Niche Perfume Review: L’Artisan Parfumeur Jour de Fête + Olivia Giacobetti’s Summer Confection Draw

jour de fete fair l'artisan cafleurebon

Summer Fair by Camille Nicolas Lambert

In order to make way for new releases, L’Artisan Parfumer has had to discontinue fragrances from time to time including some favorites amongst the perfume community. They are committed to reintroducing some beloved scents each year as limited editions. This spring they have chosen to bring back Olivia Giacobetti’s ethereal summer day, Jour de Fête, originally released in 2003.

Warm-weather fragrances tend to fall into the light floral or citrus categories, but Jour de Fête stands on its own as a spring and summer scent like no other. Jour de Fête, with its notes of almond and vanilla, is a rarity in perfume: a spring gourmand. It is based on a confection known as “dragée”, which is a sweet with a hard shell. A classic form of dragée is a Jordan almond, which has the crunch of the sugar shell and the nutty, slightly bitter whole almond center. The name of the perfume references a festival day, when such treats would be eaten.

The perfume, although based on a sugary treat, is not itself particularly sweet. Because one of the notes is wheat, it has a floury aspect to it, and with the natural-smelling almond notes, it is more like an almond croissant than marzipan. I am having a small flashback to my childhood days of playing with a simple clay made of flour and salt. Throughout, a subtle breeze of iris adds just a touch of flowers and earth. This perfume is intensely comforting, a characteristic usually reserved for heavier, warmer winter perfumes. The longevity is good for a lighter fragrance, and I got nice wafts throughout, until the final vanillic drydown. One evening, when I thought it was long gone, I got a little puff of this soft perfume, and it made me smile. It is more tenacious than it might seem.

Living on the Northern California coast, it never gets very hot, which is good because I think that as translucent as Jour de Fête is, it could be a little doughy for me in extreme heat. I would definitely wear it when it is sunny, breezy, and warm. It is unlike anything else I have in my collection, and is a nice change from the usual pretty florals and bracing citruses in my summery fragrance collection.

Notes: almond, iris, wheat and vanilla

I received my review sample from L’Artisan Parfumeur.

Tama Blough, Deputy Editor

Jour de Fête will be available in March on the L’Artisan Parfumeur website and at select stockists for $105 for 100 ml. Olivia Giacobetti

Editor's Note:  My first exposure to Olivia Giacobetti's work was L'Artisan Parfumeur's Premier Figuier which I bought at The L'Artisan Parfumeur shop on Madison Avenue in New York City. I still have a few drops in the bottle. Ms. Giacobetti's signature is sheerness and luminosity that still feels very modem, although many of her fragrances were composed nearly two decades ago.  There is a precision and delicate artistry to all her perfumes that give Ms. Giacobetti a unique fragrance print.  Her fragrances for L'Artisan Parfumeur are: L'Eau d'Artisan (1993, discontinued), Premier Figueur (1994), T Pour Un Ete (1996), Drole de Rose (1996), Navagar (1997, discontinued), L'eau de Floriste (1997 limited and discontinued)  Dzing! (1999), Passage D'Enfer (1999), Fleur de Carrotte (2000, discontinued), Tea for Two (2000, discontinued), Thé des  Sables (2001, discontinued), Saffron Troublant (2002) Un Bouquet en Mai (2001, discontinued), Jour de Fête (2003, limited edition 2014), Premier Figuer Extreme, (2004), Extrait de Songe (2005), and Fou D'Absinthe (2006).. – Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief

  • I have been very interested in trying out Jour de Fete, as I am completely intrigued by that wheat note! I would also like L’Artisan to bring back Tea for Two! Please enter me into this drawing, I am located in Connecticut, USA.

  • I am someone is is very excited about this re issue. jour de Fete is in my overall top 10. It’s such a soft warm everyday scent. I love it. The other L’Artisans that I would like to see again are the mood scents. A few of those were also wonderful. I think they were just available in the smaller 15 ml bottles.

  • Everything about this post is so soft, pretty and appealing, as another snowstorm swirls outside. I drained my sample of Jour de Fete long ago, so I’m glad to see it return. I’d like to see Tea for Two come back, too. I’m in the US, thanks for another generous draw.

  • I am in the US. I am delighted to hear that L’Artisan is reissuing discontinued scents. Although Jour de Fete is lovely, I wish that Tea for Two were this year’s reissue. I miss it so much.

  • Based on the notes listed, would the slight bitterness of almond and the nuttiness of wheat counterbalance the sweet aspects nicely? I also love confusing my non-fume-head friends by wearing feminines like this.

I’m in the US and thanks for the draw!!!!

  • I live in the US. I’m excited for this to return! I’ve heard so much about it and I’ve started to really enjoy almond notes in perfumes, and it’s a Giacobetti scent. 🙂 thank you!

  • Jour de Fête, with notes of almond and vanilla (gourmand smells to me sound lovely and this one reminds me of a sunny spring day spend at the Park of Joy).
It must smell wonderful and I hope to have the chance to experience it once it arrives here in Greece.
By the way “dragée”, which is a sweet with a hard shell” is what we people here in Greece offer to wedding ceremonies to the people who come to the church and follow the Holy communion ceremony of the wedding couple. In this way we treat the couple’s guests with that kind of sweet which we really tastes wonderful.
Just writing to express my wish for a draw with such lovely smells worldwide if possible 🙂
Thank you for this lovely review dear Tama.

  • I’m very happy to see this return! Like many others, I miss Tea for Two. There are a couple in that list above that I can’t remember trying – Thé des Sable and Un Bouquet en Mai. So I wouldn’t mind a reissue of those too, since I adore Ms Giocobetti’s work. I’m in the US.

  • I’ve never tried this before, but it sounds like something I might love. I would want L’Artisan to bring back Bois Farine, Drole de Rose, Safran Troublant, Tea For Two, La Haie Fleurie, and Bouquet en Mai. I’m in the US.

  • This sounds wonderful and I would love to try it! I have an old sample of Tea for Two which is almost gone, so I’d love them to bring that back. U.S.

  • Nathalie Foy says:

I’d love to try this. I discovered her Dzing! in a (now-closed) perfume store in Toronto and am a HUGE fan. I went in looking for perfumes that smelled of books or libraries. The shop owner suggested that the hay notes in Dzing! might evoke what I was looking for, and he was absolutely right. I now have several of her scents, and Ilove that each of them has something unexpected and unusual. I’d love to see Tea for Two brought back.

  • I, too, would vote for Tea for Two and would not wait to buy it this time around. Jour de Fete does sound like a lovely way to usher in spring when it finally comes! Thanks for the draw. U.S.

  • I’ve not tried this one but will try to track it down, it sounds amazing and makes me think of longed-for spring. I’m in the US.

  • hotlanta linda says:

Hmmm – Jacinthe needs to make a come back 🙂 I love almond soap, so I need to try this! 🙂 We are in the USA!

  • I would like the opportunity to try this because I enjoy almond notes in fragrances.
Tea for Two – my precious. Luckily I have a back-up but would still like to see it brought back. I am in the US.

  • I happen to be excited about everything Olivia Giacobetti has done for L’Artisan, as I have just been introduced to her talents. What a remarkable career! I am definitely looking forward to this re-launch of 03’s Jour de Fete’s sugar almond dragees…(my beloved almonds!). Thank you Tama for the great article and the opportunity for the draw. I am in the U.S.

  • Yes, I’m excited! I love gourmands but find them unsuitable for warm weather, and have never tried Jour de Fete.

I hope the execs at L’artisan read this and other online perfume sites, because Tea for Two is beloved! Maybe not by the masses, but. . .I fervently hope they bring it back some season!! Believe it or not, I emailed them when I used up what I’d had left of the scent. . .silly me.

I’m in the US. Thanks for the fabulous draw!

  • Definitely happy that Jour de Fete is coming back, even as a limited edition. I would also like Tea for Two to make a return visit. (Glad I have Fleur de Carrotte, as it’s unique and not out there anymore.) I am in the US.

  • I’d love to see Fleur de Carrotte back. That’s just too awesome! I’m in the US and would love to win this draw!

  • Put me in the “wish T42 would come back” camp. Also would love to see Vanilia make a comeback…

I’m in the USA and wold love win!

  • Jour de Fete is one of the fragrances I have been dying to try! I love almond in perfume and this sounds perfect to me. Since my finances have just taken a surprising nosedive and I can’t buy perfume for a while, I would love to be entered in the draw. I am in the US.

  • Yes, I’m definitely excited about the return of Jour de Fete. And it gives me hope that maybe one day, L’Artisan’s Tea for Two (one of my all-time favorites) will reappear. Fingers crossed! I’m in the US, and I’d very much like to be entered in this draw. Thank you!!

Tea for Two!! Please bring it back along with Vanilia, such a pretty, amazing vanilla scent. I never tried Jour de Fete but would love to. Thanks for this draw and I am in the US.

  • helical gnome says:

Actually L’Artisan brought back last year if I remember correctly, one of my favorite discontinued scents: ananas fizz so I know (or I want to believe) it is only a matter of time for them to bring back tea for two. I know we all miss it.
Thanks for this draw. I think jour de fete sounds delicious and interesting for the spring that appears to be so far away.
    I am in the US

  • I never tried this one but it sounds very pretty. I wish Tea for Two would come back. I live in the US

  • I am excited about Jour de Fete, but I would also love to see Framboise Tralala / Sautes d’Humeur Joyful Rire. I am in the US!

  • USA
Thanks for the review and draw!
I am pretty psyched for the reissue, but even more for the future possibility of Tea for Two!
Sounds very interesting, and apparently I love all the L’Artisans she has composed except the LE/discons I never got to smell! Safran Troublant is one of my year-round favorites, I wonder how they’d compare in the heat…

  • I’m really happy Jour de Fete is coming back! Just thinking about all of the discontinued L’Artisan fragrances is making my head spin…. perhaps Saffron Troublant should be next? 🙂

  • I like that they revisit old favorites. I would love to see Oeillet sauvage or Jacinthe des Bois reissued again. As long as I am thinking about wishes, I wish they would offer discovery sets where you can choose 15ML bottles.

  • i do not know how it is possible that i have never smelled this!!!
( i think i might have a sample somewhere. i must find it!)
and i *also* have never smelled tea for two, and would like to.
if the rumors about discontinuing dzing! were ever true, apparently it’s around now. if it were not, i would definitely want that one back.

  • I’m certainly excited about this one! Breezy almond fragrances are my forte. Hopefully, they won’t sell out soon!!!

  • I am excited about Jour de Fête as I am a fan of Olivia Giacobetti, but also would like to see the return of Tea for Two. I live in the U.S.A.

  • Fazal Cheema says:

The one discontinued L’Artisan fragrance i would like to see reissued is Navegar. I am in the US..I have Olivia’s masterpieces for L’Artisan such as Tea for Two

  • I love vanilla fragrances so I’m very happy to see Jour de Fete! I’m in Canada. Thanks for the draw.
