Profumum Roma Arso, Ambra Aurea and Acqua e Zucchero Review + 3 You Should Be Wearing Draw

Variety is the spice of life, insists the belabored adage – hackneyed but truthful in every way imaginable, especially when it comes to perfume. It’s a joy to recommend a trio of well-composed wearable fragrances which swirl about one like a benevolent zephyr. This time we’re exploring Profumum Roma, an Italian line of considerable refinement. Profumum Roma is a family affair, a fragrance house established by four siblings (Giuseppe, Luciano, Maria and Felice Durante) in 1996 who are jointly referred to as the noses for their abundant creations (I’ve not been able to determine the precise nature of which ones lay claim to any particular scent). Those who are passionate about perfume may find themselves sorely tempted by the sheer variety and unmistakable quality of Profumum’Roma’s prodigious body of fragrant work: there is something for everyone amidst myriad solid glass-encased offerings. With an eye to this aspect, I’d like to suggest three very different scents which might pique your interest and provide olfactory cosseting this long winter.

Profumum Roma Arso (2010):

Sylvan murmurings: where there once was fire, smoke follows. We have found ourselves besieged by über-woody, extra-singed scents recently; Arso is NOT among them, thankfully. You can spirit yourself off to a cabin in the woods and that granite fireplace piled high with pine and cedar logs for a much-needed retreat in short order. Thoreau and Emerson would have enjoyed this, I think – the chimney works and you won’t be suffocated by clouds of acrid smoke (unlike some other perfumes). Thoughtful conversation with treasured companions, the lingering aroma of a well-weathered leather jacket hung by the door. Or you may be all by your wild lone, like the cat who walks by himself (Kipling). If you dab, this will be more discreet but it has excellent longevity regardless of method of application. It received big thumbs up from my dear husband who is rather fussy about his likes and dislikes; the nature girl in me loves Profumum Roma Arso. Notes: leatherincense, pine resin, cedar leaves

Profumum Roma Ambra Aurea (1998):

Amber as Art for Resin Aficionados. When it was released it was the first Profumum I ever purchased (but not the last). At that time, the cost seemed high but it was a BIG Bottle (100 ml) and despite multiple decants for the faithful over the years, it feels as if I’ll never be able to drain it. It was a good investment. Profumum Roma Ambra Aurea bespeaks depth; it is an unending wellspring of amber wed to the dry myrrh and incense which temper its sweetness. It has sung to bus drivers, dear friends, family and the grieving merely by its comforting presence transmitted through embrace and/or ambient sillage. A little goes a long way with this, so my choice is to dab (flacons are capacious and come with atomizers included as an option, not an imperative: the choice is yours). It feels like an aromatic holy vestment, if such a thing makes sense to you. Notes: ambergris, incensemyrrh

Profumum Roma Acqua e Zucchero (2002):

You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar (translated from the Italian, the name means "Water and Sugar"). Those who wear this fragrance garner attention via subversive subtext. Our Editor-in-Chief rocks this particular perfume; it drives men wild and women stop her and ask "WHAT is that fragrance you are wearing".  Anything with orange blossom and vanilla is sure to delight her, and the addition of several varieties of berry only sweetens the pot. There is a tangy edge to it which is alluring and prevents the composition from being cloying. I have sweet-amplifying skin so I have to dose it accordingly – but the Boss has blown through three bottles in two years, a ringing endorsement if ever I heard one. Acqua e Zucchero is sexy and fabulous in the winter with cashmere or wearing nothing at all. Notes:orange blossom, wild berries, vanilla

  • Acqua e Zucchero sounds delightful!!! I also adored the photos with that description! My second would be Ambra Aurea! Lovely review! I’m in Oregon USA Thanks!

  • More luscious creations to add to my wishlist! Thanks Ms Ida. I’m drawn to Profumum Roma Arso. USA

  • I loved how the reviewer tries to capture the nuances of each fragrance through vivid thematic descriptions. It would be a great pleasure to sample some fragrances from this house, as I have yet to try them. Thanks so much for the giveaway! Oregon, USA

  • I’ve not tried this fragrance house but I will I’m so intrigued by Idas review of all 3 Thank-You Ida normally my favs would be exactly in the order you’ve described but bc your boss has dabbed through 3 bottles and you’ve described it to be so well liked by all I’ve got to try Roma Acqua e Zucherro first. It’s funny by the ingredient list of all 3 being short and the scents being so good it’s got me wanting to try I’m so used to reading so many ingredients. USA

Great review, on profumum, Ida knows about concept and story, which is great to understand a complex and elaborate perfume, I’m a big fan of aqua de sale, I would be also interested in arso!

I loooove Ambra Aurea (It’s on the short list for a FB purhcase), but I’ve never really noticed Roma Arso and Roma Acqua e Zucchero before. As always, I love how Ida points out the appealing aspects of the scents, just as much as my bank account cringes. These are all very different, yet all of them sound utterly appealing. Thanks for this opportunity to further explore this line! USA

  • I simply love hearing about this house and their style. Their presentation just does someyhing for me as well. I have really been wanting to try this house !
I really love when it is mentioned what people think about the fragrance or how it made them feal. Ambra Aurorea sounds especially good.
I have not smelled their house, but hope to find favorite soon. I live in the us.

  • Thanks for another great review, Ida! I like what you said about this house- ‘Those who are passionate about perfume may find themselves sorely tempted by the sheer variety and unmistakable quality of Profumum Roma’s prodigious body of fragrant work: there is something for everyone amidst myriad solid glass-encased offerings.’ I’m most interested in Profumum Roma Acqua e Zucchero as I love orange blossoms. I haven’t sampled any from this house yet so thanks for this opportunity. – CA, USA

  • I always enjoy Ida’s reviews but these were particularly appealing as I have been very interested in this house for a while now but have not been able to sample any yet. Thank you for the opportunity to possibly do so! USA

  • I ride the bus quite a bit, so I liked reading that Ambra Aurea sings to bus drivers. All of the descriptions Ida wrote here intrigue me. Arso sounds most like me, loving being alone in the wild so much. But because Acqua e Zucchero sounds like something I’d never buy, I’m most interested in sampling this one. I have never tried anything from this house.
    I live in the USA.

  • Another great review by Ms. Meister. Profumum Roma is a house that I have wanted to get to know. This review certainly helped that wish. Ambra Aurea sounds like a perfect fit for me, along with Roma Arso. It would be wonderful to get the opportunity to sample these. Thank you for the review and thanks for the draw. I’m in the USA

  • Please do not enter me. I just want to say the Aqua e Zucchero is nuclear. I can smell this on my scarf for days after wesring it. Michelyn turned me on to this fabulous fragrance and it remains a staple in my perfume rotation.

  • Acqua e Zucchero sounds very beautiful!
I can say I am not familiar with Profumum Roma, only tested Arso- nice, hut not so impressed.
I would like to ein and test Acqua e Zucchero and Ambra Aurea.

  • I also am a fan of Aqua e Zucchero! I have no intentions of driving men wild but orange blossoms, wild berries, and vanilla dance so beautifully on my skin. Beautifully written par usual, Ida.

  • I’ve never tried anything from this perfume house. I actually like that this giveaway is for 3 different samples. I’d love to win them so I can try out this company. I really like the notes of Profumum Roma Arso. Leather and incense is such a great combination.
    I live in the USA.

  • Been eyeing this house for quite sometime and found the reviews were really interesting.
Upon, Ida’s reviews give more insight how unique smell Profumum Roma fragrances. It thrills me reading and can’t wait to smell Acqua Zucchero on me. The notes are dreamy for me orange blossom, wild berries and vanilla.

Thank you for the opportunity to win.

  • Ida’s stories are evocative and amusing, and you can tell she loves perfume. I especially enjoyed the review of Arso, my favorite of the few Profumum fragrances I’ve tried. Ida’s description captured the feeling I got when I smelled Arso on my wrist, and I recall that feeling whenever I read anything about that house. Arso is a distillation of longing for a quiet cabin in the woods. Potent stuff.

  • Grandiflora says:

What I enjoyed most about Ida’s reviews was reading that “Anything with orange blossom and vanilla is sure to delight”, because I totally agree. Based on Ida’s reviews, I would say my favorite Profumum Roma scent would be Profumum Roma Acqua e Zucchero. I’m in the U.S.

  • Asking what I enjoy most from Ida’s writings is like asking which color of the rainbow is my favorite; they’re all beautiful as is Ida’s verbage when a sniff to her nose creates a fire in her soul. I love how she wears her passions proudly onbhet sleeve.

Best quote from above, if I *had* to pick one? “You can spirit yourself off to a cabin in the woods and that granite fireplace piled high with pine and cedar logs for a much-needed retreat in short order. Thoreau and Emerson would have enjoyed this, I think – the chimney works and you won’t be suffocated by clouds of acrid smoke (unlike some other perfumes)”. Love how she rides a metaphor gracefully side-saddle and never beats it!

The rest are samples. Hadnt thought about it but I need a PR bottle in my armoire…perhaps Acqua e Zucchero!

    Smell swell & be well,

  • From Profumum Roma I’ve tried Arso. What a magical scent. I was clearing a few Pine tress in my parents’ back yard and had a bonfire going. The smell of the Pine sap mixed with the smoldering woods instantly takes me back to Arso. It’s bold and brash and perhaps the best take on Pine. The other two mentioned in this review sound interesting and would welcome the chance to sample them. Cheers from CT.

  • I’m not familiar with this house, but based on the review, Profumum Roma Arso sounds like something I need to track down. Always glad to see a snap of Monica Belluci and Vincent Cassel. Thanks for the review and the draw. I’m in the U.S.

  • I love that she used the word “cosseting.” Lovely. Ambra Aurea is the only one that I have tried. I love it and want to try others.

  • Really interested in the Arso since it sounds like a late 70s or 80s type of scent. Smoky, piny, green. Ambra Aurea sounds really nice too
I havent tried any from this house

Im in IL in the US. thanks for the draw

  • saadfragrance says:
