Ormonde Jayne Rose Gold Parfum Review + I Never Thought I Would See The Day Draw

Linda Pilkington of Ormonde Jayne

The very best thing that can happen to a perfume reviewer is getting a surprise; that moment when you are not sure about a certain perfume, but then the reality steps in and knocks you sideways but in a GOOD way. That was the case for me with the second fragrance, Rose Gold, in the three-perfume group that comprises the “Gold Trilogy Collection” from British perfume house Ormonde Jayne. With Rose Gold, Brand Owner, Artistic Director, and Perfumer Linda Pilkington has created what to my novice nose is hand’s down, a masterpiece of olfactive art. Part of my over-the-top reaction to this extraordinary parfum is likely my heretofore love/hate relationship with Oudh. Well, truth be told mostly hate. I can count on one hand the number of oudh-centric fragrances that I absolutely adore and the thought of another migraine-inducing rose/oudh combination didn’t excite me. And then I sprayed the sample of Ormonde Jayne Rose Gold and what can I say? It blew the top of my head off with its creamy and perfect balance of T’aif Rose and warm and sexy oudh. I wore it four days in a row on both arms, until my two samples were bone dry, and that rarely happens.

Released in 2016, and following the success of  Black Gold, Ormonde Jayne Rose Gold wisely predicted the popularity of rose gold products that would boom in 2017. Accessories, Jewelry,  iPhone covers, even the most popular color of 2017 “Millennial Pink” all helped rose gold become the “it” hue of the year, and saw various shades of rose gold become firmly entrenched in the zeitgeist of the 21st Century. Rose Gold itself, as a precious metal, is an amalgam of copper alloyed with yellow gold that glows with an inner warmth and beauty.

There really is nothing quite like it. So not only on point, Ormonde Jayne Rose Gold Parfum is a perfect example of a perfumer using top-notch ingredients, and with ultimate care and determination, blending a fragrance which to my mind, is a joyous and awe-inspiring singularity amongst the few thousands of scents currently released in a year's time.

Ormonde Jayne Rose Gold smells rich and luxurious, gleaming and sparkling like a luxe piece of 22 karat gold adorned with pink or yellow diamonds. Rushing through the citrus top notes, Ormonde Jayne Rose Gold plunges immediately into the glorious heart of blowsy rose and an oudh without any barnyard or synthetic plasticky notes, is smooth as burnished copper reflected in candlelight, replete with woody nuances and an almost-but-not-quite sweet caramel/vanillic note. As the fragrance progresses the oudh steps back allowing the Taif rose to really shine with slight wisps of tea-like tannin and a slightly aquatic/watery but very intense floralcy. The drydown maintains the rose and oudh, but adds a creamy sandalwood seasoned with pink pepper, giving a cool and spicy vibe that is nothing short of delicious. Now longevity is not something I tend to focus on, but Ormonde Jayne Rose Gold happily lasts all day on my skin and living up to its name provides a scented cloud of bling with zing that has me smiling like a fool. This is one scent that is going right to the top of my “must-have-at-any-cost” list. Notes: Sicilian Lime, Orange Blossom Absolute, Bergamot, Clary Sage, Taif Rose Absolute, Carnation Absolute, Jasmine Absolute, Orchids, Water Lily, Oudh Absolute, Sandalwood Absolute, Labdanum Resinoid, Ambrette Absolute, Pink Pepper.

Disclosure: Many thanks to Ormonde Jayne for the samples. The opinions are my own.

  • I could feel the special joy that only fragrance brings in Robert’s review! I also liked the image of firelight reflecting in burnished copper. Please enter me in the draw; I live in the US

  • I have the White and Black Gold… and in those two fragrances I have to agree with Robert, (a perfumer using top-notch ingredients, and with ultimate care and determination,) Sounds as if Robert loved this one.>>”There really is nothing quite like it. • I am so oftenly attacked by the rose-oud combo that, frankly, I’ve been waiting patiently for the right hand to come along- and this may be it. What I like about Robert’s description is that it’s free of embellishments, free of hyperboles, free of unnecessarily poetic descriptors; it is clean, crisp, and very imagistic- which I, for one, already associate with the way OJ creates their juices.
Please count me in. I’m in the US.

  • I loved EVERYTHING about the review! I have and love Ormonde Jayne’s Taif and would of so love to add Rose Gold to the collection. I live in California, USA.

  • This sounds gorgeous! Love that it opens with the freshness of orange blossom, but that sandalwood drydown is what really captures my interest!
    I live in the USA.

  • As so many perfume lovers, I am patiently waiting and sampling in order to find an Oudh fragrance that explains to me what Oudh lovers find appealing. Maybe this is it! I appreciate Robert’s enthusiasm for OJ Rose Gold and would love the chance to try it myself. I am in the US.

To be so effusive about a fragrance makes me sit up and take notice. Robert’s review conjured up just about everything I love in a scent. But, I must confess I am an Ormonde Jayne loyalist and wear Ta’if as my signature. I do adore oud and the idea of my favorite flower, the incomparable rose, with oud tips the scale completely. I am excited to try Rose Gold; it sounds like a scent to treasure. Thank you! I live in the U.S.

  • I loved the review because there is nothing like discovering a fragrance which shoots one directly into heaven. I love this feeling and I could relive it completely the way he described it. Also I can completely relate to the overdose on rose oudh perfumes which are not worth mentioning. Rose Gold however is brilliant and I would love to have it.
    I live in Germany.

  • Perfect rose oud, I am in! I loved black gold and taif from Ormonde Jayne. I love Sade too. Living in the USA

  • Rose oud combo may not be the most original nowadays but with high quality materials and when nicely blended it could be a great one. Robert made it sound so wonderful. I’m looking forward to this. My favourite OJ is Man and Woman.
Thanks for the draw! I live in France.

  • Excited to try this one. I’m a big fan of rose and oud scents. Not sure I’ve specifically experienced taif rose yet. I do appreciate Robert’s excitement in finding a scent you aren’t sure about that knocks you over when you realize how good it is. I’ve recently been enjoying Tolu. US.

  • I appreciate how the article explains the appeal of rose gold beyond the trendy, when done correctly beyond a shade of pink. I think because there is copper mixed into the color, the inclusion of oud makes sense, but too much oud would seem to overpower the rose. I tried the Maison Lancôme Oud Bouquet and for me after the rose faded, all I was left with was oud which was still enjoyable, I just wanted more of a mixture of the two. I live in California.

  • Wow!!!! Robert’s review makes this fragrance sound dreamy! I have never tried an Ormonde Jayne and would be so thrilled to try this one. thank you for this amazing draw! USA

  • Mmmm, rose and Oudh! The fact it is the one for Robert (after encountering so many ‘No!’ really intrigued me. I live in the US.

  • It is true that rose gold color is finding its way into all kinds of fashion products. I enjoy a good rose creation and this seems creamy rose with notes like oudh and jasmine. My favorite from Ormonde Jayne is Nawab of Oudh. I am in US.

  • Oh I was so excited to read this review! I recall trying on White Gold by Ormonde Jayne earlier this year in Selfridges in London. I was in London for an interview and feeling incredibly nervous. I had some time to spare beforehand, so I decided to visit the perfume counters in Selfridges. I just tried White Gold on a whim. Gosh, it was absolutely beautiful! I remember walking through the busy streets afterwards in such a calm and relaxed state thanks to that beautiful powdery floral mix. Really it was that beautiful and I so wish I could have bought it. I loved Robert’s review – his unexpected surprise and over the top reaction reminded me so much of my experience. It also took my mind to a cosy, romantic candlelit room on a cold winter’s day. I now live in the USA and would so love to try this one!

  • Scented Hound says:

When the top of Robert’s head is blown off, I know that I must jump on board for this delectable fragrance. I don’t ever recall having my nose on oudh, but I “wood” certainly like to start here!
The notes all sound irresistible and are a fine collaboration of their top notch ingredients.
I like the description of rich and luxurious, creamy, warm and sexy for a fragrance. (And a few other things!) Unfortunately, I have not had the opportunity as yet to try Ormonde Jayne so I am unable to comment. Thank you Linda Pilkington and Ormonde Jayne for this opportunity! Waving from California!

  • This fragrance sounds amazing! I love rose gold jewelry and now a fragrance!I love Ormonde Jayne’s Vanilla Iris. Rose and Oudh sound fantastic. Thank you for the incredible article. Scented bling with zing! I am from California.

  • Robert really made this sound like a perfect blend! I also love rose gold anything, lol. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! USA

  • Great review from Robert. I’ve heard only good things about this house but never had the chance to smell anything from them. The notes on Rose Gold sounds really nice. I would love to try this one, thanks for the chance. Oakland US

  • I liked Robert’s enthusiasm and how he, consciously or not, sets up a parallel between oud and gold. I am in North Carolina in the U.S.A., and have never sampled anything by Ormonde Jayne.

  • Wow! Robert makes a compelling case for this fragrance. I am in the category of not liking Ouhd. I have been thrilled to see that it doesn’t seem to be the darling of the fragrance world much any more. If Robert doesn’t like Ouhd, but must have this at any cost it must be fabulous. I love Ormonde Jayne’s line, especially Iris Vanille and Ta’if. My favorite British fragrance house. I doubt that Robert uses the word “masterpiece” lightly. I’d love to win this, but if not I will for sure seek out a sample from my local shop. USA.

  • I also get tired out with all the oud centric fragrances. Robert’s review makes me hope that this perfume is worth trying. Ormonde Jayne Tolu is a favorite of mine. Here’s hoping for another. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US

  • I liked that detail about how the samples were used until bone dry – definitely a sign of a good fragrance. It sounds very interesting and I would love to smell for myself, so please enter me in the draw. I am in the US, thanks for the opportunity!

  • I like rose-oud combination even it very generic and usual. But I hope due to Geza Schouen and Linda Pilkington it will be onther, intersting “new word” in rose-oud combination.
I like Ormond Jane Ormond Man.
Thanks for interesting review and draw.

Ormonde Jayne Rose Gold smells rich, love this kind of juice.
I have not tried Ormonde so far
    Miami Florida Thanks

  • Black Gold was stunning but somehow I felt like an imposter when wearing it. This sounds like something even I could pull of. I am in Eu.

  • Thank you all so much for the kind comments. I am not kidding when I say it’s fantastic! I’ve always been kind of snobbish about oud, but Rose Gold just blew my socks off! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. xoxo
    -Robert H.

  • Thank you Robert for this review.
Beeing man I love rose in perfumery and with oud it will be perfect, and hope wearable for male.
Especially, I liked that Roberr compared this perfumr eith high quality pink diamond.
From OJ I like Royal Amber.

  • It’s a always a pleasure to read reviews where the reviewer is completely enchanted with a fragrance. I am intrigued by the tea-like tannin that appears as the fragrance unfurls.
I’ve always wanted to try Tolu from this house. I have heard many good things about it.
    I live in the USA.

  • Barbara Carter says:

Robert, you always write the most evocative reviews. This one sounds like an elegant and beautiful fragrance. I am in deep love with Ormond Jayne’s Nawab of Oudh. Another masterpiece of a fragrance. The rose is so forward in it and then the oudh creeps in quietly and becomes entwined with the very deep red rose. It is stunning. Thanks for this beautiful review, I’m pulling out my rose gold earrings today for fun due to this lovely review. I would love to try this.

  • Fantastic review! What I enjoyed most about Robert’s review was his honest opinions and excitement for the fragrance. If someone says a specific fragrance is “a joyous and awe-inspiring singularity amongst the few thousands of scents currently released in a year’s time” then it is a must have! My favorite would be Black Gold. Arkansas, USA

  • Great review! I totally empathize with Robert’s ambivalence towards oudh as I am on the fence about it myself! Ormonde Jayne’s Nawab Of Oudh is one of my all-time favorite fragrances. I’m in Los Angeles, California.

  • I like the association that Robert made between the perfume and the proliferation of gold coloured products. My favorite Ormonde Jayne is Black Gold. I am in Maryland USA. Thank you.

  • middleagedandmixed says:

Robert’s review had me at rose and Oudh — one of my favorite combinations. I have only tried Osmanthus so far. Thank you from Seattle.

  • There are many OJ fragrances that I love: Vanille d’Iris, Tsarina, Tolu, Woman & Orris Noir – so obviously, I’m a fan of this line. I haven’t had the chance to try Rose Gold yet, and the combination of Taif rose and oud is intriguing. I’m in the US.

  • Sounds like a great fragrance. Haven’t got a chance to try an Ormonde Jayne yet and this rose one sounds nice.not much experience with rose Oud combos. Enjoyed the review and thanks for the giveaway.

  • QuietlyWaiting says:

I don’t have a lot of experience with oud… but I love roses. I’d love to give this one a try, as it sounds amazing. My favorite part of the review was hearing that you wore the sample, on both arms, for days on end! Funny how much that says about the fragrance, isn’t it? (I’m in the US.)

  • I am an unapologetic rose-oudh lover. I dont care what other people say, most are snobs to the overused combo. To me, it’s still the the number one pair in perfumery. That’s why I love reading reviews from critics who are initially haters of the combo, but then are mesmerized by something so wonderful that they see themselves as converts haha! Basing from Robert’s review, this looks like a floral bouquet that’s strongly held together by an earthier woody foundation. “Ormonde Jayne Rose Gold smells rich and luxurious, gleaming and sparkling like a luxe piece of 22 karat gold adorned with pink or yellow diamonds.” …hmmm yasss i expect nothing less from this combo and from this house. Ultra lux and regality is what i like about rose-oud, and ormonde jayne. Truly, one of the movers and shakers of the perfume world. Women are rising up!

I would love to own a bottle of this beut!
    Aloha from Hawaii!!

  • I adore rose, so am excited about Robert’s review. The part that got me, was when he said he used his sample completely up! Sounds like a winner to me. I live in the US.

  • This is a great review, its so grear to be unexpectedly blown away by a fragrance, especially when your not normally a fan of the notes its composed of! I loved this honest review and the fact that Robert believes this to be a standout among the many fragrances that were released when this gem was released makes me want to put this on my “must have at ant cost” list as well! I have never tried any fragrances from Ormande Jayne and I live in the USA.

  • This is a nice review. I love that Ormonde Jayne Rose Gold smells rich and luxurious, and lasts all day on the skin. The citrus notes is something I also like.
I don’t have any favorite because I haven’t tried them yet.
    I live in California.

  • There have been several perfumes based around Rose Gold, but I’m sure that Linda’s take will be more elegant than most. By your description I think I would really like this one. Thanks for the review. USA

  • Nice job Robert !
After reading this beautiful review i do imagine a scene where i walk through a rose plantation ,drinking hot black tea , and listening “No Ordinary Love” at the same time Lol
At the moment i do not own any Ormonde Jayne fragrances.I had Tolu back in late 2014 -it was a gift from mom , but unfortunately for a short period of time , because my younger cousin broke the bottle – dropped it from the second floor of the house.Barely used like .. ~10ml of this gem…max before this happen. Her being 16 back then was the thing that saved fer from my wrath Lol.
I’ve sampled a lot of Ormonde Jayne fragrances and Tolu is by VERY far the best one…so far at least. Fenomenal/phenomenal (depends where you live) 10/10 scent .

  • I’m interested since I’ve also gotten tired of rose-oud combos. There are many that I love, but Im apprehensive of trying new ones since they’re just more of the same. If this one is good enough to really stand out, I’d love to try it though. It also sounds kind of western with the pink pepper
I havent tried any others from this house.
    Im in the US. thanks

  • Wow if Robert says must have at any cost and that it was such a surprise it blew the top of his head off – I must try this too as admire Robert’s taste! Please enter me into this generous draw-thank you so much! I have never tried the Ormonde Jayne although I’ve heard great things – In the US

  • I am a huge fan of Black Gold and after reading Robert’s review I must try this one as well! Rose is hit or miss with me but I usually like rose/oud combos so this one will likely be a winner. I’m in the U.S. Thanks!

  • I am an oudh-rose lover, in all it’s kind of forms. Seeing oud paired with taif rose, citruses and florals is a very interesting take.
If Robert says that Rose Gold is a “must have at all costs” is an incredible compliments for this creation.
From the ones I tried, Ambre Royal is my favorite.
    Thank you for the review.
    I’m in the EU.

  • I’m such a huge fan of Linda Pilkington for her “I won’t reformulate any of my fragrances , pls don’t buy if you don’t want to” type of policy.Applauses and high praise to her.
Our bearded editor editor Robert was obviously impressed by Rose Gold – “a masterpiece of olfactive art” … “smells rich and luxurious, gleaming and sparkling like a luxe piece of 22 karat gold adorned with pink or yellow diamonds” Add Sade to the mix and i’m intrigued.I’ll have to sample it.
I do own Frangipani Made to Measure in 50% concentation in custom bottle , and i feel like i own a bespoke perfume.
Pure parfum versions they called Made to Measure. In UK you can get not all,but some of Ormonde Jayne fragrances in 40% concentration , and if you want to have cream della cream you can get … 50% …YES …. FIFTY % concentration.
Unfortunately US customers can not buy Made to Measure line-for now at least.I sincerely hope Ormonde Jayne will do something about this.
Thank you Linda Pilkington , Ormonde Jayne and CaFleurebon for this draw , and Robert for his nice review.
    Cheers from VA

  • This enthusiastic review makes Rose Gold sound like a magnetic, easily lovable perfume. The prominence of Taif rose that Robert picked up on bodes well, ’cause OJ Taif is my favorite of the ones I’ve tried from this line! Incidentally, I also love rose gold jewelry… and I am a millenial, lol, but my first exposure to rose gold was my mom’s engagement ring, so I view the coppery tones as more timeless than trendy. I’m in the US, thanks for the draw.
