Perfume Review: Au Pays de La Fleur D’Oranger Collection Les Inédites Lavande Ombrée + Lavender Hombre Draw

I hate lavender I have to just come out and say that.  For an herb that has occupied such an important place in history, you’d think I’d appreciate it more.  Especially when lavender features so prominently in many classic men’s fragrances, (ie. the fougeres), you’d think I’d come around over time.   But no – I’ve always associated lavender scents with limp, overly-dandified excursions into prissy, snooty faux-sophistication.  Lavender is the raised pinky note of the perfumed world, and so I move on.

Enter Au Pay de la Fleur Oranger’s Lavande Ombrée from the Collection les Inédites released in 2013 (Jean Claude Gigadot). The name translates as Shadowy Lavender, and it’s entirely apt.  The lavender here is backed by sharp cinnamon and cedar, creating a dark and smoky quality that is definitely masculine. This is no polo field perfume, to be worn by aristocrats before high tea. Lavande Ombree is the scent for Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven: -Lavande Hombre.

smoky lavender au pays de la fleur d'oranger

It's a bone-dry, charred, scorched-earth lavender.  The notes usual overt soapiness is far in the background, at first eclipsed on the opening by a sweet bergamot, and then flattened by the blend of the cedar and cinnamon notes in the heart.  Lavande Ombrée is a fragrance that only wants to highlight the astringent, herbal qualities of lavender, as a kind of palate cleanse after a hearty blast of spices and wood notes.  Rose is also listed here, but it is not prominent; this fragrance is about roughing up a traditionally staid style of perfume, rather than allowing a floral component to soften it.  The drydown is a whisper of musk and amber, almost an afterthought, with a touch of patchouli to act as a bridge between the rawness of the cedar and the last remnants of scent.

For an Eau De Parfum, this fragrance has quite powerful sillage  Just like Clint Eastwood, Lavande Ombrée comes on strong. The shadowy, leather-like smoke is the major attraction here – it roars out of the bottle, and then you’re left with a thin trail of sweet musk after about an hour or so.  The effect is like watching a gun being fired in slow motion.

Lavande Ombrée is a rugged scent and for  anyone who worships at the shrine of fruity florals, this may not be for you. It is however a shared fragrance and great for a woman who is searching for  a lavender perfume that doesn't smell like laundry soap.  I appreciate that Creative Director  Virginie Roux and Jean Claude Gigot approach; they took a tried-and-true men’s fragrance note,  made it a little gritty and and moved it out of the “ascots and ponies” realm  where most lavender-based men’s fragrances reside.  This seems natural for a company whose  founders, Virginie and Antoine Roux, have been connected for generations to the perfumed history of the Grasse region (Antoine’s grandfather was the Flower Commissioner to the local perfume factories.)

I had some longevity issues (four hours), which just could be me as the fragrance disappears a little too soon, when  after such a dramatic first act I want it to go on all night. It reminds me of that moment, in an early Eastwood Western when the gunfight is over, and in the ensuing silence, the townspeople are left cowering and confused, unsure if it’s safe to come out on the street again.   When I wear Lavande Ombrée, I feel like it's OK to go home.

  • Burnt lavender? Sounds like a great alternative to sickly-sweet lavenders, which can be cloying and go straight to my head. The longevity wouldn’t be an issue if it was a fragrance for special nights in. US resident. Thanks for the review and the draw!

  • This sounds so good…I love cedar and smoke and like my lavender dry and herbal, so it’s now on the ever expanding sample wish list. My favorite Clint Eastwood movie is Unforgiven, talk about taking any imagined romance out of gun fighting. I’m in the US, thanks for the great review and draw!

  • I love dry lavender, and this appeals to me because you said it doesn’t smell like laundry soap. That sounds perfect! I also love smoky notes, and I’m for sure not a fruity floral girl.

“The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly” is the best Clint Eastwood movie.

    I’m in the US.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  • I love how this perfume’s lavender is astringent and herbal – why on earth are so many lavenders soapy and “old-lady” smelling?? My favorite Clint Eastwood movie is The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. I’m in the US, thanks for the great draw!

  • “…bone-dry, charred, scorched-earth lavender…” Very Clint, Steve – you’re exactly right on. Smoky notes, shadowy and leathery on top of the main lavender theme all sounds like an intriguing and unique fragrance.
My favorite CE movie is probably “Play Misty for Me,” as it was also quite unique for its time.
    I’m in the U.S.A.
Thank you to Au Pays de la Fleur D’Oranger and CaFleureBon for the very generous draw. And to Steve Johnson for such a rip-snorting review.

  • Love the review! Lavande Ombrée sounds amazing, all smoky, dry and leather-like … if it’s good enough for Clint Eastwood, it is definitely good enough for me!

Oh gosh, super hard to pick a favorite Eastwood movie, but I loved him in Gran Torino!

Thank you for the draw … I am in the US.

  • This is a fascinating combination of notes- I would love to have the opportunity to see a different side of lavender and anything smoky is my cup of tea!!! I live in the US and I love all Clint movies but especially The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Thanks got the draw- Tati

I like the sound of this scent as its opposite form all traditional lavender stereotypes. My favorite Clint Eastwood movie is Dead Pool. I live in the US.

  • Wow it sounds very MASCULINE… I would love to have my husband try this, and I would like to try it myself as well. US for me.

I have a couple of English lavender shrubs in my yard (“Royal Velvet”) and their drought hardiness is being tested this year as never before, since water conservation measures went into effect locally this summer. I harvested the buds in late May to soak in a blend of coconut and olive oils and the resulting oil smells like it has elements in common with Lavande Ombree–it is not at all floral or soapy but green, resinous, and smoky. Trouble With the Curve is my most recent favorite featuring Clint Eastwood. I am in the US and mahalo for the generous draw!

  • I love smoky lavenders 🙂 My favorite Clint Eastwood movie is The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. I am in the US, thank you!

  • Fazal Cheema says:

I have many lavender fragrances but they all are mellow so this is the really the first lavender fragrance i am reading about that is harsh and has leather elements. Like the author, I also had hard time liking lavender in the beginning and the popularity of lavender masterpieces like Caron Pour Homme did confound me but over time, i have come to appreciate the timelessness of lavender note…my favorite Client Eastwood movie is The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. I am in the US..thanks a lot for the generous gift

Beautiful review Steve.. I’m a bit of a lavender-phobe normally .. the only one i adore is Vero Kern’s Angelesque ‘Kiki’ but this sounds amazing.. I like the brand’s Neroli collection a lot. Clint-wise gotta be ‘The Beguiled’… UK.

  • I like the seemingly rough, but reassuring nature of Lavande Ombree, and how it shies away from the typical soapy-colognish scent!
The only movie I like starring Clint Eastwood is The Bridges of Madison County. I prefer him more like a director (Million Dollar Baby) than actor.
I am in Bulgaria (EU). Thank you for the opportunity!

  • Everything about this perfume sounds grand. I love Lavender. My favorite Clint Eastwood movie is ” Gran Torino ” and I live in the U.S.Thanks for the draw!!

  • I love the idea of a smoky lavender as I usually associate this note with soap. I also like a shared perfume, both my husband and I are Clint Eastwood fans. His favorite is The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, mine is Play Misty for Me. Thank you for the draw, I’m in the US.

  • I found appealing in Lavande Ombrée first its notes lavender, bergamot, cinnamon, rose, cedar, amber, musk, leather, patchouli and then the fact that it has a dark and smoky quality that is definitely masculine but can be worn by a woman too, a woman who likes a lavender perfume that leaves no “soapy” scent.
My favorite movies of Clint Eastwood are the five Dirty Harry films, Harry Callahan character throughout the ’70s and ’80s but many others as well since I am a fan of Clint Eastwood and I am glad for the fact that he is also a very well known producer and composer (artistic nature indeed).
I live in EU and I thank you for this lovely draw.

  • Very nice article, I like it. I have lavender in my garden, but I had never try lavender perfume.
    Thanks for the draw.
    I live in Europe.

  • The notes sound very appealing, cinnamon, rose and cedar next to each other caught my attention. Of all the things I’ve smelled with lavender, I don’t believe I’ve smelled an arrangement like this before!

Favorite Clint movie is tough because there’s so many good ones – he was on a roll there for a bit with Gran Torino, Million Dollar Baby, directing Mystic River, etc., but I’d have to go with Unforgiven. It seemed to embody him in so many ways with his career and directing, not to mention the western had been not-so-vogue for many years at that point.

I’m in the USA – thanks for the opportunity!

  • I love lavender, but NOT in perfume! I love it in cleaning products, bubble baths, and food (shortbread and vanilla iced cream)! So, what intrigues me about this scent? That you, a lavender hater, likes it! Maybe it will change my mind about lavender perfume, too. Thanks for the generous draw & cheers!

  • I love lavender, especially the herbal/astringent aspect, so I’m sure I’d love this scent! Mystic River is haunting. I live in the UK.

  • I am curiuos about the leather like smokey feel of the lavander. My favorite Clint Eastwood movie is Million Dollar Baby. I am in the EU.

  • I don’t like lavender perfumes at all
They smell like old lady soap
I would like to try lavande ombrée my favorite Clint Eastwood film is Million Dollar Baby with Hilary swank
    I cried and cried
    Thank you

  • I reside in the US, my favorite Clint Eastwood movies are, Gran Torino, Hang Em High, Bridges of Madison County, Changeling and Two Mules for Sister Sara. Some of his older stuff really appeals to me 🙂 Please enter me. Thank you for the opportunity 🙂

  • Love the notes – smoky lavender, instead of clean. while I appreciate medicinal benefits of lavender, I have yet to embrace it as scent. I think my fav Eastwood movie is Gran Torino. I live in the US. thanks for the draw.

  • I do like lavender, so that is reason enough to want this. My favorite Clint Eastwood movie is, “Pale Rider” USA

  • I love gourmand lavenders and the cinnamon might do it for me. Favorite Clint Eastwood is definitely The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. I’m in the US.

  • I love lavender, but this sounds like such a different take on the note that I’m utterly sold: smoky lavender with cinnamon and bergamot!?!? Yes, please! I’m not a huge Eastwood fan, but I went through a phase (entirely inexplicable to me now) of being obsessed with the Dirty Harry movies when I was younger, particularly Magnum Force. I’m in the US; thanks for the draw!

  • I like the description of a bone dry lavender. Lavender is a favorite element of mine. Not a huge fan of Clint Eastwood today as our view points of the world differ, but back in the day I enjoyed Dirty Harry. I am a big fan of this line of perfume. I own the fig, tuberose, and neroli blanc. I live in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • I’m definetly looking for a soap free lavander fragrance. Masculine pluriel by Francis kurkdijan is a very good contender too. Love rugged and care free sexy fragrances. My fav. Film by Clint east was Changeling.
    Thanks USA

  • Lavender is such a surprising ingredient in perfumes. Many times it is invisible but gives the special touch to the perfume.

I am surprised that the fragrance disappears too soon after reading base notes of the perfume, but it would be surely interesting to see the metamorphosis of it.

Clint Eastwood was best in The Bridges of Madison County. Totally different from his other movies. Loved it!!

    Greetings from Germany.

  • I like lavender as an essential oil, I have been a lot of times in South France when the lavender blossom and makes it all blue and scented in the air. I am not surprised when is said “I hate lavender”, It’s difficult tyo make a good lavender scent…. but when it is , there’s nothing which makes me feel so good.
My favourite C. Eastwood film is The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
    I,m in Europe (Spain)

  • I love lavender soap, shampoo, perfume and I will love this. What’s appealing about this is the addition of cinnamon. The Clint Eastwood movie I have enjoyed is, The Changeling. 🙂 isa

  • There have been many perfumes with lavender in my life, from Jicky or Pour un homme de Caron to Azzaro and amazing House of Matriarch Epiphany. Lavande Ombrée seems like unique, beautiful fragrance that is also a sort of challenge at the same time. With its smoky, dark and leathery but also spicy properties, it is for sure a perfume I would love. Generally, I love fresh and dried lavender as well as lavender oil but also as a raw material in perfumes. Lavender seems simple material, but I think that it has large and priceless potential in perfumery so I’m happy when I see beauty of the game with it, transferred into lovely perfume. Of course, I’ve watched many Clint’s movies. I especially love his roles in Gran Torino and Pale Rider. As director – again Gran Torino and Mystic River.
I’m in the EU, Croatia. Thank you.

My favorite Clint Eastwood movie is The Bridges of Madison County.

I live in the Netherlands. Thanks for this lovely draw!

  • “The shadowy, leather-like smoke is the major attraction here,” this is what draws me most to Lavande Ombrée. My favorite Clint Eastwood movie is Million Dollar Baby. I’m in the U.S. Thanks!
