Vintage Maison Dorin Cosmetic Label

Maison Dorin is an esteemed cosmetics and perfume house that was made the official purveyor to the Royal Court of Versailles in 1780, largely thanks to the influence of Marie Antoinette . The House was known internationally for inventing the lipstick bullet and powder compact as well as fine fragrance, but for nearly a century has not been widely known  in the US. In 1998, Bashar and Imane Nasri purchased the company with an eye to resurrecting the legacy of the House. Using modern techniques, but with careful attention to the properties of the historical fragrances, they have created a line of perfumes that speak of traditional French perfumery and to their own Middle Eastern heritage.

dorin flacons

This House’s flacons are heavy glass with a pleasing, sensual shape based on the iconic silhouette of the Eiffel Tower embellished in 14 k gold. The bottles exude opulence, representing the consistent quality present in the raw materials and careful blending. In sampling these scents over the last  few weeks, I have come to know this line and its stye and I get a sense of the nobility of La Belle Époque (1871-1914) when Dorin was the talk of Paris, Brussels, Moscow and Chicago at the Fragrance and Cosmetic Exhibitions where they won many awards.

"Ohh for the Touch of a Vanished Hand" by Charles Edward Perguini

Imagine a 19th century noblewoman, wife of a prominent Lord currently abroad, is readying her household to receive royal visitors from the distant Eastern deserts. Floral (from the Un Air de Paris collection, 2008) opens with rose, jasmine and ylang, this is all heart and rich comfort. Flowers arranged perfectly, everything gleaming with spices simmering and wood smoking in the background – this greets you with a warm floral embrace, welcoming you into its heart sincerely and sweetly. In what should have been a powder bomb dry-down, iris, heliotrope and musk mesh to add just the right amount of soft floral silkiness with delightful delicacy to skin. Very proper, yet genuinely amicable, this Lady is a treasure! Sillage: good. Longevity: above average.

Notes: Moroccan rose, Egyptian jasmine, ylang ylang, narcissus, sandalwood, cinnamon, clove, Florentine iris, heliotrope and musk.

As the Lady attends to the manor, seeing fastidiously to every detail, her daughters Jasmin and Rose (from the Un Air de Damas collection from 2008, composed by Nejla Barbir) follow behind their mother and emulate her grace and bearing. Dressed simply, in bright sheer frocks woven of crisp bergamot, lush greens and elegant white musk, you can tell these two are sisters; yet they are so very different: the fairer having the charming smile and outgoing playfulness, while her more introverted ruddier sibling keeps to herself, and blushes a lot. Rose dreams of a handsome prince who carries her away, to an exotic faraway kingdom while Jasmin longs only to be joined by her heart’s desire. Both of these perfumes are soft-spoken yet eloquent florals, framed with citrus and woody base notes, having slightly above average sillage and good longevity.

Jasmin Notes: bergamot, citrus, jasmine Baladi, musk, dry woods.

Rose Notes: bergamot, lily-of-the-valley, Rose Damascena and musk.

"Bedouins" by John Singer Sargent

Maison Dorin released the Un Air d’Arabie collection in 2010, also created by Nejla Barbir, centering on more exotic oriental notes while maintaining a European finesse.  This collection could truly be a delegation of scents and sensations from the mysterious East. Oud, which I expected to be wild and feral, was instead used to drape smoky veils over a dainty and nubile rose. The women are clad and veiled heavily, showing only their dark and intense gazes, just as the scent of maiden roses hide and are protected by layers of woody and aromatic shadows. Musk captures that untamed desert spirit of a warrior in notes of rose, patchouli and chamomile typifying valor, courage and vigor. Just musky enough to entice, while being clad in garments scented with sacred wood smokes and warm resins, these are fierce protectors that have a gentle passion about them. The sisters are in awe as the procession enters the gates watching the amazing panoply of both the strange and exotic characters in the entourage.

Oud Notes: rose, rose and oud wood

Musk Notes: chamomile, rose, cedar, patchouli, labdanum, sandalwood, frankincense, guaiac wood, musk & vanilla.

As the procession stops and the carriage opens, the lovely Taïf Rose, also from the Un Air D'Arabie collection, appears, like a dusky sultana, regally adorned and colorfully draped in silken scarves. Her complexion dark and her features sultry, she is at once engaging yet utterly foreign and mysterious. A delightful spiciness surrounds her, as she moves, and you can sense she is scented with fine oils and rare aromatics. Her protective soft leather armor is almost undetectable beneath her shuffling layers. After all is said and done, this Yemeni inspired rose scent finishes with hints of animalic musk, tamed with aromatic chive and boozy vanilla. Creamy and spicy this floral captures oriental woody and incense notes, weaving them into a shimmering material that flows gently on the breeze and releases teasing hints of sensuality in its wake. Sillage: very good. Longevity: average.

Notes: chamomile, freesia, Ta’if rose, saffron, leather, styrax, amber, patchouli, sandalwood, musk, vanilla, castoreum and chive.

  • Lovely reviews again. I’ve been in a Forsyte Saga frame of mind lately and the description of Floral sounds perfect. Thanks for the generous opportunity! I’m in the US.

  • Musk appeals the most, as I consider myself “a fierce protector that has a gentle passion” ;-P. I reside in the US.

  • While all sound lovely (and what a bottle!), Floral sounds the best to me. I live in the USA, and thank you for the draw!

  • Excellent article, as always! The bottle is beautiful and the fragrances sound just as wonderful, especially the rose. Count me in the draw and I live in the US. Thanks.

  • What beautiful reviews! I am most drawn to the taif rose and the musk. I live in the US- thanks for this opportunity! –Tati

  • Jessica Marie says:

I do reside in the United States and have never heard of these perfumes! Taif Rose, Oud, and Musk interest me! I am already a huge fan of eastern oud and curious about any perfume that has it as an ingredient because it is such a diverse note and varies highly from different parts of the world. The combination in Taif Rose sounds amazing with the leather twist as well! Thank you for such amazing drawings!

  • OMG – they all sound beautiful.I have been wanting to try this house for a while now and would love to have a chance to sample them.Taif Rose sounds amazing ( but Musk is calling me as well since I recently started learning more about the different types of musk fragrances and trying to find some that I love ) I live in the US.Thank you for this draw.

  • Yes, they do indeed all sound amazing! Thanks for the review. I’m going to have to say Musk would be my first choice. I’m in the US. Thank you!

  • rivercitylizzy says:

I loved reading this review–such a richly woven tapestry of sensory impressions! Fantastic!

Ta’if Rose, holy wow, that sounds amazing! I am on the US.

  • I really enjoyed reading this review … the way you present and associate each perfume by its notes with a person viewed either in a painting or in real life in a specific historical context…
Dear Tama and Michelyn, each review is a lesson in Art History. The History of Perfume itself and the House it represents.
I write to you not to participate (since I am in EU) but just to express my joy for this article.
Congratulations once again and thank you both for this lovely article.

  • I love that an old house has been resurrected. All the compositions look interesting, but I’m most curious to try Ta’if Rose. I know this rose is legendary and I want to become familiar with it. I’m in the U.S. Thanks for the draw.

  • Valentine girl says:

I thoroughly enjoyed the visual imagery of a procession in the progression of the fragrances reviewed; the notes in Musk sound most appealing to me! I am from the USA.

  • I can’t decide between Floral and Rose. They both sound gorgeous! I live in the US and thank you for the draw.

  • I imagine these are great fragrances. Thank you for this draw. I live in the US and I would love to try Musk. Un Air d’Arabie Musk speaks to me the most out of the fragrances, but the sampler would be a great chance to try them all.

  • Oud will probably appeal to me most and then may be rose…it was a tough decision..even Jasmin looks quite an experience. I am in the US

  • I’m on the hunt for the perfect rose scent right now, so the Taif Rose seems exciting to me! I’m in the US. Also–those bottles are beautiful!

  • Oh, Taif Rose sounds marvelous, but would love to try them all: I’m always looking for my perfect rose…which I haven’t found yet! I live in the US and thanks so much for the draw!

  • Please don’t enter me in the draw because I already purchased the Air de Arabie sampler set. I just wanted to comment on how John nailed these. Oud is one of my least favorite notes, at least in fragrances with it in the name (I agree with Tama’s assessment from her rant and rave New Year post that used as part of a palette it can be appealing). I was shocked to try out the Dorin Oud and find it was an immediate love. Maybe it’s the quality of the raw materials but I never thought that note could be refined before I tried this.

  • I think I might like Rose best, with the lily of the valley note together with the rose. A most enjoyable article and beautiful artwork, as well. I am in the US.

  • I bought the Un Air D’Arabie set from Twisted Lily (such a fantastic store!) and I love the whole set. I sometimes layer them too. No need to enter me in the draw, I just wanted to affirm how lovely this line is. The bottles are stunning too.

  • Rose is my favorite note (at this time), so I would apply for Taif Rose.
But I would give a ride to Un Air d’Arabie, as well.
    Gentiana (non US)… but, really, why… ?

  • Gorgeous article – the art choices and John’s storytelling-like descriptions of these scents make me want to try the whole house. I feel most drawn to the Taif Rose and Musk. I’m in the U.S. Thank you for the opportunity to try these!

  • I love rose with some spiciness added, so Rose Taif sounds appealing to me. Thank you for a fun article to read and another great draw. In the U.S.

  • I reside in the U.S. Thank you for the lovely reviews and give-away . I am most drawn to Maison Dorin Musk from un Air d’Arabie..as I love resinous scents and patchouli . And those bottles ? to.die.for.

  • Musk and Taif Rose are intriguing me. Love the chive/castoreum combo in the TR! Would love to smell that. I’m in the US. Thank you!

  • USA
Thanks for the reviews and draw! And the lovely art.

Oud and Musk appeal to me the most, though it might be the Sargent art (which is amazing in person! one of my favorites ever) . I love the warmth and strength and mystery in their descriptions.

  • These all found beautiful, but I’d have to go with Jasmin, yo welcome what I hope will soon be spring!

  • If those bottles look like the Eiffel Tower then I have a dirty mind. I have the floral pack including especially the masterpiece Fullah and would love to broaden my acquaintance with this wonderfully retro-moderne line.

  • I had never heard of this house until reading this article. I would love to win this draw! I reside in the USA. I would most like to sample the Un Air d’Amour Pour Madam and the Un Air d’Arabie Musk. Fragrantica has a long list of perfumes by this company, but surely doesn’t look like they are easy to find.

  • The Rose from the Un Air de Damas Cloeection from 2008 sounds absolutely divine to me! I live in the United States. Thank you for this opportunity.
