SERGE LUTENS: Portrait of the Artist in Black + ‘NOIRE’ Draw

Serge Lutens has left an indelible mark on contemporary perfumery. A narrator of scent as splendor, sophistication, and luxury , his perfumed path began in 1992 with “Féminité du Bois” and continues with “Jeux de Peau20 years later.

Barbara – L'Aigle Noir – Théâtre du Châtelet (Paris) – 1987

But Serge Lutens is known in the fashion world as the Master of Beauty as theater. He worked with the most famous photographers (Richard Avedon, Robert Richardson, Guy Bourdin) and was, of course, the artist behind  Shiseido’s most famous ads.

His background is not conventional, but is always been dedicated to women—- their beauty, modernity and originality. First as a hairdresser, already with a talent for the "not yet seen," the flamboyant but never unwearable, he finds himself working for Vogue Paris.

He styles hair and makeup, and then photographs the models, and then as known as the makeup-artist for Shiseido.  (Editor's note:The ads ran first in the '80s), and these ladieslook current. Smoking eyes, colored mouths, the "woman" by Lutens is sophisticated,  mysterious  and sensual  with kabuki like beauty of the Japanese Geisha. These advertisements have become famous, and are considered a visual signature of Serge Lutens. They accompany the flawless fragrant creations of the Master… fashion, beauty and fragrance are intrinisic to the brand's identity.

A full make-up line, called "Beauty Essentials", with colors corresponding to M. Lutens artistic universe (dark, sharp and dull), was created few years ago. Compact foundations, blushers, eye shadows, eyeliners, mascaras, nail lacquers, lipsticks. The line is  streamlined  and straightforward, designed to fit all beauty needs: Pale or dark skinned, light or dark eyes, for "au natural"  or drama… Each can find what she/he wants.

M. Luten's under the radar beauty line is as stunning as his scents especially his water lip color, glossy  when applied, but with a long lasting matt finish, which was created originally in "Plum" (a vibrant carmine red) and "Saffron" (a sunny orange). The Master reveals in 2011 a third color, probably the most "Lutens-ian" one, a deep black, called "Indian Ink", smooth, reminiscent of some lips makeup celebrated by him in the pages of Vogue. The matte texture gives it a real elegance that emphasizes the flesh of the lips, making them both incredibly captivating and mysterious. It can be used directly on the lips or over a bright lipstick; it is sophisticated and for the femme fatale : apply on a mouth first defined with a lip pencil … Brilliant!

The natural  sister of "Indian Ink" is, of course, a Serge Lutens perfume. A fragrance combining mystery, sensuality, a timeless creation, with shapes that are both daring and synonymous with adventure. A perfume very close to its creator's identity, inevitably, to the black color that you see him wearing, on the bottles' labels, or with its magnificent "Beauty Essentials" packaging . Imagine this 'black ink'  coming to life under the spell of patchouli, cinnamon and incense. This woody touch that identifies Lutens work, this amber that softens the angles without removing its strong, sassy and "classy" nature. How  does one not  think about "Serge Noire"? It is one of the most beautiful creations of the House, which, according to many perfumistas, evokes M. Lutens himself. It is a nod to the name, but also with reference to the  elegant 'serge' fabric, made of woven wool or silk as fine a cloth as bears its name.

Lips that are proudly shown, a perfume that dares  to be itself, together under one banner, BLACK CHIC as the "Aigle Noir' wonderfully sung by famous French artist Barbara. A Lutens woman, for sure!!!!!!

The "Beauty Essentials" kit is available in Paris, at the Serge Lutens Palais Royal boutique, or to shop online: www.sergelutens.com

OMG….did you see that lipstick and the name Indian Ink….what a beautiful color. Well who does not like one or two or many of the Serge Lutens fragrances, i certainly do, one of my favorite perfume houses. So french chic, so fashionable. Thank you for offering such a beautiful prize……

  • Dedicated to Women!!! Loved that statement. Would love to try this one as I have not yet. Love the Name Serge Noire. Also loved the remark that it evokes M Luten himself.

  • Ambre Sultan is one of my absolute, absolute all-time favorites. Even when I don't necessarily like a particular fragrance, I am always very intrigued by it. Lutens does exciting, memorable work, and he just might be a genius.

Please enter moi in the draw.

  • Taffynfontana says:

fragrance and perfectly lined lips does seem to make a perfect duo I am a big fan of Serge Lutens for his creativity and excellent execution.

  • Some of the Lutens lipsticks are to die for! A little tough on the wallet, but really lovely. These stains look wonderful – Indian Ink looks especially fun.
It took me a while to warm up to Serge's perfumes, but I now own two and love them.

  • Love to read about Lutens…the fumes quickly became my favs…Ambre Sultan is a must have for me along with Muscs Kublai Khan….it is that stewed fruit-ness that draws me in…

  • Oooh, I can't wait to try the India Ink and try out the rest of the beauty line. If it's anything like his perfume we are all in for a real treat.  Thanks for offering such a fabulous draw.

  • what a fantastic draw….I adore Lutens. favourites are chergui and daim blond. astill have some left to test. serge noire being one

  • Wahou ! Emmanuelle ! Magnifique ton article !

    Vive l'odorat !

  • All the make-up line is wonderful ! And it probably changed my mind about wearing lipstick or lip ink, as the colors are really wonderful and so sensual.
It's a great moment to try these just next to the magic perfumes… the Palais Royal boutique.
Thanks again to the "women in black" for the wonderful gift…

  • Wow, I love the idea of the "India Ink" lip color. And Serge Noire has been haunting me since my brief sniff when it came out…

  • Claudia Kroyer says:

Sometimes i wish SL was a bit easier to obtain here, especially the bell jars. I must now go look to see if i can find those lip stains. My favorite SL fragrance at this point is Rose de Nuit. 🙂

  • Michelle Hunt says:

Certainly the beautiful and distinctive imagery of Lutens-styled Shiseido advertisements are as indelible as ink.  I would love to be entered in the draw, thank you.

  • What a terrific article! I would love to get some Serge ink on me! My favorite SLs are: Chergui, Cuir Mauresque, and Bas de Soie.

  • My first Serge was Ambre Sultan. I have been very curious about his make up line and have heard only good things about it.

  • I almost love lip color as much as I love fragrances… what a great draw.  My first Serge was the original Feminite du Bois ("gateway drug"). Please enter me in the draw.
    Best,
    Goerdan

  • garde-fou says:

  • Oh, nice!  I appreciated learning that Serge Lutens started as a hairdresser and that his art was always dedicated to women who were unafraid to make a statement.  Not surprising, then, that his first fragrance has "Feminite" in its name.  My friend has several bottles of it from Shiseido still and she wears them as her "truest love" of fragrance.  She says that she will be faithful to it as she feels comfortable in it "from first to last note".  Impressive!

  • I am through with all of the nice girl florals and fres water scents. I want to feel like a bad ass and this is the scent and lip color to take me there!

  • Indian Ink is an awesome name. the whole idea of liquid black lip stain is simply very artsy, like everything Serge does… never fails to surprise.

  • Z. Boudreaux says:

Both sound so lovely! Lutens has so many scents that I'd love to explore. I knew that he had a background in makeup but only recently stumbled upon the makeup line at Barney's when I was there to explore perfumes of course.
Thanks for entering me in the draw!

I am one of a handful of people who loves Serge's Bas de Soie. It's my spring staple. I'd love to try this lipstick! Please enter me if it's not too late!

  • Oh man, Serge Lutens is my favorite perfume house. I just ordered one of his lipstick offerings for my girlfriend as she’s coming to visit me in 2 weeks. The ink would go nicely with the lipstick 🙂
