Tonatto Profumi Sandalo Per Teti Review + Steeped Tea Draw

I have written before of my admiration for Tonatto Profumi’s way with flowers. This line produces high-quality fragrances of uncluttered chic and has created some of the freshest, life-like blossoms around. But the woods fragrances are equally fine. Creative director and current nose Diletta Tonatto created the caressing, contemplative PaloSanto, which was one of my favourite perfumes of 2018. But nearly 20 years ago, Tonatto, under the aegis of founder, produced another singularly lovely woods fragrance. Tonatto Profumi Sandalo Per Teti (2000) established that this most elegant of Italian houses can build a perfume around any note with top-flight ingredients and great finesse. Don’t let the name trick you into thinking this is the equivalent of a wood soliflore; Sandalo Per Teti is as much a tea fragrance as it is sandalwood: aromatic, spiked with citrus, with spicy and smoky facets. Instead of heading straight into the woods, Sandalo Per Teti stops by a tea party in a citrus grove for a leisurely cuppa.

The opening reminds me once again of how realistic Tonatto’s renderings of key notes are. It starts with a realistic tickle of orange rind, aromatic and bitter, joined by tart lemon juice that smells as if you just squeezed the fruit in your hand. Black tea, astringent and peppery, weaves seamlessly into the citrus until Sandalo per Teti transforms from the parched smell of tea leaves into a steepy, smoky brew of Assam, spiked with zingy fruit.

I often think that sandalwood smells like a cross between an emery board and the mellow, solemn redolence of old wood. Here, that dual quality is on full display as the sandalwood comes forward in all its violin scratchy-smoothness before it melds with tea and citrus. The acerbic perfume of black tea and dense sandalwood create an inspired partnership that is pungent, sprightly, and beautifully balanced. Absolutely stylish, Sandalo Per Teti is one of those rare fragrances that smells terrific in all weathers, on anyone. With its spare, chic beauty and assertive hits of citrus and tea, Tonatto Profumi Sandalo Per Teti is one of my very favourite sandalwood perfumes. Give it a chance and it might well become one of yours.

Notes: Orange, Amalfi lemon, sandalwood, black tea, woody notes, lavender.

The combination of sandalwood, tea, and citrus really intrigues me–they seem like natural pairings, and I love how it is described here as sounding dry, woody, aromatic, and yet still juicy in the opening. The phrase “violin-scratchy smoothness) is just beautiful! Thanks so much for this draw. I live in the US.

  • This one sounds really good. I love sandalwood, and the combination of tea and sandalwood – what is it about the words “pungent” and “sprightly” that sound so appealing! I am in the US.

  • I admire CaFleureBon’s way with editing the articles, always adding photographs that immerse the reader in the story of the reviewed parfume. Thank you for the chance of trying a new perfume house.

  • I’ve always wanted to try something from Tonatto profumi but didn’t had the chance yet. I love the black tea note a lot and mixed with sandalwood and amalfi lemon must be really nice. Thanks for the chance, i am in the EU.

  • I agree sandalwood can smell quite woody in some compositions. Tonatto Sandalo seems like a sandalwood for all seasons as the article notes. It has notes like tea that I enjoy. I have had Tonatto Albi for a number of years now. I am in US

  • Citruses, sandalwood and tea combined with lavender and woods sounds like great mix. I like that it’s recommended for year round use. This brand is a new Italian perfume house to me. Thanks for the introduction and the opportunity to sniff! USA

I love Sandalwood!!! Followed by incense.
Yes, it can get cloying in hot humid weather so this version with citrus sounds fascinating.

    In UK.

  • This fragrance sounds very interesting, the tea, orange bitter, lemon, sandalwood and pepper. This makes it appeal to me the most “a tea fragrance as it is sandalwood: aromatic, spiked with citrus, with spicy and smoky facets. Instead of heading straight into the woods, Sandalo Per Teti stops by a tea party in a citrus grove for a leisurely cuppa.” Lauryn wrote a great review! I live in USA!

  • I love a dark black tea scent and am always on the look out for a new one. The fact that this combines tea with sandalwood (a favorite of mine) makes it even more alluring. Thanks for the wonderful review. I live in the US.

  • The longer I engage with niche and artistic fragrances, the more I appreciate those well done all-rounder, this one makes me curious. I cannot even decide if this would be for the wife (sandalwood) or me (tea), so we would love to try this! Please let me win to Germany.

Sandalwood is one of my favorite notes and mixed with black tea and citrus sounds very appealing; considering my preferred teas are Earl Grey (citrus) and Lapsang Souchong (smoky). I have not tried anything from this perfume house, so I really appreciate the opportunity. USA.

  • Imposible to resist. I love the notes and if it is “one of those rare fragrances that smells terrific in all weathers, on anyone”, then even better 🙂
