Tauer Perfumes Les Annees 25 ~ New Perfume Review + Modern Flapper Draw

Inspired by the Parisian “Exposition des arts décoratifs” (from which was derived the term ‘Art Deco’) in 1925, Andy Tauer of Tauer Perfumes has created an extraordinary new perfume; Les Annees 25. Released as a limited edition of approximately 500 bottles, Tauer Perfumes Les Annees 25 is an Eau de Parfum fragrant glance back to the past while remaining firmly rooted in the present. Andy Tauer is quite fond of Art Deco design and wanted to create a scent that honored the perfumes of that period, but with his own inimitable contemporary flair; thus the genesis of what Tauer describes as a “modern vintage fragrance.”

Looking back at the history of the 1925 Paris Exposition I was delighted to discover that 1925 saw the release of both Shalimar and Gardenia in Extrait strength by Guerlain, and Knize Ten EdT, all three heavy-hitters and still in production today albeit reformulated. The previous year 1924 saw the release of Lanvin’s My Sin followed by Arpege in 1927. I mention all these perfumes because they provide an olfactive context of the era, and I happen to love them all.

Tauer Perfumes Les Annees 25 arrives in the familiar Tauer polygon/pentagon shaped bottle, itself a geometric testament to the lasting durability of Art Deco line and form. TheTauer bottles always feel substantial in hand, and the deep sapphire-blue glass color is embellished on the front with a swirling triple line design; an added touch of Art Deco design.

Opening with a tart Hesperidic citrus blast shot through with a whip-crack sweet sting of ginger, the immediate effect is that of discovering a pristine unopened bottle of vintage perfume, bright and frothy and light. Very quickly the iris takes center stage, with the earthy and root-like notes softened and sweetened by lashings of rose, and a creamy undertone of resinous benzoin. The tonka and vanilla add an almost gourmand feeling, but kept in check with the hint of salty and fusty ambergris. You might imagine Tauer Perfumes Les Annees 25 as something heavy and oriental in feeling and there is in fact a sense of depth to Les Annees 25, but thanks to Mr. Tauer’s deft touch and blending expertise, this is perfume as seen through a contemporary panel of ultra sheer linen or silk; diffuse, and shot through with beams of light. It is at once enveloping and spacious, and enchantingly beautiful. Les Années 25 may very well be one of my all time favorite perfumes from Andy Tauer. Bravo!

Notes: Bergamot, petit grain, orange oil, Indian ginger, Bulgarian rose, iris, benzoin, oakmoss, tonka, sandalwood, ambergris, musk, patchouli, vanilla.

Disclosure: The perfume and opinions are my own.

  • You had me at “the iris takes center stage, with the earthy and root-like notes softened and sweetened by lashings of rose, and a creamy undertone of resinous benzoin”. I love many of Andy’s perfumes including Lonesome Rider, Reverie au Jardin, PHI une Rose de Kandahar, Lonestar Memories, L’Air du Desert Marocain. Would love to try this….thanks for the draw!

  • I’m imagining a sweet & salty snack……yum! Thanks for the opportunity to sniff, I’m in the USA.

Iris, rose, ambergris… Andy Tauer is a perfume master and all his creations are memorable. No doubt Les Annees is also fabulous. All the Tauers I have tried are favorites, but Phi Un Rose de Kandahar is the most beautiful one. Thanks for the draw.

I enjoyed the tie-in to the perfumes in 1925! I’m excited for this one both classic and contemporary. I was all in after reading “the iris takes center stage, with the earthy and root-like notes softened and sweetened by lashings of rose, and a creamy undertone of resinous benzoin. The tonka and vanilla add an almost gourmand feeling, but kept in check with the hint of salty and fusty ambergris.” The notes are wonderful in this one. I am a fan of Andy Tauer’s L’Air du Desert Marocain and Rose de Kandahar. I live in the US and thanks for the draw! 🙂

The description sounds pretty modern, but the reviewer keeps mentioning it has an old-school feel to it. Sounds interesting.
My fav is probably Lair du desert marocain.

  • I’m Delighted to be able to try Andy Tauer’s scent for the first time. I have my eye on him! I love Robert Hermann’s amazing review on this new release, especially it being a vintage inspired scent.

I’m curious to try this. I just finished my second sample of Shalimar and still don’t love it. I hope that Andy can tweet this old school type fragrance for the modern times. My favorites from Andy are Rose Incense, Patchouli Flash, and Rose Flash. I love the bottles. Dark, but you can still see how much is left. Thanks for the chance! USA.

  • I love spicy rose fragrances and have always wanted to try a Tauer fragrance. I loved this review and would love to win a sample!

Well have not got my nose on this fragrance, I think it will open with this big citrus opening with the Bergamot and the orange oil, then the iris takes over will the rose in background. With the heart notes coming though with the sandalwood, ambergris. Then the tonka and vanilla adding some sweetness to the mix .

  • I like the citrus opening with a bit of ginger and the other notes as well.
Haven’t tried a Tauer fragrance yet but have been hearing great things about him and his fragrances. Would like to try this. Thanks

I loved the description of the feeling of locating an unopened bottle of vintage perfume. It can be such a hit or miss hobby, collecting those vintages, but finding a pristine one with all those strange animalic notes, heavy iris, etc is like stepping into a time machine! Loved the description of “salty and fusty” ambregris too! I love Tauer and am a huge fan of many of his scents–Une Rose Chypree, LDDM, Carillon (to smell not to wear!), and Zeta to name a few. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US.

I love the art deco period. It’s so glamorous. The ginger note sounds like something I would definitely love to wear. Ginger is indeed like a whip-crack.
I love Hyacinth and a Mechanic. I also love Andy Tauer’s instagram and his blog.

  • I would be thrilled to try a decant of this limited edition by Andy Tauer as one of his previous limited editions is my favorite by him, PHI Une Rose de Kandahar. Robert H’s description of the citrus blast followed by ginger at the outset sound fantastic. I’m in the U.S., thanks for the draw!

  • I enjoyed the historical context given here. It prompts me to imagine Les Années 25 as perfumed time travel, a mix of then and now, here and there, wonderfully transporting. I sampled the new scent today. The ginger and pepper notes are a celebration. The iris and florals brought Vol de Nuit to mind. The two perfumes are not the same scent at all, rather both have the feeling of being finely crafted, making me feel well put together when I wear them.

I adore L’Air du Désert Marocain. My first sniff was a revelation. It has purity, and though it does not shout, its power is undeniable. Mr Tauer’s perfumes truly are olfactory sculpture. Thank you to Messrs Hermann and Nir for generously sharing Les Années 25 with CaFleureBon readers.

  • Andy Tauer is my favorite perfumer. The fact of how involved he is in his perfume. From creation, to bottling, to signing each one. He is definitely an artist who is in it for the love and not the quick dollar. L’air du Desert is probably my most favorite perfume. It is hard for me to sample niche fragrances where I live, I ordered dozens and dozens of samples. Une Rose Chypree and L’air du Desert were some of the Tauer samples I received in those hauls. Out of all the samples, L’air du Desrt, jumped out among the rest. I have recently been fortunate enough to try L’oud by Mr. Tauer. It is also a spectacular fragrance. Very dark, rich, dry, warm, oud fragrance. That has this spectacular underlying Tauer DNA that makes it pleasantly wearable. This was a great read, I wouldn’t have expected this to be a heavy scent, surprised. Hopefully I can pickup one of those 500 bottles. Best of luck Mr. Tauer!

  • well, I might have missed the draw, but the review was fabulous, and as soon as I saw petitgrain, bergamot and orange oil, I knew I would love to try it, especially with the other notes. I have not tried any Tauer perfumes, but have wanted to try L’Air du desert marocain….thank you for sharing a sample with us!
