Olivier Durbano Heliotrope #8, The Stone of Intuition + ÇaFleureBon 8th Anniversary (part 2) Draw

The Magician Tarot Card – Universal Waite Tarot Deck

Eight years ago we posted our first article on ÇaFleureBon (pronounced Sah Fleur Bon): An interview with Michel Roudnitska on Ethical Perfumery  where I asked Michel the question “Michel, the world of fine fragrance seems to be in turmoil. There seems to be a lack of moral principles amongst not only the industry but many perfumers. What needs to be done?He went on to answer my question with four points that were necessary to elevate fragrance in the 21st century.  “There must be a reduction of the number of “clone” perfumes launched each year, cluttering the market. Fine fragrance must concentrate and focus on true creative and qualitative creations with an authentic approach bringing real meaning and spiritual value to perfumery”. When I read Michel’s words on the true creativity and spiritual value of perfumery, I immediately think of Olivier Durbano whose fragrances are not only beautiful and unique on the skin but are scents for the soul. Olivier Durbano is a magician, an alchemist and an artist; he is unlike any perfumer I have met as his very presence soothes and elevates.

Michelyn Camen of Cafleurebon and Olivier Durbano at Esxence 2015

He is also my friend of 8 years. Senior Editor Lauryn Beer wrote this about Olivier Durbano after meeting him last year “His perfumes, all made by hand in Grasse, find harmonies in the natural word and the spiritual and reflect the materials that inspire them:  the crystalline light of cut gemstones; the weighty opacity of polished rock; the interwoven smells of forest, flora and earth. Durbano’s perfumes invoke color and emotion and, while they display restraint and balance, they are personal rather than classical; creations of light, nature and the human soul.”  –Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief

His collection Olivier Durbano Bijoux & Parfums de Pierres Poemes (Stone Poem Perfumes) are hand made by Olivier who infuses each with a gemstone. Here is his message on our 8th anniversary

“Cafleurebon 8 Years with Heliotrope #8 (created in 2012) : The Heliotrope stone or the precious stone of Babylon,  was used in Magic for three centuries in ancient Babylon, to explain oracles… Stone of intuition…Number 8, universally known to be the number of cosmic balance, a totalising number, symbol of completed entirety. Lying 8, mathematical sign of infinity. Red is the birth stone, of life, energy and vitality; it’s the starting force, the spark of humanity’s relationship between the earth and the sky.  For you, Michelyn and CaFleureBon, you are  Perfume’s Babylon of modern times…With love, Olivier Durbano"

Notes: Elemi incense, oliban, ginger, red mandarin, angelica, red pepper, saffron, magnolia, nagarmotha, heliotrope, myrrh, cedar wood, sandalwood, musk, ambergris, benzoin

I appréciate a lot a craftsman’s approach in any field. It’s great to know that there’re still passionated perfumers who treat perfume-creating process as an art , going further than just being crowd-pleasers producers of perfumery stuff. Olivier Durban seems to be one of craftsman perfumers as described in the interview, bravo! That been said , it’s the first time i’ve learnt his name (yes, the there’s still a lot for me to discover in the world of perfumes)).
The Caffleurebon team really do an enormous job. I’m following a few other great perfumery blogs but it’s the only one that contributes great stuff to the followers with such frequency: i literally visit in here every day)))
    I’m in Switzerland.
    Thank you!

  • I recently got to know your blog and read it with pleasure. Thanks you! I’m from Ukraine

  • Love the possibility of the listed notes. Winning something hand customized would be special. US

  • I agree with previous commentator- Cafleurebon led by Michelyn does so great, hard work. So many beautiful, very informative articles, videos and great draws. Thank you, dear Michelyn and Cafleurebon team for all great job, that you do for all perfume- lovers in the world.

  • I like the Magician tarot card. The Magician has the ability to create lovely things. I am impressed with Olivier Durbano’s philosophy about the creation of perfume. I agree that there are too many “clones” and flankers. I have not bothered sampling flankers in years and find that my interest in companies producing them has all but disappeared. In the US.

  • Happy Anniversary! I have not had the opportunity to test anything from Olivier, but Heliotrope looks really eye-catching. Love the colour! I wonder how it smells! Thanks for the draw!

  • How profound were Michels remarks those 8 years ago.. I have been blessed beyond words from experiencing CaFleureBon. I have gained friendships, eperienced fragrances that I have feel in love with, not only the fragrance but the creator of those fragrances as well. Olivier is one of those. When you can feel the energy that goes into a work you know it is a gift.
Thanks to all Past, Present & Future writers on CaFleureBon for sharing your perspective into fragrance… It has certainly broadened me. Thanks also to Michelyn for her never ending knowledge, expertise and professional manner in which she never faulters. Congratulations to Team CaFleureBon for 8 faboulous and creative years.

  • Congrats again on the 8th anniversary! The name Héliotrope made me think of powdery almond fragrances like L’Heure Bleue, but apparently it’s something totally different! Thanks for the chance to try it out! I live in France.

  • Chocolate Marzipan says:

Wow! The bottle! the color! the notes! Congratulations again, Cafleurebon! What a gorgeous tribute from Olivier on your anniversary! I reside in the United States.

  • What an honor!
Happy 8th: may there be many more to come.
I feel the truth of description deeply. Intention, relationship mean more to me than mere juice, flacon; a perfumer’s intention ideally infuses his work and can be sensed immediately.
So it is with Olivier’s jewelry and his perfumes.
I would be thrilled to wear either.
    I live n Boston.
    Many thanks for the opportunity!

  • Happy anniversary! Cafleurebon is a blessing for us the perfume lovers and i am happy i can be a part of this community. I didn’t have the chance to test a lot from Olivier Durbano, but i will try them for sure after the beautiful words of Lauryn “Durbano’s perfumes invoke color and emotion, and while they display restraint and ballance they are personal rather than classical; creations of light, nature and the human soul.”

  • Happy Anniversary, ÇaFleureBon team! While I’m not new to the world of perfumery, I’ve started following a couple of international perfume blogs only recently. The reason why CFB has become special to me is not only you’ve got extremely gifted authors but also beautiful taste in art. It’s always a pleasure to see a painting I love in a review.
Many happy returns – times infinity if possible 🙂 – of the day!

Speaking of infinity: Olivier Durbano’s heartfelt message for Michelyn and ÇaFleureBon says a lot about the way he thinks of perfumes. Never tried any of his perfumes yet but boy, do I want to! Thank you for this magical draw!

    I live in Russia.

  • The vanilla scent of heliotrope is phenomenal. After reading all the additional notes, I’m sure the fragrance is also. Thank you, Olivier Dubano and ÇaFleureBon, for this fabulous draw. I’m in the USA, good luck to all.

Happy Anniversary ÇaFleureBon. Love the way you elevate our passion for fragrances in a creative and inovative way. Love the notes listed and admire the craftsmanship Olivier puts into his fragrances. I Live in Portugal.

  • Happy anniversary! Love the red juice. One of my favourite perfumes is La Fille de Berlin, which also has a gorgeous rose-coloured liquid. Writing from Melbourne, Australia.

  • Like the fragrance Olivier composes Cafleurebon is just as great. His exotic scents are priceless and go a long way. Extraits are where it’s at and well worth it. Thanks for the draw from Hawaii

  • Such a wise man. When I read that he feels perfumers needs to reduce the number of clones I felt that he truly understands the soul of someone who wants to have their fragrance transport them and give them an “experience”. Yes, I want to have a personal fragrance, not a classic. I always thought of perfume as just part of my morning routine, just splash something on and go. Now I look at my small collection and think “how do I want my fragrance to make me feel today?” How fortunate we are to have you showcase these wonderful artists. Thanks for the chance! USA.

  • Congratulations on 8 years! You are a wonderful resource on all things fine fragrance. I would love to try Olivier Durbano and the notes in this one really draw me especially the saffron and magnolia. How rich it must be!!

  • thank the internet for perfume blogs! would love to try heliotrope 8, I visited Grasse when I studied in Avignon for a semester in college, before I ever read about perfume on the internet, and it was wonderful. I’m familiar with 3 Olivier Durbano fragrances – own Black Tourmaline – it’s a masterpiece , and a must have for any fraghead ,plus 50ml decant of Amethyst (50/50 split with a friend) – love both , but if you want me to be honest i don’t like Turquoise…at all. It’s herbaceous-salty … not my thing.

  • Happy anniversary and all the best to Cafleurebon team,
especially to Michelyn Camen who does a great job with true determination, artistic dedication and will. She and her team have offered a great deal of amazingly well written articles filled with a great deal of information. Cafleurebon is not only a perfume blog that deals with perfume notes and perfume creations. It is a perfume blog that deals with the background of a perfume. with history, sociology and arts like a humanities highly rated class.
I read Cafleurebon not only because I love perfume but because I acquire knowledge of different civilizations, cultures and people with different uses and practices through their use of perfumes and their notes.
I very much like Olivier Durbano’s creations. I have experienced Black Tourmaline and founded it a very interesting scent.
    I live in EU.

  • Eight years of Cafleurebon is an excellent moment to express a huge recognition to all the editors, and writers who bring us new articles every day. Appreciations and thanks to all the perfumers who participate in the countless giveaways. It is priceless to read reviews of their perfumes again. Cafleurebon had an important impact on my love for American Artisans. It is so good to be here all the time.

I am glad that Olivier Durbano is in the anniversary’s post because he’s dear, generous, and frequent guest here. I know some of his beautiful perfumes, being familiar with his Pierres Poèmes concept.

I am in the EU, Croatia. Thanks. Happy Anniversary to all of you!

  • Thank you! And Happy Anniversary to all!

Thank you CFB for your eight years of contributions to the fragrance community. You educate, elucidate, build bridges, and help bring awareness to artisans and new releases while simultaneously helping people try world-class scents when they might not have been able to otherwise. Thank you!

Thank you to Olivier Durbano for your artistry and sensitivity. Amethyst is one of my favorite stones and your scent added such resonance to the experience. I don’t know how to describe it exactly but to me some fragrances open up another dimension, another level of experience overlaid….
I’m fascinated by the connection to the energies of different stones but have not had the chance to try most of the line. They look beautiful, and Heliotrope especially with the red and resinous and spicy aspects. I didn’t know it was a stone at all! So I learned another new thing from reading CFB.
