New Perfume Review: Penhaligon’s Halfeti + Oud, Leather, Rose Fragrance Draw

Halfeti is the latest release from Penhaligon's Trade Routes collection, and is a celebration of all the exotic goods that were  shipped from Turkey. Composed by Perfumer Christian Provenzano, imagine heaps of flowers, towering displays of spices and incense, supple leather hides and lustrous fabrics, all displayed to entice foreign traders into parting with their gold. The fragrance itself is named after a very rare type of black rose that grows on the banks of the Euphrates River in the small village of Halfeti. So deep red that they appear almost burnt, these roses are the heart around which the fifth Trade Routes perfume is built.

~Top Notes: Grapefruit, Bergamot, Green Notes, Armoise (wormwood, used in absinthe.), Heart Notes: Cardamom, Cumin, Nutmeg, Saffron, Cinnamon, Rose, Violet, Jasmine, Cypress, Muguet, Lavender., Base Notes: Leather, Oud, Amber, Resins, Cedarwood, Patchouli heart, Tonka, Vanilla, Sandalwood, Musk. ~

Halfeti smells exactly as you would imagine it to from the note listing. It is an entirely self explanatory fragrance, but then, with such a vivid back story, it would have to be wouldn't it? It does indeed evoke some lovely imagery of picturesque river banks and crowded bazaars, opening with crisp freshness, immediately tempered with spices. The floral accord is herbal and dry, rose, violet and jasmine being only an accompaniment to the main players. The focus and heft of this perfume comes from a very prominent leather/Oud/wood accord that strides out across the fresh opening and settles in for the long haul. The florals almost disappear beneath it (apart from lavender, which is present throughout) and only appear again in the very last drifts of the perfume's life. As an Eau de Parfum, Halfeti boasts some fairly tenacious longevity, with rather impressive sillage, considering Penhaligon's fragrances are usually rather restrained.

If you read my review of Atelier Cologne Oud Saphiryou will know that I have a bit of a problem with the huge over-use of aoud in recent years. I'm a total Oud-a-phobe and in Halfeti it has been used in a familiar way: next to leather with a sprinkling of spice and some rose for good measure. The element that I enjoy most about the fragrance is the dry, herbal quality throughout, which reminds me of old apothecary chests filled with lavender sachets. There is nothing truly unique about the way in which Halfeti has been composed, yet there is no disputing its quality and rich texture. Penhaligon's scents are always beautifully composed, and Halfeti is no exception, although it is a bit predictable oud/rose/ wood perfume. With that being said,  it is sure to have great appeal to those  who love and never tire of this genre.

I would recommend Halfeti to those of you who like their Ouds dry and spiced. This is not a humid, overly animalic scent, it's more like climbing into an empty rosewood chest that was used to ship resins and spices across the seas to England. Warm, dusty and wrapped in cracked old leather, Helfeti might be named for a rose in full bloom but I found dry, faded petals worn with time.

Disclaimer- sample my own, as are all my opinions.

  • Nice review. Rose is so tender and beautiful, the oud is wonderfully dark and mysterious. I love them both. And these two amazing scents in one perfume must be fabulous. I have never tried any of Penhaligon’s Perfume. I’m a registered reader from Europe. Thanks for the draw!

  • I like many oud scents, and I’m fussy about rose scents. I’d like to win this as I’m a Penhaligon’s fan in general. To me their scents are well-crafted and not too heavy hitting. 🙂 USA

  • I haven’t tried a ton of rose/oud scents – in fact, I’m not really sure I’ve tried any other than San Francisco Rose which didn’t work for me. I do, however, think that it is a scent combo with a lot of potential, and I’d love to give this one a try. Thanks for the draw, I’m in the US!

    I like rose fragrances.

Blenheim Bouquet Classic & Elegant is my favourite.

I’m in Canada, thanks for the chance.

  • I love rose scents but sometimes have problems with oud also. The rose here is intriguing and if the oud adds hints of the exotic (love exotic), Halfeti would be fun to win and wear. I really like Penhaligon’s Bluebell and most recently, Ostara. I live in the USA.

  • fazalcheema says:

i think oud plus rose combo is overdone..in fact, it was already overdone by the time western perfumery caught up..oud-rose combo has been a long=time trend in in the Middle East in attar compositions…but then again creativity is the key..i have tried and own oud rose combos such as rose d’arabie but only few have managed to add something new and make it worth acquisition..one is oud ispahan which i just acquired and other is noir de noir because it does add that dark twist to oud rose combination..most oud rose combinations smell too similar to each other…

I am interested in this just for the sake of curiosity how it may differ from conventional oud rose combo..Penhaligon doesn’t create heady scents so there is good possibility Halfeti may bring something new to the table..my favorite Penhaligon is LP9 for men though Sartorial comes close. thanks a lot for the draw. I am in the US

I’ve only tried a few oud and rose perfumes, but Montale Black Aoud and White Aoud are my two favorites in that genre so far. Halfeti sounds interesting because of the “dry” aspect. I’m in the US, and my favorite Penhaligon’s fragrance is either Castile or Malabah. Thanks!

  • I haven’t tried many oud scents – i tend to go with more floral and citrusy scents. I would love to try this though and expand my horizons! It does sound quite exotic and with the floral to back it up, I would definitely wear this.
My favorite Penhaligon’s fragrance is Empressa!
I’m in the US, thanks for the draw!

  • Being a relatively new person to perfume (onlyl a few years!), I have not yet tired of oud. I also have yet to find the perfect dark rose! I have not tried any other perfumes from Penhaligons. I am in the US, thank you for the draw!

  • On the one hand, I am a little tired by another oud+rose oerfume but when it’s done right, the combo can be fantastic. This one sounds interesting with its dry, herbal quality. Looking forward to trying it. The only Penhaligon’s I’ve tried is Sartorial and I quite like that one.

Thanks for the draw. I’m in Canada.

  • Iphigenia says:

I love roses I think that it is the most beautiful flower with the most divine scent while oud evokes mystery and images from the Orient both together must make a perfect match.
From Penhaligon’s Perfume I have experienced Empressa and I have liked it a lot.
I’m a registered reader in Cafleurebon who lives in EU and I thank you for this generous draw chance 🙂

  • We can always leave it to Penhaligon’s to make a well done fragrance. Until now (granted I haven’t tried them all) I never smelled a Penhaligon’s that I didn’t like. As for roses, I never tire of a good rose scent. Love roses in perfumes and even prefer the by oud, incense and spices darkened rose. As for oud, I’m not too fond of very sweet oud fragrances, other than that I’m perfectly fine with oud. Halfeti sounds very nice, I love spices and dryness in perfumes.

I live in the EU. Thanks for this lovely draw!

  • Marcopietro says:

I always appreciate the high quality of Penhaligon’s fragrances and I fell in love with leather/Oud/wood accord. My relationship with rose note is controversial, I like it worn by other people, but there are very few fragrances built around roses that I wear with pleasure.
Halfeti pyramid seems built to mitigate that bit of acidity that often warn in oud / rose combination, so I think I might like it a lot.
    I’m in EU.
    Thanks!

  • Anna in Edinburgh says:

I’m always happy to encounter a new rose scent, and there is sufficient variety in the kinds of rose and oud offered to keep me happy.

I have and enjoy Hammam Bouquet and I’d like to make a comparison between this and Halfeti.

I’m in the EU, and I have a soft spot for Cornubia in particular from the Penhaligon’s scents that I’ve purchased, because it makes me smile and feel contented when I wear it.

  • Love oud so I think this new Penhaligons would be great especially because I don’t like a heavy rose note. My favorite Penhaligons is Empresssa
U.S. I hope this will be in our country soon

  • My feelings about both rose and oud scents? Love ’em!!! I’ve been happy about Western perfumery finally embracing oud and have always loved rose. They are the perfect combination. Would love to try this scent for obvious reason, lol!! My favorite Penhaglion’s is Vaara. I’m in the US. Thanks for the great draw!

I really love what Penhaligon’s is doing with this Trade Routes collection, it is a solid line up so far. This one sounds that is going to be really good too. And to the notes for this sound amazing. Leather , Oud and Rose sound right up my alley. Fingers crossed for this one. I live in the US. Thanks

  • Laurentiu says:

I have not tried anything from Penhaligon’s and I think Halfeti would be a good start. I love that it has everything from woods, to white florals and even lots of spices and leather. I am sure that this is going to be a hit.
    I am from Eu. Thanks!

  • Hello,

My feeling on oud and rose scents is that I have yet to really experiment with a blending of the two…New to this! I’d love to try. I am in the USA, and my favorite Penhaligon is Elixir.

    Thank you!

  • I’ve always like rose in fragrances. It brings out a nice warm and sweetness on my skin. Oud has it’s hits and misses with me. Penhaligon’s is a great house though, so this fragrance interests me a ton!

My favorite is definitely Douro. It’s an amazing citrus, that is in regular rotation during the spring and summer.

I’m in Canada and thank you so much for the draw!

  • I never avoid any rose oud fragrance from any perfume house. Yes there is a bombardment of such perfumes but every perfumer’s approach is different and unique in its own way. I have not found two rose oud fragrances alike. They may be a bit similar but There is always a little difference. My problem is when one perfume house keeps making rose oud fragrances with one more added note to call it a new fragrance. e.g. Montale. I have numerous samples of rose oud from variety of houses but I only have one full bottle of David yurman limited. my fragrance wardrobe can’t include so many rose oud fragrances. Rose oud combo is a match in heaven but perfumers need to modernize it with a new sense of style. There is uniqueness in perfumers approach but the scent needs to be unique as well. Rose oud is like a new pop song that becomes popular quick and easy and sounds redundant in lyrics or so but not unique.
I would be happy to try it as I do all other fragrances. Haven’t tried anything from penhaligons
    Thanks USA
    I haven’t tried anything

  • JazzBelle says:

I love rose because it’s the ultimate romantic fragrance note. Rose, to me, is the queen of the florals, topped by no other. Oud I love, because it’s so primal, so intense, also so difficult to describe unless one experiences it for themselves.

Rose combined with Oud I have yet to try, but I’m imagining so faraway bazaar – a rose that isn’t too prim and proper, a rose that isn’t afraid to be risque!

I am in the USA, my favorite Penhaligon fragrance is Gardenia, it’s simply divine! I liked the CaFleurBon facebook page.

  • The Trade routes area passion of my imagination and after reading this I am truly in love with this fragrance and that is why I would love to win. In my imagination I have covered the distance to its birthplace. I think Rose and Oud are true representatives of the Trade Routes I would venture to express. I have not had the privilege to try Penhaligon’s line. Thank you for the generous draw and lovely review. I am a registered reader in the US

  • sandipants says:

i love rose-oud combos, but this appeals because of the “dry” aspect. my favorite penhaligon’s fragrance is blenheim bouquet. i live in the states. thanks for this opportunity!

  • A bit of a mixed review here…. but I do love, rose, oud , leather are wonderful together imho, so Halfeti sounds like a perfume I would love to experience. I am a registered reader, in the US. Very generous draw. So many favorite Penhaligons but Amaranthine, Satorial and Iris Prima are all lovely.

  • This one sounds rather interesting… I do have an affinity with the items linked to the trade route… I do love oud… and this dry one sounds intriguing.. I’m not a huge lover of strong rose scents so maybe this faded one will delight my sense of smell. Great photos..

  • I recently received Rose Oud by Kilian and I love it. So I’ve slowly opened up to oud. Roses have always been a favorite of mine, and I’m really interested in what Penhaligon’s can create.

My favorite from them would be Juniper Sling. It’s a very inviting and fun scent that I would recommend highly.

    I’m in Canada

  • Systeme D says:

I do like oud! I enjoy rose fragrances, too, but I do find some rose-centered scents to be a bit overwhelming for daily wear. To me, a big rose fragrance is for a special occasion. My favorite rose fragrance is more incensy than rosy: Tauer Incense Rosé. I’d love to win Halfeti because it’s described as dry, spicy, and herbal — and because it has my beloved cardamom note!

My favorite Penhaligon’s fragrances are Elixir and Malabah — two of the most frequently used bottles in my collection.

    I am in the USA.

  • I’m not crazy about rose scents but the imagery of “climbing into an empty rosewood chest that was used to ship resins and spices across the seas to England” sounds so appealing. I live in the US and my favorite Penhaligon’s Perfume is Bayolea.

  • I do love exploring rose fragrances! I haven’t tried many rose/oud combos so this could be a nice start. My favorite Penhaligon’s is Iris Prima, which I adore. I live in the US. Thank you for the review and the draw!

  • Oud hasn’t quite worn out its welcome for me — I’m still a fan when it’s not overdone. I’m also a rose fan, although I have yet to find my quintessential favorite rose scent. (I like Cabaret by Gres a great deal — a woody rose!). I have an uncertain relationship with Penhaligon’s, but am eager to sample Ostara as well as Halfeti. I live in the US and thanks for the draw!

  • Oud and rose are both notes that have such varying application that it very much depends on the perfume. Your notes on the leather notes make me think I would like this perfume very much. (USA).

  • Thank you for the draw! Notes sound promising.
I am a fan of the combo of rose with oud,
My favorite Penhaligon`s perfume is Iris Prima. Beautiful scent!
    U.S.

  • Greg Mayne says:

I really enjoy florals in general, but have not tried any that are combined with oud. I’m really interested in how it turned out. I’m beginning to like oud more and more, and Penhaligon’s always produces quality. My favorite being Bayolea.

    Canada

  • Halfeti sounds amazing, as I do like oud scents that are dry and spiced. I have yet to find my favorite rose and oud fragrance. Maybe this one will be it. I’d love to win to have the chance to find out! I’m in the US, thanks!
