Stop and Smell the Rose Perfumes + A Dozen Roses for Valentine’s Day Draw

Cleopatra Sir Lawrence Alma Tadema (1836-1912)

Roses have been used for perfumery for thousands of years and  is the flower most associated with romance and seduction. Cleopatra famously carpeted her boudoir with rose petals while entertaining Marc Antony, so he would always think of the Egyptian Queen anytime, anywhere he smelled a rose. There is a rose fragrance for everyone…vintage, gourmand, photorealistic, soliflore, fruity, modern, spicy, sophisticated, jammy, oudy, chypre, Oriental and downright dirty. In honor of Valentine’s Day, the ÇaFleureBon team chose the rose perfumes that are closest to our hearts. It’s time to Stop and Smell the Rose Perfumes.

Lady Dacre 1633,  Sir Anthony Van Dyck

Rose Etoile de Hollande, 2012 is the culmination of Mona di Orio’s study of a special Rose that climbed the walls of Maison Sainte Blanche in Cabris, France. A defining release after her loss to the perfume world. A seminal work imparted in her Nombre d’Or Collection, this Rose is as effervescent and as alluring as a Rose can get.  From virginal sweetness to carnal abandonment, this is an unavoidable seduction.  My face is buried within the petals of one flower. Fresh verdancy of rosebud on the opening, elevated high by a peach note that catches me completely off guard, I am intrigued. There is a time lapse quality, the Bud’s unfolding mirroring the perfumes evolution on flesh.  I must remain with my nose firmly welded to my wrist so as not to miss a moment. Powdery and creamy notes give the sense of never being able to inhale enough of this sublime addiction. Amongst the  glorious effusiveness of the full blown Rose’s, full of spicy attraction, my senses are eventually returned to the image of crystal candlesticks and discarded silk.-Contributor Danu Seith-Fyr

Marc Chagall. Bouquet with Flying Lovers Bouquet with Flying Lovers c.1934-47

Amongst my friends in the fragrance community, I’m known to be a charter member of “Rose Ho’s Anonymous” a non-existent group of rose perfume lovers. I probably have more rose-centric scents than any other, and around Valentine’s Day they get a lot of play. Here are two of my favorites:

If you haven’t had the opportunity of trying Christi Meshell of House of Matriarch’s’s spectacular ode to the blue rose, you’re in for a real treat. Kazimi (a medieval astrological term meaning “in the heart”) was voted one of Cafleurebon’s Best of 2016, and is a depth-plundering dive into the liquid pool of complex Oriental rose fragrances; deep and spicy with wood notes, marine saltiness, green and bitter moss and above all rose and lots of it. Five different rose accords make this one of Christi’s finest, and that’s saying a lot for a line that produces one spectacular natural scent after another. Kazimi is perfect for ending a night of love in the best possible déshabillé way!

Aether Arts Ginger Rose Perfume (Amber Jobin) 2014: Amber Jobin, 2014 Art & Olfaction Winner and  founder of Aether Arts is one of my favorite indie perfumers who has created perfumes that I haves reviewed and raved about (Touchstone from the 2017 Cafleurebon “Talisman” project, Pince-Nez, and Perfume 420), but Ginger Rose, another spicy and rose-centric perfume is one that is very dear to my heart. I love vintage perfumes and like a blast from the past, Ginger Rose with its bubbly, dusty opening of aldehydes is a tribute to the great florientals of the 40’s and 50’s made contemporary and “Au Courant” for a new generation. I love ginger as a note, and combined with rose, orris, jasmine, and carnation, Ginger Rose Perfume becomes nothing short of a floral wonder. The structure is beautifully supported by frankincense, cool sandalwood, and the meaty and furry vibe of beeswax and indoles, creating another Aether Arts slice of perfection that straddles generations. Magnificent! –Robert Herrmann-Senior Editor

Vintage  Ad  Coty La Rose Jacqueminot

Coty La Rose Jacqueminot (1904, 1986, 2004):The deep red rose 'Général Jacqueminot' was the prototype of our long stemmed florists' roses and ancestor of many of today's modern reds. The amateur French hybridizer Roussel created this extremely fragrant Centifolia Hybrid Perpetual in 1853 and named it in honor of the Napoleonic General Jean François Jacqueminot (1787 – 1865). For over fifty years 'Général Jacqueminot' remained the world's most popular rose. In 1904 -1906 François Coty launched a perfume version of the flower – La Rose Jacqueminot, based not only on the specific fragrance of the 'Général Jacqueminot' rose, but also on a bouquet of other Centifolia hybrids, Damasks and Tea Roses. This heady garland was accented with aldehydes and orange blossoms, spiced with nutmeg, cardamom and clove supported by iris, violet, ylang ylang and jasmine, and grounded in oakmoss, ambergris, sandalwood and musk. I have fading memories of the original but I am very familiar with the 1986 re-release of La Rose Jacqueminot. Even though the newer version was revised for 1980's tastes (and is less full-bodied and romantic than its predecessor) it is still an amazing fragrance. In 2004 Coty re-created a very limited edition of the original La Rose Jacqueminot, which is one of my most coveted of rose perfumes.

Is it possible to breathe new life into an old rose? In 2012, with the creation of Olympic Orchids Ballets Rouges, 2 x Art and Olfaction Winner Ellen Covey did just that, imprinting her olfactory signature on a familiar genre and infusing the profile of the rose chypre with a new depth and 21st century unisex vibe. To accomplish this Dr. Covey created her own vintage style rose accord placing it at the heart of a classic chypre (bergamot, aldehydes, florals, patchouli, oakmoss and musk). The new, old-rose accord, along with rose de mai absolute and ylang- ylang fill the fragrance with luscious warmth. Red thyme and mandarin add fresh herbal fruitiness to the opening while labdanum suffuses the entire composition with a smooth darkness and depth that give Ballets Rouges a velvety quality all its own. Ballets Rouges is, for me, much drier and woodier than a traditional rose chypre and exemplifies my roseate ideal of rose perfumes, a perfect neo-romantic rose. Gail Gross – Senior Editor

Last weekend I was in my grandparent’s garden when my sister asked if I could make her a perfume if we picked the roses. She was astounded when I explained it would take almost half a ton of rose petals to make a small amount of extract. I didn’t get into the detail of the expertise required (which I don’t have) to extract the fragrance. Made up of more than 300 odorous molecules, the fragrance of a rose is complex and perfumes that are rich in natural rose essential oil or rose absolute are still a true luxury. One of my favourite rose perfumes is 2008’s Lyric Man by Amouage. Lyric Man opens with the angular scent of rose oil. This is enhanced with a hint of green galbanum. As the fragrance unfolds the sweet scent of rose absolute blooms with accents of lychee and Turkish delight. Vanilla, spicy saffron and sandalwood provide a warm, luxurious backdrop. Amouage’s Creative Director Christopher Chong and perfumer Daniel Visentin have created the perfect ode to roses.– Guest Contributor  Clayton Ilolahia of What Men Should Smell Like

Coco Rocha editorial for L’Officiel Italia

Rose Perfumes make up a substantial portion of my fragrance collection, and even though it is hopelessly cliché, I love to wear rose perfumes on Valentine's Day. With dozens of beauties to choose from, I have never felt the need to tie myself down to any one in particular, but over the last year or so, I seem to have wandered in to the once unimaginable status of fragrance monogamy with Parfums M Micallef Rose Extreme. Released in 2013 and signed by perfumers Geoffrey Nejman and Jean-Claude Astier, Rose Extreme is an exquisite rose essence, showcased in a flawless setting of succulent peaches and velvety, apricot-laden osmanthus. Silken ribbons of iris are woven into this opulent bouquet, leaving whispers of powder in their wake and adding a great deal of chic elegance to the fragrance. This gorgeous, rosy elixir is infused with the incomparable warmth that makes all M Micallef fragrances seemingly meld perfectly into your skin.  As a very wise man once wrote "I have found the one my soul loves"  I feel like the most beautiful woman in the world when I wear Rose Extreme. – Tammy Schuster, Sr. Contributor

Tom Ford Noir De Noir Review | Favorite Fragrance For Valentine's Day? ❤️❤️❤️

Miller Harris Rose en Noir and Photo by Bekah Jenkins for Fashion Canada, Oct 2012

Miller Harris Rose en Noir (2006): Fragrant, dark magenta roses clambered up the side of the house I grew up in, but never thought I’d find their heartbreaking beauty realistically captured in a perfume – let alone one with a dark sense of humour and affection for raspberry tart. Miller Harris’ gorgeous, brooding Rose en Noir would qualify as a goth perfume if it wasn’t for a cheeky, juicy raspberry that smiles its way right through the middle. This is Morticia Adams one moment – all lush dark petals, turned earth patchouli and smoky tobacco – and then Wednesday playing at afternoon tea with raspberries, pepper and bitter oranges to serve to her headless Marie Antoinette doll. Darkly naughty, elegantly lovely, unique; Rose en Noir is my favourite rose perfume of all time.-Lauryn Beer, Senior Editor

Maria Callas, late 1950s

Neela Vermeire Creations 2014 release (Le Bertrand Duchaufour) Mohur Extrait is among the finest rose perfumes one may ever encounter. Nestled within its exquisite wine-hued columnar flacon, Mohur Extrait embodies a celestial union of East meets West. While it echoes the Mughal Empire's Mohur edp, my first NVC love among Art and Olfaction 2014 winner Neela Vermeire's fragrances (exhibited in NYC at Elements Showcase years ago) – the extrait possesses an intensity and depth which smells even richer, more enigmatic than its marvelous predecessor. Roses and oud take on a different visage in extreme concentration: they are flanked by piquant spices, silvery tones of iris, carrot seed and ambrette, cooing woods and milky almond, vestiges of glove leather, violets, jasmine and deeply resinous elements. This is a memorable marriage both classically Neela and undeniably Duchaufour which performs like a champion in any climate. Wear it and leave a trail of broken hearts in your wake.

Roses perfumes are among my best-beloveds; picking only two rose-centric fragrances is agony (it's precisely like asking a singer to choose a favorite song). Give me veracity or give me nowt. Eau de Plasticky Dolls' Heads I leave to others. I fell in love with 2010’s Maison Francis Kurkdjian's Absolue Pour le Soir the moment I set nostrils upon it: it coiled itself about me with unmistakably serpentine decadence. Rose honey, cumin overdose and a plethora of spices seduced me, sultry woods and resins only upped the ante. Even dabbed it radiates off my skin with a dulcet, throaty growl – bridging the floriental and animalic with sophisticated élan. It's an absolutely (sic) Ida perfume. If you desire girly froufrou, look elsewhere – this is for adults only. –Ida Meister, Senior Editor

Elizabeth Taylor early 1950s promo photo

One of the first niche rose fragrances I bought was Rose Ta'if composed Geza Schoen for Ormonde Jayne. It was released in 2004 and only available at the shop in London. Creative Director and founder Linda Pilkington kindly sent me a sample for an article I was writing at the time, and from first sniff I was and still am smitten. I know it is ridiculous to think that this is more a brunette's perfume than a blonde's and I am sure going to hear it from our blonde readers (remember the hair color you were born with first), but the warm, voluptuous quality of this amber tinged rose is more Dame Elizabeth Taylor than Princess Grace Kelly. Tumultuous and temperamental, with an edgy combination of spicy saffron and sweet dates afloat a orange blossom scented sea, Rose Ta'if is a "dessert rose" not a desert rose. If you want to blend in at a party, this is not the perfume to wear…it is audacious, opulent and sweeps into a room like the star it is.-Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief

  • Wow, what an amazing list! Most of them I have never tried. I think my personal rose is Black Aoud from Montale. My wife’s favorite is definitely Andy Tauer’s Rose Chyprée; she has drained at least three bottles.

Many thanks to all the perfumers and companies who contributed to the draw! I think Mohur is at the top of my list, but am also interested in Rose Étoile d’Hollande, Rose Ta’if, Epic Man, and Kazimi.

  • I have not tried any from the list, but those all sounds great.

Noir de Noir is stunning. I usually can’t pull off patchouli but with this something magical happens on my skin. Roses are polarizing and it is amazing how some smell beautiful and others are instant turn-offs.

My choices: Etoile de Hollande and Lyric Man (for my Valentine)

Thank you for this wonderful giveaway!

  • What an amazing line up and generous draw!

I am a big fan of Tauer’s roses: Rose Chypree, incense Rose. And Sonoma Scent Studio Rose Volupte.

    I am most interested in:
    Mohur
    Ta’if
    rose extreme
    Ballers rouges

  • My favourite rose fragrance for men has to be Kurkdjian’s masterpiece: Lumiere Noire pour Homme. Poetry in a bottle!

I am from Europe and I would love to win Mona’s Rose Etoile de Hollande or Ta’if from Ormonde Jayne.

    Thank you!

  • Amouage Lyric Man is my favorite Rose scent. I would love to win the following.

As I’ve just developed a real interest in fragrances, at the age of 25, my collection is almost non-existent. The only thing I currently own is Si by Giorgio Armani which was gifted to me this past Christmas after I went through countless test sprays at a department store to find a perfume I liked. One of the middle notes is rose de mai, which really stands out on me. I like this perfume, but I don’t think it’s THE perfume for me. I would love to try other rose scents! I’m from Louisiana, USA but I am currently residing in Melbourne, Australia. For the sake of this giveaway, if I can, I’ll use my Australian address as I’m not really interested in Lyric Man. I would be happy to win any of the perfumes offered, solely because it will give me more insight into the fragrance world! The ones that peak my interest are Rose Etoile de Hollande, Ta’if, and Ballets Rouges. xx

  • I absolutely love rose perfumes! What an exciting draw. I am most interested in:
    Mohur,
    Kazimi and
    Rose Extreme.
    I live in the US.

  • I love roses and rose perfumes are one of my favorite floral fragrances and I am always on the lookout for more. The Tom Ford Noir de Noir interests me quite a bit especially since I heard it has a goth aspect to it. Compliments are nice too.

I would most like to win:
The House of Matriarch 15 ml of Kazimi or
Neela Vermeire for 2 x8 ml Mohur Extrait

I have discovered many rose fragrances over the years. Some of those that have really impressed me are Amouage Lyric Woman, Shiseido Nombre Noir, Azzaro Acteur, Gucci L’Arte de Gucci, Stella by Stella McCartney, MFK Satin Mood, Tom Ford Noir de Noir, and Gucci No. 3. My choices for this draw will be:

    Ormonde Jayne Taif
Mona Di Orio Rose Etoile de Hollande
    Amouage Lyric Man

    I am in the US.

  • Another fantastic draw! I used to dislike a lot the note of rose in the past. Now it is one of my favourite :)) one personal rose favourite is more than words Xerjoff.
    My choices:
    Ormonde Jayne – Taif
Mona di Orio – rose etoile
    House of matriarch – Kazimi
    M.micallef – Rose extreme
I live in the EU, thanks for the draw.

  • The scent of real roses is such a complex set of fragrances– some are jammy raspberry and deep, some are spicy and dark, or spicy and lemony-soapy, and my favorites are peachy or reminiscent of the headspace of an etrog. It’s hard to find a rose perfume that comes anywhere near that. In general the aldehydes and oakmoss of vintage brews don’t wear well on me, but naturals also don’t quite make it.

This is a great set of reviews! Thank you for the writing and giveaway.

So many of these appeal to me. Rose Etoile de Hollande reminds me of a painting I saw, maybe at the Gardner museum, that has the most beautifully rendered lady’s hand with a rose. I wonder if that one or Rose Extreme would capture the feeling of my favorite peachy rose.

I already love OJ so reading about Ta’if was fun and I am quite interested! I kinda know what you mean about voluptuous brunettes …
Rose en Noir was new to me but you had me at Morticia and Wednesday Addams.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian’s Absolue Pour le Soir never struck me as a rose scent, I tried it a couple times and it seemed like a powdery/animalic honey and cumin, with a kind of naughty vintage Bal a Versailles vibe. But there was a floral component to it now that I’m thinking about it, I just never identified it…

    My top choices:

    1.Kazimi
    2.Mohur
    3.Rose Extreme
    4.Tom Ford Noir de Noir
    5.Rose Etoile de Hollande
    6.Lyric Man
    7.Ta’if

  • Among the rose perfumes mentioned in this wonderful post, I’ve smelled Mohur (so gorgeous), Lyric Man (quite nice) and Rose Jacqueminot (smelled the recreated version at Osmothèque, it’s so good!).
I love rose in perfumes. Some of my favourites are the aforementioned Mohur, YSL Rive Gauche, Nicolai’s Rose Royale, Tauer Rose Flash and Guerlain Nahéma (very disappointed in the longevity of the current EDP though).
Thanks so much for the giveaways. My choice will be Ormonde Jayne Ta’if, Olympic Orchid Ballets Rouges and House of Matriarch Kazimi.

  • Rose has to be one of the most versatile floral notes in perfumery. Sensual and mysterious…and yet, at the same time, I can understand why some people may be turned away by the notes. I must admit, at first when I tried a few designer fragrances with Rose (e.g. Burberry’s Brit) I was a bit underwhelmed. But when I tried Chanel’s Egoiste and Cartier’s Declaration d’Un Soir, I began to warm up and appreciate the note more and more. Thanks for hosting this giveaway. The fragrances that appeal to me the most include:

    1. Amouage’s Lyric Man (50ml)
    2. Ta’if (50ml)
    3. Kazimi (15ml)
    4. Rose Etoile de Hollande (75ml)

Again, thanks to everyone for hosting this giveaway. I am currently in Connecticut. Best of luck to everyone, cheers.

  • I quite dislike Noir de Noir – like most of the other Tom Ford fragrances, excepting the hélas discontinued Sahara Noir – but love Mohur (I don’t know however the Extrait version) and Rose Étoile de Hollande (I don’t know if the formulation in the new bottle is still the same as the one in the old flacon – it is not the case for Vanille, for instance, which is now diluted).

For the time being, Le Mat and Une Rose chyprée are my favorite roses.

    My choices would be :
    – Mona di Orio – Rose étoile de Hollande
    – Neela Vermeire Créations – Mohur Extrait
    – Olympic Orchids – Ballets Rouges

    I live in the EU.

  • Although I’d love to win the Lyric Man, my favorite rose listed here is Noir de Noir.
Taif sounds great, since I do have some Taif rose attar directly from Taif and love it.
In general, my favorite rose scent is probably Declaration Dun Soir.
    I’m in Chicago IL

  • My favorite rose dominant fragrances are Noir De Noir, MFK Oud Satin Mood Extrait and lyric man. I would love to win the first two that I mentioned. I live in Chicago, IL.

  • Such beautiful images all remind me of rose perfume. I loved everyone’s choices especially Rose Taif bring a brunette perfume and more dessert than desert and the gorgeous rose de Hollande
Ida I loved Mohur extrait too since I love the edp
    U.K.

  • Roger Engelhardt says:

Wow!! Some amazing scents here. I own a 15ml of Kazimi and love it!! I am familiar with Ta’if, as I have a sample, and Lyric man I owned around 2010!
I still have a sample of Absolut Poir le Soir and am holding onto that for dear life sonce it seems to be no longer available!!
Still have a small amount of Une Rose, brilliant scent, and also 2/3rds of a bottle of Le Fille de Berlin, also stunning.
My favorites to win in the draw are…anyone of them!!
    I am in the USA.

  • What a generous giveaway! Thank you for the opportunity.
I love roses in a perfume but I have to say that I don’t have many with a prominent rose note. Stella, Jo Malone, and i also have a Parfums de Gres rose that I don’t think I’ve worn in years. Too many compliments with Stella and Jo.
Since i do love roses, all of your choices appeal to me! Though a couple more than others. I would choose…
Rose Etoile de Hollande – I would really enjoy this, with the rose, peach, cedar, it sounds wonderful.
Ta’if – roses with pink pepper and amber? Yes!
Lyric Man – for my honey! I’d love for him to wear this, it sounds sexy!

Thanks for the draw, I”m in the US.

  • I’ve been wanting to try the Ta’if and the Etoile Hollande. The only thing I’ve tried from Neela Vermeire so far was Rozy and it was very old fashioned and not me. There are a lot of rose scents listed here that I hadn’t heard of, like the Aether Arts one. Mohur really appeals to me for the almond and cardamom notes. The only one I know I wouldn’t like is Ballet Rouge – oakmoss and dry scents don’t tend to work for me. My favorite rose scents are Amouage Lyric Woman, Fresh Cannabis Rose, Serge Lutens Sa Majeste La Rose and Eau D’Italie Paestum Rose. So I tend to lean towards peppery, spicy or woody roses, though I love a dewy or honeyed one. I do like the romance of wearing roses on Valentine’s day, though I usually tend to wear more “sexy” gourmand musks on that day.

Thanks for the giveaway. I’m in the US.

    Please enter me for:

Mona di Orio Rose étoile de Hollande
    Ormonde Jayne Ta’if
    Neela Vermeire Mohur Extrait
    House of Matriarch Kazimi
    Amouage Lyric Man
    M.Micallef Rose Extreme
    Aether Arts Ginger Rose

  • Elizabeth T. says:

The peach in Rose Etoile de Hollande sounds very alluring… and Kazimi has five different rose accords?!?!… and I didn’t know Lyric Man was so heavy on the rose – I don’t think I’ve ever tried a rose fragrance for men, but it sounds awesome… and M. Micallef does rose with peach and osmanthus in Rose Extreme? Count me in! My favorite rose, not on the list, is Immortal Beloved by Ys Uzac. I love the plum in it. Thank you for opening my eyes to others that are out there. I’m in the USA.

  • This is a fantastic draw! I was never a rose lover until I experienced MFKs Lumiere Noire pour Femme. Now I am on a rose kick to find the others I love! Thank you!

  • What a wonderful draw.
I am personally most interested in the Miller Harris Rose de Noir ( the entire house agrees with my chemistry) and the Aether Perfume Ginger Rose ( I purchased their sampler kit and find the entire aesthetic fascinating)

I live in Canada, and would like to enter for the Aether Arts Perfumes Ginger Rose please. I am a registered reader.

    Thank you for the chance

  • I looove roses! I especially love jammy spicy roses – my favorite rose perfume is Andy Tauer’s Rose Flash. A little goes a long with that one. I would love to win any of these, but especially the following:

    Amouage’s Lyric Man

  • Wow…what an awesome giveaway!! I love rose fragrances, so I feel very compelled to enter lol. Some of my faves are Noir de Noir, Tobacco Rose, Rose Flash, Calligraphy Rose, Amouage Rpic Woman, Une Rose Chypree, Charlatan (even though I find the jasmine to be more prominent than the rose). Of the ones in the giveaway I am interested in M. Micallef Rose Extreme, Olympic Orchids Ballet Rouges, Amouage Lyric Man, Maison Mona Di Orio Rose Etoile de Hollande, and Ormonde Jayne Ta’if. I’m in the United States…Tennessee. Very exciting!!!

  • La Rose Jacqueminot is the vintage bloom that steals my heart, such romance, such history. The modern rose that makes my heart flutter is Noir de Noir. Chocolate and roses? Yes, please! And a wonderful video review, too.

In a race for the roses I would chase after Rose Etoile de Hollande or Kazimi. I am in the US. Thank you to CaFleureBon and the generous perfume people who bring to life this exciting draw.

  • Such an incredible selection of rose perfumes. So different from each other. I am not usually a big fan of roses as they don’t wear well on me too floral or sharp. Ormonde JayneTaif, Mohur Extrait, or Micallef Rose extreme might be the “one”. I have a bottle of vintage Tresor and love the fruitiness. Thank you,and I am a brunette who lived in Connecticut US

  • I never realised how much I like rose as a perfume note until answering this question! I have and love, Noir de Noir, Mohur edp, Cologne pour le Soir. Oud Satin Mood in samples…
Thank you for hosting this Valentines draw, I would love the Neela Vermeire Mohur extrait or HOM Kazimi.
    I live in Australia

  • Thanks for doing this! I love roses in real life and in perfume. The most gorgeous rose in my collection is a rose attar called Ta’if Roses, which I dab on or layer lightly with other rose fragrances to deepen their rose notes. I love Rose Flash by Andy Tauer, and Amouage Lyric Woman. Of the scents to be drawn, I would be delighted with any of these:

    Mohur Extrait
    Rose Etoile de Hollande
    Ormonde Jayne Ta’if
    Ballets Rouges
    Kazimi
    Rose Extreme
    Ginger Rose

    I live in the USA.

If I were fortunate to win one of these Rose beauties, I’d love to own Ballets Rouges, Rose aetoile de Hollander, Kazimi, Rose Extreme, Rose Ta’if or Lyric Man. I am in the US and thank you and all the generous companies for the chance.

  • Monica Beaton says:

I love how roses all smell just a little bit different – the Blue Moon Rose is my favourite! I would love to own Ormonde Jayne Ta’if, Olympic Orchids Ballets Rouges, M.Micallef Rose Extreme, Tobacco Rose, Rose Flash, Calligraphy Rose, Amouage Rpic Woman, Une Rose Chypree, Charlatan. I am in Australia – thank you for such a generous giveaway!

Captured and revived into perfumes that can never be too much or one of the same. Always a pleasure -be it the prominent or reserved note behind others.

  • I love rose scents. Love lush, dark, creamy, rich and juicy ones. My favourites are Ensar Rose, Oud Satin Mood, Zeeba by Teone Reinthal Natural Perfumes, Une Rose Chypree, David Yurman LE Extract and Musiqa Oud. My choices are:

    Mohur Extrait
    Ta’if
    Ballets Rouges
    Kazimi
    Ginger Rose
    Rose Extreme
    Tom Ford Noir de Noir
    Coty La Rose Jacqueminot

    I am in Australia

  • I would love to test the original La Rose Jacqueminot from Coty, but I know that this will remain only a dream. I will have to be grateful for the others rose perfumes available.. I do like the rose and iris or violet combination in perfumes that have that make-up vibe like Lipstick Rose from Malle though. These are my favourite rose fragrances.

If I were to win, for I am from EU, my picks are Ta’if and Rose Etoile de Hollande. Many thanks and good luck!

  • What a great list of roses! My favorites are Rose de Siwa, DSH La Reine des Fleurs, and Parfum de Rosine Ballarina 1. I would love to try any of these but the one I most covet is:
NV Mohur Extrait, I know how delicious this one is!
After that I’d be delighted to win any of them. Thanks to the perfumers and for the review. USA

  • Sleepylizard says:

  • Richard potter says:

This column is an absolute treasure trove for us Rose lover. Perfect bedtime read after a 12 hour work day. I adore rose fragrances and would be delighted to win any one of the offerings. Thank you. USA

  • I am in love with roses and my beloved perfume from this list if Noir de Noir by Tom Ford.
    My picks:
    – 75 ml of Rose Etoile de Hollande
    – 50 ml of Ta’if
    – 30 ml spray of Ballets Rouges
    – Rose Extreme
    – 15 ml of Kazimi
    – 2 x8 ml Mohur Extrait
Thank you for the amazing review, stunning pictures and draw as well, I am in EU.

  • Rose is an eternel subject in perfumery, as it has so many aspects and dimensions! I havent found my ideal rose yet, but i love such dry dense rose as in Rose Calligraphy Aramis, Coup de Grace Herve Gambs, also i like Eau de Protection Etat Libre d’Orange. Currently I am wearing very subtle woody white rose – Comme Une Evidence Pour Homme by Yves Rocher, very unusual, very soothing. I am fascinated by elegance of the Noir de Noir TF, but i quite dislike it on my skin (i prefer Cafe Rose by Tom Ford).

I live in Europe (EU) and my choices for the prize are:
    – KAZIMI House of Matriarch (!!!!),
    – Mohur Neela Vermeire,
    – Rose Etoile de Hollande Mona di Orio,
    – Ta’if Ormonde Jayne

Thank you so much for another miraculous draw! :))

  • This entire post is heaven! I am a new rose lover so I will be writing these ALL down.
I have smelled the OJ Ta’if and it is indeed magical. One of the few OJ’s I really loved out of the sample set. To win it I would be very happy.
Also the Neela Vermeire – I have smelled Bombay Bling and was blown away by its strength and how rich it was so I can only imagine what her rose smells like.

What I am surprised didn’t get a mention is UNE ROSE by Frederic Malle. That is the rosiest rose I have ever smelled. So BIG. So plush and extreme. It takes no prisoners.

Please enter me in all international competitions:
75 ml of Rose Etoile de Hollande
    50 ml of Ta’if
5 ml of Aether Arts Perfumes vintage style Ginger Rose
    x8 ml Mohur Extrait
30 ml spray of Ballets Rouges
    Rose Extreme

Thank you! I am in Melbourne Australia
    15 ml of Kazimi

  • Amazing list! Rose Etoile de Hollande appeals to me because of the creamy and powdery notes. My favorite rose is Incense Rose by Andy Tauer.

    I’d love to try:
Maison Mona Di Orio Rose Etoile de Hollande
    Ormonde Jayne Ta’if
    Mohur Extrait
    M.Micallef Rose Extreme

Thank you for the generous draw! I live in Europe

  • It took me a few years to fall in love with roses in perfume. At the moment I rarely wear anything else. My favourites are Annick Goutal’s Rose Absolue, ce Soir ou Jamais and Quel Amour. I love Andy Tauer’s Une Rose Chypree and Mona’s Rose Etoile. I would be very happy to receive any or the rose draws. Thank you for your generous draw and lovely post!

  • BostonScentGuy says:

Thanks for the romantic draw! Of the ones mentioned, Coty’s Rose Jacqueminot sounds wonderful though I haven’t smelled it. Something about heady, classical rose perfumes delights me! I have tried and love Absolue Pour le Soir, Ta’if, and Mohur (though not in extrait!). Wonderful choices all around. Some favorites of mine (besides the sweet fruity, spicy Ta’if) include Une Rose Chypree, Rose de Nuit, the electric neon fruity Nombre Noir, and Killian’s Rose Oud. I would be thrilled to win Ta’if, Mohur, Lyric, or Rose Etoile de Holland. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • Breathingmybelovedin says:

What a gorgeous parade of fragrances! My most desired ones are by order: Kazimi(!!!), Mohur Extrait, Rose Etoile de Hollande and finally Ginger Rose. Thanks to all so much for the draw. I am in Israel.

  • Thank you so much! I’d love either Kazmi or Mohur. I live in Maryland. Other rose favorites of mine are Lutens Sa Majeste La Rose and Tauer’s Rose Chypree

  • What a fun article. I got a chuckle out of the “Rose Ho”. Before I discovered niche fragrance I used to think Rose was only for “old ladies”. Was I ever wrong! I now have 4 rose centric fragrances in my collection. The one that stood out to me most that I’d love to get my nose on is Miller Harris’. I would love to win Ta’if! My last purchase was Ormond Jayne Vanille Iris and I’d love to win this rose one! Thanks for the draw. USA. Happy Valentine’s day everyone!

  • Roses… I thought for a man to wear in fragrances… HMMM… I just could not understand the concept, until I put my nose around some great creations. And WOW… I was hooked! Noir De Noir just blew my mind as well as Black Aoud by Montale! This looks like a really nice Draw so count me in! I do live in the US and my choices for your Stop and Smell The Rose Perfumes are – Rose Etoile de Hollande – Ormonde Jayne Ta’if – and Amouage Lyric Man of course! THANK YOU!

  • I love roses and i wear rose based perfumes a lot. I “borrow” them from my wife. Like Lutens Majeste la Rose and Malle Une Rose and C&S Dark Rose. Love those!
Wonderful perfumes are mentioned, so many that I’ve not tried yet. The ones that grab my attention are Neela Mohur Extrait and Miller Harris Rose en Noir. Both sound amazing.

I live in the US and my picks in case i win are
    Ormonde Jayne Taif
Mona di Orio Rose Etoile de Hollande
    Neela Vermeire Mohur Extrait
    Olympic Orchids Ballets Rouge
    Thanks.

  • I used to avoid big roses in perfumes, only the scent of fresh roses would do. Until…I can’t remember which perfume it was, partly Nahema, partly AC Rose Anonyme that made me change my mind. And now I can’t get enough of them
My choices are Micallef Rose Extreme and Ormonde Jayne Ta’if.
    Thank you for the draw.

  • I used to wear a lot of rose fragrances and am now down to only one, Dame Perfumery’s Cassis, Rose & Sandalwood, which is a light and fresh, work-friendly take. Of the selections given in the article, I have tried only Olympic Orchids’ Ballets Rouge in a sampler set, and it was lovely. If selected, I would choose Ballets Rouge, Ta’if, or Ginger Rose. I live in the US.

  • Rose is one of my favorite notes in perfumery, so rich and sensual. The fragrances that appeal to me most are Mohur extrait, noir de noir, and lyric man. I am based in Jackson Hole, WY and thanks so much for hosting this generous giveaway!

  • Tom Schroeder says:

I love Andy Tauer’s Phi Une Rose de Kandahar, Une Rose Chypree, Rose Flash, and the rose backbone in Vanilla Flash. Kilian Rose Oud, Duetto, Armani Rose D’Arabie are great. • Aaah, rose is one of my favorite notes in perfumes. I own a few rose scents already. I always surprises how different they all smell. My favorite one from the ones mentioned in the article is Absolue Pour le Soir. However cumin was a note that I had to get used to in APLS, but now I even own a few perfumes with cumin. APLS has a wonderful honeyed rose note.

  • Claudia Kroyer says:

I am a huge Rose fan and adore and own the Micallef Rose Extreme. I love dark roses, sweet roses, roses with citrus but most of all I adore Shiseido Blue Rose. Many of the Rosine fragrances are lovely roses too. I have no particular choice but all of the fragrances listex sojnd lovely.

  • I didn’t think I’d ever wear rose, but then I discovered House of Matriarch’s Kazimi. It makes me feel like I’m in two times at once, the present and the past. For me it has a vibe of a mysterious rich masculine from the 1970s or at least how I’d like to image one smelled, even if it never really existed. Once my mind was open to rose I found an original formula of Dior’s Midnight Poison, which I also wear – MP is very crafted and unnatural smelling to me, but the cold sourness and creamy warmth balance one another well. I’d love to win a 15ml bottle of Kazimi. I’m a UK resident.

  • My favourite rose fragrance is Lyric Man. Such a fresh and crisp creation. It goes well all year round for me due to the warmth of frankincense thrown in.

My picks are: Ta’if and Rose Etoile de Hollande.

    I am from EU. Thanks!

  • Hands down Tom Ford Noir de Noir is my favorite a close 2nd is Le Labo Rose 31. Both to me are wearable mens rose fragrances. After this read I’m going to start looking for another to add to my collection as Valentines day gets near. Thanks from the US

  • So when is a rose not a rose? When it’s blended so beautiful with other notes that it becomes anew even to itself…
    Great rose fragrances listed here.
Would love Ta’if Rose, Extreme, and of course Mohur Extrait <3

  • Malka Gittel bas Reuven says:

I tend to adore Tauer’s way with rose, and why not? Rode Chypree is a revelation. I also adore classic Champs Elysee for being light and a natural rose bush smell; it reminds me of my mother’s one-time rose garden.

Of those here, I’m most drawn to Ginger Rose and then to Rose Ta’if (well, hello, amber!). Also of course, Kazimi, because, Christi. And Amouage Lyric Man.

  • Great group of roses. My favorite rose is by Mancera and I also like Noir de Noir. I like rose noir by byredo too. I enjoyed everyone's choices and live in the US. So I would like any but Amouage Man, Micallef rose extreme, rose de Hollande, Mohur and taif or any really

I haven’t tried any of the perfumes you guys have mentioned with one exception: La Rose Jacqueminot. Coty’s Rose has a rather special reputation between Russian perfume aficionados: one of the important poets of the early 20th century Mikhail Kuzmin loved it so much that his friend, a fellow poet, dedicated him and his perfume obsession a poem!
I’ve tried some vintage version, and I get MK’s devotion to this frag!

I’d like to win any of the following:

75 ml of Rose Etoile de Hollande
    – 50 ml of Ta’if
    – 30 ml spray of Ballets Rouges

    Ormonde Jayne Ta’if
    Rose Extreme
    Mohur Extrait

Thank you for the chance! I live n Europe

  • Kazimi House of Matriarch and Ta’if Ormonde Jayne are on my must have list. Absolue Pour le Soir Maison Francis Kurkdjian and Mohur Extrait Neela Vermeire Creations also looks very promising. Rose En Noir Miller Harris and Ballets Rouges Olympic Orchids Artisan Perfumes – as both are marketed as female scents, but have very interesting notes, especially that the second one is chypre type which I love. • What a great drawing! Although I love the smell of a cheerful living rose, on my skin I prefer roses to lean either a bit darker or more gourmand. Parfum Sacre is probably my favorite, with Lyric Woman being a close second. Clayton’s delectable description of Lyric Man makes me want to try it too. I’m in the US, and my choices would be Ormonde Jayne Ta’if, House of Matriarch Kazimi, Maison Mona di Orio Rose Etoile de Hollande, Neela Vermeire Mohur extrait, or Amouage Lyric Man. Thanks and happy Valentine’s Day!
