Whenever Swiss perfumer Vero Kern of vero.profumo releases a new perfume, it causes a ripple of anticipation and pleasure throughout the perfume community. Her line is so carefully curated that you know that when she lets a new fragrance out into the world, it’s going to be worth the wait. She started with three fragrance, .onda., .rubj., and .kiki., in 2007, then added a fourth, .mito., in 2012, the EDP versions of Rubj, Kiki and Onda in 2010 and added the Voiles d'Extraits in 2013. This year, she has created a rose-centric fragrance, which she has wanted to do for some time. The new perfume is .rozy., and is a tribute to the late Anna Magnani, who won a Best Actress Oscar for her performance in the 1955 film adaptation of Tennessee Williams’s “The Rose Tattoo”. When I was in Milan, I stopped by the Campomarzio70 offices, which is the Italian distributor for vero.profumo, and had a chance to experience this new release in both Eau de Parfum and Voile D’Extrait.

.rozy. EDP was the first version that I smelled, and it made me instantly happy. There is something about the opening, full of bright roses and fruits, that makes me think of the sincere laughter of children, when it is throaty and full, from the belly.  Ms. Kern uses passionfruit in all of her Eaus de Parfum to convey a slightly animalic feel, and although it is fruity in combination with the juicy peach note here, it does have that slight underbelly smell that tropical fruits can have. Perhaps those children were laughing at a cruel joke. Front and center is the rose, rich and velvety, bolstered by a golden drop of honey. The peach starts to smell more like its skin, fuzzy and sun-warmed, and the rose, too, starts to gather itself for the last puff of fragrance before its petals shatter. It takes a long time for this perfume to fully manifest. The day I wore it, hours later it was still a lightly shimmering honeyed rose.

Notes: Rose d’Orient, Lilac, Peaches, Passionfruit, Honey, and Sandal

The Voile D’Extrait didn’t make me happy in the conventional sense when I first smelled it on paper. It made me roll my eyes back into my head. On skin, the opening is almost brutal, with the headstrong rose, the slightly medicinal tuberose, and unexpected cassis. I can see the Anna Magnani in this – sensationally gorgeous, with an aura of anger and pain to add sharpness to the face. Don’t get me wrong, I reveled in this fragrance, couldn’t stop smelling it, like I was searching for something lost to me. Ms. Kern has done something truly different with rose; she has refrained from using the time-tested oud or patchouli as its companion, instead opting for honey and labdanum. I wore this to an event, and had people smell me. It had dried down by then, and the reaction was mostly one of a lovely comfort scent, which it does become once the rose is stripped of its thorns.

Notes (also applies to Extrait): Rose d’Orient, Tuberose, Cassis, Honey, Spices, Sandal and Labdanum

Both of these versions of .rozy. are exquisite, each with a distinct personality and way of playing out on skin. They are definitely sisters from the same mother, but one is the golden child and the other is the wild child. I would be hard-pressed to choose which one to own, because some days I want to be easy to get along with, and other days (or nights) I want to growl before I settle down. Ms. Kern has done it again.

I received my samples from Campomarzio70.

  • If only I could claim to have seen a movie featuring Anna Magnani or t o have smelled a perfume by Vero Kern, but no, I can’t claim to have done either. However, I would love a chance to sniff .rozy. I live in the U.S. Thanks for the draw.

  • What appeals to me about Rozy? Vero’s genius, and the curiosity of how she applied it to a rose-themed fragrance.
My favorite Anna Magnani film? Roberto Rossellini’s Open City – her death scene is unforgettable.

  • My favorite perfume by Vero Kern is mito Voile d’Extrait. It is one of my top 5 perfumes. I would love to try rozy EDP and VdE both to see the differences. I am in the U.S. Thank you for the draw!

Well, I’ve never seen an Anna Magnani film and I’ve not had the fortune to smell anything by Vero Kern. My goodness how I want to, especially .rozy voile d’extrait. Goodness, why do I want to try it? A rose with labdanum and honey? I might die and go to heaven! And then, there’s the fact that I’ve spent a good deal of life working as a tattooist with my name. . .I’ve been oh so wanting to try this!

  • Rubj EDP is my favorite Vero Kern perfume, although her Kiki EDP comes in a close second. Thanks as ever for this draw!!

  • Liz Detrich says:

Unfortunately I’ve never seen any films by Anna Magnani (unsophisticated me!). But I love anything with Honey and Labdanum in a perfume – very velvety and smooth.

  • My favorite Vero perfume is the Mito VdE. Even though I am not a huge fan of the Rose note, Tama’s review has me very curious to try it.
I live in the U.S. Thanks much for the draw!

  • I am always looking for a new rose perfume! The combination of rose and cassis sounds interesting, and I’ve heard a lot about Anna Magnani recently though I have not seen any of her films. I am in the US, thanks!

  • Man, it seems I have been missing out. I have not tried this line but have been reading so much about it that I want to sample everything. Well, I do love rose, so maybe now is the time. I have not seen any Anna movies but I think the movie poster is hilarious: she’s exposing herself, and the man is like “noooo.” haha. Im in the US.

Before I read this post, I was not familiar with Anna Magnani and her films, though the song Rose Tattoo by the Dropkick Murphys started playing in my thoughts while reading. I always learn new things from this blog & now I just have to watch this movie. Haven’t tried Vero perfume yet; but was intrigued by the honey & rose notes they both seem to share, but the description of a golden and a wild child has me intrigued about the differences. Thanks for the draw.

  • I’ve not seen the film, I had never heard of the actress….But I adore the work of Vero Kern and this one promises to be as beautiful as the rest of the family! I am greatly relieved that it is not a rose paired with patch and/or oud….I know that is a time honored perfume pairing, but truly, everyone has enough of those. I’m a labdanum fan so I whole heartedly approve. I’m fairly drooling…the edp & the vd’e cannot be available soon enough for me!!!

Tama — Another great review! You’re so lucky to have gotten your nose on these early!!

  • I would like to experience the sensation that made the reviewers eyes roll back in their head.

Forgot to add I’m in the US and I have to agree that the movie poster is pretty hilarious, though given the title of the movie & there is one tattooed on Burt Lancaster’s chest in the first photo, she has to be exposing her “rose tattoo”…I absolutely have to see this film now!

  • thegoddessrena says:

Love Rubj extrait and am interested to try these because Ihave only recently gotten into rose perfumes but I like honey notes in perfume

  • Fazal Cheema says:

I like rose fragrances, especially those that are unconventional rose fragrances and this has some animalic vibe to it…almost all Vero’s creations are awesome but my favorite is Onda. i am in the US

  • julesinrose says:

I don’t want to disqualify myself by having not fulfilled the comment requirements. I was falling all over myself excited when I read this was the draw! I’m in the US, and my comments about Vero Kern’s perfumes & Anna Magnani are above. Cheers! I might actually have seen “The Fugitive Kind,” but it’s been too long ago to remember clearly!

  • I’m in the US and love Rubj- such a beautiful scent. And I love roses, so I have high hopes for this one!

  • I really like the idea of a sharp opening, juxtaposed with the shimmering, honeyed rose. As a rose fan, I’d love to try this. I’ve never seen an Anna Magnani movie! I guess I need to fix that, starting with the Rose Tattoo. I’m in the US.

  • Kim Morgan says:

The noir look and feel of it seems exciting and fun, like feminine tattoo flash. US resident.

  • Oh my gosh, I am so excited for this release! Vero is my favorite perfumer of all! I am so looking forward to her take on rose. My current favorite is .mito Voile de Extrait. Just gorgeous. I’m in the US, thanks for the draw!

  • I have sadly sampled neither vero.profumo nor Ms. Magnani’s works, but .rozy. sounds like a dream (with a dark edge, in the case of the extrait). Roses drenched in honey with a bite of deep green labdanum? Oh, yes, please! I am in the US and thanks for the draw!

  • I cannot wait to try rozy, I love your review above and highly admire vero kern as a visionary who follows her heart and doesn’t compromise her ethics and standards to create her perfumes. , I love my full bottles of kiki extrait and rubj extrait- I feel the embodiment of vero kern herself and all her joyousness, playfulness and artistry every time I wear them. I’m wearing onda today, it is like a spiritual experience. I do not know the Magnani movies but will look into them. The poster above is so risque, esp for the time period. I live in US and would be truly and deeply honored to win this draw. Thanks for the chance!

  • To be honest, I think what appeals most to me about this perfume is that it is a Vero Kern floral. I’ve always wanted to try Vero Kern and I imagine most of her fragrances, and now, especially rozy, are very happy, bright fragrances. I think I would enjoy the EDP a lot. I am in the US.

  • I’ve never seen an Anna Magnani movie, nor smelled anything by vero.profumo…but I do know that the description of a honeyed, sparkling rose sounds irresistible! I don’t always like rose notes, but this one seems like one I just HAVE to try! I am in the US.

  • Nice review, Tama. What excites me is that Vero Kern is a very interesting perfumer who seems to really take her time in creating. I also love to try different versions of the Queen of Flowers. I’m grateful for the draw opportunity! Thanks.

  • Beverly Wright says:

Rory will be wonderful, as are all of Ms. Kern’s perfumes. Love, love, love Anna Magnani!!! She was so beautiful, and such a screen presence. Her best film was/is Stromboli! Thanks.

  • The rose note mixed with “fruitiness” appeals to me here.
I have only seen “The Rose Tattoo”, making that my favorite. 🙂

  • Rose + Peach? Count me in! I have only tried Rubj EDP and like it very much (my husband loves it) but have been longing to try her other perfumes. I am in the US. Thank you.

  • I am unfamiliar with the film, actress, and the perfumer so many thanks for the introduction to them! I would love to get to know Vero Kern through her perfumes and am in the US.

  • Love the side-by-side comparison of the different formulations! Think .rozy in Voile sounds slightly more me, because of the honey and labdanum, but some days one want petals and some, thorns.
So far I’ve only smelled Onda (handmade sample, unknown strength) and I love it!

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

Rose, lilac, peaches, passionfruit, honey – this appeals to me as the perfect fragrance for spring.

  • suzy frankel says:

My favorite is Roma: Open City…she was fabulous!
The camera angles in the death scene…unforgettable.
It would be a pleasure to win this draw as I have yet to try their scents. USA
    graci

  • I love a good rose scent, particularly one that has something new to say about rose. Also, I haven’t tried anything from this perfume house, so I’d really love to! I’m in the US; thank you for the draw!

  • Anna’s best: Stromboli. I’m still questing for my perfect rose; I’ve never sampled anything from this line, but am DYING to! I live in the U.S. and thank you so much!

  • I love Rubj! These both sound good by I think the rozy EDP might appeal to me more. I like happy perfumes! I am in the US.

  • I love the idea of the extrait’s “brutal” opening. The
Rose Tattoo is the only Magnani film I’m familiar with, will have to remedy that. I’m in the U.S.

  • I am in love with Rubj and I have usa adress .To be honest it was long time ago when I saw Annas films ,I think I was with my mother and slept in her arms. Please,I dream to try this perfume!
