Let’s face it: it’s only early July and many parts of Europe, the U.S and other locations on the planet have been Hotter Than Hell. It feels like late August too soon; tempers flare, patience diminishes exponentially (especially if you keep a hectic work schedule) and it’s challenging to keep your cool. Perfumer Charna Ethier of Providence Perfume Co provides a cornucopia of solutions. Here’s one of my absolute favorites: Tabac Citron. Zesty, floral/herbal, coumarinic, dreamily woody: it doesn’t take an Einstein to comprehend why this perfume is among Charna’s best-loved fragrances. Before you bristle (as I do, when folk use Popularity As a Motivation For Anything) at this contention, you’ve got to smell it for yourselves. Nothing available even vaguely resembles it; it’s one of the loveliest non-prescription anti-depressants on the market.

Providence Perfume Co Tabac Citron opens with a crown of luscious citrus notes: tangy, mouthwatering, never approaching the sour/bitter spectrum. Freshly squeezed, newly zested – it’s irresistible, like kicking off your shoes and dipping your toes in a public fountain on a scorching day when you’re supposed to be doing something far more adult and responsible. Charna’s choice of rosewood here is intuitive and astute (and bridges top and heart): its lightly spicy, delicately woody lemony/linalool-intense facets presage lavender and showcase her to best advantage. What ensues is round, voluptuous. Provençal lavender turns her comely visage in our direction and exhibits whispering herbalcy and a tender floral profile garlanded with rose (the Perfect Playmate) and buttery ylang ylang (approximately 9% linalool!). The effect is beneficent and soul-soothing (the linalool component being a documented therapeutic one).Tabac Citron’s sense of bien-être comes full circle in its base: luxe velvety sandalwood couples with haylike blond tobacco. We are swathed in pure creature comfort seasoned with sylvan jammy black spruce for companionship. This perfume takes a balsamic turn in the drydown – a quality I personally cherish in fragrance. Besides its obvious botanical charms, Providence Perfume Co Tabac Citron possesses excellent longevity and wears like a lingering aromatic endearment fluttering about you on butterfly wings.
