Perfume Review: LaLun Naturals Noema (Maggie Mahboubian) + Olfactive Illusions Draw

A technical term in phenomenology which is “the philosophical study of the structures of experience and consciousness,” stands for the object or content of a thought, judgment, or perception. It derives from the Greek word “νόημα meaning thought or what is thought about”. In rhetoric “the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing” Noema is a “figure of speech whereby something stated obscurely is nevertheless intended to be understood or worked out.

A noema then “only yields meaning upon detailed reflection.” And much like these intellectual pursuits Noema the perfume by Lalun Naturals the all botanical perfume and skincare collection developed by Maggie Mahboubian takes a lot of contemplation to explore its depths. It is a beautifully complex and layered composition that is not easily divided into the sum of its parts. With listed notes of gardenia, black leather and incense this is the darker earthier side of gardenia.

“Dark, dense, abstract and turgid, twisting and turning, NOEMA dances like smoke from the fire of our desire.”

There is the sweetness and fattiness of the intoxicating white floral that one associates with gardenia but upon the first spray one notices that the green overly sweet aspects have fallen to the wayside while the darker notes of the surrounding earth have been pulled to the forefront. I suspect vanilla may have helped wrap this gardenia in a soft embrace to protect it from the rich layered base that surrounds it.  Incense provides a romantic softness and a ritualistic contemplativeness that grounds the sweetness of the gardenia and helps guide this safely toward niche unisex territory. The leather here doesn’t reach animalic proportions but it does help coax gardenia out of the garden and into the night. All of this dries down to a sweet lactonic and softly spicy oriental base highlighted by very high quality sandalwood. Notes: Gardenia, Sandalwood, Vanilla, Incense, Leather, soft spice.

Disclosure: I received my sample of Noema from Maggie Mahboubian, opinions my own.

  • Gardenia confuses me (sometime i like it, sometimes i dont) so i am glad to see that Noema departs from the usual and offers something more with the vanilla, incense and leather. I am perusing on this combination!

  • Welcome to Ca Fleure Bon, Zee! I loved how you started the review by explaining the concept behind the word “noema”. The intellectual aspect of this fragrance really captured my imagination! I live in Canada. Thanks 🙂

  • Welcome to CaFleureBon, Zee. You write with such elegance. I love the interplay of assertiveness and meekness that characterizes unisex fragrances. Noema sounds like it is right up my alley. I live in the US.

  • Oh, Zee, thank you for the lovely review, and welcome! I always look forward to reviews of all-natural fragrances here at CaFleureBon. Noema’s “ritualistic contemplativeness” sounds like a miracle I would love to experience. I am in the US. Thank you for the review and the draw.

  • Oh thanks! Most of the writing I’ve done has been fairly academic so I’m glad my poetic side was able to shine through. @jpboukis I think this is unisex not necessarily the same thing as masculine in my opinion it’s still VERY floral, still very much about intoxicating gardenia but one swathed in soft sensual dark wood. Still very worth a try to see if it’s for you though.

  • I believe reflection is sometimes the only way to properly understand the meaning behind a piece of creation. The art by Mora is such a great example of depicting the packaging of Noema. Welcome Zee to the perfume writing world. It is an interesting field.

Thanks a lot for the generous draw. I am in the US.

  • Welcome to Zee. I smelled some gardenia scents last year and quite liked them, but nothing with leather in it. This could be very interesting. I’m happy to find out what Noema means without looking it up. USA

Welcome to the blog Zee! I enjoyed reading this review about a scent that features a favorite note of mine prominently. I’m always intrigued by gardenias that aren’t of the fake laundry fresh variety–the woods and incense flanking the flower appeal to me! Would love to be entered into the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Welcome Zee! I love gardenia and am intrigued by the incense, leather, and spice play on it. I live in the US and thanks for the draw!

  • Welcome Zee! What a thoughtful approach. Perfume as an intellectual concept is an interesting way to characterize your experience with Noema. The artwork complimented the review beautifully too. I like my florals natural, and the dichotomy of the purity of gardenia with a counterpoint of leather and smoke intrigues me. Please include me in the draw. U.S.

  • Dear Zee welcome to the Cafleurebon team and let me wish to you all the best to this endeavor of yours.
Thank you for the amazing review! Your description of the perfume notes, which I have to admit are all very dear to me, make it too hard to resist! The way you eloquently describe how the notes all together protect gardenia from its galactic sweetness and how incense attempts to ground gardenia and add a more spiritual and contemplative character yes definitely I long to try this masterpiece!
Furthermore, I love the name of the perfume Noema and the lovely and so surreal pictures and paintings used to evoke Zee’s review of Noema, “a perfume of contemplation but also illusion” as dear Michelyn mentioned! Thank you dear MC for helping me advance my knowledge in history of art, Cafleurebon blog is a truly artistic expression blog !
I am a registered reader living in EU, Greece and I thank you for the lovely review and draw as well!!!

  • Welcome, Zee, to the classiest and most informative perfume blog I know! Looking forward to reading more of your reviews. Gardenia is tricky for me, I like it combined with darker elements and your description of the rich earth, incense and leather in Noema is very intriguing. Thanks for the generous draw! I’m in the US.

  • Congrats Zee!
I was contemplating flying out to California to study with Mandy also. From your description, this sounds like something I would really enjoy. I love the combination of vanilla and sandalwood and the way you say that the leather envelops the gardenia sounds incredible enticing. Gardenia was my mom’s favourite, so I think I would have a strong connection to this fragrance. I’m in Switzerland, if I end up the lucky one on this side of the pond.
    With gratitude

  • Welcome, Zee!! I don’t typically wear gardenia fragrances because they are usually overpowering floral scents. But Noema sounds like a mysterious formulation with sandalwood and incense. I’d be thrilled to be able to try this perfume! I live in the U.S.

  • Jennifer Mirich says:

Welcome to you! Mandy After lives in the next city over from me, and we love her grace in the Bay area. This scent Noema sounds like something I’d find in India deep in the heart of the Attar world. I’m always a fan of unisex perfumes. Thank you!

  • Zee, Welcome! Your passion for this creation certainly appeared as a “Knight on a white horse.” Great review. I love the headiness of gardinia at first sniff, but also that earthy note that comes through on deeper inhalation. Florals with incense are certainly very deep and labyrinthine fragrances that appeal to me greatly. I am a registered US reader.

  • Welcome Zee! Your poetic description of this perfume is very alluring! I’m certainly interested in experiencing the perfume you describe. Since I tend to be drawn toward earthier scents, I think I would really enjoy the balance of floral, leather and earthy notes. I’m also a burgeoning perfumer and a fan of Mandy Aftel’s work.
Thank you for your first review! I’m looking forward to more.

  • Thanks for this review Zee – I felt as though I could really understand what this perfume is about! I like white florals, and have been searching for a leather that works with my skin – and the way you describe the leather in this sounds like it could work for me. I’m also intrigued by the lactonic and slightly sweet oriental base, that sounds dreamy. Thanks for this opportunity! I’m in the US.

  • Welcome, Zee! I would love to make the acquaintance of this leather and incense scent.
    I live in the US.

  • Welcome Zee to the wonderful world of Cafleurebon! My gardenias have always been light and bright, so I am intrigued by one that is listed as dark and moody. I would love to give it a try and I love naturals, especially with strong florals. USA

  • Welcome Zee! Great review! Also wonderful artwork chosen for this review.

I have always had a soft spot for natural perfumes. I love Gardenia scents, however most have been on the light white Gardenia side. What does “dark” Gardenia smell like? I’m definitely intrigued! The description in this review definitely draws me to this perfume.

Noema is also a wonderful name. I live in the USA and I would love to win Noema!

  • Welcome to CFB Zee! I love the sweet and warmness that this fragrance produces. I think it would be a great choice for a cuddle scent or in cold weather. Definitely has me interested! I’m a Canadian reader and thanks for the draw!

  • Welcome Zee!!! This is what sold me on the fragrance:
“Incense provides a romantic softness and a ritualistic contemplativeness that grounds the sweetness of the gardenia and helps guide this safely toward niche unisex territory.”
LOVE incense, and lately embracing unisex-leaning fragrances.I live in NYC in the USA. Thanks!

  • Valentine Girl says:

I would also like to add my voice to the chorus of welcomes. Bienvenue chez Cafleurebon Zee! Gardenia was my grandmother’s favorite flower and she had two large plants growing near the screened porch, which I can still close my eyes to this day, and smell in my memory of fragrance. I am more of a black leather wearing rebel, so I was enticed by your description of how the notes of Noema “help coax gardenia out of the garden and into the night”. It sounds like a perfume which would bring back memories of my grandmother, yet appeal to my spirit. I have a great respect for natural perfumery & thoroughly enjoyed your review of Noema. I look forward to many more & I believe the Cafleurebon community can only learn and benefit from your knowledge. USA resident.

  • Welcome Zee. This creation sounds quite wonderful. Very interested in how the gardenia mixes with the vanilla, leather, and incense. It has the potential to be a real head-turner.

    I’m in Canada and thanks!
