Ormonde Jayne Tolu (Geza Schoen and Linda Pilkington) Perfume Review + Timeless Oriental Fragrance Draw

Erte, L© (for Linda)

Ormonde Jayne Tolu, sweet resins from Peru, Cashmere coats, fine French cognac and a leopard on the rug”-Linda Pilkington, Founder and Creative Director of Ormonde Jayne

Merle Oberon 1937

Plush, lush and opulent, Ormonde Jayne's Tolu reminds me of the great Oriental fragrances of years gone by, but reimagined for the 21st century. I can’t fact check it but I do believe Linda Pilkingkton and Geza Schoen were the first to use tolu balsam in a perfume. Rich and resinous, Ormonde Jayne Tolu opens with a melange of orange blossom, clary sage and frankincense. Within the hour, I journey to an Indian Spice Market and inhale the intoxicating aromas of cloves, cinnamon and sweet tonka beans.  Frankincense reappears surrounded by a puff of powder, then something wild and animalic prowls silently on golden paws before the luminous amber drydown. Sultry and sensual, Tolu is scent as seduction, a perfume that pulls me in and won't let me go. I discovered this gem in 2005, but Sr. Contributor Sebastian recently smelled Ormonde Jayne Tolu for the first time at ZGO in San Francisco and his response was “Oh My God what is that”?

  • I’m sure I smelled fragrances that made me stop in my tracks, but I can’t recall what. I have smelled Tolu and had samples and would love to win this. As the review says, it is unique. US

  • I always love Sebastian’s reviews and when he said it is truly a one of a kind fragrance I knew I had to try it. The only other oriental that stopped me in my tracks was actually Guerlain’s Heritage (Edt).

Honestly this is the first time I’ve seen Sebastian floored by a scent! It’s amazing that someone who has put his nose in so many scents that a) he hadnt smelled this one that is almost 20yrs old, b)one smell blew him away & c) the absolute giddiness of his review. You can just tell he will be wearing this one A LOT! Haha.Recently, I have heard some great things about Ormonde Jayne, so an opportunity to wins this would be AMAZING!! I had the same “blown away” feeling when I smelled Mandarina Duck Pure Black for the first time. One sniff and I was like can I bathe in this haha! Anyway thanks for the chance to win. Tampa, Florida, USA

  • DonMiguelIvory says:

He made me want to desperately try this baroque beauty. The first perfume that stopped me in my track was COCO the spice queen. Wearing it makes me feel like a filter was just put over my life. As though I’m living in a vintage picture.

  • middleagedandmixed says:

I have been meaning to try Ormonde Jayne mostly because of Sebastian’s reviews and his latest video is no exception. His description of the notes and explanation of tolu balsam have further piqued my interest.

  • I love love Ormonde Woman. Tolu is not one I know, but Sebastian’s review makes it sound like one not to miss. The Ormonde Jayne line is beautifully curated and I would love to have this one in my collection. I am in the UD.

  • Guillermo Barajas says:

I’ve been wanting to try Ormond Jayne fragrances for a while now, but it’s a bit out of my price range. Sure would appreciate a to win this give away.

  • Guillermo Barajas says:

Sebastian’s videos always brings me new and exciting fragrances to want to try such as the OJ Tolu. Definitely want to at least try a sample.

  • Never heard of this but i love rich and spicy fragrances. The biggest impact a fragrances has had on me was my first smell of Aventus.

  • Well, Frederick Malle’s Portrait of a Lady definitely turned my head around. Sebastian’s mentioned frankincense, juniper berries, tolu balsam and clary sage, all of which I am a fan of. I would love to sniff this. USA

  • Lori Laws says:

Sebastian’s excitement in the video tells me that this is one that needs to be in my collection! I loved his in depth knowledge and explanation of tolu balsam. I always have been a big fan of fragrances that are “love and first sniff” and those that stop you in your tracks. The fragrance that stopped me in my tracks is Guerlain’s SDV. I have heard of Tolu and have always wanted to try it, so I hope that I am fortunate enough to win. Thanks so much for the giveaway and I live in the US! 🙂

  • kyle stevens says:

Just recently bought a couple Ormonde Jayne fragrances Ambre Royal and Tsarina. I’m a big fan or oriental woody fragrances. The first fragrance I fell in love with was Dior Homme, something about the iris. I really look forward to trying Tolu as I’m pretty new to the house.

  • Michael Cochrane says:

Loved the explanation of Tolu Balsam and became very intrigued how this would smell when blended with Orange Blossom and Amber. Sounds Amazing!!! Would love to sample this. I own Ormonde Jayne Pour Homme and love it.

  • Ivan.napoleon says:

Sebastián s review perfect as usual
I recall one fragance that stopped me in my track and was Interlude.
    Id love to try this
    Miami Florida
    Thanks

  • Love how both of the reviews emphasize on the frankensense. Great reviews by both!

  • Amy Leonhardt says:

Appreciated learning more about tolu balsam from Sebastian and that Geza Schoen was the first to use tolu in perfume. I don’t have this house near me to sample, so I haven’t smelled it yet, either. Love orientals and balsam notes especially. Have not smelled anything that stopped me cold, but have complimented strangers a lot on really great scents.

  • As always, I enjoy the passion of Sebastian’s reviews, but the short and vivid written review was very well done! Great job!

  • Sebastián s review perfect as usual!!
Thanks for review and great draw.
I like very much balsamic perfumes and with orientals note will be great.
I have not a fragance that stopped me in my track, I like o collect and always think this perfume are perfect, but may be I’ll find more attracive one.
    US

  • Like always an awesome review This perfume sounds so good with that opening of orange blossom, clary sage and frankincense and continues with that spice market aromas, must be divine. The one juice that stopped me in my track was Scent intense from Costume National. Thanks for the chance, Oakland US.

  • Bubeto_GG says:

Thank you for this draw !
As much as i like Sebastian as a reviewer , i have to disagree a bit with his review of Tolu.I had this fragrance back in late 2014 -it was a gift from mom , but unfortunately for a short period of time , because my younger cousin broke the bottle – dropped it from the second floor of the house.Barely used like .. ~10ml of this gem…max before this happen. Her being 16 back then was the thing that saved fer from my wrath Lol.
I don’t get muguet at all – a scent i’m very familiar with.On my skin at least orange blossom is the help , and not a main player , especially in the dry-down.I do get jammy rose in the dry-down too , that blends magically with the tolu balsam and the other main notes.
Also i had nice longevity , sillage and projection from my bottle – over 8-9 hours of longevity , and at least 2.5 hours of decent sillage. Different skins maybe , but on mine it was a heavy scent especially the first 2-3 hours.
The bottle that i had back in 2014 was very different compared to the one he’s holding. It was a square bottle with transparent cap and London Perfumery on the front .Found it –
I was able to sample One 5 in London , but the price was more than double the price of the others -something like ~280 pounds for the 120ml bottle .
Quite a few fragrances stopped me in my tracks-Noir de Noir by Tom Ford , Straight to Heaven Extreme By Kilian , Baccarat Rouge 540 by Maison Francis Kurkdjian , L’Air du Desert Marocain by Tauer Perfumes , original Coromandel by Chanel , Enchanted Forest by The Vagabond Prince and so on.

    Virginia

  • The 2 reviews on Tolu are incredible! Sebastian is so excited and just loving this fragrance. Michelyn’s pictures and descriptions are amazing as well. I would love to try this. Maybe L’air du Desert by Tauer has stopped me. Thank you for the try I live in the US.

  • Great review from Sebastian as always ,goes into a very good amount of detail you can almost smell it 🙂 .And it sounds amazing I was sold after reading Michelyns review ,she writes” Rich and resinous, with a melange of orange blossom, clary sage and frankincense, journey to an Indian Spice Market and inhale the intoxicating aromas of cloves, cinnamon and sweet tonka beans ” …. come on this is must try ! Can’t wait.

One fragrance that literally stopped me was norma kamalis incense. My mom received as gift I was blown away from the scent, ive loved incense fragrances ever since.

    Live in u.s.

    Thanks for giveaway

  • Nice reviews. I liked that Michelyn gave a great story and note breakdown and Sebastian gave some understanding of Tolu. I like ormonde Man and champaka
    Hope I win
    Thanks to all

  • THE FRAGRANCE SOUNDS OUTSTANDING…I DO NOT USUALLY DO THIS WHICH IS JOINING A DRAWING, BUT THE BALSAM NOTE FASCINATED ME . SEBASTION’S EXCITEMENT HOOKED ME.

  • fazalcheema says:

I had not heard of tolu note before this fragrance came and later I found tolu actually had been used in older classic fragrances. So OJ Tolu did give more popularity to tolu note. Being an oriental, I was not expecting for orange blossom to play a major role in this as Sebastian mentions. Some fragrances that stopped me in my tracks include original eau sauvage, kouros, opium, cuiron, noir de noir, oud wood, and anima dulcis. I am in US.

  • O yes. I love reinterpretation of classics made by talented perfumers. The tolu balsam became quite popular in niche perfumery today and it is easy to understand why, it is a gorgeous ingredient. I haven’t realised that this perfume was created so many years ago and for first time introduced tolu to the perfumery audience. The notes breakdown and description sounds amazing, I’d love to try this one. Last scent which made me this WOW! effect was a Lilt by Rouge Bunny Rouge. What a great green scent for tropical weather, WOW! it is marketed to woman, but I found it unisex enough to ware it. I have an address in Huston, TX

  • Having watched many of Sebastian’s video reviews there is no question to me that Sebastian has an experienced nose for scents. Thus for someone with his level of fragrance knowledge to “fall in love with it mmediately”, I know this scent is a must try.

As for Michelyn’s review, her words painted an irresistible picture in my mind and I am now determined to seek out this brand. Also, regardless of this giveaway outcome, thank you for introducing me to this site – definitely a great expert resource to have.

So far L’Ombre Dans L’Eau is the only fragrance that really stopped me on my tracks (am fairly new to this hobby though) ..but I am hoping Tolu can be the next one!

  • Scented Hound says:

Oh, my! This must be an amazing oriental fragrance, given the glorious reviews here. I would like to know how Linda Pilkington and Geza Schoen discovered the use for Tolu Balsam in fragrance since they may well be the first to do so. Intriguing. This fragrance sounds like something I would adore. Not because Sebastian does, but the marriage of herbal, floral and spice notes combined. Sweet, spicy, and woody would definitely be intoxicating and memorable as described. Yes, I have had a fragrance that stopped me in my tracks! I was in my twenties, and at an exhibit at the De Young Museum in San Francisco. Someone in the crowd of people, was wearing the most wonderful fragrance that I have ever smelled in my life. I have never smelled it since, sadly, but I will never forget that experience and how a fragrance memory can stay with you for the rest of your life! Thanks to Europerfumes for this draw! I would absolutely love to win this. My cat is on the rug and we are waving from California

  • RigdunLabro says:

Sebastian offered a detailed review of this fragrance, and his joy was contagious! I appreciate that he took the time to find visuals of tolu balsam and explain its exclusivity. I learned about tolu balsam! Michelyn’s review: wildly poetic, and left me feeling like the cat in the painting at the top of the page. Upon first sniff, so many fragrances blow me away, but most recently Korrigan by Lubin. Light, creamy, saffron, lavender. OMG! USA.

  • 1080stunts says:

Sebastian, as always, is able to inspire other his viewers about his passion that is fragrance. His description of Tolu was truly mesmerizing. I can already tell that this is a fragrance I will fall in love with!!

  • mnguyen53 says:

    Greetings from Seattle.
I love listening to Sebastian’s review and what gets me is how he presents the scent notes. Even though I’ve never tried it before, I can almost imagine it.
Similar to how Michelyn mentioned that it transports the wearer to the spice markets in India. That’s such an beautiful statement, and once again helps me imagine what’s being experienced.
The latest fragrance that made me stop in my tracks was Aventus, but back in the day, it was Cool Water.

  • Josh stanley says:

My favorite part of Sebastian’s reviews are always his enthusiasm as he’s breaking down notes and explaining vibes and smells and this video was no different. I’ve recently had an experience with a fragrance that stopped me in my tracks. I sprayed a sample of Bond no.9 Bleecker Street on my arm for the first time and didn’t think much of it. As I was walking to my car all of a sudden I got hit with a whiff of a smell that literally stopped me and I thought it was the most amazing smell ever. I was looking around to see if someone was around because I was going to ask them what they were wearing. Turns out it was me and I immediately turned around, wentback in the store and bought Bleecker Street.

  • NiceVULady says:

I really enjoyed Sebastian’s enthusiasm for this fragrance. As always, he captures the essence of the scent in his reviews in a very neat and concise manner. Michelyn’s review just draws me in with her beautiful and evocative language. “Sultry and sensual, Tolu is scent as seduction, a perfume that pulls me in and won’t let me go. ” Wow! There have been several fragrances that have stopped me in my tracks-some of the Tom Ford’s, Myrhhe Imperial, and several of those from Serge Lutens. Tolu sounds like it would be another. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the USA

  • Josh stanley says:

I also thought Michelyn’s opening line, “Plush, lush, and opulent” paints the picture of this fragrance concisely. It literally sounds like it’s a rich, spicy fragrance journey.

  • Some really good descriptors from both reviewers. Like I’ve always said, Sebastian is one of the best reviewers out there. Really breaks a scent down to the finest nuances. MIchelyn’s written review provides some great detail and emotion. Creation E definitely stopped me in my tracks.

  • Regalkismet says:

Sounds like an interesting fragrance. Thanks Sabastion for the great review and opportunity. Your passion shines through.

  • Chuck Goodpaster says:

Michelyn’s written review was very descriptive and interesting. Sebastian always gives easy to understand reviews that I trust. Hope to win this great sounding fragrance!! Thanks for ghe chance!

  • Richard Potter says:

Loved your review, Sebastian. I’ve heard nothing but raves about this one. USA.

  • lordkelwynne says:

I have only once had the chance to sample the Ormonde Jayne line and was completely smitten by it. I adore resinous scents of all sort. So I will certainly reassess this one. Thank you for this review Sebastian. And Michelyn’s comment about the luminous amber drydown has me even more curious to revisit the scent. I am on an amber love affair lately it seems. I would like to be considered for this giveaway. And thank you.

  • olleriksson says:

Like Michelyn says, journeying to an Indian Spice Market sounds lovely. I have no real interest in seeing India in person, but smelling the spice markets sounds amazing! With Sebastian, I thought it was fun to see him so excited and in love with a fragrance that isn’t new at all. Don’t know anything from OJ myself, but would love to try!

I recently smelled Moth from Zoologist and it really stopped me in my tracks. What’s funny is, it doesn’t smell at all as described to me. In my nose, and in my strange brain, I think of those big inflatable swimming toys, like the huge crocodile I had as a kid. And it’s a great memory and scent!

I have family in Florida, if I win it could be sent there. Going to visit them shortly. Thanks!

  • Harbinger says:

Loved both Sebastian’s and Michelyn’s reviews on a fragrance from a house I am not familiar with but would love to get to know…Tolu sounds luxurious! Stopped in my tracks by a fragrance worn by someone while I was shopping and I had to ask her what she was wearing because it smelled so good….Michael Kors Wonderlust! I am in the US. Thanks for this amazing draw!

  • I liked Sebastian’s reaction to that fragrance. If he loves it that means it is really good. I also like how Michelin describes a scent as an exotic journey. I would love to try this one. Thank you for a giveaway! I expoeienced similar reaction to Sebastian’s when I smelled Incident Diplomatique by Jovoy Paris. (Illinois)

  • Larry Ingram Sr says:

I’ve enjoyed Sebastian’s review of the fragrance I’ve recently purchased samples of Ormonde Jayne fragrances and am blown away by their quality and uniqueness.

  • joan mansbach says:

With Sebastian raving about a fragrance, using the words gorgeous, gorgeously, and intoxicating I knew I had to enter. My go to fragrance is Ta’if by Ormonde Jayne and I would love to experience Tolu. I adore warm, mellow scents with the ability to linger. I am a scent snob and covet my rare one of a kind fragrances. Count me in on this one. Waiting for good news in New York. Thank you.

  • I’ve smelled the oud from this house which was very beautiful, and when Sebastian made this video I know it will be nice, count me in.

  • I love Sebastian’s reviews. This sounds lovely! I’ve never smelled anything from Ormonde Jayne. The first fragrance that ever made me stop dead in my tracks was Hypnotic Poison by Dior. I was in a duty free shop in 2000 and tested Hypnotic Poison. It immediately made me weak in the knees! I bought it right away. It is still one of my most favorite fragrances ever. I’ve gone through countless bottles.

I live in the USA (Pennsylvania)

  • Gabriel Garcia says:

    Hello there
Ormonde jayne, has always amazed me, and the only one I own is, man.
Such detailed quality and performance is very good.
I’m interested in tolu balsam but because of the qualities of the element.
    Las Vegas NV USA

  • I enjoyed Sebastian’s YouTube review as he often points to lesser known fragrances. His description is very promising. I already enjoy Ormonde Jayne Man.

The written review by Michelyn was good as it was more poetic. She paints an image through words. I am very poor at this.

The last Fragrance to stop me in my tracks was Profumum Roma Ambre Aurea.

    Hope to win!

  • WaltherP99 says:

I’m such a huge fan of Linda Pilkington for her “I won’t reformulate any of my fragrances , pls don’t buy if you don’t want to” type of policy.Applauses and high praise to her.
If you’re new to Ormonde Jayne like Sebastian , or if you’ve been a fan of Tolu for years like miss Michelyn Camen YOU NEED to get your hands on the pure parfum version they called Tolu Made to Measure. In UK you can get Tolu Made to Measure in 40% concentration , and if you want to have cream della cream you can get it in 50% …YES …. FIFTY
Unfortunately us customers for whatever reason can NOT get Ormonde Jayne pure parfums they call Made-to-Measure .To me that’s a HUGE mistake.Fragrances are deeper, richer , you do get custom bottle.Sure the price is higher , but you do get a superior fragrances , and a better overall experience.I do own Frangipani Made to Measure in 50% concentation , and i feel like i own a bespoke perfume.
I don’t get the animalic note in Tolu , and i’ve sampled the regular and to 50% pure parfum version.

If someone from Europerfumes is reading the comments – i need to know why US customers , and Ormonde Jayne fans can not buy pure parfum from Made to Measure line ?

I do follow all of you @cafleurebon @lookfeelsmellgreat , @Offical_ europerfumes and @ormondejayne on IG.
    Tnx for the draw.
    Cheers from VA

  • ElizabethC says:

Hi, would absolutely love to try this perfume. I really enjoyed Sebastian’s explanation of Tolu Balsam. Love learning about the notes that make perfume! The description from Michelyn of Indian spice market and animalic prowls makes this perfume sound so wonderful. As for falling in love immediately with a scent, Saffron Veil by Phoenix Botanicals. I am in the US.

  • kggilbert says:

This perfume sounds so intriguing! Michelyns written review, with the imagery of the animalic scent with golden paws, after the description of the spice market and powery puff, gives me a lovely visual and sense of the perfume. Ormonde Jayne is a house Im just starting to dabble in. I enjoyed Sebastians review and i appreciate his explanation of the ingredients and their blending. I wasnt familiar with Tolu Balsam so I enjoyed his description and then i researched it myself. I can only remember one fragrance that has ever stopped me in my tracks and that Was King Kong Kenzo. My friends mother used to wear it and its a vivid memory. Im looking forward to trying this perfume!

  • Catanosmia says:

I imagine it takes a lot to stop Sebastian in his tracks so this must be a real beauty! I still remember the first time I smelled L’Heure Bleu and Vol de Nuit back in the ’80’s and even smelling the weaker versions that exist now reminds me of that magnificence!
I love Sebastian’s You Tube reviews!

  • Sebastian’s review, as always, makes me interested in trying new fragrances. This one is no differente, if I don’t win the giveaway I will buy a sample. What i liked in both reviews was vey rich in details. The fragrance that stopped me in my tracks was Bentley for Men Intense I really love this one.

  • James2473 says:

Great review, Michelyn! I really enjoyed your description of Tolu. Same with Sebastian’s review. I liked how he broke down the notes and gave us a quick description of what Tolu is. Thanks for the draw!

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Thanks Michelyn & Sebastian for the review. Sounds amazing! Plush, lush and opulent are the three words for an oriental perfume TOLU. I tried this and found the light version of Youth Dew.
Thanks for the generosity & the opportunity by letting my relative address in NY, US.

  • Thank you dear Michelyn for this great draw!
Thank you Sebastian – you are amazing reviewer.
    I liked this video- review.
Tolu sounds very beautiful- there 4 main players in this perfum as Sebastian mantioned- orange blossom, tolu balsam, amber and frankincense. I trust Sebastian and belive this perfume is gorgeous!
    US

  • Michelyn’s description of an Indian spice market with “intoxicating aromas of cloves, cinnamon, and sweet tonka beans” sounds lovely. I always enjoy Sebastian’s reviews and I have found that he and I have similar tastes in fragrances. When he said Tolu was “absolutely gorgeous” and “truly one of a kind” I knew I would like it. So far I’ve only sampled two fragrances from Ormonde Jayne, but I had the same “stopped in my tracks” feeling when I smelled Ormonde Woman recently. It quickly became one of my favorite fragrances. I look forward to trying Tolu, and I would love to win this bottle.

  • Ormonde Jayne is one of my all time favorites. I love white gold as well as several others. Geza Schoen is a great collaborator. I’d love to try this. Sounds great for the coming season. Thank you so much for the draw. I’m registered and in US.

  • I was stopped in my tracks by Beyond Love by Kilian the first time I smelled it years ago. As far as Tolu goes, I love Michelyn’s reference to an Indian Spice Market as I’ve sampled Tolu and completely agree! Sebastian was really wowed by it as was I and I’d love to be part of the giveaway. I’m in the U.S. Thank you.

  • newyork318 says:

I really love this genre of fragrance. The twist of Indian spices sounds pretty great. I recently ordered some samples from Ormonde Jayne but this wasn’t one of them, and haven’t yet tried anything from this house. My stopped in track fragrance is my all time favorite, L’Air du Desert Marocain.

  • jeremyn87 says:

From Sebastian’s review, I loved that he said orange blossom is pretty prominent. I’ve never heard of that balsam which Sebastian mentioned, so curious to smell what that’s like. The written review sounds like it has some hints of old-school, resinous spicy scents. Maybe something like Jacomo de Jacomo? The fragrance which stopped me in my tracks was Black Orchid. It was one of the only times I’ve ever stopped a total stranger to ask what they were wearing.
    I’m in the US, thanks

  • I could definitely sense Sebastian’s enthusiasm for this fragrance and that has me interested too! He’s smelled and reviewed many scents so to get this excited about this one, it must be really special. And from Michelyn’s review, it sounds like a warm, spicy wonder. I’ve been craving spices of late (yes, even in the summer heat!) and this one sounds like it would hit the spot. As far as fragrances that stop my in my tracks, I’ve had that experience twice, with Patricia de Nicolai’s Maharadjah and Mona di Orio’s Vanille – two more spicy scents! I’d love to give this Ormonde Jayne a home! I’m in the US.

  • I loved Sebastian’s review. I have been eyeing this brand for a while, but have not smelled anything by them yet. This would be a great opportunity too! There is something so exciting about oriental fragrances, especially that are reminiscent of India!

  • absolutely love ormonde jayne the etheral aspect of every creation !!!

just learned from sebastian that the nose behind is the one created molecules … makes sense
