New (YouTube) Perfume Review: Olfactive Studio Close Up (Celine Verleure/Annick Menardo) + Zoom In Zoom Out Draw

celine verleure olfactive studio le blog du parfum qui n'existe pas encore

Celine Verleure used social media for LE BLOG DU PARFUM QUI N’EXISTE PAS in 2009

When Olfactive Studio debuted in 2011 she had already used social media in 2009 ahead of most in the fragrance industry. Creative Director Celine Verleure had a definitive vision, She wrote in our Creative Director in Perfumery Series,  “I had the idea for Olfactive Studio while thinking about perfumers briefs. I read many briefs in my career and they were all based on words descriptions of the target audience or long drawn out storytelling. It was then that I realized that images could be more powerful in expressing emotions than words. That old adage “a picture is worth a thousand words” is true in my case and is the foundation that Olfactive Studio was built upon. But not just any picture; I love photography and like visiting photo galleries and exhibitions in Paris. I bought some artistic photographs for my house. For me fragrance is really THE art of the XXIst century. I wanted my brand to be modern and unconventional rather than anchored in the past like many brands”.

The 10th release Close Up, now housed in its new flacon features the photography of Armenian born SUREN MANVELYAN, and the visual is the ocular mystery of a blue brown iris.

Celine Verleure and Annick Menardo

The perfumer  is Annick Menardo, who has created some  of the most masterful fragrances in contemporary perfumery including Lolita Lempicka, Le Labo Patchouli 24, Bvlgari Black and the stunning Guerlain Bois d’Armenie to name a few.

I immediately thought of sending my avant premier sample of Close Up to Contributor Sebastian Jara of the YouTube Channel Looking Feeling Smelling Great to review since he is a fan of the brand  (Chambre Noir, Panorama,  Ombre Indigo are among his favorites) and coincidently he is of Armenian descent.  The fragrance is as compelling as the image; a perfume of opposites, the ingredients are unusual and green coffee, griotte cherry blend seamlessly into musk, amber, wood and tobacco. It is Sebastian’s favorite from Olfactive Studio to date. – Michelyn Camen, Editor in Chief

  • The new bottle looks great! And, as Sebastian says, the notes are also very promising, especially the combination of green coffee and rose which I love. And sour cherry – yummy and sensual! I can’t wait to try Close Up. Thank you for the review, Sebastian! I live in the EU.

  • What I like most is that Olfactive Studio is a house inspired by photography. Do you believe I didn’t know that? I haven’t even guessed by the names of the fragrances, so it’a nice surprise. The notes also sound great and I’m excited about the “fuzzy vibe” that Sebastian is talking about. A must-try for me.

My favorite fragrance by Olfactive Studio is Panorama.

I live in Europe and thanks for the draw.

  • Oscar Sanchez says:

I just enjoyed Sebastian’s review for Close Up. I love the Olfactive Studio brand, I have and love the Still Life in Rio and am waiting for the opportunity to get some Chambre Noire and Still Life, and now this new scent sounds amazing as well. I’d love to add this to my collection. I’ll be keeping my eye out for some chance to get a hold of some, even if only a decant.

  • Spicy coffee with tobacco and patchouli notes must smell delicious and sounds like a perfect perfume for colder days and there is a big chance I’m going to love it.

Thanks for the review. I live in the EU.

  • I’ve never tried a OS fragrance but they have a very good reputation. Sebastian is fabulous as always. I live in Chicago.

  • I always follow sebastian’s reviews regarding perfumes since he’s generous on giving giveaways its just that is not worldwide. I take this opportunity to enter the contest then hopefully i win. I dont have access to test any perfumes from Olfactive Studio brand, so im taking this chance to participate because the notes are very up to my alley like green coffee, griotte cherry and ofcourse tobacco which is something new to my nose. I have enjoyed annick menardo’s hypnotic poison eau sensuelle before so im excited about this one. Count me in. Im from the philipppines

  • OMG, this fragrance sounds amazing. It has cherry coffee and tobacco. Some of my favorite notes, not to compare, but from those notes alone, I automatically compare it to Pure Havane by Muglar. But, this is most likely much more rich and has more body then the Muglar fragrance and I so so so want to get my hands on this. I really want to win this. I just love Sebashtian, his reviews are always impeccable and he’s description of this scent really intrigued me! GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!!!

  • I have little experience with Olfactive Studio, but I’ve tried Ombre Indigo and I like it very much. Close Up sounds different, but also interesting, especially the base. I’d love to test it. I live in Europe, thanks!

  • Thanks cafleurebon n Sebastian for the giveaway n the review.
I do like Chambre Noir n still life from this brand. According to Sebastian’s review, this one sounds interesting n perfect these days till winter. The notes are among my favorites.
    Hopefully to win 🙂

    Thanks again guys.

  • Very good review. I have never tried any fragrance from Olfactive Studio, but this one sounds incredibly good. I would very like to try it. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • I visited Olfactive Studio’s site and was wowed by the photography. There were some amazing shots. I also love the iris photo for Close Up. Sebastian elicited such a wonderful feeling when he talked about the musk base as being like a kitten on your lap. It sounds from his review that this is a very well balanced perfume. I would love to have this perfume. I live in the USA.

  • SamuelAlmeida says:

Thanks cafleurebon and Sebastian for the giveaway and the review, this sounds a really great release 🙂 would love to enter the giveaway.

  • Sebastian’s reviews are always great and I love that he’s always so positive. I know he’s a fan of chambre noir and the fact that this is another favorite makes me very curious (and hopeful to score a full bottle :-). Great insight as always!

  • Olfactive Studio is one of my favorite houses. I started with Chambre Noir, then Flash Back and Autoportrait in FB sizes. Then came Still Life in Rio, which I was prepared to forget, thinking it was a flash in the pan. But no, it now is a full bottle in my cabinet, too. The others are on my want list. I would love to try the new one!

  • I love the way Sebastian talks about perfumes – he is honest and describes the notes and the scent itself rather than making a celebrity of himself.

Close Up sounds smoky and heavy, perhaps too heavy for summer, but the release is going to be at the end of October, so the timing is perfect and I’m sure it’s going to be a nice autumn fragrance for many of us. I so look forward to test it! I live in Europe.

  • I get excited about anything Annick Menardo does! I can’t wait to try this one. And being that it’s from the house of Olfactive Studio makes it all the better. Sabastain does a great job with his reviews, and I trust his nose! I’m in Arizona where it was still 108 today, but this scent sounds great for the upcoming fall.

  • I like how Sebastian makes this sound like a warm and cozy fragrance – I love tobacco scents for this very reason – and I can’t wait to smell this interpretation of cherry. Amazing art too, I haven’t smelled any Olfactive Studio YET, but their concepts and art are sensational. I live in Canada, thanks!!

  • Hello, I enjoyed Sebastian’s review because he describes how the notes change time. Also, the only Olfactive Studio I’ve tried is Still Life and I like it quite a bit. I’m in the U.S. also. Thanks!!!

  • I always enjoy Sebastian’s reviews and his passion for fragrances. His note breakdown of Close Up has me intrigued. I’m a big fan of Olfactive Studio and currently own Still Life and Lumiere Blanche. Still Life is definitely my favorite and was in heavy rotation this summer for me. I hail from Chicago-USA. Thanks!

  • Really enjoy Sebastian videos. And like how I takes through the fragrances development
I love the photo it’s really amazing and I don’t think I have smelled green coffee before
Annick Menardo is one of my favorite perfumers Lancome Hypnose and Lolita lempicka are two staples
My favorite Olfactive is Lumiere Blanche with Selfie a close second
    I live in Canada

  • I want a perfume that feels like a fuzzy kitten sitting on my lap! These notes sound wonderful, especially for upcoming cold weather! I have not tried anythingfrom this brand, but it’s an interestingconcept. USA. Thank you.

  • I like that Sebastian always breaks it down in a way you can get a real feel for the fragrance. Never tried anything from the house, so no favorite yet. Live in Albuquerque, NM………USA

  • I liked the way Sebastian described this new unique fragrance. I am new to the house of Olfactive studios and I live in Illinois.

  • Thanks for the great review, Sebastian! I’m intrigued by the cherry note and love scents that verge on the gourmand without tipping over into the completely edible so this one sounds great. I also like the sound of the ‘fuzzy’ musk, and of course it’s Annick Menardo, so what’s not to like? I’ve yet to have the chance to try any Olfactive Studio scents but Lumiere Blanche is on my list – and now I’ll have to add Close Up too. I’m in the US. Thanks!

  • Sebastian’s review is as usual a lot of fun and highly detailed. I enjoyed it as I’m enjoying my samples of Panorama and Blue Indigo. I live in the EU (Spain)

  • I loved how Sebastian is able to convey the details of the scent. It makes everyone want to try it for themselves. OS has a really interesting concept by naming fragrances after photography terms. As a photographer myself, it really makes it all the more interesting. Although I’ve never tried an OS scent as i dont have access to it in my country, Singapore, i would love to have an opportunity to try one!

  • Great review by Sebastian, he describes the house and the scent superbly.
Big fan of olfactive studio. Own three bottles and my favourite is chambre noir, can’t get enough of it.
From Canada and would love to get my nose on this.

  • I have always enjoy Sebastian’s review and a big fan of his channel. Getting to know that Olfactive Studio has launched the new scent, Close Up, just makes me smile. Back from where I stay, I do not have a chance to try any of the scent and I blind bought chamber Noire and Still life which I love and adore.
After seeing Sebastian’s review, all the notes mentioned are some of my Favourites and I can’t wait to try. Hopefully I get a chance to win the bottle. I am located in HongKong.

  • I thoroughly enjoyed Sebastian’s review of Close Up and I love the new bottles! Olfactive Studio is one of my favorite fragrance houses. I was excited to learn that Annick Menardo was the nose behind Le Labo Patchouli 24, Guerlain, Bois D’Armenie, and other OS scents. My favorite OS scents that I own are: Still Life, Lumiere Blanche, Chambre Noir, SLIR, and Autoportrait. I’m excited to try Close Up. I live in the US and thanks for the generous draw! 🙂

  • As a long term subscriber of sebastian , any frag that peaks his interest always intrigues me and i end up owning one in my collection. the notes of close up sound right up my alley . Thanks for the giveaway and good luck .

  • OS is awesome and Annick is brilliant. My favorite part was when Sebastian described the base notes. that cozy snuggle with the raw animal tug of war.

  • Sebastian does a good job of introducing the brand to those who have not heard of it as to how fragrances are inspired by photographs. The creator of the Close Up Annick Mendardo is one major reason why I am intrigued because like Sebastian, I also like many of her creations including Bvlgari Black. Sebastian also implies this is kind of chameleon fragrance with gourmand, musky, and animalic aspects. My favorite from Olfactive Studio is Still Life. I am in the US.

  • I was first introduced to this brand by none other than Sebastian, I love onbre indigo and it s a part of my fall rotation. Thanks in advance!

  • I am really interested în olfactive studio after smelling chambre noire. As the name say Close Up, I think this will be great! I live in Europe.

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

As always Sebastian review & video……..in one word……AWESOME. His review closeup me to Close Up the new fragrance from Olfactive Studio. I really enjoying wearing Annick Menardo creations like Dior Hypnotic Poison, Boucheron Jaipur Homme, DSQUARED² Potion, Givenchy Xeryus Rouge, Azzaro Visit, Hugo Boss Boss Bottled and YSL Body Kouros.
I haven’t tried yet any of the Olfactive Studio fragrances. Chambre Noire, Ombre Indigo and Close Up are on my want list.
Thanks to Olfactive Studio for generous giveaway. Count me in please.
    Peshawar, Pakistan

  • I loved the video and the way Sebastian talked about the house and the parfumers. I just sampled Ombre indigo and Still life and I was quite impressed with them. I have been chasing these ones for a long time but they do not sell in Slovakia. I would love to have a fragrance from the house, names, bottles and juices are all very suggestive and high end, thanks

  • Thanks for Sebastian, Cafleurebon and Olfactive Studio for the worldwide giveaway.
Im familiar with Chambre noir for OS which is great. I love gourmand and musky fragrances, but if it too rosy it would be an awesome gift for my Mom who is a talented photographer. 🙂
    EU, Hungary

  • Another nice review from Sebastian, especially his description of Close Up as being like having a cat on your lap. Warm fuzzies!

I am a huge fan of this house, too. I already have Still Life and Still Life in Rio. That second bottle was the generous reward for supporting the crowdfunding for the new flacon! It looks great, and I’d love to see it in person.

Still Life in Rio is my favorite. I’ve been wearing it nonstop all summer.

    I am in the US.

  • I love Sebastian’s detailed analysis on the note breakdown. The green coffee and cherry combination has me thoroughly intrigued with this fragrance. I live in London, UK and my current favourite from the Olfactive Studios’ (OS) catalogue is “Still Life”. The next addition to my collection will most likely be “Chambre Noire”. Sheer OS fragrance lust compelled me to enter the competition for a bottle of their new beauty. There’s growing general consensus that OS produce some of the best scents out there and I’ve become a solid fan myself over the recent months.

  • Great review, Sebastian. Close Up looks and sounds beautiful! I’m intrigued by “unique combinations of the notes”
I haven’t had the chance to try OS scents. Thank you for the review and draw!

    (EU)

  • I really enjoy Sebastian’s channel, always highly informative and interesting, and in this particular case, I’m intrigued by his description of the green coffee, amber and musk notes.

My favourite from Olfactive Studio is Chambre Noir, I like that leather scent a lot, and I’m looking forward to try this new release.

I live in Spain. Thank you for the giveaway!

  • Names of Olfactive Studio fragrances are connected with photography… as Close Up, Selfie, Still life, Panorama, Autoportrait … This is great idea. Sebastian is not only a photographer from his childhood but he has few favorite scents from this brand. He stressed that musk in the base is combine with other notes in very unique way and that Close up will be his fav scent.
I am in EU. Never tried anything from this brand but I would like. Following all on instagram.

  • I am a huge fan of the brand. I have reviewed the fragrances to my Brazilian followers firsthand and I love Chambre Noire and Autoportrait. But Ombre Indigo is amazing and innovative!

Céline became a friend and I was so happy by the time I discovered she lived here, in Brazil, for 2 years and speaks a little bit of Portuguese as well.

Now, you come up with this giveaway. Of course I am going to try!

  • YES I am a fan of olfactive and I really like the Autoportrait. Would love to have this coffee, cherry and tobacco creation. I can be super patient waiting for this. US

  • I have very little experience with this house. Sebastian once again does an amazing review and sparks my interest. The note breakdown sounds amazing. Especially with tobacco and cherry. I live in the U.S.. Thank you so much.

  • Love the description of a cat sitting on your lap and purring. The notes of Close Up sound delicious. Haven’t tried anything from Olfactive Studio yet. I live in the Netherlands. Thanks for the draw!

  • I like the house and have tried most off them. My favourite form the house is Chaambre noir, lumiere blanch and still life. Excellent reviewer. Interesting Notes in the close up By O S. Particularly Top Notes.

  • I love so much the smell of coffee and cherry so this one sounds amazing. I’m a fan of Olfactive Studio, my favorite is Ombre Indigo.
Great work, Sebastian. Thank you for the draw! I live in Europe.

  • They’ll always be a parking spot in the wine cooler for olfactive studios many great creations ,ive got a few already chillin,so definitely a fan and Annick Menardo on this new release is the cherry on top.what i Like about sebastions video he gives a good breakdown of the fragrance definitely peaks my interest on this one :)And im in Canada!

  • The tobacco/cherry / green coffee combo sounds great. There are many perfumes from this house that I like but my absolute favorite is Lumiere Blanche.
Thanks! I live in the U.S.

  • Sebastian has a way of making me so curious to try a fragrance–here it was his description of the sour cherry and the fuzzy musk.
i love Still Life in Rio from Olfactive Studios.
    I’m in the USA.

  • Rodney Wallace says:

Sebastian’s love for this house really comes through in his review. I love the notes of Close Up. Olfactive Studios is one of my favorite houses. Close Up sounds like a stunner and I would love to be the lucky one to win. I’m in the US. Thank you so much for this opportunity.

  • The way Seabstian described it … i’m hooked-sounds like a huge winner in my book.Sour cherry , tonka, amber .. gourmandise
If i can make a short list of the things i like most about Sebastian :
    1.Honesty
2.Not afraid to bash sertain frangrance if he hates it
    3.Colaboration videos
I’m was following his old chanel “Man loves cologne” too.
I expect Close Up to be very good, and i hope it will be as good as Chambre Noire.
    Virginia USA

  • Love the new bottle design. I do say there are very interesting notes in this fragrance. I am having a hard time wrapping my head around as to what this smells like. Sebastian had me cracking up about the purring cat in you lap. At any rate, I would love to have a fragrance with cherry in it. One of my favorite note but very infrequently used in fragrances. In the USA. Awesome drawl and love that iris.

  • Patrick Echevarria says:

I enjoy Still Life in Rio from the house but haven’t had the chance to test the rest offering from the house because of unavailability in my area here in San Diego. This Close Up was well described by Sebastian in his review and is quite interesting to me because it contains notes that I am a big fan off and at the same time, notes that I really don’t dig. I hope to be able to try this new one and see how it goes.

  • concertslover says:

Sebastian, once again, performs a perfect video review. I have heard of Olfactive studio but never realized that it was themed all towards photography based names when I reviewed their portfolio after the video it struck me then. I really like the thought of such a well balanced patchouli/musk/amber blend and a subdued animalistic shimmer to the resulting fragrance. Close up sounds amazing, and my wife will love it on me due to the coffee 🙂
    Thanks for the draw.
    In USA

  • Wow! waht a wonderful Review – Sebastian calls it a unique comibantion and perfect – that really sounds good to me. The muskiness he observes sounds very interesting to me – too animalic I don’t like but a litte bit is perfect. For me the top notes with green coffee and Sour Cherry Sound compelling. I love coffee notes in perfumes.

From OS I know Still Live.

I would be very happy to try this one.

thank for the draw, I live in the EU!

  • I liked the first four Olfactive Studio scents, especially Chambre Noir. I would love to try this fragrance. It’s a wonderful review, and the notes sound interesting. Please enter me in draw. I live in the USA. Thanks.

  • A combination of Green coffee and rose ??? Shut up and take my money!!! 🙂

Great Review Sebastian! Greetings from Europe

    USA

  • The new bottle looks great and the scent sounds very interesting. Unfortunately, I have had an opportunity to try only a few fragrances from Olfactive studio. My favourite one is Still life. I am from Croatia. Thank you for a worldwide draw!

  • Great video from Sebastian as always. The new design is a great refreshment to the classic and minimalistic bottles. Still can’t decide which I prefer more. Olfactive studio’s best fragrance ( in my humble opinion 🙂 ) is the boozy devil Chmbre Noire with Still life in Rio closely following on second place. I appreciate the giveaway even more since us non-US fragrance enthusiasts need some love too 😉

Greetings from a small European country!

  • as always, sebastian does a great job with his reviews. I’m interested n this one since I think it will be a come-hither type a fragrance (hence the name, as well). I’ve only tried chambre noire and ombre indigo from them, but I decided I don’t like plum in fragrances, hehe. I live in Romania. 🙂

  • If Sebastian says its worth check out then its worth it. I’m very interested in how the cherry note would play out my skin. And that bottle is dope. California

  • cinnamon tree says:

Sebastian’s review is detailed and interesting as always. I love Chambre Noir and I hope I’m going to like Close Up as well. Thanks for the draw, I live in the EU.

  • Salim Khattak says:

Wonderful video from Sebastian Jara as always. Never tested any fragrance from Olfactive Studio. Still can’t decide which I prefer more but Chambre Noire and Ombre Indigo are on my wish list.
Thanks to Olfactive Studio for marvelous giveaway of full bottle.
    I am from Pakistan

  • I liked the details regarding the fragrance, owners, perfumer; it was a very informative review. Never tested anything from this brand and would like to try this one. I’m in Europe.

  • Sebastian always does just down to earth reviews that make me want to run out and buy the perfume he’s reviewing!

The notes sound beautiful and I love how he describes the drydown note of musk as giving the fragrance a warm and fuzzy feeling, as if a cat is sitting on your lap purring!

I’ve never tried anything from Olfactive Studio, so I would be thrilled to win this new release!

    I live in the U.S.

  • Great review about fragrances from Sebastian as always!! I’ve never tried and never heard anything about Olfative studio before..Close up bottle look very minimalist but it look gorgeus!!

    Greetings from Malaysia..

  • What a great review. I like tobacco and amber in perfumes, so I must try Close Up. My favorite scent by Olfactive Studio is Still Life in Rio. Thanks for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • I think I haven’t tried anything from Olfactive Studio and I regret it, because all of their fragrances sound very promising and the new bottle is just awesome. I like what Sebastian said about Close Up, that it’s a warm and fuzzy perfume and I’d like to try it myself. I think I will like the tobacco and cherry combination.

Thank you for this nice giveaway. I live in Norway.

  • Spicy oriental Close Up plus a totally handsome Sebastian make a truly great impression. I expect nothing but the best from Olfactive Studio, especially since I first tried Panorama which I love. I live in the EU, thanks for the draw!

  • This one sound so good – almost gourmandise fragrance with sour cherry , cofee , cedar , amber and patchouli -WOW
Own and love Chambre Noire – the best one from the brand BY FAR.
Sebastian is honest reviewer -that’s thing i like most about him and his reviews.

  • I always love Sebastian’s reviews, because we seem to have similar tastes. I’m so happy to see a give-away outside the US! Close Up sounds lovely. With the amber, tobacco, and coffee it hits me in all the right places. I can’t say I have a favourite Olfactive Studio scent, but I’m excited to see the new falcon! I remember when it was being crowdfunded. I’m also a fan of Annick Menardo’s work, so I’d love to try this. I live in Canada, thank you.

  • Coffee, rose, sour cherry and tobacco. That must smell awesome!! Sebastian saying it has a fuzzy vibe makes the description totally triggers my curiosity!
I bought Chambre Noir for my father earlier this year and i keep steeling some spritzes everytime i visit my parents. If i will be the lucky winner of this bottle, i will share it with my father too for sure!

    Thank you for the opportunity!

    I live in the Netherlands

  • Sebastians reviews are always great. His passion and love of fragrances seeps through them. I have made several purchases based off of the information he provides. The mix of these certain notes sounds soooo good, literally and figuratively:)
Ive really liked the couple of fragrances that Ive tried from Olfactive Studio, with Chambre Noire and Ombre Indigo being my current faves.
Sidenote: HAPPY BIRTHDAY SEBASTIAN!!! I hope some of all the positivity and generosity that you’ve shown tons of people over the years comes back to you today in spades:)
    Im in the USA

  • Sounds like a great, warm and aromatic mood enhancer and a must-have for this autumn. Cherry, coffee and tobacco mention makes me even plan a blind buy, which I normally avoid, but not with these notes!

    (EU)

  • I like the new bottle look so I’m even more curious and excited about what’s inside. The combination of tobacco, coffee, amber and leather notes sounds a little heavy and thick, but if Sebastian recommends the scent, it must be worth trying. Please count me in.

My favorite fragrance by OS is Ombre Indigo. I live in Europe. Thanks for the draw!

  • Before I only knew about the Fragrances sold at local department stores. No that I found all the fragrances reviews they opened a whole new world of fragrances that I want to explore and enjoy.Olfactive Studio seems to be on that I always hear about and they have some good fragrances that would fit my personality and life style. I can’t wait to start adding these wonder scents to my everyday life.

  • I’ve never tried a OS fragrance but they have a very good reputation.Nice review Sebastian as always. I live in Israel.
