Niche Fragrance Review: Parfumerie Generale Private Collection L’Oiseau de Nuit + Pierre Guillaume’s Nightbird Draw

Have you ever stood in late autumn and watched a flock of blackbirds rise in perfectly synchronized unison, aloft in search of warmer climes?  Those of us who are earthbound in the northern hemisphere feel the heavy weight of gravity more this time of year, as obligations and commitments prevent us from flying towards the sun.  Fortunately, Parfumerie Generale’s Private Collection L’Oiseau de Nuit by Pierre Guillaume is here to warm our souls and help our spirits soar.

L’Oiseau de Nuit means nightbird in French. The inspiration for it is said to be the song of nocturnal creatures, but while it has all the glamour and intrigue of an evening fragrance, its initial impression is very sunny.  Though not mentioned in the official notes, I get a strong impression of juicy citrus, cut with a touch of the bitter herb of davana that throws the sweetness into sharp relief the way shadows in paintings do for light.

Over time, the leather note takes over and reins the fragrance into definitive nighttime territory, bringing to mind sunset cocktail hours on the Pacific coast where the warm colors of the spectrum melt into the dark ocean.  Imagine a boozy kiss on a mid-century sectional leather sofa as the clink of cocktail glasses peal in the background, where the warmth you feel comes directly from the person next to you.

Eventually, L’Oiseau de Nuit becomes a smooth, creamy amber with a touch of caramel.  The bitterness and leather are still present, but they are submissive to the finest labdanum I have ever smelled, sweetened ever-so-slightly with benzoin.  At this point it assures me that while I may miss the sun, there are very real pleasures to be had in the night.

Parfumerie Generale Private Collection L’Oiseau de Nuit, Pierre Guillaume, 2009

L’Oiseau de Nuit is part of Pierre Guillaume’s Private Collection, which could be considered the couture line of the Parfumerie Generale brand due to its purposely limited distribution.  Introduced in 2009, it is not widely known even among perfumistas.  This both pleases me because I have an obsession with exclusivity, and saddens me because it is one of the most straight-up gorgeous, intoxicating scents I have ever encountered.  Sillage is moderate but enough to garner compliments wherever I wear it.  Longevity is excellent, and through every stage of light and dark, this rare bird sings beautifully.

Notes:  cistus labdanum, liqueur of davana, benzoin, leather.

This review was based on a bottle from my personal collection.

Editor’s Note: L’Oiseau de Nuit is one of  my  top ten favorite perfumes and I treasure my bottle. It has special meaning for me as it not only was a gift from Pierre Guillaume, but I wore it when we had dinner together during his first trip to the US in July of 2010. Because it is not part of the permanent collection, there is no number. I await the sweet song of a night bird trilling that it is no longer caged and is here to stay -Michelyn

  • This one sounds truly amazing! I’m drawn to scents with amber and caramel in them, so I would be drawn to L’Oiseau de unit. It seems like so many good scents with these notes have been discontinued…so it would be wonderful to get to try this one! With the recommendations of the editors here I’m sure it should be put into the permanent collection!

Oh the nightbird…..every night we sit outside and watch the sun sink into the west. Then we cling to those few remaining minutes of warmth before the coolness drives us in. Then when you move in, it is the warmth of the person you sit next to. A fragrance that captures this would be so exciting to try.

I hope that it will become a part of the permanent collection so that I would have the opportunity to try it.

    I am in the US.

Felanilla and indochine are my favorite PG perfumes ever, followed quite closely by L’ombre Fauve. I just adore Pierre Guillaume’s craftsmanship. To me, he is one of the best noses out there who happens to receive less attention than he deserves, for sure. L’Oiseau de nuit sounds perfect. I adore amber and leather. This sounds like a dream!

  • I am a male who loves Drama Nuui in the summer. I live in the US.
I want to try this one because it sounds soft and sweet with that touch of caramel.
    Thanks.

  • This sounds absolutely fantastic – it has many of my favorite notes, and it sounds particularly great as the cool weather draws nearer. The combination of leather and amber + benzoin sounds dreamy. I’ve not tried a lot from this line, but Cuir Venenum and Indochine are both fantastic!

  • Caramel and leather sounds like …….I can’t even begin to describe how luscious that sounds! This would be a stellar addition to the permanent PG collection! I love Indochine and still hold out hope that Drama Nuui will love me again……sigh……

  • A bitter amber with leather sounds divine. I still haven’t found the leather I want in my collection but mixed with caramel and slightly bitter? Count me in! I live in the U.S. and hope this becomes part of the regular collection as I haven’t tried any of them and really want to.

Definitely my favorite has to be Coze. I dont have a signature scent because I like to try many but if I have to chose I’d say Coze.
I really enjoy leather notes in perfumery so this one is a must try for me.
Thanks. I live in the US.

Sounds intoxicating. Love the description. Sounds like a great fragrance for a crisp fall evening. I am in the US.

  • I have never tried any Parfumerie Generale Fragrance, but I am drawn to this fragrance because of the leather note and I love leather fragrances, and would love to have a sample of it.

My favorite PG fragrance is Praline du Santal. Excellent, a beautiful and warm composition. I would love to try l’oiseau de nuit, as I love the evocative artistry of this line. I am in the USA

  • Elizabeth T. says:

This sounds superb, so I’m disappointed I haven’t tried it before as Pierre Guillaume is my all-time favorite perfumer! I love Cadjmere in winter, but Bois de Copaiba is gorgeous as well. And Jardin de Kerylos is perfect in summer. I don’t know that I can pick a favorite… while not all his compositions work for me, I love the variety and respect them all.

I live in the US… thanks for the draw!

  • I am an aspiring perfumer and this scent sounds incredible I would love to experience it’s scent. Labdanum is one of my favorite scents, and the contrast between light and dark is inspiring, a reflection of us as individuals and the collective. Yes, please, make this part of the private collection!

  • Thank you for an evocative review on one of my favorite perfumes. It is also in my top ten, and in the cooler months it would be a top five. Even the name is beautiful no need to enter me in the draw as I own a bottle, but I had no idea this beauty was a limited edition. I add my voice to the request to bring it here permanently and don’t change the formula!

  • I have yet to try anything from this house, unfortunately, but am incredibly drawn to Amber and leather, and usually most things with a “night” connotation. This sounds amazing! Thanks for the entry. I live in the US.

  • This sounds beautiful! I love amber and am a sucker for exclusivity as well. I’ve actually never smelled a single Parfumerie Generale fragrance, and will have to fix that in the near future. I’m in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • I love gourmands and I love ambers, so this sounds fabulous. My favorite PG fragrance is DjHenne, but I have tested a very limited range of them.

  • I have not tried any fragrances from this line. I would love to try this fragrance. I experienced the flock of blackbirds converging over me on a walk last week at lunchtime…it was like a scene out of “The Birds”…I thought that they would descend on me, but they just cackled in the trees overhead for a few minutes…overpowering lawn mowers and all other sounds…then they all took off. It was scary and really cool.

  • This sounds like a perfect perfume for me… the citrus start and caramel benzoin drydown sound just like my thing… with leather to boot. Perfect. Thanks for the draw and for showing us something that’s not widely known about! I’m in the US.

  • I have been trying to find am amber based fragrance that doesn’t become overwhelming and this sounds lovely.

  • You had me at “a boozy kiss on a mid-century sectional leather sofa as the clink of cocktail glasses peal in the background”. I love a good boozy leather note. Sounds wonderful. I live in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • My favorite is Felanilla. The metallic note with vanilla adds the unexpected. Bois Blonde is also a great wood/grain scent. I am in the US>

My favorite is L’ombre Fauve, Pierre has at least 2 or may be 3 perfume brands now. I wonder when he may come with 4th one. Pretty creative perfumer. I am in the US

  • this one sounds fantastic, so, please, please, bring it into the permanent collection
    I love very much Felanilla
    I have an US address
    thanks for the draw

  • I live in the USA 🙂
And I am drawn to L’Oiseau de Nuit because of the leather & benzoin combination.

  • My favorite scents from the house of Parfumerie Generale include Coze, Cadjmere, Indochine, and Bois Naufrage.
I was not aware of L’Oiseau de Nuit, and when I read benzoin, leather, and labdanum, my ears and nose perked up! I’d love to try this one. Especially would like to see how davana is incorporated.
What a great house PG is.

And yes, please, I do vote for PG to include L’Oiseau de Nuit in the regular distribution. I live in the US, and thanks, as always for the chance to try these new scents!

I *love* Bois Blond and am glad for my FB! So unique, my favorite hay which has spoiled me for all other hays. Remember it was more limited too and I was worried about missing my chance! Luckily it’s still available, though listed as ‘limited’.

Also love L’Ombre Fauve, Un Crime Exotique, Iris Oriental, Aomassai…and there are many like Indochine which sound right up my alley which I have not yet tried.

Please include L’Oiseau de Nuit in the regular, unlimited collection! It sounds so incredibly lovely and bewitching. The appeal in flying from day to night eith boozy kisses and nighttime pleasure is apparent to all. Thanks for the evocative review and draw!

  • Lovely sounding scent…I love benzoin and labdanum! Thank you for the draw. I am in the US.
