (Delphine Thierry):
smoked amber vanilla creating a spiced milky fragrance

Strangers Parfumerie Sweet Farewell (Prin Lomros):
    Artistic gourmand reminiscent of Thailand

    Xx Hernando Courtright
Amouage Royal Tobacco Opus XIV (Cécile Zarokian): , Realistic tobacco of the highest quality

BYREDO DE LOS SANTOS: well balanced earthy fragrance

DS & DURGA BISTRO WATERS (David Seth Moltz)
A lot of spices and some 90’s Bistro in NYC

GUCCI FLORA GORGEOUS JASMINE: easy to wear floral

Kelly +Jones MEZCAL AÑEJO (Steven Claisse and Kelly Jones) 2022:

MAISON CRIVELLI PATCHOULI MAGNETIK (Quentin Bisch.):

I don’t know what Hernando means by
full-throttle patchouli ? If really earthy, and slightly dirty, it’s not like Patchouli Magnetik smells to me

I’m a fan of Quentin Bisch, and I know and own quite a few of his fragrances, both designer , and niche.I have to say I’m now own Hibiscus Mahajad, Olya Bar review was so striking, I had no choice , but to buy the sample pack first.
Patchouli Magnetik is original, slightly sweet, slightly green, woody and earthy .

MEMO PARIS MADURAI (Gaël Montero) ,cozy natural smelling fragrance with peach and bergamot opening, woody-floral elements heart , and warm base, all of highest qualit

    PARFUMS de MARLY HALTANE:
Each to his own of course, but Haltane i believe is not a warm weather fragrance
Being a vain man compliments are really important to me.Haltane with its leather, spices, oud , and moderate sweetness , unsolicited compliments , smelling amazing. No blasts of bergamot, or lavender are available on me when sprayed on skin , maybe that’s why I don’t think there’s anything old-school in Haltane

SANA JARDIN VENUS OF VERBENA (Carlos Benaim):
    Classy Summer fragrance

TOM FORD ROSE DE CHINE I’ll try
“That being said, I don’t expect any drop-off in quality”

I’m not optimistic, not at all. Tobacco Vanille, Tuscan Leather are so diluted, compared to back in the days. A lot of fragrances were discontinued, some brought back in a much higher price range.

From all honorable mentions, I’d like to sample Milleslim Tonka, Walking Dream and Sacred Scarab

I’ll be happy to win Parfums de Marly Haltane
    Exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • I was sad to see the Brioche was a limited edition, but will keep my eyes open for that to hopefully return in 2023, that sounds awesome and I love baking. 3 jasmines in Madurai, wow. Memo is one of my favorite houses. Love that Kelly + Jones is giving back to the rural communities. I would love to win Der Duft. I would love to know what it would reveal on my skin. Thanks for the chance. Loved all the suggestions. USA.

  • Michael Prince says:

I loved Rachel and Hernando’s 10 best perfumes for 2022. Amouage Royal Tobacco and Parfums De Marly Haltane are both absolutely perfect fragrances that should be on everyone’s lists. Two that really intrigue me that I’ve been wanting to try is Azman Perfumes Killer Vavoom perfumed by the brilliant Miguel Matos and Maison Crivelli Patchouli Magnetic because I’m a huge fan of Patchouli based fragrances. I am from the USA. If I win I would choose Parfums De Marly Haltane.

  • IvanVelikov says:

    -Anatole Lebreton Brioche (Anatole Lebreton):
    French dessert
-Angelos Creations Olfactives Yloud-Yloud (Angelos Balamis)
    Scary fragrance
-Areej Le Dore Civet de Nuit (Russian Adam and Sultan Pasha):
    Again scary fragrance
    -Azman Killer Vavoom (Miguel Matos)
Husen Khan is a guy on a mission
    -Der Duft Canvas (Freddie Albrighton):
    Canvas with hookah tobacco
    -Floratropia Le Feu (Delphine Thierry):
    Natural smoked vanilla
-Hima Jomo Summer in Paro (Delphine Thierry):
    Mystical fragrance
-In Fieri Ceremony (Enrico Buccella and Maria Teresa Venezia)
    Powdery beewax
-Jorum Studio Pony Boy (Euan McCall)
    Unusual fragrance
-Strangers Parfumerie Sweet Farewell (Prin Lomros):
Thai rise dessert in a bottle
    -From the honorable mentions
To me Zoologist Cow was a bit underwhelming , Sacred Scarab is significantly better, I even bought 10ml travel spray .
Milleslim Tonka is like a unicorn, people are talking about it , but I can’t find it

    Royal Tobacco (Cecile Zarokian)
There’s a different story behind each and every Amouage fragrance, and i think the brand is loved by most Cafleurebon contributors.
Frankincense, tobacco , resins , and mild sweetness, Royal Tobacco is upscale nighttime fragrance , with Middle Eastern , but also Cuban flavor. I don’t smell liquorice through.
    -GUCCI FLORA GORGEOUS JASMINE:
    Creamy floral
-Kelly +Jones MEZCAL AÑEJO (Steven Claisse and Kelly Jones) 2022:
    Inspired by Mexico Mezcal fragrance
-MAISON CRIVELLI PATCHOULI MAGNETIK (Quentin Bisch.):
Quentin Bisch I like for Etat Libre d’Orange, Experimentum Crucis.
I love the smell of patchouli . Unusual and refined scent, with interesting story behind. I need to try it as soon as possible.
    -MEMO PARIS MADURAI (Gaël Montero):
The fragrance draws me in , jasmine meets tuberose , and other floral surprises ,sandalwood , and juicy peach . It is ating the senses Indian nectar by MEMO .
    -PARFUMS de MARLY HALTANE:
When I think Parfums de Marly , I always think Pegasus . Being in tailoring business, I would wear Haltane while working with clients at the shop , and also going out clubbing.Classy , dress to impress bespoke suit type of fragrance.
-SANA JARDIN VENUS OF VERBENA (Carlos Benaim):
    Italian like cologne

I very much oppose what Hernando said about in his reviews of .
    -TOM FORD ROSE DE CHINE:
    +
    -BYREDO DE LOS SANTOS:
Not about the scents, but the brands ….

Puig and Estée Lauder are destroying the identity of all brands they bought , on top of all the quality is definitely not the same as it used to be.
Dries Van Noten sold majority of the brand to Puig a few years ago, and he don’t have much of a control over the brand now , if at all , they basically semi- kicked him out of his own company!!!
Same thing happened to Jo Malone, and now Tom Ford
It’s actually Puig , and Estée Lauder selling fragrances , and not Dries Van Noten Jo Malone , and in 3 years Tom Ford too , they are just using the name.
Tey ALL should’ve learned from the likes of Neela Vermeire!!!
Creativity, design are traits of Neela Vermeire herself. Big plus for her success , was having full financial, and creative control of the brand . She may not had the experience, but Neela learned the hard , and in my opinion the right way.
I’d rather buy 5 fragrances from independent brand like Neela Vermeire, than 1 from BYREDO or Tom Ford

Parfums de Marly created a special fragrance , Haltane would be great
Thank you Michelyn , Rachel , Hernando , and all the brands

While I prefer the fragrances on Hernandos list, the descriptions Rachel uses are more picturesque. Many of Rachel’s selections, I’ve never heard of. Things that caught my attention my attention from Rachel’s list:

“The comfort scent of a fresh baked loaf in the kitchen “
    “Dense, chewy barnyard oud”
And what’s so compelling about a good rice note? I must find out!
    I live in Philadelphia….should I win, I’d choose Haltane.

  • Thank You for another wonderful review. The year 2022 was rich with new releases and we got to know many masterpieces.
It was amazing to see Yloud Yloud in Rachel’s selection – this is a really original and outstanding combo of notes. The same I can say about Der Duft Canvas – the green and floral notes with hints of spiciness and darkness make it so mysterious. Also thank You for an honorable mention of Akro Ink, the vetiver & birch notes may look traditional, but Olivier Cresp’s creations turn magical on the skin. He is a talented perfumer with simple yet deep creations.
In Hernando’s choices I found some gems as well. Royal Tobacco by Cecile Zarokian, one of my favorite and much respected perfumers. Though tobacco fragrances are not my cup of tea, this creation is so well-blended. The minimalistic style of Byredo’s bottle design is hiding beautiful and exceptional fragrances as always – Ben Gorham once again surprised the world with De Los Santos, this one is philosophical, not sweet, slightly spicy, but the sillage is so elegant. Also I am happy to see Patchouli Magnetik, Madurai and Haltane, the scents are not revolutionary, but they never disappoint – those brands keep their level high with each new fragrance.
I would like to win Der Duft Canvas.
    I live in Lithuania, EU.

  • I’ll summarize the amount of pleasing to the eyes, and mind fragrance information

    Azman Killer Vavoom (Miguel Matos)
    Pure seduction in a bottle

Strangers Parfumerie Sweet Farewell (Prin Lomros):
I’d like to visit Thailand, and to try Kanom Jaak

Amouage Royal Tobacco Opus (Cécile Zarokian)
For the sole reason of Royal Tobacco being Michelyn favorite Amouage, I’ll go to my local Neiman Marcus tomorrow.
Amouage fragrances are just different. Even if you like all the notes , In my opinion you should never blind buy , without trying the fragrance you’re interested on skin. Some do smell very different on different people, when sprayed on skin .
I’m not questioning all of you , who love the fragrance, but I’d like to spray Royal Tobacco on skin . I wonder if I’ll smell the best tobacco , with resins and upscale spicy sweetness…or something different?

Kelly +Jones MEZCAL AÑEJO (Steven Claisse and Kelly Jones) 2022:
    Playful fragrance

MAISON CRIVELLI PATCHOULI MAGNETIK (Quentin Bisch.):
Admirations for Maison Crivelli , and Quentin Bisch for releasing Patchouli Magnetik , eye-opening novelty fragrance. Patchouli, lightnings, amber , rain , grey blue dark sky , vanilla … can you repeat that again please?

    MEMO PARIS MADURAI (Gaël Montero):
The fragrance is sophisticated floral, with slightly sweet and inviting drydown.
Ida is liking it a lot , I have a feeling I’ll enjoy it too.

    PARFUMS de MARLY HALTANE:
Parfums de Marly Haltane is refined transitional weather fragrance ,versatile, and easy to wear , from day time family gatherings , to going out with friends , or weddings .Long lasting fragrances are always welcome , and I think all Parfums de Marly fall in the same category , even fresher ones.
I also like the deep green color, and the contrast with the golden cap.

    TOM FORD ROSE DE CHINE:
From all best Designer Fragrance I think
    Dior 2022 releases > Chanel 2022 > Louis Vuitton 2022 > Tom Ford 2022 releases

Zoologist Sacred Scarab, from Rachel honorable mentions is resinous – boozy – sexy. Tomorrow Other than Royal Tobacco, I’ll look for Guerlain Shalimar Millesime Tonka

If lucky I’d like to win Parfums de Marly Haltane
    Thanks for the draw

Lovely choices Rachel and Hernando! ! I ADORE Rachel’s choice of Areej Le Dore Civet de Nuit. I am a huge fan of Areej Le Dore and was an instant love for me. In fact, I just purchased a full bottle today! Rachel has great taste 🙂 I also really enjoy her honorable mentions, particularly Hera and Sacred Scarab, two fragrances from my favorite perfumers.

As for Hernando’s selections, I’ve already said what I big fan of Royal Tobacco I am. But I also adore Haltane with it’s gorgeous dark green smooth oudiness and warmth.

I live in the US. I would be thrilled to win any of these but my choices would be in the following order of preference 1) Parfums de Marly Haltane 2) Hima Jimo Summer In Paro and 3) DER DUFT Canvas .

  • emorandeira says:

I would like to win Canvas by Der Duft and I live in Spain.
I have read the article and I have found very good perfumes and new ideas of perfumes that I should try.
I loved to see Killer vavoom by Azman and Miguel Matos in the Rachel’s selection and also is nice to see Jorum Studio and Strangers Parfumerie in her list.
In Hernando’s list I live Rose de chine by Tom Ford, the Crivelli’s patchouli and It is also nice to see that he has a space for the Designer Fragrances.
I Hope that the THREE KINGS bring the bottle of Canvas to me tomorrow!

    Greetings everyone from rainy Paris
Let’s see what Ms Watson and Mr Courtright best of the best for 2022 are

    Ms Watson
    1.Anatole Lebreton Brioche (Anatole Lebreton):
I wanted to try the pastry like Brioche, but not only is discontinued, I found out Anatole Lebreton in France are available only in Lyon and Strasbourg
    2.Azman Killer Vavoom (Miguel Matos)
Azman fragrances are one of the best new discoveries i made.Deep and rich floral chocolate
    3.Der Duft Canvas (Freddie Albrighton):
The brand is not available in France
4.Hima Jomo Summer in Paro (Delphine Thierry)
    Tibet, Ayurveda, honey
5.Strangers Parfumerie Sweet Farewell (Prin Lomros):
I don’t know Sweet Farewell, Strangers Parfumerie, or ever eaten Kanom Jaak, but rise gourmand?
Unfortunately Strangers Parfumerie do not have points of sale in France. I’ll message Mr Lomros just in case, because Sweet Farewell sounds great.
6.Shalimar Millesime Tonka I bought instantly the second I smelled it.

    Mr Courtright
Fun fact is in Paris MEMO PARIS and Parfums de Marly boutiques are literally right next to each other, door to door . MEMO boutique is on 24 rue Cambon, and Parfums de Marly on 26 rue Cambon. BYREDO boutique is just a few minutes away, and Maison Crivelli you can try on walking distance too at Galeries Lafayette Champs-Elysées. From their website, I saw Hima Jomo boutique is also on walking distance, I’ll pay them a visit

7.Amouage Royal Tobacco Opus XIV (Cécile Zarokian):
Phenomenal experience, thick dark tobacco , but I wonder why Mrs Courtright didn’t say anything about the strong liquorice aroma in Royal Tobacco?
    8. Kelly +Jones MEZCAL AÑEJO (Steven Claisse and Kelly Jones) 2022:
I wish it was available in France
    9. MAISON CRIVELLI PATCHOULI MAGNETIK (Quentin Bisch.):
I’ve smelled the white bottle, with white label Maison Crivelli fragrances, and i bought Iris Malikhân from Galeries Lafayette Champs-Elysées , the newer red bottle fragrances I will try soon. I need to know how patchouli plantation during rainstorm smells.
    10.MEMO PARIS MADURAI (Gaël Montero):
    Bubblegum with peach and jasmine
    11. PARFUMS de MARLY HALTANE:
I’ve been to Paris boutique at 26 rue Cambon multiple times, last time to buy a new bottle of Habdan. Such a well decorated place, with like a mini Versailles atmosphere.
You can’t miss it, the big white horse statue will great you ,if you walk on Cambon, the famous fragrance street of Paris.
I don’t know how Haltane smells on Mr Courtright skin, but it’s not the way it smells on mine, more sweet and woody.
    12. TOM FORD ROSE DE CHINE:
With the recent changes in the ownership of the brand, I will no longer buy Tom Ford fragrances. Mr Courtright had his opinion , I have mine.
To me it’s not just the smell , I need to know the story , and who stays behind the brand I’m buying from.
From a jeweler perspective, at the moment Tom Ford fragrances are like lab-grown diamonds, they may look like the real thing, to have the same carat , purity and so on , but at the end they are just not real.
    Hima Jomo Summer in Paro
Thank you, American living in Paris France

  • Two more excellent lists! It’s been such fun reading these end of year award lists, even if I haven’t personally tried most of the scents (because let’s be honest – the great scent bench is deep this year). Really happy to see more natural perfume brands here in Rachel’s list. I have yet to try anything by Hima Jomo but seeing their inclusion on multiple lists (and reading the previous review of Autumn in Lhoka) really sparks my interest. I was unfamiliar with Delphine Thierry’s other brand Floratropia until now but Le Fleu sounds like a wonderful warming fragrance.
If selected for this giveaway, I’d love to try Summer in Paro! Best wishes from the US.

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’d like to try all of the fragrances which Rachel and Hernando mentioned in this review, and I appreciate learning more about them. The one I’d like to try the most is Masque Milano’s “Sleight of Fern”. I live in the U.S.A. For the giveaway, I’d like to win “Summer in Paro”.

  • As a whole what impresses me in the most from Rachel and Hernando picks

    Anatole Lebreton Brioche (Anatole Lebreton):
Brioche in a bottle, limited edition and no longer available

    Azman Killer Vavoom (Miguel Matos)
All the attention AZMAN fragrances do get is justified, no wonder i had to wait for weeks to get the sample set, it was out of stock
Interesting how ,again we partially agree about AZMAN Killer Vavoom , the prunes and chocolate are so beautiful, the iris too ,but unlike me , both Michelyn , Karl ,and now even Rachel
never said anything about the strong boozy feel i get from Killer Vavoom.

    Der Duft Canvas (Freddie Albrighton):
With so many Cafleurebon contributors liking it, I decided to sample the fragrance

Hima Jomo Summer in Paro (Delphine Thierry):
How exactly typical summer scent in Tibet smells?

Jorum Studio Pony Boy (Euan McCall)
    Hello Scotland

Strangers Parfumerie Sweet Farewell (Prin Lomros):
I love Thai cuisine, and gourmands

Milleslim Tonka is either great, or it’s overhyped, because still is out of stock

Royal Tobacco Amouage ( Cécile Zarokian )
My opinion is basically the same as Karl Topham, and Hernando. Unlike Michelyn, and Michael Devine , we don’t smell much licorice.
My favorite brand and upscale fragrance. In Royal Tobacco i see some strong One Thousand and One Nights , and Scheherazade connections. The resinous base, and the plum, together with the tobacco are the other most interesting aspects of the fragrance. To me the unexpected sweetness comes more from the plum. My favorite Amouage is still Jubilation XXV , but Royal Tobacco is up there too .

    BYREDO DE LOS SANTOS:
I still have Bal d’Afrique old bottle , Los Santos did not impressed me much. What actually striked me in regards of Byredo, are all 5 fragrances from Perfume Extract line . Quality is on a completely different level, compared to everything else from Byredo.

DS & DURGA BISTRO WATERS (David Seth Moltz)
All Ds and Durga fragrances I’ve tried are nice, but nothing more.

Kelly +Jones MEZCAL AÑEJO (Steven Claisse and Kelly Jones) 2022:
I’m always looking for a new cocktail

MAISON CRIVELLI PATCHOULI MAGNETIK (Quentin Bisch.):
When I read Quentin Bisch story how he made , inspired by a motorcycle ride into a patchouli field, during rainstorm, the ACDC “Thunder” song immediately came to mind.
In Patchouli Magnetik i like how Quentin Bisch made one avant-garde patchouli

    MEMO PARIS MADURAI (Gaël Montero):
Madurai is bright, fresh and energetic, up to date floral fruity bouquet, some greenness, tartness , and sensual suede accord, it sounds so pleasing.

    PARFUMS de MARLY HALTANE:
Just WOW at the level of complexity , sweet, spicy , woody . I like there’s nothing overbearing, but the blend is really smooth. What surprised me is that Hernando do not smell any sweetness in Haltane

SANA JARDIN VENUS OF VERBENA (Carlos Benaim):
    Formal occasions friendly fragrance

    TOM FORD ROSE DE CHINE:
The 3 new roses from Tom Ford did not impressed me, I’m actually looking for one of the biggest buzzes lately, the just released Cherry Smoke.
I work in marketing, and advertising sphere for a long time, and I’m regularly invited to speak on conferences, and by prestigious University programs for seminars, and lectures in front of students in the area. According to what I read, in 3 years he’ll have no ties with the brand at all , he won’t stay there as creative director, in the bord of directors, or even as a share holder?!?
I do strongly believe, not in the near future, but in long term Tom Ford himself 100% leaving Tom Ford will hurt the brand badly. It’s exactly what happened with Jo Malone , a lot of people completely stopped buying Jo Malone fragrances , and why wouldn’t they? The perfumer and creator Jo Malone has no ties with the brand Jo Malone for years, they even suited her a couple of times, at least according to the UK press.

Love both of my Delina bottles , I also bought twice Byerley as a gift for dad’s birthdays, and he absolutely loves it.Haltane i believe is spontaneous , and unpredictable , fragrance i’d absolutely love to win.
Thank you for the time , and effort, and for the opportunity
